My Favorite Book of All Time Some may call me a nerd or a bookworm, but I personally have no shame for being hungry for knowledge. However, one might think that being an encyclopedia, which I am not, would lead to infinite wisdom, but it’s wrong. Throughout my not-very-long life, I discovered that true sagacity doesn’t come from long night readings, but rather from the roots of life, with all it gives from experiences, especially the unfortunate ones. This is the book I prefer and want to keep on reading the most; the book of life. Why? Because this book provides me with boundless epiphanies that are not found elsewhere. In this book, there were sad pages that I wanted to turn but couldn’t, ones that I wanted to rip and burn, and there were the happy pages that I wished they’d never end, but whether sad or happy, all pages must be turned. In this book, you meet different characters along the pages; they are the ones who give meaning to your book, the ones who teach you the crucial lessons. I learnt several lessons. I learnt that happiness comes from an internal state and it needs effort. I learnt that literally, everyone grieves, and sometimes it is okay to be sad and cry. I learnt that missing someone doesn’t mean you want them back in your life, sometimes what one person brings is nothing but pure pain. I learnt, so far, that death is the greatest burden and sorrow; all problems are peanuts next to it. I learnt that the people you love are the true wealth, not the size of your wallet, or your job position, and at the end of the day, the moments with them are the ones that count the most. I learnt that I won’t remember how I was defeated or destructed, but only that I will never walk out the same person again. I learnt that holding hands and kisses are not promises. I learnt that it is not a disaster if you don’t know what you want, and nothing is more satisfying than doing what you want with pride. I learnt that being yourself needs guts in this world. I learnt that forgiveness creates mind and soul peace, even though it may be hard. I learnt that there is no need to worry, what is meant to be will be. I learnt, I learn and will still keep on learning, from my favorite book of all time; the book of life.

Giambattista Valli Fall 2014 Couture Collection
I
nspired by Alhambra Gardens, Giambattista Valli’s latest Fall 2014 collection stunned us all with the first catwalk. The runway radiated with the heat of the gardens and the richness of the flowers, with a mix of Moorish and Spanish all over the collection. The authenticity and beauty of the collection made everyone eager to see what Valli will set our eyes on next. After opening his own production-in hourse, the Italian designer’s first haute couture was produced in 2011 showing in Paris, whereas his first solo collection was launched in 2005. In the same year, Valli collaborated with Macy’s for a limited collection. In 2007, Valli turned down a great opportunity at Valentino to focus on his own career, which turned out to be the right decision. 12 | August 2014
Valli worked for several big names, such as Cecilia Fanfani, Roberto Capucci, Fendissime line, and Emanuel Ungaro. After being inspired by Jean Cocteau’s drawing and fashion illustrations for Dior and Yves Saint Laurent, Valli attended the European Design Institute in Rome in 1986. Following this he moved to London and enrolled in a foundation illustration course at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design.

What to Wear to Different Party Destinations By: Maha Abdel-Latif With summer coming in full throttle, you’re probably finding yourself invited to your fair share of parties, weddings, reunions – you name it. And of course, it’s rude to just not show up to every party, right ladies? And why not be a social butterfly this summer? Make the most of your summer and paint the town red! This guide will help make sure you look good doing it – no matter the destination!
Party Destination: The Beach With beaches quickly becoming one of the biggest go-to wedding destinations this summer, it is now a must for every girl to have at least one beachready party outfit on hand. But be warned – the art of walking in sand in high heels take years to master. For those of us who have not yet mastered this craft, wedges and sandals are there for the rescue. One of my all-time favorite looks for a laid-back beach wedding is the ultra-feminine summer dress paired with wedge heels. Play up this look with a big floppy hat or any accessories you feel would pull the look together.

BURBERRY SHOES & ACCESSORIES
BLUMARINE
Party Destination: Outdoors An outdoor celebration calls for an outfit that lets you stay as comfortable as possible for as long as possible. To fight off the warm summer rays this season, give the trending maxi dress a try in a light, moveable fabric. To be able to move freely on grass or uneven grounds, leave the 5-inch heels behind and slip on a pair of chic sandals.

ERMANNO SCERVINO
Party Destination: Nightclub Perhaps the party destination that gives the most freedom when it comes to outfit choices is a nightclub. This is your chance to let your personality shine through your outfit with little environmental constraints. For an edgy, yet flirty look, opt for black leather pants with a loosely-fitted top. For a sultrier look, try a fitted bodycon dress that hugs your curves, yet still leaves a lot to the imagination.
HERVÉ LÉGER
TORY BURCH
ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
SAINT LAURENT
Party Destination: Indoors Indoor events, no matter the venue, give you room to play around with different looks without worrying about the weather (or sand!). Of course, do keep in mind the type of party you plan on attending and take it from there. For a work celebration with all of your colleagues, opt for a ladylike version of the LBD, and perhaps throw on a blazer to complete the look. For other indoor celebrations, like a birthday bash or a wedding, lose the blazer, throw on your favorite statement necklace, and you are good to go!

Tricks to Make your
LEGS LOOK LONGER JIMMY CHOO
POINTED SHOES Generally, heels make you look longer, giving your legs a toned and lean look. In order to give your legs that longer feeling, opt for pointed pumps and make sure you ditch the ankle straps as they divide the legs into two parts.
Michael Kors
BCBG
CROPPED JACKETS Let alone that cropped jackets are insanely in this season, they also make your torso look shorter, making your legs look much longer. Good for us, cropped jackets come in many colors, fabrics and patterns, which makes them extra wearable!
SAINT LAURENT
NUDE HEELS Nude heels make it hard to tell where your legs end and your foot begin. Just make sure to pick a pair that is close to your skin tone. 16 | August 2014
Badgley Mischka
Diane von Furstenberg
EMPIRE-WAISTED MAXI Maxi dresses are great; they can be worn at the beach, in a casual outing or even at a chic evening. Get a maxi dress with a waistline below your bust, wear your wedges underneath and we promise you’ll look taller and leaner.
Victoria Beckham

GO SHORT Summer means short; short dresses, short skirts, a pair of shorts, you name it. Because you’re keeping your hemline high, your legs look extra long. So to conclude, shorter is better, and sexier too; however, there are limits. Tip: Applying a smooth bronzer on your legs will create a lengthening optical illusion.
Marc Jacobs
Michael Kors
VERTICAL LINES Vertical lines on a pair of pants, especially black and white, will elongate those legs of yours. Pair those pants with your favorite heels and you’re good to go.
Marni
rachel zoe
HIGH-WAISTED PANTS High-waisted anything gives the illusion to the eye that your hips are higher than they really are. Go for a wide leg pants; they’re fun, chic and you say it… will make your legs look longer.
narciso rodriguez
saint laurent
MATCHY-MATCHY Wearing an outfit that has the same hue from head to toe will get the job done; it creates one sleek, unbroken line. Tip: If you wear a matchy-matchy outfit in black, it will not only give the illusion of longer legs, but will make you look slimmer too. August 2014 | 17

DRESS UP YOUR CASUAL! by: Alaa El Garhy
S
tyle is how you use fashion to create the perfect look. And when it comes to style, little alterations can completely change an outfit. So here are some ideas that you could use to dress up your casual attire.
Black Peplum Top: This is when your leather leggings would go best; accessorize with gold statement jewelry, and add black heels for the final touch.
MUST HAVE PIECES: Statemnt necklaces Big stylish earrings Headpieces Embellished clutch Black heels Stylish vest Gold belt STYLING TIPS:
White Shirt: Style it with a stylish vest and wear glamorous heels; this is where statement earrings come in handy!
Casual Shirt: Wear it with a party skirt and statement bracelet and there you have it, your complete fashionable and party look. Tip: A big wavy hair would go perfect with that look.
Kimono: Another Joker in your wardrobe is kimono. From a bikini cover up to late night partying it would go great, depending on how you style it. The best item to add to step up this look is a glamorous headpiece. Tip: Complete the look with an embellished clutch. 18 | August 2014
Jumpsuits: One of the easiest items that you can dress up is the jumpsuit. The gold belt and pop of color clutch is your best friend for the night.

