editor’s letter Stories

Everyone I know who belongs to the 80’s and 90’s would definitely know what it is to watch “One Thousand and One Nights” in Ramadan. It was magical and glamorous, entertaining and always sending positive messages. It is really something that I would use to mark our generation. Like all kids, I enjoyed watching them and imitating the characters later! And since then, stories have certain spell on me. I love listening to people’s stories, read books, watch TV series, anything that tell me something or have the thrill of looking forward to knowing what’s going to happen next. I expect, put assumptions, make guesses, and then wait eagerly for the end! I even sometimes do myself a mini party with munchies and chocolates to celebrate the end of a series or a book! I learned by time that every story is different. Some stories might share the same setting but the reason it happens is always different, bad or good, the reason of “why” it happened will remain a mystery that is useless to waste time figuring it out. So all you have to do is deal with what you have… Stories automatically make experience a given fact of life. You live, pass throught and listen to many stories throughout your life, you sometimes pass through the same story with different people on different times, through yourself or through others around you, which makes you know the end of the story earlier than before. Giving you a chance to be a helping advisor of great credibility. Generally, stories are cheerful with happy endings. With guarantee that good will defeat the evil. With sometimes imaginary creatures or cartoon characters. Which all grow the sense of “I CAN” in children, that anything is possible, that the more you believe in something, the more you will achieve it. Cartoon stories hold this promise. Watch, listen, and learn from cartoon stories! I do once a week! Last but not least, stories grow the talent of “Listening.” The key factor to enjoying storytelling is listening. Listen with all your senses and enjoy it. Enjoy being blessed with people’s trust and having their confidence in your “listening.” Make your listening a gift to somebody this Ramadan, some people need nothing more than to be heard and listened to. Give a piece of yourself to others through your listening…

As I’ve gotten more secure, it hasn’t seemed as necessary…I’ve really tried to use success to grow. I think you can use success in two ways. Home A lot of women spend huge amount of time in the kitchen, and sometimes the kitchen is not only a place for cooking, but also a central part of the house where the family gets together at meal times. That’s why every woman has to make sure that her kitchen has all the basic items she needs, is clean, practical, and aesthetic, especially during this festive food season!

Kitchen Storage Tips Organize Your Pantry The pantry should be organized in such a way so that finding things is easy when you require them and also to become immediately aware when you run low on any food item. One of the best ways to organize your pantry is dividing the space according to each type of food such as snacks, condiments, legumes, dried foods, sweeteners, grains, pasta, canned fruits and vegetables.

Organize Your Storage Cabinets

Remember that there really are no rules; just organize your kitchen according to your sense of style and convenience.

Items that are used regularly can be kept in overhead cabinets located above the kitchen counter or island. This is where utensils, dishes, or pots that you want close at hand should be kept. Larger and heavier items should be kept in lower cabinets. Freestanding cabinets are great if you need additional storage space. >> 35

Organize Your Cooking Utensils Cooking utensils come in attractive colors and designs; hence, they need not be tucked away inside drawers. Besides being functional, you can use them to make a style statement or add to the interior design theme of your kitchen. You could place them right beside your stove in attractive storage bins or fix a wire mesh wall in your kitchen and hang them on it so that they are on display.

Organize Your Tableware Keep the dishes you use daily in kitchen storage cabinets. Like items should be stored with like items. For example, all the glasses should be kept in one cupboard, while all your cups should be kept on a different shelf. You should use a wide drawer to store your silverware, which you should be able to reach easily from your stove or counter.

