“Ketchup” Everyone who knows me -well or not- know how much I am a ketchup freak! It’s enough to see me eating a pizza to know how ketchup is never enough for me! It’s my taste buds’ companion! I have small ketchup packs in my desk drawer, a medium bottle on my desk and the grand one in the kitchen! Just in case! Oh and I haven’t mentioned the ones in my car too! Sounds so unsexy but it’s the truth! I love it and I am not willing to give up something I love! This is the number one love equation to me, loving someone or something means holding on to it, no matter how many people keep nagging about it, don’t give it up! One, I love it and that’s enough for me, and two, it’s none of your business! It’s me and my taste buds’ issues! The same applies to your love life; if you love it enough, then this is all it takes to enjoy it! Ignore the rest… No ketchup equals no eating even if I am starving! The mouthwatering fresh hamburger, the crispy hot fries and the ice-cold coke, all look just heaven for my stomach, but I wouldn’t want to eat them without my ketchup… I just can’t taste food without having my ketchup on it! This is another simple love equation to me, as simple as loving my ketchup! Everything is available and everything is just perfectly looking and smelling, but my ketchup is missing… It is the best way to love someone or something, to have everything and anything but you still chose to stick to the one person or thing you love, cause life feels tasteless without it… Too much ketchup never spoils my food, but too little just leaves me craving for more! It also applies to my love equations; too much tenderness always adds up to a relationship and grows it tighter and stronger, while too little causes craving more than what you have, always leading to unsatisfying consequences… Keep tenderness a lifestyle, everyone needs it even your pet does! A very fun, yet beneficial fact about ketchup is: To pour it more quickly from the bottle, here’s a little secret from the folks at Heinz: They say the best spot to tap on the Heinz bottle is the “57” on the neck. All you need to do is apply a firm tap where the bottle narrows, and the ketchup will pour more easily. Well that applies to humans too! You need to know the right spot to everything you love; what are the right times, the right words, the right subjects, the right spots to tackle, and know the too fragile spots, the characteristic defects, and the too dumb moves to ignore… It’s as simple as that! Know what you can do and how; how far you can go testing your limits and how smart you can act accordingly… With no complications or ego! Finally, no matter how little ketchup I have, I share (although I hate to!) but it feels so much better shared!
Love and be loved like me and my ketchup! I love you!

With a passion for design, he then left his native home for Italy where he embarked on his career in fashion by working closely with experts in the leather goods field in Florence. Keen to further his experience he moved to New York to study Industrial Design and spent fifteen years collaborating with high-end retailers, designers, and stylists. His expertise in design and his eye for detail and architectural gems paved the way for his unique and eccentric creations.
Aennis Eunis Finding inspiration from his ethnic background and varied worldly experiences, Eunis established his brand label, Aennis Eunis, in 2009. Bringing a unique and exotic touch to the fashion world, Eunis styles add a Middle Eastern flavor to what is also described as fresh and trendy brand featuring a series of “must have” shoes and accessories. Eunis owes the idea behind his brand to his solid cultural ties, his unique approach to design and his attention to detail. “I come from a strong background of taste and predilection of the Arabian world,” notes Aennis Eunis. The Aennis Eunis Spring/Summer 2013 Collection arises from the heart of an ancient city where a glorious history seeps between the layers of enchanted memories laced in a smoky rush of old and new. Here, asoaring magnificent gate swings open welcoming guests into the epitome of modern Levant luxury, a place enveloped in the manifestation of mystic supremacy, the clatter of fine dining ware, the teasing whispers of a swaying lute, and the hovering aroma of tantalizing oriental spices and ancient recipes infused in contemporary notes floating from the kitchen of a sagacious chef. 12 |

The chef ’s enticing menu, the Aennis Eunis Spring/ Summer 2013 Collection, holds a style-relishing assortment of impressive delights. Inspired by its enigmatic, magical surroundings and stirred by a poem that echoes with exchanging senses, senses that are translated into a fascinating assortment.
Quick Questions: In your opinion, why are many women (if not all of them) obsessed with shoes? I think shoes have become a statement. Good shoes make an outfit or ruin it at the end. This is why women (and men for that matter) are always attentive to footwear. It makes the rest of the outfit easy to figure out. What inspires you in general? My Arabic background gives me many areas of inspiration. I love our heritage and richness we have in almost everything in our lives… music, spices, arts and calligraphy. Then again as a designer working with women, I find myself always drawn to beauty in a woman… and femininity and sensuality of her movements and gestures become base for everything else after.

1. What cheek color works best with a red lipstick? The red lipstick should be the focal point of your makeup, and everything else should complement the red shade on your lips. So keep your cheeks neutral and not too pink or plum. Be careful not to go too brown, though, or your skin could wind up looking muddy and dirty.. Use: NARS Blush in Orgasm, Giorgio Armani Sheer Blush No. 10, Yves Saint Laurent Blush Radiance No. 02, Estee Lauder Pure Colour Blush in Lovers Blush, or Clinique Blushwear Cream Stick in Glow Blush. 2. How do I know which eye shadow color goes with my eye color? To choose an eye shadow lid color that will really bring out your eye color, think back to the color wheel you learned about in elementary school. Choosing complementary colors (those opposite each other on the color wheel) gives you the most contrast and makes each color stand out. If you have brown eyes, shades of blue, blue gray, and plum will make your eyes stand out. Use: Yves Saint Laurent Pure Chromatics Eye Palette in Blue. If you have green eyes, choose shades of pink, salmon, mauve, and brownish-pink to make the green look greener. Use: Dior 5 Couleurs Designer Pink Design. If you have blue eyes, shades of brown, camel, and taupe will make the blue appear even more blue. Use: Estee Lauder Pure Color Five Color Eyeshadow Palette Desert Heat.
2
3. How can I make nail polish last longer on my nails? Apply a base coat before applying nail polish. This will not only make your nail polish last longer but will also prevent yellowness of nails. Use: NARS Base Coat. Always apply double coat of a nail polish especially with darker shades. Apply the second coat only after the first coat is completely dry. Use: Yves Saint Laurent La Laque Couture lasting nail polish No. 01 rouge pop art, Lancome Purple Rose Collection Vernis in Love nail polish in infusion prune, or Dior Golden Jungle Collection Vernis nail polish No. 615 bengale. Apply your nail polish in thin layers. Thick layers tend to peel off. If you have some more time in hand, you can also apply a transparent top coat over your nail paint. This will not only add an extra protective layer but will also impart a gloss. Use: MAC Overlacquer. You may also dip your nail in ice water (after applying the nail polish). The cold solidifies the nail polish. Avoid using your nails as tools, instead use the pads of your fingers when you grab, reach or type. Also, keep your hands always moisturized; if your hands are dry, polish is prone to deteriorating. Use: Clinique Deep Comfort Hand and Cuticle Cream.

The MUST Do on Valentine’s Day:
Red Hot Lips
S
ome contend that Valentine’s Day is simply another day in the chilly month of February, but I contend that it’s an excuse to dress up and pamper yourself. Not necessarily for that special someone (though I’m sure he or she will appreciate your efforts), but because it’s fun to do so.
Jolanda Bakker Makeup Artist
In addition to flawless skin (achieved with a primer, sheer coverage and concealer for problem areas) and gorgeous, shiny locks (hair serums and professional grade styling tools are your friends), every woman on Valentine’s Day should rock red hot lips. Seriously, if you wear red lipstick on just one day of the year, let it be February 14th.
Here are some high quality red lipsticks that suit a variety of complexions. Choose wisely! Estee Lauder Hydra Lustre Lipstick in Rich Red L’Oreal Colour Riche Lip Gloss in Rich Red LORAC Breakthrough Performance Lipstick in Red CoverGirl Continuous Color Lipstick in Really Red Revlon Super Lustrous Creme Lipstick in Certainly Red
Easy Tips For Wearing Red Lipstick: • Consider the lighting. If you’re going to be outdoors, pick a softer or sheerer shade. For evening, go bolder, so your features stand out. • Avoid deep reds if you have thin lips. They tend to make lips look smaller. • Experiment with intense shades if you have strong coloring. Natural contrast gives you more options, says of those with exaggerated natural coloring (for example, paper-white skin, black hair, and blue eyes). • Don’t play up your eyes. Pair red lipstick with the lightest possible eye makeup.A little mascara and beige shadow will do. • Don’t toss a red lipstick in a shade that doesn’t work. Top it with a gold gloss to warm and soften it, or add a pink gloss to take it to the bluer side. • Coordinate your look. Dot a little smudge of the lipstick on the apples of your cheeks, then blend it with your fingers. • Be precise. That means whether you’re using a brush or applying lipstick straight from the tube. Red lipstick should never be applied casually in the back of a tax. • Don’t use red lip liner. If it doesn’t match your lipstick perfectly (and odds are it won’t), you’ll end up with a two-tone effect. If you like using liner, find a shade that’s close to your natural lip color and use it to outline your lips. • Avoid getting lipstick on your teeth. After applying, put your finger in your mouth, purse your lips around it, and then slowly pull it out to remove excess color. 32 |

