Inleiding Kijk in de spiegel en zie wie je bent: een uniek mens, waardevol en vol mogelijkheden. Kijkend in de spiegel zie je jezelf. Maar als je goed kijkt, zie je nog meer: Af en toe valt er ook iets te zien van een wereld die ons overstijgt. Kijkend in de spiegel kom je iets op het spoor van een Verhaal, het verhaal van God en mensen. In deze lesmap staat dat verhaal centraal. Vandaar ook de naam van de methode: Het verhaal centraal. De methode is een geheel vernieuwde versie van de eerdere methode met dezelfde naam (Centrum voor Educatie Driebergen, 1997). Net als de eerste versie richt deze nieuwe uitgave zich op kinderen in groep 6, 7 en 8 van de openbare basisschool. Ze is bestemd voor gebruik door een bevoegde leerkracht Godsdienstig Vormingsonderwijs op openbare basisscholen in Nederland. We hebben daarbij een leerkracht GVO voor ogen die, met zijn / haar eigen kwaliteiten, voor en tussen de groep staat en die een bijzondere plaats inneemt naast het onderwijsgevend team van de school. De naam van de methode geeft het fundament ervan aan: het Verhaal van God met mensen en van mensen met God, zoals we dat bij uitstek lezen in de Bijbel. De methode ‘Het verhaal centraal’ wil kinderen op creatieve en persoonlijke wijze in gesprek brengen met dit Verhaal.
Opbouw De methode ‘Het verhaal centraal’ bestaat uit 2 lesmappen. Elke lesmap heeft voldoende materiaal en suggesties voor één schooljaar. In het daaropvolgende schooljaar kan dan gebruik worden gemaakt van het andere deel. Beide lesmappen bestaan uit zes blokken, waarin de volgende thema’s centraal staan: het kind met zijn persoonlijke visies, vragen, twijfels, dromen en ervaringen de ander, die een relatie met je heeft en jou iets te vertellen heeft God, die overstijgt wat je zintuigen kunnen waarnemen de wereld, waarin verschillen en problemen mensen uitdagen het leven, dat gekenmerkt wordt door grenservaringen de tijd, die uitnodigt tot het verkennen van vroeger en later. De thematiek van de blokken is weergegeven in thematekeningen, die op verschillende momenten in de blokken aan de orde komen. U vindt de thematekeningen steeds aan het begin van een nieuw blok. Elk blok bevat suggesties en materiaal voor vijf lessen. Daarnaast worden in beide mappen vijf extra lessen aageboden die op bepaalde momenten in het jaar kunnen worden ingezet.
De meeste lesactiviteiten bestaan uit een inleiding, een kern en een afsluiting. Verschillende onderdelen van elke lesactiviteit doen een beroep op het ontdekkend en creatief vermogen van kinderen, waarbij veelvuldig samengewerkt wordt. Naast een beschrijving van de lessen wordt een rijke schat aan werkbladen aangereikt, die voor alle kinderen gekopiëerd kunnen worden. Op de werkbladen kunnen opdrachten staan, maar bijvoorbeeld ook verhalen, gedichten en illustraties. De werkbladen kunnen door alle leerlingen afzonderlijk verzameld worden in een mooie portfolio. Op deze website vindt u de illustraties uit de methode, de links naar de websites die bij verschillende lessen gebruikt kunnen worden en ander materiaal.
Benadering Het verhaal centraal benadert het Verhaal van God met mensen en mensen met God veelkleurig en veelzijdig. De methode richt zich daarbij vooral op de brede christelijke traditie. Hieronder worden verhalen en teksten uit de Bijbel en ook thema’s en verhalen uit de geschiedenis van het Christendom geschaard. Maar het Verhaal kan ook aan de orde gebracht worden door teksten en visies uit andere tradities. Het Verhaal van God en mensen kan niet zonder aandacht voor de herkenbare wereld van kinderen: Het verhaal centraal wil bijbelse thema’s ter sprake brengen in de herkenbare werkelijkheid. Dit betekent dat uitgegaan wordt van thema’s die een rol (kunnen) spelen in de belevingswereld van kinderen. De thema’s vormen het vertrekpunt van waaruit de godsdienstige teksten ter sprake komen. Vragen over het verhaal Wat vind jij mooi in dit verhaal? Waarom wil de muis eigenlijk anders worden? Wat bedoelt de muis als hij zegt: ‘Om sterk en machtig tezijn, hoef ik alleen maar mezelf te zijn’? Wat betekent volgens jou ‘jezelf zijn’? Wie van jullie wil ook wel eens iemand anders zijn? Wie zou je dan willen zijn? Wat zou er dan anders zijn? Zou je je dan ook anders voelen?
Spel Speel het volgende spel: Neem als leerkracht een van de leerlingen in gedachten en schrijf van die persoon vijf kenmerken op. Denk daarbij aan kleur ogen, jongen / meisje, wel of geen bril, kleur sokken, links- of rechtshandig, wel of geen broers / zussen, kleur trui / t-shirt, kleur broek, kleur haar, etc. Alle leerlingen gaan staan. Noem steeds een kenmerk van het lijstje, waarbij alleen de leerlingen blijven staan die daaraan voldoen. Hoeveel leerlingen staan nog na vijf vragen? Alleen het ene kind dat u in gedachten had? Of nog een paar?

Doe dit eerst een keer zelf met de groep, daarna kan ook een leerling een andere leerling in gedachten nemen en het proberen.
Blok 1 - Ik ben ik
Filosoferen Schrijf de volgende zin op de ene helft van het bord: Wat is uniek zijn? Geef elke leerling een kaartje om het antwoord op te schrijven, groot en duidelijk leesbaar. Vervolgens hangen de leerlingen hun kaartje rondom de zin op het bord en gaan weer zitten. Als alle leerlingen klaar zijn en weer zitten, bekijk dan met elkaar de antwoorden die op de kaartjes zijn geschreven. Vertel ter verduidelijking dat uniek zijn te maken heeft met bijzonder zijn. Zoals jij is er maar één! Schrijf op de andere helft van het bord de zin: Wat is identiteit? Deel weer kaartjes uit (eventueel met een andere kleur), waarop de leerlingen hun antwoorden kunnen schrijven en ophangen. Bekijk alle kaartjes. Vertel ter verduidelijking over kenmerken die op een paspoort staan: lengte, leeftijd, geboorteplaats, foto etc. Al deze en nog veel meer (innerlijke en uiterlijke) kenmerken zijn onderdeel van je identiteit. Net als de kenmerken die genoemd zijn bij het spel hiervoor. Probeer met de leerlingen een antwoord te vinden op de vraag wat een mens uniek maakt en hoe identiteit daarmee te maken heeft: Zijn er antwoorden op de kaartjes die zowel passen bij uniek zijn als bij identiteit? Welke antwoorden passen alleen bij één van beide vragen? Of passen alle antwoorden bij beide? Vind jij jezelf uniek? Wat heb jij dat niemand anders heeft?

Vind je het fijn om uniek te zijn, of wil je liever net zo zijn als andere mensen? Waarom?
Extra: Hints Speel met de groep hints. Gebruik daarvoor de kaartjes van het werkblad op bladzijde 00. KopiĂŤer het werkblad op stevig papier en knip de kaartjes uit. De figuren van de kaartjes moeten uitgebeeld worden. Begrijpt de rest van de groep wie er bedoeld wordt? Om er een wedstrijdelement aan toe te voegen, kunt u de klas verdelen in groepjes van ongeveer vijf kinderen. Per groepje moet steeds een kind uitbeelden, de rest van de groep moet raden. Binnen een minuut het goede antwoord levert vijf punten op.
