STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD The fashion scene has been tremendously changing over the past years, and with the social media impact and the easy access to digital platforms of bloggers and fashionistas from around the world, everyone keeps an eye on new trends to adopt. Amidst this trends frenzy, some stood out with a unique identity and style, while others just went after the flow blindly following every new trend there is. Fashion is way beyond some apparel and accessories styled up together to create an outfit. It is not just that animal print jacket or checked pants you view at every store display and can’t fight the urge to own. Fashion is a statement, it is a reflection of who you are and the image you want to project. Fashion is the ultimate expression of your aesthetic side, it is the very first thing people will notice about you, and yes it can tell a lot. While you scroll through pinterest or instagram feed flooded by outfits’ inspo here and there, one thing you should keep in mind; get inspired but don’t blindly copy. Follow trends, yes, and be edgy if you want; but always keep your identity. Look for trends that compliment your beauty in every aspect, or even create your own trend. Make a statement, stand out, but do it genuinely. And always know that those who choose to follow will soon fade out.

PROTECTED:

THAT AWKWARD TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN BY: MAYAR BADIE

That awkward time, the in-between days, the schizophrenic weather, when we’re not quite sure if it’s autumn yet but it’s definitely not summer anymore, can be very confusing. If you’re looking for comfortable but also stylish outfits to transition you into autumn/winter, here are some ideas for you! If you know me you’d know I’m the queen of versatility. This is entirely self-proclaimed but I think I redeem myself by styling my favorite items in my wardrobe through the seasons and the years. Here’s how you could do the same

1) A well-tailored long blazer is one of my favorite wardrobe staples. Belted or not, dressed up or down, over dresses or jeans- so many possibilities. Invest in one of the neutral prints a.k.a checkered and give your looks more life than with a flat solid colored one.

22 | NOVEMBER 2018

2) A long trench coat is the most timeless of coats- think Burberry. A statement one with unique embellishment, embroidery or unusual fit will sure take your summer uniform of the simple white shirt and jeans to a different level. If minimalism is your style then a plain one would do as good.

SOURCE GETTY - TIMUR EMEK 3) A chunky jumper to throw over your summer dresses, bright trousers or skirt is really the key look of the season. Long gone the days when mixing light summery fabrics with chunkier ones was a faux pas. Wool knitted jumper with slinky skirt, frilly dresses and flows trouser paired with trainers or a boot- such a fun combo! Don’t try to give the mono-chromatic look a go with single tone dressing!

3) Black tights are my hero autumn/winter items. An excuse to continue wearing your favorite miniskirts, dresses, and shorts whilst keeping the legs warm. Pair them with a jumper or a leather/denim jacket and you’re ready to transition.

SOURCE TIM REGAS

5) I’m going to skip the leather and denim jacket over anything because that’s quite obvious, but instead I’ll use my number 5 to tell you to swap your sandals and trainers with either a) white boots b)cowboy boots c) combat boots; on your floral dresses. Instant street style star look guaranteed.

MOSCHINO [tv] H&M New York Fashion Show: Celebrity Front-Row, Supermodels, and Surprises Paris Jackson, Frances Bean Cobain and Miles Richie were among the guests last night at the high-energy MOSCHINO [tv] H&M show and after-party. H&M and MOSCHINO’s Creative Director Jeremy Scott invited an audience of celebrities, international editors and influencers to a billboard-filled catwalk lit up like Times Square in New York. The casting featured the Hadid siblings on the runway, wearing pieces from the MOSCHINO [tv] H&M collaboration and legendary model Naomi Campbell closed the show. The front row included Kiersey Clemons, Leigh Lezark, Coco Rocha and Bebe Rexha, all dressed in looks from the collection. The models entered the catwalk by a street-scene staircase reminiscent of an old New York musical. They then walked round the catwalk much looking like a street, the very place where Jeremy loves to see people wearing his designs. 24 | NOVEMBER 2018