Creator of Elegant & Stylish Couture BY: FARAH ASFOUR How did you discover that you’re interested in fashion design? When I was young, I liked drawing and I always drew a profile of a woman wearing a long dress. I also kept looking at women’s shoes all the time. How and when was your actual start in the fashion field? I always wanted to work in the field of fashion but first I had to complete my education and study something other than fashion, so I studied at the Faculty of Arts, French Department. After that I went to Milano where I studied fashion at Marjorie for three years. Then I got an offer from Moschino and I worked there in the women’s collection section for eight years. That was a very important phase in my career; I learned how to create shop window displays, how to play with colors and cuts, how to be ironic through designs and how to deliver a message using clothes. What did you do when you returned to Egypt? Was it easy to implement what you learned in Milano? I came back to Egypt in 1999, and honestly, I had a culture shock. My first collection came out in 2000, but people here in Egypt didn’t understand it, they weren’t ready for something different, they didn’t have enough courage. I was depressed, I stopped for some time and that was when I thought of doing a more wearable collection. My second collection in 2002 was a great success and since then I have been present in the Egyptian fashion field. What style do you like to show in your designs? I never imitate other designers; I think I have my own unique style that can be distinguished from the designs of others because there’s always something common in my designs. I love the classic cuts but I still give them a modern twist. Also I don’t necessarily follow the fashionable colors and I ignore the fact that light colors are for summer and dark ones are for winter. In fact, I do the opposite to stand out. Where do you get your inspiration? Mostly from the old movies of the 50s and the 60s; in my opinion, this was the chicest fashion era, and my favorite fashion icon is Hend Rostom. What’s your message to Egyptian women? I address the confident woman who’s not a fashion victim and who has a classic and timeless style. A woman has to be different so that others imitate her and not the other way round. 36 |
| February 2013
What are the difficulties that face a fashion designer in Egypt? It’s very difficult to find the needed materials and accessories. Couture sewing and craftsmanship aren’t of the best quality. Who are your favorite fashion designers? Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, Nicolas Jebran and Tunisian designer Azzedine Alaïa. What’s your favorite color in general and that of a wedding dress? Navy blue is my favorite color. As for wedding dresses, I like non-traditional ones, I prefer off-white, silver and cream to white. What are the pros and cons of your work as a fashion designer? Some women don’t know what they want and which style best suits them and it takes a lot of time and effort to un-
derstand what they have in mind or to convince them of what’s appropriate for them to wear. Moreover, my work is time consuming and I don’t have enough me-time. On the other hand, I have the best feeling in the world when I see a woman wearing my design or I receive complements on my work. To be frank, I don’t feel that what I’m doing is real work, I consider it my hobby and that’s how I overcome any problems I might have. How do you see the fashion field in Egypt now? And what do you think of the young Egyptian designers? Sadly we have no fashion weeks and we have no support for fashion designers. Egyptian designers lack studying and the technique and taste need improvement; however, I appreciate the trials. I think we should have a fashion week in Egypt and there has to be positive competition and cooperation among designers for the sake of the whole fashion industry. What goals do you dream of achieving? Being an international designer and witnessing Egypt become a fashion destination. What’s the optimum outfit for Valentine’s Day? Red is not a must; you can wear any color on Valentine’s Day, red is a cliché. What’s in style for Spring/ Summer 2013? The mix and match of all colors, the 60s style of ball gown dresses and chiffon.

The New Face in Fashion Design BY: Caroline Coussa
How did you get into the fashion design field? Born on 29 January 1989, I graduated from the German University in Cairo, class ‘09 with a double core major: Innovation and Technology, Economics. I worked in a bank for two years but I always felt that I didn’t belong there and I wasn’t able to stand the routine life. Yet, before taking any action, I had to have the plan B thing. At this period of time, I used to watch Project Runway show (fashion designing competition program), on a daily basis, like crazy, non-stop and I found out that the more I watch, the happier I feel and the better my mood gets. While watching each episode, I always thought of what would be my design for this challenge if I were in the designers’ shoes. I also had this good eye and knew in advance the judge’s decision of choosing the winner and the loser before announcing. Thus, from here, the idea of studying fashion design developed and I decided to do my fashion studies at the Italian Fashion Academy. Since then, fashion design has become my passion and my new dream that I’m pursuing.
What’s the definition of fashion to you? “In fashion, one day you’re in and the next day you’re out.” Heidi Klum. Fashion is all about this craze style that tends to change at a very high speed. It’s as fast as a train, if you’re 1 second late, you won’t be able to catch it and you’ll miss the entire thing. So, in order to survive in such industry, I have to always be up to date with the latest trends and launch modern and chic collections at the right time.
what personal qualities helped you in your work? The love of drawing, creating hand-made crafts and thinking out of the box were the key factors that triggered me to further approach this career.
What goals do you wish to achieve in the future? Dressing international singers and actors, reaching the red carpet and becoming an Egyptian famous designer world-wide is my dream. So, the idea of me compet-

What’s unique about your work? Sketching, creating designs and picking fabrics for my first collection feels like heaven. The collection is fashion forward; very simple yet sophisticated, astounding yet alluring designs and looks that are meant to make you shine. Only for the daring... So if you’re dreaming of having the dazzling look that impresses everyone wherever you appear, you don’t need to look further than Nourane Eissa collections that are exclusively designed to highlight your beauty and glamour.
ing with my role model Elie Saab, someday, is so valid... Umm, I mean why not?! I do believe that I’ve got what it takes to push it that far. what’s in for this winter and for spring/summer 2013? This winter, black leather, embellishments, laser cuts, animal prints and outer spacious (oversize) outfits are so in. It’s all about showing the dramatic silhouette. When it comes to colors, burgundy, white and royal blue speak louder than any color. As for Spring/Summer 2013, stay tuned for refreshing pastille color. Can you tell us about some of the obstacles that faced you while starting your fashion career? In Egypt, job opportunities as a fashion designer in a reputable company is so limited, it’s not even there. Before starting my own line as a designer, I would have loved to have the opportunity of gaining work experience at a multinational clothing company or with a well known designer before getting to exploring the entire industry on my own. I kind of lacked guidance at the beginning because professional advice wasn’t provided when needed.

Mary Baramki Owner Of “The Glitz” BY: CAROLINE COUSSA Tell us about yourself, your work and how you started your project. Actually, my career is completely different from my new project, I work with my family -we are manufacturers of shoe components- but this new project is something I’ve been doing besides. I was always amazed by Christmas decorations -mainly abroadand I thought maybe I could turn this amazement into something productive, so I started to put all the different ideas I’ve seen over the years into creating decorations that are original, unique, and new. That’s how I started this project that I’m very passionate about. Why did you choose the field of decorations? I’ve always been fascinated by ornaments and decorations, but I was always disappointed by the quality and the very limited variety we have. I believe this is a field that has many needs that are not being met and I believe that with the creativity, flexibility and capabilities of my team, we will set new standards and offer new and improved products. What’s different about your work? We don’t produce ordinary decorations, our team members brainstorm together to create and introduce 40 |

ideas that are new to the market, that serve every occasion like Valentine’s, mother’s day, baby showers, baptisms, proposals, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, birthday parties, engagement parties, weddings, Halloween, Christmas, New Year, etc. What also makes us different is that we can customize anything for our clients, using their names or creating a certain design or pattern that they request, for any occasion. what motivates you in your work? I have always been into arts and art projects, before this project I was lacking something, but now whenever I create a new item and get a good feedback I feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, in addition to the fact that this market is not yet saturated, so there are still many opportunities. do you face any obstacles in this kind of business? The political instability that we are going through right now is the main obstacle we’re facing.

