CLOSURES

A

nother year is drawing to a close, and here we are turning the page on the previous chapters of our story, ready to fill the very first blank pages of upcoming ones. Every year, we are left with memories, happy ones and sad ones, we get engraved with new scars, but we also stand strong in the face of every storm that comes our way. Ready to welcome a new year, we pave the way for new lessons and experiences; putting a closure for anything that doesn’t serve us, save us, or bring out the best in us.

Today, at this very moment, if you are to promise yourself one thing, it is to find your closures and to let go of what once was. Whether it is a relationship, a job, a stage of life, a behavior, or a way of thinking; set yourself free from whatever blocks your way, or creates yet another obstacle in your journey. Honor your past experiences, acknowledge them as your toughest and best teacher, learn the lesson, and make way for new beginnings.

Closures don’t always have to be explicit, learn to open your eyes wide enough and read the signs. A closure is knowing when it’s time to move ahead with your life, to free yourself from anything that drags you down. Your closure can be the time you realize that you won’t always find the answers for the questions that kept you sleepless for nights, and yet make your peace with the fact that some things will always be left unknown, and that in itself, is a closure. A closure is knowing that life is unpredictable, gives us no guarantees, and will always surprise us when we least expect it. Yet amidst this whirlwind of mystery, we should always learn to accept, let go, carry on, and aim for new beginnings.

With a new year knocking your door, start fresh, strong, and resilient. Put a closure to what keeps you from moving, hinders your growth, and drains your energy. Make way for beautiful things to take place.

W

e sometimes view fashion as a luxury that we don’t possess all the time, but that is not true. Clothing is our second skin, a piece of iconography defining who we are, where we come from and no matter how we try to exclude ourselves from fashion, the decision we take daily to buy, dress, wash, mend, lend or give up on our garments has a profound impact on the planet that we can’t overlook. So, in an attempt-from us at Ladybird-to start 2019 with a positive approach, here are our wishes for the fashion field.

First let’s highlight the areas of concern up the fashion department “en nuestra casa” Where is the race heading?

Fashion has taken a shortcut aiming to reach consumers and cater for their needs more frequently, fast fashion models, conglomerates and luxury brands produce from 6 up to 24 collections per year which means more wasted resources many of which are nonrenewable, more incinerated products at the end of each year and more buying of unnecessary products on customers’ behalf. People nowadays buy 60% more than they used to and don’t keep clothes for half their estimated lives. A sector that struggles throughout the process is small, genuine and local businesses as well as craftsmen who can’t keep up 18 | DECEMBER 2018

with the fierce competition and are susceptible to being copied or run over by bigger, more established businesses. We do believe in the saying “Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them” by Marc Jacobs and it makes us wonder when will we push the brakes, learn where we are heading and then act considerately upon it.

Earth is what we all have in common Maybe it isn’t a threat when you look from a distance but a closer look at fashion shows us that it is the second largest polluting industry to our planet.

The increase in grazing for acquiring quality cashmere, wool and leather as well as cutting down forests for production of fabrics like viscose also have contributed to environmental problems through loss of land

and biodiversity. And although entities have started initiatives such as committing to use of organic cotton, banning fur and dedicating resources to research alternatives for implementing sustainability, more action is demanded to reverse the deterioration spiral.

A stand for the human race Although the world is marching towards equality, the fashion field seems distant from the crowds; it happens to be a major player in creating modern day slavery and inequality in terms of income and working conditions especially when it comes to women occupying more than 70% of the professions there. The fact that there is a “mean girls” attitude and a “you can’t sit with

e tuned into the latest fashion shoot at The Nile Ritz-Carlton, Cairo combining poles of the fashion industry evolving on the banks of the Nile, who not only wowed us with their impressive talent but also gave us a taste of their field work. Here are bits and pieces of our conversation with the fine lady; Zeynab Azzam and the amazing team behind the scenes.

