n today’s culture, we tend to value straight and sleek lines. We strive for a slim silhouette: two straight legs, two straight arms, a narrow torso, a tight waist. We try to hide the parts of our body that don’t fit that formula. Photographer Isaac Anthony captures the curves of signed model Ariel A. Pierre Louis. Styled by Zach Mauer and Moon Iciana, Ariel unabashedly shows us every inch of what today’s Western society tells women they need to cover up.

an interview with
Laurena
by Symone Evans
Fineus Laurena Fineus is a young independent artist from Ottawa, Canada. Krowd Magazine got to know a little bit more about this artist and what inspires her creativity.
Who is Laurena and how would you describe yourself? What’s your biggest strength/weakness?
I’d made but to my younger self, the simple idea of being good at anything was fulfilling.
I think it was when I turned 13 that I first learned the word “introvert”. Ever since, it’s been the single trait that’s followed me all throughout my life, as if in the sea of labels that have been attributed to me since birth it was the one word to portray me as who I was and not what others see me as.
To answer your question, there was never a discovery of my love for art, it has always been there.
Beyond being a ‘black’, dark skin, French-speaking, Canadian-Haitian woman, I was an introvert. I was anxious, painfully self-aware and had a lisp. In the world we live in, a black woman bearing all these labels couldn’t possibly exist. Black femininity had become this rigid social construct. It had to be strong, witty, and loud. It was either black or white, there was no spectrum. Eventually, it made me want to create or rather put forward a counter-argument with the help of my craft.
As I am still at the beginning of my professional journey, there hasn’t been anything yet that has held that kind of significance to me. I am currently working on a project that’s looking to be one of my most important ones yet. I can’t say much now since there are still some pieces up in the air, but I’m very excited.
Tell me about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.
Whom would you consider as your role model and why?
Whether or not being an introvert was a strength or a weak- To say that my grandmother holds a special place in my life ness, I can’t say but I have learned to live with its perks. It is an understatement. I still have a hard time connecting shaped my mind in more ways than just one. with people but with her it’s different. Our relationship has reached the point that words aren’t needed anymore and her story has become the very essence of my work. At what age did you discover your love for art? Whenever I think of everything she went through I just My oldest memory of art has to be when I was in kinwant to create. I was never particularly fond of the concept dergarten and we were asked to draw something. I can’t of the muse, but she just might be it for me. It may be my pinpoint what the subject matter was but I remember how own skill or talent, yet all I do and have done has always clearly “impressed’’ the teacher was with my piece. As I got older everything became a reason to celebrate.
How do you feel when you pick up a paintbrush and put it on a canvas? I’m probably part of a few artists that paint not to relieve stress but because there is this sense of urgency. Truthfully, painting causes me a great deal of anxiety. My creative process can sometimes become so thorough that once I get to work, I know I will never be able to do it justice. Growing older also makes it more challenging because being a creative person of color comes with so much political baggage that it becomes exhausting. There is social pressure to worry about proper representation and a sense of belonging that art no longer just feels like art. It becomes a divide; there’s art and then there’s “black art”. The two cannot be fused together because “black art” has too much to say to just rely on aesthetics. This issue is something that easily triggers my anxiety. Oddly, it’s a bearable kind of anxiety that I do my best to work through to reach my end goal. When have you been the most satisfied in your life? I just turned 20 about a month ago and that felt incredibly satisfying and unreal. I, Laurena, managed to live for two entire decades! It was beyond satisfaction, I never thought I would be special enough to make it this far. As I got older everything became a reason to celebrate. As an artist, do you handle criticism well or do you take it to heart? I don't have a personality that allows me to do well with confrontation. So criticism is something that I usually take head-on. However, one of the perks of being so painfully self-aware is that no criticism really gets under my skin because I’ve probably already made that same critic to myself beforehand. After all, you are your best critic. Let’s talk about your future. What are your plans and goals for the next few years? Graduating would be great. I am currently in my third year of university and studying towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Ottawa. I am also currently considering postgraduate studies in art curatorial programs in Toronto. If I could have a few solo exhibitions along the way that would be a plus.