Making dreams come true, The team behind “Helm” BY: CAROLINE COUSSA
H
elm is an organization that aims to promote employment and the full participation of Egypt’s 15 million people with disabilities in all aspects of life. Helm helps people with disabilities to move forward on career paths. Help builds bridges to business, Helping employers hire, train, and retain job-seekers with disabilities.
How and when did you start HELM? Amena EL-Saie and Ramez Maher were childhood friends, studied the same major in University & work currently at the same human development company. One day a year ago Ramez shared with Amena an experience which affected him at university of a blind student who was sitting next to him in the classroom and was completely excluded out of the classroom when non of the students thought of making a voice over on top of their visual presentations in class- so he did his presentation with sound and that included him in the classroom. That was the day Helm or dream was born! They called it helm because it is the dream of 15 million Egyptians with disabilities- it is such a shame that the basic human rights are ‘a dream’ rather than a reality. That is our mission in Helm. After partnering with some of the best organizations in the field of disabilities in Egypt, we located the gap which is unattended to the most in Egypt; no one attends to employment among many other gaps. Therefore, we aim that people with disabilities become active members in the Egyptian society and to have their fair chance to be employed. Therefore helm acts as the missing link between people with disabilities who need to be employed. From there we started developing more fields and programs such as workshops, scholarships, medical support and more. 42 |
| February 2013
Tell us what are the obstacles that faced you while starting Helm and how did you get over them? The main obstacle is the lack of research and accurate statistics about disabilities in Egypt which is due to the corruption in the government; since it wasn’t in their interest to find the real statistics because that meant that the problem would have floated on the surface and therefore it is one of Egypt’s greatest crimes to ignore the basic human rights of about 15% of the population. We have started building our own primary research- spreading across different governorates in Egypt such as Sinai, Aswan, Nagah Hamady, Nubia…etc. to know the insights and details about that problem. There were too many obstacles, we didn’t know where to start at the right place, that is where Mrs. Maha ELHelaly, Mrs Heba Haggrass and Mrs. Iglal Shenoda helped us and therefore avoided reinventing the wheel. Through Caritas (SETI center) and Advance society, they helped us start our journey and build a strong base for it through their wide experience in the field. There are so many needs and so many gaps- so many people desperate for help. The question was where is the most needed help and what creates the greatest impact and change- that was answered after a lot of field research and the help of our partners.
There is one obstacle that we did not expect! That the people with disabilities are the ones who will give us a hard time. Just like anyone else, they are human beings- some of them try to make use of their disability to get an easy way out. We have had cases of uncommitted employees or some would not accept a job unless it is with the ideal wage in a time of economic crisis in Egypt. Therefore, we learnt how to deal with them. Another obstacle is the financial means to cater for theses needs which is exactly why we are currently registering Helm as an NGO in order to be able to accept funds and help more and more people.
What’s unique about your organization it and what’s different about it? In helm we teach people how to fish rather than feed them a fish- in other words, we help them make a living, develop and be productive. Helm is different because each of the volunteers are dedicated and we try to make a healthy environment and we try to reach the best national and international help.
What’s your greatest motivation that is driving you to work at Helm? The greatest motivation we have is the hope of every disabled child, person or their parents. One parent called us pleading for help and put all their hopes on us to help Shady, their child with mental disability. “What will happen to him when we die? Who will take care of him? We can’t afford 250,000 LE for a home to take care of him after we die. We really don’t know what to do. The government doesn’t know how many people with mental disabilities who cannot take care of themselves are in Egypt. I tell you there are millions!” Said Shady’s Father to us. When we succeed in employing each person it is like fuel to our souls. We feel that we have helped a whole family get a regular income.

The only disability in life is a bad attitude. Scott Hamilton

A Red Spark Of Inspiration! Decorate Your Home Using The Fire Color:
Red!
R
eds stimulate the senses and are associated with strength, joy, motivation, and love. This energy translates into an exciting and courageous decorating color. In color therapy it is used as a tonic, to improve blood circulation, and to overcome depression and fear. It is the color of passion, it can go everywhere from cheery and happy to angry and aggressive, that’s what you’ve got to keep in mind when using red in a room. Use red as an accent color in your interior designs, in everything from lighting and candles to pillows and walls. When you have accents of red it draws attention to other things you might not even notice in the room. The whole idea is to entice, intrigue and invite without clubbing you over the head and dragging you in. When it comes to red, less is often more. When considering which shade of red to use, look to your decorating style and your house’s architecture.

The Many Different Styles Of Decorating In Red! Contemporary design incorporates neutral elements with pops of bold color, often red. On the door: Bold, bright red Inside: Bright red shades in a pillow, rug or throw Modern design calls for all kinds of reds: from primary hues to classic shades with burgundy or brown undertones. On the door: Any red you love that makes a statement Inside: Consider injecting red through a painting or piece of art Traditional design stays away from primary reds and instead involves burgundy or black tones. On the door: A deep, rich red Inside: Decorate with Oriental rugs injected with darker reds Transitional design relies on a neutral palette, a perfect canvas for pops of red. On the door: Match this red to hues you use inside the home, or skip the red door entirely to keep a more neutral theme Inside: Choose a softer and more indirect approach like a red lamp or piece of art Country reds are chalkier and softer: Think barn or scarlet reds. Choose reds with pinkish and purplish hues, like the color of a ripening apple. On the door: Barn red Inside: Accessorize with country reds in knickknacks and fabrics >> February 2013 |

Red & Feng Shui In feng shui, the meaning of red is associated with passion, activity, and excitement. Red is the most dominant and dynamic color for its association with the fire element. Therefore, like fire, red is a symbol of power and transformation. It also represents love, passion, and sensuality so it is a wonderful color to use in your feng shui bedroom and the relationships and love area of the bagua. If you use red in your bedroom, make sure it is a more earthy red since a bright red is much too active to provide a restful space. A red door is considered good luck in feng shui. Adding the color red to the decor of a store front can bring the business owner good luck. A red wallet, too, may help you attract money, but not everyone is going to be comfortable carrying one. Consider a black wallet with red accents if you don’t want to go all red as red can be associated with the fire element meaning that you may spend your money as soon as you put it in your wallet. Color psychology also suggests that although red elicits a feeling of warmth and richness, too much red can be overstimulating and cause tension, anxiety, and even aggression. It will stimulate your appetite too! So if you are trying to lose weight, don’t paint your dining room red. Although it is a very appetizing and beneficial color for restaurants.

Red Effects: 9 Tips for Using Red in Your Feng Shui 1. Activate symbols and good luck tokens. Tie red ribbon around feng shui items or good luck items to “activate” them. 2. Stop the drain with red. Put a red toilet lit cover on your toilet to stop the toilet from draining vital energy from your house (unless your toilet is in the center, southwest, or south sectors!). 3. Add a touch of red. Every room needs a touch of clear, pure red. Look at all your rooms and try to find a red item. In the family room, they make everyone happier, times more fun, and people more sociable. Throw lots of red cushions around the room to get everyone happy and bubbling! 4. Warm up your business. Place your phones and fax machines on red paper to stimulate more business. 5. Warm up your love life. Place red and pink flowers in your living room to bring more heat to your romance. Avoid placing them in the bedrooms. 6. Get more attention for your home. If your home is for sale, get more attention to it by placing red flowers in a vase in the living room or dining room. These are excellent for attracting buyers. You will also want to keep a light on at the rear of the house, too. Lastly, make sure there is some open space in the south sector of your home if you are trying to sell it. Open space means air and it takes
Zara Home Ravina Picture Frame
air to feed fire! 7. Get more recognition at work. Keep a lamp burning in the south portion of your office to stimulate recognition for all your hard work. Add a plant here for an extra boost because plants are wood energy and wood feeds fire. 8. Use pyramid power. The pyramids are one of mankind’s most enduring and well-known symbols. That’s because the pyramid is the shape of fire! Have you got a pyramid or other triangle-shaped objects and don’t know what to do with them? Put them in the south sector of your house, your living room, or your office or desk to bring extra recognition (maybe even fame!) your way. 9. Get the power of nine. Place nine objects on your desk or bookshelf at work for an extra boost of recognition. Or, place nine red candles on a shelf in the south sector of your living room for more fire energy! Even placing 9 work-related books on a shelf in the south sector can boost your fire and fame energy. Red is the color of fire and blood, and like these symbolically ambivalent. In a positive sense it is the color of life, love, warmth, inspired passion, and fertility; in a negative sense it is the color of war, the destructive power of fire, loss of blood, and hate.

