Nothing says school’s out to me like finally getting to pick out my own reads for a few months. To my delight, starting on Page 44, LN copy editor and staff writer Bryan A. or John Ryan, tradition isn’t just the name of his agency– it is his mantra as he continues his mother Ann Ryan’s legacy as a pioneer in luxury real estate. After jumping into real estate to work alongside his mother right after college, he has consistently ranked as a top agent within Coldwell Banker Realty – Gundaker. “His mother started the business and was known for professionalism, integrity and incredible knowledge of luxury real estate,” says Corinne McGrady, Coldwell Banker Gundaker branch manager. “He, too, has carried forward those same traits and has grown the business into what it is today. He has represented some of the most notable luxury sales in St. Louis and is widely recognized as a top agent and expert in luxury real estate.” This year, Ryan was further recognized for his passion and commitment to excellence with his induction into the Coldwell Banker Realty – Gundaker Hall of Fame. Established in 1991 by Gundaker Realtors, the Hall of Fame is Coldwell Banker Realty – Gundaker’s most prestigious honor, recognizing those employees and agents who have demonstrated the highest levels of performance and professionalism

within the company and within the real estate brokerage industry. Ryan says he feels honored to be one of only 43 inductees since 1991. “My partner – and mother – received this award 20 years ago, so the tradition continues,” he says. The Ryan Tradition continues to stand out through its dedication to knowledge, service and its relationships with its clients. Ryan loves selling St. Louis and all it has to offer, and helping buyers and sellers achieve their real estate dreams. “We have had the opportunity to be involved in the most significant transactions and to represent an incredible array of clients over the past 30 years,” Ryan adds. “We had the highest-price sale in the market and largest estate property sold in 2021.” “John’s passion and commitment to excellence for his craft are truly inspiring,” McGrady concludes. “He has been a loyal agent to Coldwell Banker Realty – Gundaker for decades, and we appreciate and celebrate him every single day!” John Ryan, The Ryan Tradition, Coldwell Banker Realty – Gundaker, 314-941-0572, theryantradition.com

based advocacy group, estimates that more than 40 million U.S. adults – about 20 percent – have a diagnosable anxiety disorder. “We have seen the percentage of children with trauma symptoms double in the past two years,” Radke says. “We follow trauma-informed care practices on the inpatient units, which means that all of my patients are screened for trauma symptoms. The number of patients who have symptoms consistent with a clinical level of concern has almost doubled since prior to the pandemic. I’m not sure why this has occurred; several articles have been written on this, and they’re calling it ‘pandemic-related’ [posttraumatic stress disorder].” Radke urges people to consider the intensive outpatient care option, which provides group and individual therapy sessions twice a week for up to three weeks and has a wait time of only one or two weeks. She also recommends a number of important lifestyle factors that can help manage mental health issues. She advises taking a multivitamin with activated folate and EPA/DHA ( fish oil) daily, getting seven to eight hours of sleep nightly and exercising regularly. “I also encourage people not to wait for others to reach out to them, but to be the one that creates a community,” she adds. “If you’re struggling with negative, self-
critical thoughts or feel hopeless or helpless, I recommend you reach out to your primary care physician first and ask them for direction and care, and if you’re having thoughts of suicide, please reach out to a friend, a colleague, and to one of our many local resources to talk with people who really do want to support you and help you find just the right care connection.” The Mercy Behavioral Health access center is available 24/7 and can provide direction on accessing area mental health resources. “Mercy Behavioral Health offers free, confidential evaluations for anyone who has a concern about a psychiatric, behavioral or addictive disorder,” Radke notes. “Evaluations, as well as referrals to physicians or community resources, are available 24 hours a day. Call 314-251-0555.”

