Peas Pods Peas! Besides being one of my favorite veggies, I love their look! They are tiny, colorful, and absolutely yummy! When I was young I used to eat them raw, mum bought them, pealed them and straight to my mouth they go! And having mentioned my mum and peas, I have to confess that in my mind I see myself a pea sheltered in my mum’s pod, exactly like I was in her tummy… Mum is everything a pod offers to peas… She offers security and serenity, shelter and safety, and above all support and endless love… She is my safety haven that protects me, my serenity area where I can always be heard and understood, and my support shelter that holds me and tells me, “You can… Don’t give up.” Her love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible… Mum, you are the binder that holds peas together; if one falls the rest will follow, but knowing you are there makes everyone around you strong and loved. I wouldn’t change a single thing in my life cause I know you are there… By far, the best thing in it… You are my safety pod and my role model in life, love, faith, religion and beyond… I am blessed that we are “two peas in a pod.” I love you

1. Which products do you recommend for body firming and cellulite reduction? Eating a healthy, low-fat diet is the first step in fighting jiggles and other unflattering skin problems. Eat lots of fruits and veggies and avoid high-saturated fatty foods and processed foods and drinks (including diet soda). Limit cigarette consumption and drink lots of water (add lemon to help reduce bloat). In addition to eating well, try exercising a bit more too. Just three 30-minute cardio sessions a week could significantly improve your health and your waistline. Use: Olay Body Firming Reviver Body Lotion, Clarins Toning Body Balm, Or Dior Dior Svelte Body Contouring and Firming Concentrate. 2. My hair is tangled after I take a shower, any advice for helping me with this problem? Take a wide-tooth comb and detangle your hair under the shower head. For additional detangling, apply hair conditioner and detangle under the shower head. Detangling under the shower head is probably the most effective of all tangled hair solutions. Use: The Body Shop Rainforest Radiance Hair Butter, L’Oreal Eversleek Smoothing Deep Conditioner, or L’Oreal Elvive Detangling Conditioner Nutri-Gloss Light. Or take some hair serum or leave-in treatment and apply it to your damp hair after shower. Then gently detangle with a wide-tooth comb section by section. Always remove tangles section by section. If you tangle your hair while combing or brushing, don’t yank the comb or brush from your hair. Instead, carefully remove each individual hair strand by strand from the tool. Don’t try to reverse the direction of the comb or brush. This typically just causes more tangles. Use: Dove Nourishing Oil Care Detangler, Kerastase Elixir Ultime, L’Oreal Professionnel Paris Liss Ultime Reflexium Serum, or L’Oreal Professionnel Lumino Contrast Serum Gloss.

Mums You Can Do It! The Contoured Face Natural Contouring Face Chart
BY: Jolanda Bakker Makeup Artist
It’s surprisingly easy to master this look. Just follow the insider advice from makeup artist Jolanda Bakker! Sculpted cheekbones are back! But this time around, they’re much more subtle! And as a modern mum you will have to try this! Why I love this LOOK? 1. It allows you to play da Vinci with your face shapes If you aren’t born with the golden ration (a calculation Renaissance artist used to create classic proportions), you can fake it. Measure from our hairline to the tip of the chin, then from ear to ear. Ideally your face is 1.6 times as long as it is wide. Not quite there? Follow the contouring tips! 2. It brings out your inner Coco Rocha You know those hot Instagram photos you take with your girlfriends, the ones where you’re sucking your cheeks in and pretending to blow kisses at the camera? This gives you the same effect; without the shameless vogue-ing.

before after READY TO SHAPE UP? Here’s a little refresher: Dark shades bring objects to the back, while lighter ones bring objects forward -aha cheekbones! Just remember to keep it subdued . Use a contour powder that’s one or two hues darker then your foundation and blend it in thoroughly with a nice fluffy brush. The only thing worse than a visible panty line is a visible contour line.
1) PREP Dab a lighter concealer onto the parts of the face where you want to highlight. When you put the foundation on top these areas look a little lighter. To accentuate the bone structure apply product in a triangle shape under the eyes, blending down along the edges of the nose and out to the corner of the eyes. 2) CONTOUR After applying foundation, suck in your cheeks like a fish. Using a matte bronzer or contouring powder gently sweep the colour into the hollows of your cheekbones, blending well. Now use the same shade on any other part of your face that you want to minimize; under your chin or on the sides of your nose. 3) HIGHLIGHT Dust an iridescent powder over the parts of your face where the light would naturally hit, such as cheekbones, the bridge of the nose and the brow bones. Choose an icy shade if you are fair and a more golden tone if your skin is warmer. Avoid sparkle near your wrinkles and make sure the particles are tiny. You don’t want to look like you have been hit by a disco ball. MY SECRET TRICK During the day, when the glare of fluorescent lights can make even the most gentle shading look like a bad makeup ad from the 80’s, I find it simpler to use light creamy shades instead of dark powders. Sweep a bit on top of the cheekbones, brow bones and voila instant bone structure!
REMEMBER Marlene Dietrich: The German born actress had a fling for top hats, tails and cheekbones so sharp you could bread with them. Marilyn Monroe: Rumour has it that the 50s pinup didn’t roll out of bed with perfect bone structure, rather she learned how to use contouring to minimize her nose and slim jaw line!

Hossam Taher
Co-Founder of CairoSitters BY: FARAH ASFOUR
Who’s the founder of CairoSitters? CairoSitters was founded by three co-founders; me, Omar Fayez and Hussein Yehia. My name is Hossam Taher, I’m 22 years old and I’m in the 4th year in Cairo University School of Medicine. Omar is 21 years old and he’s studying Economics at University of Munich. Hussein is 20 years old and he’s studying Investment and Financial Risk Management at Cass Business School in London. How was CairoSitters born? One day in summer 2011, Omar, Hussein and I were walking in El Gezira Club and we saw kids having fun in the playing area and they were looked after by their nonEgyptian nannies. A nanny being always with the child can negatively affect him/her in many ways like ruining his/her language and spoiling him/her. It was an unacceptable scene and we thought that if they were our kids, we would never leave them in the hands of a nanny, but with our girlfriends instead. So we thought of something: what if there were people qualified enough, not only to watch over the kids, but to actually benefit them? In addition, after doing a lot of research, we realized that there is a great demand for professional caregivers and tutors as well as for educated babysitters. That was how we got the idea, and CairoSitters was founded as the first babysitting and tutoring agency in Cairo. 44 |
| March 2013
What services does CairoSitters provide? CairoSitters provides four services: babysitting, tutoring, ushering events and kids corners, and extracurricular activities for the kids. Our services are provided in Arabic, English, French and German. The babysitting and tutoring services give parents the opportunity of being able to leave their kids in safe hands. Not only do caregivers take care of the kids but they also help them improve their language skills and assist them in studying. Our edge here is that our caregivers come from similar educational and social background as the children and their parents. Also an important part of our services is the event ushering and kids corner where our caregivers take care of the kids and play with them during events like birthday parties, school carnivals, etc. As for the extracurricular activities, suppose your kid wants to play tennis or dance hip hop, a caregiver who plays tennis or dances hip hop can do that with your kid to have fun and help him/her improve their performance too. How were you able to succeed in starting a business at a young age? I have to say that it wouldn’t have been the same without SPARK! It’s an entrepreneurship camp that I attended with Omar in Summer 2009 in El Gouna. The camp is designed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to promote entrepreneurship in Egypt through an environment of life skills, leadership and character development. The camp made us think of starting a business and we began to look for opportunities and problems to be solved. What are the ages of the kids you deal with and of the caregivers? And how many caregivers does CairoSitters have? We deal with kids between the ages of 2-12 years old. We accept caregivers starting from the age of 18 with a special focus on university students. Currently CairoSitters employs 120 caregivers all over Cairo. How did you promote CairoSitters at the very beginning? We made a facebook fanpage and we posted applications to start recruitment. In 2 days, we recruited 30 girls. We
created a logo and we printed flyers and high-quality booklets including the girls’ CVs. The girls who got employed then distributed our flyers and booklets in El Gezira Club and as a result of this, mothers started to call and ask for our services. Facebook, word of mouth and the high-quality and professionalism of our booklet helped us tremendously, besides the fact that we provided a service that mothers desperately needed. What’s the procedure parents go through in order to start using CairoSitters’ services? Mothers complete a detailed request for what they need then we schedule an interview between the mother, the caregiver and a representative of CairoSitters to make sure of the quality of the home environment where our caregiver will be working. Caring for other people’s children is a huge responsibility, how do you prepare your caregivers for that? Recruiting the right persons for the job is a priority to us. We also make sure that applicants want the job not only for money but also because they really love children and they enjoy dealing with them. Moreover, our child psychologist -with the help of pediatricians- developed a curriculum that is taught to CairoSitters’ caregivers in trainings, and they are given exams based on the curriculum’s
one day will cause lifting the region out of the poverty and problems we are currently facing. Are you presenting anything new soon? Next summer there will be CairoSitters summer school in a villa by the sea in Marina. There will be fun activities for the kids from 10am - 6pm, then a babysitting service from 10pm - 2am. The caregivers will be highly educated and certified Americans, Germans and French. Another piece of news is that we’ll expand outside Egypt: in Beirut;tt very soon there will be BeirutSitters. In the future after you graduate, you’ll only continue the path of medicine or you can also be an entrepreneur doing more projects? Medicine is my number one priority and the career I chose for myself. I consider entrepreneurial projects as my exciting hobby; I get to implement and apply my ideas and dreams right away and see them get formed and become real. I think entrepreneurship is a lifestyle not a job; it’s a way of living, how you view things, how you recognize opportunities and how to solve problems effectively, as well as being creative and innovative. I see myself working as a doctor dedicated to my patients but at the same time introducing many new entrepreneurial projects to the scene. Once an entrepreneur, it’s hard to stop, very addictive!
“Nothing is done in CairoSitters without research. When you “
research, you don’t go wrong. Hossam Taher
material after the trainings. I have to mention here that the curriculum was produced thanks to the Business Plan Competition in AUC, since the curriculum was made to be given to the investors. CairoSitters’ curriculum covers different topics such as babysitting, kids’ routines, kids’ nutrition, fun activities, dealing with emergencies, how to teach kids, how to solve conflicts among children, etc. So you can say that training is the backbone of CairoSitters. What’s your mission in CairoSitters? When I started CairoSitters one of my goals was to succeed in introducing the culture of part time jobs among students in the MENA region and prepare girls to be successful future mothers. With time I realized that influencing the younger generations at this critical age by planting the basics of analytical and creative thinking in their minds has a great impact on their future lives which will consequently create future leaders stimulating the region (Egypt, primarily) to rise bright. By reaching this great level of impact in the region, we aspire to positively influence their level of education and awareness and hopefully

