Bites & Crumbs! I know it’s our health issue and I know I’m supposed to write something about it! But hey, you will find this inside! The issue is just stuffed with everything and anything you need for a healthy lifestyle! As for my letter, I’ve chosen to write about food! OK, I love food! And I picked the tiniest thing in food: bites and crumbs… I usually do this; I order something to eat (which is often a whole meal!), and leave my favorite piece till the end. But sadly, every time I do this, fullness hits me! And I stupidly insist on doing this over and over! This makes me miss the chance of enjoying my favorite piece and miss enjoying what I am already eating. Between fullness and anticipation, I lose my appetite. And I begin a series of regret while looking at my favorite piece being taken away by the waiter! I continued stubbornly to do this till I decided very strictly to eat the pieces I love ONLY! To begin with my favorite piece and eat what’s appealing to me, and it happily worked out to be one of the best decisions in my life! Now the waiter carries away the plate and I smile cheerfully because I have the piece I love the most in my stomach! Digesting it joyfully! OK, it might sound naive, but when applied in real life matters, dramatic changes happened to me. I choose the things I love, I choose to stick to the people I enjoy, I choose to workout on my own terms, I choose to eat what I want and lose weight when I feel like it. I choose a job I love, and a hobby I adore. I choose, I decide and I am up to it! I choose to make the little things as tiny as bites and crumbs a huge source of happiness to me… The greatest motivation comes from within, happiness is a choice, being positive is a decision and holding on to the little things in life is what makes it worth living… And most importantly, living happily… Saving the best for the last doesn’t really apply in life! When you find something you love, hold on to it for you might not get a chance to enjoy it later… I don’t want to sound pessimistic; on the contrary this will ensure you enjoy each and every day of your life… Pick your bites and crumbs and enjoy them to the fullest!

A lifelong vegetarian, Stella McCartney does not use any leather or fur in her designs. She supports PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). Some of McCartney’s designs have text that elaborates on her “no animal” policy; for example, one of her jackets for adidas says, “suitable for sporty vegetarians” on the sleeve. Stella does use wool, silk, and other animal-derived fabrics in her designs.

In September 2010, Stella McCartney was appointed Team GB’s Creative Director for the 2012 Olympics by adidas, the first time in the history of the games that a leading fashion designer has designed the apparel for a country’s team across all competitions for both the Olympic and the Paralympic Games. McCartney commented, “The first place to start on a project like this is to look at the Union flag. For me it’s one of the most beautiful flags in the world and it was important for me to stay true to that iconic design but also to modernise it and present it in a contemporary way. Ultimately, we wanted the athletes to feel like a team and be proud with the identity we created.”

Everyone can do simple things to make a difference, and every little bit really does count. Stella McCartney

“This partnership has brought together the best in performance technology through adidas, the best in British design and creativity with Stella McCartney and the best in British sport with athletes from Our Greatest Team. Performance is our number one priority and the superb combination of adidas and Stella is sure to impact positively on Team GB,” said Team GB Chef de Mission and Chief Executive of the BOA, Andy Hunt.

The First Glimpse Of Deana Shaaban’s Jewelry Collection

In keeping with the Deana Shaaban brand philosophy, the launch of the first jewelry collection line speaks volumes about the capability of crosscultural beauty. The collection is composed of semi-precious stones, crystal, and silver from Thailand, India, Morocco, Turkey and of course Egypt. Every design is composed of pieces from all over the world that have come together to create harmonious masterpieces. The pieces burst with color and creativity making each piece unique and unorthodox in its own way. Every design is composed of rare pieces, so no two designs will be repeated just as the custom designed evening and wedding gowns are. Every woman is unique in her own right and the jewelry she wears should be true to that belief. The jewelry collection is a new line that has been added to the Deana Shaaban brand and will continue to debut every season with the coming of new collections.

Fashion

Fashionably functional!

Look your best while working out! SMART SPORTY BUYS! Blister-Busting Socks: The simple sock can be a great investment. Tender toes can stay dry and fashionable with a good pair of socks. A pair of socks that helps to prevent blisters can make a huge difference in your workout. Anyone who has ever run or spun their way through a workout with oozing wounds on their feet will tell you that a good pair of socks is one of the best investments you can make.

Outfits from Alexander Wang, Helmut Lang, Phillip Lim, Rag & Bone, and Victoria Beckham

iPods and iPod Armbands: Listening to music can help your workouts and the right strap will keep your player in place. Unless you’re inspired by the buzzing and whirring of an elliptical machine, you probably use upbeat tunes to motivate your workout. An iPod filled with your favorite songs can fuel any exercise while keeping you fashionably up-todate with the latest music. Music is an essential part of every workout. Have different playlists for your mood and to suit your different workouts. If you’re a swimmer invest in the Finis SwiMP3 player.

Groovy Gym Bags: Choose a gym bag that will complement your busy schedule. Very few people go straight from home to the gym and back home again. Having a nice bag to hold your gear can be the difference between being presentable before or after your workout.

Gentle Gym Towels: No one should have to rub her face with a gym towel that looks like an old garage rag. If you love wrapping your body in fluffy towels after a shower, invest in a workout towel that is gentle on the skin and highly absorbent. Gym towels start to feel like sandpaper pretty quickly, and they don’t always look like the kind of thing that you want to rub all over your face or body. A soft, sport-friendly towel will look and feel much better than the alternative. 18 |

| September 2012

Pick The Right Sports Bra: Stay away from sports bras that are made of 100% cotton because once you start sweating, they’ll stay wet. If you have a large chest and need a lot of support, look for sports bras with wide shoulder straps and racer back straps. If you like bras with under wire, check that the under wire is completely covered so it will not gouge. Make sure you try on several different size sports bras.

SMART SPORTY BUYS!

Aria Scale: It’s simple, clean and there’s something more friendly about the small round screen that reports your weight. Another plus is it’s a smart scale that connects to FitBit.com so you can access graphs and models to monitor factors like your weight and body fat percentage, similar to the Wii Fit.

Nike Fuel Band: It is equipped with a USB charger that syncs up with all devices and honestly the main appeal is that it looks cool. The LED lights and flashes of “GOAL” are kind of awesome. If you want to track your calories and set goals for how much you move with a sophisticated device, this is definitely an option with style.

Model Edita Vilkeviciute

JAWBONE UP: The Jawbone UP is another sexy tracking device that comes with a handy mobile app, just like the Nike Fuel Band. The price isn’t as steep and there are a couple more functions for those looking to track steps, calories, sleep patterns and even your meals.>>

You can connect the Sportiiis with a Mac, PC or smartphone in order to download the workout program.

SPOTTED CELEBS LATEST NEWS & GOSSIP

BREAKUP! Robert Pattinson, Single! Just weeks ago, Robert Pattinson was holed up at pal Reese Witherspoon’s ranch, moping over the state of his relationship and refusing to take calls from his cheating girlfriend Kristen Stewart, who had an affair with married “Snow White” director Rupert Sanders. His wife, model Liberty Ross has reportedly handed her husband a pre-nup agreement over Kristen Stewart affair. While Robert, 26, was seen partying and having fun with all his friends, he looked far from brokenhearted. Rather than hiding away, he was lapping up the attention and behaving very much like a single man. He was downing beers and chatting to a pretty blonde.

Vivienne Jolie-Pitt to Make Film Debut in “Maleficent” Angelina Jolie’s daughter Vivienne will soon make her film debut alongside her famous mother in “Maleficent.” The four-year-old will have a small role in the project, a re-telling of the tale of Sleeping Beauty from the point of view of her horned, evil nemesis. Vivienne will play a younger version of Princess Aurora, played by Elle Fanning.

Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise OK After Garbage Truck Hits Their Car Katie Holmes and daughter Suri Cruise had a bumpy ride recently, after their car was hit by a garbage truck. According to People, the star mother and daughter were leaving the Chelsea Piers recreational center, when a garbage truck struck their Mercedes.

Jessica Biel Had ‘No Say Whatsoever’ in Ring Justin Timberlake Gave Her When it came time for Justin Timberlake to pick an engagement ring for fiancée Jessica Biel, the singer/actor/designer made the decision all by himself. “Justin is fearless in his choices and has a real eye for design. And I’ll be honest: He has better taste than I do!” Biel said, explaining that Justin often helps her pick out what to wear.

Katy Perry Turned Down “American Idol” $20 Million Offer! American Idol first offered Katy Perry $18 million for a one-year contract, with that number jumping up to $20 million. However, she still refused. “People have reached out to me about the possibility of being involved, and it’s not right for me yet,” she said. American Idol, which lost both Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler after last season, has been busy trying to rebuild its judging table with some A-List names, perhaps to compete with “The X Factor” and “The Voice.” So far, only Mariah Carey has signed on for next season, and will reportedly bring in around $18 million. 22 |

2-WHAT PRECAUTIONS SHOULD I TAKE BEFORE GETTING A MANICURE AT A SALON? AND HOW CAN I TAKE GOOD CARE OF MY FINGERNAILS? It’s important to bring your own instruments to avoid picking up germs from another client. If salon employees are dipping their instruments in some kind of solution, that’s not going to kill bacteria and fungus. They should be using an autoclave, a type of machine for sterilizing instruments. Keep your fingernails dry and clean. This prevents bacteria and fungi from growing under your fingernails. Wear cotton-lined rubber gloves when washing dishes, cleaning or using harsh chemicals, and avoid long soaks in the tub. Trim and file your fingernails regularly. Use a sharp manicure scissors or clippers. Use: Sally Hansen nail clippers and Sally Hansen cuticle trimmer. Trim your nails straight across, then round the tips in a gentle curve when they’re soft; after bathing. Use moisturizer. When you use hand lotion, rub the lotion into your fingernails and cuticles, too. Use: Bath & Body Works True Blue Spa Super-Softening Hand Lotion, Nivea Express Hydration Hand Lotion, Olay Collections Purely Pristine Hand & Body Lotion, or Sally Hansen Nails & Cuticles Hand Cream 24 HR Moisture.

Beauty

Achieving The Perfect Look,

EFFORTLESS!

BY: REHAM KHALIFA

I believe that nowadays makeup has become an important tool that highlights the beauty of a woman more than before, women have became more in to makeup trends, especially after the new colors that have extended from costumes colors (neon clothes) to makeup. This summer a lot of makeup trends have appeared using daring colors that could be used to emphasize the features of a woman to look prettier. I think that one of them is focusing on the eyes.

The perfect makeup is always achieved by following the proper steps, using quality products and most importantly adapting the look to occasion and age. Looking fabulous is not always attributed to good genes; makeup too can be a perfect beauty booster that can help you switch up your look from day to evening by accentuating your best features. The most current eye makeup trends are using bright bold colors that are chic and fun. Try going for a bold, neon eye with a soft nude lip or the other way round depending on your mood. If bold and bright colors scare you just a bit, try incorporating one brighter color with an old standby favorite, so girls try something new, such as yellow, orange and purple shades. Using these colors, you get a secret passion makeup.

