HAPPINESS ISN’T ONLY IN RELATIONSHIPS

T

There have been days where I’ve been sitting, listening to my friends, mainly girls; as they spill out words and emotions that show how unhappy they are. I’ve noticed that there has always been something in common between different stories of different people. It was either a relationship that makes them unhappy but they chose not to walk away, in fear of not finding another; or unhappy as they feel age is taking its toll on them and scared they won’t find someone to settle with. I began to wonder then, why is our happiness always linked to someone else’s existence? Why is it always correlated with relationship status and that for you to be happy, you have to be with someone? I realized then, that most of us, women, in Middle-Eastern societies; were raised up on an illusion that a woman’s success is measured on how soon she gets married, how soon she has kids and how long she can keep her marriage going, even if she’s unhappy. So women success is based on marriage potential and capabilities to be exact! Consequently, and sadly enough we have dropped many things out of our list, and we no longer regard our career progress, achievements or self-growth as an accomplishment we should already be happy and proud of. And we go on vicious circle from one relationship to another seeking happiness, forgetting that happiness doesn’t have to be only with someone else, happiness could be you. We disregard that our happiness is our responsibility alone. I’m not a commitment phobic, nor against it in any way. I don’t think relationships are constraining, nor that marriage is a messed up institution. But I’m against despair of all kinds; being desperate to find love, being desperately in need for someone to complete you, and being desperately scared of ending up alone. Don’t search for love; let it come your way. Love doesn’t come planned, your happiness isn’t in anyone’s hand, don’t fear your own company, and don’t fear being alone for a while, make the most out of it and find happiness in you.

Sponsoring Cairo Fashion Festival’s Seventh Season, for the Second Time, Huawei integrates Fashion and Technology into their P9 Smartphone in Red and Blue

F

or the second time this year, Huawei Consumer Business Group is the title sponsor of the seventh season of Cairo Fashion Festival. The festival hosted many Egyptian designers as well as credible and highly recognized regional designers to display the newest trending clothing items and accessories. Launching two of the season’s hottest colors, the entire event was themed in Huawei’s new P9 red and blue colors. Huawei’s award-winning flagship smartphone, the Huawei P9, was launched in two limited edition colors: Red and Blue. Inspired by the dramatic and colorful world of the Pop Art movement, these vibrant color ways also reflect the passion and glamour of the fashion world. The stunning result is a beautifullydesigned phone, packed with impressive features, that is a rallying cry for artists and innovators, and is set to be a staple in your favorite fashion ensembles. Leading the crowd in terms of style and fashion, the P9 boasts a harmony of design and technology, allowing industry leaders in the worlds of fashion, style and art to be 2017 trendsetters. Beautiful star Amina Khalil attended the fashion festival as a Huawei guest of honor, dazzling in a blue outfit inspired by the color of the limited edition P9. “I’ve always had a love for fashion and timeless

elegance. It is exciting to see technology companies paying attention to the fashion and design elements of their devices, especially Huawei who is the pioneer in this field globally. I have been following up on news of their many fashion wearables and smart-phones lately and I can see how Huawei is innovative in this fashiontechnology fusion,” said Amina Khalil. George Li, the director of the Egypt office for Huawei Consumer business group, stated: “Huawei values fashion the same way it does innovation and puts in a lot of effort in producing cutting edge, quirky and wearable pieces of technology that can be accessorized as part of any chic outfit. Fashion is a very big part of how we run our business and we firmly believe that technology inspires fashion and vice versa.”

FASHION NEWS Amr Saad’s newest eyewear collection Anakronous gets treated with “Opulence” Egypt’s first eyewear artisan Amr Saad has set the collection name, Anakronous, comes from Saad’s desire to give people a glimpse into the future. The name comes from anachronism, which is something that is appropriate to a period other than one it exists in. Saad said he was trying to create something totally out of the box- a statement. For him, the Anakronous collection is a link between the future and the present. “I was trying to know the reasoning behind the shape of the glasses,” he said. “All of them have to do with the shape of the eye, but I wanted to let go of this (in the designs).” When he first created the pieces, he was shocked by the outrageous shapes, but soon got convinced by the designs because he’s always looking to break the norm, and he did.

