Bubble
I
have a confession to make - I do envy little kids sometimes; and the happy rainbow colorful unicorn bubbly world they choose to live in, and I can’t help but wonder why I’m no longer living in this world? I believe that the main thing that differentiates kids from grownups is that they focus on the good in this world, and don’t even comprehend the bad; while we, grownups, keep focusing on it.
Now let me ask you this; don’t you think it’s fair to say that grownups live in a bubble as well? But it’s a different kind of bubble. A bubble filled with anxiety, negativity, stereotyping, preconceived judgments, and unmet expectations. Yes I know that life could get really tough sometimes, and that in many cases it’s really hard to keep up with all the mess around us without being affected; however, I do believe that we still have a big say in how we lead our lives. Sadly, many of us believe that being an active mature person requires a certain set of indicators, including but not limited to excess drama and calculated laughter; watching a carefully selected genre of movies that basically reflect the worst in the world; using social media to share every single unfortunate incident, like deaths, explosions, harassments, etc; and last but not least, seeking each and every opportunity to show off their deep perception of every economic and political issue in the world; in addition of course to the” purposeful” daily whining about jobs. I’ve been accused by many people over the years that I live in my own bubble; and even though I don’t really get what exactly the accusation here, I would boldly say that if living in my happy drama-free bubble is a crime, then I’m proudly guilty. Although I can really be overwhelmingly negative sometimes, I still do my best to keep it simple; I believe this a key for keeping a healthy mindset. And I’m not asking you to be passive or childish or anything like that, but I’m just saying that it would really help to let go and keep distance from things that we have no control over. For instance, the way I see it is that if you don’t work in politics and if you’re not a decision maker, why on earth do you let it consume that much of your time? Same goes for other aspects… Bottom line, part of being a grownup is that we are forced to face the not-so-nice reality of the world; yet, this reality should not define you or the way you live. You’re responsible of what you let in your bubble.

The 1800 square foot menswear and womenswear store takes inspiration from the lotus flower; worshipped as a symbol of creation and used throughout apothecary. The newest store plays host to Ted’ Baker’s SS16 clothing and accessory collections for ladies and men, featuring the perfect prints for spring and summer. Tips for Maintaining a Glowing Skin on
Your Big Day!
W
By: Amina Metwally
ith wedding season kicking in and knocking the door, brides to be get overwhelmed with all the wedding preparations. All that dress could really affect their overall skin look and make them look tired. So to avoid that, I give you some tips I gathered from my experience with several brides to take into consideration while preparing for your big day:
1.Facial is a great idea but NOT right before your big day: Getting rid of any black heads, dead skin and tightening your pores are all great, yet if it’s your first time then get it done one month before your wedding day. As this can cause redness, irritation, and horrible breakouts. 2.Makeup trial: It is highly recommended to book a trial makeup session ahead to avoid any further stress on your special day. Make sure you sit with your makeup artist, give him/her their space to come up with the best look for you. You can always show them references for your ideal makeup looks as well, and make sure before he/she leaves that you are comfortable. 3.Hydration: With all the errands that you will be running and trying to finish before your wedding day, please try not to forget to hydrate and eat well. This will reflect directly on your skin.
36 | MAY 2016
4.Beauty Sleep: On the night before your big day, make sure you are relaxed, your bag is packed, and everything is already in place; so that you get to have your beauty sleep and wake up ready for your special day. Last thing you need are those dark circles around the eyes. 5.Private Time: It’s preferable not to invite a lot of people in your bridal suite /room; you don’t want a lot of distractions around. Just make sure you appoint your best friend to pick up calls and give directions or answer any questions if needed. 6.EAT! Don’t forget to eat on your wedding day! You have a long day ahead. And starving yourself would really reflect on your skin and face. And finally relax and try not to freak out on the tiniest details on your big day; no one will remember these tiny details like your napkins or perfect wedding program. Your guests will remember how they felt, and most importantly be mesmerized by how beautiful you look