N
BY: AYAT SEIF EL NASR o Makeup makeup look is based on looking good, fixing your flaws and features without looking like you are overdoing it. The aim is to look perfect as if you have no makeup on. This article is specifically dedicated to those of you who prefer to wear the most natural, basic, light, day-to-day makeup. Here are quick tips for achieving this.
Face/Complexion For a seamless result, use either a BB cream, or mix your favorite foundation (liquid, cream or stick) with a face moisturizer. This doesn’t give a full coverage because, obviously, we are aiming for a natural look. Buff it on your skin really well with a buffing brush so it gives a no-face-mask effect. If you have any breakouts, all you have to do is dip a small eyeshadow/concealer brush into the mixture you did, and, very lightly, feather it on the problem area. Apply a little bit at a time. Nobody is going to judge you if you have any imperfections since you are aiming for a natural look. For under your eyes, use your concealer to highlight and hide, pat gently with your fingers to make sure there is no trace of unblended concealer underneath and work it really well into your skin. This will erase the darkness around your eyes and make you look a little more awake. 42 | August 2014
My favorite products: Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream Real Techniques Buffing Brush
MAC Pro Longwear Concealer Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick
My favorite products: Eyes If you have any discoloration or visible veins on your eyelid, all you have to do is pop on a creamy eyeshadow in a natural nude color (color will vary according to your natural skintone), and blend it well MAC Pro Longwear with your fingers all over your lid. Apply Mascara Paint Pot (brown or black, according to your preference), to your upper and lower lashes, but don’t overdo it to prevent clumping. After all, we want a natural effect. Instead of wiggling the brush into the roots, brush your lashes from roots to tips in a swift movement. You can use transparent mascara if you like, but I do not prefer that since we want to enhance our features, yet with minimal applications. YSL MASCARA VOLUME EFFET Bobbi Brown LongFAUX CILS SHOCKING MASCARA Wear Cream Shadow Cheeks This is optional. To add color to your cheeks with a natural effect, it is a great idea to use those 2-in-1 lip and cheek products (cream or liquid tint). Stipple it with your fingers on the apples of your cheeks in a tear drop shape starting off from your hairline on the sides of your face, towards your nose. Do not apply very close to your nose though; just end about halfway through the width of your eyes. Layer bit by bit and do not apply a lot at once. The warmth of your fingers will help it settle and blend in well.
My favorite products: Nars Powder Blush
You can also use your regular powder blush, but be careful with that. Since you didn’t use any face powder and your face is a little bit damp, your powder blush may cling and stick over your face really well. So, dab lightly and apply bit by bit, again from your hairline towards the apples of your cheeks, until you are satisfied with the result. Do not use a shimmery blush since we want a natural flush, just as if you have been running for a whole hour non-stop (minus the sweat of course, imagine that!). Nyx rouge cream blush Lips With the same product used for your cheeks (that is if you used the cream or liquid tint), pat it on your lips; you can apply two shades. Start at the outer third of your lips with the darker shade and move inwards (just like your cheeks). Apply the lighter shade at the middle of your lips to give the illusion of larger, poutier and fuller lips. You can also just apply a simple nude or natural pink lip gloss or lip balm as a quick and easy option.

amadan is over with its long sleepless nights and long fasting hours, and it’s time to celebrate Eid with a little R&R! This article will help you achieve your best skin ever with simple all natural chemical free affordable masks.

