Editor’s letter Go for Diamonds not Accessories Based on experience that I’m gaining everyday in life, I can give you a small but important piece of advice: Never ever choose accessories, no matter how shiny they look! I know that some accessories might be expensive, but this does not necessarily mean they are of high quality. I am also aware that accessories can be very fashionable, colorful and so irresistible that you are willing to buy them at any price. However, think once, twice and thrice before you make a purchase decision, especially since most jewelry purchases cannot be returned or exchanged. Don’t be deceived by the sparkle of accessories. That shine and brightness will fade by time. You deserve to have a genuine and original piece. Genuine original pieces are timeless; they will never be outdated or obsolete. They are strong; they can withstand you overusing them sometimes. And even if at times diamonds become less sparkling, they can be easily polished to become as beautiful as ever. Now you might be thinking to yourself, “I don’t have much money. I can’t buy diamonds all the time and never wear accessories. It will cost me a fortune.” But you know what? All girls can afford diamonds! It is simply because for each and every girl, there is a specific diamond that she can afford. Bottom line is: what matters most is originality rather than appearance. You need to think well; not only about the present but also about the future. Think long-run and not short-run.

Vintage French

wedding

The venue:

Since it’s october and the weather is expected to be pleasant in the next few months, you can have an outdoor morning wedding. French theme is all about the floral and elegant setting. However, if you don’t wanna miss the glamour that indoors weddings have to offer, you can also apply this theme. Choose a ballroom with good lighting system, vintage sealing and walls.

Colour theme: We have the basic and optional. The basics are black, which you can incorporate as black lace giving you the pure french vintage you are looking for, off-white to get the contrast with the black. The optional: you can add another colour to these two, most pale and royal colors apply, pale pink, blue or purple or royal violet also goes perfectly with the theme.

Setting: Chandeliers centerpieces are the perfect choice, but they are a bit pricy so you can add some chandeliers and the rest could be simple flower bouquet on a glass and candles around. At the entrance you can also have a banner “ Bienvenue à Paris” and frame it with white and pale pink roses.

Tables and chairs: If you are having an outdoor wedding then definitely go with wooden black or white chairs with a ribbon or decoration that matches the color theme. Incase the case of an indoor wedding you can go with only black wooden chairs but be careful they must match the setting of the ballroom. You can also go with covered chairs choosing off-white cloth with a black lace cloth around, in that case the table cloth could be black with a poppy napkin color like fushia or violet according to the theme. Another idea for the table, bois de rose with black lace cloth across the table with the centerpiece in the middle in that case the black wooden chairs would be breathtaking.

French patisserie: This idea is super simple but definitely leaves an impression on the guests..simply add a table next to the seating area with some french pastries on it. Macrons (go with vanilla and chocolate and add the colour that matches your theme. Mini croissant, lunettes, french cookies or customized cookies with tour eiffel on it or french words like “ oh la la” “ je t’aime” and hang a sign “ French Patisserie”.

20 | October 2013

Giveaways:

Hint:

Always show your guests that you are thanking each and every one of them. Here are some ideas to help you out! Cookies on the shape of tour eiffel wrapped and choose a ribbon that goes with your theme and you can attach a piece of paper saying merci beaucoup (with french font writing) Pearl bracelets with tour eiffel pendants Tour Effiel keychain and carved on the back your initials and the wedding date.

Don’t forget that vintage includes lace, feathers, pearls, etc.

hint: Upon guest arrival while they are waiting for the entrance and during dinner you can have french songs played for them.

Bridesmaids: All pale colours will suit the theme, however i strongly recommend the pale pink or bois de rose you can incorporate either black lace or off white with the dress and their gerbs could be mainly white roses with one or two fushia flowers. It looks great in the pictures. Your bridesmaids could be wearing black vintage masks during the entrance with feather fans, that way people would be expecting to see a glamorous and stylish bride, remember the 1st impression is very important.>>

Honeymoon checklist: To all our beautiful brides we know you are super busy so we prepared your honeymoon checklist.

Guestbook table: Vintage French theme is all about being authentic, when it comes to the guestbook table you have lots of options.

Bridesmaids Mission Possible! I

bY: YOSRA SHOHAYEB

t is that time of the season again, where white dresses are in, diamonds are best friends, flowers are beds and stars are sparkling anytime of the day. It is wedding season! This means that it is time for the rise of the one and only, personal assistant, entertainer, pleaser, anger reliever, support system and much much more, give it up for the‌ yes, you guessed it right, Bridesmaid.

28 | October 2013

A bridesmaid is a the bride’s best friend, childhood friend, family member, someone who is close to her heart, someone who will be there for her and most importantly someone who will not, under any circumstance, bail out on her when she turns into a bridezilla. The tradition of a bridesmaid has been around for centuries, standing beside the bride thank God no longer wearing pink puffy dresses; well actually sometimes it is worse. For a girl the honor given to be one’s bridesmaid is a gift that she must treasure forever. However, knowing what is expected with the offer makes it somehow, a bitter sweet privilege.

Let the drums roll About six months before the wedding, the bride delivers the news to her chosen ones, “I want you to be my bridesmaid.” An order not a question, but that is fine. It is just the beginning. As soon as the girls hear the news, hugs, jumping and girly screams fill the place trying to comprehend that they were actually chosen and acting surprised, as if they did not know. “When I first heard the news I was thrilled, however, I always knew it was me. Who else would it be?” Nevine Zaafan, a previous bridesmaid said. At that moment, it is all fun and games. The shopping spree begins for dresses, lingerie, honeymoon outfits, bikinis, what girl would not be excited for such a spree? The bridesmaid also starts spreading the word about the wedding letting everyone know that the queen is getting married.

Outfit mania And it begins here. The madness, the craziness, welcome to the outfit mania. Hearing you are a bridesmaid means that the next step will be hearing your obligated dress color. It means that you might be wearing a color you hate and a dress that ruins your figure. Above that all you are compelled to wear your widest smile on as if it is the perfect dress. However, that is not always the case nowadays. Nevine told Ladybird that she hated the color of her dress, but she could not say anything. “I wanted to see my friend happy,” she said. However, Aya Essam another bridesmaid said that as a veiled woman, green was absolutely not an option for her and that she will not wear it..

Two months to go Now you are trying your best to hold yourself together and not losing it all. At this time, as the bride’s assistant, sorry friend, and support system you are supposed to be keeping the bride calm if there are any bride disease symptoms. A foot massage would not be all that bad. Now you are attending photo shoots with her, holding her stuff, keeping it all together and in between taking that memorable picture with her that will remind you later on of how much you truly love her. Of course, as

one of your missions as an event planner, you will be preparing that fun and awesome night, the bachelorette party. As a previous bridesmaid, my bride friend told me, “I want you girls to do me a surprise at my wedding. Maybe a slideshow you speaking in about our memories would be nice.” Is that a surprise, question or an order?

One Week: Unleash the monster Now that you have figured that you are in a real horror movie, be afraid, be very afraid. If you think that the monster, your friend, has completely lost it, you have not seen anything yet. One week before the wedding will be your real challenge to make sure that everything is in place, her dress is perfect, her schedule is set and your shoulder is ready for her anytime she needs to lean on it. “I really just want to slap her right now,” Racha Sakr, a bridesmaid said.

The day The moment has arrived, the moment where all the torture will finally come to an end and the moment where the monster will turn into Cinderella. However, you are still on duty Miss. On the holy day, the bridesmaid mission is to have her weapons always ready to use. That means tissues, hairgrips, water, breath mints, lipstick and whatever you think will come in handy. A very important mission that day will be adjusting the bride’s dress every single second during the wedding. Do not lose it; you have an immune system for that by now. Sakr told LB that at her best friend’s wedding the other bridesmaids and her had to set the decorations and center pieces themselves as the wedding was about to start and the decoration car arrived very late. Sakr said that people were arriving, while they were still in their pijamas adjusting the decorations. At the end, when the bridesmaid sees her best friend in that wedding dress tears start to flood and it suddenly feels like it was all worth it and all the torture and the craziness becomes one of the best memories. A round of applause for all those tom cruises and heroes aka bridesmaids for passing through a phase that no one will ever understand but them. October 2013 | 29

The Red Phinda Striking furry bags and the classic plaid print are trends one should have their eye on this season! While strolling my babies down for a walk I wore the beautiful red Phinda bag I received by Okamia made of natural springbok skin. SPOTTED CELEBS LATEST NEWS & GOSSIP WEDDING JOY! Scarlett Johansson Gets Engaged to Former Journalist Romain Dauriac Scarlett was spotted sporting a beautiful ring on her wedding finger and it’s now been confirmed that Romain popped the question. Scarlett started dating Romain - a former journalist who now runs a creative agency - in November 2012, after breaking up with previous boyfriend Nate Taylor. It will be the second marriage for the Avengers star, who wed Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, 36, in 2008. The couple split in 2010 and she wasn’t bothered about tying the knot again.