NATURAL REMEDIES TO GROW THICKER EYEBROWS We all know how much time, energy, and products it can take to have the perfectly arched eyebrows. But it is indeed worth every little thing for the great result. Have them rightly shaped and your whole face can look years younger. The best thing is to rock them naturally. It is long gone, the age of overly tweezing them. Just clean a bit around them, brush and voila. For this to look attractive, you should have the base right, and with effort and consistency, you can achieve the perfect thick eyebrows. So, here are some remedies, to grow back your eyebrows and enhance their look:

Vitamin E capsules

Vitamin E oil enhances hair growth and strengthens the hair from the follicle. Because it contains tocotrienol, an antioxidant, it really helps in reducing any stress that may be affecting the hair growth process. Carefully open the vitamin capsule, apply the oil on your eyebrows, massage it for a few minutes, and leave it on for the night.

Castor Oil

Coconut milk

One of the oldest and the most popular methods of growing hair is to use castor oil.

It is used as an alternative to the castor oil. Coconuts are full of vitamins and iron. It is even used to darken the hairs of eyebrows for a prominent look. Soak a cotton ball in coconut milk and apply gently. Leave it overnight then rinse off.

It works wonders if you apply it consistently. The fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants in this oil help greatly in regenerating the eyebrows. Simply massage the area with the oil and leave it on at least for half an hour.

Rosemary Essential Oil Rosemary oil has been found to be very beneficial for the growth of hair. This oil stimulates blood circulation and cell division. For great results, add few drops of the oil on your eyebrows, and leave it overnight. For maximum results, always keep a bottle near night stand to remember applying it before sleeping.

WHEN CULINARY ART MEETS FASHION

n an enlightening talk with Mirette Aly, the Co-founder of The Lemon Tree & Co., she shares insights far beyond the culinary scene as we know it. Determined, vivacious and full of passion; Mirette has put all her heart and energy in creating an original concept of upscale dining focusing on the elements of consistency and genuineness. Isn’t A Profession, ‘‘ Being AIt Chef Is A Way of Life

‘‘

30 | JULY 2018

1.FIRST, WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR CULINARY JOURNEY. HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN? There was a lot that I have done before embarking on that journey and choosing this career; between modeling, acting, media management and a little bit of real estate. Being in the fashion field, mainly modeling, took place during university days and was part of my studying process. I carried on with modeling after graduation. I loved it and honored it while it happened, but at the end of the day, I always knew that modeling would be on the side. I decided to leave all that in pursuit of something I have grown up passionate about. We all have a story behind where we are today, and mine began with my grandma’s food. While I was 12 years of age, I dreamt of having my own five-table restaurant and used to tell my grandma how I imagined it to be like. From the seating, the overall ambiance, to the type of food; the picture was so vivid and so close to being real. When my grandma fell sick, I wasn’t happy with the assistance we had from the household cook, the taste wasn’t just the same. I didn’t know I can cook until I had to interfere and that is when I began to get into the kitchen. Later on, when my husband and I met, he was in the process of renovating and reinventing one of his places into a new brand concept. I offered to help with the menu. Sooner than I thought I found myself working with chefs and learning more techniques. I did this with all my heart and it was such a beautiful transitional phase in my life. I learned that being a chef isn’t a profession, but rather a way of life. Despite how challenging, hectic and fast-paced this period of my life was, it was spectacular in every way. This journey has built a lot of things in me, I discovered tolerances I never thought I had, and opened my eyes to a new version of who I am. 2.CUISINES AROUND THE GLOBE UNDERGO REGULAR CHANGE AND HAVE EVOLVED AFFECTED BY OTHER CULTURES. DO YOU BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE ALSO TRENDS WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD? Food is highly influenced by cultures and the fact that there are very fast means of