Let us start with your face: One of my favorite treats on the hottest days of summer is sitting back with a glass of detoxifying water (water, cucumber slices and lemon slices with ice), a juicy book and a cooling facemask. I love knowing that I am relaxing and cooling off while my pores get smaller and my skin gets softer. My go-to DIY skin-purifying recipe is a super duper simple mixture of plain yogurt, some lemon juice, honey and an egg white. Before I get into the recipe, let me first tell you what each of these ingredients does to your face. Yogurt is chock full of moisturizing properties that keep skin supple. In addition to that, it zaps acne blemishes thanks to its anti-bacterial properties. Bonus: yogurt is also cooling since it is stored in the fridge. Honey also has acne-fighting components and serves as an exfoliator thanks to its mild alpha-hydroxy acids. It is gentle, though, making it ideal for sensitive skin. Egg whites help extract dirt and oil from your pores. They also temporary tighten the skin, which helps reduce the size of your pores and create firmer, more toned skin. Lemon juice battles hard-to-reach blackheads. It also has very mild bleaching properties, which help even your complexion and reduce the appearance of acne scars.
• Revel in glowing skin. While your facemask is working its magic let us put together a concoction for your body. A simple but highly effective scrub to wash away all the dead skin and reveal beautiful smooth skin that will quench our ultra-hydrating homemade body oil!
The Body Scrub: • Mix 1 Cup of brown coarse sugar • ½ cup of Olive Oil • Juice of one lemon Mix the ingredients together and scrub your body in a circular motion; let the scrub soak in for a minute and rinse with warm water and pat your skin dry.
The Body Oil: • • • • •
50 ml coconut oil 50 ml sweet almond oil 2 tablespoons of vitamin E oil 10 drops of sweet orange oil 6 drops of lavender essential oil
Mix the oils together by pouring them into a dark glass container (not clear), give it a good shake, and apply it directly onto your skin. For extra dry skin, apply this oil to wet skin; the oil locks in the moisture in your skin for 48 hours! All the natural oils listed above are sold at local spice shops; just ask for their natural oil specialist.
Sold? I thought you might be! Now, on to the recipe.
Here is what you need: • • • •
1/2 cup of plain yogurt 1 tablespoon of honey 1 raw egg white (no yolk) 2 teaspoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice
Directions: • Mix these ingredients well and apply all over your face, careful to avoid your eyes and eyebrows (I hate getting sticky facemasks out of eyebrow hair). • Let the mask set for 10 to 15 minutes - or until the mask no longer feels cool. • Gently rinse with water. • Pat your skin dry and follow up with a moisturizer or serum. The Stunner
The Tomboy
Wide bold hair sprayed, yet natural waves is what this women’s hairstyle is all about. A stunner is all about being sexy, and obviously her hair is part of this sexiness. She’ll grow it long and twiddle it whenever possible.
A tomboy will want to be “down with the boys,” which means she’ll tie her hair up in a ponytail, almost all the time. However, you might find this woman with blunt bangs, which reflects her same as blunt personality.
The Perfectionist You’ll never find a perfectionist with untamed wild hair flying everywhere. Whether she’ll have it in a ponytail, braid, over her cheeks, this type of woman will make sure she doesn’t go out unless her hair is smooth, slick and nothing but perfect.
The Life of the Party The Innocent This woman won’t do much to her hair, but rather she’ll have it all simple and natural. This type of personality usually likes long layering straight hairstyles, with maybe slights of waves added to it.
Women who are life of the party are usually attention seekers. This means that she’ll try to grab attention from her shoes to her head aka hair. She’ll style up her hair in a glamorous and fun hairstyle and have it in an attention-getter color.
The Fantasist Whether this daydreamer will leave her hair untamed or will go for an updo look, her heart will always take her to a braid. She absolutely loves them! This woman will style it in different ways, from side swept braids to big flat braids. August 2014 | 47
Faces of Egypt
Noura Hassaballa
Founder of Dite Rite – Egypt’s First Nutrition Center Give us a brief introduction about yourself and your background. I am a specialized Dietitian, a Certified Health Professional, and a NLP Practitioner. I was born and raised in the States, graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics/Nutrition (Accredited by the American Dietetics Association). As a dietitian and a CHP my job doesn’t just stop at helping people lose weight, I aim to change people’s life; provide them with knowledge and guidance on how to live healthy and prevent or cure diseases through healthy eating habits. In 2009, I decided to quit my job in the states and come back to Egypt so I can actually make a difference in people’s lives; after discovering that the nutritional knowledge here was zero, and since obesity rate was increasing especially with kids and teenagers, there was a big red light for an epidemic of chronic diseases. Above all, I find my joy in helping people and putting a smile on their faces. What made you take the step of opening the first nutrition center in Egypt? After living here for a while and understanding the culture, I realized that people confused nutritionists with doctors thinking that it’s the same field. Also, that there were so many non-experts giving incorrect 48 | August 2014
nutritional advices, which can be life threatening to people with serious health problems. Nutritionists and dietitians must obtain a minimum of a fouryear degree in Dietetics/Nutrition and the American Dietetic Association must accredit it. With all the misleading information going around about nutrition, weight loss, diet regimens, and everything related to the nutrition field, I had to do something to teach the community what nutrition really is. It’s not a piece of paper that’s given out telling you the diet you should follow. Nutrition is more about living and sustaining a healthy lifestyle and curing your illness with foods. What does the center aim to achieve? Diet Rite’s mission is to provide the community with guidance, knowledge, and correct information on weight loss, healthy eating habits, preventing diseases, and to help you achieve your goal by leading a better way of life. Your center deals with different age ranges and segments, do you have different programs for each of them? Diet Rite provides each individual with a different program; a personalized meal plan that is designed to fit each and everyone’s needs and daily schedule. As well as aerobics classes and exercise programs to help you reach your goal. Can you give us a brief about them? Diet Rite deals with all age groups starting from children at the age of two years old up until adults over 50 years old, pregnant women, breastfeeding moms, and parents. We also offer meal plans designed specifically to treat patients with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, eating disorders (Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia), hypothyroidism, and many other cases.
What does your center has to offer that a nutritional doctor or expert cannot? • Diet Rite offers one-on-one nutrition counseling with no waiting time; punctual appointments. • Assess the client’s current eating habits and health needs. • Provide you with a complete physical report with your metabolic rate, muscle mass, fat percentage, and everything else you need to know about your current nutritional status. • Help you reach the figure you want in a healthy way, and you will never gain double the weight back again like most fad diets out there. • Review your progress weekly; discuss tools and strategies that help you with your goals. • Teach you how to actually eat right and manage food cravings in every tempting situation.
How does the center deal with people who find difficulty to sticking to certain given programs or diets? By using the Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques, I help my clients reach their goal and overcome food challenges. If they have an addiction to certain types of foods, I use these techniques to stop it. By the end of our course the client has a full understanding of how their body work, how much it needs in terms of portion sizes, calories, and exercises. Give us an advice that one should never forget. Always remember that small changes that you make in your daily habits everyday, will add up to big differences at the end of every week.

TOP TIPS FOR A TIP TOP BLOWING HOME PARTY by:Sara fahmy and donia El-naggar
P
arties can be great fun, but they can also be incredibly stressful for the person trying to pull them off. There are so many tasks to be done, so many things to be created and so many things to be brought. Here are some tips to help you out:
52 | August 2014
BUDGET: When it comes to setting a budget, it’s a good idea to set out how much money you’re willing to spend in certain categories, drinks, food, entertainment, decorations, etc. You can also think whether you want to adopt a certain theme or not, like for instance, having a 20’s themed party; and then figure out ways to make that possible on a limited budget.
GUESTS: Consider how many people you can comfortably fit into it - If you’ve decided to have a nice dinner party, then you should probably keep down the number of people you’re inviting. Make sure that you invite people you find interesting and who might find one another interesting. The worst thing is when you invite people who are really unsuitable for one another and don’t mix well.
ENTERTAINMENT: Parties have to have something that make them enjoyable and make them successful. This can be anything from a sweet playlist to a full scale swing band, board games, a theme, or anything you want. The more people you have the harder it would be to have a party that is about games, because it would be hard to organize all those people (not impossible, if you really want to). For large parties having music and a dance floor is a good idea.
CATERING FOR FOOD AND DRINKS: This is another reason why it’s good to plan ahead, and also why it’s good to ask people to bring something. You don’t want to run out of drinks or food during the party. A good idea for drinks is to have one signature drink. You can do something fun for them like having bubbly water with a little fruit juice and some fruit. For some creative food ideas you might try fondue, and you could do your food buffet style and have a theme (like Mexican food night). >> August 2014 | 53
SETUP AND DECORATIONS: When we mention the word (party) we can’t forget that the main thing that gives the perfect mood for the event is the whole setup accompanied by the decorations. Each party has its own mood and theme, and we do have to put in consideration that indoors events are totally different from outdoors! Here’s a little snippet for both: Indoors party: While hosting a party indoors, space is something that requires attention followed by the decorations that you have to add to impress your guests. Adding colors is important but you should put in consideration that the interior of your place and the colors of your furniture and fabrics should be matching the decorations you’re having. You could add corners of flowers as a display, go for pastels or earth colors to be in the safe side.
54 | August 2014
Outdoors party: Perfect outdoor party ideas will leave a lasting impression on your guests; striking colors in your party will play an essential role. Impress your guests with fresh ideas for outdoor flower arrangements; it doesn’t have to be perfectly balanced instead let the flowers sprawl. Using natural materials such as wood, tree stems, sand, tree trunks, and greenery in random centerpieces will suit an outdoor party. It is a simple and creative idea to have a tent or arch from bamboo mixed with flowers, greenery and colored fabrics. You can also use edible centerpieces like an arrangement of melons, citrus, pineapple, and other tropical fruits. Flowers and candle light together create table top decorations for relaxed summer entertaining. If you will use long tables for your outdoor party setting accentuate the flower arrangement set on a runner with a hue that contrasts the color of the table cloth. You can use light furniture for the setting such as comfy leather lounges for your party and you can add some colored cushions with the party color scheme. As for the lighting, indirect warm lights will reflect the beauty of your outdoor area from grass, pool and trees. And the paper lanterns give an instant party feel when you string them above the deck as a festive decoration. Also B-lights turns your calm outdoor area to a cheerful party full of life. And lastly don’t miss having some yummy treats for your guests, delicious yet look gorgeous!

