Editor’s letter
T
his season, I’ve been experimenting with style. I’ve noticed myself moving away from the corporateinspired dress, and towards something more artsy. I’ve been collecting more distressed denim, building my Yeezy collection, as well as branching out to leather pieces (this is very new to me). I’m pushing myself out of my style comfort zone by trying bolder street-style pieces, and honestly loving it. In this issue, you’ll notice a few different changes. Not only have we had a bit of a face lift but we’ve pushed ourselves to deliver elevated content, articles and editorials. My editors asked me which editorial I liked best in this issue and to answer that I will say DREAMER POOL. Photographer, Elena Iv-skaya blew my mind the very moment that the editorial was sent to us so ofcourse we had to make it the cover! There is always power in team work so I will like to use this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who participated in the making of this issue. We hope you, our readers have a magical experience as you flip through every page in this issue. GEORGE PROMISE

2017 SAW CHANEL’S EMPEROR KARL LAGERFELD BRINGING ONE OF THE MOST EPIC EMPIRES BACK TO LIVE BY ISABEL ALMEIDA

ower, knowledge, creativity, influence, leadership. These are just some of the elements that make up great empires whose legacy continue to stand the test of time – both in the form of nations or successful businesses. May 2017 saw Chanel’s emperor Karl Lagerfeld bringing one of the most epic empires back to life: ancient Greece meets modern elegance. Many were the references to the collection’s Greek inspiration, tempting most spectators not to scratch beneath the surface. But it wasn’t just the beautifully smooth-flowing dresses, or the delicately pleated palazzo trousers, or the surprisingly harmonious combination of tweed with fringes and Greek ornaments. Nor was it the playful adaptations of the Greek Evil Eye and the Owl of Athena on the collection’s details, or the stylish tie-up belts, or empowering stone jewellery. All of this certainly played a good part in portraying Ancient Greece, but it was the collection’s feel of ephemerality that truly struck the chord. Models walked down the runway adorned by goddess-like pieces, light enough to make you look (and we guess, feel) like you could walk on air and fly with the wind, but powerful enough to leave any mortal on this earth in awe. Karl recreated the essence of Greek gods right in Chanel’s modern day empire. The push-and-pull between heaven and earth was also felt in the wide array of colours enriching the show, ranging from fire reds and oranges, ocean blues, marble off-whites, coral pinks, along with bold bursts of gold and silver. As always, Chanel didn’t disappoint when it came to accessories either. This season saw the revival of gladiator sandals and the continued boom of bucket bags along with oversized clutches. Ready to jet-off into summer yet? In short – a collection fit to accompany those looking to find their very own Olympus.

Minimalistic
Dondup BY KIP GILBERT
A refreshingly minimalistic collection, a splash of Rock’ n’ Roll and a subtle touch of florals set
the stage for the Dondup Spring 2018 collection. Dondup, an Italian fashion house based in Milan led by president Matteo Marzotto could best be described as of producing clean and contemporary designs. Marzotto prides Dondup as well for maintaining a certain level of prestige when it comes to the respective image of the company. This becomes evident when understanding that the house only works with an in house design team, meaning that there are no commonly known designers working in the creative process. Marzotto explained his reasoning when making a statement shortly after the release. “It’s much more modern and in the company’s spirit to have a collective creative process open to collaborations instead of unnecessary big egos.” Within the collection itself, a display of an edgy femininity dominated the show. Kicking off the collection, an elegant embroidered white dress was accompanied by black army boots certainly providing a sharp yet inspiring contrast. Moving forward in the collection, black mini-skirts and ruffled white blouses dominated the show, bringing forward a renaissance of minimalistic modernism. As well, military shirts and white blouses were subtly embroidered with lilac flower designs, providing an edgy reminisce of the days of Rock’ n’ Roll. Continuing on, a heavy influence of belts and embroidered vests were consistent in the collection, continuing to bring forward an edgier vibe while still maintaining feminine. The collection was clean, well cut and of minimalist design; it was safe and expected. Dondup certainly is moving forward in ingenuity but time can only tell if they bring up a more visually creative approach. 67

