LOOK İki şeyi karşılaştırmak istediğimizde bazı sıfatlar kullanmak durumunda kalırız. Karşılaştırma cümlelerinde sıfatların hece yapısı önemlidir. Eğer kullandığımız sıfat tek heceli ve kısa yazılan bir sıfat ise “daha” anlamı vermek için o sıfata (-er) takısı ekleriz. - Betty is slimmer than Molly. (Betty, Molly’den daha ince/zayıftır.) - My father is older than my mother. (Babam, annemden daha yaşlıdır.) - Ankara is colder than İzmir. (Ankara, İzmir’den daha soğuktur.) Karşılaştırmada kullandığımız sıfat iki veya daha fazla heceli ise, yazılış olarak uzun ise, o zaman (-er) takısı eklemeyiz. Bunun yerine o sıfatımızın önüne more (daha) kelimesi getiririz. - Mike is more handsome than John. (Mike, John’dan daha kışıklı.) - French is more difficult than English. (Fransızca, İngilizce’den daha zordur.) - My father is more generous than my uncle. (Babam, amcamdan daha cömertir.) Sonu bir sessiz harf ve ‘‘y’’ harfiyle birlikte olan sıfatların sonuna (-er) takısı ekleyeceğimizde ‘‘y’’ harfini düşer, yerine (-ier) eklenir. heavy – heavier

Tek heceli ve kısa olan sıfatlarda (-er) takısı eklerken sesli harften sonra gelen sessiz harf çift yazılarak (-er) eklenir. hot – hotter

Bazı sıfatlar ise düzensizdir. Karşılaştırma cümlelerinde kullanacağımızda ne (-er) takısı eklenir, ne de başına (more) kelimesi getirilir. Bu sıfatlar “daha” anlamında kullanıldığında kelime değişir. Bu değişimin bir kuralı olmadığı için, bu kelimeler bu halleriyle öğrenilmesi gerekir. good (iyi) – better (daha iyi)