“If you can organize your kitchen, you can organize your life.” Louis Parrish

Organize Your Appliances Keep the kitchen appliances that you use only occasionally in those hard-to-reach places, which helps you to get them out of the way, thus reducing the clutter in your kitchen, plus making good use of those spaces. A good tip about appliances is not to go overboard about buying too many of them in the first place. 36

What to look for: A bigger pan (preferably one 18 by 13 inches and at least 1 inch deep) is the most versatile size. Building Positive Attitudes: The 4-Day Attitude Diet To Become Invincible

H

old up your thumb and forefinger about 2-1/2 inches apart. It takes about 1/100th of a second for Olympians to run that distance in the 100-meter race. But that’s the difference between winning and losing. In the women's 100-meter dash at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, for example, the gold medal was won by an American who crossed the line only 2-1/2 inches in front of her closest opponent. Fifth place went to a Jamaican who finished a mere 6/100th of a second behind her. And yet that little bit of difference made all the difference in the world. 54

The same goes for attitude. When you compare age, gender, upbringing, education, IQ , and just about any other factor you can think of, research says that positive attitude is the little bit of difference that makes all the difference in success in both your personal and professional lives. In fact, the research makes it clear that attitude is more important than any other element when it comes to ensuring success.

So how do you build a positive attitude that ensures your success?

DAY 1 FILL YOUR MIND WITH POSITIVES Instead of living your life on autopilot, letting any, and all thoughts come into your mind, consciously feed your mind with positive input. Do this on the first day of every week, and do it throughout the day. Read inspirational books, listen to uplifting music, or call an upbeat person. And by all means, avoid the cynics and gripers. Keep a journal and write down wonderful things that happen to you on day 1. Include even small things; like stranger greeting you with a cheerful “good morning.” After awhile, you'll realize that most of the things that happen in your life are positive.

DAY 2 AFFIRM YOURSELF To build a positive attitude, you must remind yourself of past victories. Congratulate yourself on the good you have done and will do. And refuse to let any self-doubt enter your mind. Just tell yourself over and over, “I am filled with confidence, and I am competent.” And when you make a mistake, learn the lesson in that mistake and laugh at yourself. In fact, people who can't laugh at themselves are not only more negative, but they're also more susceptible to cancer, stroke, and heart disease. So laugh and affirm the fact you're learning and growing. Of course, you may have some doubts about yourself. But on day 2, literally, consciously feed yourself with positive affirmations. As boxing champ Sugar Ray Robinson said, “To be a champ, you have to believe in yourself when nobody else will.” And Dolly Parton added, “I'm not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know that I'm not dumb and I also know that I'm not blonde.”

DAY 3 THINK ONLY GOOD THINGS ABOUT PEOPLE Don't allow ill thoughts to enter your mind. Look for something you like in everyone you meet. One person might have a great smile, and another one might be extremely dedicated to his work. You can always find something you like. Of course, you may think this is not easy, especially if you're working with some very difficult people. No problem. Simply see these people as giving you an opportunity to learn patience and practice assertiveness. That's something you can like.

DAY 4 SPEAK ONLY POSITIVE WORDS In order to build and maintain a positive attitude, you must speak hopeful about everything -- your job, your customers, your manager, your employees, your children, your health, your coach and your future. Go out of your way to talk optimistically about everything. You may have to talk yourself out of uttering negative words. If, for instance, the man at the front of the company cafeteria line seems to be holding up everyone else, you'll be tempted to make a snide remark to the person next to you. Don't do it. Instead, say, “It's kind of nice not to rush every single minute of the day.” When you have a positive attitude, you refuse to use a loser's language. If you talk like a loser, you'll end up losing. As George Schultz, the former U.S. Secretary of State said, “The minute you start talking about what you're going to do if you lose, you have lost.”

And, Now The Challenge: Start Building a Positive Attitude Today. Your body will follows you! Ramadan Karim! 55

DITCH THE WORKOUT; JOIN THE PARTY WITH

Zumba!