26 |

| September 2012

The other big trend is BIG eyebrows. Brushed upwards, anything to make them bigger! Also, the “Walk like an Egyptian” look (Cleopatra’s look) is an idea that you could implement to your eyes. First, line both the lower and upper lash line with a dark liner. Carefully apply the liner beginning where your eyebrow ends towards the outer corner of the eye. Casual chic cat eye makeup provides you with a quick beauty fix. Define your eyes with black eyeliner and tint the lips with a nude shade for a subtle effect. Of course, smokey eye is here to stay for a really long time. It was really big in 2011 and is set get bigger in 2012. This look requires shades of blacks, browns, and even copper. It is a little difficult to blend these colors and create a smokey effect, once you master this art, it is only a matter of few minutes for that phenomenal transformation from the girl next door to the gorgeous diva that you really are. So, go sexy my girls! Now, we have come to another commonly used beauty product which is lipstick, the thing that makes your lips look sexier and hotter. Bright, bold and colorful lips are recommended and can look lovely this summer (pink, simon, fuchia, etc...). But make sure you have applied it carefully; there’s nothing worse than lipstick on your teeth. Red lipstick is still vogue and chic. A nice bold red lipstick is perfect for garden parties and summer festivals. Nude makeup look will never go out of style. It just means simplifying your

makeup color palette, using neutral colors that match your skin perfectly and covering imperfections without looking madeup. To get this look you must follow one basic rule: the less color, the better. The nude look involves using a few basic, neutral colors, such as rose, beige or peach. Blush should have only a light tint, similar to your natural coloring. When it comes to your lips, go with either a neutral lip gloss or a natural-toned lipstick. I believe that natural makeup will always leave you looking fresh, beautiful and radiant. When we come to the evening look, most women want to know some tips because we, women, enjoy dolling ourselves up, looking our best and feeling pretty. You can put more bronzer to make yourself glow, “The Body Shop Shimmer Waves” in bronze is one of my all time favorite bronzers. It gives the skin a lustrous and natural glow. Blend the blusher up your cheek bones to create a natural, healthy color. A fine dusting of bronzer over the top can help extra pigmented blushes look a little more natural. Use eye shadow that matches with the color of your dress and a bright lipstick, and maybe more eyeliner. Also, doll eyelashes could add more dramatic look to your eyes, so give it a try and don’t be shy. Lastly, don’t forget that great makeup starts by having healthy and clean skin that will help you have a gorgeous look.

I’ll bet you can relate. So I try to make things as streamlined as possible for the kids and me (my husband is on his own and his routine is already pretty basic). One of the places where I spend colossal amounts of time is in front of the make-up mirror, though it wasn’t always that way. Here’s how I go from wake up to wow in just about 5 minutes and you can too.

5-Minute Makeup: How To Get a Fresh Face Fast .Clean and moisturize your face: Clean and moisturize your face; you wouldn’t put dirty clothes on a clean body would you? The premise is the same here. As for moisturizer, I usually use one with an SPF of 20 all the time. Even in wintertime, you need to protect your skin from the sun. Clinique’s Even Better Skin Tone Correcting Moisturizer SPF20

.Use a simple but good foundation: No more heavy pancake make-up for me. It’s faster, easier and more natural looking to go with something like a tinted moisturizer. I use a foundation brush, which gives fast and even coverage. Make sure to clean your brushes regularly (use baby shampoo or special brush cleanser), as that will also help your make-up go on evenly. .Brush your face with powder: Again, I’m trying to stay away from that heavily made-up look, so I choose a loose powder and apply with a brush. During the day, instead of piling on more, I just use blot powder or blot papers on the shiny areas.

.Play up the cheeks: Cream blush, applied with my fingers, is the way to go for me. Smile and pat the blush on the apples of your cheeks. Make sure you don’t see any lines. You could also use powder blush, but if you do, make sure you use it after the cream.

.Brighten the eyes and gloss the lips: This was the best trick I learned from a colleague makeup artist. She would sweep a bit of blush over the eyelids before the eye shadow and instantly you looked wide awake. These days I do that instead of color. I add a little eyeliner, mascara and a sheer lip color and I’m out the door. How do you manage to look good, fast? I would like to know. Sent your comment on facebook fanpage: Jojolanda-MakeUp-Hair

Faces of Egypt Salma Shabana as a champoin chose Jazzercise (which is known to be a respectable, well known brand) as an investment for her future. “In today's fast-paced lives where health often takes a backseat, it’s time one should begin to give their bodies their dues,” says Salma Shabana. She adds, “Studies have shown that women who work out have a better self image than women who do not, even at comparable weight. Exercise makes you feel good, it improves your self-confidence, and that positively impacts the way you deal with the people around you.”

I

f you care about your body and health, love to have fun and dance, then you definitely came across Jazzercise! It’s the worldwide dance-based exercise phenomenon which hit Cairo earlier this year.

Jazzercise was established in 1969 by Judi Sheppard Missett, a modern dancer, who invented a way to combine her love of dance, music, and exercise. The franchise has grown exponentially and internationally but still revolves around the same principles. Jazzercise combines music, dance, Pilates, yoga, kickboxing, and resistance training in a set program that lasts 60 minutes. We could not miss the chance of interviewing Salma Shabana; Operation Manager, Jazzercise to give us a vamp. 30 |

GIVE US A BRIEF ABOUT YOURSELF. I studied at the American University in Cairo, Sociology major, and I graduated in 2001. I started playing squash at the age of 6. I would play anywhere with a vertical surface; the walls of the house, my bedroom cupboards, anywhere really! WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SQUASH IN PARTICULAR? I initially played because both of my parents were very sporty, and it was also a good way to annoy my brother Amr Shabana (he is now 4 time world champion!) I played many sports, but I always felt most comfortable on the squash court. Once I started play-

ing competitively, I focused on squash and it became my life! WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE SQUASH PLAYER? AND WHY DO YOU LIKE HIM/HER? I have to say Amr (my brother) always was and always will be my favorite. He has talent, charisma, perseverance and a passion for the game. I have huge respect for him both as a person and an athlete. WHAT WERE THE MOST IMPORTANT COMPETITIONS YOU PARTICIPATED IN? I participated in 2 World Junior Championships, 4 Women’s World Championships, 2 African Nations and 1 All Arab Championships. In all of them I

was the Egyptian Team’s Captain. WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES OR DIFFICULTIES YOU FACED? Sometimes getting up in the morning when all your muscles are stiff is a challenge. Taking my (then) 7 month old son on a tournament and trying to fit his feeding schedule with my match schedule is a challenge. Fitting in my workouts in my busy work schedule is also a challenge! WHAT'S YOUR BIGGEST MOTIVATION? I want to keep fit and play squash as good as I do now for as long as possible to be able to play with my kids just like my parents did with me.

JAZZERCISE IS A GREAT WAY TO STAY FIT AND HEALTHY, BOTH PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY. Salma Shabana

Faces of Egypt A BRIGHT FACE OF EGYPT AT THE OLYMPICS 2012: BADMINTON CHAMPION

HADIA

HOSNY Hadia is a 23 year old athlete, made history when she competed in Beijing Olympics badminton tournament in 2008 and was able to secure a spot in London Olympics 2012. Hadia is currently pursuing her Masters degree in Medical Biosciences at the University of Bath, where she also dedicates a lot of her time to badminton training under the supervision of the best international coaches. We were lucky to have a chance to interview her for inspiring you and we raise thumbs up to her! HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE COMPETING AT THE LONDON OLYMPICS WITH OTHER TOP RANKED PLAYERS? It was an amazing experience, especially that it was after many years of hard work to qualify so I felt rewarded after a long time of effort. Competing with the best players in the world is a wonderful experience. HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU KNEW THAT YOU HAD QUALIFIED FOR THE LONDON 2012 OLYMPICS? I had the best feeling in my life, I qualified to Beijing before but after withdrawals as I was in the reserve list. But this time since I made the first qualification list as top African and also took the 46th place so I made it in both ways, I was glad about this success. 32 |

| September 2012

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AND THE DIFFICULTIES YOU FACED AT THE OLYMPICS? The difficulties I faced during the Games was that there was no accreditation for my coach so I had to find a way to make him a training pass everyday to get trained and until the last day before the match he had no accreditation to accompany me to the match so I felt very stressed but finally it was done. I also had to search a lot to get my parents tickets to watch me. I would have felt very sorry if they hadn’t watched me at the Olympics, as well as my sister and nephew. The experience was fantastic, being with world champions at the Olympic Village, I had the best moments in my life and enjoyed it and had a very different birthday on the 30th of July, the day of my match. Got amazing calls from Dato, the Chief, Mr. Mayer and a lot more which really made my day.

schools and maybe also make some fun days for seniors.

WHAT WERE YOUR FEELINGS AS AN EGYPTIAN PLAYER REPRESENTING EGYPT? It was great to make history for the second time and be the first Egyptian and Arab to participate in badminton at the Olympic Games. I am really proud.

ARE YOU GOING TO TAKE PART IN ANY TOURNAMENTS IN 2012? Still no plans at the moment after the Olympics since now the federation’s elections are taking place.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO TAKE UP BADMINTON ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT A POPULAR SPORT IN EGYPT? I used to play gymnastics, horse riding, and squash till I was 10 and had to stop all due to injury. When I came back, I only returned to squash. I was playing squash in my school at the age of 11 when my teacher, who was a national team badminton player, told me about badminton Hadia though I never did know it earlier. So I went to practice with him for three weeks, I came in third at the national tournament under 12 years old and I was very excited and I trained harder till I came in the first place next year. And here I am now; I love badminton and I am addicted to it. People should know that it is really an enjoyable sport.

I HAVE BEEN USED TO WORKING HARD SINCE I WAS A CHILD, AND BY TIME MANAGEMENT, ORGANIZATION AND GOOD PLANS, EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE.