here are only so many mental health providers out there, and they were busy before the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, says Dr. Shelah Radke, demand far outweighs supply, causing people with depression, anxiety and other mental health challenges to face waits of up to eight months to see an outpatient mental health professional. Radke is a co-medical director for the Mercy Behavioral Health access center at Mercy Hospital and is a child and adolescent psychiatric physician hospitalist at Mercy St. Louis. She says helping those in need access care during the pandemic is challenging, but “there have been some good changes – outpatient clinics are working virtually and in person now, which provides a nice mix for patients, depending on their needs.” In fact, the increased focus on virtual care has improved access for some children. “More and more, schools are cooperating with us and enabling us to provide services like IOP [intensive outpatient] virtually during the school day, meaning a child could potentially leave their classroom, walk down the hall to a school media room and log on to a therapy session with their IOP group, and be able to participate in that essential care model in a confidential fashion, while not requiring parents to drive to and from school and IOP over the course of a day,” she says. Still, the heavy demand is stressing a system already at capacity. A 2021 study published in The Lancet, the distinguished weekly peer-reviewed general medical journal, examined data from more than 200 countries during the pandemic’s first year and “estimated a significant increase in the prevalence of both major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders since before the pandemic. Increased prevalence was seen for both males and females across the lifespan. These findings are all the more concerning because depressive and anxiety disorders were already leading causes of disability worldwide.” Furthermore, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, an Arlington, Virginia-

BUSINESS NOTES
Adventure Is Out There
A
longtime international adventure company now calls St. Louis home. Well, sort of. Founded in 2000, Fit 4 Adventure is a travel service company that takes adventure tourists around the U.S. and across the globe to enjoy everything from hiking excursions in Bryce Canyon, Utah, to cycling tours on the island of Mallorca/Majorca, Spain, to the Boston Marathon in Massachusetts. In February 2022, the company announced that it had been acquired by a partnership formed among three of its employees – two of whom live in the metro area. But for the new owners, “home” is out in the wild. “It would be hard to run a ‘home’ office when we are never home,” says Joe Dann, a resident of Clayton and new co-owner alongside Nick Tilley of St. Louis and Kris Corbett, who lives in Graham, Texas. “We are an online company with remote workers, which means wherever we are in the country or the world, we can stay on top of business and responsive to clients.” Since 2015, Fit 4 Adventure has operated

entirely online – “no bricks, no borders,” as Dann puts it. Although most of the company’s client base lives in Dallas – where Fit 4 Adventure originated under the name Golden Adventures – the minds behind the new partnership are thinking bigger. “Under the new partnership, we are expanding our outreach, starting in the St. Louis area,” Dann says. “It seems like our multi-sport adventures are getting a lot of attention right now, like Costa Rica, Iceland, Guatemala, Patagonia, Alaska and Mallorca. Our multisport vacations deliver a taste of everything the destination has to offer, and each day offers a different active adventure.” The acquisition and expansion have come at a time when Americans are feeling especially restless. At the end of 2021, the online travel service Expedia released its 2022 Travel Trends Report, which found that this year, travelers are seeking excitement and exhilaration. In other words, people want to go big. “We are all ready to come out of isolation and get back to traveling and exploring,” Dann adds. “I was on the phone with a longtime client this week,
and she talked about how much she has missed experiencing new places and meeting new friends on our trips.” Statistics show nearly half of all travelers plan to use an advisor after the pandemic. Who better to trust than the people who know the path best? Dann himself has tallied more than 12 years at Fit 4 Adventure, and with the world (hopefully) returning to some semblance of normalcy, the travel industry is in a good position to help people get out and make the most of their trips. “We’ve been there,” Dann says. “We’ve scouted and vetted. We’ve tasted and tested. We know what to pack and how to prepare. We have trusted friends and partners at each of our destinations, and that can help things roll more smoothly.”