An Insightful Chat with Magnus Brännström CEO and President of
W
e had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Magnus Brännström, CEO and President of Orilfame, one of the leading Swedish and international beauty companies in the world. Mr. Brännström has recently won the 2016 Bravo Leadership Award, which further emphasizes his outstanding vision and practices, and below he gives us thorough answers to many of the questions that we had in mind… You’ve been part of Oriflame since 1997; can you point out milestones over the years of your experience? When I joined, the company was about 300 million, and now we’re 1.2 billion, but we were at one point we were 1.5 billion; so we’ve gone up and come down a bit. If I would point out milestones, the first one would be in 98 when Russia defaulted, that was a huge challenge to Oriflame. Then another one was in 2004 when we went public; then when the financial crisis happened in 2008 and 2009, we had fantastic run after that. We were winning over everybody in 2009 and 2010. However, after that we faced some challenges mainly because of devaluation and problems in Russia; we’ve lost 1/3 of the turnover at the peak of our company. This was partially compensated by other countries like China, Indonesia, Turkey, and Egypt. However, still it’s a big blow for us to have a large part of our market not performing at this stage. Oriflame Egypt’s most recent campaign is about turning “cosmetics into money” and offering business opportunities to people through direct selling, which is very consistent with Oriflame’s slogan “Your Dreams...Our Inspiration.” Can you elaborate more on that? Does it go beyond the money? I think it doesn’t even start with the money. I think you buy Oriflame product, because you dream of being beautiful; so it starts by meeting

Our most recent star product is “NovAge,” which is a youth-enhancing skincare series, focusing on using natural ingredients through which we could fight aging.
Oriflame has a diversified range of products, do you have a star player? Yes, skincare is the thing for us, because we believe that beauty starts with skin; then there are many varieties including the hair, lips, accessories, etc. Our most recent star product is “NovAge,” which is a youth-enhancing skincare series, focusing on using natural ingredients through which we could fight aging. Can you Elaborate more on “NovAge” line, and what makes it unique? The series is produced in a way that is adaptive to what happens to a woman’s skin during her lifetime. We have something for the young women called “True Perfection”; we have something that
“
this expectation through having products that incorporates the natural ingredients with advanced science and proven results. And this I think is the foundation for our view on our recent campaign in Egypt, “Turning Cosmetics into Money.” It starts with the beauty products, but we’re selling-direct; so we have to provide a good income opportunity, because being a sales person is the toughest job on the planet. So you have to motivate and reward sales people for their efforts.
focuses on the wrinkles for older groups, which is the “Ecollagen,” and then you have the lifting, which is what we call “The Ultimate Lift,” and we have “Time Reversing,” which basically does all of it. We have scientifically worked from the perspective of having it as a routine. We have developed skincare routines before, that’s not new, but now we developed actual products to fit the skincare routine suggested. We start with cleansing, and then you work with the eyes. After that we work on depth, and we have moisturizer for morning protection, as well as the night cream, which basically opens up your pores and reactivates your skin. Being a fully sustainable company is a longterm objective of Oriflame, and many other companies in various industries are moving towards the same objective. In your opinion, why did it become a rising movement? Is it for the sake of competition? I think it’s a bit of both. All the reasons are good. I think I see a difference and evidence that something wrong is going on the planet; I remember that my winters for instance were much colder when I was young. Scientists are saying that we are impacting global warming, so I think there is a wakening for all of us that there is something we have to fight. May 2016 | 39
Secondly, I think there is a very sound economic reason. If we look at the energy usage, I can reduce my distribution to reduce carbon dioxide, but at the same time save money, because I’m actually using the resources more wisely; that would be good business. Also, when you look at the business case of educating your people, using less resources, less water, less logistics, you’ll find that it’s a good business. So as a whole you’ll save more by being sustainable than you think. Moreover, no doubt competition is a factor. There is clearly a bigger wish from consumers to choose sustainable alternatives; of course at this stage all those alternatives are based on the fact that I don’t have to pay more, but we’re also seeing more people saying that sustainability is their no. 1 criteria when buying a product. Consequently, we have all this chemical revolutions, reduction of water waste and resource usage, etc.
What’s next for Oriflame in 2016? We’re focusing on five things at this stage. We’re launching the “NovAge” line; we want to put the skincare routine in the minds of people. The second thing is about income opportunity, and to make sure that it’s effectively communicated. Third, we want to focus on the digital opportunities that we have;