WILL YOU CONTINUE TO PLAY BADMINTON AT THE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL MOVING FORWARD? I achieved top African but I am still over hundred in my world rank, so I want to stop competing internationally after I achieve top world rank. HOW CAN YOU HELP TO PROMOTE OR DEVELOP BADMINTON TO BECOME A POPULAR SPORT IN EGYPT? I think after London 2012, more people know about badminton. I would love to introduce badminton into new clubs as well as

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN TRAINING LEADING UP TO THE 2012 OLYMPICS AND DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR FUTURE TRAININGS IN ANY OTHER COUNTRIES? I was training at the University of Bath with high performance training coach of Great Britain team as this is the place where I am doing my Masters in medical biosciences since last October. It is an Hosny amazing place to practice and study. I would love to stay here but I don't know yet whether I can stay more or not. I am looking forward for a PhD. HOW DO YOU DIVIDE YOUR TIME BETWEEN YOUR MASTER STUDIES AND TRAINING AS A BADMINTON PLAYER? I have been used to working hard since I was a child, and by time management, organization and good plans, everything is possible. DID THE PRODUCT GAVE YOU ADDED CONFIDENCE TO FACE-UP TO THE COMPETITION? Yes, definitely it does it gives me high endurance so automatically my confidence is more. AS A QNET IR, WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE, BOTH AS A BADMINTON PLAYER AND AS AN ENTREPRENEUR? My message is: enjoy your life, your sport, and your work. And do whatever you love not what people like and with great effort and dedication you will achieve your goals no matter how big they are. September 2012 |

Faces of Egypt

I

called my friend and found out that the owner is her brother! I could not miss such a project in our health issue! It is the perfect gift for our precious readers to announce that finally you will have a chance to enjoy a healthy meal without worrying about its short and long-term health effects. Tarek El Gammal, owner of NGS, started it in 2009 because he believed that everyone should lead a healthier way of living. He started his project in Hurghada where he lived and where there are many foreigners who care to adopt a healthy lifestyle through eating right. He implemented this concept to the Cairene market as well. “I opened a store and filled it with a variety of selected products; from dried and fresh fruits and vegetables, to natural cosmetics and whole grains and pulses,” El Gammal explains. “Besides just carrying our diverse line of products, we also offered a lot of information on the healing properties of the individual items and people were very receptive to our concept.”

TAREK EL GAMMAL OWNER OF “NGS-EG.COM”

THE FIRST ONLINE HEALTH STORE IN EGYPT BY: CAROLINE COUSSA

An SMS announcing the opening of the first online health store in Egypt was enough to drag my attention. Not only for the initiative, but because it came right on time to sweep out the disastrous quality of the food we eat. 34 |

| September 2012

I DECIDED TO CREATE AN ONLINE STORE, NGSEGYPT ,WHERE I OFFER THE HEALTHIEST PRODUCTS WITH THE HIGHEST QUALITY AVAILABLE ON THE MARKET. Tarek El Gammal

NGS provides healthy meat, chicken, fish and vegetables with no added chemicals and hormones. NGS carry wonderful meat, great salmon and lots of other, healthy proteins in their range. “People do not always have the time to come and visit the store, they were happy with the option to have their purchases delivered. It allowed me to cater to clients in El Gouna and Sahl Hashish as well, but it also created the need to design a platform for people to have access to all the information about the products and the possible health benefits they have,” he explains. So the logical step was to let the NGS evolve into an online business where people can browse through the products and learn about their benefits, place their orders and receive them at their homes at their convenience. Trying to find high quality products is not easy, and El Gammal refuses to compromise on what he sells through NGS. He says, “I realized that all the best quality products that are grown in Egypt are exported abroad, leaving us here with the lower grade produce. The next logical step was to create my own brands to make sure I can guarantee the level of quality that I want to offer my clients and eat myself.” NGS website offers a variety of healthy alternatives for things we eat every day and introduces products previously hard to find in Egypt. The NGS brand incorporates imported, all natural products of high quality that are grown and produced with a minimal use of chemicals. NGS also has a range of fresh produce that is locally grown with a minimal use of chemicals. Stay healthy and share it with your loved ones! September 2012 |

Home

YOUR HOME YOUR HEALTHY SANCTUARY One of the definitions of home is: “An environment offering security and happiness.” This means that in addition to providing coziness, relief, and relaxation, it gives a sense of safety and security. To have a home by that definition and qualities, we should make sure our homes are safe and healthy.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY

Poor indoor air quality (pollution) can bother your eyes, nose, and throat. It can also lead to chronic heart and lung problems and cancer. Air pollution in the home can come from tobacco smoke, gas-burning furnaces, gas-burning appliances, mold, and allergens. Home air pollution can be made worse by poor ventilation, high heat, and high humidity. 38 |

| September 2012

HEALTH & SAFETY TIPS: • Open your windows to ventilate your home on a regular basis. • Adopt a smoke-free home. • Vacuum carpets often to remove allergens that trigger asthma attacks and allergic reactions. • Hang carpets, sheets and blankets in the sun occasionally as it kills dust mites. • Properly ventilate rooms with high humidity, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and basements, to prevent moisture buildup and mold. • Have gas appliances professionally installed, vented outside, and checked annually for carbon monoxide leaks. Royal VKB Boomerang Wok Cozy Casa available on TheGiftery.com for LE 1,012.72

POISONING PREVENTION

Chemicals in and around the home can cause poisoning and long-term health effects. Poisoning can result from medicines, pesticides, household cleaning products, carbon monoxide and lead. The most common causes of poisoning among young children are cosmetics and personal care products, household cleaning products and pain relievers. Common causes among adults are pain relievers, prescription drugs, sedatives, cleaning products and antidepressants. Children can swallow detergents, bleaches and other cleaning products. Breathing fumes from these products can also harm people. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be caused by poorly vented gas furnaces and appliances. It can also be caused by gas generators used during electrical power outages and by indoor use of charcoal grills or portable stoves. Another source of poisoning is lead. Sources of lead in the home include lead-based paint, traditional home remedies, ceramics, toys and toy jewelry and lead water pipes.

HEALTH & SAFETY TIPS: • Make sure your child does not have access to peeling paint or chewable surfaces painted with lead-based paint. • Use and store chemicals, household cleaning products, and pesticides according to label instructions and out of reach of children. • Have gas appliances professionally installed, vented outside, and checked annually for carbon monoxide leaks. • Take all medicines as directed and store out of reach of children. • Turn on fans and open windows to help ventilate the area when using household cleaners and chemicals. >>

INJURY PREVENTION

Many unintentional injuries and deaths are related to the home and its environment. These include falls, fires, drowning and poisonings. But there’s no need to panic, in fact those incidents are preventable.

HEALTH & SAFETY TIPS: Prevent falls: • Install grab bars in showers and tubs. • Use nonslip mats in bathtubs and showers. • If you have stairs at home, install stair rails, keep stairs in good repair and keep them free of clutter. • Have good lighting. • Use safety gates in homes with young children. Prevent fire-related injuries: • Keep flammable objects away from the stove.

Prevent drowning: • Supervise young children in bathtubs. • If you have a swimming pool, always watch young children while they are swimming or playing in or around water.

5 SIMPLE MUST-HAVES FOR A HEALTHIER HOME

1

Shoe Rack. Have people remove their shoes before they enter your home. By having a shoeless household, dirt will not be tracked inside. This is especially important if you have young children who play on the floor.

2

Water Filters. Although water quality varies depending on where you live, tap water can contain a host of contaminants including chlorine, lead and organic material. Install filters in your kitchen for drinking water and in your shower for water used to bathe.

FOOD SAFETY

Not only do people get sick from food eaten at a café or restaurant, but they can also get sick from foods prepared in their home as a result of not being properly prepared or stored. For example, when meat and poultry are not fully cooked, bacteria can survive and make us sick. Illness can also occur when food eaten in the home has been contaminated in the field or factory.

HEALTH & SAFETY TIPS: • Wash your hands with soap and water before preparing food. • Wash produce and cutting boards often. • Separate raw meat, poultry, and seafood and their juices from ready-to-eat foods to prevent the spread of bacteria. • Use a food thermometer to cook meat and poultry to proper temperatures. • Wash hands, utensils, and cutting boards after they have been in contact with raw meat or poultry and before they touch another food. • Refrigerate food within 2 hours of serving.

3

Vacuum Cleaner. Vacuum regularly to keep dust and other allergens to a minimum. The best vacuums contain a High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter (HEPA) to remove dust particles.

4

Hardwood Floors and Area Rugs. Opt for hardwood floors and area rugs in place of wall-towall carpets. Carpets house dirt, chemicals, dust mites and mold. Area rugs have the benefit of being easily removed so they can be professionally cleaned, shaken out or placed in the sun. Also avoid synthetic rugs and look for natural floor coverings made of untreated wool, jute, sisal or bamboo.

5 Royal VKB Slowcooker Cozy Casa available on TheGiftery.com for LE 460

Healthy Bedding. You will spend almost a third of your life in bed, so make sure your bed is a healthy, chemical-free place to sleep. Next time you buy new bedding, look for organic, untreated cotton sheets, untreated wool pillows and a wool or latex mattress.

Remember: Your home should always be organized. Stress negatively affects our health and lack of organization and clutter can contribute to stress. Create a peaceful sanctuary at home by getting organized and eliminating clutter. September 2012 |

Fluid is leaking from my nipples, and I’m not pregnant; what’s the reason?

Is baby shampoo good for adult hair?

* Check with your doctor before taking any medication

Most shampoos contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which some people find dries out their scalp. Baby shampoo can be a smart alternative because it contains amphoteric surfactants, which are milder than SLS. The downside is that baby shampoo doesn’t clean as well as shampoo with SLS. So if you use a ton of styling products, you might have to wash your hair multiple times with baby shampoo to get it as clean as you would with one lather of an SLS-based product. But that’s not such a bad trade-off if your scalp is really parched.

It’s not unusual for weird-looking stuff to drip from the nipples. It can come in many colors; yellow, green, white, gray, red, and vary from thick and sticky to thin and watery. Non-pregnancy-related discharge can occur either spontaneously or from stimulation (e.g. squeezing or sucking) and is most often the result of a benign papilloma (a noncancerous tumor), an infection, or a drug side effect. In rare cases, leakage can signal a hormonal imbalance or even breast cancer, so you’d better consult your doctor.

Is it true that I have to see a dentist every six months?

I have the habit of latenight eating that has to stop; HELP!

Not necessarily. Your dentist will tell you how often you should come in for a dental check-up, and if you have very good oral health, this may be no more than once every two years. In order to maintain good oral health, brush twice a day, floss daily, rinse your mouth with an antibacterial rinse, chew sugar-free gum after meals, don’t smoke, eat a well-balanced diet of whole foods, and don’t overeat sugary foods.

Distract yourself; go for a walk, curl up with a good book, or relax in a hot bath. Satisfy your cravings with a low calorie alternative like herbal tea, a handful of veggies, or a piece of fruit. Increase the fiber in your diet, especially at dinner. Try adding beans or whole grains to keep you feeling full. Increase the protein in your dinner to keep hunger at bay. Limit all eating to the kitchen or dining room, and always eat

while sitting down at the table. This helps curb “eating amnesia,” that mindless munching in front of the television. Eat slowly and savor the taste of your food; give yourself 15 to 20 minutes for your brain to get the signal that you have had enough. Start your day with breakfast; people who skip breakfast are more likely to snack impulsively on calorie-laden foods. Drink plenty of water.