What’s unique about your work and its philosophy behind it? What’s is unique about what I am doing is that it represents the time we live in, nowadays fashion and moods, and of course it reflects my own personality which gives it a unique cachet. What’s the greatest motivation or passion that drives you to do this profession? As I previously mentioned, fashion design was my dream job, I was motivated by the fact that I am finally doing a profession I am interested in and the flexibility 46 |

in work environment that gives me the opportunity to use my imagination and make it happen whatever it takes so it’s only a matter of finding the available tools and getting it done. does shib square face any obstacles in the production process? The problem we’re facing right now is that we don’t always have all the materials in Egypt, which might put some constraints to my imagination but we do manage with alternatives. What’s fashionable this year? 2013 is really inspired by flashy colors and voguish designs. Stay tuned and wear what makes you beautiful.

If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, it’s yours forever. If it doesn’t, then it was never meant to be. Patricia Janho
“
How did you get into the fashion industry and how did you join shib square? My love for fashion started since my childhood; I’ve been always interested in fashion design. It was my dream job, due to family constraints I could not study fashion design abroad but I was always following fashion trends in all fashion categories. I finally joined Shib Square Company for Slippers and Flip Flops owned by Karim Attalah and Wassim Saba, which gave me the chance to use my imagination to come up with new designs.

“Don’t only knock on doors, walk through them. Tell us a brief bio about yourself. I studied media at Ain Shams University then received my Master’s degree from the University of Miami in Broadcast Journalism before working as a journalism editor, documentary filmmaker and producer/director at ONTV and MBC. I’m a tech enthusiast – I wouldn’t call myself a geek though – and I was interested in the dynamics of the digital world – especially social media and mobile applications – and how it’s becoming of utmost importance to converge traditional media with digital and new media, and it seems to me that when you’re genuinely interested in something, God opens these doors for you and you just have to explore. What’s new about the latest applications? We’re very proud to have worked on this project. The NogoumFM and NileFM apps are unparalleled in terms of features and functionality, even when compared to apps that aggregate lots of online radio streams. Let me tell you about some of the features… • High quality audio stream that has minimal impact on your internet bundle, so it works anywhere, anytime. • Now Playing Feature that shows you the name of the artist and the track title, with the ability to share what you’re listening to, with your friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter. • SMS the studios directly from within the app. • Call the studios directly from within the app.

• Interact with us through Twitter and Facebook from within the app. Send us your requests, comments, and questions. • The applications work in the background, so it allows for multitasking. • Stay up-to-date with the daily and weekly show schedules. • Get to know about our shows. • Watch produced videos in select shows. • Learn about your favorite presenters and know which shows they present. • About us section with the ability to email us directly from within the app. We have tons of other exciting features also in the pipeline with our awesome developers that will roll out as we progress! What’s inspiring about working in Nile Radio Productions and what are some of the common difficulties or obstacles that face you? I have to say that working at NRP was pure enjoyment. I can’t believe it’s been one year already! There were no difficulties thankfully, I was supported by our administration and our Managing Director Hala Hegazi – who believes in the medium and its future –from day one, in addition to having an amazing team working with me around the clock to get everything in order. Everything in NRP is inspiring, lots of fun people, a great office, and a great view at the Egyptian Media Production City, sometimes I feel I’m in Sahel, but without the sea. March 2013 |

Heba Badawy
Owner & Designer of “TamR 7eNnaH”
what’s the concept in your work? Well, my concept was a little different. We used to have the concept and design then we bring the fabrics that match the design, but I did the opposite, I bought the fabrics first then they inspired me. My concept is always be simple, chic and unique to satisfy every delicate taste. What difficulty did you have at the beginning? The biggest difficulty I had was finding a bags tailor who understands my designs and gives me a high quality for the sewing and finish... It was hard. 48 |
| March 2013
What’s your biggest motivation? I adore the decoration field, so I’m willing to blend decor with fashion to come out with the most unique design ever. What’s your dream for your business? I’m looking forward to having my own brand that will be well known all over the world.
“
Always be optimistic and believe in your inner beauty. Heba Badawy
“
Tell us how you started Tamr 7ennah. Ever since I was a teenager, I’ve been in love with art; it was my hobby, my passion, and my way of learning. By the time I graduated from high school, I knew I wanted to study applied arts. So basically I’m an interior designer, I love my work and my whole life revolves around designing. I started “TamR 7eNnaH” in February 2012 with a small collection of printed clutches and it went well so I continued the line by making practical, different, and unique bags.
Faces of Egypt
Catherine Jawish Owner of “Candelino and More”
Tell us about yourself, your career and the start of “candelino and more.” When I first started making candles, it was a hobby, then I had some free time that I wanted to fill, so I started searching for crafts that I might find amusing. I fell in love with candles and whatever linked to their concept. Molds, colors, scents, natural embeds, unusual techniques... It all drove me crazy. Making a candle no matter how simple it was always gave me a sense of intense satisfaction. I decided I should take my amateur fashion of candle making to a more professional level. I started my own candle line ‘Candelino’ and my candles went on the market with rewarding success. Fast forward 6 years later I felt I am even called to wander into the enchanting world of decoration in all its form. I studied some graphics programs, read a lot about decor tips and techniques, had some decoration ‘make-over’ trials at my own home and went on checking the market for all sort of available art supplies and craft materials. I had overwhelming projects in my mind mainly centered about the ‘wood’ material as my ever preferred earthy element and started to break into the field of home accessories design. My most outstanding designs are my personalized name boards, drinking coasters, trays, tissue boxes , wall clocks, magnet boards, lamp 50 |

