Do the Math

For nearly 20 years, Dave Cole has coached elementary school math teams. He’s instructed children in the Parkway and Ladue School Districts, as well as taught math at the Gifted Resource Council. And for six years, Cole oversaw elementary math camps with his son.

“I’ve always enjoyed working with the kids and getting that ‘Ah ha’ moment where a math concept hits home,” Cole describes.

These experiences inspired Cole to develop children’s novels in a series called “The Math Kids.”

In October, Cole published the seventh entry in his book series, titled “A Knotty Problem.” Book eight, “An Artificial Test,” is set to publish April 2023.

The local author first began developing his book series during the camps he ran. Cole used stories to illustrate math concepts and develop math puzzles, both of which the campers seemed to enjoy.

Inspired, Cole decided to document those stories so that he could use them again.

“By the time I finished, I had written ‘The Prime-Time Burglars,’ my first Math Kids’ story,” he says of the book released in 2018. “I enjoyed writing it so much that I wrote two additional books. It was only then that I reached out to publishers.”

“The Math Kids” series follows a group of kids who form a club based on their shared interest in the subject, and it mixes elements of Cole’s favorite two book series as a kid: “The Hardy Boys” and “Encyclopedia Brown.”

Each entry focuses on a central math theme. For example, “The Prime-Time Burglars” deals with prime numbers. In “A Knotty Problem,” published by Common Deer Press, Cole says there’s “some interesting math around knots.”

“I took this theme and worked in a story of a conflict between Stephanie’s soccer tournament and the district math competition,” he continues. “I think the story is important because we’re often

faced with making choices, which can impact our friends or family. Not all problems are mathrelated, but sometimes we can use the same logical approach to find a solution.”

Cole admits that he never anticipated the series to take off when he first started writing. The goal was to tell stories that kids enjoy, with a little bit of education in the background. Kids and parents alike love the books, he says, not only because they’re entertaining but also because they help youngsters rethink what math is all about.

“Math is all around us – in nature, art, music and [in] these amazing patterns,” Cole says. “We don’t have to understand the complex equations to enjoy the results. If a kid says, ‘Who knew math was so cool?’, then I got the result I wanted.” ln

Substance Abuse Prevention

More than half of Clayton middle schoolers say that getting alcohol is easy, according to the 2020 Missouri Student Survey. At the high school, 73 percent of respondents said getting alcohol is easy. The survey also found that 1 in 5 Clayton high schoolers used electronic cigarettes recently, and 1 in 5 middle schoolers said their peers would be impressed by someone their age using e-cigarettes or similar devices.

All in Clayton Coalition works to educate and empower families to prevent youth substance abuse. Its leaders say this mission is vital and can have a lasting impact for years to come.

“The No. 1 thing parents can do to prevent their child from engaging in substance use is to talk to them about it,” says Lili Schliesser, All in Clayton Coalition project coordinator. “Start early in elementary school, and have the conversation often as the child grows. Be clear about household rules and consequences for substance use. Talk about the risks.”

In 2019, All in Clayton was awarded a federal, five-year grant through Drug-Free Communities in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to the coalition’s website. The School District of Clayton serves as the fiscal agent for the grant, while the coalition operates on the support of volunteers. Schliesser is the coalition’s sole employee.

All in Clayton Coalition educates residents on central issues related to substance use through efforts such as school presentations and contests that encourage kids to design infographics about substance use. “We educate students and the community about the harms of particular substances,” Schliesser adds. “We train parents and staff to help youth develop the skills and protective factors to live healthy, drug-free lives.”

The coalition also examines policies and laws that hold adults and youth accountable and make it harder for young people to access substances.

Additionally, it works with law enforcement and retailers to reduce underage access.

“All In has coalitions at Wydown Middle School and Clayton High School, where students can learn how to do prevention in their own schools,” Schliesser notes. “They know their peers and their environments, so they can make a big impact on the community.”

The impact reaches far beyond the halls of Clayton schools. Schliesser says that most

adults with a substance-use disorder began experimenting with alcohol, tobacco or cannabis as teenagers. All in Clayton is counting on early education to stave off future problems.