Jennifer Lopez: “I loved having a weird jiggly belly after having my babies but it took a year to get back in shape.” The singer who gave birth to twins Max and Emme in February 2008 says she felt proud of the extra curves she had following their arrival. “When I got pregnant, I remember watching my back, belly and butt grow and thinking, “I will never be the same again,”’ says J-Lo, 43. “Then I remember right after the twins were born having that weird jiggly belly - and kind of loving that, too. Because I earned that jiggly belly. Then came trying to get my body back into shape and how long that took. A whole year.” 70 | October 2013

I decided to apply my own makeup on my wedding day, how can I guarantee the best result without causing a disaster on my big day?

The makeup the bride wears on her wedding day is something that has great importance and needs to be considered with caution. So here are a few things to stay away from lest you consider them wedding day makeup mistakes. Stay away from bold eye shadows. Now is not the time to experiment. Maybe you’re are a big fan of silver and gold, but let’s leave that to holiday ornaments. Or those trendy new colors from your favorite cosmetics company are all the rage, but save them for another day. Keep your eye shadow simple, clean and neutral toned. Use: MAC Glamour Daze Extra Dimension Eyeshadow. Avoid shimmery blushes. Sure they’re pretty, but you want the focus to be on your dress that not the glistening at the apples of your cheeks. Keep your blush more natural looking and matte. Use: Dior Golden Jungle blush. Don’t try to match your foundation yourself. There is nothing worse than watching a face with a messed up foundation walk down the aisle or even worse, someone looking like that foundation line at their neck. Find your nearest makeup store, trusted salon or department store counter and try different samples till you reach the right color for your skin tone weeks in advance and have them match the correct foundation to your skin tone. Take them up on that free makeover to make sure you are comfortable with how it looks. Use: Poudre Signee De Chanek Illuminating Powder and Chanel Vitalumière foundation. Avoid trendy lip colors. Your wedding is not the time to make the statement that you are indeed the trendsetter that you are. Stick with a simple lip color, matte or dewy, that is a complement to your eyeshadow and blush to complete your overall look. Use: MAC Spring Summer 2013 Nudes and Metallics Collection or Bobbi Brown Nude Lipstick. Do not wear mascara that is not waterproof. This should be common sense and the most obvious, but how many brides have you seen with that black trail of mascara tears? Sure it’s difficult to part with your daily mascara- no matter how amazing it is but opt for waterproof mascara to avoid the biggest makeup mistake of all. Use: Lancôme Hypnôse Drama Waterproof Full Impact Volume Mascara or YSL Mascara Aquaresistant.

The Skinny On Mineral Makeup How do mineral makeup compare to traditional makeup?

M

ineral makeup is so natural looking, it feels like a second skin, and on hot humid summer days it wears better than traditional liquid makeup, is one opinion on mineral make up. I’m not a big fan. I find it collects in fine lines and pores and accentuates dry flaky areas, while it catches in slick spots. And if you’re a woman of color, it can be very difficult to find a shade that’s a good match for your skin. Women, of course, often disagree about the merits of makeup products. However, the debate over mineral makeup is especially fierce, going beyond whether it offers a flawless glow or a cakey finish into questions of health and safety. Companies boast that their mineral makeup confers skin care benefits, while detractors raise alarms that the finely ground particles may be risky. One thing is certain: Women are buying mineral makeup in greater numbers than ever. 74 | October 2013

Mineral Makeup: Hype Reality Bare Escentuals started what it dubbed “the mineral revolution” when it launched its loose powder foundations in the mid 70s. Competing brands soon followed, all offering the claim that mineral makeup, made from crushed pure minerals, was more “natural” than conventional makeup. Cosmetic chemists don’t quite see a revolution. All makeup is mineral makeup. You’ll find the same mineral ingredients; titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, mica and iron oxides in conventional products, is what they say. Contrary to what advertisements may suggest, those ingredients aren’t simply mined, pulverized, and poured into compacts. Zinc oxide mine. It doesn’t exist. Zinc oxide is synthesized in the lab. And though titanium dioxide, another mineral makeup mainstay, may start out with natural titanium, it undergoes an extraction and purification process in the lab, too. That’s a good thing. There isn’t any natural source of titanium that’s pure enough to be used in cosmetics, it’s all contaminated with things like mercury and lead. What makes mineral makeup different from traditional makeup isn’t the ingredients it contains, but what’s left out. That list, for many leading brands, includes preservatives, mineral oil, chemical dyes, and fragrance. These are all possible causes of irritation, one reason many dermatologists recommend mineral makeup. Skin Care Benefits: Mineral makeup won’t take the place of your moisturizer, acne cream, or anti-aging serum potions, but it does offer some skin care benefits. • Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are both physical sun blocks, so a uniform application of mineral makeup will provide some sun protection. If you’re going to be spending hours outdoors on a sunny day, choose a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 45. • What’s more zinc oxide is approved as a skin protectant. “It has some anti-inflammatory properties, so you’ll see it in products like diaper-rash ointment. Since mineral makeup contains a higher percentage of zinc oxide than traditional makeup, it can be useful in calming irritated skin.

BY: Jolanda Bakker

Possible Risks: Makeup Artist • Just as the benefits of mineral makeup have been exaggerated, so have the potential dangers. One concern is that mineral makeup is micronized into ultra-small particles called nanoparticles that can penetrate the skin’s barrier and trigger potentially harmful reactions. However, there is no need to fear. • Only a very small minority of people with highly sensitive skin will find themselves irritated by the ingredient. These are women who react to so many ingredients that they’ll probably want to have their dermatologist perform skin patch tests to identify what might possibly cause a reaction. Blurred Line: Mineral makeup has gone far beyond its modest beginnings as a loose powder foundation. Today, you can find blush, bronzer, eye shadow, lipstick, and even liquid foundations presented as mineral products. As these products have proliferated, a funny thing has happened. Cosmetics companies have added back the ingredients they omitted when they first introduced mineral makeup. As for so-called liquid mineral foundations, it’s impossible to create a liquid product with a pared-down ingredients list. Because microbes thrive in water, a liquid formulation must include some kind of preservative. Without it, contaminated products can lead to skin infections. The bottom line: If you have sensitive skin, you might want to give a loose mineral powder foundation a try. Look for products with the shortest ingredients list. You’ll get yourself in trouble if the list is big. For everyone else, mineral makeup will do no harm and with some practice of the “tap, swirl, and buff ” application method, you might find yourself enjoying its camouflaging abilities. Just keep your expectations in check. “No one product, including mineral foundation, is going to correct problems like large pores and uneven pigmentation. To address those concerns you need primer, concealer, and the right skin care regimen. October 2013 | 75

tell us about yourselves. Taher Mansour: I come from a family of five brothers and a sister, where the family grew up between Egypt, England, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Having a relatively large family, long road trips and camping became one of my favorite activities. As I grew older, my travel crave grew with me. By the age of 23, I had expanded my travel limits to include most of the Arab countries. I am currently a senior manager in a regional company with 11 solid years of FMCG experience, yet more than 20 years of travel experience. I have traveled most of Europe, Africa, North America, Eastern Europe and the Far East. Every trip carries a 76 | October 2013

Who is Bahira Galal? I am a tour guide graduated from Sacre-Coeur French School in Ghamra. I am a mother of two beautiful girls. I live in Garden City, where my shop is. I come from an aristocratic family, where my father was an officer in the army. I also come from a family, who is in love with art. How did you get into the chocolate business? What is unique about your chocolate? It is homemade chocolate that is brought from Belgium. The chocolate’s filling is not found elsewhere in Egypt. We have several fillings such as Arabic coffee, cardamom, cheesecake, espresso and much more. What is truly unique is that we allow our customer to go far with his/her imagination, meaning that the customer can imagine any shape of chocolate with whatever filling he/she desires and we create it. We allow the chocolate creativity to come from the customer. We have grabbed people’s attention with our chocolate inventions such choco shawerma and our Pharaonic tomb and pyramids shaped chocolate. We must not forget our own chocolate fondue. We also design and create eatable pictures on our chocolates such as Sisi’s picture that grabbed the attention of

not only our customers but the press as well such as Reuters. What do you create other than chocolates? We create and design cakes, cupcakes, macaroons, cookies and even hot chocolate with a chocolate spoon to be melted in. They are all of course from our own chocolate.