“
I understand that Oriflame’s vision and mission stay the same regardless the region; however, there must be some variations when it comes to the actual implementation. How the process and strategy differ in Egypt in comparison to Oriflame’s mother company in Sweden? As you said vision and mission don’t change; we want to help people both in Sweden and Egypt to fulfill their dreams; strategy, however, differs. Nowadays in Sweden, middle class is living a good life, there is no question about survival or security; therefore, people are not looking for money, but they are rather looking for experience and a chance to work on their own terms. So these factors determine the communication we use and the choices we make there. While now in Egypt, with the current economic situation, we still have a lot of Egyptians who live day by day, so the money aspect is more important in Egypt than in Sweden, and therefore we focus on the concept of “Turning cosmetics into money”. In Sweden, it’s about “Turning cosmetics into experiences.” It’s the same mission, same vision, but different ways of implementation and communication.
more people work from home and independently; therefore, I believe it’s really essential to focus on the digital aspect. We also have a recommendation model through which people could earn more money through recommending our products. The fourth area is the customer service; we’ve been developing too fast and our customer service is lacking behind a bit, so we have to work on that. Last but not least, there is our staff; we’re putting greater emphasis on the training and educational development of our staff.

Handmade Art for
a unique Home By: Sally El Bardesy
I
n 2016 while technology took over everything including furniture design and interior design, mass production is easier and that’s how most people think; they think that fast buy and popular handy products is the way to go. However, nowadays, many individuals search for a more fulfilling and pleasing designs for their homes. Therfore, more people are becoming more appreciative of handmade products.
44 | MAY 2016
What is handmade furniture? In the past everything was handmade. People were fewer, designs were limited, manufacturers had more time to create, and people used to cherish art, details, uniqueness and treasures; and the same mindset was applied to interior design and furniture. Every single piece was made to be sold to a unique individual that wants a customized special order. Handmade is related to the past and comes from there; however, nowadays while designs tend to be more modern, contemporary, minimal, and lacking this artistic approach, handmaking becomes more one of a kind and exceptional. Only certain styles only include hand-making; like hand painting on furniture, walls, ceilings, glass and fabrics; a thing that makes the concept more exclusive and narrow.
What Styles can be handmade and painted? Usually any style could be handmade or painted; however, styles that complement the sophistication of art-by-hand are few. To name some we would say: Shabby chic: that is the European country side vintage style. Bohemian: usually inspired by the gypsy people and their way of life and continuous travelling because of being uninhabited. Tribal: that comes from the culture of tribes that would draw and paint to make their culture live long. Oriental Art: just as tribal this is a very wide range of patterns, cultural and trandional art that comes from every place in world. And to further illustrate the nature of handmade designs, I share with you some of my favorite handmade designs, which demonstrate another unique blend of various styles, in cooperation with “Inbox House that adds a fantasy factor. All the products are purely hand-crafted and painted in Egypt and customized for people who believe in it.. Photo Credit: Bilo Hussien Products and Shoot by: Inbox House Designer: Sally El Bardesy

You need to love yourself in order to have a good and an everlasting relationship! I believe that you must have a travel checklist to accomplish before getting married! Here are 8 cool things for your premarriage checklist:
1)Travel Alone and Get lost Although it’s nice to have a companion while you’re traveling. It’s also great to be that companion. Traveling alone gives you the chance to know more about yourself in a way nothing else can compete with. It can also help you make new friends and be more like yourself while traveling.
2)Sleep in a Hostel While fancy honeymoon hotels is the dream of everyone, sleeping in a hostel with a group of other 46 | MAY 2016
travelers probably from different countries in the world will give you the experience of a lifetime. Try it because there is too much to miss if you didn’t engage yourself in such an international community.
3)Hitchhike Well, just for the adventure. It’s totally worth it. Instead of taking a car, bus or any form of public transportation. Search for hitchhike to go from one city to another. Just make sure it’s safe to do so.
4)Go without a real plan Planning is good. It keeps you in control of almost everything while traveling. However, going without a real plan gives you the chance and the flexibility to receive surprises or join other travelers their path. Surprises can be really good; you can find yourself at a street party or hopping on a bus with a weird destination without even knowing it the night before.
5)Pamper yourself with a nice Yoga session followed by massage For girls, why not feel like a princess while still being single? Do you really need that charming boyfriend or husband to pamper you. You can do this by yourself ! Happiness is a decision you take, not something given so why not try things like this. Do more of what makes your soul happy!
6)Fall in love Yes, fall in love. It doesn’t have to be with a person. Fall in love with a city, a meal, a music genre or a dance! Being yourself before being in a relationship with someone will teach you how to make yourself happy so that you can even be happier while doing it with the love of your life.
7)Hang out strangers
with
complete
Get lost in a strange country, meet new people and make new friends. Hang out with people that are completely different. Talk to them, discuss serious issues while eating a cheap meal from the street and laugh with them. This could be one of the greatest experiences ever.
8)Overcome your biggest fear Whether it’s sky diving, wildlife safari or jumping off a bridge you gotta overcome your biggest fear and get some extra adrenaline running into your blood before getting married. Believe me, marriage should be more scary anyway!