Facing the Fear By Amanda Dahl

t age 60, Jonathan Whiting of Kirkwood is setting out to swim 21 miles across the English Channel this summer to honor his late wife, Lori, who died in 2016 from a rare bile duct cancer. His mission serves a dual purpose, as Whiting will also be raising funds and awareness for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation, a nonprofit that focuses on that cancer. “When Lori was receiving treatments at the National Institutes of Health, she met an advocate from the foundation,” Whiting says. “This advocate is a survivor of cholangiocarcinoma – and so they became friends. I thought of swimming the English Channel, and my first call was to the foundation.” Whiting’s wife has had a profound impact on her family and community, as evidenced by the left wing of Kirkwood’s Keysor Elementary School, which was named after Lori, who worked there for only four months before receiving her cancer diagnosis. “That’s the kind of effect she had,” Whiting says. “We always looked at silver linings in our relationships. She was never afraid. She has taught me to embrace my fears.” A lifelong runner and triathlete, Whiting will face an immense physical and mental challenge when he takes to the open water this July. He has been training with his coach, Carol Breiter, who swam the English Channel in 1983, to acclimate his body to the colder temperatures of the channel (between 57 and 60 degrees, on average). No thermal-protected wet suits are allowed for the famous swim – only a protectant grease over a participant’s swimming garment. This month, Whiting heads to Maui, Hawaii, for a long-distance ocean swim to prepare for seasickness. “I’m definitely facing some of my own fears,” he says. “I’m not really crazy about swimming where there are other things I can’t see that swim faster than me … like sharks,” he says with a laugh. “I will say, there are no sharks in the English Channel because the water’s too cold! I will definitely encounter jellyfish in the middle, but they’re not lethal.” He says he will also be dodging cargo ships
“[Lori] was never afraid. She has taught me to embrace my fears. I’m definitely facing some of my own fears.” when he swims the channel, which is the largest shipping channel in the world. “There are huge cargo ships that I might have to wait and let pass by,” Whiting says. “Once I start, I can’t stop. Even though the channel is 21 miles across, with high and low tides, it’s closer to 28 miles. I’m thinking it will be 14 to 18 hours [that I’ll swim].” A boat will follow alongside Whiting and carry
a limited number of supporters who will feed him by a stick. Less than 10 pilots are registered to steer the boat beside the swimmers, and Whiting lucked out in securing one who had a cancellation for this year. “[Lori] prepared us for the future,” Whiting says. “She would tell me to move on but not forget about her. Of course, you can tell, I have not forgotten about her.” Follow along and support Whiting’s journey as he honors the memory of his wife at 21milesofhope.org.

Chasing Waterfalls ExpEriEncE a rEfrEshing momEnt in naturE this sEason. By amanda Dahl
Welcome the rainy season with a visit to Mother Nature’s most dramatic geographic features close enough for a daytrip from the greater St. Louis metropolitan area. Here’s your guide to finding both wet-weather and year-round waterfalls in the Show Me State and Illinois.
Wet-Weather Falls rocky falls Winona Township, Missouri, nps.gov
Where: 3 hours from Ladue Trail Difficulty: Easy Bring Along: Little ones and leashed dogs Down in the Ozarks, the Rocky Falls Shut-In Trail leads you to the base of the waterfall, where a pool makes for a delightful swimming hole. Pack your water shoes for ease in crossing the creek. As you relax in the water or capture breathtaking photos of the falls, appreciate the reddishbrown rock, which was once molten and flowed to the surface around 1½ billion years ago, according to the National Parks Service. Where: 45 minutes from Ladue Trail Difficulty: Moderate Bring Along: Binoculars for birdwatching, little ones and leashed dogs Wear hiking boots to take on the Sandstone Canyon Trail. In under 3 hours, you can cover the almost 4-mile loop, but stop off and enjoy the scenery, from cheerful wildflowers to active avians, as well as the canyon pool with a wetweather waterfall. Once the personal property and sanctuary of the late metro area entrepreneur Don Robinson, this incredible escape feels a world away though not far from the urban area.
Where: 45 minutes from Ladue Photo by Missouri Department of Conservation
Trail Difficulty: Moderate
Bring Along: Leashed dogs, bug spray A rugged hike along this almost 3-mile loop takes you across narrow valleys, canyons and bluffs, and past shelter caves and forested hills. LaBarque Creek is a popular spot for hikers and trail runners. It’s also home to a notable number of fish species, greater than that of any other Meramec River tributary below LaBarque, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation website. The trail takes less than 1½ hours and can reward you with a small, multi-tiered waterfall after a heavy rain.
Mina sauk Falls Taum Sauk Mountain State Park, Arcadia Township, Missouri, mostateparks.com/park/ taum-sauk-mountain-state-park
Where: Less than 2 hours from Ladue Trail Difficulty: Moderate Bring Along: Little ones and leashed dogs Mina Sauk Falls Trail is an almost 3-mile loop that may be a slight challenge – but that doesn’t stop it from being popular. Pack snacks for the nearly 3-hour-long hike, and enjoy the idyllic St. Francois Mountains. Early in your tour, you’ll reach Missouri’s highest elevation point, at 1,772 feet above sea level, according to the Missouri State Parks website. Best yet? Discover the state’s tallest waterfall, Mina Sauk Falls, which (during wetter seasons) can drop 132 feet down a rocky volcanic ledge.

