In the twilight of the house a man with a liquid look in his eyes talks to the silence of the ebb filling the rooms.

Good afternoon. 2 Hello… What can I get you? / A coffee with milk, please. 3 It’s a nice afternoon for a drive, even with the road being so curvy. Must be a horror in bad weather, no? / It’s going to rain in a bit. Before night falls, you’ll see. / Drive cautiously when you leave. 4 Maybe… I’ll stay for a
days… / Why? Do you have family here? 5 No… I’m trying to find a… a friend of my granddad’s. An emigrant. People from here left for America, right?

1 Yes, but that was a long time ago. What decade are we talking? / Well, the end of the thirties. 2 Goodness! Who’s going to remember that? In the sixties some people still left, for Venezuela… / No, I’m talking about Cuba. 3 Somebody did leave for Cuba in those years… All the Saníns left, didn’t they? And the old Quintás man, and two of the Xonas.. And people from up the mountain. 4 What did you say was the name of your grandfather’s friend? / Well… I don’t know… 5 I know that he was from around here, that he was in Cuba those years, that he was a sailor… Granddad’s name was Francisco, Francisco Lamas… They were mates. 6 That’s not a lot of information. It’s not going to be easy for you. 7 Anyway, it’s useless…

1 In a small town named *** worked one infamous dentist. 2 Dr. Toot de Cay
3 He was incredibly cruel & harsh. All the children feared him & would pray night & day for his demise. 4 Oh lord save us!

MENGWEI CHEN: KUOLLEIDEN KIRJAT / THE BOOKS OF THE DEAD

1 In this city, writing holds a kind of magic. 2 The mayor decreed that every person must write themselves into a book before they die

5 Two more pages! Just two more pages and you’ll finally find relief! / You can only die once you’ve written the entire book.

1 Once these books are opened, 3 the language that describes their lives transforms into illusions, 4 bursting forth from the pages and then slowly dissolving.

1

Some people’s illusions are rich and beautiful, 2 while others are shriveled, crumbled shapes. 3 The books of the dead are stored in the city archives. / Those of famous individuals are studied, exhibited or even auctioned off.

1 Those with secrets they wish to carry to their graves write in metaphors — 2 abstract visions that defy comprehension, / or that only certain people could ever understand.

1 Many buy the books of scholars, placing glass cases over the illusions before they fade, preserving them for research. 2 Just days ago, the book of a linguist who had suddenly passed was deciphered. The buyer, having paid a fortune, hoped to inherit the linguist’s unfinished work. 3 But the linguist had only written about a single afternoon in autumn when he was eight years old, lying on the grass with friends beneath the sun.