Can I lessen the intensity of the ringing I hear in my ears? In order to lessen the intensity of tinnitus, it is advisable to make every effort to: avoid exposure to loud sounds and noises, control blood pressure, decrease salt intake, avoid nerve stimulants; caffeine and nicotine, reduce anxiety, try to stop worrying about the ringing in your ears; the more you worry and concentrate on the noise, the louder it will become, get adequate rest and avoid fatigue, and exercise. Ringing in the ears is usually more bothersome when the surroundings are quiet, especially when you are in bed. A competing sound such as a ticking clock, a radio, a fan or white noise machine may help mask the noise you hear. Small hearing aid like devices which generate a competitive sound may help reduce the awareness of the ringing. Avoid aspirin or aspirin products in large quantities.

Little Health Tips Every Woman Should Know

Mulberry-Spring-Summer-2012

3

Keys To Happiness

•Get a pet! People with them tend to have better physical health, partly because you have to do active things to maintain them, walk the dog, play with the cat or clean a birdcage. Interacting with pets may also lower blood pressure, decrease anxiety and improve your mood. •Unplug and talk to someone face-toface. Facebook, and e-mail are all great ways to stay in touch, but actually seeing people and interacting with them is key for mental health. •Don’t be with someone who makes you miserable! When women say a relationship is a huge head-ache, there could be literal truth to that. Emotions can lead to very real pain. 50 |

3

Ways To Get The Most Out Of Your Doctor Visit

• Know what you want out of your next M.D. visit: a diagnosis, a referral to a specialist? Keep your focus and you’ll be more likely to get what you need. • Don’t be scared or embarrassed to talk to your doctor about anything. Unless you speak up, you’ll only continue to suffer. • Tell your doctor about any supplements you take. Some can have dangerous interactions with prescription drugs.

2

Health Reasons To Have Sex

• Get enough ‘vitamin O.’ Orgasms release hormones that boost emotional well-being and your immune system and may even prolong life. • Few things in life are fun, free and healthy, sex is one of them. Do it!

4

Things Healthy Women Do

• If you want to start a healthy habit, make your intention very concrete and specific, like, ‘put on sneakers as soon as I get home and walk 10 blocks’ instead of just ‘exercise more often.’ • Go to good health sites like familydoctor.org, WebMD and cdc.gov • Be future-focused. Most young women are pretty healthy, the problem isn’t their current situation, but where their lifestyle will lead them when they get older. Making changes now, like exercising more and eating better, is like putting money into a bank account. • Adopt a positive body image. If you think you look fat one day but were fine the day before, remember that your reaction to what you see in the mirror may be about emotions, not reality.

1

Way To Keep Your Brain Smart

Read something exciting, start a puzzle habit, exercise ‘use it or lose it’ rule applies to both physical and mental health.

Sleep Better: Here are the

3

Hows

• Set your alarm for the time you actually have to get up. Interrupting a sleep cycle to hit snooze will leave you groggy despite the ‘extra’ rest. • Keep things dark if you want a good night’s sleep. Leaving the TV or your reading light on lowers melatonin production, which, in turn, disrupts your sleep cycle. • Rid your bedroom of anything that distracts you from sleep or sex. More of both will help keep you healthy and happy.

4

Healthy Eating Habits

• Everything you eat should make you stronger, like whole grains for your heart or veggies for immunity. Make 85% of your choices this way and you’ll be healthier and thinner. • Switch from olive oil to canola oil for cooking. Canola has less saturated fat and a lot more omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to do everything from lifting mood to fighting heart disease. • Have a vegetable or fruit at every meal. • Eat global. Spices like cinnamon and turmeric in Indian and Thai cuisines add flavor and have health benefits, like fighting cancer. >> September 2012 |

3

Diet Tips

• Toss your diet books, just eat lots of multicolored foods that were recently alive, like vegetables and fruits. • Never crash diet. Research shows it can make you depressed. Nourishing your body also nourishes your mind. • Remember that every meal is not your last. There will be another turkey dinner, another plate of spaghetti, another brownie. If you keep in mind that this is not your last chance to eat a food you love, it will be easier for you to put down your fork when you’ve had enough.

1

Best Suggestion From Sex Health Experts

Don’t self-diagnose. If you have symptoms, check with a doctor, not the Internet.

2

Ways To Keep Your Mouth Healthy

• If you don’t floss, at least use an electric toothbrush to get into crannies and fight gum disease. • Rinse your mouth out after drinking a soda. Doing so will help wash its enamel-eroding acids off your teeth.

Health Treat for Your Feet

Go ahead, buy new shoes. Wear platforms so you get the height of a stiletto without the arch-busting 45-degree angle that puts so much pressure on the balls of your feet. And the wider heels provide much better support and stability than regular pumps.

2

Heart Health Tips

• Eat less salt. You may be a healthy young thing now, but half of women over 45 have high blood pressure, and a lot of that is due to sodium. • Every night before going to sleep, lie on your back and hang your head and shoulders off the bed for up to two minutes. This opens up your chest, increasing blood supply to your lungs and heart, and can help prevent bad posture from hours of hunching over a desk at work.

2

Ways To Slash Your Cancer Risk

• Know your family history of cancer. If parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts or uncles were diagnosed before 50, you may be at an especially high risk. • Aim for enough vitamin D a day. Vitamin D is not only important for bones, but may also help prevent cancer and heart disease.

2

Ways To Reduce Your Risk Of Skin Cancer

• Do a skin check once a month when you’re getting out of the shower. While you put on your moisturizer, look for any striking, dark or changing spots or moles. • Wear a hat when you’re in the sun. Wearing sun block on your face and body and assuming your scalp is fine may turn out to cancer.

More Reason To Stop Smoking: Fertility

Smoking is a killer for your fertility. Women who smoke lose their eggs faster than women who don’t.

3

Easy Exercise Advice

• Lose unhealthy extra weight now. It’ll be much easier to do it in your twenties and thirties than later, when metabolism slows down. • Try the elevator diet! Any activity helps your heart and waistline. • Consider exercise an everyday thing, like brushing your teeth. It’s the best thing you can do for your whole body.

2

• Get happy. In one study, positive people injected with the cold virus were less likely to get sick than their less happy peers. Happier types live longer too. • Help someone. You can exercise like a maniac and still not feel truly healthy and alive. But stepping beyond yourself makes you realize that you’re part of something bigger and more profound. My experience and research show that it leads to better health. • Make sure your needs count. As a woman, you have a breathtaking ability to care for others, but don’t relinquish your own health.

Ways To Boost Your Immune System

• If you’re truly sick, don’t go to work! You’ll just prolong your own illness. • Wash your hands. Period. September 2012 |

USE THIS, NOT THAT! Healthy Versions Of Everything!

Natural Do-It-Yourself Beauty Substitutions

1. Face Cleanser: The cleanser is the foundation of all beauty routines that keeps us clean and clear. In an effort to manufacture products cheaper and have a longer shelf life, many cleansers contain all kinds of harsh chemicals like BHA, PEG, parabens, salicylic acid, and triclosan. Consider swapping out your conventional face wash for safer chemical-free cleansers or simply dab a cotton ball with lemon juice or apple cider vinegar and massage gently over your face; it’s a very good natural cleanser to eliminate dirt and oil. 54 |

| September 2012

2. Face & Body Moisturizer: Moisturizers are vital to keep our skin soft, happy and balanced. One wonders then why so many contain all kinds of eyebrow raising ingredients like hydroquinone, triethanolamine, DMDM hydantoin, fragrance, and alumina. Keep yourself healthy and hydrated by applying a little jojoba or coconut oil to your face and body after showering; these oils are light, absorbed fast and won’t clog your pores.

3. Eye Makeup Remover: While working great to remove waterproof mascara after a long day of work or a late night partying, most conventional pads or gel eye makeup removers are full of synthetic chemicals like benzyl alcohol, propylene glycol, and tetrasodium EDTA. Next time put a few drops of coconut or olive oil on a cotton ball and smooth over closed eyes to clean them without irritation.

4. Cuticle Softener: Hydrated cuticles are important for healthy hands and nails. Unfortunately, many cuticle creams and gels contain stuff like linalool, limonene, propylparaben, and ethanol. You can achieve soft cuticles naturally by simply placing your fingers in a bowl of warm olive oil for a few minutes a few times a week.

5. Eye Cream: Hydrating the delicate skin around the eyes is important to prevent fine lines, wrinkles and dark circles. It’s a shame that so many anti-age eye creams and serums are made with harmful ingredients like coumarin, oxybenzone, PEG, and methylparaben. Try swapping the expensive creams for sweet almond or argan oil, just massage a little around the eyes each night before bed.

Synthetic Ingredients To Watch Out For!

of personal care products that foam. Think shampoo and dish detergent. Health threats range from toxic contaminants and harming the skin’s immune system to eye damage, depression, severe skin irritation and even death in animals exposed to SLS.

Polyethylene Glycol (PEG & PPG): When made from synthetic chemicals, PEG and PPG can cause hives and eczema because of their toxic chemistry. You can find PEGs listed on many baby and personal care items, plus sunscreens. Coal Tar: Even though this is a known carcinogen, coal tar is still used in dandruff shampoo and hair dyes, especially dark, permanent hair dye. Coal tar causes lung, kidney and skin cancer. Check out alternatives made without coal tar or choose the purity of henna, a botanical hair colorant. Dioxin: This is the king of bad, but it won’t appear on any product ingredient list. Rather, dioxin is found in antibacterials like polyethylene glycol (PEG), emulsifiers, and cleansers like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Dioxin is known to cause cancer, nervous system disorders, miscarriages and birth defects. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLEA): Often derived from petroleum, these harsh detergents are found in 90%

FD&C Color Pigments: Also made from coal tar, these synthetic colors contain heavy metal salts, and they deposit toxins in the skin. Animal studies show that almost all are carcinogenic. Sunscreen Chemicals: These toxic chemicals; avobenzone, benzphenone, ethoxycinnamate, and PABA are commonly used in the majority of sunscreens. Believed to damage DNA, they can lead to cancer and are known to generate free radicals. >> September 2012 |

Do This, Not That At The Gym ! Lift This: Free weights Not That: The Smith Machine The Smith machine looks like a squat rack with a built-in bar that runs on guides, gives you all the benefits of squats, but none of the risk that comes from holding a heavy barbell across your back. That’s because the bar can easily be secured at any point during the movement. The truth: Because the bar runs on guides, you can only move straight up and down as you squat, instead of down and back, as you would in a free-weight squat. The result: An unnatural movement that puts extra stress on your knees and lower back. Need another reason to skip the Smith? Canadian researchers found that traditional squats produced almost 50% more muscle activity in the quadriceps than squats done on a Smith machine. The alternative: If you’re not comfortable with barbell squats, simply do the exercise while holding dumbbells at arm’s length next to your sides. You won’t need a spotter, and your body will be free to move through the natural motion of the squat.