Adidas Launches New Athletics Category - Built for Focus adidas, the world’s leading sportswear innovator, has announced the launch of a brand new category – adidas Athletics. Designed to deliver a fresh take on traditional pre and post-match outwear, the adidas Athletics collection is specifically engineered to remove distractions and maximise athletes’ focus in the make-or-break period before they compete. The adidas Z.N.E. Hoodie was designed with this need in mind, helping athletes stay mentally strong thanks to three key elements; reduced noise distraction, minimal visionary interference and protection from discomfort. It combines cutting-edge craftsmanship with luxe fabric and a striking aesthetic to make it a sportswear essential, whether for performance or leisure.

DHL Marks Substantial Participation in Cairo Fashion Festival 2016 as Official Logistics Partner Cairo Fashion Festival, held in collaboration with Cairo Festival City Mall, presented the capital’s largest fashion event of the season for the seventh time since it started in 2012. H

ard to believe it has been only 12 months since MINI Egypt’s flagship showroom and service center on Maadi Ring Road in New Cairo opened its doors. However, to mark the first anniversary of these one-of-a-kind facilities that consist of a showroom, service center and a spare parts section, the British luxury brand is pleased to offer loyal customers a 15% discount on all aftermarket replacement parts, collision body repair and auto painting services for all MINI cars in the Egyptian market. This discount offer is available now in all MINI’s service centers across the country and until the end of the current year.

Taken in this light, the third generation of the 3-Door Hatch is now 98 mm longer, 44 mm wider and 7 mm taller than the outgoing model. Also, there is the new, super-sized 5-Door Hatch which is as much fun to drive as the smaller 3-Door Hatch sibling. Another new and fun-to-drive iteration of MINI’s lineup models is the all-new MINI CONVERTIBLE, with a new fully automatic soft top that folds flat in 18 seconds, an upright windscreen, LED headlamps with LED daytime driving light and an assortment of advanced systems. As for the biggest and most practical MINI model, the all-new MINI CLUBMAN, one can say that it is 270 mm longer and 90 mm wider than the already-big, MINI five-door hatchback sibling. Blending personality with craftsmanship, the unique iteration in MINI’s lineup models is leveraging from an unprecedented level of precision that lends an air of sophistication. Steering toward the bulked-up crossover: the COUNTRYMAN, one can say that this compact crossover SUV has proven to be a major success to the BMW-owned marque. As for those who appreciate exclusive and more performance-oriented versions, MINI Egypt offers a hot variant, the new and exclusive limited COOPER S COUNTRYMAN version.

Natural remedies for chapped

lips in winter

1.Sugar and Olive Oil Lip Scrub

2.Milk Cream:

Take a small amount of sugar and mix it with a few drops of olive oil. Leave the mixture for 5 minutes so the sugar becomes softer and easier to apply. Rub the mixture gently all over the lips then wash off with lukewarm water. This scrub exfoliates dead cells and keeps your lips soft.

Get some fresh milk cream and apply it on your lips. Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes. Wash your lips with a cotton ball dipped in lukewarm water. Do this daily to help heal chapped lips faster.

3.Aloe Vera

4.Rose Petals

Take a fresh aloe leaf and get the gel out of it. Spread a small amount of the gel on your lips; leave it for 15 to 20 minutes until it dries then wash it off. Repeat this process daily to heal dry lips as well as keep it moisturized all through winter.

Wash the rose petals thoroughly with water then soak them in glycerin. Mash them into a thick paste and apply all over your lips. Keep for 15 to 20 minutes then wash off with lukewarm water. Repeating this every night helps enhancing lips’ natural color and glow.

MICROBLADING

THE RESCUE TO YOUR EYEBROWS BY: MONY HELAL

E

yebrows complement and flatter your face features. You’ve probably heard of million ways and different cosmetics to enhance the shape of your eyebrows; ranging from eyebrow pencil, eyebrow powders, gels, tattoos etc. Some people may find a tattoo a bit unnatural-looking, and others may get bored of having to reshape their eyebrows on daily basis. Well. Microblading puts an end to your eyebrows dilemma Are there any pre-existing conditions that interfere with consideration for a Microblading treatment?