中 国 城 中 国
A Day In China Town What´s a visit to New York City without strolling through Chinatown? Incomplete.
N
BY THERESA ALLAMAKÉ
ew York’s Chinatown, which is located next to Little Italy on Manhattan Island, is one of the oldest and largest Chinatown outside of Asia. Chinatown is home to the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere and was listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historical Places in 2010. It is a wonderful experience for anyone who enjoys food, culture, shopping and entertainment. There is bound to be something for everyone who comes to enjoy a piece of China found in New York. If you’re in the mood to try a new dish Chinatown is the best place to go. With more than 300 Chinese restaurants to choose from including Joe’s Shanghai (try the pork or crab meat xiaolongbao), Jing Fong (300+ different kinds of dim sum dishes), Nom Wah Tea Parlor (the oldest dim sum parlor in NYC) and Amazing 66 (a must have: pastrami shrimp fried rice) you’ll eat to your heart’s content. The neighborhood also boasts a number of large Chinese supermarkets if you’d rather attempt to prepare and cook some Chinese cuisine at krowdmagazine.com

home. The scene on Columbus Park is usually bustling with amateur troupes of Chinese opera performers, elderly Chinese ladies practicing tai chi and inhabitants playing mahjong. This is a good destination for your post-lunch stroll, people watching or as reprieve from the surrounding concrete jungle. A basketball court, large playground and soccer/volleyball field are found in the park’s 129499 m² sports facilities for anyone that wishes to be active. Granted that you don’t want to shop, eat or sing some karaoke, consider visiting the Mahayana Buddhist Temple. It’s open to the public, free of charge and provides a large meditation area were you can rest under the watchful eye of a 16-foot golden Buddha. Whether you’re in Chinatown for fun and relaxation, or to grab a bite to eat, it is a guarantee that there is always something exciting going on that will most likely grab your attention.

RIVER ISLAND DESIGN FORUM X BLOOD BROTHER
B BY KIP GILBERT
old and bright colours, military design and a monumental collaboration - the River Island Design Forum in collaboration with BLOOD BROTHER collection provided an electric take on the militaristic appropriation into the fashion world. River Island Design Forum, who’s inspiration comes heavily from military uniforms, worked carefully with BLOOD BROTHER this season to produce something even more unique than ever before. BLOOD BROTHER, who prides itself on their ability to combine contemporary fashion design and the fundamentals of comfort worked hard in their efforts to make this collection one to remember. The collection, all eleven pieces, was heavily focused on strong visual aesthetics. Neon orange hats, lanyards and sweaters accompanied by sharp cut denim jeans and jackets made this collection all the more contemporarily profound and modern. The addition of leather hiking boots and a borg fleece jacket also paid homage to military design, the mixture of this with the aesthetic value absolutely prove that this collection was a success. 81

DREAMER Pool
O
BY THERESA ALLAMAKÉ
nce again, it’s the perfect sunny afternoon with nothing to do except lounge by the pool in the backyard. I finally have everything I´ve ever wanted and need new and bigger goals. Maybe a partner who isn’t as intimidated by me as my coworkers at the firm? Or a pet! But I’d have to hire a sitter for when I’m at work or away though. I haven’t done much leisure travelling lately. I should. I couldn’t for the past year because of the increased amount of work I received. I wonder what countries I´ll be able to visit. At least five including a lovely Caribbean island. I continue pondering to myself as I finish applying the final touches of my makeup in front of the gorgeous vanity I bought in celebration of being promoted at the law firm last spring. ‘Time to dazzle the neighbors and think of five dream destinations to travel to!´ I say to my reflection before heading out. Visions of what summer could look like are captured and styled in serene images displaying a modern day retro aesthetic. The photo sets are with bold complementary color palettes that fashion a pop-art vibe. Reds and blues pop while the greens and pastels are beautifully accompanied by the model´s skin tone. The gentle sunlight and composition only add to the overall reminiscence of a different era. The model can be seen embodying poolside feminine glamour with fun, yet sophisticated makeup looks while wearing modest vintage swimwear, matching swim caps and iconic large sunglasses. She displays a variety of pastel colored one-pieces, bright bikinis and even dons the typical flower adorned swim cap. The stylist’s accurate attention to detail showcases the style of the 1940´s and onward that were simpler and exceedingly modest compared to that of recent times. Though unassuming, the silhouettes mirror the classic elegance that has a recurring vogue.

