Integrated Process Architecture as a Basis for ISO 9001:2000 Certification Quality managers who are building a process map of their company to comply with the 2000 revision of ISO 9000 can only meaningfully translate the core idea of the new standard if they can · graphically represent the processes of their companies, and · integrate them into a continuous process architecture. Many tools currently on the market can help graphically represent processes. Most of these tools, however, are only able to visualize parts of processes, isolated from each other. The processes can then frequently only be joined by using document management systems and hyperlink techniques. In this way, however, the result is a network of documents, rather than an integrated process architecture. But it is precisely the integrated process architecture that offers a crucial added value. It allows for a uniform logical integration among processes and the elements of the organization structure. Such integrated representations are only possible with modeling tools that are supported by methods and rooted in databases. The basic idea of the Quality Management Scout developed by IDS Scheer AG in cooperation with Dietz Consulting is linking such a modeling tool with QM-related content (Figure1). The Quality Management Scout is based on ARIS, a worldleading modeling tool, and answers important questions that a quality manager asks him- or herself when developing a QM system: What is the task? The answer provides a structured action model that describes in detail the stages, work packages, and individual activities of a certification project. Furthermore, appropriate checklists, audit questionnaires, and other assistance are offered for each activity. How should the result (the QM system) be constructed? The Quality Management Scout contains skeleton process models that need only be adapted to the particular project. Explanations about the construction of the process model database make it easy to methodically implement a procedure. How can the result be presented and published? The automatic generation of a web-based process manual permits a paperless publication of results. How can the system be continuously developed and improved? Change management processes have also been included in the skeleton processes.
An integrated process architecture can not only make the complexity of all processes within a company transparent, it is also an important basis for the development of the QM system towards an integrated management system in which all important management tools of the company are integrated along the process chains, which serve as a guide. The Quality Management Scout helps, thus, not only in the efficient construction of a QM system in compliance with the requirements of the 2000 revision, but also creates the basis for a pioneering management tool.