What obstacles have you faced in your business? There are many. However, I cannot seem to forget about this one incident, when an event planner for a well-known hotel has took eight kilos of chocolate with their decorations worth ten thousand pounds and did not pay for them. What was the most memorable feedback you have received about your wedding chocolates? “This wedding would not have been this beautiful without Kakao’s decorations and chocolate. This was truly a statement that made all the hard work and effort exerted worth it. Tell us about your wedding chocolate designs. I design the wedding chocolates according to the theme and color of the wedding. I design it starting from the chocolate with its filling to the decorations created on it. I even design the candy table you find on the entrance of the wedding. Sometimes when the couple is hesitated on what theme or color to choose, in that case we sit with couple, talk with them, know their personality and according to that come up with ideas to suit them. Do you design and create chocolates for other events related to weddings? Of course! I have done tons of chocolates, cakes, cookies with their decorations for engagement parties, bachelorettes and baby showers. October 2013 | 79

F

avorito, a new gourmet store and restaurant, has opened its doors and online store to gastronomers and refined food shoppers in Cairo. Located in the Kattameya Mall in the Fifth Settlement, next to Seoudi supermarket, Favorito is a place that guarantees the finest quality ingredients for every culinary desire. Favorito opens with ten different shopping sections of the finest quality products: pastry, bakery, dry section (pasta, oils, etc), imported cheese, cold cuts, fresh & frozen seafood, meat & poultry, imported meat, fruits and vegetables, as well as dried fruits and nuts. The meat section is especially unique, operated by a team of butchers who are internationally trained in producing every kind of cut to perfection. The local meat comes from farms managed under Favorito’s team, with specific standards set for the way the cattle is treated and the quality of fodder it is fed. Favorito is also the only retail provider of Canadian Certified Angus beef in Egypt. Favorito also offers a variety of fresh salads and sandwiches made to order – the ideal lunch or quick

snack choice for anyone in the Fifth Settlement area. In addition to the retail outlet, upstairs you will discover The Favorito Restaurant: a small, fine dining experience that uses the store’s finest ingredients to create original Italian recipes. Succulent dishes including Ravioli di Noci, prepared with homemade Ravioli with a rich, flavorful gorgonzola sauce and the Filetto di Manzo “Angus” made with the finest Certified Angus beef tenderloin. Tarek El Gammal, co-founder of Favorito, said, “The Favorito concept was born out of a desire to find the best quality ingredients to create excellent food. There are many people here, who crave prime cuts of meat, hand-selected vegetables, imported cheeses and many other delicacies. At Favorito, we make this possible with the added convenience of online shopping.” Favorito is open from 8am to midnight every day of the week. Online orders will receive same-day delivery within Cairo. Who said you have to travel abroad to discover a real gourmet experience?

The Co-Founder’s Journey: Tarek El-Gammal Tarek El-Gammal, a truly inspiring person, showed us that it is fine not to know what you want, wander for a while and discover your dream. As soon as El-Gammal graduated from university, major marketing, he followed his dream and became a diving instructor in Gouna and Marsa Allam. However, bad news surprised him knowing that he cannot continue as an instructor due to ear problems. As a person who loves life with all its surprises, that was not something that could possibly bring him down. El-Gammal flew to Dubai not knowing what to expect. Through the help of a friend, he started his career there at Pepsi-Cola in the sales team. Along with his work, El-Gammal’s love for diving kept flowing by starting an online diving center for diving courses and safari trips. After two years of working, El-Gammal moved to another International company at Dubai. Due to training courses that he had to attend, El-Gammal flew to his motherland, Egypt. In 2009, El-Gammal’s journey began when he decided to go on a self-discovery trip. He resigned from his job at Cairo and decided to go to South East Asia for six months. Throughout this trip ElGammal’s self was redefined and it was truly a life changing experience for him. First, El-Gammal discovered that he wants to work for a bigger purpose. So, while he was in Asia, he decided to do some charity work by teaching children and helping them out. El-Gammal attention was drawn then to something very interesting. Children there did not have much money, but they were happy and satisfied, whereas some Egyptians have a lot of money but are not very content. El-Gammal decided to do a chart of why Egyptians were not very happy.

One of the most important things he discovered in order to be happy is to be healthy physically and mentally, as well. After getting into nutrition through the happy chart, the second thing that interested El-Gammal very much and got him into healthy food was mediation. In 2008, he travelled to Nepal, where he took part in a silent form of meditation, Vipassana, staying in a monastery. He also met an inspiring Indian teacher, whom introduced him to Reiki healing and initiated him afterwards as a level two Reiki healer. During his backpack journey in South East Asia, ElGammal underwent a Tao Detox, which is a sevenday program without any solid food in order to clean your system. The way El-Gammal ate and the way he perceived food changed ever since. He started reading about health and nutrition and decided to return to Cairo in order to feed Egyptians healthy food and aware them about the importance of it. Since then, El-Gammal’s path was clear and bright as the sun. He started his online health store in Cairo, NGS Egypt, where he saw true results from Egyptians interested to learn about healthy eating habits. Afterwards, he founded Favorito with a couple of partners. El-Gammal knew that Egyptians deserve the crème de la crème of food quality. El-Gammal’s passion for food is definitely contagious, whether through his store or through speaking to him. He is the kind of person who always enjoyed quality. For him, food does not have to be expensive as long as it is done with correct ingredients and good quality. “It is about the quality, not the value,” El-Gammal said. El-Gammal did not only teach us about the importance of healthy food or good quality. ElGammal taught us that when one is lost and out of path, then one should always go back to nature, not only in food but also in the way you live. Nature has it all.

Decorating Your New Home? You’d better go original…

Just like shopping, decorating your place is a job to love. I believe its even way more because styling your house is truly a reflection and one’s own. Unfortunately people tend to do it the wrong way. It always gets stuck between general taste, common trends, family and friends point of views and defiantly budget! BYY: Sally el bardesy Interior and Furniture Designer

Well, not any more if you use the following techniques and tips:

Learn to learn Go take that décor course, subscribe to that sites newsletter, read books, chase magazines talking about art. Studying hard is fun when you love it. In a world of ours pretending that you know everything is a sin. Even interior designers who have a degree are helpless without knowledge and research.

Customization Just like coffee, everyone have it in a different way. Customizing is all about putting your taste, personality and beliefs in a show. The more you know and learn the more you ll do it better and create a signature. Also when going through customizing you put certain energy that reflects back forever. That’s why people enjoy it!

Tatements One of the easiest ways to create an eye catching place and add more interest to it is to find a statement. Be careful what statement means though. It could be one of a kind but out of place. Usually you start designing with a statement. A bright big piece of furniture or that wild wallpaper or an eye candy frame then the rest comes to follow and to enhance it. Remember, if it’s a statement, the corner you chose for it should be too.

Collective finds You need to be that kind of person with the artistic eye. The kind that knows some history and some deep appreciation to details. Mostly collecting some valuable items like furniture, paintings, accessories..etc. has two aspect’s, one is having them already from parents and grandparents. You can apply some modifications to them to suit you. other aspect is to complete the sets from market with objects that links them together.

Prints and colors This is the interesting part! However till today people keep sticking to rules that don’t really exist. One of the most common are “its best to buy dark furniture to avoid dust” Although dust is actually bright and it should show more on a dark base! And if you have a pattern say polka dots or flowers then you should match it with plain colors. Oh really ! So Boho, patch work and country style comes from another world. ! Don’t be afraid to go wild, unique, artistic and standing out. Remember you are free.

Ditch The Common & Opt For The Extraordinary! Unusual honeymoon destinations you never thought of!

H

oneymoons can be cliché! Going to the usual places like Hawaii, Paris, Far East, etc. starts to feel less like you’re on a special vacation with your spouse and more like you’re in some kind of honeymoon factory. Boring. Dull. And not unique. Forget that. Do you want the same pictures as half your friends, family or office? You spent all that time making sure you had a special day, so double down and make your postwedding revelry just as cool. The world is full of amazing places to jaunt off to once you’ve tied the knot. No need to trod down the same road as everyone else. Remember it’s your honeymoon, so it has to be special and unique. Consider one of the below destinations, these hideaways rarely appear on th1e usual post-wedding itinerary. Make your honeymoon a personalized, unique vacation to remember! Here are off the beaten path honeymoon destinations that you’ll be sure to never forget!

Chill out at one of the spectacular beaches at Croatia. Go now before it turns in to the Amafi Coast or Greece or something totally expected. Island hop from the ancient town of Trogir to Brac and then Hvar, which is known for its wines, or just chill on any one of their spectacular beaches.

90 | October 2013

Party rocker couples book your flight to del Este, Uruguay, right now! Not all honeymoons are about drooling, sugary sweet love on each other. Some couples like to party it up. They may do so here, where the jet set of Buenos Aires and Montevideo and Europe come to park their yachts and brag about hanging out in some obscure South American town that no one’s ever heard of before. Chill on the gorgeous beaches during the day and then get your bar or dance club on till the sun rises and then do it all again.

A honeymoon is a short period of doting between dating and debating.

Enjoy a private beach on remote Pamalican Island, Philippines. At 5.5 km long, roughly 500 meters at its widest and only one five-star resort on the island, you’re guaranteed seclusion. Oh, and dive in to see vibrant colors , Pamalican is set smack in the centre of a 7 sq km coral reef.

Ray Bandy

Unwind on a gorilla safari in Bwindi Forest National Park, Uganda. On guided walks to observe these gentle giants you’ll encounter jagged valleys, dramatic mountain scenery and monkeys. In the evenings, stargaze around campfires and retire in tents built into the jungle canopy while peering into the mist-shrouded rainforest from bed.>>

Taste wine amid copper-colored canyons in Cafayate, Argentina. Filled with estancias (sumptuous ranch lodging) and vineyards where you can taste rarely-shipped-abroad varietals like Torrontes, this handsome desert town begs you to wander hand-in-hand, past dusty buildings and candle-lit cafes spilling onto sidewalks.