“Helping teens delay the onset of the use of these substances will help them to avoid problems later in life,” Schliesser says. “Our work helps to ensure youth grow up to reach their potential and live healthy, productive lives. Substanceuse prevention impacts individuals, but it also impacts families and communities.”

Coalition meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month from 4 to 5 p.m., and Schliesser welcomes members of the community to join. A mailing list, offered at allincoalition.com/ volunteer-with-us, provides information via email on meetings, events and volunteer opportunities. ln

Reasons to Smile

BOCA Studio in Ladue is giving St. Louisans all the more reason to smile with a line of new beauty products to complement the services provided by orthodontist Dr. Erin Fraundorf.

“With BOCA orthodontic and whitening studio, I wanted the office to cater to the entire experience,” Fraundorf says. “Most products are based on not just looking at the patient’s teeth, but looking at the whole body.”

Fraundorf takes into consideration how one feels after sitting in the dentist’s chair and has found a way to extend her care beyond patients’ appointment window.

“Your cheeks get stretched out when you go to the dentist, which can be uncomfortable, and then your lips will need a little love,” she says. “BOCA Lip Love is like a lip balm. It’s a very smooth product.”

BOCA’s lip exfoliant features all organic ingredients, which, Fraundorf teases, makes the beauty remedy edible. With all BOCA products, she takes a holistic approach.

“When I went into dentistry, [I noticed] everything used is disposable,” the orthodontist says. “There are reusable options for some things, but we never want to compromise patient care, and everything must be sterilized. I wanted to embrace sustainability as much as possible without compromising patient care.”

To that end, most items found inside the ultra-white studio space are reusable and made of either glass or stainless steel, including the lip exfoliant, which is housed in a travel-sized glass jar. BOCA Studio also carries OJOOK, the ecofriendly line of oral care products, with which the BOCA bamboo toothbrush pairs well.

“Plastic is unavoidable, like in our whitening pens,” Fraundorf adds. “I try to be conscious as much as possible and try to be intentional with every decision I make when choosing products.”

She notes that BOCA’s whitening pens are ideal for on-the-go touch-ups to one’s smile. “I love red wine, but I don’t love what happens to your teeth [when you drink it],” Fraundorf says.

“Let’s face it: None of us are going to stop drinking our coffee or red wine. [The whitening pen is] a little glow-up as you go!”

For patients who wear an Invisalign clear tray, which is offered at BOCA Studio, the BOCA

Aligner Refresh can be a game-changer. Fraundorf calls it a tool that multi-tasks. With one squirt, the refresher neutralizes tray odor and provides a gentle whitening agent to enhance those pearly whites.

“When transforming a smile, so much more than the exterior changes,” Fraundorf adds. “There’s confidence-building. My patients sit upright more – have more pride in their smile. The experience is amazing. I really respect the internal connection with the smile.”

Holiday Glow

Candles on the dinner table cast a warm glow on holiday meals and are part of many family traditions. When celebrating any occasion using candles, be sure to practice some basic safety steps.

The first rule is never leave burning candles unattended. I learned this lesson for the second time on Thanksgiving of 2016, when we went to the dinner table with candles still lit on the living room coffee table. Just as we were beginning to carve the bird, the smoke detectors went off as one candle had melted sideways onto the surface of the table and started to burn through the tabletop. I should have known better after learning this lesson the first time when my brother’s handmade centerpiece of pinecones around a candle on a paper plate did the same thing on mother’s best linen cloth on Christmas of 1965. To prevent accidental fires in your home, please follow some basic safety tips:

Before the holiday 

Check your smoke detector batteries.  Refresh your fire extinguishers. They expire after a few years. New ones are cheaper than a house fire.  Review fire-safety plans with family members, especially younger children.  Store matches out of reach of small hands.

 Inspect your chimney flue, as candles are not the only source of fire ignition.  Check extension cords and string lights for wear or fraying. Replace surge protectors every couple of years, as they do wear out.

For your celebrations

 Use very fresh greenery for decorating. Hydrate foliage in the bathtub before arranging, and replace dried materials as needed.

 Keep open flames at least a foot away from flammable decorations.