here are destinations that ignite our passions and feed our fire from within. Tropical islands, the whirl of the metropolis… Love has many places of worship. Here are the most beautiful places in the world to share with your loved one this Valentine’s Day!
The Most International: The I Love You Wall – Paris, France This mosaic, hidden in a square in the heart of Montmartre, was done by two French artists and illustrates how to say “I love you” in more than 250 languages. If you have flights to Paris for the special day, make sure this is a stop on your romantic walking tour. Do you know, for example, how to say it in Javanese? Look a little closer, “Aku tresno marag sliromu!”
The Most Languorous: Love Park – Lima, Peru Inaugurated in 1993, this park is filled with sculptures celebrating that mysterious connection which brings two people together; love. One of those statues, of two lovers in each other’s arms, has become a must-see for helpless romantics. It is also the place where the longest kiss world championship takes place. The record to beat on February 14th: 60 minutes!

und The World ! The Most Theatrical: Juliet’s House – Verona, Italy No one knows for sure if the Juliet ever lived in this house but legend has it that the the house was hers. Although the home and adjoining chapel were run-down until the beginning of the twentieth century, now it is one of the most visited sites, particularly for women with lost loves, lost connections. It is also good luck to rub the right breast of the golden statue which stands in the middle of the courtyard.
The Most Photogenic: Galesnjak Island – Croatia This heart-shaped island, the shape of which was discovered thanks to Google Earth, attracts hundreds of love-struck pilgrims. It’s a little rugged though since it has no fresh water, no electricity and no inhabitants. If you like playing it the Swiss Family Robinson way though, it’s a perfect retreat.>>

The Most Oriental: Kiyomizu-Dera Sanctuary – Kyoto This Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto houses two sacred stones in a shrine dedicated to the god of “good matchmaking.” Lonely-hearted visitors who successfully walk from one stone to the other with their eyes closed will find true love. Couples that are able to link the stones will share eternal love together.
The Most Moving: Tislit and Isli Lakes – Morocco According to local folklore, Tislet and Isli were the Romeo and Juliet of the Berber world. These two lakes located just beyond the High Atlas mountains were formed out of the lovers’ tears when they were separated. Accessible with flights to Marrakech or Fez. The lakes are located on backroads and during certain times of the year 4x4s are necessary to reach them.

Whatever the journey is, it’s not only the destination that matters, but the person with whom you travel. Unknown
The Most Adventurous: Spitzberg – Norway Legend says that couples who see the magical aurora borealis across this northern landscape in the farthest reaches of Norway will remain together for the rest of their lives (that is, if they make it back to civilization without freezing to death!). The best time to catch the lights is between September and March.

The Most Mythical: Piccadilly Circus – London Since 1893, Eros has pointed his magical bow at the crowds passing through one of London’s busiest junctions. Apart from the fact that men’s belly fat doesn’t look good, why is it harmful to health?
Can antidepressants affect my sex life?
* Check with your doctor before taking any medication
Sexual issues are common side effects of antidepressants and other psychiatric drugs. Research suggests that 37% of people who take antidepressants experience some form of sexual dysfunction, from decreasing libido to increasing the time it takes to reach orgasm. If sexual issues surface after you start taking the medication, inform your physician.
I’ve heard that the cause of watery eyes could be blocked tear duct, what is it exactly? When you have a blocked tear duct, your tears can’t drain normally, leaving you with a watery, irritated eye. Blocked tear ducts are caused by a partial or complete obstruction in the tear drainage system. As many as 20% of newborn babies have a blocked tear duct at birth, but it usually clears up on its own in the first year of life. Adults can get a blocked tear duct as a result of an infection, inflammation, an injury or a tumor. A blocked tear duct almost always is correctable, but the treatment depends on the cause and the age. 62 |

Belly fat (or omentum fat) is particularly harmful because it is so close to your solid organs, and thus is their best energy source. Omentum fat is linked to other health risks, such as high LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol). Moreover, it secretes very little adiponectin, which is a stress and inflammation-reducing chemical that’s related to the hungercontrolling hormone leptin. When you have less fat, you secrete more adiponectin, which reduces inflammation. Thus, the more omentum fat you have, the less fat regulating adiponectin you’ll produce. Those who have low levels of adiponectin have abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other risk factors associated with coronary artery disease. There are even links between omentum fat and cancer..

Some semi-vegetarians may not eat red meat but may eat fish and perhaps chicken. Lactoovovegetarian (lacto - dairy; ovo - eggs); includes eggs, milk, and milk products but no meat or fish is consumed. Lactovegetarian; milk and milk products are included, but not eggs or meat or fish. Vegan; excludes all fish and animal products, including eggs, milk, and milk products.
How long does recovery from miscarriage usually take?

Physical recovery from miscarriage in most cases will take only a few hours to a couple of days. Expect your period to return within six weeks. In the meantime, call your doctor if you experience heavy bleeding, fever, chills or severe pain. These signs and symptoms could indicate an infection. Avoid having sex or putting anything in your vagina such as a tampon or douche for two weeks after a miscarriage.

Your FAT Questions, Answered! Everything You Need To Know About Fats!
Q: Can I Lose Fat Cells? A: Yes, but most simply shrink when you lose weight. 95% of a fat cell is fat, which is drawn out by other cells for energy. Sometimes the cell dies, but empty ones usually stick around for future fuel storage. That’s good news: Without those empty “tanks,” other fat cells can fill up and secrete toxic proteins that can lead to disease.
Q: Is Cellulite Different From Fat? A: Cellulite is ordinary fat trapped between connective tissue, tent pole, like fibers that help support the body’s other tissues and organs. Women whose connective tissue is less elastic tend to develop cellulite when they gain weight as fat cells bulge against skin, causing bumps and ripples.
Q: Are Fatty Foods More Likely To Make Me Fat? A: In theory, if you’re burning more calories than you consume, you can eat a diet full of fat and not store an ounce of it. In reality, fat packs a calorie wallop of 9 per gram, versus 4 for carbs and protein, so eating too much fat can make it harder to maintain your weight. And focus on unsaturated fats such as those found in avocado and olive oil. Saturated fats (in meat and dairy) can raise cholesterol levels. All excess calories will be converted to fat.
Q: Do Extra Fat Cells Make You Hungrier? A: Sadly, yes. Fat cells produce leptin, a hormone that at low levels suppresses appetite. But excess and full fat cells make so much leptin that the “I’m full” signal doesn’t work well anymore. Keep hunger at bay with foods high in filling fiber (found in veggies and whole grains) and protein (such as in fish and lean turkey).
Q:Should I Reduce My Saturated Fat Intake? A: The answer depends upon how much saturated fat you’re currently eating and what you’d eat instead. Saturated fats are found in meat, dairy products, eggs and oils. The current recommendation is to cut back on those foods or choose versions low in fat. The key is to keep your saturated fat intake at the recommended level and replace excess saturated fats with healthier mono- and polyunsaturated fats. 64 |