Zumba is a popular dance that’s becoming more and more popular all over the world. It’s taught in gyms and studios in Africa, America, Europe and Asia to millions of Zumba enthusiasts. There are an estimated 4 million Zumba enthusiasts and 25,000 instructors in 40 countries. But until several years ago, maybe many of us hadn’t heard of the word “Zumba”, and today, still many of us hear the word but don’t know what it is exactly and what the story behind it is. Part dance, part aerobics, Zumba is an hour-long routine that works almost every muscle in the body. But that’s not all. Before explaining Zumba in more detail, we’d like you to know its story. Zumba was born from an accident. Colombia-born Alberto Beto Perez was teaching an aerobics class in his native Cali in 1986 and discovered he had forgotten his usual music. He improvised using his own mix of music from tapes he had in his backpack (salsa and merengue music he grew up with). Spontaneously he created a new kind of dance-fitness, one that focused on letting the music move you (instead of counting reps over the music). Energy electrified the room; people couldn't stop smiling. His class loved it! And on that day, a revolutionary new fitness concept was born: the Zumba Fitness-Party. Perez decided to call the exercise Zumba, after the Colombian slang word meaning to buzz like a bee or move fast. Zumba's success grew steadily after Perez moved first to Bogota, Colombia and later to Miami. In 1999, entrepreneurs Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion approached Perez about taking Zumba to the mass market. The three began selling DVDs via infomercial in 2002 and were very successful, but enthusiasts demanded more. In 2005, Perez, Perlman, and Aghion developed an educational division, wrote a training manual, and began offering Zumba workshops to those interested in teaching. The brand also offers music and choreography, and a clothing line. Zumba sessions are typically about an hour long and are taught by licensed instructors. The exercises include music with fast and slow rhythms, as well as resistance training. The music comes from the following dance styles: cumbia, salsa, merengue, mambo, flamenco, chachacha, reggaeton, soca, samba, belly dancing, bhangra, hip hop music, axé music and 56

Zumba provides a workout for the whole body. From head and shoulder rolls that loosen up the neck and warm up the upper body, to footwork that strengthens and stretches calves and ankles, this fitness method touches on nearly every muscle and joint. Hips and abs receive particular attention in the Latin dance style. Flexibility is not ignored in a Zumba class either, with warm-ups and cool-downs being a regular part of Zumba programming. According to Zumba instructor, Kass Martin, during a Zumba class, you engage a ton of muscles, often (blissfully) unaware that you're incorporating traditional fitness moves like squats and lunges into your choreography. It tightens and tones your body from head to toe.

STOP TheLove Chub!

5 WAYS TO PREVENT RELATIONSHIP WEIGHT GAIN

Falling in love can make you feel all soft and gooey inside. Unfortunately, it can have the same effect on your outside. Skip a workout here, order some greasy takeout there, and before you know it, you have more than just butterflies in your stomach; you’ve got a full-on jelly roll hanging over your waistband. “When we get comfortable in a relationship, we establish new habits together that aren’t always the best for our weight,” says Amy Gorin, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Connecticut. Here are five of the behaviors that can lead to a serious case of love chub. But don’t worry; we’ve also got you some easy fixes! You Eat Out...All the Time When you’re single, you tend to prepare healthy foods at home. But once you’re in a relationship, it’s decadent dinner dates followed by caloric brunches. Couples bond over food, and enjoying it becomes a special ritual in their relationship. A Men’s Health analysis of 24 national chains revealed that the average entree at a sit-down restaurant contains 867 calories. And that doesn’t include apps, sides, and dessert. The fix: Eat in. Cooking together can be intimate. Food 70

is very sensual, especially when you take turns tasting it. Plus, of course, you can control the fat and calories by using healthy recipes and ingredients that are low in fat. When you do dine out, eat a healthy snack that contains protein and fiber a few hours before your meal. Women often skimp all day when they’re going out at night, but that leaves them so hungry that they end up overdoing it. Nonfat yogurt and a piece of fruit or a small bowl of cereal with low fat milk are smart choices.