 Consider using battery-operated candles or mini light strings for tables and mantelpieces.

Extra tips for candle safety

Purchase quality candles made with premium materials that burn safely and evenly. Look for the word “dripless” on the packaging. Inexpensive candles, made with cheaper materials and less quality control, often suffer from more frequent meltdowns or flare-ups.

 Where possible, place candles inside glass holders. Hurricane globes, floral cylinders, votive cups or glass jars all make attractive containers.

 Use nonflammable fillers inside the glass, such as floral marbles, polished rocks, colored aquarium gravel or a layer of Epsom salt.

 Try floating candles on water in a punch bowl or floral cylinder.

 Never place candles in a drafty location. Strong airflow can cause candles to burn unevenly.

 When using traditional candelabras, add candle followers, which are little metal caps that go on the top of a candle to help it burn more evenly, and bobeches, which are small glass or metal plates that go at the base of the candle to catch drips and prevent melted wax from spilling.

 Use a candle snuffer to extinguish flames rather than blowing them out to prevent hot wax splatter.

Flickering candlelight adds ambience, joy and holiday spirit to any home. Use them carefully, and celebrate your traditions safely. Happy holidays! ln

Girls in the Know’s thoughtful, unique approach to talking about empowerment, body image, safety and puberty makes our program a must-attend for every single preteen girl. Giving girls this information in the ways that we do gives them an added boost of self-confidence because being a preteen is already hard enough.

12OH7 HERBAN EATERY

The Delmar Loop has a new destination for plant-based cuisine: 12oh7 Herban Eatery.

“From our soil to your soul, we try to encapsulate nostalgic and trending foods and recreate them into plant-based eats,” coowner Brandy Dixon says. “We are a minimally processed, from-scratch kitchen.”

Dixon co-owns and -operates the restaurant with chef and fellow St. Louis native Jasmine Yandell, who has cooked professionally for more than 15 years.

12oh7 got its start – and subsequently, its name – on Dec. 7, 2015, but it didn’t originate as a plant-based restaurant. In fact, 12oh7 once offered smoked and cured meats. It wasn’t long, however, before the duo decided to make the company match their plant-based lifestyles.

Over the years, the brand’s many forms have included pop-up dinners, meal prep, vending at markets and festivals and catering. Right before the pandemic hit, Yandell and Dixon began

offering curbside pickup. Cars lined up for blocks to pick up food, and at that point, it became even clearer that it was time to come up with a larger, more centralized location.

The Delmar Loop storefront, which was previously occupied by Chinese Noodle Cafe, seemed like the perfect fit, with plenty of room for 12oh7 to grow. Although it does have a few seats for dining in, the interior was set up primarily for casual grab-and-go service. A minimalist blackand-white color scheme, pops of yellow and plenty of plants make up the modern design.

From the menu, choose from highlights such as Loaded Notchos topped with refried beans, charred jalapeño, pico de gallo and plant-based cheese and chorizo. Mainstays include plantbased takes on a cheeseburger, fish sandwich and chicken sandwich – and each come complete with all the fix-ins.

“All of our items are special and made with love,” Yandell says. “Our food still has culture. We still make it taste like grandma brought it right off the stove. Each sandwich is pretty intricate. We start with making the actual ‘meat,’ and we

end with making all of our own signature sauces. That always seals the deal.”

In addition to housemade sandwiches, 12oh7 also offers specials from time to time, including soul food plates and “cheatboxes.” For something sweet, choose from a variety of shakes made with a cashew base.

“Our shakes are amazing; our customers are always suspicious, thinking that our shakes have dairy in them,” Dixon says. “We just laugh it off. We have so many flavors, from strawberry to Oreo and even sesame.”

“We’re excited to continue to provide our customers with amazing food and a great experience here at 12oh7,” the duo states. ln

Cozy up with a pair of books celebrating imagination and friendship by two author/illustrators: “Explorers of the Wild” by Cale Atkinson, and “The Bear Went Over the Mountain” by Jane Cabrera.