Use This: Bench press Not That: Swiss ball Don’t abandon your trusty bench for exercises like the chest press and shoulder press if your goal is strength and size. The reason people are using the ball and getting gains is because they’re weak as kittens to begin with. You have to reduce the weight in order to press on a Swiss ball, and this means you get less out of the exercise. A Swiss ball is great for variety, but center your chest and shoulder routines on exercises that are performed on a stable surface. Then use the ball to work your abs.

Sprint This: High-intensity intervals Not That: A moderately hard, steady pace You can achieve more progress in a mere 15 minutes of interval training (done three times a week) than that guy grinding away on the treadmill for an hour. An intelligent man draws maximum benefit from a minimum time investment, and smarts are sexy. So are abs, a benefit of this training style. Researchers at Australia’s University of New South Wales found that intervals burn three times as much fat as running twice as long at a moderately hard, steady pace. But interval training’s benefits don’t end with heart health, fat incineration, or the preservation of that most precious of commodities, your time. Most sports worth playing involve stopping and starting, not running at one pace, so you’ll rule on the court or field. What’s more, your muscles will learn to contract more forcefully. Ultimately you’ll live longer, too, because intervals elevate the good cholesterol that makes your arteries whooshing streams and not plaque-strewn rapids. 56 |

Cook This, Not That! Cook This: Cauliflower Not That: Mashed potatoes

Cook This: Spaghetti squash Not That: Spaghetti

Steam some fresh or frozen cauliflower in the microwave. Then spray the cauliflower with butter substitute, add a little nonfat half-and-half substitute, and puree in a food processor or blender. Salt and pepper to taste and you’ve got something that quite honestly can compete with the real thing any day. To make it even better, try adding roasted garlic, cheese, or sour cream to the mixture. You’ll eliminate 30g carbohydrates per cup. The taste? After a couple of bites, you forget it’s not potatoes.

A cooked spaghetti squash is like Mother Nature’s automatic spaghetti maker, the flesh becomes noodle like strands. All you have to do is cut the squash in half and remove the seeds. Then place each half (cut side down) on a plate with a quarter cup of water. Nuke the squash for 10 minutes or until it’s soft to the touch. Let it cool, then scrape out the “spaghetti” strands and top with pasta sauce and cheese. You’ll eliminate 30g carbohydrates per cup. The taste? Great. Spaghetti squash has exactly the same consistency as real pasta.

Cook This: Portobello mushrooms Not That: Pizza crust Cut the gills out of the inside of the mushroom, then place the mushroom on an oiled cookie sheet and bake for 5 to 10 minutes so it dries out slightly. Add tomato sauce, mozzarella, and pepperoni or other toppings and broil until the cheese begins to melt. You’ll eliminate about 20g carbohydrates per slice. The taste? Like pizza, but moister.

Banish Baggies & Go Green

e use so many plastic bags, plastic bottles, etc in our homes, work, and daily life matters. So consider purchasing reusable/recycled bags, greeting cards, eco-friendly products that are safe and environment friendly, plus; they are definitely cheaper! Also, separate your trash into sections: food waste, plastic, and glass. Be an eco-friendly person! Love nature, it will love you back! Thumbs up to Makani for being an optimum example for an eco-friendly restaurant.

Recycle This: A common breakfast item, plastic yogurt containers are recyclable and do not need to be rinsed out before discarding into receptacles. Similarly, plastic plates and cutlery used at special events are also recyclable.

Recycle This: Among the most recognizable recyclables are plastic cups, lids, straws, aluminum cans and glass bottles.

Not That: Unlike plastics that can be easily cleaned

Not That: When it comes to cases of mistaken identity, the biggest offender placed in recycling bins that is in fact not recyclable is the paper cup. Paper cups, like the coffee cup, are coated with a thin wax to keep liquids from seeping through the paper fibers, making it unrecyclable. Consider limiting your environmental impact by bringing a reusable mug when purchasing hot beverages. >>

as part of the recycling process, paper that is saturated with food or oils, such as pizza boxes and used napkins can’t be recycled because the contaminants destroy the fibers. Paper fibers need to be relatively dry in order to be recreated into post-consumer products. All is not lost on the pizza box though; sections saturated by cheese or grease can be cut and the remaining dry and undamaged pieces can be recycled.

Natural Vs Artificial Taking a Walk Vs Treadmill Working out on a treadmill can get boring quickly, particularly if you repeat the same workout routine day after day. The scenery does not change, which affects the psychological satisfaction that comes from running in new locations. Running on treadmills does not exactly mimic outside natural running. Treadmill users do not experience the same wind resistance experienced as runners who train outside. Wind resistance increases your workload between 2 and 10%, depending on how fast you are running. Some treadmill runners tend to spend more time on their support leg compared to running outside. This decreases their efficiency. The posture of some runners also changes. When on a treadmill, some runners appear to lean forward slightly less than when running outside. This causes them to waste some of their energy on an up and down motion, rather than focusing on forward momentum.

Natural Childbirth Vs C-section Natural childbirth makes the mother feel more in touch with the birth experience and deal with labor in a proactive manner. Mom may have a more positive birth experience or feel empowered by having natural childbirth. Some women compare natural childbirth with running a marathon. The sense of accomplishment can be a rewarding event. Moreover, mom can get up and walk around shortly after birth.

Protein Shakes Vs Energy Drinks Energy drinks contain about a half-cup of sugar, excessive levels of caffeine, unidentified stimulants, red food dye, taurine, and other health-harming ingredients. Energy drinks can cause serious health problems, such as increased blood pressure, stomach problems, panic attacks, anxiety, and cardiac arrhythmias. They can even cause tooth erosion. There are 3 natural alternatives to energy drinks; get enough protein from your food or protein shakes, aim for 7-8 hours sleep each night, and drink water a lot.

There is another, greater benefit to all this: You’ll help the world be a healthier, safer and greener place by keeping risky chemicals out of the environment whenever you choose products free of harmful chemicals; a definite win/win for everyone! On top of all YOU! September 2012 |

SWIMMING YOURSELF BEAUTIFUL! BY: NATASCIA PAOLUCCI

Exercising can seem like a chore sometimes, especially when it is so hot and when you are busy. Water-based exercises is an efficient and refreshing alternative to the traditional gym session. Polled swimming pool users have reported that contact with the water made working out more pleasant. Associated with holiday, good weather and recreational activities, it could encourage the more reluctant to engage in physical workout. Moreover, the change in environment provides a good break in the day for people who get easily bored or who need to cut out from a day at work. 62 |

| September 2012

BENEFITS ARE NUMEROUS AND CENTERED AROUND ACCESSIBILITY

HERE IS A SAMPLE OF ACTIVITIES YOU SHOULD TRY:

Water, because of its nature and properties, is one of the safest ways to exercise. For the elderly, it improves quality of life and decreases disability through gentle resistence training but constant bodyweight support provided by buoyancy. For similar reasons, I strongly recommend water-based workouts to pregnant women, as water is a low impact activity that limits the risk of falls. Also, the injured should be able to regain bone and muscle strength in the water, with the advice of their medical practitioner.

Slow paced endurance activity. Particularly recommended to recovering athletes in order not to lose fitness and to those who follow a weight loss program for it should raise the heart rate to the fat burning zone.

But more than offering limited risk workout, water-based workouts can improve health. For instance, it has been shown that post-menopausal women who swam and maintained bone health. People with chronic diseases can also find help in water. Hydrotherapy shows more results in the cure of rheumatoid arthritis than any other activity. Similarly, water improves the use of joints and decreases pain from osteoarthritis.

Length Swimming

Speed Swimming Also called "whoever gets to the other side last is a rotten egg." Yes, racing, which we have practiced over and over again when we were kids. The competition is also a great way to burn calories. Indeed, as heart rate increases, you practice some serious cardiovascular activity. >>

Benefits are not only limited to physical health. Indeed, interesting studies have been conducted to prove that water-based exercise improves mental health as well! In both men and women, swimming improved mood. More specifically, for people with fibromyalgia, it decreeases anxiety. Warm water can even decrease depression. It has also been noted that recreational water-based activities improve family connections, which makes it a great choice for cross generational bonding or conflict solving. September 2012 |

BOTH LAST ACTIVITIES DEPEND ON DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES, HERE IS A LIST ACCOMPANIED WITH RESPECTIVE CALORIE BURNT FOR ONE HOUR OF: [depending on the person's weight Kcal: #1) 130 pounds, #2) 155 pounds, #3) 185 pounds, #4) 205 pounds] • Swimming backstroke: 413- 493572- 651 • Swimming breaststroke: 590704- 817- 931 • Swimming butterfly: 649- 774899- 1024 • Swimming laps, freestyle, fast: 590- 704- 817- 931 • Swimming laps, freestyle, slow: 413- 493- 572- 651 • Swimming leisurely, not laps: 64 |

Diving The adrenaline rush. From any height, from the pool side up to 10 meters in the air, it refers to the techniques of cutting into the water with style. We have all watched as the Olympians executed triple backward flips before hitting the water in a splash-less ring water. The ultimate feeling of weightlessness during the fall couples with the creativity of designing an unforgettable dive.

Organize competitions among your friends!

Synchronized Swimming Gracious and technical but offers a wonderful show. As many may have seen on the Olympic games, teams of swimmers perform dance moves in the water in adapted choreographies. Good swimming skills required. Perfect for dancers who look for some variety or anyone who wants to experience total control of one's body while performing moves that remain impossible to execute out of the water.

Water Polo A competitive, fast-paced, teamspirited activity. It gathers two teams

who should guard their respective goals while trying to pass a hand held ball between the other team's posts. It requires good swimming skills, a certain endurance and relatively good hand eye coordination. Although rough contact is not accepted, it is an inherent part of the game and you should not engage if you are vulnerable to shocks. Anyway, a great way to share some time with friends.

Aquagym My personal favorite! It is both a complete work-out and adaptable. It uses the resistance of water to tone muscles and buoyancy to add difficulty to the move.

This is how beginners and advanced practitioners can all participate in a same class. While the move is the same, as participants get more confident, they should get deeper in the water to keep the activity challenging. Moves are relatively similar to the ones taught in traditional gym classes, such as jumping jacks, sidekicks and so forth, and can be complemented with accessories such as fins for variety.

Now fetch that great swimsuit you bought for the season and flaunt it while you enjoy healthy fitness activity! Pictures taken at the Aquagym classes, Katameya Heights. Aquagym classes are available every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 am for members and non-members.

Must-Have Ingredients to Boost Your Mood

Magnesium

Calcium

Magnesium is a mineral that eases your mind, nerves, and muscles. It’s even been used to treat clinical depression. It protects your brain from the waste product ammonia, relaxes blood vessels, and protects against heart disease and diabetes. Increasing magnesium levels in the brain improves memory and learning, while a deficiency can lead to depression, anxiety, insomnia, and fatigue. Best Sources: Green leaves, whole grains, salmon, beans, sunflower seeds and molasses.