7 Common Mistakes to Avoid when Renovating your Home
Y
ou know what they say about change, and how it’s always good? Well, this is not necessarily the case! One cannot just go for a big change, without calculating the risk involved, and getting prepared to deal with the consequences. Nevertheless, many people tend to ignore this last part, and just go compulsively towards the change, whatever the reason behind it. A very common example for this is home renovation. Whether it’s one room, or the entire house, people just barge into that makeover process, which usually ends up being more of a “startling” mess rather than a makeover. So before deciding on renovating your home, here are some of the things that you should avoid:
This contractor seems nice! It’s really important to know whom you’re dealing with. Many people often deal in a good faith and base their judgments on character, but this should not be the case here. Vladeta Jericevic, Modular Home Additions’ CEO, emphasizes on the importance of checking the references that your contractor provides you with. Don’t just check their portfolio, but you should rather go and check the actual work for yourself. And even if you choose your contractor based on a friend’s recommendation, you should go and see the work they’ve done. Don’t be shy to ask for details, because some things might be acceptable for your friends, but not for you.
Just leave it; they know what they’re doing! Don’t you under any circumstances leave your house for the contractor and workers without checking on them frequently. You have to keep in mind that renovation is a hectic process, and hiring someone to do it for you, doesn’t give you a free pass. Lack of communication and misinterpretations are very common during renovations, and the sooner you discover the problem, the more effectively you’ll sort it out with your contractor. Also, in such cases, having a detailed contract that specifically states what needs to be done would be a perfect guide for both of you.
Any light will do it Lighting is a very important part of any house; it can make it or break it! It’s really frustrating to go all through that trouble of renovating your home, and then throw it out the window because of poor lighting choice. Interior Designer Lisa LaPorta from the reality TV show, Designed to Sell, says that any house should have a combination of three types of lighting, general lighting for all the house, task lighting that is needed for specific purposes (like reading or cooking), and finally accent lighting, which gives the house a unique dramatic style that would reflect the owner’s taste. 56 | August 2014
Under/Over budgeting Setting your mind on cost saving as a main goal is probably not the best idea when renovating your home. American Carpenter and Television Personality Jimmy Little put it perfectly when he said, “If you’re going to do it, do it. If you can’t afford to do it, wait.” This sums it up! There is no room for acting smart here. If you decide to go all cheap, then you can forget about durability and you better prepare yourself for another renovation shortly after. However, that of course doesn’t mean that you should throw your money away! You have to prioritize the tasks, for you and the contractor. Have some extra money prepared for issues that may unexpectedly arise, don’t forget to allocate money for the little things (like electric outlets, door knobs, etc.), and don’t spend too much money on things that won’t add to the real value of your house.
Always go bigger More space is always good, right? But when you’re breaking down this wall to make extra space in your bedroom, you need to know that you’re probably making your hallways narrower. So, although you will be enjoying the space in your room, your house might appear smaller for the guests. Before taking any decision, you have to think about the whole proportions of the house, and try to focus on the bigger picture.
Men and their toys… Not sure what exactly do they try to prove; midlife crisis maybe? Anyways, many men just go all “demolition mood” on their houses for no apparent reason. They get their tools/toys ready, and off to work! And in most cases, they have no idea what they’re doing. Spike Carelsen, former executive editor of Family Handyman magazine, states that “There are three problems with using the wrong tool: You can wreck the tool, you can wreck the project you’re working on and you can wreck yourself.” Which means that they don’t only put the whole house in danger, but they put themselves in danger as well. And although there is nothing wrong with hiring specialists, many men might disagree. So the least they can do is to take the necessary safety precautions; like wearing goggles for their eyes, wearing boots and gloves, because there will be nails and splinters all around them, and most importantly staying alert while using sharp objects and heavy machinery.
It’s my house; I can do whatever I want with it! Whether you’re building an entire new section for your villa, or just breaking down a wall in you apartment, you have to check and get the permits necessary for the renovation, if needed. It might be your house, and yes, you’re entitled to act freely, but as long as there are people around you, there are certain limitations for what you can do. August 2014 | 57

I have a cut on head. Will hair grow back in that area? Doctor’s Answer:
Probably. Superficial cuts on the scalp should not damage any of the hair follicles, which would cause the hair to stop growing. If the cut is deep to the second layer of skin (dermis), it is possible that the hair follicle is damaged and will not generate hair growth.

