A SUM MER
DIARY
ack in the days, summer was a time to relax, catch up with friends, and spend some quality time with the family. Holidays were all about endless joy, good times, and memories in the making. But in this day and age, summer breaks as we know them have changed dramatically. With the holiday fever on its peak, and the Instagram feed being flooded with pictures, I instantly had a flashback and couldn’t help but compare between now and the good old days.
Not so long ago, beach time meant messy hair, shorts and flip-flops. We were simply carefree, not bothered over how picture-perfect we look, but rather focused on making the best out of the moment we live. Things were way simpler and truly meaningful right until happiness has become measured based upon how others see our lifestyle. Picturesque backdrop scenery, sparkling glasses of fine wine, unicorn and flamingo floater, bronzed skin; and if your holiday photos don’t look anything like that, you begin to question whether you had any good time at all. We travel half way across the planet to remote getaways, but in fact we are not remote at all, we’re constantly urged to document, post, and share and let everyone know we’re having a great time. The moment has become rarely lived, and highly pretentious. Our generation adopted the habit of constant comparing, of feeling that nothing is ever good enough. The simple things that used to make us happy, no longer feel the same anymore and if your holiday isn’t somewhere in a scenic hideaway while you sip on exotic coconuts and pineapples, you don’t count it as one. I am in no place to preach nor judge the way some people choose to spend their summer –including myself when I can’t help but post snaps of how my break looks like. But all I’m trying to do is merely advise you to disconnect for a while and appreciate the moment, to live truly and fully, and to relish life up to your own standards and not anyone else’s Happy Holidays! 8 | JUNE 2019

Under the Slogan “Small things make big difference” Orange Egypt boosts its charity campaigns in Ramadan by renovating and refurbishing schools and houses in Upper Egypt villages in cooperation with “Misr El Kheir” and “Ommar Al-Ard” foundations
Under the slogan “Small things make big difference”, Orange Egypt, the leading provider of integrated telecommunications services, has launched two parallel campaigns to renovate and refurbish schools and houses in Upper Egypt in the most needy villages in cooperation with “Misr El Kheir” and “Ommar Al-Ard” foundations. These campaigns are part of Orange’s sustained activities in the field of social responsibility. The campaigns aim to positively affect, change and touch the Egyptians’ lives as it is more than just a campaign but rather a campaign with a cause. The first campaign focuses on the renovation of a number of schools in 6 Egyptian governorates; Aswan, Luxor, Sohag, Assiut, Beni Suef and Minya, in cooperation with Misr El Kheir Foundation. It’s noteworthy that Orange Egypt will be supporting and financing school furniture and will provide them with modern equipment, including devices and computers to grant a quality-learning environment experience for students. Orange Egypt also supported in furnishing the internal and external facades of schools and provided the school uniforms to students in order to help them adapt to school without incurring their families any cost. The second campaign involves a comprehensive renovation of houses in 4 villages in Upper Egypt in cooperation with Ommar Al-Ard Foundation, within the framework of the company’s efforts to support the most needy families in Minya and Beni Suef governorates.
During the Campaign Orange Egypt participated by installing ceiling, walls painting, flooring and providing all facilities including water, electricity, and sanitation. The campaign comes out of Orange Egypt belief in “Satr & Ghata” project, which aims to protect families in the needy villages and keep them warm and safe through the installation of insulation roofs for several houses of various families. “We continue to forge our privileged partnership with institutions that have exceptional experience in community work like Ommar El Ard and Misr El Kheir Foundation to upgrade the standard of Egyptian lives and change it to the better” said Hala Abdel Wadood, Head of Public Relations & Corporate Social Responsibility at Orange Egypt. Abdel Wadood explained that the campaign is a continuation for the promotional campaign launched by Orange under the theme “Small things make big difference”. Orange also extends its deep appreciation to the mega stars Tamer Hosny and Nancy Ajram, who participated out of their belief in the cause of the campaign where it’s not just a regular advertising campaign, but it’s an integrated campaign that supports and encourages the spirit of sharing among the Egyptians. “The two campaigns are just the beginning of many campaigns to be sponsored by Orange Egypt in support to the government patriotic initiative “Dignified Life” that was launched and represented by the Ministry of Social Solidarity”. NATURAL REMEDIES FOR BOUNCY CURLS