Q: What Are the Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids? A: Omega-3 fatty acids are found in seafood (especially oily, cold-water, ocean fish - here’s how much omega-3 fatty acids are in fish), flax seeds, walnuts, canola oil and soy. They’re called essential fatty acids because your body can’t create them, so you have to get them from your diet. The current recommendation is to choose more foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids to reap the benefits.
Q: Which Is Better: Butter or Margarine? A: Margarine became a popular replacement for butter when concerns about saturated fat intake surfaced in the 1970s. Since margarine is basically butter-flavored vegetable oil, it has to be processed in some way to make it semisolid so it’s smooth and spreadable. Some types of margarine are created by partial hydrogenation, so they’re high in trans-fats. But not all are.
Q: How Much Fat Do I Need? A: You need some fat in your diet. It’s used as a form of energy for your daily activities and it helps you absorb vitamins A, D, E and K (the fat-soluble vitamins). But fat is higher in calories than carbohydrates or protein, so you may need to be careful not to eat too much. It is recommendation to get approximately 30 to 35% of your calories from fat.
Q: What Are Trans Fats? A: Fats in foods are made up of four different types of fatty acids - polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, saturated and trans. Trans fats are found naturally at low levels in some animal-based foods, but can also be formed when liquid oils are made into semi-solid fats like shortening and hard margarine.
Q:Where Do Trans Fats Come From? A: Small amounts of trans fat (generally 2-5% of the fat content) are naturally present in foods such as dairy products, beef and lamb. Some liquid vegetable oils such as canola and soybean, and fish oils, can also contain small amounts of trans fats, which can be formed during the commercial refinement of these oils. These oils may contain up to 2.5% trans fatty acids, but are also important sources of the essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Trans fats can also be formed when manufacturers use a chemical process that turns liquid oil into a semi-solid form, like shortening and margarines. The process is referred to as “partial hydrogenation.” Fats and oils that are solid or semi-solid at room temperature have advantages for food production. They are more stable and break down less easily under conditions of high temperature heating. These properties make them better for frying. Products made with these fats also have a longer shelf life than if made with liquid oils.
Q: Why Are Trans Fats A Health Concern? A: Science shows that consuming either saturated or trans fat raises the blood levels of the so-called ‘bad’ cholesterol (serum LDL-cholesterol). LDL-cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease. In addition to raising ‘bad’ cholesterol, trans fat also reduces the blood levels of the so-called ‘good’ cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol). HDL-cholesterol protects against heart disease.
Q: How Much Trans Fat Is Too Much? A: The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended that the total amount of trans fats consumed per day should be less than 1% of your daily energy intake.
Q: What Does The Term Hydrogenated Mean? A: The term hydrogenated comes from the term hydrogenation which is a chemical process where hydrogen is added to the carbon-carbon double bonds of unsaturated fats. The process results in the saturation of the carbon atoms of the double bonds, meaning that each carbon atom has four other atoms attached to it. Q: What Is The Difference Between Partial Hydrogenation And Full Hydrogenation? A: Oils can undergo partial and/or full hydrogenation to convert the liquid oil into a semi-solid or solid fat. When certain oils such as vegetable oils are partially hydrogenated, some of the naturally occurring cis double bonds are converted to trans double bonds. As such trans fats are produced. When oils are fully hydrogenated saturated fats are produced. February 2013 |

I Heart Valentine’s Day

e see and hear about hearts everywhere. A long time ago, people even thought that their emotions came from their hearts, maybe because the heart beats faster when a person is scared or excited. Now we know that emotions come from the brain, and in this case, the brain tells the heart to speed up.

As you work out, the demand for oxygen in your muscles increases (thus the name: aero-bic activity). To deliver it, the heart supplies more blood by pumping more often (it raises the beat per minute ratio). Keeping track of this elevation and acquiring the by: Natascia skills required to manipulate the Paolucci Professional Fitnessheartbeat can be helpful and is Coach always safer when exercising. For Sunday athletes, it is the guarantee of an effective workout, regardless of the goal (leisure, lower hypertension, lose weight etc…) For the Rest-Of-The-Week sportsman (and woman), it is also the indispensable means to observe, record and use workout data to further improve without danger. Indeed, it is generally agreed that the energy efficient zone lies between 60 and 70% of your personal maximum heart rate. At this stage you burn a little fat but most importantly you re-energize your muscles (recommended for recovery training). Then, the aerobic zone, between 70 and 80%, improves the cardiovascular system while burning more fat. With time, your heart will strengthen and be able to perform the same task in less beats, this is when you should challenge yourself again. Last but not least, the anaerobic zone, between 80 and 90%, develops your lactic acid system.
tions (+2 to 4 bpm). The Karvonen equation can partially remedy to this inflexibility by using the resting heart rate (personal to each individual) as such: max rate – resting rate x zone percentage + resting rate. For instance, keeping the previous example (assuming the person has a 70 bpm rate at rest): Zone 1 is between: 189 – 70 x 0.6 + 70 = 141 bpm and 189 – 70 x 0.7 + 70 = 153 bpm Zone 2 is between: 153 bpm and 189 – 70 x 0.8 + 70 = 165 bpm Zone 3 is between: 165 bpm and 189 – 70 x 0.9 + 70 = 177 bpm. In addition, as the rate slows with the improvement of the cardiovascular system during effort, the resting rate lowers, enabling the equation to remain adjusted to optimal target zones. Nevertheless, these numbers remain highly subjective. You know yourself best: do not over do it. It is also important to notice that all types of activities are not de facto good for the heart. For those with a condition, the best is to use interval training combining regular effort and lower intensity effort (instead of regular and high intensity), i.e. run normally for 3 minutes then walk briskly for 1 minute. Also, prefer sports that involve a lot of muscles at once and avoiddistance running and unusual high intensity effort. Always warm up (otherwise, you could increase the release of adrenaline to your heart)!

Percentage of what exactly? I hoped you would ask. This is a complicated issue. As most people already know it, there is the rough estimate of the maximum heart rate found by subtracting your age to 220. That is, if you are 31, then your maximum heart rate is 220-31= 189 beats per minute. As such, the first zone lies between 189 x 0.6 =113 and 189 x 0.7 =132 bpm. The second zone lies between 132 and 189 x 0.8 = 151 bpm. Eventually, the third zone lies between 151 and 189 x 0.9 = 170 bpm. Unfortunately, this does not take into account most of our individual specificities and ends up being a poor guide, up to 25 bpm away from accuracy. Among the many factors affecting heart rate, the most common are dehydration (+7.5 bpm), heat/humidity (+10 bpm), altitude (+10 to 20 bpm) and biological varia-
Most importantly: feel well, while exercising. Remember that you decided to work out to feel better, not worse… Unlike what the poem you just received states, unlike what your Romeo whispered to your ear, unlike what the commercial for the new chocolate box sings on your TV… you do not feel much with your heart. You make blood flow with your aortic pump and you feel with your nervous system. And since you cannot use your heart to think, think more of your heart.
Lovely greetings from your fitness coach, Natascia

For The Love Of Chocolate! Valentine’s Day is traditionally remembered as the day for celebrating love, which typically means giving and receiving delicious treats and desserts. Chocolate seems to be the favorite choice for many. There are three main types of chocolate: dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and white chocolate, which are different due to the type and amount of ingredients.
by: Dr. Sameh Mohsen
Registered Dietitian & Nutrition Therapist
Many tout about the health benefits of chocolate, however the calories can quickly add up so portion control is essential. The predominant fat in chocolate is saturated fat. However, research studies have indicated that the type of saturated fat found in chocolate along with a healthy diet does not increase cholesterol levels, which is good news for us all. In fact, some studies have shown that a small amount of dark chocolate can maintain heart health and support healthy blood vessels.
Research points to flavanols, which are antioxidant compounds that come from extracts of the cocoa bean that have been associated with supporting heart health. In general, the percentage of cacao can be an indicator of the flavanol content of a chocolate. For example, a 70% cacao chocolate will be higher in flavonol antioxidants compared with a 50% cacao, which is one reason you typically see dark chocolate being promoted. Generally, for the most flavanol antioxidants, choose a natural cocoa that is higher in cacao content. If you’re dining out this Valentine’s Day, there are often a variety of chocolate desserts from which to choose. Look for bite-size dessert options and desserts served with fresh fruit or berries, such as dark chocolate-covered strawberries, fruit salad with chocolate accents, or an individual chocolate soufflé cake. You can also share a dessert with your dining companion, take part of your dessert home, and/or adjust your caloric intake at other meals that day. As part of your healthy diet and active lifestyle, celebrate Valentine’s Day with a small chocolate treat. It not only tastes good, but may also be a source of heart healthy antioxidants to your diet.

Chickpeas + Red Peppers More Energy
1 out of 5 women doesn’t get enough energy-boosting iron. But eating more iron-rich food won’t do much if your body can’t process it. The kind of iron that comes from plant foods is difficult for our bodies to absorb. So all that iron from beans like chickpeas goes to waste? Not if you add some delish red peppers. The vitamin C in the scarlet veggie acts as a key and unlocks plant-based iron so your blood cells can get to it. Simply toss in roasted red pepper when making homemade hummus (or use red pepper as your primary dipping vehicle), and top salads with red peppers and chickpeas.

Spinach + Avocados Better Vision
Spinach, orange and avocado salad
Spinach is packed with lutein and vitamin A, which are both amazing eye protectors. Avocado not only supplies even more lutein and A but also delivers the healthy fats your body needs to soak up these nutrients. So top quesadillas and tacos with spinach instead of shredded iceberg, and then add the guac. Or mix up a spinach salad with avocado dressing (puree chunks of avocado with lemon juice, olive oil, and your favorite seasonings, even a simple combo like garlic, salt, and pepper).