shades and kitchen themed boards. I called my new line ‘Candelino and More’ as first I kept making candles in parallel with the decoration accents that I added to my line and voila this is how it all started! why did you choose to work in home accessories and handmade crafts? I always had a real passion for handmade crafts and decoration, this field gave me a chance to liberally voice the way I would like to see the genuine artistic side revealed in our daily lives even if this is only expressed through the value and uniqueness of some handmade pieces around the house. The considerable artistic creativity involved in handmade concepts and designs are absolutely second to none. When still in its primary stages, an idea for any of my projects can take hours and days to be fully developed into what I have envisioned to be my next rocking creation. However, what is really rewarding at the end of the day is that I get to freely express my personality through an artistic endeavor that I consciously chose to be devoted to. What’s unique about your work? What makes my work unique is that I do not design with the commercial purpose in mind, I always intend to deliver high-quality designs and I create pieces that are different, authentic, and extremely well finished. I tailor my designs to individuals’ preferences, my clients may get a design exactly as I create it, but they might as well get a piece that is totally customized to their particular events, tastes and favorite characters, and also personalized to the names of their loved ones. In addition, what makes my work unique is that one way or another, almost all my pieces have a sort of a vintage nature as you’ll find my designs portraying old ads, famous golden age actors and actresses, grandma’s kitchen recipes, utensils and appliances, worn-out books, lace elements, old fashion clothing, cottage furniture, etc. In short, whatever triggers the aged feel and makes you and me want to go back in time (like back in the 50’s) is my main signature. What is the greatest motivation or passion that drives you to do this profession? The greatest motivation that drives me to do this profession is that there is no limit to its creativity. One piece can be designed and decorated in 1000 ways. There are plenty of details and every detail no matter how small still counts. It’s always very exciting to find the appropriate pictures to match the theme of each design, to look for accessories like ribbons, buttons, lace, fabric, etc to complement the whole idea. And again the real passion for me is that my work translates the essence of who I am, it captures the era I want to go back to, the
smell of freshly baked bread and brewed coffee in an old French ‘cafe trottoir’, the marvel of sitting in grandma’s kitchen writing down original recipes and preparing homemade cakes and jams, the famous 5 o’clock tea party at the royal garden, and the spring day I will pick my fresh herbs to prepare my natural herbal infused oil. I turn all this into real, tangible, heart-warming pieces that would cordially make people happy to own and offer to others. what type of difficulties do you face in your work? In Egypt, there’s no concept of a craft store, high quality design items are not always easy to find, sometimes I have to go to shops that are not intended for any artistic purposes and yet I have to figure out how I can best employ the only choices that are available on the market. Most of the time I have no option but to move around many stores to get bits and pieces from here and there in order to gather materials needed for one single project! I have to admit that at times, this alone may quench my enthusiasm during the creative mood stages and makes me reluctant to proceed in an idea that might take an extended period of time to be accomplished the way I envisioned it to be!

Common Mistakes We Do While Decorating
Our First Baby’s Room! BE SMART! AVOID THESE!
Decorating for your child’s babyhood and not beyond this age. Unless interior decorating is your major hobby (not likely with one or more young children around), you probably aren’t planning on a complete nursery redecoration when your little one turns into a toddler. So go for a scheme that will grow with your child beyond the first year. Overspending. You don’t need to spend a king’s ransom for your nursery decoration. Of course your baby nursery room should be a cheerful, calm place but not at the expense of your bank balance. Just focusing on your baby’s needs. However shocking it might sound, your nursery is not completely about your baby. Your home will become rather chaotic to say the least and this is one room where you can bond and play with your baby. It really can become a sanctuary. So don’t just think, “I must follow this color scheme and have those accessories because everyone does,” surround yourself with colors and items that speak to you. Going overboard buying baby gadgets and furniture. Stick to the basics: a crib (preferably one that can later convert to a bed), a small dresser, a changing table and a glider rocker. Your nursery will be simpler, more functional, and have more room for your baby to play as s/he grows. If your nursery has little or no closet space, try to find furniture with built-in storage. A crowded room can be overwhelming, particularly during those early morning feedings when you find yourself tripping over baby supplies. 56 |
| March 2013
Keep in mind: • Don’t place the crib right beside the window. The crib should have certain features; the sides of the crib should be neither too high nor too low, there should be no sharp edges, and if it is painted, make sure the paint is lead free. The mattress should be firm and of the right size and shape to fit the crib well. • Use electric outlet covers as the baby will soon be discovering everything around. • Don’t squeeze your budget in the areas where it counts. You can save money on baby wipes, or shampoo, but buy the best crib and nursery chair you can afford. • The baby’s room has to be bright, colorful, neat and simple. It should also be comfortable not only for the baby but also to the mother. Try to choose a room that is close to the parents’ bedroom. It is also recommended to have a window in the room to allow sunlight to come in and for natural ventilation.>> March 2013 |

How is endometriosis diagnosed?
* Check with your doctor before taking any medication
What is a breakfast meal that can improve concentration power? Eggs, bran cereal and coffee! Starting your day off right can improve both long-term and short-term attention spans. Eggs contain choline, an essential vitamin that helps the brain create new neurons. Bran is high in zinc, which helps brain function and has been shown to increase rational behavior by decreasing impulsivity. And finally, coffee is loaded with antioxidants and, when consumed at the right time, it can improve your ability to process information. Ginseng too can help. It improves concentration by enhancing some of the brain’s neural chemicals. Ginseng has very few side effects; a dose of 100 milligrams twice per day is safe.
Can both male and female use condoms at the same time? The male and female condoms should not be used at the same time because they can get stuck together and cause one or the other to slip during intercourse, making them ineffective.
Endometriosis is a common gynecological condition. Normally, the tissue that lines a woman’s uterus, known as the endometrium, is found only in the uterus and is expelled from the body with each menstrual cycle. However, when a woman develops endometriosis, microscopic bits of this tissue escape from the uterus backwards into the abdomen and stick and grow on other abdominal/pelvic organs. A confirmation of endometriosis requires surgical biopsy. This is obtained through a minimally invasive procedure called laparoscopy, a typically out-patient, minimally-invasive procedure. Performed under general anesthesia, this procedure allows your doctor to view the abdominal and pelvic organs to diagnose and subsequently extract the disease. Though certain diagnostic tests can be used as part of a preliminary work-up, anything less than surgical confirmation of endometriosis is considered uncertain.
How do I choose a suitable personal fitness plan to follow? You should follow a fitness plan that is catered to you, and not someone else. It should contain goals that are SMART, and each
thing you do should put you one step closer to reaching your goals. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time Sensitive. Specific: the goal set should be very specific, not broad. Measurable: it should be measurable so you can gauge your progression. Attainable: it should be reachable. Realistic: the goal should be realistic. Time Sensitive: it should have a reasonable but aggressive timeframe.
Which age group does scarlet fever affect? And for how long is it contagious? Anybody can catch scarlet fever, but it usually affects children aged four to eight years old. Because it’s so contagious, scarlet fever is likely to affect someone who is in close contact with a person with a sore throat or skin infection caused by streptococcus bacteria. It may also affect someone who lives in a crowded environment, such as day care. People who have scarlet fever should be considered contagious until they have had at least 24 hours of antibiotic treatment. The full course of antibiotics should be completed to ensure that the infection is fully eradicated.

Enjoy Italy’s Taste at Seasons Restaurant Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at The First Residence BY: FARAH ASFOUR Seasons restaurant at Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at The First Residence is just another affirmation for Four Seasons’ reputation as one of the best places for the most exquisite and delicious food in town. Going through the chic and classically furnished and decorated hallways of the prestigious hotel, we finally arrived into Seasons restaurant; an elegant, serene restaurant overlooking the Nile River. The space is highlighted by stained glass, wall murals, contemporary artwork and a magnificent Murano glass chandelier from Venice. It was Sunday and that was the Italian buffet night. We were welcomed by friendly and attentive staff -dressed in the colors of the Italian flag- who introduced us to the open buffet items to help us choose from the wide array of soup, antipasti, pasta, main course, and dessert. In the cold winter evenings, a hot bowl of soup is just what you need and what’s better than the healthy Italian minestrone soup to warm you up. Seasons boasts an amazing antipasti corner that’s just so fresh and so Italian. We got our share from tomato mozzarella with balsamic vinegar, bruschetta toast with tomato and basil, and carpaccio. Then we moved to the seafood salad section; another specialty of Seasons. We couldn’t miss the smoked salmon, shrimp cocktail, pasta salad with roasted salmon, and salmon gravlax marinated with dill. Italian food is just another word for pizza and pasta. At Seasons, diners are tempted with the à la minute pizza and risotto station that includes pasta selection of ravioli, penne and farfalle with your choice of your favorite sauce from pesto cream, tomato basil, blue cheese or Bolognese. For us, the risotto with mushroom gravy was the evening’s masterpiece. We also liked the pizza margherita with black olives and cherry tomatoes; very light and yummy. If you’re still not full after all that, you can have veal osso bucco with herb soft polenta, lasagna, beef saltimbocca with tomato, eggplant and parmesan cheese, or Sicilian fish from the main course choices. To top it all off, there was a heavenly dessert section where the famous Italian dessert tiramisu and the cantucci with nuts are a must-try.