THE POWER OF AVOCADOS Avocados are known to be healthy and beneficial for your overall health. They contain a type of fat that helps in providing your curls with the smoothness it needs in addition to accentuating their texture and helping in making them more defined. Besides, Avocadoes are laden with vitamins that stimulate the hair growth, including Vitamin E and Vitamin B. It’s okay to eat avocadoes as a healthy part of your nutrition plan, but to maximize the results, consider applying a mixture to your hair that helps in taming the frizz. Mash a ripe Avocado and mix it with one tablespoon of Honey, two tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and two to three drops of your favorite essential oils to form a smooth paste. Apply this on your hair and scalp and wait for 30 minutes. Rinse and shampoo as usual. MILK IS POTENT Apparently, there are many ways that you can give your curls a natural fix. Milk is there to help with the process as it improves the growth of hair follicles thanks to its protein and casein content. Make a quick mixture using two tbsp. of milk with one egg, 4 tbsp. of extra virgin olive oil, 2 tbsp. of honey, and a medium-sized banana. Blend them all together until you reach a smooth paste then apply evenly all over your hair. Feel free to comb through to distribute the mixture more evenly. Cover your head with a shower cap for 30 minutes before you wash it off. THE MIRACULOUS COCONUT OIL Coconut oil has been the king of all oils when it comes to fixing your hair. Coconut is a deep hydrant which is almost what most of the damaged hairs need to go back to their natural states. Besides, it helps in strengthening the hair when used on a regular basis. The best part about coconut oil is that you can use it as an oil treatment or as a natural leave-in conditioner. No matter what path you decide to walk, your curls will thank you.

A FORMER TENNIS PLAYER, A YOGA INSTRUCTOR AND A SPECIALIST IN FITNESS AND NUTRITION, HOW DID THIS ALL BEGIN? Tennis has always been my dad’s obsession. All my siblings and I started playing tennis at a young age, and next to many other sports, tennis was my biggest passion. I started competing professionally, and travelled all over Asia following my love for tennis and in aspiration to represent my country. My love for sports and everything related was something that I have carried with me everywhere I’ve been. When I came to Egypt, I’ve found myself becoming interested in kickboxing, right until I joined Al Ahly club and went back to playing Tennis. In no time, I was introduced to crossfit and functional training which I fell even more in love with. So, I started focusing on that until I became a coach. Two years later, I discovered another passion -which is now the biggest- in doing Yoga. I decided to learn more about it, and that’s when my journey with Yoga began. As for nutrition, we all know it’s crucial to eat clean when you are an athlete. I used to be obese when I was 14 years old, but my parents helped me lose weight by eating healthy food and training daily. That’s also what created my love for healthy and clean food. Aside from that, being a coach means you should be an idol in the way you lead your life, especially in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This is why I started studying to learn more about nutrition and dug deeper in different cases of obesity. From that point, I took over the nutrition part at Hit Egypt, and started serving our athletes something far beyond than just fitness.
BESIDES FITNESS AND NUTRITION, WE KNOW THAT YOU LOVE PAINTING AS WELL. WHAT ELSE ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? Something that a lot of people don’t know about me is that I used to play the piano and stopped a very long time ago. However, I’m planning to go back to it in the near future. I am also very passionate about cooking and have big dreams about it. Since I grew up fond of painting as my favorite hobby during my years of learning, I do love makeup and experimenting with looks and colors.

BEING MARRIED TO THE COFOUNDER OF HIT, ABDELRAHMAN ABDULLAH, YOU BOTH SHARE SAME INTERESTS. HOW HAS THIS HELPED IN SHAPING YOUR RELATIONSHIP AND YOUR PROFESSIONAL GOALS? Our lives have been shaped into having the same lifestyle, which brought us closer to each other and gave each one of us more insights about the struggles we go through every day and this helped us get through them as a team. First thing, Abdelrahman is a coach and a business owner, which means working full time, morning and night, weekdays and weekends, and rarely takes any vacations. Second thing, he is a competitor and most people might not get how this lifestyle requires a lot of commitment. It means having all of his meals prepped, consistently sleeping early, training on weekends and training on vacations. If both of us didn’t share the
same lifestyle, I wouldn’t have been able to understand its requirements and level of commitment. After a while of knowing him I started to feel that this is actually a blessing! Living our lives differently than other people helped us limit all distractions and focus on what’s really important.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? It is the fact that I can make money out of something I love doing. As much as it can get exhausting and physically demanding, but seeing the outcome and the change I make in peoples’ lives makes it all worthwhile. Serving people gives me a push to do better and makes me immersed in happiness. I believe that we all need someone or something to inspire us every now and then, and also to remind us of our purposes and goals.

THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE, WHEN HAVE YOU FELT MOST CHALLENGED? It was during the time I was starting a whole new life in Egypt, all by myself. It was heartbreaking in every way. I felt defeated and miserable, and spent days and nights crying over what happened to my country and I was devastated for being away from my family, and friends. I tried to pull myself together in order to be able to get back to life and to the things I love. It took me time to adapt, but it also gave me unbelievable strength.
Confetti Collection by Malak El Ezzawy Bracelet & ring by Nefret Jewellery
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST SUCCESS OR ACHIEVEMENT THAT MADE YOU FEEL PROUD OF YOURSELF? Being where I am today.
WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED? Well, knowing that we can’t be 100% motivated most of the time; I always look for new aspirations. My main motivator is success. I aspire to become extraordinary in the things I do, and not just good.
IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE GRANTED THREE WISHES TO COME TRUE IMMEDIATELY, WHAT WOULD YOU WISH FOR? First, I would wish if my family and I can be reunited again and to live together in the same country. I would also wish for my country, Syria, to rise again and shine just like before, and even better. Last, I really wish the day could get longer so I could have more room to do the things that I love.
DEFINE THESE TWO WORDS FROM YOUR OWN PERSPECTIVE: Beauty: I find beauty in strength, for behind every person’s beautiful heart is a strong mind and a soul of a fighter that overcomes struggles, and defeats obstacles. I also believe that beauty is compassion. It is how we treat those around us, how we try to understand people and accept them with their differences. Beauty is knowing how to love and care for those around us. Strength: Strength is reflected in the way we handle ourselves. It lies in how honest and true to ourselves we are. We find ourselves the strongest in how calmly and patiently we deal with challenges, how content we can be in the hardest situations, how peacefully we accept our imperfections, and most importantly strength is in the faith we hold.
A QUOTE OR A MOTTO YOU RELATE TO THE MOST? Don’t get attached to moments, good or bad, they all pass. JUNE 2019 | 29

Mind & Body
KETOGENIC DIET 101 Diets have been surging frequently; some have proven to be of a great impact and others have not. People became too accustomed for new diets to become the latest trends, frequently. Lately, ketogenic diet has been taking the market by storm. It is rather referred to as the Keto diet. Briefly, Keto or ketogenic diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that can help you burn fat more effectively. While this sounds a lot like the Atkins and Dukan diet, this one is slightly different and has been proven to be effective for losing extra body fat and reversing type 2 diabetes.
THE CONCEPT OF THE KETOGENIC DIET
The Keto diet is basically a nutrition plan that allows your body to produces a small fuel molecule known as Ketones which sends your body immediately into a state of ketosis. Ok, we’ll slow down. Our bodies naturally run on glucose that comes from different types of carbs and that’s why we don’t usually burn our body fat effectively. So, when you eat very few carbs along with moderate amounts of protein and high fat, your body starts using fat as its main fuel as it becomes short for glucose supply. Once your liver starts producing a large amount of ketones, your body gets into a metabolic state known as ketosis where it runs on fat instead of glucose, causing a rapid weight loss. Here are simple ways to get into ketosis fast:
RESTRICT CARBS
Probably, that’s rule number one of a Keto diet, it is all that you need to efficiently get into ketosis and burn the extra fats. Following a keto diet differs from low-carbs diets in the amount of carbohydrates you incorporate into your meals plan. In Keto, you strictly go below 20 grams of carbs per day; however, you eliminate starchy carbs altogether. Those 20 gm. are taken indirectly from the vegetables you eat.
EAT ENOUGH FATS
Consuming enough fats is the key to a sustainable diet and a guaranteed fat loss results. It may sound ironic that eating fats help you lose fat, but it makes sense once you learn that your body, that way, run on fat instead of glucose, so it doesn’t need to store them. Besides, fats are perfect for making you feel full and energetic instead of being sluggish and giving up too early.
38 | JUNE 2019
ADD INTERMITTENT FASTING
While this is not important, Intermittent Fasting (IF) can speed up the process of fat loss. Your body tends to produces ketones when it goes for hours without food. Consequently, you get into ketosis quite fast. It’s also recommended for those who want to kickstart their weight loss journey to fast for 16 hours, where you only consume water and herbal teas, and eat for the other 8 hours.
EXERCISE IF POSSIBLE
Exercise is not necessary in Keto diet, yet it can help in burning fat faster as workout helps to deplete your glycogen storages faster. Glycogen is actually the glucose that your body tends to store, so once it is completely depleted, your body gets into ketosis soon enough.