Smooching in Bettmeralp, Switzerland. It starts with a cable-car ride, launching you into a car-free Alpine village. You are going to enjoy views of the Aletsch glacier and mountains (including the Matterhorn), strolling between chalets or indulging in fondue. Oh, and Swiss tradition says if you lose your bread in the cheese, you must kiss your dining neighbor, so let that bread disappear!

Take a vintage train journey in Namibia. From the all-aboard whistle to the smart retro furnishings on the 1950s-esque Desert Express, this train feels like you’ve stepped on a classic film set. Recline in antique leather armchairs and clink glasses in the Spitzkoppe lounge to the sultry sway of the coach. Later, dine in the Welwitschia restaurant car below sandblasted glass panels featuring local animal footprints while rambling past gold-red dunes and African wildlife.

92 | October 2013

Do a safari at the wilds at Kruger National Park, South Africa. There’s something primal about seeing animals in their natural environment that may just speak through you and your husband in the beds of any one of the luxe lodges around here.

Dance your honeymoon out at Cartagena, Colombia. Eat and drink to your heart’s content along beach front restaurants, while away on gorgeous beaches, make out in romantic carriage rides down cobblestone streets or just get away from it all, an hour boat ride away is Rosario Island, a sleepy island surrounded by warm turquoise waters. And if you get bored, remember that the Colombian people invented Salsa.

Honeymoon Planning Expert Tips! • Make a list of ideal, dream destinations separately and then see if any of your ideas match. • Plan your relaxation, excursions and luxury pampering in advance. • Eat well, drink well and don’t feel guilty about it. • Take lots of photographs and pamper each other. • Tell everyone you’re on your honeymoon, You’ll be surprised at the extra special service you’ll get when people realize you’re on your honeymoon. • Forget about everyone and everything at home. • Allow some time back at home before you go back to work. Remember, your honeymoon destination needs to work for both of you. Luxury and exclusivity can take many different forms but the most important thing when planning your honeymoon, is to choose where you want to be together. October 2013 | 93

Q1: Is my microwave giving me cancer? Doctor’s Answer: No. Microwaving doesn’t alter food in any way that could make you sick. All a microwave does is spur the water molecules in your food to move, and the friction of those molecules heats up your meal. The ovens do generate a tiny magnetic field, but there’s very little evidence that such a field poses a problem for humans. What’s more, there’s an easy way to avoid any potential harm, step back when the oven is on.

Bill Schaffner MD

Q2: How long am I contagious when I have the flu or a cold? Doctor’s answer: As long as you have symptoms. Your ability to spread these viruses remains until the last sniffle. And you’re contagious 24 hours before you first show symptoms.

Doctor’s answer: Rich protein sources include lentils, legumes, nuts/seeds, soy products (such as tofu or soy meat substitutes), eggs, and dairy products. You need to be intentional about consuming these foods several times throughout the day.

Harry Lodge M.D.

Q4: I always sleep on my stomach, but I’ve heard this is bad for your back. Is there a right way to sleep? Doctor’s answer: If your position isn’t actually bothering your back, don’t stress about it; you’re not doing anything “bad” that will cause problems down the road. If you are in pain, though, it’s worth trying to retrain yourself to sleep so your spine is neutral (straight and curved in the right places, as if you were standing with good posture). One healthy position is on your back with a pillow under your knees and another under your head and neck. Uncomfortable? Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees and another one under your head that’s big enough to keep your head in line with your spine. The best you can do may be to make sure you have a great mattress and pillows. Hint: If your back hurts at home but doesn’t when you sleep in hotels, it may be time for replacements. 98 | October 2013

Q5: My eyes are always bloodshot and they look awful. How can I make the whites of my eyes whiter? Doctor’s Answer: Many of the eye’s blood vessels are tiny enough that if you can see them, they’re irritated or inflamed, says. If you’ve tried cold compresses and been checked out for allergies and you’re still flying red-eye. To combat eye dryness, try getting more omega-3 fatty acids into your diet with salmon, tuna, sardines, walnuts, and flax seeds or just take 1,000 mg of fish oil a couple of times a day. (But don’t take more than 3,000 mg daily unless you’re under a doctor’s supervision.) Germs on your hands or in your cosmetics can cause a mild infection, inflaming the edges of your eyelids. The best home treatment is to gently scrub the edges of the eyelids with a few drops of baby shampoo on a clean, wet washcloth. And replace your makeup every three to six months.

Q6: Can drinking water with lemon prevent kidney stones? Doctor’s answer: One-half cup of lemon juice concentrate added to drinking water over the course of the day is a preventive therapy for calcium oxalate stone formation.

Dr. Richard Usatine

A professor of family medicine at University of Texas Health Science Center.

Q7: Whenever I’m under a lot of stress, I get a really awful cold sore on my lip that becomes a huge ugly scab. Can anything help? Doctor’s answer: When you run yourself ragged, cold sores are your body’s way of saying, “I give up!” They’re caused by the oral herpes virus. You probably were infected when you were a kid, and the virus has been in your body ever since. When you get stressed, the virus grabs the opportunity to sneak around your immune system and start multiplying, and the result is a nasty, tingly blister. Give your immune system a fighting chance by remembering to exercise, sleep, and eat right. “Abreva is the only over-the-counter medicine that works. If you get more than three or four cold sores a year, or if there’s a fever and a lot of swelling, talk to your doctor.

Q8: Do childhood earaches cause hearing loss later in life? Doctor’s answer: Recurrent ear infections during childhood can sometimes lead to chronic hearing loss. If an infection is suspected, the child should be seen by a physician for appropriate treatment. October 2013 | 99

What Happens When We Sleep?

E

verything that happens during the waking hours has meaning for sleep, both quantitative and qualitative. Just as the length of our waking period affects our deep-sleep period, which we think, feel and do during our waking hours is also important to our life of sleep. Conversely, the possibilities for us during the day are influenced by what happens during sleep in terms of wonderful, wisdom-filled building-up, or also that which is perhaps disturbing. Sometimes dreams are a type of physical self-knowledge. As has already been described, dreams can indicate the inner organic life of a person. However, dreams also play an important role in a person’s ability to learn and mentallyemotionally process what has been experienced during the day. We can see that these nightly pauses are of great significance and also how important it is to go to bed at a proper time. For instance, getting enough sleep before a test can be more useful in terms of results than studying long hours the night before. 100 | October 2013

Sleep is not a waste of time. Sleep is a necessary and vital biological function. It is essential to a person’s physical and emotional well being. Studies have shown that without enough sleep, a person’s ability to perform even simple tasks declines dramatically. The average sleep-deprived individual may experience impaired performance, irritability, lack of concentration, and daytime drowsiness. They are less alert, attentive, and unable to concentrate effectively. Additionally, because sleep is linked to restorative processes in the immune system, sleep deprivation in a normal adult causes a biological response similar to the body fighting off an infection. Persistent sleep deprivation can cause significant mood swings, erratic behavior, hallucinations, and in the most extreme, yet rare cases, death. The jury is still out on the long-term effects of sleep deprivation on health. Current research in this area is examining the effects of sleep deprivation on the immune system. Although researchers are not exactly sure why we need sleep, there are two basic theories:

1. Restorative: Sleep enables the body and mind to rejuvenate, re-energize, and restore. As a person sleeps, it is thought that the brain performs vital housekeeping tasks, such as organizing long-term memory, integrating new information, and repairing and renewing tissue, nerve cells and other biochemical. Sleep allows the body to rest and the mind to sort out past, present, and future activities and feelings.

This is the time when most dreams occur, and, if awoken during REM sleep, a person can remember the dreams. Most people experience three to five intervals of REM sleep each night. Infants spend almost 50% of their time in REM sleep. Adults spend nearly half of sleep time in stage 2, about 20% in REM and the other 30% is divided between the other three stages. Older adults spend progressively less time in REM sleep.

2. Adaptive: Sleep may have evolved as a protective adaptation-finding food in the daytime and hiding at night is easier. Nearly every animal sleeps to some degree. Thus, it only makes sense that predators sleep more than animals that are prey. For humans, the amount and quality of sleep achieved is directly proportional to the amount and quality of the next day’s productivity.

Healthy Sleeping Tips For the most part, sleeping involves a routine. So it makes sense that there are things you can do in your daily and nightly routines to improve your sleep quality, you might want to incorporate some of the following tips:

Usually sleepers pass through five stages: 1, 2, 3, 4 and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. These stages progress cyclically from 1 through REM then begin again with stage 1. A complete sleep cycle takes an average of 90 to 110 minutes. The first sleep cycles each night have relatively short REM sleeps and long periods of deep sleep but later in the night, REM periods lengthen and deep sleep time decreases. Stage 1 is light sleep where you drift in and out of sleep and can be awakened easily. In this stage, the eyes move slowly and muscle activity slows. During this stage, many people experience sudden muscle contractions preceded by a sensation of falling. In stage 2, eye movement stops and brain waves become slower with only an occasional burst of rapid brain waves. When a person enters stage 3, extremely slow brain waves called delta waves are interspersed with smaller, faster waves. In stage 4, the brain produces delta waves almost exclusively. Stages 3 and 4 are referred to as deep sleep, and it is very difficult to wake someone from them. In deep sleep, there is no eye movement or muscle activity. This is when some children experience bedwetting, sleepwalking or night terrors. In the REM period, breathing becomes more rapid, irregular and shallow, eyes jerk rapidly and limb muscles are temporarily paralyzed. Brain waves during this stage increase to levels experienced when a person is awake. Also, heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, males develop erections and the body loses some of the ability to regulate its temperature.