Disturbances in calcium levels can produce anxiety, depression, irritability, impaired memory, and slow thinking. When calcium levels are low in your bloodstream, the nutrient is leached from your bones to make up for the inadequacy, which is what leads to osteoporosis. A constant deficiency creates a hormonal imbalance that causes weight gain and women to suffer severe PMS symptoms. Best Sources: Sardines, milk, yogurt, cheese, kale, cabbage, mustard, turnip greens including spinach; almonds, pecans and walnuts.

Vitamin B12 Certain bacteria that live in the guts of animals are the only organisms that make B12. As such, these animals accumulate the nutrient in their tissues, and you’ll find high concentrations in cows, goats, and other ruminant animals and in seafood such as fish and shellfish. B12 regulates the expression of genes, meaning it prevents things like cancer from happening. Best Sources: Shellfish, fish, liver, beef and eggs. 68 |

| September 2012

Vitamin E In studies of the elderly, those who eat a variety of tocopherols from food show a significant decrease in both cognitive decline and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. And patients with clinical depression have significantly lower vitamin E levels. Natural forms of vitamin E are also linked to the prevention of cancer and protection from heart disease. Synthetic alpha-tocopherol has been linked to cancer and heart disease, while the complex arrangement of natural forms prevent these diseases. Best Sources: Almonds, olives, beet greens and turnip greens.

Vitamin D

Cholesterol

There’s a reason why the sun feels so good on our skin, just like plants, we need it for survival. Sunshine converts cholesterol in our skin into vitamin D, an essential nutrient that controls the expression of some two thousand genes. Low levels of vitamin D are linked to a host of mental disorders, including depression, Parkinson’s disease, and seventeen types of cancer. Vitamin D deficiency is also linked to lowered immunity. Some researchers believe that one reason we get sick in the winter months is because we get less sun exposure and therefore less vitamin D. A low vitamin D level increases both the risk of getting depressed and the severity of depression in the elderly. Best Sources: Sunlight, fatty fish, butter and mushrooms.

Eating cholesterol in your diet has a very small impact on your blood cholesterol levels and avoiding high cholesterol foods, like eggs and salmon, means you’re missing out on some of the richest sources of essential brain nutrients. With so much emphasis on lowering cholesterol, you might be surprised to hear that high levels of cholesterol have been linked to better memory and mood in healthy middle-aged and elderly people. Perhaps even more surprising is to learn that as people get older, higher levels of total cholesterol are associated with a decreased risk of dementia, according to researchers from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. Best Sources: Eggs, salmon, meat, milk and cheese.

Iron Iron is needed for brain cells to produce energy and is particularly important for proper brain development. Teenagers with low iron levels perform worse on cognitive tests, and infants with iron deficiency have learning and concentration problems later in life. As the center of the protein hemoglobin, iron is our body’s basis for transporting oxygen. All this iron makes your blood red -just like the red planet Mars. Iron also is the core of important proteins in the body that form the cytochrome system in our liver that rids our body of toxins. Detox diets that promote fasting or juice? Foods high in iron, like shellfish and beef are a better bet. Best Sources: Shellfish, grass-fed beef, duck, dark chicken meat and liver.

Folate Folate keeps your neurotransmitter factories humming. The cerebrospinal fluid that bathes your brain has four times more folate than does your blood. Higher concentrations of folate in the blood are linked to a decrease in negative mood states, clinical depression, and fuzzy thinking. Folic acid has been used for decades to treat clinical depression. Folate also improves mood by boosting the production of the long-chain omega-3s, helping create compounds like defensin-1 that protect the brain from inflammation. Best Sources: Spinach, kale, black beans, blackeyed peas and lentils.

Iodine

Vitamin A

Iodine is a nutrient that all animals need for life, and it can be obtained only through diet. Iodine is essential for a healthy thyroid, the gland that regulates metabolism. An underactive thyroid is associated with low energy, poor memory, depression, migraine, weight gain, infertility, breast disease (including cancer), and heart disease. Best Sources: Seaweed, fish, clams, shrimp, sardines, eggs, grass-fed meat and milk and potato skin.

Vitamin A in its usable form is found in animal fats. The hippocampus, is loaded with receptors for vitamin A. This nutrient plays a role in expression of DNA in neurons and promotes the production of the enzymes that make neurotransmitters like dopamine and their receptors, the key players in the basic biochemistry of mood, memory, and learning. Best Sources: Liver, egg yolks, shellfish, butter, and milk.>> September 2012 |

Omega-3s

Fiber

Omega-3s are a group of essential fatty acids required by every cell in the human body. These special fats came to the attention of scientists in the 1970s when they noticed that populations of Eskimos who ate a high-fat diet had no heart disease. Diets high in omega-3s are known to prevent depression, obesity, cancer, heart disease, and many, many other ailments. Humans use them to form complex thoughts and build hearts that can beat billions of times without stopping. If you want to think fast or run quickly, you want a diet rich in these crucial fats. Best Sources: Fatty fish like sardines, mackerel and salmon, eggs, and grass-fed meat.

Diets low in fiber have been linked to depression and increased risk of suicide. One reason is that fiber is an indicator you are eating foods like whole grains and plants that contain the other essential elements of happiness. Another is that fiber reduces overall inflammation. Fiber helps you avoid spikes in blood sugar and insulin, which over time cause a deterioration of the blood-brain barrier that keeps toxins out of the brain, so they can’t disrupt mood regulation, memory, and brain growth. Boosting the fiber in your diet is as easy as following one simple rule: Eat more plants. Don’t rely on processed foods with fancy food claims for this essential element. Best Sources: Green leafy vegetables, cruciferous plants like cauliflower and broccoli, beans and fruit.

Here Are 5 Foods Bound To Put A Smile On Your Dial! Cottage cheese: If you’re suffering with some serious PMS, try a snack of cottage cheese on rice cakes for a tryptophan-loaded mood lift. Due to the boost in serotonin, tryptophan has been found to reduce aggression in women during the premenstrual phase. It also appears to reduce mood swings, tension, and irritability. Spinach: High levels of magnesium mean this super-food will also help ward off feelings of anxiety, fatigue and depression. It works by protecting the brain from ammonia and relaxing the blood vessels. Popeye was on to something! Lobster: Shellfish are packed with high levels of vitamin B12, essential for beating feelings of aggression, sleeplessness or obsessive-compulsive behavior. Low levels of B12 can increase your risk of mental health problems like dementia and depression. Bananas: Another food rich in tryptophan, bananas are great fuel before your workout. The high potassium levels can prevent cramping and carbohydrates boost energy. Other fruits with high tryptophan include pineapple, kiwi fruit, plums and plantain. Chocolate: Just a few squares can boost endorphin levels. A study by John Hopkins University in the US found that the sugar and fat content in chocolate has a positive effect on mood. Aim for 40g of dark chocolate per day for a natural high.

Example Of A Mood-Inducing Meal Plan! Breakfast: • Banana porridge made with milk • Poached egg with spinach • Mixed fruit with yoghurt • Smoked salmon on rye bread Lunch: • Baked sweet potato with cottage cheese and tuna • Quinoa, bean and avocado salad with fresh herbs • Vegetable stir fry • Spinach or asparagus soup Dinner: • Steamed fish with salad and sweet potato • Vegetable and quinoa • Chicken and bean casserole • Mushroom and quinoa risotto • Snacks • Bean hummus • Oat cakes with tahini paste or hazelnut butter • Fruit smoothie with milk

Eat Wild Salmon and Shrimp! Why? Because populations that eat the most fish have the lowest rates of depression, bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, and seasonal affective disorder (the winter blues). Eating omega-3s has also been shown to alleviate the symptoms of depression in more than 60% of pregnant women. Eat Cherry Tomatoes! Why? It contains lycopene, a compound that makes tomatoes red, helps maintain mood by preventing the formation of pro-inflammatory compounds, that are associated with depression. Eat Chile Peppers! Why? These fruits are made spicy by the fat-soluble molecule called capsaicin, our brains respond to the heat of capsaicin by releasing endorphins, natural compounds that are related to morphine and have a calming effect. Eat Beets! Why? Beets are one of the best sources of the B vitamin folate that is crucial for good mood, memory retrieval, processing speed, and lightning reflexes. Beets are also packed with betaine, which our brain uses as a natural antidepressant. Eat Garlic! Why? Garlic is the star of a family of vegetables known as alliums that include onions, garlic, and leeks. Alliums promote healthy arteries and ensure proper blood flow to the brain. These savory vegetables relax your blood vessels, decreasing your blood pressure, which prevents small strokes in the brain, a major cause of depression and dementia later in life.

Eating is always a decision, nobody forces your hand to pick up food and put it into your mouth. Albert Ellis

SMART WAYS TO KEEP OFF

Your Lost Weight Congratulations! You have reached your desired weight but how do you maintain that new figure? Whether you were counting calories or sticking to a low-fat diet, it’s now time to switch from weight loss to weight control plan. How can you maintain your healthier, slimmer body? To lose weight permanently, you must make a commitment to gradually adopt a healthier way of life. Don’t fall back on those unhealthy eating habits you had before you lost weight. Controlling your weight is not an impossible task. Balancing what you eat with how much you exercise will help you maintain your new weight.

The Strategies Of Keeping Off The Lost Weight Scan and plan. Each morning, review your eating plan. Think ahead to what food challenges you might encounter during the day, and get your defenses ready even before you crawl out of bed. Preparedness is the best defense when it comes to fighting fat.

Weight control, why is it so hard? Your brain has a very accurate system of knowing how many fat cells you have, and even how fat those fat cells are. When you’re dieting, the brain knows the body’s fat cells are decreasing and it wants to get them back, even after you’ve reached your goal weight. The brain has a number of ways it tries to regain its fat cells. One is to slow the body’s metabolism so it can hang on to fat more easily. Another is to make you think about food more. Your brain is constantly telling you, “eat, eat, eat.” It will also deny that you are regaining weight, even if your clothes are getting tight. You need reliable ways to counteract these messages.

Weight Control: It’s a Lifestyle Remind yourself that eating well and being active are lifelong methods of keeping yourself healthy by lowering your risk of serious disorders like heart disease, diabetes, stroke, certain cancers, and other health problems. The healthy habits you learned while dieting shouldn’t disappear once you’ve lost weight. You can eat a little bit more, of course, but don’t stop living that active, healthy lifestyle. 72 |

Do not skip meals. Skipping meals can slow your metabolism down. Skipping meals can also cause overeating later in the day. Eat breakfast. The National Weight Control Registry, which tracks more than 3,000 Americans who have achieved a weight loss of around 60 pounds and kept it off for about six years, found that eating breakfast is an important factor in keeping off weight. Eating a healthy breakfast makes it less likely that you’ll overeat during the day. Weigh yourself once a week. Monitoring your weight will help you stop weight gain from occurring by creating the awareness. You may not always feel a difference in how your clothes fit. To ensure you are eating healthy, keep an accurate food journal. Write down everything you eat or drink. Be honest and accurate, otherwise the journal is not as helpful. The food journal will help you realize when higher calorie foods are being included more frequently than they should. Recording when you exercise (and how long) will also help you to look at trends. Are you gaining weight because you are eating the same but stopped exercising?