Mother & Child
Your First Trimester Pregnancy Guide! All You Need To Know About Your Body & Your Baby!
PART 1
Consult your doctor about medications you’re taking Many drugs (even some over-the-counter ones) aren’t safe during pregnancy. If you take any medications to treat a chronic condition, don’t stop but tell your doctor right away to go through your medication list and find out what’s safe and what’s not. Mention everything, even vitamins, supplements, and herbs. See which over-the-counter medications are safe now (and which are not). Get expert answers to more “Is it safe?” questions about taking medicine during pregnancy.
Make sure you’re really pregnant
Most home pregnancy tests can accurately detect pregnancy in the week after your period is normally due; two weeks after you ovulate. If the test shows a negative or a faintly positive result, wait another few days or a week and try again if you still haven’t gotten your period.
If you smoke, quit! Smoking raises your risk of a host of problems, including miscarriage, placental problems, and preterm birth. It also slows fetal growth and increases the risk of stillbirth and infant death. Some research has even linked smoking to a greater risk of having a baby with a cleft lip or palate. It’s never too late to quit or cut back. Every cigarette you don’t light gives your baby a better chance of being healthy.
Take your prenatal vitamin If you haven’t started taking a prenatal vitamin yet, now’s the time to start. It’s particularly critical to get enough folic acid while trying to conceive and during your first trimester. Folic acid greatly reduces your baby’s risk of developing neural tube birth defects.
68 |
| March 2013
Cut down on caffeine Studies have linked high caffeine consumption to miscarriage and other pregnancy problems. Limit your caffeine intake to less than 200 mg per day (that’s about one 12-ounce cup of coffee).
Start avoiding hazardous foods During pregnancy it’s especially important to avoid foods that could contain bacteria, parasites, or toxins; including undercooked meat, unpasteurized soft cheeses, anything that contains raw eggs, sushi made with raw fish, raw oysters and other shellfish, fish that’s high in mercury, and raw.
Get relief from morning sickness Unfortunately, “morning sickness” can last all day and it strikes about three-quarters of pregnant women during the first trimester. If you have a milder case, some relatively simple measures may be enough to help. Try eating small, frequent meals and snacks and sticking to bland, room-temperature foods. Ginger and acupressure bands work for some women. If these things don’t help, talk with your provider about taking vitamin B6 or an anti-nausea medication, these are considered safe and effective during pregnancy.
Make sure your activities are pregnancy-safe Some activities, jobs, and hobbies can be hazardous to you and your developing baby. There are chores you should avoid now, and everyday things in your home; such as cleaning products, pesticides, solvents, and lead in drinking water from old pipes to steer clear of. If you’re routinely exposed to chemicals, heavy metals (like lead or mercury), certain biologic agents, or radiation can happen in some research and medical jobs, you’ll need to make changes as soon as possible. Talk to your doctor about what your daily routine involves, so you can come up with ways to avoid or eliminate hazards in your home and workplace.
Stock your kitchen with healthy stuff Make your pantry, fridge, and freezer pregnancy-friendly by filling them with healthy eats like nuts, fresh and dried fruit, multigrain pasta, and yogurt.
Stop drinking alcohol As little as one drink a day can raise the odds of low birth weight as well as your child’s risk of problems with learning, speech, attention span, language, and hyperactivity. No one knows exactly how harmful even the smallest amount of alcohol may be to a developing baby, so skip the booze altogether. Use caution with deli-style salads (especially those containing protein, like egg, chicken, ham, and seafood), hot dogs and luncheon meats, and smoked meats and meat spreads.
Learn the signs of a pregnancy problem So many aches, pains, and strange feelings arise during pregnancy that it can be hard to decide what’s normal and what’s not. To complicate matters further, some symptoms may be more or less problematic depending on your particular situation or health history and on how far along you are in your pregnancy. >> March 2013 |
| 69
Go to bed early In early pregnancy, you may be more exhausted than you ever imagined you could be. Get more rest by turning in early, even if it makes you feel like a grandma!
Consider your options for prenatal testing During your first trimester, your caregiver will offer you various screening tests that can give you information about your baby’s risk for Down syndrome as well as other chromosomal problems and birth defects. A diagnostic test called chorionic villus sampling (CVS) may also be offered – this is generally done at 11 to 12 weeks.
Think about when and how you’ll announce your pregnancy Some women spill the beans to friends, family, and co-workers right away. Others wait until they’re in their second trimester, when their pregnancy is well established and the risk of miscarriage has declined significantly. But if you’re having morning sickness or pregnancy complications, or if your job is strenuous or potentially dangerous, you may have to tell folks (like your supervisor) sooner than you’d planned.
Buy some new bras and undies! If your breasts are sore, get a good supportive cotton bra. Maternity bras can offer extra support, so try a couple on to see whether you like them. Your breasts might go up one or two more sizes, especially if this is your first pregnancy, and a knowledgeable sales associate can help you with sizing. And as your abdomen expands, maternity briefs, bikinis, and even thongs, if that’s your thing can make a bigger difference in your comfort than you may realize. Find out more about breast changes during pregnancy. 70 |
| March 2013
Follow your baby’s development Sign up for free email newsletters from parental websites and each week you’ll learn exactly what’s going on with both your pregnancy and your baby.
Start taking belly photos Have someone take a picture of you every week, or take your own picture using your reflection in a mirror. It’s a great way to see your progress, and you’ll love having the keepsake. Tips for a great shot: Consider wearing the same outfit, standing in the same spot, and striking the same pose (profiles work best) for each photo.
Start a daily ritual to connect with your baby Set aside two five- to ten-minute periods a day to think about your baby. Just after waking up and before going to sleep works well for many expectant moms. During these times, sit quietly and gently rest your hands on your belly. Focus on your breathing and then start thinking about your baby (your hopes and dreams, your intentions as a parent, and so on). It’s a great way to initiate the bonding process and to help you plan for the kind of parent you want to be.
Try a relaxation technique Deep breathing, guided imagery, prenatal yoga, and progressive muscle relaxation can help you stay on an even keel and sleep better.
Have sex if you feel up to it! In your first trimester, you may feel too tired, moody, or nauseated to make love. But if you’re feeling amorous (and you don’t have any complications that may make sex dangerous), go ahead – you won’t hurt the baby. The amniotic sac and the strong muscles of the uterus protect your baby, and the thick mucus plug that seals the cervix helps guard against infection.
Get ready to see or hear your baby At a prenatal visit around 9 to 12 weeks, you may get to hear your baby’s rapid heartbeat with the help of a Doppler fetal monitor. Many women say it sounds like the thunder of galloping horses. Some women have an ultrasound as early as 4 or 5 weeks (though the standard is between 16 and 20 weeks). If you do get to see your baby in the first trimester, don’t be surprised if he or she looks like a lima bean with a tiny, flickering heart.
Talk to your partner about parenting To get the conversation going, try this creative writing exercise: Each of you makes two lists, one titled “My mother always...” and one titled “My mother never...” Then do the same for “My father always…” and “My father never...” When you’re done, talk about what you wrote down and decide together which behaviors you value and which you’d like to change as you raise your child.
Make a baby budget Think about how you’ll handle new-baby expenses; the cost of clothes, food, diapers, toys, and gear can add up fast. Brainstorm where you can trim your budget to make room for your baby’s needs. Consider making some budget adjustments now, and start banking your savings for your baby. Drink water During pregnancy you need six to eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid per day (48 to 64 fluid ounces) plus an additional 8 ounces for each hour of light activity.
Start a baby name list You have plenty of time to decide on a baby name but it’s fun to start writing down the possibilities. For ideas, visit baby name websites and baby name inspiration lists.
Do some stretching Stretching enhances your flexibility, prevents your muscles from tightening, and makes you feel looser and more relaxed.
Know the signs of a pregnancy problem Here’s a rundown of symptoms that could be a sign of a problem. If you have any of these complaints, call your doctor immediately: Severe or persistent abdominal pain or tenderness, vaginal bleeding or spotting, painful or burning urination, or little or no urination, severe or persistent vomiting, or any vomiting accompanied by pain or fever.
Sneak in a pregnancy power nap When fatigue makes it hard to get through the day, revive yourself with a 15-minute snooze. If you’re at work, find a place you can escape (close your office door, use a conference room, even sit in your car) and set the alarm on your cell phone. Stay tuned for the second trimester guide in April’s issue! *Source: Baby Center

