Editor’s Letter
Make a Statement What you wear and how you style yourself is a reflection of your own identity. The fashion scene is always on the rapid change. Old trends are being revived, new ones make an entry, and season after season there’s always something to keep an eye on. It goes without saying; every woman wants to look her absolute best and can spend enormous time and money on shopping for new things to wear. We keep an eye on fashion magazines, stores’ window displays, celebrity styles, and even Instagram or Pinterest style inspiration so that we are always on top of our game. “Dress to Impress” is a statement we hear more often, but as I come to think of it the only way you’ll impress is when you feel comfortable in your own skin, and carry yourself with confidence, comfortable with who you are. When it comes to fashion and styling, be your own stylist, your own inventor of trends. Don’t follow trends blindly, but rather find what reveals your innermost identity. Make your own statement. Dress yourself in what makes you feel beautiful inside out. Whether you’re edgy, classic, modest, eccentric, or whatever your style is, show it off with pride. Stand out. Create your own fashion world, be iconic, be the statement.

RELATIONSHIPS
The
COMMITMENT
MONSTER I once heard a song to Jadal-an underground Jordanian band- that was called “I am scared of commitment” and it got stuck to my head for a while, little did I know that a few years later this particular song would be an anthem playing in the background of every other relationship blooming, ongoing or ending; but why is that? Why is commitment used as a buzzword lately? Is it the fear of committing? Is it anxiety? This is what we are yet to uncover in this article. For some people being in a relationship is the natural course of life and one of the most basic needs to survive and thrive as human beings according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. But for others, being and maintaining a relationship can be a very challenging thing to pull off due to a number of reasons that are serious but can be solved over time, here they are:
Something better In all life aspects we’re always looking for better opportunities to upgrade our own status so we are never satisfied with what we have in hand. And while patiently waiting can have its own benefits of developing better skills and finding something that is more fit to our own desires, wants and needs, chances are that we may be overlooking some great things in the search of something that is tailor made which is next to impossible in this world. 38 | NOVEMBER 2019
The vulnerability There is a certain vulnerability to loving someone deeply; it feels like they have a hold of you in some way that doesn’t go along with your pride and the way you have carried yourself for years. This is why many of us dodge relationships to maintain our inner strength; and yes while having this kind of power is a great and appealing quality, we can’t be strong all the time.
The expectations High and unrealistic expectations are deal breakers within a relationship. We sometimes seek perfection in circumstances that are far from perfect which builds up tension and breaks the connection within a relationship. It becomes harder for us to maintain a good pace and we start questioning ourselves whether we want to commit long term to such a relation or call it quits.
The suffocation Being in relationships for quite a long time might make you feel like you are stuck in a status quo that in turn creates the urge of wanting to break the commitment and have your own moment. Same goes to being new to a relationship when you have been acquainted to total freedom for long.
The time factor We sometimes feel like the time isn’t right to be in a relationship. Whether it is out of being busy with other life plans at that moment someone shows up in our lives or feeling like we still have more time so we do not want to rush up things or any other time related issue; we always find some way to grow farther apart from our emotions as they tend to startle us.
The experience This one is where we hold grudges of the past against people we just came to know as a result of bad experiences. We confine our significant others to a certain behavioral norm before they even act thus create an understanding gap in the relationship.
The surroundings Given the fast-paced lifestyle we’re championing, work overload and constant state of stress caused by meeting deadlines and carrying extra loads that fall on our shoulder, the majority of humans have grown less tolerant to relationships. These pressures make us not want to commit to anyone as we barely can make it through the hardships of life.
Facing the sum of all fears To face all these factors leading to the commitment monster having a grip on you, you ought to acknowledge some facts which are: Everything comes through a process of trial and error; you will never know you’ll succeed at something unless you have tried your best at it. There is no such thing as the right time and the right person because nothing is 100% right, there are however a number of factors forming a package that adds up to your 100% which include but are not limited to: respect, understanding and being content with your significant other. Recharging your energy through your alone time is a good thing not a selfish one and helps revive the spark within your relationship by increasing the longing to the person you are in a relationship with Bad experiences are good learning experiences that are here to help you understand and not create a fear of ever committing to someone The world never stops spinning but you don’t have to twirl to its own pace. MOTHER & CHILD
DEPRESSION
KIDS GET IT TOO! Yes, you heard that right! Depression can hit at a young age and we’re not just talking about the normal level of negative emotions that kids may develop as a reaction to a given situation nor the general mood fluctuations they go through every single day as part of shaping their personalities along with their likes and dislikes. We are talking about those feelings and thoughts that remain for prolonged periods that may be signaling you that your children may be going through depression; an illness that would need your immediate response in addressing it the right way to save them and their childhood. First, let us go over the symptoms that may suggest your kid may be suffering from depression and not just some blues that would fade away quickly.
