Editor’s Note WHAT DOES KROWD MEAN TO YOU ?
T
his is a question I get asked a lot when I am being interviewed by someone who wants to know my views and inspiration behind creating KROWD. KROWD to me is not just about Fashion or Beauty, It’s a lifestyle and a space to share the creative ideas you have to offer to the world. Many of you remember how KROWD started in 2013, we had zero experience and had to work our way up in the Ottawa fashion industry. Getting to meet influential people who hold the foundation of fashion in this city helped me re-direct the focus of the magazine. Four years later we have proved to be one of the movers and shakers of fashion and help put Ottawa on the map. We chose the theme “INCEPTION” for this issue to let people know about the rebirth of KROWD in 2017. This is our big year and its not a coincidence that Canada also celebrates its big 150th anniversary this year. (Go Canada!) As you scroll through the pages of this issue whether you are reading it digitally or in print, you will realize the unique, vibrant and bold editorials we have packaged specially for you. We want this issue to inspire and challenge everyone to always think outside of the box and not follow the krowd.
George Promise

et your style evolve; mirroring not only the season, but our space in time. 2016 was a year that brought us an abundance of innovation, elevating our understanding of the world, our footprint within it, and our daily lives. Such innovations include the progressions in both materials and design; influencing the fashion industry in a massive way. With technologies such as smart fabrics and 3D printers on the rise, designers get the chance to expand their palettes through exploring a whole new medium. Iris Van Herpen garnered much deserved attention after merging science and technology with fashion design in her SS10 collection. Her re-imagination of the patterns of water were presented through 3D printed structures made entirely of recycled fibres, resulting in pieces of wearable art. This advancement in the concept of fashion also finds its way into our routines with smart fabrics. Other than just aesthetics; like colour-changing or light reflection, smart fabrics have a multitude of uses, including the enhancement of athletic performance. Providing superior fit and support, smart fabrics host wearable technology while continuing to remain environmentally sustainable. In 2015, Ralph Lauren changed the game of wearable tech with their release of smart shirts. Made of silver fibres, these garments can track the wearer’s biometrics to produce personalized work-outs through an app. Our silhouettes evolve accordingly also; the shapes in this tech couture evolve out- worldly to reintroduce a new futuristic and androgynous standard. With geometric pieces to intensify shoulders, shins and shoes, Junya Watanabe brings his craftsmanship to life in each of his mouldbreaking collections using synthetic and technologically advanced textiles and fabrics. By keeping lines sharp, colours clean, and shapes modern, you too can teleport your style to the 21st century.

STRAIGHT SHOOTER FASHION PHOTOGRAPHERS ARE TASKED TO CREATE ART ON DEMAND. By Anthony Best
t
he three day old coffee stain around her face was probably a good sign that it’s time to get rid of my September issue, but such love and passion goes into making a cover that it felt like burning a bible.
“snapping the outfit” or making the model look good. Their job is to deliver in high gloss a “moment”. A moment that stops you in your tracks, makes you imagine, lust and believe. A moment that inspires you.
The tireless pursuit of perfection is a job that many are frankly not cut out for and when practically the entire world is the critic, it’s not a job that you’d see many people lining up to do. The truth is, there are thousands trying to make it in the high paced world of fashion photography but so often they haven’t a clue the type of commitment it takes to deliver on an ongoing and demanding basis.
The adrenaline rush of a shoot and the quest for the perfect shot makes this job stressful, electrifying and hugely rewarding. They spend thousands on talent and locations to best depict the narrative for each issue and labels dish out millions on brand recognition and identity. Photography is demanding yet glamorous, it’s the holy grail of the industry but make no mistake this path is fiercely competitive.
Photographers are royalty in the fashion business, often their commands reigning supreme, so much so they can make or literally break a model’s career. But the role of a photographer is much more than
To continuously produce astonishing work, an artist must harness inspiration from personal and social experiences and push themselves beyond their own known capabilities. The demand for photos has increased exponentially, mainly because of social media and
technology. It is now one of the most demanded career electives in colleges and there’s no wonder that it’s pushing ideas to extraordinary extremes. The constant inundation by visual stimulants and the cavalier take-over by social media on how we express emotions and opinions has helped to take the art form to insane heights which further captivate us and showcases quite clearly that great talent is everywhere and confirms that conceptual, photographic genius can be considered human magic. The artist’s inspiration and interpretation allows them to tell a clear and authentic story so that the produced works would resonate with the audience on an emotional level. You might not see a fashion magazine as that deep, not something that you’d get so emotional over but great heart and honesty is put in a photograph so that it tells the right story. It can be a story of love, passion, success or desire the purpose of these photographs is to connect you to a lifestyle that may also inspire you. Quite often it requires being bold and unapologetic, pushing the envelope in the name of creative expression and individuality. Rushing like a raging sea, unbridled ideas in the mind of creative photographer have the power to provoke questions and open the mind, all through a captivating photographic composition.
It caused many to misunderstand the role of a professionally trained photographer. The true fact remains; no matter the method creative genius should and is recognized. Inspiration and articulation are necessary, to make it in the world of fashion photography they need to be fully functioning tools in your arsenal. Fashion photography is home to some of pop culture’s most iconic images captured by photographers like Patrick Demarchelier, Steven Meisel, Terry Richardson and Annie Leibovitz who played a vital role in giving birth the term iconic photography and “supermodels”. Fashion photographers are tasked to create art on demand, it’s a prerequisite and to be considered successful there needs to be a conversation between the creator and the viewer played out through the composition its dual purpose to inspire and help us unlock our own dreams and passions. What can be communicated in a single image can entertain, shatter former beliefs and provoke desires and give a voice to a vast and diverse world. The partnership with technology and social media only serves as a greater stage that can propel you from struggling creative to #instafamous.
“NO WONDER CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHERS ARE SOME OF THE MOST EXPRESSIVE AND ARTICULATE PEOPLE YOU’LL MEET - NO THEY’RE NOT DRAMA QUEENS!” Not like there’s that much pressure or anything! Who am I kidding? There’s constant pressure, always forcing the mind to conceive and produce modern masterpieces- these never before seen works of art, bring with it a certain sense of self that can also be mistaken for arrogance. But arrogance itself shows where one’s insecurities may reside, I can’t think of a type that’s more sensitive about their art and whether it’s understood, than photographers. Technology may have brought opportunities to showcase this talent but has also blurred the lines between art and life.
Granted most things on Instagram can be categorized as a #thirsttrap but even then the work that goes on behind many images we find is highly encouraging. Photography celebrates and captures life, it speaks almost directly to our sense of self. It cultivates very real emotions and self reflection. It is said that art imitates life but through the lens of a creative photography. Life is the art and maybe we are the ones imitating it. Inception - 63