I’ve always had cracking joints. I mean toes, fingers, neck and back knees. Now all joints seem to be painfull all the time; can this be the cause? w Doctor’s Answer:
I would first see a rheumatologist or an orthopedic surgeon for an evaluation to make sure you do not have an underlying rheumatologic disease. Crackling joints can lead to an element of ligamentous laxity which rarely is the cause of arthritis.

How to get rid of sweaty feet and bad smell ? Doctor’s Answer:
Sweaty and smelly feet often times go hand in hand. First wash your feet with special foot cleanser, spray your feet with anti-fungal sprays as well as your shoes. Use cotton socks when wearing shoes (will help absorb sweat), and spray your shoes with anti-fungal spray as well. Stay away from synthetic socks and shoes. Make sure shoe is genuine leather. Antipersperant foot sprays can help as well.

Why do I get stomach pain when I consume dairy products? Doctor’s Answer:
Some people who take antibiotics may have a condition of “lactose intolerance”; they lack (to varying degrees) the enzyme that breaks down milk sugar so it is digestible. Those who lack enzyme develop bloating, gas, diarrhea. Lactaid/dairy ease tablets provide this enzyme; also have pre-treated milk. Some ice creams are “lactose free” as well.

How come sometimes when I wake up, my throat hurts really bad?
I have a cut on my head. Will hair grow back on this area?
Doctor’s Answer:
Doctor’s Answer:
Several Reasons. One possibility is post nasal drip. While you are laying down, mucus from your nose drains down into your throat (your nose & throat are all connected in the back). This can cause a sore throat when you wake up. The mucus could be from an infection or allergies. Another possibility is dryness. At night your throat can dry out, especially if you breathe through your mouth.

What are the best coping skills for anxiety? I’ve been suffering from it for over a year now, and still having panic attacks and setbacks. Doctor’s Answer:
Skills like deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindfulness help. Like any other skill these have to be practiced regularly including when you are not having anxiety and panic attacks. I highly recommend seeing a psychologist to help you find skills tailored to your particular needs. Understand the reasons for your anxiety to find long-term solutions. Therapy will help.
Probably. Superficial cuts on the scalp should not damage any of the hair follicles ,which would cause the hair to stop growing. If the cut is deep to the second layer of skin (dermis), it is possible that the hair follicle is damaged and will not generate hair growth.

What is the best advice you could offer women when going shopping? Expert’s Answer:
Some of the best pieces I have in my wardrobe I’ve had for 10 years. Everyone’s always like, ‘You must spend a fortune on clothes!’ and I’m like, ‘No, I buy really good quality pieces.’ I mix the high and the low. I love TopShop, I love Zara, I love H&M. It’s really nice to learn to shop with an eye that knows you’re adding to your collection. Investing in great black separates is a great way to go—a great black pencil skirt, a great black cocktail dress. It’s really about being able to create a closet for yourself.

Are you Aware of what you Eat? By: Noura Hassaballa
Go grab a box of Mac & Cheese from your kitchen and try to read half of the ingredients listed on it. I bet unless you are a chemist you won’t even be able to pronounce what’s written on there. Same goes for most of the “Light”, “diet”, “sugar-free”, and you name it products. What you think is considered “healthy” and labeled as “natural” contain many harmful chemicals used as food preservatives and flavor enhancers; these chemicals are often disguised under unrecognizable names. Your body is designed to absorb and process natural foods, and if it’s not natural and has tons of additives, then where does it go?