JULY 2018 | 31

communication, has made the ethnicity of food easily accessible by people of different cultures. From here began the notion of food trends. Information now can be passed easily and effortlessly. So accordingly, people began to notice that some recipes have evolved using new and different ingredients. Previously, countries were only exposed to limited cooking techniques like let’s say French or Italian, as well as being limited to certain ingredients. The culinary scene in the past 20 years have skyrocketed all over the globe, especially that people have become more interested to travel to different spots around the world and to learn more about different cultures and cuisines. Let’s take for instance the Japanese influence on the Peruvian cuisine that has resulted in the emergence of the Japeruvian cuisine which is now considered one of the best and most favored around the world. Worth to mention, in the early 2000s sushi wasn’t popular in Egypt, but nowadays and due to the easy accessibility to other cultures, sushi has become commercial food in Egypt. If anything, this proves that food also can be either fashionable or outdated. One of the biggest trends nowadays is the Zero Km Food concept adopted by the renowned Chef Anna Roche. The concept denotes the food that is produced, sold, and eaten locally travelling zero kilometers. I believe that this is the kind of trends that should go contagious around the world. I wish that we resort back to nature and let it do its magic as opposed to our dependence on processed food. 3.WHAT WAS THE MAIN CONCEPT BEHIND THE LEMON TREE & CO.? Basically, we didn’t want The Lemon Tree & Co. to be yet another dressy seated restaurant with the same playlist going over and over again. We wanted to build a harmony intertwining delectable dishes and delightful company in upscale casual setting. Our objective was to bring different elements together in an experience that is far beyond being just a bar. The Lemon Tree & Co. is about creating a memorable experience that stimulates your five senses. We like to position ourselves as a venue that guests would crave going back to.

32 | JULY 2018

When it comes to food, our ideology is to honor Mother Nature and respect the seasons. While I’m here doing what I love, I like to honor this notion through the recipes and menus. We put a lot of effort in creating menus based on the food resources available in every season. This is our 64th menu, and that’s how The Lemon Tree and Co. revolves around the idea of creating food based on the seasonality of the produce. 4.IT IS A VERY COMPETITIVE MARKET OUT THERE. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES THE LEMON TREE & CO. STAND OUT, AND THE ELEMENTS BEHIND ITS STRONG POSITIONING? I believe it is because we aren’t built on the concept of being a trend. Our secret relies on the way we keep things consistent. As much as it can be very difficult, I think this is our biggest achievement. When I speak about consistency, I refer to consistency of creating an unrivalled experience for guests to relish every time they visit. I also believe that one of our strengths is that we are not focused on comparing and competing with what’s happening around us. We only focus on where we are today, the types of challenges we face, and how we can improve and progress. 5.THE KITCHEN’S OPERATIONS CAN BE AMONG THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECTS. WHAT IS THE SECRET BEHIND MANAGING A SUCCESSFUL STAFF AND A TEAM WORKING IN HARMONY? Everything that I stand for revolves around respecting the people around me and supporting me. I believe that my team gives me the power to do more. The key to becoming a true leader in the kitchen will always be respect. When you treat people with respect and humility, they will do everything in their power to keep you satisfied. 6.HOW DO YOU REGARD THE DINING SCENE IN EGYPT CURRENTLY IN COMPARISON TO THE PAST YEARS? The culinary scene in Egypt has tremendously grown. There are several entities that currently master this industry through their exquisite dining menus, immaculate service, and ravishing ambiance. I believe that the ones who will stay throughout this vicious marathon are those who stand out with their identity. JULY 2018 | 33

7.HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE WORKING WITH YOUR LIFE COMPANION? We are complete opposites at work and this is what creates balance in the outcome. My husband, Ahmed Hanafi, is a real genius and when that is combined with my dedication and persistence, miracles happen. Working together is definitely not easy, but I couldn’t have ever imagined working with anyone else. 8.BESIDES YOUR CAREER, WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? I love music; I can’t even begin to explain how music has a significant impact on my mood. 9.BASED ON YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A MODEL, HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE FASHION? Fashion as a notion is how you use trends and apply 34 | JULY 2018

them to your life in a way that reflects the best image of yourself and not by being someone else. 10. 5 WORDS THAT BEST DESCRIBE YOU? Stubborn, loving, honest, sometimes grumpy, and productive. 11.AND HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR LIFE PHILOSOPHY? The better you are on the inside, the more good will happen to you. Don’t fool yourself, stare at that person in front of you in the mirror and be true to who you are. No one is perfect and we are not meant to be perfect, just try to be the best version of yourself. Be the kindest that you can be, be the most patient that you can be, and don’t hang your problems and drawbacks on other people’s shoulders.