Borderline Personality Disorder They need treatment not punishment
G
iven all the sources of stress that we face, it’s not unusual to be short-tempered and show signs of aggressiveness, but the question is: how far would you go to relief that stress? Will you be able to confine yourself when necessary? We hope the answer is yes; if so, consider yourself lucky, because others might not have the privilege of controlling their actions, or even their own thoughts.
WHAT’S BORDERLINE PERSONALITY (EMOTIONALLY UNSTABLE) DISORDER? According to the World Health Organization, Borderline personality disorder (BPD) “is characterized by a definite tendency to act impulsively and without consideration of the consequences; the mood is unpredictable and capricious. People suffering from BPD face frequent episodes of unstable emotions that vary from deep sadness to extreme anger, due to being incapable of controlling their thoughts. Consequently, such overpowering impulsive behavior often prohibits patients from maintaining healthy long-term relationships. Also, as stated by The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the term “borderline”, was generated years ago by experts who’ve considered BPD as a borderline or more intense version of other mental illnesses. 64 | August 2014
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF BPD? Generally speaking, it’s hard to pinpoint causes of mental disorders; however, medical researches along the years have shown some contributing factors that may act as triggers for BPD. The three most common contributing factors are genetics, surrounding environment, and brain defects. In his article discussing the nature of BPD, Psychology Doctor, John M. Grohol, states that most experts believe that usually a mix of all these three factors existing together trigger this illness, rather than a single one, which of course makes its nature harder to comprehend. Regarding the genetic factor, Grohol argues that researchers have shown that if one parent suffers from BPD, there is a small chance that it might be passed down to children. In addition to Grohol, Psychiatrist Roxanne DrydenEdwards argues that BPD goes back to early ages of the patient, and that it might be triggered through some sort of abuse or trauma that they faced during their childhood. Edwards also discusses the third factor contributing to BPD, which is brain defects, and that these extreme cases of emotion instability might be the result of abnormalities of certain brain parts responsible for regulating these emotions.
SYMPTOMS AND DIAGNOSIS There is a wide range of symptoms that are frequently traced back to BPD. These symptoms can be easily interpreted or left unnoticed, as they resemble set of behaviors that all of us might get involved in; however, the key to identifying BPD is to recognize the repetition and severity of such behaviors. According to NIMH, people with BDP show signs of intense reactions (depression, rage, panic, etc.) when they feel neglected, whether it’s real or not; they can even get suicidal. They lack consistency in their thoughts, opinions, and actions; this is due to the fact that their self-perception keeps changing. So you can notice them keep shifting between partners, friends, schools and even careers. Furthermore, in some cases, they could experience paranoid or dissociative symptoms, like losing contact with reality, and feeling extremely disoriented as if they’re out of their own bodies. Studies show that such symptoms might be recognized in childhood, but it’s much more common for BPD to be diagnosed at the beginning of adulthood/ adolescence. What makes this disorder tricky is that such attitude is considered normal at the teenage phase, which means that parents might mistakenly think of it as lack of discipline. Subsequently, they’ll
probably ignore the signs, or go for punishment instead of seeking treatment.
TYPES OF BPD Referring to Theodore Millon’s (a prominent American psychologist and author) research on BPD, Psychologist Neil J. Lavender in his article Do You Know the 4 Types of Borderline Personality Disorder classifies and discusses four main types of BPD that he finds essential for people to identify: • Discouraged Borderline: People suffering from that type are inter-reliant and dependent on those around them. Their resentment and anger are usually hidden until something triggers it, they’ll end up most likely hurting themselves as a reaction. • Impulsive Borderline: This type is exceedingly impulsive; they crave attention, and can get easily bored. They are charismatic and outgoing, but in a slightly Machiavellian way. • Petulant Borderline: People within this category are unpredictable, and they often focus on the down side of everything. They are in a continuous struggle between wanting to rely on people, and their fear of getting disappointed or hurt. And when they do get hurt, their anger is really volatile. • Self-Destructive Borderline: As shown from its name, this category’s main problem is their self-hatred. They resent themselves, and therefore, they’re always consumed by this intense bitterness towards everything around them. They are also most likely to engage in selfdestructive behaviors.
TREATMENT Psychiatrist Richard J Corelli, in his work for Stanford University, has addressed BPD treatment. BPD can be treated through psychotherapy, through which the patient can talk about his present state, in connection to his past experiences that might be the core cause of his/her illness. Structure and regularity is a must when dealing with BPD patients. They have to learn new approaches for expressing what they feel, instead of hurting themselves through all that anger and selfhatred. Certain medications like anti-depressants could be helpful; also in extreme cases, when patients show suicidal signs, hospitalization is a must. The objective of BPD treatment is to raise the patients’ self-awareness, and increase their tolerance towards stress and anxiety factors. August 2014 | 65

Drink Yourself Beautiful BY: NATASCIA PAOLUCCI
A
s summer has arrived, A/Cs have been turning full time and so has your body. Indeed, during hot weather, your body has to adapt and burns a lot of energy to keep a sustainable and healthy body temperature. Yes… a form of internal cooling system (without the annoying and constant humming noise). To help your body in this complex and long (even if you think that summer is never long enough) mission, you have to fuel it properly. But this is where the A/C metaphor stops… don’t try to plug. Instead, drink water. And drink water. 66 | August 2014
Failure to maintain proper levels of hydration may initially cause: • • • • • •
Headache Dry skin Passing less urine than normal Tiredness Dizziness Cramping in the arms and legs
As it becomes more advanced: • • • • • • • • • •
Extreme thirst and parched mouth and tongue Rapid pulse Dark, yellow urine Little or no urination Sunken eyes In infants, a sunken fontanelle (the soft spot on the top of the head) Skin that has lost its elasticity and doesn’t quickly return to its normal position after being pinched Absence of tears when crying Irritability or drowsiness Irrational behavior
People at risk (those who should really read this article): • Those who are active, exercise, or spend a lot of time outside • Young children • Elderly people • People with chronic (long-term) illnesses who are taking certain medicines • People who are severely obese • Outdoor workers, such as construction workers and landscapers • Athletes who train outside in the heat • People with low cardiac reserve whose hearts are unable to quickly adjust to the changes the body goes through in extreme heat, such as an increased heart rate. They can become dehydrated very easily, even just by sitting in a house that is too hot or walking outside in hot weather.
General guidelines for surviving the wild (that is where the A/C does not work): • Avoid direct sunlight (prefer shades) or wear a hat if shadows are not available. • Wear loose fitting and light clothes, to allow air to circulate. Interestingly, long sleeves and long pants may be beneficial, especially for sun-sensitive skins, as fabrics partially protect for the dangerous Ultra Violets (Sun-emitted rays that cause skin cancer). • Wear sunglasses, to protect against irreversible damages to your retina (cells at the back of your eyes). Remember to also protect children and infants (there are models adapted to them with elastic bands to ensure that they stay in place, in a goggle fashion). Make sure that the lenses are certified against UVs (and beware of most cheap imitation glasses come with tainted lenses that are not protective). • Drink a lot of cool water all day long. This may be the most important advice. I insist. Not soda, not fruit juices. WATER. Try carrying a water bottle with you at all times.
Guidelines for exercising, assuming 90 minutes workout (for the experienced athletes that I did not scare until now): • 1 to 2 hours before: drink about 16 ounces (500 ml) of cool water. • 15 minutes before: drink about 16 ounces (500 ml) of cool water or a sports drink. • During (every 10 minutes): drink about 5 ounces (150 ml) of cool water. • Just after: drink about 16 ounces (500 ml) of cool or a sports drink. • I insist about drinking cool water and not cold water, because the body assimilates cool water faster, while cold beverages may hurt your stomach (and even cause thermal shocks). Sports drinks may be beneficial, especially if you tend to sweat a lot, as they contain Sodium, Potassium and Magnesium (important electrolytes). However, you should always prefer water and limit your intake of other drinks (as they also generally contain sugars, unnecessary energy and potentially unhealthy chemicals).
“
In conclusion, drink water. And drink water.
“
Dehydration is a medical condition. Yes, it is serious enough to lead to death. It refers to loss of water and “salts” to levels that compromise optimal body functions. And you would be surprised how little it needs to become dangerous. Indeed, we all need water to maintain the blood volume, blood pressure and ensure vital body fluid functions. In addition, the body also needs electrolytes, which we called “salts” for convenience, and which are normally found in blood and cells.
We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.