What’s your favorite quote or mantra? I’ve been thinking about the idea of empathy versus sympathy lately. What would a world where we could all feel empathy instead of sympathy be like? It’s easy to have sympathy; empathy is about looking beyond what keeps us comfortable. If we could share each others pain, then maybe we would be able to change. It’s the lack of understanding the depth of emotions between our fellow man that seems to cause so much tension and aggression in our current social climate. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? My free time (excluding anything artistic) is made of 30-minute-long skincare routines, cooking, writing, wine tasting in front of 90’s Shoujo animes and so much more. When I do decide to leave the house, it’s usually only to go out to eat with friends. I try to keep a certain order in my life when I’m not doing art because my artistic life is hectic enough on its own. What piece of advice would you give to your younger self? This past winter I caught myself crying unexpectedly, my mind ended up wandering in the gutter. There’s this thing about being an introvert that makes it hard to express your feelings to others and sometimes to yourself. It’s always been in my nature to be immune to whatever pain I was going through because it was easy for me to just dismiss it. Since the pain had nowhere to go, I repressed it. The concept of being sad just to be sad seemed cringe-worthy to me. It was a similar feeling to watching myself cry from an outsider’s point of view. I didn’t want to see myself as this pitiful character. I think this is due to my need or perhaps society’s ne\ to see me as a strong, independent black woman. However, that day I allowed myself to feel the pain. I was finally able to accept and release all those past feelings of stress, frustration, and sadness. When it was all over, I felt as if I had cleansed all the repressed negativity from my body. My advice to my younger self would be to allow myself to feel all my emotions rather than let them just build up inside me. By feeling and then releasing our emotions, we’re able to move on from frustration and sadness and then enjoy the positive things in life.

@LINACOCE Story by AVERY VOSS
Meet upcoming blogger Lina Corredor Celemin (@linacoce). Lina is full of positivity, light and a very unique personality. I had the opportunity to interview this beautiful woman and find out what her dreams are and who inspires her.
total look @LAMARIEDESIGN shoes NIKE
How would you describe yourself? I would describe myself as a spiritual person and a dreamer full of wanderlust. I am a little impatient but always grateful in the big and small things. I have met incredible people and traveled to beautiful places which has made me believe in dreams, energies and hardwork as the main motivation to accomplish your dreams. How long have you been blogging? I’m not sure when I started “blogging” but I know that somehow I wanted to put together my memories. If I have to define time, I would say maybe two years ago. I studied graphic design so I pour my heart into it and take beautiful photos. Tell me about an accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career/life? One of my greatest achievements was leaving my job to pursue what I love. I would like to create my own fashion line and continue to travel to incredible places. At first I was afraid to do it but life is too short to let your dreams pass you by. Who would you consider as your role model and why? My role model is my mom. She is my super hero. I have always admired how she goes through difficult situations and yet she always sees the best of each person. She has a unique way of bringing light to each person she meets and always has a big smile no matter what. I love you mom!! What are some of the challenges you face as an influencer and do you let it affect your daily life? ie. Negative feedback, trolls. I think the biggest challenge is opening your entire world to people who see your blog and make judgments about you without knowing who you are. However I don’t let it affect me. I think the most important thing is to be clear with the things you say and do.