SURPRISING DECOR TRICKS THAT AFFECT YOUR MOOD BY: HANAN MARWAN It’s a relief to come home to unwind and de-stress. Regardless of spending the night in you might wake up the next morning feeling drained with minimal or absolutely no power to face the day ahead. That’s due to all the plugged activities you do during the day and even when you get back home. TVs, mobile phones, laptops suck the energy out of your body and mind. Certain designs implemented in public areas might seem like mindless coincidences but are really strategically crafted to manipulate your subconscious. Many of which can be adapted in the comfort of your own home.

ESTABLISH BOUNDARY You need to draw a cutoff line between work and home. That should be done as soon as you walk in. Create an area near the door where you place everything you came in with, keys, bag, shoes, coat etc. This will help you feel like a load has been lifted off your shoulders. Change into those comfy slippers and crack your neck, it’s time to slow the pace.

38 | NOVEMBER 2018

DEVELOPING ROUTINE Running around to do chores is just as bad as running errands. How about dividing them by making your bed in the morning and taking a few minutes to walk through the house putting things in their places before bedtime. Keeping the place tidy and decluttered has a direct effect in sustaining organized thoughts. As you walk into the bedroom, an inviting bed will be waiting for you and you’ll wake up to a well put together space in the morning.

BIOPHILIC DESIGN Creating interior that connects people to nature. Green plants and fresh flowers are antitoxins, they’re used as air purifiers to help you breath. It has also been said that shades of green evoke the feeling of hunger, making it the perfect shade for kitchen and dining rooms. Light up some candles, add a small fountain, or even clay pots or vases with pebbles just about anywhere. Something as simple as letting a little fresh air and natural light in can make a world of difference.

ENGAGE YOUR SENSES You’re home you’re safe. It’s time to open the window, play some music, light up some candles and feel that fluffy rug with your barefoot or maybe play with the kids. Get in touch with the core of your existence. If that isn’t a luxury you can enjoy, then dim the lights about an hour before bed time to help your mind slow down and relax for deeper sleep.

PROBIOTICS: THE MIRACLE BACTERIA To maintain a balanced life style, you have to always monitor how your body functions, how it reacts to specific food, and know about what are your daily nutritional needs. And if you are not aware of what your body needs, you won’t be able to fix the problem. And as we all know, it all starts from within, and if you keep your gut healthy, your whole body will be able to perform better. One of the things to help protect your stomach health is Probiotics. But what are these? And are they really effective? Let’s see:

WHAT EXACTLY ARE PROBIOTICS? Probiotics are considered the friendly bacteria found in the human gut. While bacteria are often related to causing infection, the probiotics a.k.a miracle bacteria play a variety of important roles. These bacteria can help decrease the bad bacteria in your gut that can cause infection or inflammation. PROBIOTICS COME IN THREE FORMS So, you have to know how to get your hands on the miracle bacteria, and it is way easier than it seems. With trust worthy professional recommendations, you can incorporate probiotics in your daily meals. Probiotics come in three different forms; either found as a dietary supplement, in certain beverages, or in food such as yogurt and some types of cheese. 42 | NOVEMBER 2018

PROBIOTICS ARE ALREADY FOUND IN OUR BODIES Our bodies have natural probiotics in them, not only that, recent studies discovered bacteria in the babies’ bodies before they were born. So, we have this miracle solution in our bodies, but some just don’t have enough of it. So it’s our job to maintain the good bacteria we have. SO WHAT CAN PROBIOTICS DO? Other than fighting the bad bacteria in our bodies, they populate your digestive system with bacteria that prevents inflammation. Also, research suggests that probiotics can effectively treat diarrhea and constipation. They’re also important for vaginal health and prevent recurrent urinary tract infections.