WHAT IS IT TRULY LIKE BEING A FASHION MODEL? Well then, let me tell you more about my journey through the ups and downs to get a good feel of how it’s really like. In the beginning, I went through a bit of a rough patch because at that time there weren’t that much credible modeling agencies as there are nowadays and truth be told I didn’t hire a manager right away which meant that I had to do it all on my own; scouting for jobs, setting the terms and getting the job done. When you present yourself as your own boss lady, you get mistaken for being too strict and assertive while in fact you are striving for a more professional image and learning along the way how to stand up for yourself. Of course this lead to a lot of rejections, unhealthy comparisons to esteemed colleagues in the field and a background question that spoke through their eyes louder than words “Who does she think she is?”, but that didn’t stop me for I had determination. I learned to achieve the balance between what was needed and what I wanted for myself and when I built a good name and reputation, things got incredibly easier. Perks of having such a job is meeting new, interesting and wildly creative people every day, they feed your soul with their artistic sense and enrich your experience with more than just shots for your portfolio.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE THE CONSTITUENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL SHOOT? A Clear starting point is key to a great shoot, don’t shy from using your voice in listing your professional needs and have the whole team do the same. Make sure that everyone is on the same page together and never underestimate the power or role of any of your team members. Understanding the work thoroughly before the shoot is one thing and the shoot day is another, you have to be up for any crisis that falls in hand and meet it with a smile and “we can do this” attitude. Creativity and a friendly environment are all you need as motivation to achieve the highest quality imagery capturing emotions from everyone there.

First, I am absolutely thrilled to see that happening for us here and couldn’t be happier to see new faces and diversity finally hitting the modeling industry in Egypt.

Second and most importantly my advice is comprehended in one word “originality” that is what you have to take an oath to embody if you want to be the next big thing. You have to stay true to yourself, learn when to say no and be ready to collaborate with other talents available in the field; I mean that is what I did back in the old days when all doors seemed shut. You also got to have faith that hard work will pay off eventually so don’t give up on yourself, go out there and create new content that defines you with compassion for people and circumstances they go through for maximum audience engagement.

For my own experience, I didn’t want to be just another pretty face in a shoot or advertisement; I wanted to be more than that. You may call it career shift or highlight as you previously described it, but I call it growing from a modeling preset mold to modeling with influence and power to affect and be affected by people. I love the fact that now when I get jobs, it is because I am a taste maker and a style icon to my community and fans family and I am willing to go an extra mile with a new project under my name in the horizon to reach the highest levels of self-actualization, I mean that is what we all strive to do, right?

EXERCISING THROUGH LOWER BACK PAIN We’ve all suffered it one way or another, from bad sitting habits throughout the day, long hours in front of pcs to abrupt reflexes that all add to the chronic problem disguising as pain at your lower back. This common form of torment knocks on the doors of adulthood very frequently causing discomfort and motion restriction to its bearer and while some say rest is the right path to consider along with good medication and proper vitamin B intake, it is not the only path to relieve the pain.

3.HYPEREXTENSIONS Lie face down on the floor keeping your hand on the side; maintain your lower body’s position while slightly raising your chest off the floor. Hold position for a couple of minutes then release and repeat.

Our brains are created to help us survive, which would work perfectly in case we are facing real threats like a dog chasing us in the street or a tight deadline at work.

However, in real life, the brain (unless trained) can interpret anything missing as a threat to our survival while it’s not.

2. Your ego is engaged. We meet many people and we constantly check the news on social media specially on our free times, while our egos (unless tamed) would always want to be the best. That’s why we find ourselves sometimes automatically comparing things to things and ourselves to others.

3. .A habitual thinking pattern is taking place. These energies are our physical, mental, and emotional energies. First understand what consumes your energy and your best way to recharge. For example, are you

3.BE PRESENT Instead of focusing on resisting the thoughts that interrupt your quality time, shift your focus to what is happening in the moment. You will notice that most thoughts will be concerned with either past or future event. Being mindful means being totally present in the current moment or activity. Some of the techniques is to use our senses in what is taking place in the moment. For example, if we are having breakfast, we can focus on (tasting) how food really is by chewing it slower than how we usually do.

Action: Pick one time or activity in your day, in which you decide to be mindful and deliberately use your senses to enjoy.

Remember: Thoughts will keep distracting you, don’t push them away, instead shift focus every time you are distracted to what is presently happening by using your senses.

Only when you learn how to train your brain, that you’ll learn how to live in the now and enjoy a long lasting holiday effect.

1. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY AND WHEN YOU’VE DECIDED TO BECOME AN INSTRUCTOR Well, at start and like all teenagers do, I struggled with weight loss. I felt chubby and no matter what diet or fitness routine I incorporated as a means to a healthier life style, I still couldn’t manage to shed stubborn fat at some areas around my body.

Frustration sunk when I saw that those plans worked for other people than myself nevertheless, I persisted. Of course I learnt later that there were many variables to take into account like body type and hormones. Truth is, being out of shape might have gotten me started but my passion towards training and grit in learning kept me going. my own hero, took courses, got certified and the rest is history! And, If I ever get a chance, I would definitely do it all over again because it might have been hard but totally worth it!