Smoother Skin
Lycopene, a powerful antioxidant found mostly in tomatoes, can help prevent sun damage. But for supple skin, don’t eat them plain. First coat them in olive oil. The healthy fats in this Mediterranean staple allow lycopene to be better absorbed by your body. And olive oil has its own skin-saving secrets. A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that people who take in more olive oil are less likely to have wrinkles, possibly because it protects against the oxidative stress that causes skin to age. These two foods were destined to be eaten together in Italian dishes such as bruschetta or Caprese salad. Less PMS
Fried eggs, peas and broccoli breakfast
If you suffer from a major case of the crankies every month, relief could be as easy as a trip to certain supermarket aisles. Women who downed the most calcium and vitamin D were 30 to 40% less likely to suffer from PMS crabbiness. Two foods to reach for? Broccoli and eggs. Broccoli boasts one of the most easily absorbed forms of calcium found in food, while eggs are one of nature’s best sources of vitamin D. Pair up these two foods in a broccoli frittata or an omelet.

Better Digestion
Your gut is home to more than 400 kinds of bacteria, some friendly, others not so much. When the bad bugs outnumber the good ones, things slow down digestively and your bowels become, sluggish. Yogurts that are specially designed for digestive health can help by providing probiotics, good-for-you bacteria that get things moving again. But you can’t just eat those buggers and forget about them. Probiotics need to feed on prebiotics (specialized fibers found in foods like flaxseed) to survive and thrive. When you eat them together, you restore and then maintain the healthy balance in your belly. It doesn’t get any easier than this: Sprinkle a tablespoon of ground flaxseed onto your probiotic yogurt. To dress it up, make a fruit and yogurt parfait with flaxseed granola to add some crunch.

A Stronger Immune System
It’s hard to find a food that packs more infection-fighting vitamin A than sweet potatoes. But getting A without enough zinc, found in meats like chicken, beef is like trying to start a fire without a match. You need zinc to metabolize and carry vitamin A throughout your body. You won’t be able to use that A if you don’t have enough zinc to get it where it needs to go. So microwave a sweet tater and top it with some precooked chicken and cheese, serve up sweet potato fries (baked, of course) as a side with roast chicken, or seek out chicken and sweet potato soup recipes.

A Trimmer Tummy
When you down some pasta, are you hungry a few hours later? Try tossing it with some vinegar. Vinegar’s acetic acid slows down how quickly you digest and absorb glucose from starchy foods, so your blood sugar rises and falls more gradually. That helps control hunger, so you’re less likely to overeat later. Adding two tablespoons of vinegar to a starchy dish can slash postmeal blood-sugar surges by 20%. Toss whole-wheat pasta with olive oil and balsamic, or shake up your pasta salad by experimenting with flavored vinegars. Pasta with balsamic vinegar and tuna

Green tea is a primo source of cancer-fighting catechins. But while these nutrients may be tough on cancer cells, they’re total wimps in your stomach only 20% survive the digestive process and make it out to your body to do it any good. A Purdue University study found that squeezing lemon juice into your green brew toughens up catechins, boosting the number you digest up to 13 times. For even more cancer protection, stir in sugar (a teaspoon contains only 16 calories). The sweet stuff morphs catechins into a form that’s three times easier to absorb.

LOVE
YOURSELF
Before somebody loves you!
How many times we have heard this phrase? I guess too many times. So much that we don’t even think about it anymore. It simply goes in one ear and out the other, but let’s not let it do so this time. What is love? Can you show us what love is?
We are all created to be unique individuals. Nobody else in the world is exactly the same way you are. We are lovable regardless of our body size, shape, or colour. So, accept your individuality. What is important is the inside.
Here is a little task. Imagine that you can’t talk and all you can do is express yourself through your body. How would you express yourself to show us love? What would your facial expression be like at that time? We can all transmit anger, greed and generosity nonverbally, but it is more difficult to show love. Dancers probably can do it best. They know how to use their body to tell us what is in their mind via dance.
All too often, we allow somebody else’s thoughts to shape our perspective of ourselves. Somebody might say, “I want to lose 5 kg, I am fat.” Can you see that it is not your thought, it is not your decision to lose weight, but for some reason we take it personally and the thought stays with us. We start brewing negative body obsession, which leads us to emotional and spiritual pain. We need to learn how to detach ourselves from this negative thinking. Don’t let others create negative thoughts about yourself. Don’t let others influence the unique person you are. Stay strong and love your self just the way you are. We need to develop the power to tolerate. With the power to tolerate, we can remain peaceful and happy.

Love is a state of our mind and soul. We all want to experience love for our own reason. Probably because it makes us kinder or it makes us complete. For a lot of people love means a relationship with somebody. That somebody should actually be you. Love starts from a relationship within yourself. We need to first love ourselves. How can we develop this state of mind, one that says “I am Love”? 72 |
| February 2013
Some people find the love for themselves whenever they achieve a goal. For example, by making money, becoming slim or finding a new friend. But love from within should be unconditional. It does not matter how much your weight is. It is your wish to look like a magazine cover but it is only a cover. It is only a costume that has been reshaped and photoshopped to depict a picture of what someone else determines to be important.
“Love yourself first and

Once you accept yourself, your shape, the way you look, the freedom comes. It is an amazing state of mind. It is the best love you can have, the love for yourself. How do we enrich this condition? Some people follow a religion, some people surround themselves with positive people, while others are lucky enough not even have to think about it because the question of accepting themselves never appears. Their parents, family, and friends never asked them to look differently than they already are. This is unconditional love.
we are, what we want, and we are often influenced by others. For now, let’s take 5 minutes to practice yoga. Pay attention to your breathing. You can lie on the floor and imagine that there is a beautiful flower inside you. With each inhalation the flower slowly opens more and more until finally you realise that the beautiful flower is you. Do you have that smile?
Loving yourself does not mean we have to give up our goals. It does not mean that we have to stop going to the gym. In fact, it is the opposite. Loving and ing yourself will lead you to discover a lot more trust, power and belief in who you are, so much that it will allow you to achieve more than you thought you could. Be realistic, forgive yourself when things don’t work the way you envisioned them to be and don’t be obsessed anymore with trying to be what others think you should be. When you love yourself you can easily share that love with somebody else, but you first must have it within before you give it out. You can’t give something you don’t have. Find the love within yourself, open up your heart, make some space for others, and you’ll discover love within and all around. Living with a closed heart limits our emotional and spiritual growth.
Let’s step backwards and talk about the peaceful mind. There is something magical about the word “Yoga!” It is calling you to find the divinity within yourself. Yoga helps you to look within yourself. Sometimes we get lost in our daily lives. There are too many things going on at times that we forget who February 2013 |

Love & Relationships

Let Marriage Become The Path To
Personal Enlightenment Why is it that being in a long lasting relationship is so difficult to many of us? Why is it that we struggle so much to obtain the perfect marriage and why is it that we always end up being disappointed or disillusioned? Whenever you have an idea in your head of what a perfect marriage should be like, the relationship is bound to fail sooner or later. Why? You are having a relationship with an idea instead of the person with whom you are sharing your life. Ideas are only concepts and not the reality and they prevent you from seeing the true person in front of you. Naturally, this leads to frustration and pain, which often results in a crisis from which there is always a lesson to learn.
The Decision-Making After several years together, your marriage has turned into a relentless series of bitter arguments, but you’re not certain if you should try to reconcile or finally end the relationship. All of us have had these kinds of experiences, times when we have to decide something and we just don’t know what to do. When we can’t make up our minds, it’s 76 |