CARDIO VS. WEIGHT LIFTING

S

hould I lift weights or just focus on cardio? This is a frequent question that encounters anyone who is getting into the world of fitness and working out. There are some people who want to hit the gym, finish their reps really quick and see instant results, while others prefer running outside for half an hour everyday and are pretty satisfied with the results. To put an end to this relentless question, here are some facts about cardio and weight lifting to help you come up with the perfect workout routine.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO EXERCISE? Cardio exercises mainly depend on raising your heart rate. Cardio exercises include running, swimming, jumping ropes, cycling, and more. Cardio helps you burn calories, improve metabolism and strengthen your heart and lungs. On the other hand, weight lifting sculpts and tones your body. WHICH BURNS MORE CALORIES? One of the main triggers for the war between the two exercises, is the number of calories burned. With Cardio, the calorie burn finishes off when the workout is completed. While you might get an extra 40-80 calories burned, this depends merely on the intensity and duration of the workout. 44 | NOVEMBER 2018

With weight training, you are able to build a larger degree of lean muscle mass, that basically serves as a calorie-burning powerhouse in the body. The more muscle you have on your body, the higher this rate will be and the better the calorie-burning results you will obtain. CARDIO OR WEIGHT LIFTING? It merely depends on whether you want to lose weight or get toned. Cardio is generally essential for your health, and is considered to be important as a daily activity even if you don’t want to lose weight. Weight lifting is what will make you get those great toned thighs and shoulders, and don’t worry about getting hugely muscular, because it takes a lot of time and effort to actually bulk from weights.

Interview

Maestro: Dining With An Italian Flair Italian cuisine can be the most exquisite among other cuisines from around the world. Known for its fresh and simple ingredients, Italian food is the furthest it can be from being complicated or complex. At Intercontinental Citystars Maestro brings the taste of Italy to the heart of Cairo. Amidst rich interiors that radiate elegance and warmth, we had a talk with Chef Paolo Covallini to learn more about this cuisine. 1. FIRST, WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW DID YOUR CAREER AS A CHEF BEGIN ? This goes way back in time at early 80s. I come from Como Italy, and my career began right after my graduation. I worked at seventeen countries across several regions between Middle East, Far East, and Caribbean. My experience here in Egypt started with joining Intercontinental Citystars, and I can tell that the country is promising and filled with the energy and optimism of the youth. Based on my experience in the Middle East, and as I’ve already visited Egypt almost twenty years ago, I’m familiar with the culture here and I’m looking forward to explore the country as it is today with new experiences. 2. ITALIAN CUISINE IS AMONG THE MOST FAVORED AROUND THE WORLD. IN YOUR OPINION WHAT MAKES THIS CUISINE SO SPECIAL ? I believe the secret is in the simplicity of our culinary heritage. Italian cuisine relies on using several simple ingredients in a cooking technique that refrains from complexity. After all, Italian cuisine is also Mediterranean, so we share the same ingredients used in several countries of that region including Egypt, the difference is in the technique and the preparation. Italian food is uncomplicated yet at the same time very flavorful. The ingredients aren’t overcooked, and this why you can experience the natural taste of every ingredient on its own. Through my current role as a chef, my main goal is to deliver excellence and make our guests experience the authentic taste of Italy.

3. WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS THAT ARE USED THE MOST IN THE ITALIAN CUISINE ? There are various ingredients like cheese, specially gorgonzola, vinegar, various oil, pasta, and most importantly tomato. 4. HOW DO YOU MAKE MAESTRO STAND OUT ? I believe that using premium ingredients is something you can’t compromise. We use top local ingredients as well as imported so that every dish is an indulgence onto its own. We craft our menus to best suit our guests’ preference while keeping the authentic identity of the Italian cuisine. As a chef, my approach is traditional and I like to steer away from fusions and complicated dishes. 5. WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT YOUR PROFESSION ? Despite the fact that I’ve been doing this job for decades, I still have this adrenaline rush every time I prepare a dish. My main motivation is to know that our guests have relished a unique experience and to present Italian food as it truly is, authentically and genuinely. I am a very dynamic person and I like to keep myself busy all the while at the kitchen. When it comes to kitchen’s operations, together with my great team we focus our energy on delivering an exquisite dining experience to our esteemed guests. I can firmly say that nothing beats the feeling of being in action in the kitchen. NOVEMBER 2018 | 49