What does Soda do to your Body? • Drinking non-diet soda leads to dramatic increases in fat buildup around your liver and your skeletal muscles, both of which can contribute to insulin resistance and diabetes. • Sugar is not the only harmful substance in soda that affects dental health. A study shows that drinking soda is nearly as harmful for your teeth as drinking battery acid. • Soda consumption is linked to osteoporosis and bone density loss. Those who regularly consume soft drinks — especially in large amounts — are not leaving enough room in their diets for healthier drinks, like milk and fortified juice. • For those who have digestive issues to begin with, consuming soda will only add to their troubles. The carbonation in soft drinks can irritate the digestive system, particularly in those who have irritable bowel syndrome. • Diet or regular colas contain too much phosphoric acid, which can lead to heart and kidney problems, muscle loss, and osteoporosis, and can even trigger accelerated aging. • Nearly all aluminum soda cans are lined with an epoxy resin called bisphenol A (BPA), used to keep the acids in soda from reacting with the metal. BPA is known to interfere with hormones, and has been linked to everything from infertility to obesity and diabetes and some forms of reproductive cancers. • The high levels of phosphoric acid in colas have been linked to kidney stones and other renal problems, but diet cola is most likely to have a negative effect on kidney function. • One health benefit of soda consumption is that, because it is a carbonated beverage, soda will make you feel full and therefore decrease overall food consumption.

Summer Booty Workout! BY: SAMIRA KHALIL
S
ummer is just around the corner bringing in its colors and clothing styles .We are often concerned with how we look in front of the mirror and we neglect how we look from the back! Speaking of myself, I have always focused during my trainings on my abs and my thighs more than my back and butt muscles. Lets make a change this summer and show off our bikini body!
How many of you have tried million counts of just one exercise and climbed thousands of stairs but still didn’t get the look you wanted? That’s because we always think that the butt is just one big muscle. But it’s not. It’s three muscles: the gluteus Medius, Maximus, and Minimus. So mixing between different workouts and different angels will target toning, lifting and tightening the tush, making you look even sexier in those skinny jeans! It isn’t magic, or a gimmick and it isn’t your genes only. Get off that couch and lets have some serious butt workouts!
Side Lunge Muscles Targeted: Glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves Starting Position: Stand up straight with your feet hip width apart. Performance: Step your right leg out to the side about a stride’s length. Lean onto your left leg, bending at the hip, until your right leg thigh is nearly parallel to the floor. Repeat the same motion on the other side. ** This version of the lunge places huge emphasis on the side of your glutes and outer quads.

SuperMAN Muscles Targeted: Glutes, lower back and hamstrings Starting Position: Lie on your stomach and your arms straight out in front of you. Performance: Exhale and lift both your arms and legs off the floor and hold it! Tightening in your hips, you are going to feel the serious burn here! ** Keep your spine straight and don’t lift higher than a few inches off the ground.
SQUAT Muscles Targeted: Glutes, quads and hamstrings Starting Position: Stand with your feet apart wider than your hips, your weight on your heels. Keep your abs tight all the time! Performance: Sit back and down as if you were to sit down onto a chair. Keep your back straight and lower yourself until your thighs are parallel with the floor. Stand back up and repeat. ** As you lift yourself back up, SQUEEZE your hips as much as possible, brining your tummy in as well. >>

A One Leg Bridge Muscles Targeted: Glutes and hamstrings Starting Position: Same as the bridge except for extending your right leg up towards the ceiling. Performance: Exhale and lift your hips off the floor, pressing your right leg up towards the ceiling. Repeat on the other side.
B Donkey Kicks Muscles Targeted: Glutes and hamstrings Starting Position: Start with your knees and palms directly on the floor with straight back. Performance: Start kicking one leg up towards the ceiling while keeping your hips engaged and tightened. Repeat on both sides. The Gluteal muscles are one of the largest muscles groups and it’s really easy to isolate and exercise these muscles only. Start off with a 15 rep/exercise and make it a goal to reach 50 reps/exercise. Happy Summer!

Avoid Knee Pain while
Squatting
• Warm up. Stretching is extremely important before any workout. Warm up and stretch in order to avoid any pain in your body. • Squat with good technique. If you focus on your squat technique, your leg strength will enhance and your knee eventually will feel better. • Bend knee and hips simultaneously. Most of the stress is placed on the knee, when you initiate the movement by bending the knees, which causes pain. • Knees and toes should be in line. Pushing your knees out too much, or not pushing them out enough will put unwanted force on your knees. • Work on your glutes. Strengthening your glutes will help you avoid several problems in your squat, such as heels coming off the floor, or knees buckling in. • Work on your Abs as well. The toughness of your abs is also crucial to a good squat technique, as it helps you control your weight shift easily. • No need to go deep. Some people prefer to go deep in their squats; however, if it bothers your knees, then it’s a call to cutting your depth. You can gain many benefits without squatting too low. • Massage your knees. There are specific massage techniques to do if you are experiencing knees cracks. Do not ignore this, as it only worsens with time. • Land into a half squat. Landing into a half squat shifts the force from focusing on your joints to focusing on your muscles and tendons. • Good nutrition. When you eat right, you protect your body from any harm. Eat more veggies, fruits, and fish oil to improve your body’s health.

Keep your Meat Safe • Buying. Purchase meat from a trusted butcher or store, in order to ensure it has undergone safe processing; make sure it is fresh. Make certain that meat is tightly wrapped and cold to the touch, because warm meat indicates it has not been stored under proper temperature. Moreover, put in mind to pick it up last when purchasing your grocery, and have it bagged separately. • Storing. If it takes longer than 30 minutes to get the products home, keep them cold at a portable ice cooler. As soon as you arrive home, place your meat in the coldest part of your refrigerator or in the refrigerator’s meat bin. Before placing your meat, make sure that your hands are both clean and dry. Eat or freeze cooked meat within three to four days. • Preparing. Before preparing your meat, it is important to know that you must have clean and dry hands. In order to ensure you and your family’s safety and prevent cross-contamination, use two separate cutting boards: one for raw meat and another for fruits and vegetables. Defrost your meat by putting it in the microwave or in the refrigerator, and avoid defrosting it on the counter. Nevertheless, never re-freeze thawed meat. • Cooking. It is always better to cook meat to proper temperatures in order to kill harmful bacteria found in food. Make sure not to leave cooked meat out of the refrigerator for more than two hours. DIRECTIONS: • Preheat oven to 180 degrees C, with rack in center of oven. Butter six 9-inch x 2 inch (23 x 5 cm) cake pans. Afterwards, line the bottoms of the pans with parchment or wax paper, then butter the paper. In a bowl, sift or whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. • In the bowl of your electric mixer, with the paddle attachment, (or with a hand mixer) beat the butter until soft and creamy (about 1-2 minutes). Gradually, add the sugar and beat until light and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes). Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Add the vanilla extract and beat until combined. With the mixer on low speed, alternately add the flour mixture (in three additions) and milk (in two additions), beginning and ending with the flour. • Evenly pour the batter into six medium bowls, in order to color the cake with the six beautiful Rainbow colors. Put few drops of the six colors into each bowl, we need: (Pink bowl – Orange Bowl – Yellow Bowl – Green Bowl – Blue Bowl – Purple Bowl). Be generous when you add the color because you want the color of the cake to be clear, bright and beautiful. • Now after we have colored our Rainbow Cake, evenly divide the colored batter between the six prepared pans, smoothing the tops with the back of a spoon or an offset spatula. Bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean and the cake springs back when pressed lightly in center. • Place the cakes on a wire rack to cool, in their pans, for about 10 minutes. Then invert the cakes onto a greased rack. Remove the parchment or wax paper and re-invert cakes so that tops are right side up. Cool completely before frosting.
DIRECTIONS: • Using your electric mixer, put the cream cheese and butter on the low speed until they’re smooth and light in color. • Add your powder sugar gradually to the cream cheese mixture and beat on the low speed until they’re well combined. • Finally, add the vanilla and beat for 1 minute on low speed. • Keep the frosting in the fridge until you are ready with your six-colored cake.
HOW TO ASSEMBLE YOUR SIX-LAYER CAKE:
First, place the purple cake first (bottom side facing up) on your serving plate and spread with the cream cheese frosting. Second, place the blue cake (bottom side facing up) on top of the frosted purple cake and cover the cake with the frosting. Third, place the green cake over the frosted blue cake and frost it with the cream cheese. Fourth, bring your yellow cake and place it over the frosted green cake and frost it as well. Fifth, FROSTING AND FILLING place the orange cake over the frosted yellow cake and frost it INGREDIENTS: too. Sixth, now you bring your pink cake and place it straight • 227 grams of good cream cheese, at room over the orange frosted cake and frost in a very nice way just temperature like the picture. You can put some of the frosting in a piping • 60 grams of butter, at room temperature bag and do some lovely decorations. Enjoy this breathtaking • 230 grams of sifted powder sugar cake with your family and friends, and tell them how you baked • 2 Vanilla it. August 2014 | 77