Let’s take a look at the four primary toxin removal systems that must all be working in consistency with each other: 1. The disposal of cellular waste products, especially lactic acid. 2. The removal of larger waste products through your lymph (smaller waste products go into your veins and are exhaled or sent directly to your liver). 3. The processing of toxins by your liver, most of which then go into bile and then into your digestive tract for final clearance (some are made water-soluble and go to your kidneys to be excreted in urine). 4. The final clearance of waste products by your digestive tract. So, now you get what I’m trying to tell you? Eating packaged food without knowing what’s in it can actually harm you, because you are constantly overloading your liver with a bunch of unfamiliar compounds and you’re asking it to get rid of it. Would you still eat your favorite food if you knew that it contained Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT), a compound that is also used in jet fuel? Did you know that your delicious Ramen Noodles can lead to chronic illness because it contains Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)? What in the world are these names?!!! BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) is used in chips, bottled vegetable oil, cookies, and many other foods as a preservative, mainly to prevent oils in foods from oxidizing and becoming rancid. Oxidation affects the flavor, color and odor of foods and reduces some nutrients. BHT can cause allergic reactions, hyperactivity, possibly cancer-causing; it may also be toxic to the nervous system and the liver. MSG (Monosodium glutamate) is a flavor enhancer normally added to Chinese food, canned vegetables, soups and processed meats. MSG tricks your taste buds into making you think a certain food is high in a particular flavor and tastes fresher. It’s added to processed meat to enhance the flavor causing your brain to think it is high in protein while it’s actually not. MSG is an excitotoxin, which means it overexcites your cells to the point of damage or death, causing brain damage to varying degrees, and potentially even triggering or worsening learning disabilities, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Lou Gehrig's disease and more; according to Dr. Russell Blaylock, a board-certified neurosurgeon and author of "Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills.”
Wait, I’m not done yet…. Let me introduce some other food additives and what they do: • Hydrogenated Fats - cardiovascular disease, obesity • Artificial Food Colors - allergies, asthma, hyperactivity; possible carcinogen • Nitrites and Nitrates - these substances can develop into nitrosamines in body, which can be carcinogenic • Sulfites (sulfur dioxide, metabisulfites, and others)allergic and asthmatic reactions • Sugar and Sweeteners - obesity, dental cavities, diabetes and hypoglycemia, increased triglycerides (blood fats) or candida (yeast) • Artificial Sweeteners (Aspartame, Acesulfame K and Saccharin)-behavioral problems, hyperactivity, allergies, and possibly carcinogenic. • Artificial Flavors - allergic or behavioral reactions • Refined Flour - low-nutrient calories, carbohydrate imbalances, altered insulin production • Salt (excessive) - fluid retention and blood pressure increases • Olestra (an artificial fat) - diarrhea and digestive disturbances Conclusion: Your health is in your hands. After reading this article you can now choose between avoiding those foods and retaining your health, or keep on doing what you’re doing and put your life at risk simply because you don’t read the label.