But what is Microblading? Phibrows Microblading is a manual "hand" method of permanent cosmetics for your eyebrows which creates extremely fine natural looking hair strokes. We don’t create new and totally different eyebrows; we just enhance their beautiful natural look. All you need is just two hours! The process isn’t painful; however local anesthesia is applied to ease any sort of discomfort, if any. 42 | DECEMBER 2016

• Pregnancy • Breastfeeding (treatment is possible, though anesthetic will not be possible) • On keloids or if you have tendency to keloid, birthmarks or moles. • Diabetic. • Serious diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, autoimmune disorders (doctor's note is required) • Circulatory disorders (doctor's note is required) • Any bleeding disorders (doctor's note is required) • You're taking blood thinning medication • Currently on Accutane or other strong retinoids (must wait until 6

months after treatment ends) • If any skin diseases symptoms or irritation appears on the area. • You've recently had Botox or Disport treatment (must wait 2 months) • Old PMU • You have a broken capillary in the eyebrows area • If you have a sunburn. • After waxing (must wait 3 days). • After chemical peels (must wait two weeks).

Is there any after-procedure care? Yes! Make sure to avoid ALL of the following: • Increased sweating, practicing sports, swimming, hot sauna, hot bath or jacuzzi, sun tanning or salon tanning. • Any laser or chemical treatments or peelings, and/or any creams containing Retin-A or Glycol Acid on the face or neck. • Picking, peeling or scratching of the micro pigmented area in order to avoid scarring of the area or removal of the pigment. • Performing tasks related to heavy household cleaning such as garage or basement cleaning where there is a lot of airborne debris. • Drinking alcohol in excess as it may lead to slow healing of wounds. • Driving in open air vehicles such as convertibles, boats, bicycles or motorcycles.

• Touching of the eyebrow area except for when rinsing and applying the post-care cream with a cotton swab. • Before showering apply a layer of post-care cream to protect your eyebrows from moisture. During the shower keep your face away from the shower head.. • Once completely healed, always apply a layer of sunscreen SPF 30 on your eyebrows when exposed to the sun so the pigments won’t fade away too quickly.

Is a touch up needed? A touch up is recommended 4-6 weeks after your initial treatment. During your touch up, you’ll have the missing hairs filled, add or make hairs longer or just achieve a darker color

What's the Microblading healing process like? True reflection of healed color can only be assessed 3-4 weeks after treatment. Immediately after the procedure, the pigment will appear very sharp and dark. This is because the pigment is still seating on top of your skin and has not yet settled in completely and do not be alarmed if you see some pigment on the cotton swab as this is excess pigment and/or body fluid that is naturally exiting your skin. As healing starts taking place, it will look like dandruff flakes or

dry skin. This might give you the impression that the color pigment is fading too quickly. However, this is just superficial color and dry skin being naturally removed from your eyebrows. Your eyebrows will be the lightest tones during days 5-12 because the color is absorbed in the deeper layers of the skin. Later skin cells push it back to the upper layers.

What about the results? Once the healing is completed you will enjoy perfectly naturallooking and beautiful eyebrows with the color that best matches your skin tone. Your eyebrows will look thicker and fuller without being too harsh or too dramatic.

aven’t you already decided on where to put your tree? It is that time of year we all so dearly love. The carols, lights, scents and taste of Christmas turning your home into a festive gathering place for family and friends. We’ll reveal unexpected and sophisticated display to capture some Christmas magic. If red and green aren’t part of your decorating color scheme, lean on tones that complement your existing décor.

OUTDOOR

We don’t all live in houses with a porch and big front yard but that shouldn’t stop you. Using wreaths and Lanterns will make neighbors curious to peek inside. Wreaths can be either real or artificial and can be made of absolutely anything, like fresh pinecones if greenery is not what you’re going for. Use lanterns with candles in them or sparking lights, add some berries and ribbons to complete your outdoor look. These can also be used to decorate balconies besides the traditional Christmas lights. 48 | DECEMBER 2016

LIVING ROOM This is your master piece, work of art, where most Christmas decorations are made especially if you live in a flat. When talking about living rooms we’re definitely referring to the mighty Christmas tree accompanied by the matching fireplace decorations with garlands, lights and ornaments; that is if you’re going traditional. If you’re looking for an innovative look you can use a bare tree and either decorate it or around it with snow.