because of our minds, or what we call “the voice in our head.” Many people don’t even know they have this voice. But it’s talking away, creating a neverending inner monologue. Sometimes the voice is even engaged in a dialogue, because it splits into two and you start talking to yourself. During tough choices, this voice isn’t very helpful. Often it criticizes, keeping a running commentary about you
and all the things you did wrong or you just didn’t do. It criticizes others as well. The voice in your head also creates a huge amount of problems that aren’t really problems. They’re just things that haven’t happened yet, things that could happen tomorrow or next week. Listening to unreal problems has another name: worrying. That’s what the voice in your head does. It agonizes, and you can no longer sense the joy of life. If it runs out of other ideas, that voice in your head then turns to complaining. Now imagine that that voice inside your head suddenly stops. You realize, wow, it’s so beautifully quiet. This is exactly what you need to make an effective choice. You need to be present. You need to be free
of anything other than what is happening now. Ultimately, choosing one way (activity) or the other doesn’t matter. It’s not important what you do, it’s how you do it, the state of consciousness that you bring to the process.
The Drama Created By Our Ego Only few of us realize or notice that any argument or disagreement in our relationship is basically our egos clashing in a continuous play for power. All the drama that we either create or take part in is generated by our ego, which is the mastermind behind the voice in our head. Vanity and pride are what most of us tend to think of when we think of ego, but ego is much more than an overinflated sense of self. It can also turn into feelings of inferiority or self-hatred because ego is any image you have of yourself that gives you a sense of identity, and that identity derives from the things you tell yourself and the things other people have been saying about you that you’ve decided to accept as truth. The ego loves to strengthen itself by complaining about a situation you find yourself in, something that is happening right now but “shouldn’t be,” and even about yourself. When this happens, the ego has you in its grip. You don’t have thoughts; the thoughts have you and if you want to be free, you have to understand that the voice in your head has created them and the irritation and frustration you feel is the emotional response to that voice. The trick, of course, is to work to free ourselves from this voice that is dictating reality.
Being Tortured By The Past Whenever we experience a crisis in our relationship it’s quite normal to be overwhelmed by feelings. Again it’s important to be aware that any feelings we have are a bi-product of our thoughts. The seriousness of a situation is always depending on how we perceive it and our perception is based on norms and values in the society we were brought up in. Whatever feelings that are attached to a given situation whether it’s guilt, remorse or regret or feelings of betrayal, denial and mistrust, they are all led by the voice of our ego, that repeatedly like to remind you of your discontent, unhappiness and insufficiency. So let go of the past to see if you can catch the voice in the head. Whenever you notice that voice you will also realize that you are not the voice, but the one who is aware of it. You are that awareness disguised as a person. Yes. The moment you become aware that you have certain kinds of thoughts in your head, there’s already that awareness arising. When you see the difference between your voice and the reality of the situation, that’s the beginning of awakening. This is often a moment, a flash that sizzles and disappears. Initially you still lose yourself again, and the old thoughts arise, but gradually, you gain awareness, and the dysfunctional thoughts subside.
It’s a gradual transition, this bringing in of your awareness, because the ego doesn’t want to change. It doesn’t want to disappear, so it will give you plenty of reasons why you cannot be present. Awareness is the beginning of becoming free of the ego because then you realize that your thoughts and the negative emotions they produce are dysfunctional and unnecessary.
Finding Yourself What are you true to, yourself or your relationship? If you choose the relationship you will forget about yourself, you cannot serve two “masters”: context and content; when you serve context, which is the relationship, your will forget all about content, which is who you really are, and without content there is no context. When we focus more on the other person than ourself, we become unbalanced, vulnerable and anxious and we will manically try to change the other person to regain balance and peace. Find your true self by being conscious and aware. Any mistakes we make in life come from not being conscious of who we truly are and what we truly need. In retrospect we wonder why we acted the way we did and inflicted pain and grief on the ones we love the most, but all lessons in life comes from a state of unawareness, which is why we need the lesson to become aware and grow as spiritual being.
“Can
you be aware of your own presence? Not the thoughts that you’re having, not the emotions that you’re having, but the very presence of your very being?” You become aware of your own presence by sensing the entire energy field in your body that is alive. And that is the totality of your presence. You know that no matter what’s going on, all the trials and difficulties and challenges we all have from time to time in our life, there is a space that you can go to and if you can go to that space, that’s where your strength, your true strength, lies. That’s where your true creativity, your power and your ability to be authentically yourself lies. And that’s where you will realize that the quality of a relationship lies in the ability to accept the other person, respect each other’s differences and give each other space to be what they really are. Mother & Child
Dealing With Your Premature Baby Babies born before the 37th week of gestation are considered premature and are sometimes referred to as “preemies.” Premature newborns have increased risk of complications. The risks increase the earlier the child is born.
Do premature babies need special care? Yes, babies who are born prematurely may need special care during their first 2 years, especially if they were very small at birth (less than 1.7 kg). They are not fully equipped to deal with life in our world. Their little bodies still have underdeveloped parts that include the lungs, digestive system, immune system and skin. Thankfully, medical technology has made it possible for preemies to survive the first few days, weeks or months of life until they are strong enough to make it on their own. You may find your baby’s behavior difficult to understand at first. This can cause worry and upset, but as the weeks go by, you will begin to understand your baby more and they will get better at making their needs known.
Many premature babies: • Prefer less noise and need a calm quiet life • Find it harder to calm and comfort themselves • Tend to be more time consuming to look after
Always use your baby’s adjusted age to judge their abilities. You can help your baby control his/her movements by: • Holding their arms and legs close to their body • Moving them slowly and gently • Being quiet and calm with them • In premature babies, the senses (hearing, touching, seeing) often develop faster than the baby’s ability to control their muscles. Your baby may seem slow at gaining control of the movement of their head or ability to hold objects, but learn quickly to react to sights and sounds - signs of healthy development.
Observe how your baby breathes & observe their skin color. Breathing patterns and the skin color of premature babies can change quickly and without warning. Watch your baby and get to know their usual breathing pattern and “normal” coloring. Knowing their usual behavior will help you spot any problems. Any time you’re concerned about your baby’s breathing or color, call your doctor.
Sleeping As with all babies, your premature baby will seem to have bursts of fast development and other times when nothing much seems to change. If this is a worry, ask your doctor about it, but remember: • You can’t push your baby to develop before they are ready • Don’t try to force them into activities when they are tired or not in the mood • Remember that pushing them will just upset both of you • Give them your time and support • Focus on their progress. Unless there is a problem which may need intervention, years from now it may not matter whether they began walking at 12 or 20 months of age 78 |

• All babies, including premature babies, should be put to bed on their backs, not on their stomachs. Use a firm mattress and no pillow. Sleeping on the stomach and sleeping on soft mattresses may increase your baby’s risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), which is the sudden and unexplained death of a baby who is younger than 1 year old (usually while the infant is asleep, which is why it is also called “crib death”). • Your baby will do more sleeping than anything else during their first weeks at home. At first, your baby may sleep 15 to 22 hours a day. • Premature babies tend to have long sleep sessions and short wakeful periods. Your baby may come home from the hospital with their days and nights mixed up.
A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.
Agatha Christie
• Think about how different the baby’s sleeping area is at home from what it was like in the hospital.
If your baby has trouble sleeping: • Try using a night light and play the radio softly • Turn down the extra noise and light slowly to help your baby get used to the new sleeping area • When feeding them during the night, keep their attention on eating and don’t play with them • Remember that when your baby reaches an adjusted age of 6 to 8 months, they should be able to sleep through the night.
Crying • Your premature baby may not cry much at first. Crying will probably start as you get closer to the original due date (adjusted age of 0 months). • Your baby’s first periods of crying may be short. They may be easily comforted by a soft touch or something to suck on. As your baby grows, they may cry more often. • In a way, crying is a good sign of your baby’s normal development. Crying may tell you that your baby is hungry, uncomfortable, or tired. • Try to learn what their cries mean. By responding to their cries, you help your baby develop a feeling of trust and a sense that others understand them. • Sometimes, comforting a crying baby is hard. Long
periods of crying may be a sign that a baby is sick or in pain. If your baby cries for an unusually long time, you should call your doctor or nurse. Excessive crying uses up too many calories, can exhaust the baby, and may interfere with breathing and growth. • As premature babies develop, they become easier to comfort. With time, they learn to calm themselves. • Fussing and crying generally reach a peak at 3 to 4 months adjusted age. As your baby gets older, they will probably cry less, and their periods of sleep will become more regular. • If your baby is a “difficult” sleeper, ask a friend to baby-sit for you occasionally so that you can have a well-deserved break. This is very important for you.
Talk with your doctor about feeding your baby. Your doctor may recommend vitamins, iron and a special formula if the baby is bottle-fed. Vitamins are often given to premature babies to help them grow and stay healthy. Your baby also may need extra iron because premature babies often do not have as much iron stored in their bodies as full-term babies. After about 4 months of taking iron drops, your baby will have about the same amount of iron as a full-term baby. Your doctor may want your baby to take iron drops for a year or longer. The Color Red! Positive connotations of the color red: Passion, strength, energy, love, sex, excitement, leadership, masculinity, power and prestige
Negative connotations of the color red: Danger, fire, gaudiness, blood, war, anger, revolution, radicalism, aggression and stop
To test the idea that wearing red makes a woman sexier and to see if the “red-sex link” is real, a study was conducted by Andrew Elliot and Daniela Niesta of the University of Rochester and the results showed that men found women wearing red more attractive and more sexually desirable than other women. But beware! There are good times to wear red and bad times to wear red; context is important.
Red is the color most associated with the Soviet Union during communist reign. The red sole is the trademark look of Christian Louboutin’s shoes. In the last decade, Louboutin’s red soles have become a sort of visual shorthand that signals a woman’s high economic status and power.
In medieval Europe, red was worn by kings, cardinals, and nobility. In classic Rome, the most powerful men were called the coccinati, meaning the “ones who wear red.” And in the late 12th century, the Christian church adopted the color red as a symbol of authority and assumed the emblem of a red cross against a white background.
The “red carpet” is only rolled out during special events (e.g. Oscars), and only the most prestigious individuals are allowed to walk on it.
In England, red phone booths and red double decker buses are national icons. Standard British pillar boxes (mail boxes) have been painted red since 1874.
Red band in the Egyptian flag represents the period before the 1952 Revolution, which was marked by bloodshed and unrest.