Relationships

Emotional Vampires in Toxic Relationships BY: SARAH KHALED A good relationship can elevate your life in ways that you never thought were possible. A bad relationship can leave you heartbroken, depressed and restless. There will be times when you have doubts about your relationship, wondering if the person you are with is actually ‘the one’ for you. You may often find yourself questioning your decision to stay with them over and over again. If that is the case, it is possible your relationship might be toxic for you. A toxic relationship can affect one’s mental and emotional health greatly. People in poor relationships are often seen to suffer from anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and are susceptible to illness. Therefore, it is important that you are fully aware if you’re living with an emotional vampire who poisons your life everyday. WHO IS THE EMOTIONAL VAMPIRE? These types of people tend to drain the emotional energy of practically everyone around them. They then feed off on them; to make themselves feel better. They are people who have very low self-esteem, they need constant attention from others and they believe that they are not at fault for the things that are happening to them. SOME TYPES OF EMOTIONAL VAMPIRES:

4- The Victim: “You are against me.” He refuses to acknowledge that their pains and problems may have been self-inflicted and selfgenerated. He is not the one at fault; the world is. 5- The Paranoid: “I don’t trust you.” Paranoid vampire is one that harbors and even nurtures a high degree of distrust for everyone. It is difficult to maintain a relationship with the Paranoid, since he will never completely trust you.

1- The Narcissist: “The world revolves around me.” He wants to be on stage the whole time, and he hungers for the admiration of other people because, from his point of view, he truly deserves it. He has a tendency to become cold and extremely reserved when things don’t go his way specially with his partner.

6- The Controller: “Listen to me, I know it all.” He has an overwhelming desire to be the dominant one in any setting. He becomes particularly annoying when he starts to tell you what to do, especially when it comes to your problems. He has this notion that he knows what is best for you, and you don’t.

2- The Obsessive – Compulsive: “Do it right, or else…” This person is competent, diligent and a hard worker, and he does deliver great results. The problem is that he expects everyone else to be the same, so when they fail to do that, he does not hesitate to punish people around him.

7- The Constant Talker: “Etc……” He never stops talking. He seems to love hearing his own voice, without sparing a thought about others. He does not care about your feelings or emotions. You just have to listen to him.

8- The Splitter: “Today is the best day ever unlike yesterday.” 3- The Criticizer: “That’s wrong, I like the You will be walking on eggshells around him, today other one more.” he is your best pal and tomorrow you might be joking This is a generous person in handing out his with him and he flips the entire situation upside criticisms, often claiming that they are constructive down. You will be in a position where you should be and he’s giving them with good intentions. However, watching everything you say or do. You will feel that in the process, he will belittle you and even make you have to adjust to his mood swings all the time. you feel small and weak, because that is one way to elevate his own status. 52 | JULY 2018

ESCAPING EMOTIONAL VAMPIRES: • Set boundaries and limits, learn how to say NO. You have to show them that you refuse to fall prey to their conspiracies. • If you decided on a course of action to keep these emotional vampires at bay, then stick to it. • Do not give them the opportunity to prey on you. Emotional vampires prey on those who are weaker than they are, or those with insecurities and low self-esteem. Work on yourself, and this will add several layers of “protection” against these energy suckers. • Learn to control your emotions. Rule over them instead of letting them rule over you. Maintaining calmness within you is the first step to being able to control your reactions. You can control how your interaction with an emotional vampire will go by keeping a handle on your emotions and controlling your reactions. FINALLY WHEN YOU CAN’T FIX IT, IT’S TIME TO GO OUT !