Professional Fitness Coach
T
Mum’s first steps
he beginning of motherhood does not sign the end of womanhood. You should be able to feel beautiful, fit, dynamic, energized. Indeed, although it does feel like it right now, you are still a human being and you can still lead these two lives simultaneously. Indeed, scientists have discovered that practicing a physical activity (notice I never mentioned the taboo word: sport), at regular intervals, can improve both your mental and your physical health. First and foremost, let us define “exercising.” Every coach will come with his/her own meaning of the expression; however, from my experience, I would refer to it as the act of moving muscles of your body in a way that triggers both pride and well being. Namely, having a great time sending oxygen to those very special parts of your body which enable you to stay up all day. Think about it: with stronger legs, you will be able to run after the little last one faster and , with stronger arms, you can carry more of your favorite brand shopping bags! The best would be to join a gym or fitness classes (I can feel that I lost some of you here). Just a second before you decide that this is nonsense. I know you don’t have neither the time nor the energy. Besides exposing one’s weaknesses to strangers can sound terribly intimidating. But what if these were not weaknesses? What if, after all, you were doing relatively better than you thought you would? Let me assure you: trying is adopting. First you will realize that the class is filled with other mothers and wives in your same situation. Second, the coach is friendly, and willing to help you to find your own rhythm and harmony. In no time, you will be fit and proud. And you won’t be the only one (I can bet your husband will notice both changes in fitness and spirits). Otherwise, try working out from home, with what you have. This is more comfortable but may be less effective if you don’t perform the moves exactly right. perienced athletes to copy. As for the exercises, they are basically the same. For instance, squats can be readapted as follows: Water Bottle Deadlift 1. Start with your feet shoulder width apart 2. Place your bottle between your feet 3. Squat down as if you are sitting back, keeping your weight on your heels 4. Keep your chest out and shoulders back. Keep your tummy tight and your back strong 5. Grasp your bottle, and drive through your heels as you stand, with shoulders back and chest out 6. Return your bottle to the ground – with control, keeping tummy and back strong 7. Stand up 8. Repeat 10 times each day More than toning your body, exercising will make you feel more optimistic. Did you know that a certain kind of depression can be cured with simple jogging. Some physicians and psychologists recommend that their patients run slowly but over a long distance. In fact, the brain secretes endorphins when it is subject to endurance practices. These amino acids fill your head with euphoric feelings, just the way drugs do. The advantages are that these are 100% natural, organic, free and selfproduced by your loving organism (yes, your body loves you). Let them spread to your entire being and cultivate this warmth of new and pure energy. Not only will you feel less tired and stressed but you will also want to dress more sophisticated again (according to your personality), you will want to go out and meet friends more often, will be willing to listen to your partner more lovingly and keep up with your children more easily. Fitness has a great property. It belongs in a virtuous circle; if you can gather the will to take a first step, the second step will be fueled by the energy released by the first. In other words, try once and you’ll not be able to stop!

Chair-side Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC) Technology
At Smile Design Cosmetic Dental Center
S
mile Design Cosmetic Dental Center, being a leader in dental cosmetic field, is pleased to announce its latest technological device; the Chair-side Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC). It’s a miracle equipment worker when it comes to dental technology! It is extremely efficient, enabling you to restore your decayed teeth in one visit, it also offers much better quality and comfort due to its natural-looking, non-abrasive, and plaque-resistant material, as opposed to silver fillings, which contain mercury and discolor your teeth. CEREC uses Computer-Aided Design/ComputerAided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology, with an all-in-one built in digital cam, computer, and milling machine. After taking a three-dimensional picture of the damaged tooth this virtual impression is displayed on a computer screen, where the dentist uses CAD technology to design the ideal restoration whether through a crown, onlay, inlay or veneer. Then the milling machine uses two high-speed diamond burs that automatically create the restoration while the patient waits. In less than 45 minutes, the final restoration is ready. Finally, the dentist cements the new restoration and voila! The whole procedure is complete in less than an hour, making uncomfortable impressions and placing crowns in several visits now a thing of the past.
The CEREC treatment procedure means: No conventional impressions! The CEREC 3D measuring camera scans the prepared tooth in just a few seconds. This eliminates the need for unpleasant silicone impressions. No temporaries! CEREC restorations are milled out of a solid ceramic block in just a few minutes. They are then ready to be placed immediately. This eliminates the need for temporary fillings and crowns. No long waiting periods! Because CEREC restorations can be placed immediately, you need only one appointment. And you benefit from tooth restorations which have demonstrated their durability time. The CEREC procedure in just one visit in 5 simple steps! 1. Before treatment begins we inform patients about the benefits of CEREC. 2. After removing the decayed tissue or the defective amalgam filling we create a 3D image of the tooth with the aid of the CEREC camera. 3. The restoration is designed on the monitor of the CEREC acquisition unit. 4. The CEREC milling unit machines the restoration out of a ceramic block. 5. The milled restoration is bonded directly to your tooth. CEREC is one of the most exciting developments in dentistry and Smile Design Cosmetic Dental Center has brought it to you to make your dream smile easier than ever!

Just Because You Are A Mum
Doesn’t Mean Looks Will Change!
By: Noura Hassaballa Nutritional Consultant
Being a mother can be draining and exhausting to the point that you can’t find time for yourself anymore. At one point some women start to think, “What the heck did I do to myself, where is Meee?” It’s true that being a mommy is a whole lot different from being just a wife, but that can’t stop you from taking care of YOU, and trying to look good. If every woman tried to get herself out of the bubble she puts herself in after having a baby, she will live happily ever after! Incorporating sometime for yourself throughout your day doesn’t take that much effort, in fact it will pay back later on. Our looks affect our moods drastically, especially the weight women gain during pregnancy. Some women start to panic once they deliver because they are expecting to lose all the weight they gained in nine months just in one week. Think for a second, it took you nine months to gain all that weight, do you think it will just fade away in a week or so? And please get rid of the belief that while you are pregnant you are eating for two!!! You only need about 300 calories more in your first trimester, and it increases as you go. Start taking it one step at a time by modifying things in your lifestyle and eating habits. Include the healthy meals and snacks along with keeping track of your mealtime. That also doesn’t mean that you will stay home like a couch potato eat and watch TV because you want a healthy baby. Be healthy and stay healthy so your kids come out healthy. If you already have kids, do some activities with them like fast grocery shopping, walking in the mall, running the stairs, and add more walking instead of doing it the easy way and parking your car in the closest parking spot. Wear your workout clothes all day. One common issue many of the stay-at-home mums have is finding big chunks of time for workouts. Try even to hop on the treadmill or do a quick 30-minute video while the kids nap can be tough. Wearing your workout clothes in the house will get you in the mood and motivate you to work harder even if you’re just doing chores around the house. It makes workouts easier; you’re always ready for a quick workout or a walk whenever time allows. It also reminds you of your goal to exercise. Wearing your workout clothes is a reminder to get some kind of exercise, no matter how short on time you are. Eat healthy. Many women take their pregnancy as an excuse to indulge themselves in high fat foods and sweets and like usual cravings are all to blame!!! Not only are you adding unnecessary calories to your diet, but you are also adding a risk of a complicated delivery. Wait that’s not it… Have you heard of gestational diabetes? This is a type of diabetes that some women get during pregnancy. Between 2 and 10 percent of expectant mothers develop this condition, making it one of the most common health problems of pregnancy. What I’m trying to tell you is take it easy, relax, and breathe. It’s not that end of the world that you are becoming a mother, or is already one. Look at the glass half full, experience new things in your body and you. Take it as a challenge that no matter what, you will still be YOU. Happy Mother’s Day :) March 2013 |

Tips that will keep you in shape, healthy and a happy mommy!