DINNING

BATHROOM

Christmas dinner tables are one of the essential decorating concerns. Bring out the fancy china plates, atop with a napkin triangle shaped or rolled up with a customized ring and use those crystal wine glasses. 8 BEST DESTINATIONS TO ENJOY BY: GEORGE FARID It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go. If you are looking for holiday destinations and haven’t decided yet, here’s a list of spots around the world where you could truly get immersed in the jolly atmosphere.

Christmas

MALTA

Yes, this country offers a real nativity show. The entire villagers are actors performing this one of a kind show. They take you back in time as far as 2,000 years by their decorations, oil lamps and customs. The show takes place in their fields. Later, caroling can be witnessed singing at the Cathedral and an annual Christmas pantomime could be enjoyed at the Manoel Theater.

NEW YORK, USA

One of the many reasons we enjoy Kevin’s adventures in Home Alone was the fact that NY looks like a great Christmas tour. You can skate on ice at the Central Park, enjoy the vendors’ market, and take a stroll among gift shops and decorated shop displays.

HONOLULU, HAWAII Hawai is also a fabulous Christmas destination. We just have to imagine the islands more peaceful than its summer hype and the locals know how to celebrate the occasion. You’ll find parades on the streets, lights everywhere and a famous Shaka Santa, a 6-meter Santa in shorts.

SALZBURG, AUSTRIA

That’s where “The Sound of Music” was filmed. You’ll enjoy the chocolates, the music, traditional markets and architecture. Salzburg is a lovely destination most of the year, but at Christmas it’s about time to really pay a visit. 54 | DECEMBER 2016

SANTA CLAUS VILLAGE, FINLAND

A Christmas set up for all visitors. A whole amusement Santa park.

NUREMBERG, GERMANY

The Nuremberger Christkindlesmarkt pulls more than 2 million visitors each year. Old fashioned Christmas traditions, carousels and wheels, everything is there on this market. The vendors run a competition for the Most Beautiful Stall Design Award, so you could imagine you’re walking between some real efforts there. Have a gingerbread treat and a mulled wine to complete a typical German winter tradition.

VATICAN, ITALY

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, that’s what you will find around in Vatican corners. Vendors do sell them roasted. Goes without saying, ongoing nativity scenes take place at St Peter’s square, Piazza Navona. By midnight, it’s mass time at St Peter’s Basilica.

DUBLIN, SOUTH IRELAND

Irish, they start the day with a morning swim. Plenty of seasons’ cheers, gatherings at St Patrick’s, 12 days of Christmas market and hefty winter meals for warm up.

WAYS TO BEAT FATIGUE AND BE ENERGETIC

Good sleeping habits have very important health benefits. Napping restores wakefulness and promotes performance and learning.

Regulate your caffeine intake after noon. Typically, consuming a moderate amount of caffeine-200 to 300 mg, the amount found in two to three cups of coffee — can make you more energetic and alert in the hours following.

• Eat every three to four hours, having three small meals and two snacks throughout the day can keep your blood sugar and energy levels stable all day long. • Drink plenty of water. Dehydration is one of the main causes of fatigue, as well as decreasing concentration and alertness. • Get moving! You can go either go for moderate intensity and cardio activities like cycling and brisk walking; or higherintensity and vigorous activities including swimming and running.

Although almost any exercise is good, Yoga can be especially effective for boosting energy, clear-mindedness and confidence.

Crash dieting, is it the ultimate? BY: RANA ABDELNABY

58 | DECEMBER 2016

Why is it that most of us face the same nutrition related struggles? Are there any effective ways to lose weight? Or do we always have to struggle with food? Some common questions to be heard at work places, gym lockers or just about everywhere.