2. MAINTAINING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CAN BE VERY CHALLENGING, ESPECIALLY WITH OUR BUSY LIVES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO TRAIN MORE? Yes, it is but it is not impossible. You ought to be prepared and not to give into the hunger monster dwelling within. Have nutritious meals prepped for a whole week when you have extra time to spare or as a backup plan have some snack saviors as I call them.

Try things like nuts, protein bars and dark chocolate cubes with over 90% cocoa along with a rich cup of coffee, these snacks help boost your energy levels without ruining your meal plan.

3. WOMEN CAN STRUGGLE WITH WEIGHT LOSS ESPECIALLY, POSTPARTUM. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE… First, let me just say here’s a standing ovation to all mama’s out there who went or are going through the pregnancy experience, I am truly inspired by your strength. Second and with regards to my own experience, I won’t lie to you there were ups and downs throughout the journey. It was enjoyable at points and tiring at others but depression kicked in over weight gain through the last phase of my pregnancy and that’s when I lost a bit of my commitment to health bound plans and started giving into my cravings mistaken that this would give me happiness. Word through experience ladies, don’t do that! I struggled with digestion problems due to the unbalanced diet I was mastering and couldn’t wait to give birth just to get back on track. It took me a while to get there as I witnessed some breastfeeding complications but I got through it by listening to my body, eating clean and training mean. I normally don’t apply that last part with my trainees to help them gradually lose weight and have a steady milk supply. All in all, it was a great learning experience that helped me and others around me.

4. IF YOU’LL DEFINE WHAT YOU DO BRIEFLY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? I’d like to think that my manifesto in life is empowering women by boosting their selfconfidence, increasing their strength threshold and making the phrase beautiful inside out a fact they live by.

5. AND WHAT DO YOU DREAM OF ACHIEVING THROUGH YOUR CAREER? I dream of being the women’s personal trainer of the year every year not because I strive to be the best at what I do but because I want to support women at all stages and phases of their lives. Age is really just a number, whether it is a teenager or an 80 year old woman; the struggle with weight is real and the mental and physical challenges that come with it are vigorous but that won’t stop me from working hard to restore women’s faith in themselves. I also want to cater for women with health issues that demand more care and rigor towards them, having high affection and enthusiasm for your career is a great thing but working for real human causes is priceless and that’s exactly what I want to do.

A Sweet Treat For The Holiday Season Christmas Fudge

Ingredients: Cooking spray 2 3/4 c. chocolate chips 1 (14-oz.) can sweetened condensed milk 2 tbsp. heavy cream 4 tbsp. butter 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1/4 tsp. kosher salt 3 tbsp. Christmas sprinkles Directions: 1.Line an 8�-x-8� baking pan with parchment paper and grease with cooking spray. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt chocolate, condensed milk, butter, cream, vanilla, and salt together. Stir until smooth then pour into prepared pan.

2.Top with sprinkles and refrigerate until set, 2 hours. Cut into squares to serve.

Gingerbread Fudge Ingredients: 12 oz. white chocolate, melted 1 c. sweetened condensed milk 1 tsp. ground nutmeg 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 tsp. ground ginger 1/2 tbsp. red sprinkles 1/2 tbsp. green sprinkles Directions: 1.In a large bowl, mix together white chocolate and sweetened condensed milk. Add nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger and stir until combined. Stir in almost all sprinkles (leave some to sprinkle on top) until combined.

2.Using a spatula, transfer fudge into a parchment-lined glass baking dish and smooth over top. Sprinkle with remaining and let sit until firm, at least one hour.

(Transfer to the fridge to speed up the process.) Cut into squares and enjoy.

Candy Cane Marshmallow Dippers Ingredients: Mini candy canes 10 marshmallows 1 1/2 c. chocolate chips, melted 5 mini candy canes, crushed Hot chocolate, for serving Directions: 1.Line a small baking tray with parchment paper. Stick straight side of candy canes into the center of marshmallows.

2.Dip marshmallows into melted chocolate and sprinkle with crushed candy canes. Place on prepared baking sheet and place into refrigerator to harden, about 10 minutes.

3.Serve with hot chocolate.

Hot Cocoa Brownie Cups Ingredients: FOR THE CUPS 1 box brownie mix, plus ingredients called for on box 10 oz. mini marshmallows FOR THE TOPPING 1/3 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 c. chocolate-covered pretzels Red, green, and white sprinkles Directions: 1.Preheat oven to 350° and grease a cupcake pan with cooking spray.