Fitness Fact!
Fitness Can Help Build Relationships Think of what exercising with a partner can do for a relationship, whether it’s with a spouse, a sibling, or a friend you used to go to lunch with once a week. Not only that, but exercise is always more fun when there’s someone to do it with. So plan to walk with your spouse after dinner every night. Meet your sister or that friend for tennis or an aerobics class instead of lunch. Besides, people who have exercise partners stay with their programs and reach their goals more often than those who try to do it alone. For long-term weight loss, you need to have social support.

Eat this Exercise that! Sad but true! You still get to suffer from the bad effects of junk food!
Junk food is not the best choice for somebody trying to keep up a healthy, active lifestyle. If you eat it once in a while, as a “treat,” you probably won’t suffer any consequences. If junk food is your regular choice, however, you might end up paying the price. Some people think that if they workout they can completely eliminsate the effects of junk food on their health and their figure. Unfortunately, it’s not that effective, and here’s why: • High-glycemic foods, such as doughnuts, French fries and graham crackers, cause your blood sugar to spike and then suddenly drop, leaving you feeling sluggish, weak and craving more sugar throughout your exercise session. You may want to go that extra mile, but you don’t have the energy to sweat for 10 more minsutes. • Junk food also tends to be high in fats as well as sugars, both of which can lead to weight gain. If you’re trying to gain muscle definition, adding fat to your body can make it impossible. Fat accumulates under the skin, on top of the muscle, so even if you exercise daily, you won’t see muscle tone until you get rid of the fat. Also, muscle growth requires protein, not fats or sugars. • Eating low-nutrient foods on an occasional or moderate basis is not likely to cause serious longterm complications. When they become staples in your diet, however, they can lead to gradual weight gain and increased cholesterol and blood pressure levels, significant risk factors for type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Although research results are mixed, according to the Linus Pauling Institute, high-glycemic diets also may increase your risk for certain forms of cancer and gallbladder disease. The more unhealthy food you consume, the less room you have in your diet for nutritious fare. This 78 |

can lead to nutrient deficiencies, which are associated with a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, depression, brittle hair and nails and organ damage. A sugar-rich diet is also associated with tooth decay. The rate at which long-term effects develop varies, depending on your age, overall health and dietary habits. Because weight gain requires an excess of 3,500 calories, eating 500 extra calories daily typically causes one pound of weight gain per week. • Junk food can lead to a number of health conditions that can affect your ability to exercise. High blood pressure, for example, is a common consequence of eating lots of junk food, according to MayoClinic.com. This is because a lot of junk food is also very high in sodium. A high-intake of junk food could also lead to other health problems, including diabetes and obesity. Any medical condition you have will affect the type and amount of exercise you can perform. • If you exchange junk food for low-glycemic foods, such as vegetables, fruit and lean meats, you will have more energy before, during and after a workout by maintaining your blood sugar levels. Cutting out unnecessary calories and adding more protein to your diet allows you to lose weight and build lean muscle.

Directions: In a large mixing bowl, pour the heavy cream and mix on low-medium speed for several minutes. Once the cream has frothed and slightly thickened, add the sugar and vanilla. Continue to whip on medium-high until soft peaks form. Be careful not to over mix the cream, as it could turn into butter rather fast.
Directions: 1

Separate the eggs into two mixing bowls. Start by beating the egg yolks until very thick and lemon colored. Beat in sugar gradually. Add water and vanilla extract. Mix in the flour. In another bowl, beat egg whites until frothy. Then add cream of tartar and salt. Beat mixture until whites are stiff, but not until they are dry. Fold the whipped egg whites mixture into yolk mixture, carefully, so as to not deflate the egg whites.
Pour the batter into two ungreased 23 cm pans. Bake at 325° for one hour, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Rotate the pans halfway through, to ensure even baking. Allow the cakes to cool on a cooling rack. Invert the cakes.
Place one of the layers on a serving plate or stand, whereever you will decorate it. Brush on, simple syrup evenly and heavily onto the first layer. Dollop with a spoonful of the whipped cream and spread evenly over the cake layer. Arrange the strawberry slices over the cream. Top with another spoonful of cream and spread once again.

Top with the second layer of sponge cake, and brush with more of the syrup.
Place a large dollop, multiple spoonfuls, of the whipped cream. Spread out evenly over the top and allowing the cream to fall down the sides. Using an offset spatula cover the cake completely with the whipped cream. Smooth it out, removing any excess cream.
Cover the sides of the cake with the sliced almonds. Shake off any loose nuts. Using a pastry bag, fitted with a star tip, make 8 rosettes on the edge of the cake. Making one final rosette in the middle. Place the reserved strawberries on each of the rosettes. Slice and serve. Store any leftover cake, covered, in the fridge. Enjoy! March 2013 |

Love & Relationships
Emotional Cheating, Are You In It Already? By: Caroline Coussa
“You don’t have to have sex to cheat. Once you find yourself deleting text messages, you’re probably almost there...”
I
t was when I read this quote that I realized that this topic is really striking! Emotional cheating, emotional affairs, emotional attachments! We always tend to overcome the emotional aspect of cheating, we focus on the problem, the damage, the physical attachment, the actual act of cheating, while ignoring that sometimes emotions are more stronger and tighter than physical ones. These emotions are the driving factor to attachment and maybe love, which eventually might lead to physical attachments and even more… Emotional cheating is very common, very real, and extremely painful. One of the main reasons that emotional affairs are so damaging is that they involve a deep connection, support, sharing, and companionship that should instead be shared with your partner. These are the building blocks of a strong bond between romantic partners, and the sense of betrayal felt by partners when this connection is made outside the relationship is palpable.
The mix up between friendship and cheating! It’s always good to have a few friends that you can trust and depend on when you need a shoulder because you can’t isolate yourself and revolve your entire life around your partner. Having the confidence to share your views and thoughts will always give you the space in a relationship to have your own life too. But there’s a very thin line between emotional cheating and sharing a close bond with someone of the opposite sex. And almost always, this thin line is too blurry to ever notice the difference between friendship and an affair. If you find yourself getting addicted to this friend, be it a coworker or an old friend, and you like spending more time with them than your own partner, that’s not good news for your love life. The relationship you share with a friend of the opposite sex could be purely platonic, but if talking about this friendship with your partner makes you feel awkward, or if you try to hide a few details now and then, chances are, you’ll falling for this friend emotionally. The damaging factor of affairs is that it turns out far less about sex than it is about the total package of deception. Most people can recover from sexual infidelity more readily than from the fact that they were lied to. Finding out your partner’s been emotionally canoodling with someone else makes you think, “What can I believe about our life together?” The big red flag is the secrecy. Emotional cheating is about breaking trust with your 82 |