Northeast of Farmington, the Hickory Canyons Natural Area offers a short (less than a half-mile) but moderate hike along its Eastern Trail that leads to a small spring and enchanting waterfall. Your jaunt will be rewarded with views of box canyons and sandstone cliffs. Because it’s known for being a great area to watch winged visitors, make sure to sport hiking boots in case the trail becomes muddy!

Where: Less than 1½ hours from Ladue
Trail Difficulty: Moderate Bring Along: Binoculars for birdwatching, little ones Under 2 miles, this loop trail outside of Farmington can be done in under an hour, which makes it a popular hike. Named a National Natural Landmark in 1974, Pickle Springs Natural Area offers shallow caves, bluff overlooks, glimpses of wildlife and the real draw, seasonal waterfalls. Keep in mind, bridged creek crossings and steep uphill climbs make it a must to wear your hiking boots.

Year-Round Falls Grand Falls Riverside Drive, Joplin, Missouri, visitjoplinmo.com/grandfalls
Where: 4 to 5½ hours from Ladue Trail Difficulty: Easy Bring Along: Little ones and leashed dogs Promise, the Grand Falls are worth the trek across the state. Why? According to Visit Missouri’s website, it’s the largest continuously flowing natural waterfall in the state, plunging 12 feet over a 163-foot-wide ledge of dark rock and then crashing into jagged crags. Did we hear someone say “family photo”? Just make sure you stop off for a restroom break before reaching your destination, as no facilities are on-site.

Sprawled across 294 acres in this Illinois Nature Preserve, Olin Nature Preserve is home to an almost 2½-mile loop hike (the Olin Nature Preserve Beaver Trail) featuring creek crossings and steep climbs that lead to Beaver Falls. Limestone bluffs, hill prairies and small streams also dot this picturesque landscape.

Tween Wardrobe Trends By Alecia Humphreys

“Like a great pair of crop slacks, taffeta dresses – they’re things that can be dressed up and down,” Tussey says. “If your daughter is more of a tomboy or if she’s more into ruffles and frills, it will fit both girls; they can put their own spin on it.” The line, which will be available on rettajane. com, also includes favorites such as a smocked dress/jacket with matching cropped pants, a corduroy dress with a pleated skirt and a stunning
trench-style cape with a detachable belt. “I’m trying to give these girls timeless pieces that are cut well, that are quality-made and that will hopefully instill into them a little confidence to put their best foot forward,” Tussey says. “I hope to replicate that season after season. There really is a gap in this market, and I’m excited to fill it.”

etta Jane is more than a luxury line of timeless pieces for tweens. It’s also a statement to show tween girls that they matter. “The little girls that I would interview would say, ‘Nobody designs for me – they’re either designing for my little sister or they’re designing for my teenage cousin, but nobody is thinking of me,’” says Retta Tussey, founder of Retta Jane. “I just thought that was so interesting that these girls themselves were identifying with: Nobody thinks that we matter.” It’s an issue Tussey realized firsthand when shopping for her own stepdaughter. “We had a function for which she needed a very specific outfit for a church ceremony, and I told my husband, ‘I’ll go ahead and go out and get the kid’s clothes,’” Tussey recalls. “I went all day looking for something for my stepdaughter, and I came home just defeated because I found nothing. It was either too juvenile and had unicorns and glitter or was something not appropriate and too mature.” Tussey said she grappled with the gap in the market for months until her husband encouraged her to fill the void. Thus, the idea for Retta Jane was born. The brand will officially launch on Aug. 1. “Retta Jane are timeless pieces for a pivotal time in her life,” says Tussey, who named her business after the surname of herself, her mother and her grandmother. “These adolescent years are really hard years. You’re coming into your own, you’re starting to develop an identity of who you are, what you like, and clothing can have such a major impact on that.” Retta Jane’s clothing features evergreen pieces for girls sizes 8 to 16.