WHAT TO EAT AND WHAT TO NOT EAT:
• All kinds of proteins: meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs. • Vegetables like spinach, zucchini, eggplants, mushrooms, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, olives, and peppers. • Natural fats like butter and heavy cream. • Dairy products: eggs, cheese, almond or coconut milk. • Coffee and tea are allowed, but only use a small amount of regular milk or opt for other milks like coconut and almond, or heavy cream. • Nuts and berries like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries.
AVOID:
• Starchy carbs: pasta, bread, rice, pizza, and pastries • All sugary fruits like apples, bananas, and grapes • Cereals of all kinds • Cakes, chocolates, donuts, and ice creams

Mind & Body
OUR VALUES
VS OUR LIFE BY YASMINE SHAHINE
To achieve your purpose in life, first you have to be aware of your values. Many people think that values are only ethics and morals; they are not! Values are what is important to us, what we “value” and what gives us purpose. Have you ever asked yourself “What do you really value in life”?? Is it honesty, happiness, integrity, power, compassion, flexibility, living a healthy life… and the list goes on. To live in a strong supported happy way we must live by our values. When you make decisions that are not aligned with your values, you will either feel that something is not right or you won’t enjoy any achievements. And no matter how much you try to deny that feeling or suppress it you will always feel uncertain as if you are on a rocky or a shaky ground.
Stop for a moment, bring a piece of paper and write down 5 to 7 things that you really value in life.
Think about it that way; can you build a house without a strong foundation? To build a strong foundation you have to be fully and consciously aware of what your foundation is built on.
You may not be aware but this list is your foundation and the core of everything that you do even from the smallest decisions to the biggest ones;
So take time & think about the life that you are living, your actions, dig deep within yourself, the decisions you make to get you where you are now..
what shall I have for breakfast? pizza or a fruit smoothie?? Or Should I quit my job to start my own business? Now that you aware of your values,
Most people who have achieved great success in their lives say that success was not a result of few major choices, it was the result of huge amounts of small choices made every single day.
40 | JUNE 2019
Now that you have your values in front of you, what does this list mean to your life? Have you noticed that this list shapes almost every decision that you take?
let me tell you another fact…Values Can Change! Once you have really searched deep within yourself to know the values that are shaping your life and decision, you then and as we always say, you always have a CHOICE. It is the choice to make a decision if these values are working for you, supporting your dreams and your life purpose or not. Many times you might need to change your perspectives or to stop taking some matters or ideas for granted. Why? Cause if you don’t own your values, then again you are living out of alignment with who you want to be and you will fall into the same trap again. Remember, values list is a very personal list, someone else’s list might not mean much to you at all and vice versa. Now your next step is to work out what your life purpose is…
Try to create your life purpose in two words if possible; living passionately, valuing time, inspiring others, make difference…Once you have your purpose that are aligned with your values you will know it, it will feel just right. Your purpose should be with you every single day, focus on it, move towards it and your energy should always be outward and forward. You will suddenly notice how opportunities will start jumping in front of you to support your life purpose. Now the positive energy will be spinning around you, in you , out of you and it will really be noticeable However, be aware that almost every day you will get smashed with reasons that will make you question your purpose and your actions. Only if your purpose is strongly grounded by your values then you will know inside out that your purpose is clear.
If you have followed the process honestly and deeply, then trust your values, trust your purpose, which means “TRUST YOURSELF”

Relationships
ARE YOU REALLY IN LOVE OR ARE YOU JUST IN NEED? HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE! BY SARAH KHALED
S
ometimes when we’re lonely or feeling down, we might often form a fantasy of what real love looks like. Though we may paint a pretty picture in our minds, this fantasy isn’t necessarily built on the admirable qualities we truly desire in a partner. Instead, it may be based on gaps we hope to fill one day or mistakes we aim to correct. We may seek a partner whose outpour of compliments submerges the low self-esteem we held at a certain point in life or someone who reminds us of this precious someone in the past.