Change Your Day to Maximize Sleep • Wake up and go to bed at the same time every day, even on weekends. • Limit your intake of alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco products during the day, especially in the hours before sleep. • Finish eating 2 to 3 hours before bedtime, avoiding big meals. • Exercise regularly. Finish your exercise a few hours before bedtime. • Eliminate napping or limit the duration to 20 to 30 minutes. Create the Best Possible Sleep Environment • Remove electronics like computers and televisions from your room. • Keep the room cool, comfortable, quiet, and dark. • Use a comfortable mattress and pillows. • Use the bed only for sleep and intimacy. Prepare for Sleep • Establish a relaxing bedtime routine: take a bath, read a book, listen to relaxing music before bed. • Don’t watch the clock, it can cause anxiety about sleep. • Get out of bed if you can’t fall asleep within 15 to 20 minutes. Only spend time in bed when you are actually sleeping. • Write down concerns that keep you awake, creating a “to do” list for tomorrow. Also keep a sleep journal to help you see patterns in your sleep.

Your Genes Say It All

BY: Farah Nezer

A

medical health history is nothing more than a record that contains health information about a person and his close relatives (parents, brothers, aunts, grandfathers, cousins and nephews) from three generations.

The Importance of Medical History In a family there are many factors in common. Genes, lifestyle and environment are some of them. If we gather all these factors together we have a record that is called “family medical history.” This history gives us hints about the health condition of the family. In case of a disorder, doctors can prevent if an individual or other members of a family or next generations will be at risk to suffer from this disorder. If in a family exists a history of certain cancer or high blood pressure, for example, then the members can go for check ups more often, try to exercise and change their daily nutrition habits. A family medical history gives information about the risk of exact health problems, but if there is a relative with a disorder, it is not necessary that an individual will develop it.

How to Get Information?

Use of Information

A simple, easy idea is start asking your family about their health condition. Ask your relatives how they feel, if they have any problem, what kind is this, if they take pills, if they suffer from allergy or any kind of disturbance. Many of them have documents (radiographies, blood counts, death certificates, causes of death, etc.). Try to get more information: when a disease appeared, what the symptoms were, how many persons in the family had the same problem. During feasts and holidays families gather together and this is a good opportunity to talk about this. Inform your relatives about your family situation too, so in case of a problem someone can give information about you.

A family medical record is very important and in many cases can save lives. The first thing you can do is to share this collected information with the family doctor or any other physician who asks you details about family members’ health. And this information is not only useful in case of a health problem, but in daily life too. If someone is allergic, for example, to a drug or a substance you can save his life in hospital or in a restaurant. In many cases, the detail that the person is allergic to a specific kind of medicine saves his life while he is in the surgery. Without this information, maybe doctor give him the drug and the patient would be dead.

The most important thing is to keep the medical record up-to-date and enrich it with any change or conversion of one’s health.

Doctors need details and explanations and you need the doctors. Cooperation between you and them is salutary.

We can say that a disorder is “running in a family” when more than one member has the symptoms (conditions). Some disorders affect many persons of a family and responsible for this are the mutations of genes. These disorders can be passed down from parent to child (inherit). Sometimes genes are not the only responsible. Environmental factors like nutritional habits or mix genetic alterations and environmental habits cause the disorders. Determining if a condition in a family is inherited is not an easy job. An expert can say if a disorder has genetic origin, after a careful observation of the family medical history (individual’s immediate or extended family). The doctor will ask information about several generations of the family and first, second and third degree relatives.

Inheritance and Children If a genetic disorder runs in a family, people logically want to know if they or their kids will develop the condition. In some cases it is very difficult to confirm or predict it and that happens because many factors affect one’s chances to develop a genetic condition. There are many patterns of inheritance: dominant, autosomal, autosomal recessive, codominant, etc. It is very important is to discover how the condition is

inherited. A genetics expert can give you more details about this.

What can I do? In every case, “prevention is better than cure”. A full check up for the couple before the wedding would be able to inform them about their health and reveal potential problems for you and your husband, especially in cases that a disease runs in the family. But even if not, this kind of test is good to be done. In case that a doctor finds that something goes wrong, he could give you all the information about the problem and of course the way to solve it. In cases where the screening was not done before the wedding, it could be done before pregnancy. In hundred cases this kind of routine control had proved valuable.

One of the most important aspects of what makes us who we are is neither straight genes or straight environment but actually what happens to us during development.

What is a “Disorder in the Family”?

Workouts For You & Your Significant Other Motivating to work out is not always easy, but it’s a lot easier when your significant other’s on board. Studies show that teaming up increases your chances of sticking with an exercise program. Plus, exercising together is a great way to bond and make exercising more fun. Passion Pass Target: legs, butt, back, abs and shoulders (You will need a ball for this activity.) Stand back-to-back with your partner and lower yourselves into a squat, keeping your butts leveled with your knees. Let your partner hold the ball on both hands while you place your hands on your chest. Let your partner twist to the left passing the ball as you twist to the right to receive it. Switch direction, this time you should be doing the passing and your partner should be the one receiving the ball. Repeat the routine for as many as you can.

Cupid curls Target: abs and biceps (You will need 2 resistance bands for this activity.) Sit on the floor facing each other with your legs positioned wide apart. Make sure that your feet touch the feet of your partner. Hold one end of each resistance band and let your partner hold the other ends. Lean backwards with your back making a 45-degree angle with the floor. Start with your elbows glued to the side of your body and your arms leveled with your stomach. You and your partner should simultaneously raise your arms toward your chest. Lower your arms again, and then repeat the routine.

Push-Up High Five Target: shoulders, chest, biceps and triceps Face your partner arms length apart. Get in push-up position, hands directly under your shoulders, legs extended, abs engaged. Do a push-up, bending elbows 90 degrees. Push back up to starting position and give each other a high five, extending arm straight out, rather than up. Complete reps until fatigued.

The One couple workouts Target: legs, butt, back, abs and shoulders Stand facing each other. Extend your arms and grab each other’s wrist. Raise and extend your left leg while your partner does the same with his/her right leg. Slowly get into squat position while keeping the legs raised. Stand straight up and repeat the routine with the other leg. Do as many repetitions as you can.

Cloud nine couple workouts Target: butt and legs Stand in front of your partner about two feet away. You should get into squat positions, with arms bended at chest level, palms out. Let your partner jump high with arms extended overhead. As soon as he/she lands you should jump up. Once you landed, it will be your partner’s turn to jump again. Continue this alternate squatting and jumping until each of you completes at least 15 jumps.

Other fitness activities couples can try: Biking, kickboxing, tennis and boot camps.

Improve your Posture for your

Big Day

106 | October 2013

W

e all pass through that phase where we want to have the perfect body for a certain dress, if it is not our whole life’s phase. But for a bride to be, it is a challenge accepted to have that flat belly, those perfect toned arms and legs and that rounded backside. However, what sometimes brides usually forget about is their posture, when it is really the key to a perfectly aligned body.

Here are some exercises to improve your bridal posture: CHEST STRETCH Stretches the front of the upper body, which tends to get tight if you spend a lot of time slumped over a desk. Start position: Sit on an exercise ball and then walk your legs forward until your back is against the ball. Movement: Keep your neck parallel to the floor and extend your elbows back so your arms are also parallel to the floor. Your back should be draped over the ball. Gently pulse for a count of 20 seconds.

HIP FLEXOR STRETCH Stretches the muscles that lift your leg. These muscles can get tight if you sit most of the day. Start position: Stand tall facing the wall, with your toes about one foot from the wall. Bring the fitness ball to the side of your right knee. Put your right flexed knee on top of the ball while keeping your hips parallel to the wall. Movement: Slowly roll the ball away from the wall, bending your left knee and keeping your body completely straight. Do not lean forward. Try to keep your weight on your right side. Hold this pose for a count of 30. Repeat on the other side.

POWER EXTENSION Stretches the front of the body while strengthening your back muscles, glutes and hamstrings. Start position: Kneel behind the fitness ball with your feet flat on the wall. Drape your body over the ball. Movement: Straighten your legs, squeeze your glutes and lift your upper body up off the ball. Hold for a long count of 5. To move out of this pose, bend your knees and drape your body over the ball again. Repeat 5 times.

PLANK Strengthens your core muscles, which can get weak with poor posture habits. Start position: Lay on your stomach on a mat, with your feet flat against the wall. Get up on your elbows. Keep your neck straight. Movement: Lift up your entire body, stabilizing your body on your toes and forearms. Hold this position with

your legs, back, neck and head in alignment. Tighten your belly muscles and make sure you breathe; don not drop your head. It is normal for your body to shake. Hold for a count of 60 seconds. If you cannot hold it that long, lie down and rest for a count of 10, then rise back up, aiming for a total of 60 seconds in plank position.