Custom Cabinetry By Alecia Humphreys

S
tone Hall Cabinetry doesn’t just create classic, handcrafted cabinets – it strives to create cabinets that are as custom as its clients themselves. “Your kitchen is like a reflection of your brand as a person,” says Rebekah Moore Murphy, co-founder and lead designer of Stone Hall Cabinetry. “A lot of couples love to entertain, and who you spend time with is more important than ever because COVID-19 limited us, first of all, to who was within our home. And now, as COVID-19 has improved, you’ve slowly opened your circle again, and we’ve yearned for visiting with people close to our hearts more than ever. So these spaces in our homes – and how they’re designed both functionally and aesthetically – are more important to people and families than I’ve ever seen it before.” That artful aesthetic and care for quality are precisely what inspired Stone Hall Cabinetry’s foundation. “I have such a passion for high-end design and how much cabinetry plays into the marriage of high-end design and homes,” Murphy says. “So often, I had clients come in with beautiful pictures from, like, New York or Paris, and they would want to execute a design. At the previous design firms I worked for, I often had to say, ‘No, the cabinets can’t do that. No, the cabinets can’t do that.’ And the cabinet lines were called custom, but they really weren’t. They were box lines that call themselves custom. When you’re told ‘no’ time and time again, it just hinders and sets limits on design.” That challenge is precisely why Murphy built her business on the platform of possibility. “Instead of saying, ‘No, we can’t do that,’ Stone Hall was founded on a possibility-[way-of]-thinking and high-end craftsmanship and marrying that to high-end design,” Murphy says. “Our artisans have been doing this for years and years and years. It’s not like they just started, but we formed a partnership.” It’s a partnership that Murphy does mention is noticeably niche. “We’re going to be for a small set of people who are very committed to looking for highly custom, the highest quality you can find in terms of how they’re made, how they were thought out in design
execution, the homeowner’s taste, as well as the home’s roots and how it fits in the space,” Murphy explains. “All of those things coming together, and being very fashion-forward, but also embracing historic architectural design roots. … It’s more than just buying cabinets – it’s an experience from start to finish. And then it’s something you live with for many, many years to come.”

n route to her daughter’s soccer game, Theresa Wangia is thinking about the one-of-a-kind jewelry she’ll design for Italy’s Milano Jewelry Week this fall and how those pieces might inspire a new collection from her St. Louis-based brand, Beltshazzar Jewels. For years, Wangia has drawn inspiration from her travels and multicultural heritage, including her grandmother’s ties to the Blackfoot Indian nation, and often incorporates leather, chunky chains and opulent stones in her jewelry and accessories. She says she’s thrilled to create unique pieces for this international showcase that’s paying homage to the elements of earth, water, air and fire – a theme that lends well to her nomadic style. “Beltshazzar” doesn’t have an exact translation. “I kind of derived it from the Book of Daniel [in the Bible], but I switched it up a little,” Wangia explains. To her, it means “there’s beauty in your journey.” Wangia is grateful her journey is leading her back to Milan, where her fashion career took root. She spent about six years in Europe in the late ’90s working as a model and stylist while crafting jewelry as a hobby. In London, she worked with a metalsmith at a boutique named Affinity, where she sorted stones and matched them to the owner’s liking. The apprenticeship allowed her to take part in the creative process, but it didn’t solidify her desire to become a full-time jewelry designer. Moving back to her hometown of St. Louis and becoming a mother to five children opened a new chapter in her life – one so different from her previous chapter that it led her to question whether it was all part of the same story. “I just started really missing my travels,” Wangia reflects. “I don’t know if ‘missing’ is a good word, but I was thinking about it in a way of ‘Did that actually happen?’ because my life was so different. I wanted to keep my travels close to my heart. I didn’t want to lose it.” About 10 years after returning to the U.S., she dug out the tools and trinkets she had collected while abroad and began designing again. “I decided I was going to travel through my work,” she explains, “and that’s how I started. It was a hobby while I was raising my kids.” Then, in 2011, she registered her business with the brand statement “Adornments For The Voyage.” Leatherwork and entrepreneurship run in the family, so Wangia first sold leather accessories before developing a store of mostly necklaces, bracelets and earrings. “My great-great-grandfather had a cobbler shop in Seneca, Missouri, and it was famous for making Buffalo Bill’s boots,” she says, referencing the 19th-century showman of the American West. This great-great-grandfather, Charles Frederick Luke, made about 1,000 pairs of shoes a year and also repaired footwear for Native Americans at his shop, C.F. Luke’s Lady’s & Gents Fine Boots & Shoes, which opened in 1875. Learning about Luke and his trade has motivated Wangia to expand the leather goods section of her own shop, which she hopes to do in the future with new machinery that would allow for a more efficient workflow. Currently, Wangia fashions all of Beltshazzar Jewels’ leather by hand. Beltshazzar Jewels has grown significantly since Wangia’s days of popping up at festivals across the Midwest and selling primarily from booths. Now, her jewelry and leather goods sell through her website and in shops worldwide; she’s corresponding with Fern Mallis, the former executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America credited as a pioneer of New York Fashion Week; and her designs are worn proudly by St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones. “If you liked the necklace I wore Tuesday night, I bought it from @beltshazzarjewels!” read Jones’ Instagram post from the campaign trail in spring 2021. Wangia describes her collaboration with the retailer Soft Surroundings, which began in February 2020, as her greatest accomplishment to date. Soft Surroundings now sells her jewelry in its stores all over the U.S. In the metro area, shoppers may also find her jewelry and accessories at Byrd Designer Consignment, The Hill Antique Market, Urban Matter and The Vault Luxury Resale. GATHERINGS & GOODWILL FRIENDS OF ST. LUKE’S HOSPITAL
ART OF HEALTH GALA Photos and story by Jon Gitchoff
S
pring came alive with the creative, colorful Art of Health Gala benefiting St. Luke’s Hospital at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis in Clayton on March 12. The Friends of St. Luke’s Hospital presented gala guests with an evening of artinspired cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and dinner; opportunities to explore their own artistic sides at a graffiti corner; a performance by Oz the Mentalist; and other activities – all while they donned their own inspired, vibrant cocktail attire. St. Luke’s, which has been serving the metro area for more than 150 years, raised $500,000 at the event, and that money will go toward the hospital’s heart and vascular care, oncology services and other operating expenses. Visit LADUENEWS.COM to see more fabulous photos from this event!

