A Phone Call…

It’s weird how the meaning of a phone call changes with the various phases and ages we go through. I am proudly a member of the pre-mobile/smart-phones generation; where there weren’t even a caller ID. In fact, just getting a phone line at home with an easy number was a huge accomplishment. Back then when the phone rang, the prediction game of who could it be was a norm; although it’s either your aunt or uncle, grandma, cousin, or one of the few friends who you gave your number to because that was the definition of being “close;” or maybe it was just My introvert definition of “close” back then. Anyways, I remember as a kid being excited when the phone rang; even if the call wasn’t for me… Then years go by bringing the wave of digital phones with caller Id and answer-machines, which toned down my excitement for phone calls. Now with the usual calls from family members and friends, comes a whole bunch of wrong numbers and tele-sales calls. During my teen years I had become more aware of the context of a phone call; my mum’s tone changed. She is usually talking to my grand ma about some worries concerning me, my brother, and some trouble at work. I keep nagging: “Can you please get off the phone? I want to call my best-friend.” I am on the phone with my friend discussing the huge fight that took place at school; or going over final revisions for exams, or arranging for an outing. Then one of those days the phone rang after midnight; my grand ma passed away… Years pass by; now I have a blackberry. Thank God for texting! Shouldn’t he text first? Iphone is the best! My phone is ringing, I’m not in the mood for talking; if it’s an emergency they’ll text. My phone is ringing, it’s an unsaved number; I should get it, maybe they are calling for an interview. One of those days, my mum called: “your aunt is really sick; go to her right away;” my aunt passed away. My mum no longer talks on the phone. My phone is ringing; they’re calling for work. I am talking to my best friend at night; she is going through rough time. Nowadays I always put my phone on silent; I don’t want to talk anyways. The excitement of phone calls faded away… Dear reader, if you still get butterflies when your phone rings, when that special someone’s name on the screen, then you’re one of the lucky ones. Hold on to that for as long as you could…

FASHION NEWS Multi-Art Egypt Brings “La Mode a Beyrouth” (LMAB) to Cairo! After the huge success LMAB had in Beirut, it has recently announced the launch of its very first franchise in Cairo. L.I.P.S Managment announced their collaboration with Multi-Art, a leading inventive event management company in Cairo. MULTI-ART are bringing you the latest fashion trends through “La Mode A Beyrouth-Cairo” taking place the coming November; an innovative project that will compete with the biggest fashion platforms in the world, and which will attract leading Egyptian designers to showcase their latest collections as well as promoting them to invade the world of fashion from Egypt instead of other countries. In addition to that, the young emerging designers will have their share through a competition “Cairo Young Fashion Designer Competition” that will take place in every edition of LMAB-CAIRO to promote the new talents and lead them to reveal their creations on global platforms including LMAB in Beirut, Cairo and Dubai.

Massimo Dutti Launches Its Spring Summer 2016 Collections For Men, Women, Boys and Girls Colour and a combination of lines could well be considered the stars of this new season in the Dutti Women’s Collection; ranging from olive greens to the khaki and petroleum blues of the Industry collection, right through to the arabesque airs and reddish tones of the Asilah collection, in addition to the Ikat motifs, prints and earthy colours making up the small Atlas Collection. Also, beautifully worked leather accessories, esparto for shoes, even the total look of mustard, burgundy and natural hue prints presage the seasonal changes. In the men’s collection we find ourselves with a wide ranging variety of neutral shades that clash with the appearance of different colours such as currant red or earth oranges. Earthy shades, indigos and beiges recalling the wondrous decade of the fifties in Cuba, country that holds the starring role in the entire Spring Summer Dutti Collection for men. The B&G (Boys and Girls) Collection is represented by colours such as yellows, greys and the novelty of black tones for the girl’s collection. And for the boy’s collection we have to underscore the denim shirts and light-weight feather parkas as essential accessories for casual and laid-back looks. 24 | March 2016

Trend Zombies BY: Ghadir Al agabany

OH OH!! Are the dead and buried trends coming back or hopefully not? I guess there isn’t one trend that’s tossed for good. They all revive and re-incarnate creepily in to our lives. Are fashionistas and trend -setters planning to rock the unfortunately faux-pas fashion we gladly missed at a certain time in our lives? The constantly changing fashion landscape is an everlasting destiny we need to gulp as the past will eventually haunt us. I understand, some of us are very hard to part with some of our clothes specially giving away items that identified us in person is a total feel of insecurity, devastating dilemma I’m certain! I guess we’re doomed for good due to the fact that many of the faux-pas fashion trends will be back; scarily enough, some ARE already back!!