Sublime Sushi at Saki Lounge Fairmont Heliopolis & Towers
Great food deserves great ambience! Softly lit plants surround the tables and perimeter, water features tinkle pleasantly as a backdrop to the conversation from the spaciously set candlelit tables. At night the world outside stays behind the darkened floor-to-ceiling windows, which during the day flood the lounge with warmth and natural light through the atrium. The Saki Lounge is classic sushi, pure and simple. There is no cooked food, no teppanyaki, nothing sizzles and flames at the side of the tables. This is the vision of Fairmont Executive chef Alistair Carter and his ‘Sushi Master’ Angelo, both for the extensive a la carte menu and the ‘all you can eat’ for 199LE between 6pm and midnight on a Wednesday, when we visited. Alistair said: “Anyone, any restaurant can say they do sushi. But they’re wrong. Sushi has to be done properly; you need the finest and freshest products and a chef who understands the importance of the produce and knows where to get the finest and the freshest. We have Angelo, and he is perfect for the role. He loves his job.” ‘Sushi Master’ Angelo, born in the Philippines but with a Japanese father, has immersed himself in the intricate, delicate and precise world of sushi for the past 13 years, working through the Far East and Middle East and is now in his second spell at Fairmont. On our visit he was just one month into his role after previously being at the Sheraton in 2005. Angelo’s artistic qualities shine through his buffet ‘specials’ - the Yin and Yang of half salmon and half tuna rolls; the intricate ‘casino chip’; nori balls filled rice and caviar, wasabi and the tiny twisty parcels of pickled ginger - the perfect ‘palette cleanser’ between dishes. Then there are his delicate, mini-triangle multi-layered rice ‘sandwiches’ with salmon and tuna. “But these are my favorite” beams Angelo pointing to the crunchy roll of deep fried salmon, cream cheese and avocado. They quickly became my favorite too. The a la carte menu features over a dozen types of seafood as nigiri or sashimi, including isebi (lobster), jka (squid), hamachi (yellow tail) and tako (boiled octopus) and also in combination dishes. We tried it and we absolutely loved it! Make sure to try their deep fried banana spring roll and molten chocolate cake, it’s heaven served on a plate!
Saki Sushi Lounge is open 7 days a week from 2:00 PM - 12:00 AM; located at Fairmont Towers Lobby. I
n the past few years, I have been both fortunate enough to find love twice and also fortunate enough to have lost those loves as well. After much heart ache, many sleepless nights and working through bitterness, despair and a mourning period, I have emerged out of the other end a much stronger being and with a clarity about the beauty that can exist in love and healthy relationships. Of course at the time of the heart ache all one really does is wallow in our misery, however once the healing has done it’s magic and clarity replaces the fogginess of despair, one is able to see that sometimes you’re simply only meant to love and learn and that’s ok.
By: Deana Shaaban Fashion Designer
Of the many things I have learned, I think the most important is to marry your best friend. They are the ones who will understand every part of you and will love you for exactly who you are. You have to be with someone who understands your crazy moments, your gentle moments, the moments where you are irritated and agitated for no reason and responds to them in a way that’s suitable for you. I’ve learned that you must have the same values because when all the excitement and adrenaline filled nights of running off together fade, what you will be left with is a value system that either intertwines or is a great source of tension. Now I’m not talking about liking the same food or sleeping at the same times, I’m talking about an agreement about the things that we believe in and define ourselves by. Through years of marriage you will go through difficulties and hardships like you never knew were possible and boy, if there is not respect, dedication, persistence and a willingness to work through whatever the issue may be then the journey will end in an inevitable parting of ways. You need to have a system for how you are going to express yourselves because when fight time comes and everyone decides they want to yell at the top of their lungs, there needs to be a line that is never crossed. Define what that line is for your relationship and then make sure that neither of you cross it. Finally and most importantly, take your egos out of the relationship for they have no place there. People’s egos are the number one reason relationships end. Our ego is what prevents us from admitting we’re wrong when we are and it is what causes us to do hurtful and sometimes malicious things to the people we love. The key here is, to keep it simple. Admit you’re wrong when you are, and you obviously must be sometimes because we are all human and making mistakes is part of what defines us as such. Once apologies are made then move on. Love is not merely a feeling, because how you feel only matters to you. What truly matters is what you do to the people you say you love and how you treat them. Falling in love is merely a starting point, it’s everything after that determines the course that your love will take. It’s work and effort and a lot of it at that, but care for it and nurture it and it will grow to be the most beautiful you ever created in your life. 90 |

SARCASTIC STUBBORN
BUT LOYAL
Element: Air Positive traits: Witty, clever, humanitarian, inventive, original, progressive and independent Negative traits: Stubborn, unemotional, sarcastic, rebellious, uncompromising, temperamental and aloof Compatible with: Aries, Gemini, Libra and Sagittarius Incompatible with: Pisces, Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio and Capricorn Likes: Fame, change, eccentricity, surprises, living within their means, fun with friends, fighting for causes, helping others, and intellectual conversation Dislikes: Emotion, intimacy, show-offs, taken for granted, violence, limitations, being lonely, broken promises, dull or boring situations, and people who disagree with them Famous Aquarius: Oprah Winfrey, Wolfgang Mozart, Jennifer Aniston, John Travolta and Bridget Fonda
It might be a good time to make a thorough scrutiny of the real you, an honest assessment of your face, figure, health and assets and seek to implement a make-over where necessary. The truly intimate and personal you, needs to be examined minutely and where there is room for improvement, positive action be taken. Aquarius in a Nutshell Aquarius is the sign of visionaries, unconventionality and intellectual independence. Aquarians are the people who deviate from the crowd and go their own way. They are always after intellectual stimulation, constantly discovering something new, forming new opinions and stubbornly traveling their way regardless of what other people think. They are filled with paradoxes, they are interested in the opposite ends of the spectrum, they like to experience both sides and see both opinions as they formulate new ideas with their forward thinking, active mind. They are verbally skilled and very witty, they observe people and learn how to interact with others through observation. They can be masters of manipulation justifying anything they do or think. As a result, they can deal with any type of personality and adapt to any situation. They welcome change because boredom is their enemy. Aquarius in Love On the positive side, they seek stability in life and hence you can be assured of a long and fruitful relationship with them. They generally have a pleasant personality and they will never let you get bored. They are honest and loyal and hope for the same in return. On the negative side, they can seem to be very detached at times. They are unpredictable and can give their partners a tough time figuring them out. They get hurt at trifles. They require their space even when in a relationship and attempts to rein them in only alienates them further. They are not very expressive especially in public which can be mistaken for lack of interest by their lover. Aquarius and Business Aquarians like to do something useful with their lives, mixing that with their amazing way with people, they make excellent politicians and social workers/psychologists. They are progressive thinkers, great at forming new ideologies and theories and very good at doing any kind of research. Aquarians’ one downfall in the business world is the attention to detail; they like the grand ideas and massive plans and can make them happen, but the mundane day to day repetitive details cause them to procrastinate. Aquarius and Friendship Beneath the detached, unemotional exterior lies a kind hearted friend that will go out of their way to help another. They love to make people laugh and cheer people up and it makes them feel good to make others feel good. They are very unconventional and always full of excitement, an Aquarius friend always makes life fun. 94 |