Finding the Y in “Marriage”
Entering the Marriage Question and “Why” We Do It BY: LAUREN K. CLARK
W
hy Did I Get Married?” Isn’t that the question seeming to press the minds of many women and men? Filmmaker and Director Tyler Perry gives us this ongoing “enchantment” into the world of the married life, in not one, but two films. And while it continues as an age-old record player, it remains an overplayed cliché that feels true, once it actually happens! “Why Did I Get Married?” Well, now, that’s a very 64 | MAY 2016
important question. Why do you want to get married? A major step in every person’s life. And it definitely is nothing to rush into. Quickly, now. All ears are opening. Hmm... Does it appear to be taking you a little too long to answer the question? Pacing back and forth in your home, one seems a little hesitant. Really? You are hesitant to answer for your desire to get married? Shouldn’t it have been easy? Love. Meeting Your Soulmate. Marrying Your Best Friend. Ok, and we are still quiet. So, what needs to be part of the conversation is...honesty. Did you marry for love or was it for something else?
Let’s make it clear...getting married is not for fixing problems. As a matter of fact, the period preceding marriage should consist of practice. Yes, the practice phase. That means that during the courtship, boyfriend-girlfriend, and even friendship eras, couples are learning more about each other. Learning what makes the other tick, what makes them smile, and the WHATS of healing in a relationship. When you argue, are they over things that are important? Insecurities? Have you dealt with them? It’s this time and space, where one is able to create a loving and nourishing relationship. You continue to practice and practice... and practice. Bringing a beautiful vibe to a balanced relationship. So why did you get married? All women (and men) don’t get married for love. That’s for sure! If you want to marry for financial security, or to feel as if you have accomplished something, then rest assured that you will spend many lonely nights in the beautifully, decorated prison that you bargained for. Having no worries for work, someone to rear your children (if you are that lucky), and wondering if you even know who you are. And then you come to play the whys of your marriage. You didn’t fix the problems. You probably have even more problems by your side. And the extra baggage of loneliness, depression, and feeling as if you made the worse mistake of your life plays in your head like a broken record player. The very essence of marriage is that it should reflect a solid foundation of spiritual work with one’s partner during the courtship phase. Marriage, the wedding, marriage ceremony is a celebration of something which has already been established between two healthy and whole adults. Let’s repeat those words again...healthy and whole. Which means if a person is looking for marriage as some type of “validation,” then “Girl...we have a problem.” Wearing a wedding ring, or getting married just to say that you are married is a sign that there are soon to be problems. In this scenario, marriage will add more baggage to your bag. All of this reigns true when entering into a marriage that is empty. Should we repeat this again? Or did the word empty stand out to you? Carrying brokenness into a relationship ensures that it will fail, or become a prison sentence. Marriage cannot fix an already broken relationship. Nor can it magically transform a relationship that lacks creative solutions to fixing problems. And who says relationships are perfect; or have to be? It’s obvious for one to expect complications to arise. But here is the beauty, LADIES and GENTS... communication, and the ability to truthfully engage in
meaningful discourse with your partner can gradually heal and bring harmony to any relationship that is off key and off balance. Now that we have that part out of the way, let’s get to move back to our crystal ball. You are in a relationship, and the M-word pops up! Oooooh...spooky isn’t it? Well, it should scare you. Because even in fear, a lady or gent can begin to delve into deeper thoughts. You immediate psyche sees the dress, bridesmaids, families feeling out invitations, the proposal, purchase of the rings, planning of the reception, going over wedding costs, going crazy, your mind is going crazy, your mind is going evenmore and more and more and more and more and more and more...STOP! Take a breath little darling. Take a HUGE breath. Wusaaaah! Wusaaah! Wusaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Drink your water, sit on the couch, and breathe. You are still in the now. None of this has happened...yet! But your boyfriend or girlfriend, love partner, or whomever, has somehow brought it up---inconveniently! So the first step---reflect on you! Ask yourself one beautiful question. Are you satisfied with yourself ? Would you be happy even if you were not in a relationship? If you were to look around, would you smile about the life you have built for yourself ? Your accomplishments? Or would that smile to a backward flip? Pause. Now, after answering those set of questions, let’s move on to the next. Do you and your partner feel that you bring your full share into the relationship? Pause. Finally, (and yes, this is a very important question everyone) concerning finances and other logistics, would the two of you be able to support yourselves? Let’s face it. Who wants to depend on Mommy and Daddy, and invite family into your business? Pause. Now that we have gotten those questions answered, ask yourself this. What’s the damn rush? Fearing that you will lose your mate for not rushing into marriage requires a necessary talk. Someone who truly loves you won’t exert pressures for a quick marriage, without both being comfortable. The very best notion of an ideal marriage is to view it as a celebration into a lifelong journey of fulfilling work and solvable flaws! Ingredients of a perfect marriage, where imperfection is the essence of the MARRIAGE!