2.Using an ice cream scoop, fill each well in cupcake pan about 3/4 full with brownie batter.

3.Bake until edges look set but centers still look a little undercooked, 12 to 15 minutes.

4.Remove brownie cups from oven and press marshmallows into centers. Return to oven until marshmallows puff and melt, 3 to 5 minutes.

HOW TO TELL IT’S TIME TO WALK AWAY FROM A RELATIONSHIP? By: Sarah Khaled

Relationships come with many ups, as well as a multitude of downs. One day you and your significant other could be in complete harmonic bliss, but on another day you could find that you are frustrated and irritated with one another.

In the throes of passion, it can be difficult to read the signs of whether or not your significant other is truly “the one” for you. It’s natural to be in an argument and contemplate whether or not you’re actually compatible together, but sometimes, things take a turn and all of this reassurance and security can go out the door. Your significant other is supposed to love you and make that clear with communication and action. You shouldn’t be up at night wondering if your partner actually loves you or you just wasted all of this time with the wrong person.

There are definite signs to look out for that could potentially signal the end of your relationship. At which point can you determine if a relationship should end? What must happen for you to realize that it’s time to part ways?

1) THE ROMANCE IS DECLINING Less frequent sex, zero date nights, lack of cuddling — it’s becoming far too clear that your partner’s desire to be near you has greatly diminished. “It may just be a temporary reaction to stress, but if it’s been going on for some time, it could indicate a relationship decline”.

Couples should have lives outside of the relationship — friends, hobbies, interests, etc. that don’t involve each other. It’s normal, and healthy.

What’s not normal, is a partner who chooses his or her friends over you nearly 100 percent of the time, so that is a really alarming sign that your partner doesn’t want to be with you.

2) THEY DON’T MAKE TIME FOR YOU You have a sneaking suspicion that your partner is ignoring you, or is coming up with fake reasons to bail on plans. Since couples should want to see each other, this doesn’t exactly feel right.

“You don’t need to spend every second with your significant other, but you really need to spend quality time together whenever you can”.

5) THEY RARELY CALL OR TEXT TO CHECK ON YOU We all know it takes less than thirty seconds to send a text and a minute to call and say hi,” so it doesn’t bode well for the relationship when your partner can’t be bothered to pick up the phone.

3) YOU NOTICE MORE CRITICISM THAN COMPLIMENTS It’s normal for couples to pick on each other every now and then, but when things get mean or rude, it could be a sign that your partner is thinking about leaving. “You feel disconnected ... and you need to bring your thoughts and feelings in line.”

Check if your partner is getting mad at every little thing.

6) THINGS HAVE GOTTEN AWKWARD Your partner used to chat happily for hours. Now, things feel a bit forced. “Everyone is awkward and walking on eggshells 24/7, and there are continuous ‘reasons’ not to do things together”.

7) THEY DON’T TALK ABOUT THE FUTURE When it comes to talks of the future, your partner seems to view it as more of a solo event. “If he favors the pronoun ‘I’ over ‘we’ and doesn’t want to commit to anything more than a month in advance, then he’s probably not thinking long term”.

8) YOU DON’T FEEL SUPPORTED Supporting a partner is difficult and time consuming, so someone who is ready to checkout may find it impossible to assemble the strength to support you at any given time.

9) YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE A PRIORITY What’s the giant takeaway from all of this? Above anything else, you want to feel like a priority in your partner’s life. When that’s not the case, it’s a huge, glaring sign that they are probably losing interest.

I know that relationships can be hard to walk away from, especially for the ones where we invest so much of our time in. The guilt prolongs our decisions and for some people, staying seems easier than letting go, but the more time you take to make the decision to leave, the more you steal from your happiness jar.

Nothing hurts more than letting go of somebody who’s touched your heart, but nothing elevates as much as being free to grow.

The only person who can tell you when to walk away from a relationship is you – the moment you feel you’re ready to fly higher, spread your wings and make the leap. Knowing when to walk away from a relationship will not only set you free but it will give you a second chance to be truly happy.

ADRIANA LIMA WALKED HER LAST VS SHOW The longest serving model at Victoria Secret, Adriana Lima put some tears in our eyes when she brought to her Instagram account the news of retiring from being a VS angel after almost 20 years of gracing the brand’s runway shows. The model first appeared in 1999 on the VS runway and since then never seized to impress the crowds with her charming looks, slender figure and fun spirit. She wore three of the famous fantasy bras during her years with the brand and for a final stroll down the runway she was given her largest wings ever.