PEEL UP Stretches your legs and back. Start position: From the plank position, peel yourself up from the floor by straightening your arms and extending your head and spine back into a cobra pose. Movement: Get up on your hands and knees and do the cat stretch by gently rounding your back up. Keeping your hands on the floor, place one foot on the floor, then the other, and slightly drop your buttocks towards the floor. Lift your low back, but do not straighten your legs, and gently, one vertebra at a time, roll yourself up, keeping your chin tucked, until you are standing -- then slowly unroll your neck. Stand straight with a slightly extended back and neck, arms out to the side and take a deep inhale.

Here are some tips you can practice daily: • Try to get up for a couple minutes every half hour and stretch, walk, or stand. • Every morning and night, lie down on the floor and make slow “snow angels” with your arms for two or three minutes. • Sitting up with good, tall posture and your shoulders dropped is a good habit to get into. Pilates and yoga can help you to stay sitting straight. • Start practicing yoga gradually and listen to how your body responds. Make sure your yoga teacher is sensitive to your needs and abilities, and available for feedback. • Vitamin D is essential for bone health, and may help us maintain our muscles too. • Eat healthy. We all know the bone benefits of calcium. It is recommended that women 19 to 50 years old get 1,000 milligrams of calcium daily.

With these exercises and tips together, you are definitely on your way to a happily ever after posture. October 2013 | 107

Nothing revs up the old digestive engine like cayenne. Cayenne pepper has the power to make any dish fiery hot, but it also has a subtle flavor-enhancing quality. There is some evidence that eating hot pepper increases metabolism and the appetite. Add a few shakes of cayenne pepper to potato salad, deviled eggs, chili, and other hot dishes such as stews and soups. Fennel is a familiar digestive aid, both for relieving stomach upset and for boosting the appetite. Ginger too helps stimulate a tired appetite, both through its properties and taste.

Eat Your Shampoo By: Noura Hassaballa Nutritional Consultant Ever wondered why Hollywood celebrities pay loads of money to have healthy glowing hair? From caviar shampoo to chocolate hair masks and the list goes on…It’s not called the crowning glory for nothing. A woman’s hair is something that plays a very important role in her life. It can also somehow affect her mood. Have you ever heard of a “Bad Hair 110 | October 2013

Day”? You never want to get on a woman’s nerve on a bad hair day, because really, that’s the last thing she needs. And because our hair is just like our body, it goes through changes all year long. Regardless of which product you use for your hair, it’s all about the food you eat; it comes from within. Of course there are other factors that can affect how your hair looks and feels like smoking, hormonal imbalance, environmental factors, excessive sun exposure, and also lack of sleep. It’s not too late; you can always reverse the status of your hair, unless it’s a medical condition that needs a doctor’s recommendation. Eating a balanced, assorted, protein rich diet will help you achieve the beautiful, healthy and shinny hair you’ve always dreamt of.

Let’s review together some of the best foods for your hair:

Salmon Rich in protein and vitamin D (both are the key to strong hair). Also, the amount of omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon are higher than other fish. Your body can’t make those fatty acids, which your body needs to grow hair. About 3% of the hair shaft is made up of these fatty acids. If you are not a big fan of salmon, you can try other types of fish like herring, sardines, trout, and mackerel, as well as avocado, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts.

Spinach It is a good source of iron, beta carotene, folate, and vitamin C. they help keep hair follicles healthy and scalp oils circulating.

Oysters Rich in zinc. Zinc deficiency can lead to hair loss (even in your eyelashes), as well as a dry flaky scalp. Zinc is also found in fortified cereals and whole grain breads, but oysters can boast a good level of protein too. Remember that 97% of your hair is made up of protein.

Eggs Eggs are a good source of protein. They are loaded with four of the best minerals for your hair such as: zinc, selenium, sulfur, and iron. Iron is especially important, because it helps cells carry oxygen to the hair follicles. And don’t forget that iron deficiency causes anemia, which is a major cause of hair loss.

Greek yogurt

Walnuts Rich in omega 3. Walnuts have a higher amounts of omega 3 fatty acids than any other type of nuts. Rich in biotin and vitamin E, which helps protect your cells from DNA damage. Since your hair doesn’t get much protection from the sun, this is a great source. It was also found that biotin helps in hair growth. People who have actually tried taking 5000 mcg of biotin daily, have noticed a great change in the rate their hair grows at; they also said that their hair grew longer.

Choose low fat Greek yogurt since it’s higher in protein than regular yogurt. Greek yogurt is made in a way that makes it retain much more nutrients than regular yogurt. It’s high in hair-friendly protein, vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid -- an ingredient you’ll often see on hair care product labels), and vitamin D. Some researches do link vitamin D to hair follicle health, but because there hasn’t been enough researches done we are not quit sure of the reason yet. Always remember that a healthy lifestyle combines all things together. A balanced diet along with exercise and keeping your body healthy is a great way to a healthy glowing skin and a beautiful lustrous hair. October 2013 | 111

Eat & Cook

To Love!

We all know that the food we eat can affect our health. Apart from that, we can also nurture our mental state, our mood which will reflect on the relationships with the people we are with. It may sound weird but we can say that Food and Love are connected. You are probably asking yourself how food can help to create love between the two. Does the preparation of food help build up the relationship?

Although the number of working woman is increasing, the number of men did not heat that level. Men often prefer to go out for a meal or to quickly grab ready to eat meals. Yet when they decide to cook men take the time to get ingredients and prepare the food. The kitchen becomes a place where they can experiment and relax. We still think that cooking is a women’s domestic activity. For men it is more of an avenue of entertainment. They are fascinated by the technology and the chemistry turning cooking into a performance. It is impressive to see a man cooking especially if he knows what he is doing. Been a good cook gives you an extra value. Women love it when man is a good cook, just like she loves it when he is a good dancer. One of the most impressive and memorable things a man can do for a woman is to serve her breakfast in bed. Something as simple as a cup of coffee, a croissant, and a little rose on the tray puts her in a special romantic mood for the rest of the day. Most women wish they could have breakfast in bed every morning, but the occasional surprise of breakfast in bed makes it even more special, especially on Valentine’s Day. If you want to make her fall in love with you for the first time, or all over again, cook for her. Valentine’s Day is a great day for this. Instead of taking her out

to the restaurant, stay at home and enjoy a seducing meal prepared by you. Cooking in front of her will be a part of the Valentine’s experience. Women enjoy watching a man cook for them and appreciate the effort taken to do so. It is a pleasure to see the transformation of goods into a beautiful dish. And even if it doesn’t turn out perfectly, she will appreciate it nevertheless. While cooking, pay attention to her, give her a smile, let her taste the food, and let her talk to you. The key to flirtation is to listen, make her feel beautiful and sexy. Do not be obsessed over how you appear in the kitchen. Just relax, have fun, and waltz around with your inspiration. By choosing the right ingredients and the dish you can create a sensual, exiting atmosphere. Scientific tests have proven that some aromas can cause a greater effect on the body than the actual ingestion of foods. Asparagus, vanilla and coco have the aphrodisiac power. In 19th century France, bridegrooms were served three courses of the sexy spears at their prenuptial dinners. Apparently for a good reason: asparagus is a great source of potassium, fiber, vitamin B6, vitamins A and C, and thiamin and folic acid. Cacao is extremely rich in magnesium, phosphorous, antioxidants, arginines and libidoboosting methylxanthines, making it a truly impressive superfood. Cacao also contains phenylethylamine, the “love chemical” that causes dopamine to be released from your brain’s pleasure center.

For the dessert, you can choose tiramisu. The translation of the name Italian tiramisù (tirami sù) means “pick-me-up” (metaphorically, “make me happy”). This may refer to the caffeine in the espresso and effect of cocoa used in the recipe. The dessert should be made in advance. Finally, the setting for enjoying the meal is as important as cooking the dish with care and love. Use red and gold of a sunset lit with the warm glow of candlelight to create an exotic ambience and romantic mood. Use vanilla scented candles and don’t forget the flowers. When you put all these things together, it will make for a remarkable evening you both to enjoy. Sharing food in such a loving, romantic atmosphere will bring the closeness. Ideally this article should be in a men’s magazine. So help him out and leave the page open and located in a place where he will be sure to read it.

Brides & Grooms of

by: Natasci Paolucci Professional Fitness Coach

here are pairs that are meant to be. You can tell. They are great by themselves but they are even better together. Here is a couple (yes, pun intended)…

The colorful: Tomatoes & Avocados: Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, a pigment-rich antioxidant, which is known to reduce cancer risk and cardiovascular disease. Avocadoes, on the other hand, are rich in fats, which make antioxydants make more bioavailable. Such a food synergy makes a strong case for adding tomatoes to your guacamole! But this also explains why, especially in the Mediterranean diet, we drizzle olive oil over fresh tomatoes. Actually, let’s go a little further. When it comes to salads, don’t choose low-fat dressings. Indeed, a recent study showed that salads eaten with full-fat dressings help with the absorption of another type of antioxydant called lutein, which is found in green leafy vegetables and benefits vision. If you don’t like heavy salad dressing, however, sprinkle walnuts, pistachios, or grated cheese over your greens.