Mothers and sons usually have this special bond, especially when he is her only child; it starts of as the usual pampering of a mother, then it develops to over protection, and as years go by, this innocent motherhood feelings turn into a feeling of ownership. he is MY son! And right there is when the poor son involuntary evolves to be your typical momma’s boy, without even noticing that he is. Some of you may question the usage of the word “poor” to describe this type of men, especially the wives, who we feel the optimum empathy towards as well. And yet, we believe that we often blame the guy for turning that way, which is really unfair given the fact that many of us fall victims to the way we’re raised. 66 | MAY 2016
And to further prove our empathy with all the wives out there, we will start by listing just few aspects that are commonly associated with having a Momma’s boy as a husband (we feel ya!): • You can’t get over this hideous sofa (or any piece of furniture) that your mother-in-law generously picked for you, and you grinned every time you see it. • It’s been so long since you last went out with the love of your life; he finally calls to tell you he is taking you out for a dinner date. You dress up, and put your makeup on; he arrives on time, waiting in his car, and BAM! His mother is in the front seat next to him… • You can’t get him to grow a beard, or change his hair-do (which he probably got since he was 12), just
because his mom like him that way. • First thing you do on feasts is to head over to his mother’s house. • Your mom is probably the only one who knows about your agony, and it’s just super awkward and filled with fake smiles and unpleasant looks, whenever she meets your mother-in-law. It feels like the room is going to explode whenever they are together. • Your mother-in-law probably knows about that silly fight you had with your best friend last month, because you innocently shared your thoughts with your husband. • Your mother-in-law probably had a determinantw say on the names of your kids, and which school should they attend. Now we move to the most important part of this article, which offers some tips on how to deal with a Momma’s Boy: • We know that love can really be blinding, and that you might miss many alarming signs because of that; but you need to know that many indications of Momma’s Boy behavior are obvious during the dating/engagement phase. • If you are lucky enough to notice the signs early

Keep in mind that this is just the way that man was raised, and some of them really have no idea that what they’re doing is wrong or odd. So like we mentioned before, it would be unfair to judge or give up on them before even pointing out that something is wrong with the way they behave. It’s really hard to change a man overnight, and marriage in general is an eternity of work-in-progress; so don’t expect that he would just ignore or shut out his own mom! You need to compromise and choose your battles wisely. Again, if you’re lucky, you mother-in-law will adjust and respect the boundaries you set for your privacy; however, unfortunately, this is not always the case. So the best thing to do here is to win her over. You have to understand that it’s her son after all, and that she is simply intimidated by you, thinking you’ll take away her son. The smart thing to do is to indirectly show her that you’re not here to do so. Call her and text frequently, ask her about her opinion in certain subjects, invite her over, etc. You should be the one taking the lead here. May 2016 | 67

DECODING EGYPT....
BY: Haidy Zakaria
Mating Season.. a Documentary With this beautiful weather, that finally picked a season (yay summer), we find ourselves planning weekend getaways and beachfront relaxation that just make our hearts leap for joy. But, of course, all our plans get regularly ruined because May isn’t just a summer month, it is the start of the Egyptian wedding season.. *Queue national geographic voice over* “When the summer months start creeping into the Egyptian terrain, we find that the Egyptian male starts gathering twigs and leaves for nesting. The female, blessed with high screeches and obsessions over shiny things, goes hunting for the perfect wedding frock and the shiniest circle she can place around her finger. The male considers this as his way of marking his territory, the ring around her finger bears his name and therefore no other Egyptian male can approach her or risk facing the wrath of her chosen counterpart. When the wedding frock is put on, the rest of her female companions start emitting a loud screech, while wagging their tongues in their mouths, symboling their union. The festivities last for a whole day and a whole night where the males and females all perform ritual dances around each other in a pre-designated small circle. This circle allows for other males and females to interact, attract, and possibly set forth another eminent mating ritual like the one before.” *Sigh* This mating season lasts until December of the same year, then we take a three months recess and back again. The problem here is that the concept of originality has disappeared from the Egyptian psyche; all weddings look the same, sound the same, have the same music and the same food. The dresses look the same, the rings look the same and even the brides look like each other now…What happened to making something your own? Why do I have to basically recite what is going to happen before it does? And why is everything so loud? I realize that I sound like an old lady with a temper, but this has become ridiculous. I’m happy to attend all the weddings in the world, truly, but try to make your wedding something to remember, not just another wedding that costs an arm and a leg for no good reason. My dear Egyptian males and females, you are getting married to the love of your life (hopefully!) and your wedding should be beautiful and marvelous and breathtaking. However, you do not have to look like everyone else or act like everyone else. You are beautiful and you should be happy on your day, do it your way….