Atkinson features a side-by-side depiction of two adventurers on each two-page spread: a boy whose story is shown on the left page and a bear seen similarly engaged on the right page. These excited explorers revel in discoveries as they walk through the woods. Both enthusiastic investigators seem fearless as they tramp through the environment and discover lush life all around. Even in the darkest depths of the forest, with glowing yellow eyes peering from burrows and tree limbs, the travelers move boldly on until a chance meeting brings the startled duo together.

The story is simply told with sparse text but is brought to life through engrossing, detailed

pictures. The artist uses a wide range of colors, tones and patterns to create visual depth and texture and fills the pages with tiny hidden animals and insects just waiting to be found. This is a book that will delight readers time after time.

A wonderful companion book, Jane Cabrera’s “The Bear Went Over the Mountain” is based on a children’s song. Cabrera’s illustrated version of the traditional tune extends the action to include animal friends traversing the mountain in a game of hide and seek. Taking turns hopping, dancing, running and swooping over the mountain in search of one another, the animals celebrate each time another friend joins the pack.

This joyful read-aloud with its repeating lyrics gives even the youngest children a chance to read and sing along. The consistent rhyme scheme provides a payoff on each page as kids’ ears are rewarded with the anticipated and satisfying assonance. Cabrera’s sweet and softly toned illustrations are inviting, and children will delight at an ending that might remind them of home. ln

Deck the Performance Halls

An abundance of holiday entertainment gifts await local audiences through the end of the year.

The Fabulous Fox Theatre has several holiday shows on tap. Concerts include Straight No Chaser on Dec. 8 and Christmas with Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith on Dec. 9. The Fox also welcomes “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical” on Dec. 11, Garrison Keillor’s “Prairie Home Companion Christmas Show” on Dec. 15, “Cirque Dreams Holidaze” on Dec. 16 and 17, and “ELF The Musical” Dec. 20 through 24.

On Dec. 18, the renamed “Nutcracker! Magic of Christmas Ballet,” formerly known as “Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker,” arrives and proclaims solidarity with Ukraine, according to a press release. The cast features international talent, including ballet dancers from Ukraine.

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis offers its second annual production of Michael Wilson’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic story of redemption, “A Christmas Carol,” through Dec. 30. The Rep’s return of its dazzling 2021 production is again directed by Rep artistic director Hana S. Sharif and choreographed by Kirven DouthitBoyd, artistic director at The Big Muddy Dance Company.

Westport Playhouse provides a holiday singalong of “Annie” on Nov. 26, as well as one for “White Christmas” on Dec. 6 and 20 – “evenings of high-energy, sing-along shows on the big screen with a lively host and plenty of interactive fun.” Jennifer Theby Quinn, a St. Louis Theater Circle Award-winner, stars in “The Twelve Dates of Christmas” as

Mary, a young woman who finds herself dumped on Thanksgiving, living the single life in New York City, and coping as best she can on several dating escapades.

St. Louis Actors’ Studio will present the world premiere of “Forget Me Knot” Dec. 2 through 18. Renowned illusionist Kyle Marlett stars in this show about a “race against the clock by one human being as he attempts to leave his mark on this Earth before time runs out.”

COCA has re-imagined its holiday tradition, “The Little Dancer,” as “The Little Dancer: Moments in Time,” a full-length classical ballet performed by members of Ballet Eclectica Dec. 8 through 11 at COCA’s Berges Theatre. The new production has been conceptualized using stories from COCA’s young artists, under the creative direction of choreographer Kevin Jenkins.

West End Players Guild presents Lucas Hnath’s drama, “The Christians,” Dec. 2 through 11. Hnath’s story concerns the reactions among the faithful when the leader of an evangelical megachurch reveals that he has doubts about a core belief of Christian doctrine.

Rapper Smino, who is from St. Louis, will bring his new album, “Luv 4 Rent,” to his hometown in a performance at Stifel Theatre on Dec. 18 for his fifth annual “Kribmas” benefit concert in partnership with Spotify. The yearly holiday event “brings culture, experience and opportunity to the city that has uplifted Smino throughout his journey,” according to a news release.

There’s plenty to see and hear to satisfy your holiday cravings this season. Let the celebrations begin! ln