The timing of our Friends of St. Luke’s Art of Health Gala is impeccable as we emerge from the pandemic and celebrate how exceptionally well St. Luke’s rose to the challenge of these past two years. Hospitals are always about people – the patients we serve and the healers who heal. Philanthropy and support from our community also play a crucial role in keeping us at the forefront of award-winning health care. This gala is a much-anticipated opportunity to recognize and applaud all who give to and trust in us.

Hosting the gala were Rebecca and Alan Braverman, with St. Louis-based party band Groovethang providing live music. During the event, the foundation presented cardiac surgeon Nicholas Kouchoukos with its 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award. Visit LADUENEWS.COM to see more fabulous photos from this event!

This is a special year for Heartworks as we are returning to an in-person event after two years of virtual celebrations. It is even more special because of our honoree, Dr. Nicholas Kouchoukos. His innovation, dedication and expertise in the field of cardiothoracic surgery have had a significant impact in the treatment and lives of people with Marfan syndrome and other genetic aortic conditions. Dr. Kouchoukos has been an international thought leader in aortic surgery whose work has educated the next generation of aortic surgeons. Countless lives have benefited from his expertise.

TANGO Argentina Food T By Mabel Suen
ANGO Argentina Food, the metro area’s oldest purveyor of traditional Argentinian empanadas, opened its first dine-in storefront, in St. Charles, last September. Previously, beyond being a fixture on the local festival circuit for decades, TANGO operated as a smaller carryout-only location at 2012 Campus Drive, also in St. Charles, from 2016 to the end of last July. The restaurant comes from husband-and-wife duo Hector and Stella Aberastury. The Buenos Aires, Argentina, natives established TANGO in 2000 when they began selling their flaky empanadas de carne – an empanada with ground beef, green and red peppers, onion, olive and Argentinian spices – at local festivals. Over the years, from a booth proudly outfitted with the blue-and-white colors of the Argentinian flag, Hector Aberastury became known as the “Empanada Man,” selling savory hand pies fried to perfection. The couple gradually introduced new filling options at their stand, such as a creamy