You’re Always in Bed

His Snacks Are Your Snacks

Or on the couch. Or anywhere but the gym. A study in the journal Obesity found that couples who are married for two or more years are less likely to be physically active, and the women are more likely to become obese. As positive as relationships can be, they also change your routine. You schedule more couple’s events and have less time to yourself. The fix: Get him involved. A study in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that women who exercised with a partner lost more weight than those who sweated solo. When people do something together, they’re more likely to stick with it. So sign up together for a 5-K, go for a bike ride instead of watching a movie, or join the same gym. When you don’t feel like going, he’ll drag you there, and you’ll do the same for him.bowl of cereal with low fat milk are smart choices.

You might not buy chips for yourself, but when he leaves the bag out on the coffee table, you need supreme willpower to ignore it. A study from Newcastle University’s Human Nutrition Research Centre found that women were more likely to adopt their partner’s eating habits than vice versa. It’s one way women connect with men! The fix: Know your options. You have two diet-friendly choices: Serve yourself a small amount of his snack and put it on a plate (dipping your hand into the bag over and over again leads to diet disaster), or have a portion-controlled, lower-calorie alternative on hand to munch while he takes down that bag of chips or pint of ice cream.

You Match Him Bite for Bite You’re Happy! Research shows that what’s good for your heart may be bad for your hips. A study published in the journal BioPsychoSocial Medicine found that happy people were less likely to succeed at losing weight than those with a “slightly negative and cautious outlook.” The fix: Weigh in often to prevent your eating habits from spiraling out of control. It’s great to accept your body and not obsess over every last calorie, but it’s hard to feel good about yourself when none of your pants fit. Studies have shown that once you pass the five-pound mark, weight gain can take off like a runaway train. Seeing the scale creep toward that mark can be a call to action. Still need convincing? Women in a Duke University study who lost as little as 10% of their body weight reported dramatic improvements in the bedroom. Research shows that people who are more active and happier with their bodies have more satisfying sex lives.

It’s tough to stick to petite portions when your dining companion downs 500 to 1,500 more calories a day than you do. Women develop portion distortion; you don’t recognize a normal-size serving anymore because you’re always eating with a guy who consumes huge platefuls of food. Your guy might be able to get away with it (guys have more muscle mass, so they require more calories), but shoveling in all those extra forkfuls will eventually catch up with you. The fix: Serve yourself less. Eat about three-quarters of what he’s eating. Sorry, but women burn 26% fewer calories than men do, so at that rate you’ll just about break even.it. Nonfat yogurt and a piece of fruit or a small bowl of cereal with low fat milk are smart choices.

Mother & Child

AWESOME TIPS FOR MUMS TO BE!

W

hether you’re a parent or not, do you have any tips for doing it all and keeping your sanity? Some women, when become pregnant, panic and don’t know what to do or where to start. Actually, there’s no need to worry or panic. With just some organization and planning, the pregnancy period, the pre-pregnancy and after birth periods, could pass smoothly. We’ll give you some quick advice to help you from the start when you’re trying to get pregnant, and up to the point when you’re getting ready as your due date approaches.

1

Stay true to yourself. You don’t have to give up your own passions and interests once you become a mum. It’s important that you find time for what YOU love to do. Reading, writing, exercising, make these a priority and find a way to incorporate them into your routine. Easier said than done, but you should at least aim to keep doing what you love, even if you don’t get to do it as often as before. If you take care of your own needs, you will be happier and will function better as a mum.

2

Don’t be a martyr. The kids didn’t ask for it, they don’t need it, and they certainly don’t need to pay the price that comes with being mothered by a martyr. Need some time alone? Let the kids watch TV for an hour and go read a book. Feel like you haven’t had adult interaction in ages? Leave them with dad for the evening and make plans to have dinner with a friend. Getting to the point where you are utterly exhausted is not good for you or for your kids.

3

Don’t try to be perfect. This is true for life in general, regardless of motherhood. Striving for perfection is always a bad idea, because life is messy and unpredictable and full of surprises. Trying to create 72

perfection, or to maintain complete control, is simply impossible and should never be your goal. Once you become a mum, life is messier and crazier than ever before, so it’s more important than ever to let go of that perfectionism. You newt once in a while dinner will be takeout, and that the kids will sometimes have to entertain themselves while you recharge and regroup.