Gucci Cruise 2018 Campaign It’s All About Flower Power In Gucci’s 2018 Cruise Collection, whose campaign is aptly titled “Roman Rhapsody.” BY STUART RICHARDSON
T
his collection arrives after the fiftieth anniversary of the Summer of Love, and captures creative director Alessandro Michele’s effusive & high-powered rich palette and emotive styling. Micheal in his 2018 collection is more contemporary than classical, invoking Antiquity through an appropriation of the era’s most recognizable symbols. Large, gold sock and buskin lapel pins — signify comedy and tragedy in Classical theater — adorning a flashy, purple brocade suit. Gold laurel wreaths and headpieces, embellished with lyres and bows, crown his models’ heads.
Unsurprisingly, the Draped silhouettes, suggesting ancient Rome’s preferred garment, the tunic, populate the collection, though perhaps more sparsely than would be expected. Instead, Michele draws heavily on the style of the late sixties and early seventies, a period which had influenced his two previous SS collections, to round out the 2018 campaign. It’s is a delightful and unusual, but surprisingly harmonious, pairing as the two eras share much in their libertine morals and romantic affinity to nature. Michele’s lush, floral motifs, found somewhere in nearly every ensemble of his collection, are as much Roman as they are retro. His decorate 99
ascot scarves are reminiscent of the focalia worn by Roman soldiers. And his furtrimmed coats recall the luxurious animal pelts the well-to-do of Ancient Rome once donned. Michele’s “Roman Rhapsody” is bold in both its conceptualization and delivery. His fusion of two styles that are more often found in costume shops than on Milan’s runways demonstrates his cultivated aesthetic. What could easily become kitsch, he renders as class, a veritable triumph. His unbridled imagination has yet again produced an unpredictable yet sumptuous feast for whimsical minds. sumptuous feast for whimsical minds. krowdmagazine.com

Paris or Milan Two HISTORIC fashion cities but is one truly the GREATEST?
T BY KIP GILBERT
wo grand cities, home to centuries of art and culture. Places where some of the world’s greatest and most creative minds have joined together, producing works of art which the world has and forever will marvel upon. They are two cities home to a large number of the most monumental fashion houses in the world, but is one truly the greatest? Paris, who holds its claim to the birthplace of fashion and Milan, whose historic ties to the renaissance still hold to true to this day are considerably two of the most significant fashion capitals of the world. A seventeenth century France under the rule of King Louis the XIV boomed as fashion became one of it’s largest economic incomes through domestic and foreign consumerism. The Royal Minister of Finances, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, phrased this phenomena as “Fashion is to France what the gold mines of Peru are to Spain...” krowdmagazine.com
During the sixteenth century and across the continent, Milan was building a name for itself as one of the world’s leading fashion capitals during the height of the Renaissance. The city whose development of luxury goods was placed at such a high level of importance that the city’s name itself came from the English word “Milaner”, having meant luxury apparel such as jewelry, textiles and hats. Today, both cities respectively are home to some of the world’s finest fashion houses. Paris, with Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dior just to begin with and Milan, home to Prada, Versace and Valentino amongst many others are both cities in which fashion has come to take a new name and make a very large impact in the world. Both are marvellous in their respective approaches to elegance and beauty and they each maintain a strong sense of creativity and imagination the designs all the way from street style to haute couture. So is either Paris or Milan truly ‘greater’ than the other in the fashion world? If you look at which city holds the highest sum of consumer apparel sales, you could make a mathematical reasoning to which produces more money usually making it more successful, but that isn’t what fashion is truly about. Both cities hold hundreds of years of history and within those years revolutions, political suppression and intellectual enlightenment has shaped the culture surrounding apparel 118

design. With this in mind, designers from both Paris and Milan may incorporate a taste of their cities cultural history within their designs, each equally beautiful. Coco Chanel changed the game with the introduction of the little black dress and Giorgio Armani revolutionized the use of sophisticated minimalism, for years both Parisian and Milanese fashion have shaped the global consumer market runway by runway. The comparing and contrasting of Parisian and Milanese fashion proves to be a challenge to perform as both hold their own unique yet similar taste. On one hand, Paris tends to focus on the bold and the new, Milan strives for artisanship and the modern revival of the old. While further back in history, fashion defined a particular country or even a city. Today, fashion seems to strive to be something that comes as a universal language, something that unites us. In this day and age, it seems as if the world is finding more and more reasons to differentiate itself from one another. So many are focused on building walls to separate us and not building bridges to unite us; fashion holds the power to be one of those bridges. While both Paris and Milan may differently express themselves through their respective cultures, at the end of the day both cities provide the world with creative innovation in the fashion world.