The traditional : Oatmeal & Orange Juice: We have never questioned this very English breakfast… and there is no reason we should! In effect, a study from the Antioxidants Research Lab at the USDA shows that consuming vitamin C (which can be found in fresh orange juice) while eating a bowl of unprocessed oatmeal cleans your arteries and prevents heart attacks with two times as much efficacy as if you had either by itself. This can be explained by the organic compounds in both foods, called phenols, which will stabilize your LDL cholesterol (the so-called “bad” cholesterol) when consumed together.

The dip: Apples & Chocolate Apples: Actually, ‘Red Delicious’ especially are well known to be high in an antiinflammatory flavonoid called quercetin. It is found in the skin, so you should make sure that you buy organic ones and avoid pesticides or chemicals, which concentrate in it. By itself, quercetin has been shown to reduce the risk of allergies, heart attack, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and prostate and lung cancers. Chocolate (just like grapes, red wine, and green tea) on the other hand, contain the flavonoid catechin, an antioxidant that reduces the risks for atherosclerosis and cancer. Together the two types of flavonoids loosen clumpy blood platelets, improving cardiovascular health and providing anticoagulant activity! Oh chocolate addicts, yes you can! 114 | October 2013

The zesty: Lemon & Kale: Vitamin C is known to help make plantbased iron more absorbable. It converts much of the plant-based iron into a form that’s similar to what’s found in fish and red meats, which provides a healthy alternative for vegetarians. Remember that iron carries oxygen to red blood cells and this is very important. Also, Vitamin C can be found more or less naturally in food (no need for supplements) such as citrus fruits, leafy green vegetables, strawberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, and broccoli, and getting plantbased iron from leeks, beet greens, kale, spinach, mustard greens, Swiss chard, and fortified cereals. So whether you’re cooking dark greens or making a salad, be sure to add some lemon juice. You’ll increase your immunity and muscle strength with more punch than by eating these foods separately.

The PBJ: Peanuts & Whole Wheat: Kids love them and so will you! According to Diane Birt, Ph.D., a professor at Iowa State University and a food synergy expert, the specific amino acids absent in wheat are actually present in peanuts! What a happy coincidence, right? As if we needed any more excuse to indulge in peanut butter sandwich… You need, and very rarely receive in one meal, the complete chain of amino acids (the best form of protein) to build and maintain muscle. This problem becomes worse as you grow old or when you adopt a vegetarian diet. So, the peanut-butter sandwich isn’t junk food but it has to satisfy a couple of requirements. It should be prepared with wholewheat bread (not white) and eaten in moderation (at most once a day). It is also better to get natural, and organic, peanut butter. Avoid added sugar, chemical ingredients you can’t pronounce.

The spicy: Turmeric & Black Pepper: The first is a tangy yellow South Asian spice and it has long been studied for its anticancer properties, anti-inflammatory effects, and tumor-fighting activities. Actually, the active agent in the spice is a plant chemical, or polyphenol, called curcumin. But the issue is that, when eaten alone, it is not very bioavailable (your body does not really know what t do of all this goodness). But there’s a solution! Indeed, adding black pepper to turmeric enhances curcumin’s bioavailability by 1,000 times. This is thanks to black pepper’s hot property called piperine. This is probably the one reason that curry has both turmeric (curcumin) and black pepper combined!

The crunchy: Almonds & Yogurt: What a way to improve on the traditional snack! We already know that good fats help increase lycopene absorption (as with the tomato and avocado example) but, actually, this is true for most essential vitamins. They are activated and absorbed best when eaten with fat. Vitamins that are considered fat-soluble include A (carrots, broccoli and peas), D (fish, milk, yogurt, and orange juice), and E (sweet potato and spinach). So toss some almonds into your yogurt and make sure it is full-fat dairy produce!

So here you have the proof that sweet love truly exists. So go for it, have the most delicious wedding!

Cooking

Here Comes The … Cookies! Ingredients: • • • • • • • •

BY: Maha Alfy Professional Caterer

1 cup salted butter (softened) 1 cup sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1 large whole egg 1 egg yolk 3/4 tsp. vanilla extract 1/2 tsp. almond extract 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted

Directions: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter, sugar and salt until light and fluffy with mixer at medium speed. Next add the egg yolk, beat it some more, then add the whole egg. Mix in the vanilla and almond. Add flour and beat on low until well-combined. Do not overbeat. The dough will be sticky! Divide the dough in half and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least an hour, but I usually do mine the day before. When you’re ready to bake, allow the dough to come to room temp for at least 10 minutes, and then knead it until it gets back to a smooth texture. Preheat over to 375°. Sprinkle your work surface and rolling pin with flour. For best results, roll the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. I love to use my Wilton fondant rolling pin with the guide rings to get my dough even! Continue sprinkling flour when needed to prevent dough from sticking. Use your cutters to cut the cookies into the desired shapes then place on cookie sheets covered with parchment paper. Now don’t skip this step! Stick the cookies (on the sheets) back in the freezer for exactly 10 minutes to allow them to re-chill. This will keep your cookies perfectly shaped! When they’re chilled, bake for 8-10 minutes (depending on size) for the perfect cookie! I rarely get browned edges with these cookies - they hold their shape, taste yummy, and are not too crunchy! After trying multiple recipes, this has to be my favorite!

Icing sugar Ingredients: • 1 cup powdered sugar • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla • 1-2 tablespoons milk

Directions: Mix powdered sugar, vanilla and milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until spreadable (mixture will thicken slightly as it sets). 118 | October 2013

The cookie cutter I used is an R&M Wedding Dress Cookie Cutter. The piping was done with #2 and #3 round tips and I used Pearl Luster Dust to make them shimmer! Use fondant in white or pink, have them cut with the cookie cutter and stuck over the cookie with the icing sugar, which you can use for decorating patterns over the fondant as well. Use to decorate also with edible pearls or readymade flowers available at cake decorating shops.

Cooking A Must-cook Recipe:

Tangerine-Marinated Breast of Duck with Wheatberries Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

6 Boneless duck breast halves, skin on 22mL Shallots, chopped fine 15mL Soy sauce 60mL Tangerine juice 1/4 tsp Grated tangerine zest Pinch cinnamon Pinch crushed star anise 375g Wheatberries with pecans As needed Tangerine supremes 180mL Oriental vinaigrette (optional ) 375g Whole wheatberries, rinsed and soaked overnight in cold water 2 L Water, cold 60mL Olive oil 90g Chopped pecans Pinch salt

Preparing wheatberries: 1. Drain the soaking water from the wheatberries. Add the wheatberries to the cold water in a pot. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover and simmer until the wheatberries are tender but still slightly crunchy, about 1 hour. Remove from heat and allow to stand, covered, 10 minutes. Drain. 2. Heat the olive oil in a saute pan. Add the pecans and saute about 1 minute. 3. Add the cooked wheatberries. Toss over heat until the mixture is hot. Season to taste.

Directions: 1. With a sharp knife, score the duck skin in a diamond pattern. Cut through the skin and into the layer of fat but not into the meat. (This is easiest to do if the duck is chilled.) 2. In a nonreactive container, combine the shallots, soy sauce, tangerine juice and zest, cinnamon, and star anise and mix together. 3. Add the duck breasts, turning them to coat on both sides. Refrigerate 2–4 hours. 4. Remove the breasts from the marinade. Pat them dry with clean towels. Discard the marinade and any pieces of star anise clinging to the meat. 5. Pan-fry the breasts skin side down in a saute pan over moderately high heat about 6 minutes, or until the skin is well browned and crisp and much of the fat has rendered. Turn over and pan-fry another 4 minutes. The breasts should still be rare. 6. Remove from the pans and let rest 5 minutes in a warm place. 7. Place 30g wheatberries on each plate. 8. Cut each duck breast diagonally into thin slices. Fan the slices out, leaning them against the mound of wheatberries. 9. Top the wheatberries with a few tangerine supremes. 10.If desired, drizzle a little vinaigrette onto the plate around the duck breast. October 2013 | 119

Love & Relationships

What does it take to have happy, successful relationships?

A 120 | October 2013

lthough love is a powerful impetus for husbands and wives to help and support each other making each other happy, being a family, it does not in itself create the substance of the relationship. The personal qualities and skills that are crucial to sustain it and make it grow are: commitment, sensitivity, generosity, consideration, loyalty, responsibility, and trustworthiness. The couple need to cooperate, compromise, and follow through with joint decisions. They have to be resilient, accepting, and forgiving. They need to be tolerant of each other’s flaws, mistakes, and peculiarities. As these ‘virtues’ are cultivated over a period of time, the marriage develops and matures.

