Food was the tie that bound my family together when Bobby and I were growing up and, as adults, it has literally saved us from a lifetime of instability and countless struggles. My memories spread out over the many different kitchens of our extended family. My Granny Paul had a tiny kitchen in her trailer on the edge of Lee County, Georgia. It wasn’t even a double-wide, but the food and flavor she created there could have filled a palace. Her garden was the first dirt I ever pulled food from: potatoes, squash, tomatoes, and my favorite, fresh collard greens. Her neighbor Mr. Carr allowed Bobby and me to pick fresh strawberries from his wondrous plants of overflowing berries. I was nine years

If you would’ve told me twenty years ago that I’d eat—and enjoy—a black bean burger, I would’ve slapped you upside the head with a quarter pounder. Black bean burgers were for sorority girls, not a meat eater like myself. I was reintroduced to black beans while working in our restaurant, where we served them with crab cakes. I spent many a day hunched over the stove, tweaking the seasoning so that the beans had just enough bite without overpowering the crab cakes. These black bean patties are a twist on my mom’s old recipe. Growing up, she’d make us what she called bean-cake sandwiches. Come to think of it, Momma made cakes out of just about anything—corn, black-eyed peas, butter (y’all gotta try her Gooey Butter Cake)—so I guess it’s only natural for me to make a savory bean sandwich for my boys as well. I’ve added edamame to the mix for a pop of green and topped it all off with homemade Fresh Pico de Gallo, which is sure to earn Jack and Matthew some future points from the sorority girls . . .

What’s ratatouille? Pretty much, it’s just a fun way to describe sautéed vegetables. Some chefs can get kind of particular about what defines the traditional dish, but without overthinking it, it’s basically a vegetable hash that includes tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, zucchini, and basil. The addition of a mild and affordable fish such as halibut upgrades ratatouille from a side dish to a main one.

Includes A Plan of Action with simple steps to help you prevent, treat and even reverse osteoporosis.
How to prevent, treat and reverse it
How to prevent, treat and reverse it
• Osteoporosis: What is it and how can it affect you? • Your Risk: What can you do to minimise it? • Prevention: Can you avoid getting osteoporosis? • Food: Which foods are best for healthy bones? • Drugs: What are the benefits and side effects? • Exercises: Which are best for building strong bones? • Genes: Is osteoporosis really hereditary?
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis
The latest research from The National Osteoporosis Society is that one in two women over the age of 50 will break a bone because of osteoporosis, but that doesn’t have to be you. A few minor adjustments to your diet and lifestyle will put you in control of your bone health, now and in the future. Dr Marilyn Glenville PhD cuts through the myths and the science and gives you a clear, easy-to-follow plan of action for strong, healthy bones for the rest of your life.

charming small hotels britain & ireland DU NCA N PETERSEN
The 17th edition of Charming Small Hotels Britain & Ireland is the latest title in the 2013 series relaunch of these popular guides, complete with beautifully designed new covers, an interesting blend of the contemporary and the traditional, which suits the series perfectly. The series, which has been published continuously since 1988, doesn’t just review sleepy places to stay off-the-beaten-track, but all types of hotels, including the chic and the stylish. Above all this is a truly independent guide. It’s one of only two that don’t take money for a page, and its focus on small hotels, plus the reputation of its editor, Fiona Duncan, hotel critic of the Sunday Telegraph, make the rest of the accommodation guides look like also-rans.
‘I just had to congratulate you on your wonderful publication. Thank you for the best and most reliable travel book we have ever used.’ Sylvia Tucker, reader

in a box Series ‘A genuine innovation in the field of walking guides.’
This new format for travel guides carries on proving its worth. The first title, Walker’s Britain in a Box, has now sold over 80,000 copies. Cyclist’s Britain in a Box and its companion guide Off-Road Cyclist’s Britain in a Box are strong sellers too, as are Weekend Walks and Birdwatcher’s Walks in a Box. The In a Box series has now expanded further, with the publication of Britain on Backroads in a Box.

Yorkshire Dales and South Pennines in a Box, Walker’s London and the South-East in a Box, and two European titles, Tuscany and Provence. No other travel series combines innovative packaging and presentation with diverse, imaginative subjects. The latest addition to the ‘In a Box’ series is Britain on Backroads. This innovative new talking guide for motor tourists shows how to leave behind the motorways and main roads to experience another Britain. An audio CD, voiced by Fiona Duncan, travel writer and Sunday Telegraph hotel critic, and folding cards work together to create a unique touring guide. The design concept for the In a Box guides are Registered Community Designs (No: 001121404-0001, date of certificate: 14th April 2009). Copying or reproduction in any form is illegal.

Exploring cities with the On Foot Guides is like being taken around by a friend who knows the best restaurants, shops and attractions – the authors are local residents who know their cities backwards. Each book introduces the city district by district, with a wealth of insider knowledge. The artwork is unique and the walks are easy to follow, informative and fun. Most take an hour, and many can be interlinked to create longer sightseeing expeditions.