Get plenty of exercise. It is a very important way to keep the weight off. Studies show that people who have dieted and successfully maintained their ideal weight exercise around five hours a week. To maintain a weight loss, people should exercise at least 30 minutes a day on most days of the week and do strength training twice a week. You can split your exercise sessions into segments, for example doing two 30-minute workouts on a day that you’ve planned an hour of exercise. In fact, this can have a better effect on your muscle metabolism. Exercise is a dieter’s best friend. It not only burns calories, but can actually improve your resting metabolism. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or park in the back of the parking lot. Stay motivated. We all need to constantly challenge ourselves to stay motivated. Give yourself a goal like a special date, a party, or other social event to help you maintain your weight loss. Rewarding yourself is another good motivator. Any kind of reward is good, other than food, of course. Buy some new clothes, a CD, a fitness gadget, whatever motivates you to stick with your program. Some people even take a trip as a reward. Stay accountable. Find other people who are trying to keep their weight off. By sharing tips, success stories, and struggles, you’ll find it easier to maintain good nutritional and exercise habits. Picture yourself. Keep a picture of yourself on your refrigerator door at both your original and current weight. Or hang photos of women who inspire you. Either way, every time you reach for a bite, you’ll see a reminder of why you should stick with healthy foods. Remind yourself. Food is stalking you? Start carrying a reminder of why you are making healthy food choices. Some dieters like to wear a pin, others like to keep a picture of themselves or an inspiring quote in their wallets. Whatever you choose, make it significant to you. Commit. If you start a diet, make it for good. Eating healthy foods only until you hit your target weight doesn’t do much for your weight or health in the long run. Getting healthy is a lifestyle choice that has to last. Take a Break. Not a break from your diet, a break from eating. It’s important to have parts of the day when you immerse yourself in non-eating activities.

The hormones that work to break down fat and glycogen stored in sugar need you to let them alone to do their job. That means not eating for an hour or two. Plus, the break might just give you time to finish that dusty novel on your bookshelf. Focus on why you like being slim. Jot down why it’s so worth it to you to keep up your eating and exercise plans. Get proper sleep. Get proper sleep. People with improper sleep have a much higher risk of obesity. Exhaustion can make you feel hungrier, and impair your judgment. Aim for around 8 hours of good sleep a night. Cook your own meals. Cooking meals at home allows you to control both portion size and what goes in to the food. Restaurant and packaged foods generally contain a lot more sodium, fat, and calories than food cooked at home, plus the portion sizes tend to be larger. Make sure to shop when you are not hungry. Create a shopping list to stick to, and store tempting foods in cabinets or drawers out of your sight. Eat early, eat often. Starting your day with a healthy breakfast can jumpstart your metabolism. And it will help to keep you from binging later in the day. Likewise, grazing on healthful snacks like fruits, veggies and protein-packed almonds, and eating six small, healthful meals throughout the day, rather than the standard three large ones, can help keep your metabolism going and ward off snack attacks.

Tip: The Diet Sabotager Soft drinks are the single biggest source of calories in any diet, providing about 7 percent of calories. One can of soda pop contains between 10-12 teaspoons of sugar and around 150 calories, so a few soft drinks can quickly add up to a good portion of your daily calorie intake. Cutting out soft drinks may be an easy way to help you lose some extra weight. Try switching to water with lemon, unsweetened iced tea, or an occasional spritzer made with a touch of juice (juice contains a lot of calories, so use just a taste) and carbonated water. FOOD Vs  . FOOD ALLERGY INTOLERANCE Many of us often say, “I can’t eat chocolate, I’m allergic to it,” others might say, “I love strawberries, I don’t eat them though, I’m allergic,” the question is: Are these statements accurate? Food reactions are common, but most are caused by a food intolerance rather than a food allergy. A food intolerance can cause some of the same signs and symptoms as a food allergy, so people often confuse the two. Although some symptoms of food allergy and food intolerance can be very similar, there are ways to tell the difference.

WHAT IS A FOOD ALLERGY?

WHAT IS FOOD INTOLERANCE?

A food allergy is an immune system response. It occurs when the body mistakes an ingredient in food, usually a protein, as harmful and creates a defense system (antibodies) to fight it. Food allergy symptoms develop when the antibodies are battling the “invading” food. The most common food allergies are peanuts, tree nuts (such as walnuts, pecans and almonds), fish, shellfish, milk, eggs, soy products and wheat.

Food intolerance is a digestive system response rather than an immune system response. It occurs when something in a food irritates a person's digestive system or when a person is unable to properly digest or breakdown the food. Intolerance to lactose, which is found in milk and other dairy products, is the most common food intolerance. Other food intolerances include wheat, peanuts and tree nuts.

SYMPTOMS

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of a food allergy can range from mild to severe, and the amount of food necessary to trigger a reaction varies from person to person. Symptoms may include: Rash or hives, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, itchy skin, shortness of breath, chest pain, swelling of the airways to the lungs, or anaphylaxis (serious allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and may cause death, symptoms include an itchy rash, throat swelling, and low blood pressure).

Nausea, stomach pain, gas, cramps, or bloating, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea, headaches, irritability or nervousness.

CAUSES OF FOOD ALLERGIES

CAUSES OF FOOD INTOLERANCE

Food allergies arise from sensitivity to chemical compounds (proteins) in food. They develop after you are exposed to a food protein that your body thinks is harmful. The first time you eat the food containing the protein, your immune system responds by creating specific diseasefighting antibodies (called immunoglobulin E or IgE). When you eat the food again, it triggers the release of IgE antibodies and other chemicals, including histamine, in an effort to expel the protein “invader” from your body. Histamine is a powerful chemical that can affect the respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, skin, or cardiovascular system. As a result of this response, food allergy symptoms occur. The allergy symptoms you have depend on where in the body the histamine is released. If it is released in the ears, nose, and throat, you may have an itchy nose and mouth, or trouble breathing or swallowing. If histamine is released in the skin, you may develop hives or a rash. If histamine is released in the gastrointestinal tract, you likely will develop stomach pains, cramps, vomiting or diarrhea. Many people experience a combination of symptoms as the food is eaten and digested. Food allergies often run in families, suggesting that the condition can be inherited.

There are many factors that may contribute to food intolerance. In some cases, as with lactose intolerance, the person lacks the chemicals, called enzymes, necessary to properly digest certain proteins found in food. Also common are intolerances to some chemical ingredients added to food to provide color, enhance taste, and protect against the growth of bacteria. These ingredients include various dyes and monosodium glutamate (MSG), a flavor enhancer. Substances called sulfites are also a source of intolerance for some people. They may occur naturally, as in red wines or may be added to prevent the growth of mold. Salicylates are a group of plant chemicals found naturally in many fruits, vegetables, nuts, coffee, juices, beer, and wine. Aspirin also is a compound of the salicylate family. Foods containing salicylates may trigger allergy symptoms in people who are sensitive to aspirin. Of course, any food consumed in excessive quantities can cause digestive symptoms.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FOOD INTOLERANCE AND FOOD ALLERGY? A true food allergy causes an immune system reaction that affects numerous organs in the body. It can cause a range of symptoms. In some cases, an allergic food reaction can be severe or life-threatening. In contrast, food intolerance symptoms are generally less serious and are limited to digestive problems. If you have a food allergy, even a tiny amount of the offending food can cause an immediate, severe reaction. Digestive signs and symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, cramping and diarrhea. Other signs and symptoms can include a tingling mouth, hives, and swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat. A life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis can cause breathing trouble and dangerously low blood pressure. There are no known cures for food allergy, so the only thing you can do is manage the condition. The best way to do that is to entirely avoid the foods to which you are allergic. This may not be as easy as it sounds, because sometimes things you are allergic to are ingredients in other products. So it's very important to check labels. Food intolerance symptoms generally come on gradually and don't involve an immune system reaction. If you have a food intolerance, you may be able to eat small amounts of the offending food without trouble. You may also be able to take steps that help prevent a reaction. For example, if you have lactose intolerance, you may be able to drink lactose-free milk or take lactase enzyme pills that aid digestion. Another difference is that someone who is allergic to a substance, such as food, will typically react to it in a very short time, whereas someone with an intolerance can react hours later. Love & Relationships

WAYS TO MAKE HIM LAST LONGER IN BED

A

good sex life takes time and effort to maintain. It won’t always be easy, our busy lives are taxing and often leave us tired and devoid of the imagination and motivation required to keep up the pace. Having good sex doesn’t necessarily mean spending hours and hours, it can be as simple as doing something a little different just for a change.

Know that premature ejaculation can very easily be cured; it is something that affects up to of all men at some stage of their lives.

Unfortunately, sometimes some problems arise that prevent having an optimum sex life. Premature ejaculation (PE) is one of these problems that affect thousands of men and cause boring sex life. The condition is characterized by the male consistently reaching orgasm within the first few minutes of sexual intercourse. Many men feel embarrassed about suffering from premature ejaculation and are reluctant to discuss it. Luckily, this problem is also one of the easiest sexual disorders to solve, if tackled right and solved from both mental and physical levels. Here are 10 tips for better sex, which should keep the two of you hot for some time to come.

40%

5 TIPS TO TACKLE THE PHYSICAL ASPECT: 1. Try Kegel exercises. Women to strengthen their pelvic exercises traditionally do these, but they also can help men with premature ejaculation problems. For this exercise, tighten the buttocks muscles and hold for 1 second. Do this exercise 15 times in a row at first, then gradually increase the repetitions to 70 over the period of a few weeks. Perform the exercises twice daily to strengthen the muscles that are used during orgasm. Try stimulating, then stopping stimulation entirely. Keep repeating this pattern. Each time, you should be able to hold off the orgasm for a longer time. Eventually, your man will be able to control his orgasms. 2. Use Durex Performa for longer lasting pleasure. Durex is the world’s number one condom brand with nearly 80 years of quality experience. Durex Performa contains a special lube – called Benzocaine – inside the condom which helps the man to control climax and prolong excitement…which means longer lasting sex. 80 |

| September 2012

3. Change his diet. Fat and cholesterol can begin to affect the time an erection can last. When an erection begins to last less time, the brain might try to achieve orgasm quickly. When this occurs, a pattern of premature ejaculation can develop. Prepare simple healthy meals that include plenty of raw vegetables, whole grains, fresh fruits, and lean meats. 4. Motivate him to go to the gym! Being in better shape can help men gain self-confidence, which probably is lost due to PE. The body needs to be active to help blood flow and help the lymph gland to do its job of cleaning out the body. The overall benefits of exercise and a fit healthy body are too numerous to mention here; suffice to say that you will benefit massively in the bedroom and exercise really helps your mental state as well. 5. Try different positions. The positions you engage in during sex may affect how long your partner lasts during sex. Take control and get on top to help your spouse last longer, or get traditional with the missionary position.