“ Whenever my

stomach smells food, my waist line gets wider

Reality is; most of us spend our lives eating the wrong way. We eat to attain a sense of pleasure or to reward ourselves. On other occasions, we eat out of frustration, boredom or anxiety. Instead of relying on food to fuel our bodies, we unconsciously resort to it to fix our day-to-day problems and fight our negative emotions. To most of us, foods that provide instant pleasure are ones that are high in fat and/or sugar. The constant look out for food as a way to deal with day-to-day struggles, leads to an unhealthy relationship with food. Meanwhile, ingesting the wrong foods, at the wrong timings and in random quantities, results in a messed up body image. It also slows down metabolism, which decreases the body’s ability to shed fat. Inspired to change our bodies, we start reconsidering our diets. But, are we patient enough to look for long-term solutions and wait for results? Let’s agree that most of us aren’t. From here, we start looking for quick fixes, commonly known as crash diets.

means. A crash diet is characterized by being very restrictive, in terms of quantity and variety of foods. For instance, a diet that allows you only soups or one that completely eliminates carbs. Generally, crash diets involve an extreme cut down in calorie intake, since it’s designed to make you lose weight fast, well, super fast. We’re talking about 4-5 kilos during the first week.

which is within your body. It does that by burning off stored fat. But wait, how do you feel while on that diet? Unfortunately, you feel very low on energy, irritable and may develop some headaches, and oh, your cravings are up in the sky. The negative side effects of this type of diet represent the language used by your body to let you know that something is wrong with your dietary intake.

I’m moody, irritable, and constantly thinking of all the foods I can’t have

To all the crash dieters out there Truth is; you don’t have to starve yourself to death in order to reach your goal weight in a given period. You can cut down on all processed foods, while adding an hour of high intensity cardio to your day. If you’re not able to do cardio sessions, you can add an hour of brisk walking to your day. Bottom line is; eating clean and in calculated portions, together with a good workout program can help you reach your goal fast, and most importantly, without compromising your overall health. And if your deadline is very soon, you can always increase the frequency and intensity of your workouts, while restricting all the wrong foods.

“ When I’m on a diet,

Some of you know what a crash diet looks like, what it feels to be on such a diet and what to expect in terms of results. Others had only heard the term, but are not sure what it

WHAT EXACTLY IS A CRASH DIET?

DO CRASH DIETS WORK? Well, that depends. If making it to a certain number on the scale in a given period of time is what you’re after, then the answer would be a definite Yes. But, if losing weight and keeping it off is what you’re after, then it’s a big No. This is because crash diets are never sustainable. As soon as you get back to your previous eating patterns, which are often worse as a result of the extremely strict diet phase, you start gaining all the weight back, and even more.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A CRASH DIET? Your body goes into ketosis, which is the scientific term for starvation. Your body isn’t getting enough nutrients from food so it starts looking for energy elsewhere,

Say Goodbye to

Frustration BY:YASMINE SHAHINE

DO YOU WAKE UP EVERY MORNING HAVING A FEELING THAT THERE IS A BURDEN ON YOUR CHEST THAT MAKES YOU FEEL YOU CAN HARDLY BREATHE?? Unfortunately nowadays this is the case for lots of Egyptians! From the moment we open our eyes in the morning, we start hammering our brains with all sorts of burdens and commitments in the most frustrating and negative ways.. How much is the dollar rate today? How will we cope with inflation? How’s the stock market today? What about investing in Bonds? Have you seen how crowded all streets have become?....etc the list is really endless.. I am not saying that we should ignore our commitments or that we should not plan for our future. But starting every day with this endless list, especially by asking yourself these questions in the wrong way is the real mistake here. You are bottling yourself with huge amounts of frustrations that will not only suck all your energy but will also distract you and steal quite a bit of time. Now all you 66 | DECEMBER 2016

know is that you seem to be stuck and no matter how hard you try, you don’t seem to get anywhere. You’re just spinning your wheels in the mud and all you feel is pure frustration. Sounds familiar? Your frustrations are significant because they indicate that you have been holding yourself back by self-imposed limitations and habits. You are the reason why you’re feeling frustrated, and only you can break free from this cycle. Ongoing frustrations can also trigger the emotions of overwhelm, stress, and depression. Frustration creates impatience and causes you to become more aggressive and angry the longer you struggle with this emotion. Do you really want to live like that?? If only you learned how to manage your frustrations in more productive ways, it could literally open a whole new world of possibilities.