“Wild Women” Gardens Emotional, Spiritual, and Creative Independence for Today’s Modern, Urban Woman By: Lauren K. Clark
T
he spirit of the “wild woman” resembles those caged birds, whom after having been removed from their natural environment for so long, begin their journey of exploration. At first, it is scary. Being disassociated from natural independence, some become hesitant and doubtful that they will be successful. The fear of being put in charge to fly on your own course of direction, create your own nesting spaces, look for food, and most importantly RE-CREATING your own identity can be even more frustrating.
The chanting of the “Independent Woman” catch phrase and song (as recorded by Grammy-award winning group, Destiny’s Child) is more than just a craze of women going out into the workforce, and maintaining their own financial means. Rather, it resembles the metaphorical imagery for a woman to create her garden. She plants the seeds of the fruits she wishes to create. Uprooting weeds that prove detrimental, or forces, which do not stimulate growth; only abundance is nourished and allowed entry. The garden becomes a space, not only resembling physical nourishment, but of emotional and spiritual independence. For modern-day, urban women, the garden is essential in maintaining a harmonical balance, where our own identity does not become lost, in the interaction with another. Whether that connection is with male partners (boyfriends, lovers, or husbands), or our best “gal pals” and female acquaintances; seeing close relationships as contributors to our human experience, and not definers of our existence, is vital in growing our gardens. Those women who are “master gardeners” find themselves in a place of sensuous, spiritual, and emotional well-being. They are not reliant on male attention, or inclusion into popular social groups for inner peace and self-worth. 80 | August 2014
The garden becomes a magical and creative space, where the wild woman is celebrated in her own right. She becomes free to embrace every detail, color, shape, and vibrational energy of her being. Her hair, face, and body illuminate a renewed spirit in how she will direct and navigate herself in Earthly spaces. The garden is her own creation of what paradise means for her. When she releases herself from the fantastical heaven, thereby entering into the “real world,” she is already equipped with her natural superpowers. Either those persons who come into her midst can bring positive contributions, thereby benefiting from the nourishing abundance in her magical pursuits; or, they can be plucked out like weeds that creep into many gardens. The boundaries of her garden, and who enters, are very clear! One of the majestical things in creating the garden is how each fruit, vegetable, or flower that is produced, gives a mirror into the shape and contour of ourselves. The shape, color, smell, taste, and touch of each individual produce as a quality and aspect of our character and personality. For it is her unique energy that is exerted into the creation of the personal gardens we have produced. How refreshing and fantastical it must feel to know that our intimacy with the Earth can be so in depth, that her fruits mirror traces of our
own presence, through her! The phenomenon that in building our gardens, she reflects to us what we have implanted in her. The spirit of wild women, with their emotional, spiritual, and psychological evolvement and health are the foundations for their freedom, and escape from issues of dependency. Their capability to explore the world, and navigate their own directions are endless. One of their “secrets” is that they have already “filled up” their own existence. Interactions with other people are not for the sole purpose of being validated, or filling a void. Attracting and interacting with other positive souls give her the opportunity to spread the creative juices of her garden to others; who, in turn, reflect her energies back to her. Lastly, there are those women, whose song is a prelude to their transformation into the “wild woman.”
Referring to the late, great, and gifted writer, Maya Angelou, (and one of her most famous works, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,”), it is evident that melodic tunes are the whispers of the garden, that famed writer Alice Walker refers to. Such women will be new to this journey in creating their gardens, when cages are no longer suitable venues for their performances. They will doubt. They will be fearful. And, they may even think that the cage is their real paradise. Yet, they will take on that final push. The falsehoods of fake friendships, unhealthy relationships, and partnerships become dismantled. Existing, healthy commitments are awakened as her own identity is, too, acknowledged in such unions. The chains and binds of social pressures, and its servitude ideas surrounding woman will be broken. All the weeds will be removed, and she, the wild woman, will be found in her garden! Mother & Child
Dealing with your Child’s Departure:
Empty Nest Syndrome
T
he time has come when your child, maybe your only one, is moving away either to college or getting married. You always knew that this day was coming along, but like so many other things that we choose to ignore and avoid in life, this was on the top of the avoidancelist. However, it is an undeniable fact, it happens and will continue happening if you have more than one child, and unfortunately it will always be difficult to let go. Suddenly, after your child moves out you will witness mixed feelings such as sadness, depression, anxiety, satisfaction, possibility, etc. What you will, or are currently passing through is called Empty Nest Syndrome. It is sometimes known as the post-parental period, and it is not a medical condition. Rather, as stated above, it is a combination of feelings. According to Better Health Channel, Empty Nest Syndrome refers to the grief and feelings of depression and sadness that many parents feel when their children move out of home. Nevertheless, women are more likely than men to be affected, as they may have been the primary carer. Plus, empty nest syndrome may be compounded by other difficult life events or significant changes happening around the same time, such as menopause, redundancy, retirement or death of a spouse. On the other hand, Psychology Today argues that men can suffer from empty nest syndrome as well, where they will experience similar feelings of loss regarding the departure of their children. Unlike the grief experienced when (for example) a loved one dies, the grief of empty nest syndrome often goes unrecognized, because an adult child moving out of home is seen as a normal, healthy event. Upset parents may not find much sources of support or sympathy.
I MISS YOU It is without a doubt that at this time you’ll experience feelings of sadness. You may also find yourself spending time in the absent child’s bedroom, and maybe even sniffing her/his clothes, so you can feel close to him/her. Psychotherapist and Life Coach Christine Webber and GP and Family Planning 82 | August 2014
Specialist Dr. David Delvin suggest that parents must monitor their reactions and their duration, because if they are feeling that their useful life has ended, or if they are crying excessively or so sad that they don’t want to see friends or go to work, then they should consider seeking professional help. Better Health Channel argues that mothers may feel worthless and unsure of what meaning her future may hold. However, Maria Trimarchi in her article what are the Stages of Empty Nest Syndrome? says that dads suffer the pain of separation as well when his kids move out, although they may not talk much about it. Health professionals advise men to take care of losing themselves in alcohol, food or other escapes. Instead, they should talk about it with their partner, where it may deepen the intimacy of their relationship. Nevertheless, psychologists suggest that it may take between 18 months and two years to make the successful transition from parent to an independent individual.
WHAT CAN I DO? In Naomi Barr’s article The End of Empty Nest Syndrome, a mother who wasn’t surprised by her grief, when her youngest daughter left for college said, “At first simply driving past a soccer game would make me weepy.” However, the 54-year-old mother said that after 4 months she had adjusted, and suddenly she and her husband were going on dates and getting together with friends. She even threw herself into editing a clinical treatment book – something she would never have the time for if her girls were still home. “I absolutely miss my kids,” she says, “but I’m enjoying a really full life now.” Trimarchi says that the empty-nest transition period doesn’t have to be bad at all. Learning how to embrace your newly empty nest is just one part of the journey of parenthood. Children leaving home can change you just as bringing home your first child once did. This could be a good time to reconnect with your partner, and develop a peer relationship with your adult children, Trimarchi suggests. You can even discover new habits and preferences now that you have more time for yourself. This is the stage of exploration, a time to rediscover your interests, your friendships and the world around you. Results of a study published in the
“
If you are still in the process of raising children, be aware that the piles and piles of laundry will disappear all too soon and that you will, to your surprise, miss them profoundly.
“
Thomas S. Monson
journal “Psychological Science” found that during the empty nest transitional period, married women were more satisfied - and found more enjoyment in the time they spent - with their partners. Webber and Delvin also suggests that parents can ease the pain of separation through keeping in touch, especially that it has never been easier to keep in touch like today, due to the new media. Getting that career back on track is a good idea at the meantime, Better Health Channel recommends the following: • Write up a list of all those things you promised you would do ‘one day’ and start making those dreams a reality. • Set achievable goals to start with, for example, short courses are probably more realistic as a first step, than launching into a three year degree.
• Network with friends and associates to uncover employment opportunities. • Join professional associations or hobby groups. • Consider volunteer work to expand your network of contacts. In the end, preparation in any stage in life always comes in handy. That is why; Psychology Today says that preparing for an empty nest while your children are still living with you is useful. Also, start making plans with the family, while everyone is still under the same roof, so you don’t regret lost opportunities. Plan family vacations, enjoy long talks, take time off from work, and make specific plans for the extra money, time, and space that will become available when children are no longer dependent on you and living at home. A Soothing Summer Gemstone BY: NIVINE MUKHTAR
he birthstone of August is a green gemstone called peridot. The sizzling summer Sun of August has been associated with Peridot since the ancient Egyptians time as they called it “gem of the sun.” The name peridot is derived from the Greek word ‘peridona’, which means ‘to give richness’. Peridot is one of the few gemstones which comes in only one color. Peridot’s color ranges from brownish or yellowish green to greenish yellow. Peridot has been confused with emeralds although peridot, being a more yellow or olive color, which is a completely different shade of green than an emerald. The main source of mining peridot in the ancient world was Topazo Island (now Zabargad or St. John’s Island) in the Egyptian Red Sea. Peridot was mined for over 3,500 years on this island. Mining on this island was done at night because legend said that peridot could not be easily seen during the day. Peridot is associated with the Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele. The Hawaiian legend called peridot the divine tears wept by Pele. It is often found in ancient lava rocks and since the Hawaiian Islands are still very volcanically active, the island of Oahu has beaches that consist of tiny grains of peridot. Ancient Romans called peridot the “evening emerald” because its green color continued to glow at night, even in dim candlelight. The Crusaders brought peridot to Europe in the middle Ages. It was used to decorate medieval churches. One of the most outstanding examples is the shrine of the three holy kings in Cologne Cathedral in Germany that holds peridots that are over 200 carats. Sources of peridot include: St. John’s Island (Egypt), Australia, United States (Arizona and Hawaii), South Africa, Myanmar, Brazil, Norway, and Burma. The best thing about peridot that it is inexpensive, plentiful and can be found in large sizes. Its exquisite color fits right into the fresh light summer wardrobe.