44 | JUNE 2019
It’s no great surprise that fantasy can lead us to choose romantic partners for the wrong reasons, and even if we choose them for all the right reasons, our devotion to our fantasies can eventually lead us to destroy any real sense of connection. So with all these early defenses quietly operating within each of us, how do we separate honest love from an illusion of connection? How do we separate the want from the need? There’s a difference between being ‘in love’ and being ‘in need.’ We verbally claim our love for our partner and believe to feel this emotion deeply. However, when it comes down to discerning actions, we might be shocked to realize that we only need them. It’s of utmost importance to tell the difference between neediness and love, or else we can end up hurting ourselves and the other person. Love means enjoying the person and their presence. We let them be, and take into account their own personal needs. This is how we ‘want’ another person. Their presence should be an additional joy or blessing in our lives. Nevertheless, when we are in need, we don’t enjoy the person, we enjoy what we take from them. When we constantly take instead of share, we are only focusing on what’s being brought to the table. We might have an unconscious physical, emotional, materialistic, or mental need we expect a partner to honor. Fights ensue when these expectations aren’t met, and that’s when we need to be aware of the imbalance of give and take in love. The best way to stop needing that balance is by lowering our expectations and removing the focus off of our partner. In a needy relationship, we constantly associate our negative emotions with our partners and then start to reflect on the entire situation. Reality is: True love doesn’t know blame and even if it’s our partner’s fault, we need to talk about it calmly and with respect.
Getting used to someone is one thing and getting attached to them is another. Habit is normal and common. When we are in need, we don’t tolerate our partner’s absence. This is why many couples abundantly suffer after breaking up — because of attachment. There is a thin line between missing our partner and feeling empty without them. To feel empty without another person is similar to being addicted to a drug; we don’t healthily operate when the drug isn’t there. We need to share our completeness together by seeing ourselves and our partner as individuals rather than one person. Knowing the difference between wanting someone and needing someone can save you a lot of trouble: • Relationships that are based on needs aren’t healthy: You get into them even if they were harmful for you. Out of need some people get into bad relationships that doesn’t really suit them and then end up with a breakup. • Love ends when the need disappears: As soon as the need disappears, love will end because the relationship was solely based on that need. If for example you got into a relationship just because you were feeling lonely then as soon as your social life becomes good, you will find yourself not needy anymore of the relationship! • The difference between need and love: I am not saying that you could love someone without needing him. In fact all relationships have varying degrees of needs supporting them, however, the higher the percentage of the need in the relationship, the less likely it is to be a healthy one. The best method to stop us from being in need, is to be in love with ourselves first. When we fill our own gaps, our love for another person will be appropriately reliable. We won’t love them just to fill the missing space in our lives. We’ll rather love them for who they are and appreciate what they give themselves, and us. The relationship then becomes a place of sharing. Thus love becomes heightened and unconditional!

CHILD ABUSE
DO PARENTS REALISE WHAT IT REALLY MEANS? BY SHEREEN ELDESSOUKY 46 | JUNE 2019
Parenting behavior is an issue that has generated a great deal of heated debate. At this day and age the typical Egyptian household has changed tremendously in terms of upper middle class sectors. Parents are well educated and have top notch jobs with a high income that generates a good portion of disposable income. As a result, caregivers and nannies have been employed to take the burden off the parents. It is important to note that each culture has different expectations for the behavior of parents and what is and is not accepted as form of child abuse. Let’s define child abuse in a clear coherent manner so that we are all on the same page. Basically, child abuse is maltreatment of children both physically and emotionally. The result of this is clear harm to the child’s health and survival. Emotional abuse revolves around the parent or guardian unable to provide a supportive environment for the child. This includes rejection, discrimination, ridicule, threats and intimidation. In addition, physical forms of hostile treatment. Did you ever think twice about the language you use with your children? Have you ever considered the fact that there may be an element of neglect in your relationship with your child? Neglect is a form of abuse that many do not define as abuse. It is the failure of the parent or guardian to emotionally fulfill the child’s needs. This refers to examples such as not listening to
the child’s feelings, stories or day to day activities. Neglect can even take the form of not providing an adequate nutrition for the child as well as education and shelter. The children we bring to this world are our responsibility, there may be the odd day where fast-food is ordered for fun, but overall have you administered the amount of nutrients and vitamins as an intake? A lot of people do not realize that they may be abusing their child one way or the other. It may not be intended as abuse but ignorance and lack of responsibility can certainly lead parents into that direction. Young mothers and fathers with lack of adequate experience can also be in the same boat. Parents need to spend more time conducting research on tried and tested methods of bringing up children. Children who are abused suffer mental health issues not just physical issues. This will need certain tools to help them cope with stress as well as learning how to be resilient and strong in everyday life. Some children react in other ways by resorting to drugs or alcohol. Other children run away from home and even have some suicidal tendencies. As parents we need to observe our children carefully as well as observe ourselves in the way we treat children on a daily basis. Sometimes, actions we may think are normal reactions or behavoiur from a parent might in fact lead to depression and suicide.