spouse, not having sex with someone else… What should you do? Back off ! Don’t respond to calls and e-mails as often while you disengage from this person. Should you fess up? Probably not. The bigger deal you make of it, the harder it’ll be on your spouse. But you do have to nip the relationship in the bud. If you think you can shift the extramarital relationship back to something more innocent, you’re probably wrong.
The 9 Bad Things Emotional Cheating Will Bring Into Your Life: 1. You’ll start to lead two lives. On one hand, you’ll try to focus on your own spouse. And on the other hand, you’ll try extremely hard to spend a lot of time with your friend. You’ll have to make time for both of them. And almost all the time, you’ll leave one of them feeling hurt. 2. You start to take your partner for granted. When you get addicted to someone new, you can’t help but push the one you already love just a little further away from your heart. Your partner won’t understand why you’re neglecting them all of a sudden. And for the first time in a long time, you’ll start to test your partner and expect them to pamper you and treat you better even though you’re not reciprocating the same behavior. In your mind, you’re trying to compare your lover and your friend to see who’s a better wooer of you. 3. A lot of petty fights. When you start cheating emotionally, petty fights in your love life will be inevitable. Your partner will hate your behavior because they can’t understand you and your subtle secrecy anymore. And they’ll think you’ve changed because you’re not giving enough back into the relationship to ensure its happiness. 4. Your life will stop moving ahead. You’ll forget about all your goals or ambitions that you’ve worked on for so long. Your life will be put on hold and you’ll start to live in a fantasy world where your friend pops into your happy fantasies all the time. 5. Nothing else would matter to you other than thinking of ways to be with this friend. You’ll spend a lot of time plotting ways to spend more time with them. But since you spend a lot of time convincing yourself that both of you are just friends, you won’t even realize how much you’re messing your own life up. 6. You’ll be frustrated. You’re neither here nor there. You’re in a relationship with a person, but you’re addicted to someone else who makes you happier. You can’t name the relationship you have with this special friend and that annoys you and confuses you. And somewhere deep inside, as much as you want it, you know you can’t have them both. You’ll destroy your existing romance. You’ll plot, ponder and create flaws in your partner just to give a reason for your attraction towards your friend. And these flaws you create in your mind about your own partner will never ever go away. After all, when you pick a flaw in someone, you’ll never be able to see them in the same happy light again. 7. Your priorities change overnight. You may think you’ve not changed, but all of a sudden, your partner would start to feel like a stranger who doesn’t understand you anymore. You’d get annoyed with your partner and their behavior all the time. You may even intentionally pick fights with your spouse to give yourself more space so you can get consoled by your friend. 8. Guilt wouldn’t give you any peace of mind. When you’re cheating emotionally, you’ll feel guilty for what you’re doing. But at the same time, you’ll helplessly be drawn deeper into the web of emotional infidelity, and that makes you feel guiltier for having mixed feelings for two people at the same time. And to shove the guilt under the carpet, you’ll start distancing yourself from your own partner emotionally. 9. You’ll become a liar. You may believe that honesty truly matters in a perfect relationship. But when you realize you’re getting emotionally attracted to someone else, you’ll find yourself walking on eggshells all the time, trying to conceal your real feelings about this friend to your partner. You’ll turn into a compulsive liar whose lies will only get bigger with time. Emotional cheating, as exciting as it may seem now, will only hurt you over time. After all, once you cross that thin line of emotional infidelity, there’s no way you can come out of it without a painful scar. You like each other, you feel good when you’re together, you like talking to her/him and exchanging intimate, funny or even sexy e-mails. S/he gets you. You joke, you flirt, you dress nicer when you meet her/him for lunch or drinks, you write long e-mails or tap out furtive text messages. The problem? S/he’s not your spouse, and your spouse doesn’t know about this. Is this the start of a beautiful (and innocent) friendship, or the beginning of the end of your marriage? And if there’s no sex, can you really call it infidelity? Yes, emotional infidelity! What would be more painful: your partner telling you I love somebody else OR I slept with someone else? The answers will vary, but cheating will remain the same… Stay tuned for April’s issue to get the truth about it!
Mother & Child
The Complexity of
Motherhood
by: Bettina Hemmingsen
Family Counsellor and Therapist
“The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.” Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh Becoming a mother is filled with extreme emotions, ranging from the highest highs and the lowest lows. But women are often reluctant to talk honestly about the experience fearing they’ll be seen as bad mothers. Being a mother is the most wonderful, terrifying, fulfilling, excruciating thing that life has to offer. In other words, it makes you learn about the strengths you didn’t know you had, and fears you didn’t knew existed. Becoming a mother seems to have a domino effect in all aspects of our life as it affects our marriage, friendships and our relationships with parents, not to forget our parents in law, even our sex life, and our self-esteem. The meaning of being a mother is virtually endless. Although being a mother doesn’t come with a job description, you can be sure that it is perhaps the hardest, and the most rewarding job a woman will ever experience.
Unconditional Love From the day they are born, a child will test your patience. No matter what they do or say, being a mother means you will love your child unconditionally. Show your child how much you love them with hugs and kisses. Listen to your child as they recount their day, play games or slip a note in their lunch box letting them know how much you love them. Teacher Mothers teach their children important lessons. You start educating your child from infancy when you teach him that nodding his head means “yes” or shaking his head means “no.” You teach your child how to talk, walk and use the potty. The lessons continue as you help your 84 |
| March 2013
child to learn the alphabet or complete his homework. A mother will help guide her children to figure out their goals and values in life as well as teach them the importance of education, manners and much more.
Disciplinarian Discipline teaches children the important life lesson that their choices and actions have consequences. The relationship between cause and effect is learned when discipline is given consistently and immediately, but it also needs to be the type of discipline that can teach. Natural and logical consequences are two methods that achieve this goal because the discipline is directly related to the misbehavior. For example, if a child throws a toy at someone in anger, then he loses that toy. Inconsistent discipline sends the wrong message. Parents who sometimes but not always punish a specific behavior create confusion. Even worse, it teaches children that they don’t need to obey rules. Parents who give in after hours of pestering or anger from their child only succeed in teaching that she will always get her way if she just keeps pushing. Care Giver Mothers are often the primary caregivers for their children. They know their children better than anyone else. That is why a mother is most often the first person to determine if her children are not feeling well. Especially when children are very young and not able to express their feelings, mothers are responsible for determining if their children are sick. Often, mothers nurse their sick children through the night until they can get medical attention in the morning. Mothers are often the at-home pharmacists who dispense medications and pain relievers. Work & Career The trend in recent decades of more women entering the workforce has had an effect on how old a woman is when she marries, as well as whether she expects to have children. Although women are faced with new options related to careers, raising children is still a life’s goal for most. The majority of working mothers eventually find themselves facing the challenges of managing the conflicting demands brought on by juggling the dual roles of career and motherhood. Whether you decide to go back to work or you’ve decided to stay at home with your children, you may harbor guilty feelings either way. A working mother may fear that she is missing her children’s lives; while a stay-at-home-mom may worry she’s not contributing enough.
Identity Change When you assume the role of a mother, a new and more profound dimension will naturally replace much of your old identity. If you used to be a social person that loved to go out on the town, late night feedings and bedtime stories may take up your nights. If you previously loved your work, you may find it to be stressful and simply quit to stay home. Motherhood can alter your sense of identity and you can feel lost and confused about who you really are. All mothers will experience feelings of self-doubt, inferiority and inadequacy at some point in time. On top of that, being a mother can often be a lonely job, being with your children all day with little adult interaction can make you feel isolated. Furthermore, if you have children and your friends don’t, you may feel jealous or left out when they participate in activities that you cannot attend. The Good-Enough Mother Most women dream of being the imaginary Supermum that manages to juggle the responsibilities of work, kids and husbands with ease and elegance. One that host dinner parties, bake cupcakes, volunteer for charity events and somehow still have time to stay fit and feminine and have a fulfilling social life. For some reason we are never fully content with ourselves and we always feel that we could or should do better. But the question is: are those high standards also the ones that our children will benefit the most from? Donald Winnicott, an English Pediatrician and Psychoanalyst, invented the term “A good-enough mother” and his picture of the “good-enough” mother is that she is a three-dimensional human being. She is a mother under pressure and strain. She is full of ambivalence about being a mother. She is both selfless and selfinterested. She turns toward her child and turns away from him. She is capable of great dedication yet she is also prone to resentment. Winnicott even dares to say that the good-enough mother loves her child but also has room to hate him. She is not boundless. She is real. Real mothers are the best kind of mothers (and the only kind!). It takes an imperfect mother to raise a child well. You see, children need to learn about life through real experiences. They need to learn to deal with disappointments and frustrations. They need to overcome their greed and their wish to be the center of the universe. They need to learn to respect the needs and limitations of other people, including their mothers. And they need to learn to do things for themselves. March 2013 |