book “A Spy Among Friends,” by Ben Macintyre Kim Philby was the most notorious British defector and Soviet mole in history. Agent, double agent, traitor and enigma, he betrayed every secret of Allied operations to the Russians in the early years of the Cold War. Philby’s two closest friends in the intelligence world, Nicholas Elliott of MI6 and James Jesus Angleton, the CIA intelligence chief, thought they knew Philby better than anyone, and then discovered they had not known him at all. This is a story of intimate duplicity; of loyalty, trust and treachery, class and conscience; of an ideological battle waged by men with cut-glass accents and well-made suits. With access to newly released MI5 files and previously unseen family papers, and with the cooperation of former officers of MI6 and the CIA, this definitive biography unlocks what is perhaps the last great secret of the Cold War. Leo Fashion Sense They enjoy wearing animal prints, leather, faux fur, silk, sequins and any other items that draws attention. It is unusual for a Leo to head out without some sort of designer label on their body. These labels are extremely important to a Leo. They enjoy colors that are dramatic like red, gold, and black, and would never be caught wearing silver jewelry–only gold for a Leo, and only the best jewelry money can buy. Leo Hairstyle Their hair may be all over the place as their personalities are as well. They could care less about their hair some days, as long as their personality and confidence are on top. Their hair style will mostly consist of long hair that is a bit wavy or bushy. They see hair as a way to make them complete, but that doesn’t mean to make it artificial or filled with all kinds of chemicals at all. What’s it like to date a Leo woman The first step is to give her praise and adoration. The relationship will never work if she does not receive this from you. Do not look at other women when you are with her, she has to be the only one in your eyes. The thought of competition with other women completely turns her off, for she is marvelous and grand and better than any other woman (in her eyes)! Be prepared however to compete with other men. She makes a good partner because she gives undying affection and love and makes you feel good about yourself. She is kind and supportive with an adventurous streak; she is always fun to be with. What’s it like to date a Leo man The Leo man falls in love easily and it usually does not last. This is because his emotional ideals of a grand and magnificent love affair quickly turn into reality. Leo man needs a woman who is grounded and in-tune with the realities of life so she can help him keep his feet on the ground. He may seem like he is casual and detached about love but this is not the case, he needs adoration and approval and if he receives this, he feels quite passionately inside and will treat her with amazing affection and be a wonderful cheerful companion. The Leo man appears to be a rock solid unemotional king but truthfully, he is very sensitive. Leo Erogenous Zone The back is Leo’s most sensitive area. Most Leos have a well-defined muscular back; compliment them on it while you lightly scratch your fingernails from the base of the neck down to their buttocks. They love a back rub or a massage because to them it is being pampered. Get scented massage oil and give them a sensual massage and it is guaranteed to set the mood for a night of passion! 88 | August 2014