5 TIPS TO TACKLE THE MENTAL ASPECT: 1. Have sex more often. Often, men who wait too long between sexual encounters mentally build up pressure, so when they do have sex, ejaculation happens quickly. If you want your partner to last longer, have sex with him more often. This will give him a chance to relax and get to know his body. The best way to combat premature ejaculation is by learning to control the sensations prior to orgasm. This method takes time and practice, but it is very effective. 2. Create the right environment for sex. It’s important to add a few more stimulating aspects to your sex life to keep things interesting. One way to beat premature ejaculation fast without causing too much discomfort? The answer is by using lubricant! Use stimulating lubricants, like Durex Play Sweet Strawberry, which is a fun and fruity way to spice up your sex life. Enjoy the taste and aroma of strawberries all year round for a delicious intimate experience. It’s sugar free so indulge as often as you like. Play lubes can ease vaginal dryness and intimate discomfort whilst creating a sensual experience for both married couples. Plus, if you apply more lubricants, the friction would be greatly reduced. This will also increase the sensational pleasure you experience and help you to last longer in bed! 3. Slow down and take deep breaths. It’s easy for

you and your spouse to get excited in the heat of the moment, but your excitement may lead to early ejaculation for him. Take it slow and enjoy the moment. Encourage your husband to take long, gentle strokes during sex and practice relaxed breathing techniques. When women orgasm first, it relieves some of the pressure to please and the psychological anxiety that feeds into PE. Focus on what’s happening now, and orgasm will happen naturally. 4. Communicate. It seems obvious, but good communication between you and your partner can make or break a successful session. If he doesn’t know what you want, he’s not in a great position to give it to you, and vice versa! Be careful not to hurt his pride as sexual performance is a sensitive spot for everyone. Focus on the positives. If he’s worried and wants to talk, reassure him and offer gentle advice rather than criticism. But don’t push the issue; stressing him out will only make things worse! 5. Massage. Sensual touch is one of the most highly relaxing and sexy things you can do for your partner, which is why it makes it onto our 10 tips for better sex list. Our bodies are almost without exception tense in some areas, if not many areas. This hinders our energy flow; including sexual energy flow. A relaxing sensual massage can unlock his/her body to some very intense orgasms and much better sex in the end. The ability to relax your partner in this way should be high on your list of skills to master.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER: Make sure you are both relaxed. Premature ejaculation is best solved in a comfortable environment. Don’t stop or feel embarrassed by this problem. The more embarrassed a man feels, the less likely he will be to discuss it. This will prolong the problem and could make it worse. Still have more burning problems, stay tuned for more from Durex. They will support us in providing efficient solutions for all your intimate matters. September 2012 |

Mother & Child

Are You Pushing Your Kids TOO HARD? Naturally, most parents have good intentions towards their children. They enroll their children in activities because they want them to have a rich, happy childhood. They sacrifice their own time to make sure their children are at practices and competitions. Of course, these parents love their children, and the last thing they would want is for them to feel stressed.

Y

et for some, the motivation is not always noble. Some parents push their children to succeed in the interest of their own egos. Others use their children to relive their own childhood dreams. Still others are motivated by social pressure. It can be difficult to know where the line is between encouraging your child to do his/her best and 82 |

| September 2012

pushing your child too far. The following is some advice on how to ensure that your child can achieve success and happiness without applying excessive pressure. ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO PLAY ANY SPORT OR ACTIVITY S/HE ENJOYS Fun is often the biggest motivator and kids often drop out when it’s no longer enjoyable.

PERMISSIVENESS IS THE PRINCIPLE OF TREATING CHILDREN AS IF THEY WERE ADULTS; AND THE TACTIC OF MAKING SURE THEY NEVER REACH THAT STAGE. Thomas Szasz

HAVE BALANCE If your child excels at a particular sport or musical instrument, encourage that talent, but also make sure your child is being exposed to many activities and meets many different children. It is OK for children to be involved in activities, but make sure they are not missing out on being a kid and participating in things other kids do, like sleepover parties and birthday parties. Don't go to the extreme when raising your child. Don't over-schedule your child and bombard him/her with a million different activities, because this can have negative results. SUPPORT YOUR CHILD’S DECISION NOT TO PLAY A SPORT OR TAKE PART IN AN ACTIVITY IF S/HE DOESN’T WANT TO Pushing them to do something they don’t want to can create conflict, poor motivation and problems at home and school. SOCIALIZE YOUR CHILD It is important to make sure your child has the best chance to succeed in the world, and a way to do this is to make sure your child is socialized for the real world. Do they know how to make friends? Do they know how to share? Can they teach their talent to others and without showing it off ? Do they know how to adapt to situations as they arise? Make sure your child is prepared for the world outside of your house and outside of their hobby. You cannot shelter your child from the real world forever. LET YOUR CHILD PURSUE HIS/HER PASSION NOT YOURS Is your child doing it because s/he has a passion for it and love it, or is

it your dream and passion? If your child complains about the activity and seems to be unhappy, maybe it is time to consider another outlet for fun, even if you want them to continue with it. LET YOUR CHILD MAKE MISTAKES To do so is part of learning and if kids are so afraid of messing up, they often quit trying and unknowingly stop improving. ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO SET GOALS AND MEASURE HIS/HER OWN PROGRESS Try to ensure the goals are realistic without becoming overwhelming. ENCOURAGE GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP AT ALL TIMES No one likes a sore loser. DON’T DISCOUNT, IGNORE OR BLAME OTHERS FOR YOUR CHILD’S POOR PERFORMANCE OR MISTAKES While it’s not necessary to continuously berate your child for a poor performance or for making a mistake, it is okay to hold them accountable in an encouraging way. Kids learn from their mistakes and it can help motivate them to try their best. DON’T FOCUS ONLY ON WINNING Focus on teamwork, fun, effort and skill development DON’T CRITICIZE OR YELL AT YOUR CHILD, ESPECIALLY IN FRONT OF OTHERS This will embarrass your child and cause stress and pressure. Provide

ALWAYS MAKE THE BEST OF THE BEST, AND NEVER MAKE BAD WORSE. Earl of Chesterfield feedback positively, calmly and in a non-judgmental way. All kids should be given the freedom to just be kids. Pushing them to do follow your agenda won’t work. Instead let your child discover his/her own talents and create their own goals. Be encouraging and show patience in your efforts to help them polish their ability. Allow them the freedom to play and experience the simple things in life that kids need to in order to develop a healthy sense of self. September 2012 |

I happily set a column for every series name, channel, time, and of course its +2 versions!

T

his Ramadan was a real shock to me! There was no special series that drew my attention totally and kept me watching in anticipation, except this one series! “Maa Sabq El Israr” was by far my favorite! Of course the interiors which made everyone green with envy and gave hats off to the interior decorator was something that made it classy and appealing. Aside from Magued El Masry’s hair and Ferrari, his acting was super convincing. The only comment I got for the first 20 episodes was that, “There is something fishy about him! He is too good to be true!” I was so upset it turned out true! I am so furious that I didn’t figure it out earlier while everyone 84 |

was so sure about it! All actors were super talented. Ghada Abdel Razik was just perfect although I would have loved to see her in some other outfits! Wasn’t convincing to me being a female lawyer in Egypt and going to court in a mini skirt! But anyways I’d have to say she is an actress! Her addicted son was beyond heartbreaking and did his part really effectively. Her daughter was just the perfect candidate for the role. Last but not least Ahmed Rateb, as always glowing in any role he plays. The bad part in me just enjoyed the revenge, was just satisfying enough!

I watched “Khotoot Hamra” as well. It was really nice till they killed Ahmed El Sakka’s wife; Youssra El Lozy. Then I could read the whole story out automatically! It wasn’t the best especially that it came just after his movie “El Maslaha” which shared the same plot! I cannot not mention Mahrez Rehan‫ !‏‬He is a super star to come soon! He even crossed El Sakka’s acting in this series! Rania Youssef was super and Ahmed Rezk couldn’t be any better! The surprising hit for me was Karim Abou Zeid, he was the embodiment of a peasant with his annoying laugh! “9 Gamet El Dowal” was fun! I couldn’t describe it anything but mere fun. Although I though it held an important political connotation, I failed to figure it out eventually! The series was a good chance for young

actors and actresses from the Arab region to show up in such highly rated time.

Well, as for “Al Zoga Al Rabaa,” I read a comment on twitter that can sum it all up; “I couldn’t imagine I grew up to the extent to see Al Hag Metwali’s son do the same thing!” At first, I thought so too! But after some episodes it turned out that it tackles the same problem but from a different perspective. The script also held some religious debates and serious conversation that delivers the message easily. I liked it! But unfortunately, the series held some inappropriate sexual connotations that wasn’t suitable for the holy month at all. I won’t mention the “Aheeboush” part!

Well as for programs, “Ramez Taalab El Saharaa” was beyond disgusting to me! No offense meant, and although shockingly it was rated as the number one show in Ramadan 2012, I failed to find any excuse to love it or watch it! I was invited over to an Iftar and sadly everyone was watching and I was forced to have my eyes hooked on it! It was really a disaster! O might sound like a drama queen whining about being afraid someone might suffer a heart attack over a silly joke, but I really hate such pranks! “El Hokm Baad El Mozawla” was a creative idea, I can’t deny, and the reactions were just priceless! Especially Tohamy Basha! OMG it was hilarious! If you didn’t see it, Utube has all the series!

“Meraty Fi Warta,” well, that was just lovely! Through airing 30 episodes there wasn’t a single wife who didn’t just lose it totally! There were some wives who were irritated to the extent of asking for divorce! What can I say; WOMEN! The presenter was great! She was great at irritating women. An entertaining show where you can easily see various reactions from women whos appearance is a pure reflection of irritation!

As for “Samar Wal Regal,” well, I would have loved for her to have different hair dos! She had 30 days to make people know she has a distinctive style without appearing with the same hair do every day! Some questions I wouldn’t call daring, but not the kind of questions I would like a little one to watch his/her favorite actor answering! I am sure many of you watched other series and programs given the fact that TNS found that Egyptians spend 5 hours in front of the TV in Ramadan. Detecting Egyptians’ viewership habits in Ramadan, the survey showed that 60% of Egyptians watch Arabic series in Ramadan; while 12% watch programs, in comparison to 30% in normal days outside the month of Ramadan. Unlike expectations, viewership of religious programs showed only 3% of total TV viewership.

This was it for me in Ramadan! I feel like I missed Yahia El Fakharani, Adel Emam, and Nour El Sherif ’s series, but say what; I have all year long to gather everything I missed! September 2012 |