Let me give you some tips on how to say good-bye to frustrations and to start looking at matters in a more positive and productive way … 1. Stay away from negative people as much as you can! I know it’s hard these days because you will find yourself surrounded by lots

of them. However, you need to find a way to protect yourself from this negativity in the air around you. 2. Invite your frustrations out for dinner! Dig in. Don’t bury it. What you don’t want points to what you want. Grab a piece of a paper and a pen and write down all that’s putting you down but without exaggeration. 3. Don’t focus on past behaviors, results, or patterns. The past is a platform not a destination. It’s all about the NOW, not yesterday and not even tomorrow! 4. Stop playing the victim because you are NOT. Blaming others or certain circumstances for your frustration an excuse driven out of fear as it may seem easier to stay the same. Your frustrations are yours. In your brain you are the one who has decided to see matters as problems and not as challenges. That is why only you can change that perspective. 5. The forward facing question that transforms frustration into positive direction is what do I want? It takes courage to say what you want, when you’re mad, but it just needs you to believe in yourself that you can. 6. Appreciate what you have. After you have pulled your attention back to where it can be most helpful, focus it on what is still positive in your life.

The easiest way to do so is to focus it on appreciating what you do have, and you can start by the very simple things that you take for granted like: • A warm home and a roof over your head. • Plenty of drinkable water. • Not having to go hungry. • Access to the Internet. • Your friends and family. Things are usually not as bad as they first appear. Sometimes things seem much worse; simply because we’re tired or mentally drained. Taking a break and remembering to keep your sense of humor can help. This time of frustration will pass. A positive mind is far more open to solutions and answers than a negative one that thinks it’s just “Hopeless” and thinks, “What’s the use?” A closed mind will not be able to see the possible solutions when they do come along.

STAY POSITIVE

Relationships

IS THE BACKDOOR AFFAIR AN

EVERLASTING EXCUSE? BY: SARAH KHALED

DO YOU FEEL THAT YOU ARE SOMETIMES SPEAKING TO A STATUE AND NOTHING SEEMS TO BE GETTING THROUGH? THIS VOID OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN ANY COUPLE OPENS THE DOOR FOR A LACK OF TRUST, EMOTIONAL NEGLECT, CONFUSION, AND AN OVERALL UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIP. SO WHAT IS THE REAL PROBLEM? Having this illusion that it’s never going to work out the way you want is the major kick start. Some people deny having a Plan B, whereas others admit the importance of having a backdoor to sustain their relationships. Doubts and insecurities about the future with your partner usually emerge with any dispute. It always makes you wonder: What will I do if my relationship doesn’t work out? This question sometimes generates a need for Plan B or for an exit partner to take you through your down times. 72 | DECEMBER 2016

Treating your senses to a nice recipe of emotions with a person who will neither judge you nor hold you responsible for anything sometimes looks very tempting. No strings attached! It starts by feeling trapped; when cheating on an unfaithful spouse becomes a big relief. It happens when a wrong choice has been made based on a certain need, be it financial, psychological, emotional or physical. Once you stumble into reality, you start realizing that this is not what you want, and that’s when you start looking for the backdoor. “My past relationship didn’t work out because he was a cheater and I just couldn’t get over it except through the backdoor until I completely detached and broke up with him”, Anonymous, F, 34. “My only way out whenever we fight is my escape plan, disappearing for a day or two, getting intimate with my backdoor partner, till my wife realizes that she pushed me away. She calls me, I return back home. This is my life for the past 10 years!” Anonymous, M, 40.

HOW CAN YOU DETECT THAT YOUR PARTNER HAS A BACKDOOR?