40 | NOVEMBER 2019
SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION Continuously feeling sad or hopeless is not normal for youngsters and is heard in the tone of their voice; it would feel like they are going through frustrations or lost faith in getting better. This can be accompanied with withdrawal from social gatherings, loss of interest in things they were fond of, lower than usual energy levels and loss of appetite as well as sleep. Another level of feelings that are easier to spot than the first toned down pattern are anger and irritability. These can come in the form of furious outbursts, loud cries, constant complaining and hostility in some cases. Challenges to their mental abilities such as lower concentration levels and impaired thinking can also be symptoms of depression; a darker level of thoughts can include excessive feeling worthlessness and contemplating ideas about death or suicide. Those symptoms vary from one child to the other in terms of their intensity and availability and are often overlooked and disregarded but since childhoods can be very tough slates to wipe clean or get over in later years we encourage you to offer your kids more support and get them all the professional help they need. DEALING WITH KIDS’ DEPRESSION Talking to your kids about their changes and asking them to voice whatever they are feeling can be a good starting point. However, beware that kids start at a very young age masking or hiding their feelings as they may think that they are going through their mixed emotions alone and that no one would understand them. Older kids also tend to develop a false sense of independence that makes them think that they do not need help; our advice to you is to be patient and always start a conversation and create a comforting safe zone that they can return to whenever they feel like it. Ask for professional help whether it is from a pediatrician, a mental health specialist or a certified kids life coach and always keep track of how much your kids benefit or score progress from their sessions with them. As we said, depression can cause external problems that signal the internal problem happening within; continuous weight loss, stomachaches, headaches and insomnia that happen abruptly can indicate a problem. Seeing a child psychologist or psychiatrist that treats your child through talk or medicine therapy is the right thing to do especially that the pressure young ones face these days is magnified through a whole lot of mediums including the social media. Spending quality time with your kids to restore their faith in themselves and humanity helps them resume their natural course of growth both physically and mentally. Incorporating different activities for them to enjoy and appreciate life happening around them helps them little by little get out of depression.

INTERVIEW WITH CHEF KOMATSU 2.WHAT ARE THE MAIN ELEMENTS THAT DISTINGUISH THE JAPANESE CUISINE? Japanese cuisine involves simplicity, creativity and authenticity. However when we speak of its unique elements we can speak of The main elements that make Japanese food so distinctive are Nori which is a dry seaweed, Shoyu, the Japanese soy sauce and Miso which is a Japanese seasoning that is made from fermented soybeans. In addition to Wasabi which is sometimes called Japanese horseradish and Beni shogaa; a pickled red ginger. We also have other essential ingredients such as, Katsuo-bushi, Aonori and Tare Sauce.
Known as much for his dedication to placing authentic Japanese fine dining on Cairo’s gastronomy map, in addition to his fine Far East-inspired Japanese food, Kunihiko Komatsu is widely regarded as one of Cairo’s most distinguished chefs. He spent 27 years mastering his craft between Hokkaido and Cairo with some of the biggest names in the industry, before joining Shogun in InterContinental Cairo Citystars to embark on a gastronomic venture that continues to evolve and amaze. 1.WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR CAREER AS A CHEF? Many chefs choose their profession because they simply love food. I myself love it and I get great pleasure from eating and enjoying flavorful meals that enhance moods and bodies. I also chose this profession because I have a strong desire to express creativity. Being a chef requires creativity and innovation and it can take on the nature of being an artist when a creative cook steps up to the cooking counter. I believe those who choose to be chefs as a way of expressing their inner creativity can cook their way into signature dishes that draw loyal customers who enjoy the one-of-a-kind meals.
3.WHAT DIFFERENTIATES SHOGUN FROM ANY OTHER JAPANESE RESTAURANT IN TOWN? Shogun is one of the unique restaurants in Egypt which specializes in true Japanese cuisine. Many people think that Japanese Cuisine introduces Sushi only, a thought which pushed many venues to serve sushi as the only unique dish presented by the Japanese cuisine, however, the Japanese cuisine has much more to offer and is rich with a variety of dishes that the Egyptian market hasn’t been acquainted with. Shogun introduces a special menu full of true Japanese dishes not to mention the fantastic teppanyaki, in addition, we use the freshest ingredients, such as local fresh Mediterranean tuna fish and fresh Norwegian salmon. 4.WHEN YOU SAY JAPANESE, EVERYBODY THINKS OF SUSHI, HOWEVER YOU MENTIONED THAT THE JAPANESE KITCHEN IS RICH OF DISHES WHICH INVOLVES A VARIETY OF CULINARY ARTS. FROM THESE JAPANESE SPECIALTIES, WHAT ELSE DOES SHOGUN OFFER TO HIS GUESTS? As I mentioned earlier, we are specialized in authentic Japanese cuisine and what really adds to our distinguished identity is the traditional Japanese menu, which serves dishes that are popular, and very well known to Japanese guests. 5.WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE OF JAPANESE GASTRONOMY IN CAIRO? AND OF COURSE WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR SHOGUN? To maintain its premium level of service, sustain its great reputation in the market and keep guests satisfied and amazed with its new innovative gastronomy inventions and traditional authentic Japanese specialties.