empanada de espinaca with spinach, egg, white sauce and Swiss, mozzarella, Parmesan and Romano cheeses. “Over the past couple of years, we’ve missed seeing people at events,” Stella Aberastury says. “It’s great to have a place for them to come in and have our empanadas now. We love being able to show them the food of our country and offer them a unique Argentinian experience.” TANGO’s roughly 1,500 square feet can seat about 50 guests. From the menu, customers can choose from 14 fried-to-order empanadas created with imported ingredients according to traditional family recipes, each shaped differently to indicate the filling. According to Stella Aberastury, the pastries get their distinct flavor from a blend of spices that includes Argentinian oregano, parsley and pimentón (Spanish smoked paprika). A popular option is the spicy empanada de pollo (chicken and onion with green, red and
yellow peppers), while a newer offering is the empanada de queso y pancetta (provolone, mozzarella and bacon). Behind the counter, individually packaged treats such as alfajores (sandwich cookies) are available, as well as jars of dulce de leche spread and chimichurri.

n January, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra announced the hire of Yolanda “Yoli” Alovor, Ph.D., as the institution’s first vice president of external affairs and equity, diversity and inclusion. The newly created executive-level position oversees the SLSO’s ongoing work toward equity, diversity and inclusion and will engage key partners and stakeholders locally and beyond to support these efforts. The new hire puts the organization in a dynamic new position to strengthen its approach to fostering a more inclusive environment now and moving forward. “SLSO has a long history of community connections and establishing access to our music in the community,” says Alovor of the institution, which was founded in 1880 and is considered a leading American orchestra. “I joined the team to help provide an intentional and systemic framework for continuing these efforts and cultivating organizational transformation.” Alovor is uniquely qualified to step into this role. She holds a doctorate in educational research from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and recently completed postdoctoral training at the University of California, Berkeley’s Robertson Center for Intercultural Leadership and Programs: Global DEI Practitioner Institute. In addition, Alovor has more than 10 years of experience in behavioral science and research in

human connectivity, both of which she relies upon to reimagine how SLSO creates a sense of belonging through access, programming and partnerships. She will also direct the SLSO external affairs and communications departments to ensure they’re aligned with the EDI framework. In effect, these efforts will elevate SLSO’s profile not only locally but also nationally and internationally. “Coupling EDI with external affairs is essential to align strategic goals with the stakeholders we represent internally and externally,” Alovor says. The hire serves as a full-circle moment for Alovor. A St. Louis native and graduate of Webster Groves High School, she credits her parents as the foundation that helped establish within her the importance of creating community through arts and music. “In my father’s line of work, we traveled to the city of St. Louis and the rural areas, where I engaged with people from all walks of life,” Alovor explains. “This sparked my interest in human behavior and education and helped shape my EDI philosophy.” SLSO also announced in January a new composer workshop designed to nurture and advance the careers of rising young composers. The inaugural workshop took place Jan. 27 to 30 and concluded with a free community concert. When coupled with Alovor’s recent hire, the workshop makes it clear the institution is
prioritizing inclusive initiatives. “The SLSO serves as an innovator in the symphonic efforts of EDI,” Alovor says. “By creating my appointment, SLSO demonstrates our commitment to an appreciation for cognitive diversity and a fundamentally different way of leading in a very traditional environment. There are only three appointments specifically aimed at EDI in the [New York-based] League of [American] Orchestras, and this position will provide strategic guidance to elevate the institution’s profile locally, nationally and globally.”