The Kangaroo Mother Care
K
angaroo care is a way of holding a preterm or full term infant so that there is skin-to-skin contact between the infant and its mother. The baby, wearing only a diaper, is held against the parent’s bare chest. Kangaroo care for preterm infants is typically practiced for two to three hours per day over an extended time period in early infancy. The label kangaroo care was chosen to describe this strategy because the method is similar to how a kangaroo is carried by its mother.
Today, birth process has become a medical procedure. Once a baby is delivered, s/he is tended to by health professionals who provide medical care for the baby apart from the mother and for the mother apart from her baby. Often, infants are removed from the mother to be washed, weighed, measured, and sometimes given artificial nourishment. This is physiologically and emotionally disruptive to a baby who has been securely positioned for months in the womb, in constant contact with the mother and her familiar rhythms. When the newborn is premature or a small size, there are additional concerns and stressors. Neonatal intensive care nurseries (NICU) have developed to provide specialized, direct care in an environment that is noisy and bright and totally unfamiliar. Incubators with thermostats are used to keep the baby warm and visible. The people around the new infant have foreign voices. The pace of the environment is remarkably different from that of the uterus and physiologically the newborn exhibits increased responses to the dramatic change that has taken place. The neona86 |

tal attachment has been essentially interrupted. Artificial temperature regulation, feeding, and lack of physical contact can have significant deleterious effects on even normal term newborns. For infant, especially pre mature the effects are compounded. That’s why Kangaroo care is essential for newborn, why? Because Kangaroo care really works! 1. It mimics the soothing environment of the womb. The baby has just been in a safe, enclosed, and warm environment. Wrapping a baby skin to skin mimics the familiar environment of the womb as the baby continues to receive touch, rhythm and pressure. Not only does the baby have a feeling of containment (as opposed to lying on a flat bed in an incubator), but also the soothing and comforting sounds of his mother’s heart beat and breathing and rhythmic rocking that he was so accustomed to. 2. It regulates body temperature. A mother has actual “thermal synchrony” with her infant. When a

baby is placed in the kangaroo position, skin to skin with his mother, the temperature of the mother’s breasts actually change so that her baby can better maintain his own temperature. If the baby gets too cold, the mother’s body temperature will actually warm up one degree to help warm the baby. If the baby gets too hot, the mother’s body temperature will decrease one degree to cool the baby. This even works when twins are kangarooed. Furthermore, the flexed position that the baby assumes on his mother’s chest as opposed to lying on his back in an incubator is a more efficient position for conserving heat. It enhances lactation, the prevalence and duration of breastfeeding. With easy access to the breast, mothers experience easier let down, increased milk supply. Mothers are more likely to breastfeed exclusively and have more success with prolonged nursing. It enhances immunological protection. If the mother is breastfeeding her baby, she will raise antibodies in response to all of the microbes that they come in contact with and transfer them to the baby. Some antibodies can even be transferred skin to skin. Touch is so important to the healthy development of an infant that a lack of touch, or separation of mother and newborn, actually causes high amounts of the toxic stress hormone cortisol to be released. High levels of cortisol in the blood and separation from mother may negatively impact immune function as the body may stop producing leukocytes. It lessens crying. Babies, both preterm and fullterm, cry less when placed in skin to skin contact with their mothers. Decreased crying means less stress and subsequently lower levels of cortisol. It enhances growth/weight gain. High cortisol levels that result from mother baby separation have a negative impact on growth hormone. With mother present to help assist in regulating the baby’s breathing, heart rate, and temperature, the baby has decreased energy needs and can conserve his energy and calories, and direct it toward growth. In an upright prone position babies also regurgitate less. Leads to shorter hospital stays. Babies that are practicing Kangaroo Care can have up to a 50% shorter hospital stay than babies who are not “kangarooed.” It provides a buffer against over-stimulation. In an upright prone position, babies tolerate noise and activity around them much better. It supports arousal regulation. When held skin to skin with their mothers, babies spend more time in

a quiet alert state. When carried in mother’s arms, the baby is in a safe place from which to view the world. It is from this safe known place that babies learn about the unknown. In a calm and alert state and in touch with mother, a baby is in the optimum state for observing and processing. It reduces apnea and uneven breathing. Kangaroo Care markedly decreases apnea episodes in preterm infants. When a baby is placed skin to skin on the chest of either parent, there is usually an improvement in breathing patterns. The baby can hear the breathing and it stimulates the baby’s breathing so that the baby imitates the parent. It stabilizes heart rate. Heart rate is actually more regular in babies under Kangaroo Mother Care. During KMC, bradycardia (low heart rate below 100) is markedly reduced and tachycardia (heart rates of 180 or more) rarely occurs. Babies’ cardio status stabilized faster after open heart surgery with Kangaroo Care. Heart rate is so important because baby’s brain requires a steady and consistent flow of blood to get the oxygen it needs to grow and perform properly. It relieves stress reactions. Babies deal with pain better and cry less in response to pain (for procedures such as heel sticks) while kangarooed. It improves neurobehavior. Preterm babies that were given many hours of KMC in the early weeks after birth, compared to those given little or no care, scored higher on mental and motor development tests in the first year of life. It increases oxygenation of the baby’s body. It assists in bonding process and builds attachment, increases maternal sensitivity, responsiveness and connectedness. Builds parent confidence and competence. Holding baby close reduces stress among parents and family. Kangaroo Mother Care empowers parents as they feel that they can do something incredibly beneficial and positive for their preterm infants. It helps parents play an active rather than passive role in their baby’s recovery. It provides longer periods of restful sleep. Kangaroo Care when carried out in a low light, quiet environment with any baby, full or preterm, helps babies to remain more calm and helps in transition from one sleep state to another. Preterm babies were found to have spent more time sleeping during Kangaroo Care. It saves lives. The latest studies show a 51% reduction in newborn mortality when babies (stable and less than 2 kg) were kangarooed within the first week after birth and breastfed by their mothers. It is safe.
About 4 million babies die each year in the first week of life; KMC could help 25% survive. March 2013 |

Body Language Signals Women Need To Know! For women, there is a comparative lack of male courtship signals. Men don’t play a courtship game. They only respond to it. Girls, watch out for the following and scout out your man! When men have protruding thumbs: Thumbs are prominent in hand gestures, as they represent strength of character and the ego. A man uses protruding thumbs, in front or back pockets, around women to whom he is attracted. When men display their crotch: Every woman reading this knows at least one man who sits with his legs spread wide at her, like he is taking her photograph. The crotch display is effectively putting a man’s masculinity on show. His feet are planted firmly on the ground, with his legs apart, displaying the crotch, and letting whoever is observing know that he’s not going anywhere. When their fingers point to what he wants you to notice: When a man’s thumbs are tucked into his belt or into the tops of the pockets to frame the genital area, it indicates a sexually aggressive attitude. This gesture shows to a woman that “I am ready for action.” When men take up space: A man will put his hands on his hips to occupy as much space as possible to become more noticeable. When it comes to male courtship signals, women often ask, “For men, is it always about sex?” Disappointingly for many women, the answer is “yes!”
Tips! • When a man is wearing tight-fitting trousers, small-size Speedos or dangling the long end of a belt or a bunch of keys in front of their crotch, it means they’re putting their masculinity on display. It’s the same as a woman with a push-up bra. • When a man puts his hands in his pocket, it means they are closed-off. • When a man mirrors a woman’s facial expressions, she’ll think he is caring and attractive.

Want “sun kissed skin” all year long? Here are the facts about tanning and sun beds: Sun tanning or simply tanning is the process whereby skin color is darkened. The process is most often a result of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or from artificial sources, such as a tanning bed. Sunlight has a positive influence on our mood, gives us a boost of energy and a healthy appearance. It’s an important factor that influences our happiness and self-confidence. Moreover, the sun generates vitamin D, which protects us against bone and muscle problems. There are even strong indications that sunlight and vitamin D are protective against various forms of cancer. Scientists dismissed the myth that solariums/tanning beds are bad for your skin.To tan in a sun bed is the same as tanning in the natural sun. However, you should remember to always tan according to your individual skin type and at all times look out for the warning signals (allergic reactions or burns). Rule of thumb is to avoid over-tanning in both the sun and sun beds. At Kriss, we follow a very strict procedure before a client uses our Alisun tanning bed. By an extensive questionnaire we determine your skin type, give you a tanning plan which consists of 8 sessions that can be covered in 10 days. We always inform our clients that over-tanning is never good for their skin. We believe in sensible tanning, that’s why we specifically chose the Alisun sun bed. Alisun was one of the first companies to initiate the “Sensible Tanning Association.” The main purpose of this foundation is to achieve explicit regulations for healthy and responsible tanning. Before tanning, make sure you use a pre-tanner to help you get the result you want. After tanning sessions you must use a moisturizer to revitalize your skin. Like spending time on the beach, your skin dehydrates so you need to balance that out by using a moisturizer. Experience having sun kissed skin all year long, while maintaining healthy skin for good.