4

Ditch the guilt. Guilt seems to be one of the most common side effects of motherhood. Guilt is unhelpful and a terrible waste of time and energy. Once you make a decision, whether a major one like staying at home vs. going back to work, or a small one like allowing the kids to play a computer game while you have some time for yourself, try to avoid second-guessing yourself. You are doing the best that you can. No one is perfect, and you are not expected to be a perfect mum or to never make mistakes. As long as you love them and provide their basic needs, your kids will turn out fine. Really.

5

Be Patient. Raising kids is hard work. Kids are noisy, messy and incredibly demanding. Yes, you will lose your patience once in a while. But for the most

6

part, try to take a deep breath and see them for the small, helpless people that they are.

Listen to your children. REALLY listen. We tend to assume that we know more than our kids do, which is true to some extent of course, so we don’t really bother to listen. In addition, we often act as problemsolvers, dishing immediate advice, when all they need is for us to listen to them.

7

Be their mom, not their friend. Set limits. In a way, it was easy for previous generations. Parents were parents. Kids were kids. Families were patriarchal. Everyone listened and obeyed to the father. Now, families are democratic. We negotiate, talk things over, and listen to each other. We make important decisions together. This is great, but kids still need us to be their parents and set clear limits. We should listen to them and respect them, but we are not their peers.

8

Teach them simplicity. You will do them a big, HUGE favor, if you teach them at a young age to avoid associating happiness with the accumulation of material possessions. The younger they are, the more likely they are to listen to you, so start early.

9

Don’t push them too hard. Everyone wants their kids to be successful, to reach their full potential and to be financially secure. In the process, don’t push them too hard; but rather let them maintain a relatively relaxed approach to success.

10

Teach them self-esteem. A person with a high self-esteem values will not get into, or stay in, an abusive relationship. A person with high self-esteem is more likely to be happy and to reach her full potential. How do you teach your kids self-esteem? By showing them that you value them, by spending time with them, and by talking with them and listening to them.

11

12

Laugh and have fun! When you’re a mum, it’s easy to become so absorbed in the logistics of taking care of your kids that you forget to relax and have fun. But kids are fun. They give you a wonderful opportunity to be a child all over again, and to do things that you never thought you would do as an adult (jumping in puddles is so much fun!) and see the world through their innocent, curious eyes. Haven’t noticed interesting insects and colorful butterflies in several years? You are going to start noticing them again once you have kids.

The Best Time To Get Pregnant: You're most likely to get pregnant if you have sex within a day or so of ovulation (releasing an egg from the ovary). This is usually about 14 days after the first day of your last period. Around ovulation, sex is best undertaken once every 48 hours, so as to maintain the high quality of the sperm. Tips for increasing woman’s fertility: •  Good nutrition is the foundation of fertility. Eat a variety of foods, including fish, nuts, seeds, fresh fruit and vegetables. •  Being excessively underweight or overweight significantly reduces your ability to conceive. The advice of fertility experts is to eat healthily and to exercise regularly, and to aim for a body mass index (BMI) - your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres - of between 20 and 25. For exercise, a combination of aerobics and resistance work, such as weight training, is recommended. •  Take a holiday; many women fall pregnant on holiday because this is when they relax. Stress is an enemy of fertility and anything that relieves it is encouraged. •  Smoking and too much coffee or alcohol impair a woman’s fertility. Quitting smoking is important. Also only one or two cups of coffee a day is acceptable.

Teach them to be self-reliant. It’s very tempting to help your children in a way that robs them of the opportunity to help themselves. At every developmental stage your child reaches, s/he can do things by herself/himself. If you do them for her/him, you are not really helping, but rather holding her/him back. Gently teach her/him independence and let her/him do what s/he can do, and what is appropriate for her/ him to do by herself/himself. The sense of accomplishment that comes with being independent is immensely important for a child.