F
armers and avid gardeners know the truth: Not all potatoes, carrots, tomatoes and other vegetables come out of the ground or off the plant looking grocery-store perfect. In fact, the beautiful specimens we’re used to seeing in supermarket produce sections are (no pun intended) the cream of the crop in terms of appearance, while their equally nutritious but misshapen or oddly colored counterparts may get shunted aside by large manufacturers seeking conformity and customer satisfaction. Visit any of the greater metro area’s farmers markets this year, and you’ll find examples of seasonal produce that exhibits a wide array of sizes, shapes and colors. Some of these disparate – and even slightly entertaining – fruits and veggies are heirloom varieties that fell from favor in part due to their unusual and inconsistent appearance. But give them a try, and you’ll find they are often
flavorful and healthy additions to your table. In fact, as more people have discovered the value and flavor of “ugly produce” in recent years, companies have sprung up to capitalize on that discovery. For example, San Francisco-based Imperfect Foods and New Jersey-based Misfits Market are national companies that offer a boxed subscription service to metro area customers. These companies and others like them purchase surplus produce – the items that don’t make the supermarket beauty cut – from farmers and send them to subscribers, often at a discount over supermarket prices. Locally, some retailers also are embracing the ugly produce trend. Local Harvest Grocery, located at 3108 Morgan Ford Road in St. Louis, states: “We try to limit food waste when and where we can. We sell ugly, blemished or otherwise imperfect produce at discount as ‘inglorious,’ following [French supermarket
chain] Intermarché’s example. We donate excess inventory to area food banks. Products that cannot be sold or donated are ultimately composted when possible, not trashed.” The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that about 31 percent of the nation’s food supply goes uneaten and that the equivalent of about a pound of food per person is wasted each day in America. This waste means that resources such as water, land and fertilizer used to grow food crops are applied to items that ultimately rot, so some people concerned with environmental issues also favor purchasing ugly produce to help reduce negative environmental effects. Whether you purchase ugly produce or not, controlling food waste by buying only what your household will actually consume, freezing leftover portions that may otherwise go to waste and composting scraps are additional ways to help your pocketbook and the planet.

A Grand Finale By Bryan A. Hollerbach | Images courtesy of St. Louis County Library
St. Louis County Library caps a decade-long systemwide upgrade by erecting a new administrative building in Frontenac and a new HQ in Ladue.
T
he final pages are now turning on St. Louis County Library’s decade-long überambitious Your Library Renewed capital improvement campaign. Initiated by a 2012 voter-approved tax increase to fund new facilities, upgrade extant ones and enhance programs and services, that campaign is culminating with the opening this year of the Lynn Beckwith Jr. Administrative Building and the continuing construction into next year of the replacement library headquarters. The Beckwith building, into which support staffers are scheduled to move this month, occupies 1412 S. Spoede Road in Frontenac. With a projected completion date of late 2023, the new HQ will rise at 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd. in Ladue, the site of the old HQ, which will close May 28 at 5 p.m. Slightly less than a mile – cumulatively on Lindbergh, Clayton Road and Spoede – will separate the administrative building and the new HQ. The capital campaign effectively commenced from 2014 to 2016 with Phase 1, which involved work on 11 branch libraries. Phase 2-A, from 2016 to 2019, involved work on three more branches, and Phase

2-B, from 2018 to 2019, involved four. Phase 3 comprises the two final structures. The system’s Ladue HQ opened in 1959. The building underwent renovations in 1968 and again in 1988. Kristen Sorth, SLCL’s director and CEO, reflects: “Libraries have changed since this building was built,” a system press release quotes her as saying. “We are a center of the community. It’s hard to do that in a building where you came in, checked out a book, someone shushed you and you left. This new branch will be completely dedicated to patrons. It will be a more modern, spacious building that clearly celebrates the different patrons who use it.” Groundbreaking on the new HQ will take place this summer. Barring weather woes and other unforeseen complications – stray global pandemics, say – the new library is projected to be completed late next year. According to the system press release, the new two-story HQ will contain 74,000 square feet and will feature high windows, an outdoor courtyard and walking trail, a second-floor reading deck and a small-business center. Its upstairs also will house colorful spaces for children and teens and a genealogy center. Other, specific amenities at the new library will include: A high-tech creative space for teens with a 3D printer, a
recording studio and a green screen for videos. The Stephany and Richard Kniep Children’s Space, featuring a large playhouse and other interactive learning activities for younger users. A first-floor 800-seat space for author events, programs, meetings and other activity. A whopping 19 private study rooms, a quiet reading room, a computer lab, community meeting rooms and comfortable seating. Lamar Johnson Collaborative, which has headquarters in Chicago but also maintains offices in Overland and other locales, designed the system’s new Ladue HQ with a budget of $22 million. As Ladue News previously reported, even beyond the capital campaign, SLCL has scarcely been resting on its laurels. For example, ongoing innovations at the system – drivethru services related to wellness, safety and sustainability – earned it one of the Washington, D.C.-based Urban Libraries Council’s 10 Top Innovators awards in December 2020.