What does it take to have happy, successful relationships? Misunderstanding what is needed to create successful, long-term relationships is another hidden cause of our stress. Let’s go through ten important ingredients for creating successful relationships of all types. 1) Purpose: The best purpose for marriage, or for any other long-term relationship, is to forget about what you might get in return and focus on what you can give to the other person. 2) Commitment: We need to live our lives consistent with our word. It is a decision to always rise above our fleeting thoughts, feelings, moods and situations and to deal with any problem or conflict in a way that enhances, rather than diminishes, the quality of our relationships. 3) Acceptance: Most of us have trouble accepting others for who they are, because we make the mistake by believing that happiness and success is solely dependent on others. When you don’t accept people exactly as they are i.e. when you set out to change them, improve them, criticize them, or make them into someone different, they stop feeling loved and appreciated by you. On the other hand when you grant them the freedom to be the way they are, they feel loved, nurtured and secure whenever they are in your presence. 4) Trust: It is another essential ingredient for successful relationships. Since our relationships are products of our promises and commitments, it is mandatory that our partners trust our basic integrity. It is also essential that we conduct ourselves in a trustworthy manner, and that we demand the same from anyone who wants to have a relationship with us. 5) Communication: Good communication is not merely the sharing of experiences, thoughts or feelings. To create successful, long-term relationships you need to acknowledge that two people never experience the same event or reality in exactly the same way. Each has his or her own “internal reality” about whatever may have happened, and these internal realities must always be taken into account. 6) Negotiation: Marriage and other relationships are on going series of negotiations. Obviously, many minor differences and conflicts must be worked out. Requests must frequently be made of each other, and the option to decline or renegotiate certain requests must occasionally be exercised. Any conflicts or differences of opinions should be resolved in a win-win manner and each person should be committed to what works for the relationship (as opposed to what works for them, what they personally want, or what would make them happy or comfortable). 7) Surrender: Another key ingredient for successful relationships is surrender. This is not the type of

surrender where you are forced to do something someone else wants. It is a voluntary type of surrender whereby you wilfully give up control to someone other than yourself. One form of such surrender is choosing to go along with the thoughts, ideas, and opinions of your partner. This involves voluntarily giving up two of your most cherished desires:Your desire to be right; and your desire to be in control. 8) Forgiveness: With regard to our long-term, interpersonal relationships, forgiveness takes on an even larger role. Generally, forgiveness is a decision to let go of resentment and thoughts of revenge. The act that hurt or offended you might always remain a part of your life, but forgiveness can lessen its grip on you and help you focus on other, positive parts of your life. Forgiveness can even lead to feelings of understanding, empathy and compassion for the one who hurt you.Forgiveness doesn’t mean that you deny the other person’s responsibility for hurting you, and it doesn’t minimize or justify the wrong. You can forgive the person without excusing the act. Forgiveness brings a kind of peace that helps you go on with life. 9) Responsibility: It is also a major cornerstone of successful, long-term relationships. One of the central problems in all of our relationships is how we respond when things don’t go as we want. Do we blame other people, outside influences, or our relationship itself whenever we experience a lack of satisfaction? Or do we view such problems as signals that we need to learn and grow ourselves? Are we going to try to change or control our partner in order to be happy, or are we going to recognize that our own happiness comes primarily from the contexts and commitments we generate or fail to generate within ourselves? 10) Support: The last ingredient to be considered is support. Here are just a few interpretations: Physical comfort and emotional support, Esteem support, Informational support (giving advice), and Tangible support (helping out). Unfortunately, it’s too much of the wrong kind of support that wreaks the most havoc in relationships. No matter what the situation is, dialog is the key. Couples will be happier if they learn how to say, “This is how I’m feeling, and this is how you can help me.”

Mother & Child

Like Mother, Like Daughter!

Today I opened my mouth and my mother came out!

“I hate when my mom keeps telling me to tidy my room!” a phrase we hear a lot of girls say and after time passes, the girl grows up to be a mom and catches herself doing the same thing: nag about tiding the room! Well, that’s a very minor example of how we all turn to be our mothers later in life, till we find ourselves become our mothers and our brains scream so loud: “Today you opened your mouth and your mother came out!” It seems inevitable that we would all share more than a few similarities with our mothers. But now researchers have pinpointed the age of 32 as the time when we finally start to take in more of our maternal influences. A poll of 1,000 adults revealed that at that age they started to use phrases inherited from their mothers during their upbringing. Sayings included ‘Don’t make a face like that, if the wind changes, you’ll stay like it.’ Many began to use words and phrases from their mother’s era. Other people in the survey said they acquired habits such as worrying, stocking up on groceries watching soaps and being opinionated. The findings were highest in women with two thirds saying that they became more like their mothers at 32-years-old. Just a third of men said they inherited their mother’s idiosyncrasies. The findings emerged in a poll by the card makers Hallmark which looked at people’s behavior that is passed down through the generations.

What Type Of Mother Are You Or Will You Be? That’s a big question! This may be music to your ears or, perhaps, it may make you cringe a little and remember how you swore you would never be that way. Yet, for many women, the imprint of their mother is an important, and inescapable, part of who you are. Are You Destined to be Like Your Mother? Another big question, in some respects, yes. For instance: If a mother smokes, her daughter is more likely to smoke. If a mother is unsatisfied with her 122 | October 2013

body image, her daughter is more likely to be as well. In fact, mothers who diet are nearly twice as likely to have a daughter that suffers from an eating disorder. If a mother is obese, her daughter is 10 times more likely to be chronically overweight or obese (not due to genetics but to copying poor lifestyle choices). In terms of genetics, you get half your genes from your mom and half from your dad, so your mom’s biology does impact your own. However, lifestyle choices and habits – your decision to smoke, eat healthy, look on the sunny side of life – can all influence your future, too. So virtually nothing is set in stone and most

Instead, often similarities like those noted above are not written into your genes like your hair color or height, they’re habits and tendencies that you picked up from your mom somewhere along the way. What this means is that you may very well be like your mom, and if that’s a positive thing in your mind so much the better. But many daughters actually fear that they will grow up to be like their moms, especially during adolescence. It’s so common there’s actually a name for it: matrophobia; the fear of growing up like one’s own mother. If this latter scenario applies to you, and although you love your mom you want to run your life differently, there’s good news: you can. While most daughters will continue to crave their mother’s closeness and approval well into middle-age and beyond, you, and only you, can make the choices that shape your lifestyle. Mother-daughter relationships are complex and diverse. Some mothers and daughters are best friends. Others talk once a week. Some see each other weekly; others live in different countries. Some spar regularly. Some avoid conflict. Others talk through everything. And undoubtedly, there’s a hint of all these things in most relationships. There also are ups and downs, no matter how positive (or prickly) the relationship. Roni Cohen-Sandler, Ph.D, psychologist and coauthor of “I’m Not Mad, I Just Hate You! A New Understanding of Mother-Daughter Conflict” sees three primary complaints that daughters have about their moms: Moms try to parent them and are overly critical and demanding. From moms’ perspective, daughters don’t listen to them, make poor choices and have no time for them. How To Have A Strong Mother- Daughter Relationship? Whatever your relationship with your mother or daughter, remember you can always make improvements. Read on and apply these tips, and remember it’s never too late! • Make the first move. Don’t wait for your daughter to make the first move. Think about how you feel in the relationship and what you can do to change.” • Change yourself. Many think that the only way to improve a relationship is for the other person to change their ways. But you aren’t chained to their

• •

actions; you can change your own reactions and responses. Have realistic expectations. Both moms and daughters often have idealistic expectations about their relationship. So set realistic expectation to overcome disappointments. Communicate. Lack of communication is a common challenge with moms and daughters. In some ways they can be so close or feel so close that they believe that each of them should know how the other one feels. Be an active listener. Active listening is reflecting back what the other person is saying, instead of assuming you already know. When you reflect back what your mom or daughter is saying, you’re telling her that she’s being heard and that you understand. Also, listen to the feelings underlying the message. Repair damage quickly. One of the key principles in sustaining healthy and satisfying relationships is to repair damage quickly. Learn to forgive. Forgiveness is “an individual act. It differs from reconciliation, which takes both people and isn’t always possible. Forgiving someone isn’t saying that what happened is OK. It’s not condoning, pardoning or minimizing the impact. Agree to disagree. Moms and daughters disagree on many topics, such as marriage, parenting and career, and they usually try to convince the other to change those opinions. Moms feel threatened and rejected that their daughters are making different decisions. Daughters think their moms disapprove of them and get defensive. Realize that there are some topics that you’ll never agree on. And that’s OK. Stick to the present. Moms and daughters tend to have an old argument that runs like a broken record in the background. It becomes their default disagreement. Instead, avoid bring[ing] up old gripes from the past, and try to focus on the present. Set boundaries. Even when the relationship is negative or unhealthy, there’s still a powerful bond. One way to ease into reconnecting with your daughter is by setting clear-cut boundaries. Boundaries are key for any healthy relationship.

The gem, which displays flashes of breathtaking rainbow colors floating inside its body are due to the interaction of its structure with light, which is considered as one of the substitute alternatives to diamonds as it displays rainbow lights when passing through a florescent light. When all else fails, we manage to turn the crying table to a laughing one. Tahyees Mish Rekhees is a book that collected all the jokes that appeared since January 25 Revolution till June 30, 2013. What is unique about this book is that you can open any page and it will certainly crack you up. Eman Korra, the author, managed to put a smile on our faces in a time where everything is falling out of place. For this, we thank Eman for bringing us all back together as one, even if it was just in a book. Available at Diwan Bookstore 130 | October 2013