What are five beauty products you can’t live without? My top 5 beauty products would definitely be my Vichy face moisturizer, my Benefit blush, my Burberry perfume, my eyebrow brush and of course my Benefit mascara. Tell us about a place you have visited and why you loved it so much? It is so difficult to choose just one place! I have fallen in love with all the cities that I’ve been for different reasons but I will always have Phuket,Thailand in my heart. The spirituality, food, warmth of the people, the pleasure of having a traditional culture so close to you and of course the incredible beaches What can we find in your in your airplane carry on that you can’ travel without ? I always advise people to stay hydrated when traveling all the time! I carry water, moisturizer, wet wipes, thermal water for my face, cocconut oil for my lips, earphones, my phone, sketchbook and dry fruit! What advice would you share with young women interested in starting a blog? My biggest piece of advice is to be authentic! Don’t get sucked in by what is “popular” but rather find what works for you and be pure to yourself! Raise your voice for the things that matter to you. Remember to relax and enjoy the journey because good things come when you do everything with your heart. I love asking this question because everyone’s answer is always so unique. What piece of advice would you give to your younger self? I would tell my younger self: Don’t take it too seriously, everything happens for a good reason, enjoy every single moment and don’t rush.

R MAYER ROSS fashion designer
Story by PATRICIA COLE
This year, we fell in love with Mayer Man and his long oversized trench coats at TFW (Toronto Fashion Week) and ever since, he has been our menswear inspiration. Ross Mayer’s designs are a beautiful blend of street style meets modern high end fashion. We caught up with Ross and talked more about his journey and what we should expect to see this F/W from Mayer Man.

When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career as a designer?
many instances in my formative years where I made sales to stores, so thrilled I had found a place to sell and had such a hard time collecting payments. In hindsight I would have been stricter and if they could not have respected my product or the fact I was new and things were a struggle perhaps they were not the store for my product anyway.
It was at a young age I first realized that I had a love for clothing and looked to my mother and grandmother and their incredible wardrobes of French designer creations where the fabrics and details were incredible works of art
How is working in fashion different today than from when you started out?
What was your first job in fashion, and how did you land that position?
Today we live in a digital world where we are globally connected. There is such a need for immediacy in everything from the latest shows, celebrity trend spotting to purchasing the latest looks all at break-neck speed. Social media rules the fashion game and we all have to wear many more hats than simply that of a designer.
My first foray into fashion was actually in the vintage clothing business. I would go on buying trips to the US where we went to some of the most incredible estate sales and picked up amazing pieces from past decades. It was from there I further developed my love for impeccable detailing and finishes.
What was your biggest fear when going out and starting your own line?
If you could go back and tell yourself one thing before beginning your career what would it be?
Trust in the process, creation is a journey and although the I think it was like anyone, will I be good enough. Will people like what I have done and will it sell. In making my path may deviate, it’s so important to stay true to your vision and yourself; believe in your talents and never give up! MayerMan collection I think I was most concerned with finding the retailers that were willing to take a chance on a new collection in times when it seems most don’t veer far What was the biggest rookie mistake you made when from established brands. just starting out? I think I was too trusting with people. Fashion is a cut throat business and full of high risk challenges. There were
160
How was your experience at Toronto Men’s Fashion Week 2018 and what would you have done better? I introduced a few female looks in my men’s collection and would have liked to add a few more. I feel so strongly about diversity and used a wide variety of models but I would have liked to go so much further with that to have included a variety of ages, body sizes etc. Fashion for me is all a state of mind and the thing I love the most about our culture today is that it’s becoming far more fluid blurring boundaries between what was once conventional. What should we expect to see from you this F/W season? For fall 2018 the MayerMan collection is exploding with amazing coats and jackets teamed with cool street-style separates that give a really cool vibe to once more formal dressing. My collection statement has also been “Lux Meet’s Street.” What is your favorite part about being a designer? It’s the creative process. Nothing is better for me to work with fabrics, develop sketches and see my visions become a reality on the runway.! There’s so much pressure for designers to come out with their greatest collection season after season. What advice would you give to young designers just starting out and hoping to make it in the industry? Choose a niche product that narrowly focuses on a specific customer and identifies a need in the market and hopefully solves a specific problem. The marketplace is crowded with products and for a newbie it’s a tough haul so get creative and become super specific in the beginning. From there you will be able to spread your wings and fly!