CLOSING THE BACKDOOR TOGETHER…

1. Indifference after a fight is the first indicator especially when your partner used to care a lot about how you used to feel but he or she doesn’t anymore. 2. The backdoor creates separation; you won’t feel as close, and a high sense of awkwardness will be in the air. You will feel it for sure. 3. Picking up fights will be more frequent than ever; because this is their only excuse to elope. 4. Intimacy crashes and declines significantly. The backdoor for many women might come from emotional neglect. For many men, it might originate from sexual neglect. It can be vice versa but one way or another a need or a desire is likely not being fulfilled by their partner. With that void not being addressed they become vulnerable and it becomes very easy for someone else to come along in an attempt to “step in”. This is not validation or an excuse, but this is an explanation. We can all say “if you aren’t happy then just leave” and I completely agree.

1. Identify where the backdoor really is. 2. Determine what triggers your Plan B every time with your partner and speak openly. 3. Share your desires and preferences without feeling conservative or embarrassed. 4. Agree with your partner on how to prevent the reoccurrence of this incident in the future. 5. If it happened again, then accept the fact that this relationship needs to end. The Backdoor Theory is a constant invisible armor that is always felt. It’s exhausting for the partner with the backdoor and the person they’re in relationship with. I do not believe everyone that cheats just has some undeniable thirst for stepping out on their partner; it’s our delusional shield to survive against all odds especially when we feel insecure about our relationships. If you smell it, don’t ignore the scent, there is a fine line between pleasure and pain. Every relationship deserves a second chance, starting all over again might not be that bad. When you restart, you actually get another chance to make things right! DECEMBER 2016 | 73

GET INSPIRED

AMANY HELMY KHALIL

THE PRIDE OF EGYPTIAN WOMEN Against all difficulties or restrains, the 50-year-old athlete Amany Helmy Khalil sets an empowering and inspiring role model for all women to believe in themselves. Could you tell us when did you start your journey in sports? I studied Business Administration at The American University in Cairo and upon my graduation my mother encouraged me to join the banking field. Three years later I got married, and resigned as my husband was moving to The United States. As soon as I learned I was pregnant, my life took a different course of action, and everything changed. But that’s the thing; Change, you never expect when it comes your way, but you have to embrace it, because it’s always for the best Many people fear change, so how did you get it to work in your favor? I decided to do something on the side while I take care of the kids. I built the habit of starting my mornings by running. I never realized I was totally hooked to running till one day I met someone while running and she advised me to register for the 5 km race and from there I did my first full Marathon right before I left The United States. From the running routine to the aerobics, every day I explored a strong passion for sports I didn’t know I had. My mother-in-law noticed my progress and encouraged me to teach aerobics and that’s when 78 | DECEMBER 2016

she decided to become a certified aerobics instructor. With your ever growing love for sports that you’ve developed in the United States, how did you make use of that as you’ve moved to Egypt? As I settled in Egypt, I was lucky to get the opportunity of teaching aerobics in the same nursery where my kids were and that was my stepping stone. I started to teach in Samia Allouba’s fitness center and later at El Gezirah club where I built my own community and it was suggested that I register for Luxor Marathon. I finished in third and was the only Egyptian, that’s how I was noticed by Maadi Runners. From this day, I joined Maadi Runners for a Marathon abroad every year. And when did you get in the world of Iron Man?

By 2014, and as I have already finished 14 marathons, I decided to enter the world of Triathlons. Every time I made an achievement I decided to reach for higher goal. My half Iron man was in Barcelona, unfortunately I got disqualified for being 1 minute late for a cut off time I wasn’t aware off. I was frustrated, but I promised myself I’ll make it up the following year and again, it will be Barcelona. I was lucky enough to reach Khadiga Amin, the first Egyptian Lady to win Iron Man. She believed in me, she trained me with all dedication, day by day, and it was through her that I got to finish Full Iron Man in an impressive time record. I felt strong, motivated and I learned that even age wouldn’t stand in the way of your dreams no matter how hard. Do you find it hard to balance the time between your family and your training? On the contrary, and unlike banking, now my time is more flexible. I take care of the entire household and the family, and I do it on my own. It is all because of sports, sports is my medicine, it keeps me going. I must admit that I also owe it to my family and the support they give me. I’m lucky to have a Husband and children who have always believe in me and encourage me to accomplish more, and have always been pushing me to go beyond my limits. And what’s your next goal? Boston Marathon. It has been my dream for so long, and I’m giving it all my best to make it a reality.