The Extra Strechy Jeggings One trend that needs to forever disappear, the most unflattering piece of THING!! the super LEEECRA stretchy, pocket-less, elastic high waist jeggings!!!! Or on the other hand the so pro working pants, apparently formal and frantic. Please tell me this isn’t deja vu.

The Over-the-Top Ugly Footwear Contrastingly, Yeezy is bringing us way back to the slavery salvation era. Dig the creative direction and theme concept, but celebrity designers, honestly ought to cool it down and face reality. I like your footwear Mr West, stick to those. See!! Would rather have Kanye’s shoes than those back-to-bear hunting objects!! Spare us the ugly shoes, disproportion and revolting, there’s more beauty and creativity in life beyond this. Even royal history and ethnic culture could help you to invent something better than this, please!! 26 | March 2016

The Scary Smokey Eyes Raccoon eyes are way different than smokey eyes, those ain’t smokey, those are spine-chilling scary. It’s not halloween, so you really don’t need to freak the hell out of us on daily basis. Oh Gosh, this trend DIE, DIE, Please DIE, you look spooky dead anyways…

The Blast from the Not-SoChic Menswear Past Are you serious?? You’re coming back?? A mixture of royalty hair dos, shiny texture 50’s fabric, Sound of Music curtain clothing, prints, loose & baggy everything for men. God bless you Dean and Hudson

The Extra Loose Harem Pants Harem pants passed all phases of women trends for over 10 years, kids and men still currently on. Whether parachute, Aladdin or whatever they’re identified with, they should disappear for the sake of the female feminine physique’s sake. They definitely had other reasons for wearing them at the Ottoman Empire Era.

We mumble & humble, comment & compete, argue & analyse, at the end of the day, if you can’t beat them, join them. Fashion trends rise, glow and shine, drop down to point zero, pass some years, boom again and reach the peak. Believe it or not, sometimes, it’s quiet intriguing to wake the dead. March 2016 | 27

Beauty Skin

The Art of

Concealing... By: AMINA METWALLY

How to find the right shade of foundation and how to apply it? So is it always been hard to find the right foundation color and tone for you? Have you always been worried about how to apply it and not wanting to look too fake with too much makeup on? Skin tones are predominantly neutral cool or warm; most skin tones are neutral; meaning that they are mostly equal balance of cool and warm undertones. To determine what your undertones are, take a look at the underside of your forearm. If your vein looks more blue, then you most likely have a pinkish undertone. If your vein looks more greenish, then you have more of a yellow or golden undertone. Now once you knew your undertone you are ready to pick the shade of your foundation. However, make sure before applying any foundation you prep your skin with moisturizer and a primer. And I’ve gathered some tips to help you out a bit:

38 | March 2016

1. Test your foundation on your upper chest or lower neck area; make sure you do it in a good lighting (day light) once its same color and you can't really tell where you have applied it then this is the color for you. 2. Start distributing it on your face using your finger tips or a brush; I prefer MAC 130 brush. 3. Apply in a circular motion. 4. Use a beauty blender to tap softly on your face and make sure that foundation has been absorbed and distributed well.

Wherever there is skin discoloration, camouflage makeup is designed to diminish or completely mask the problem, leaving you with a normalized skin. Undesired skin undertones can be neutralized with colour tints or concealer applied under or mixed with foundation. There are also different color correctors: • Green is used to neutralize red tones on the skin and is very useful for acne, red scars, red blotchiness on cheeks or nose or bluish red bruises. • Orange/Apricot is used for dark brown colored skin, dark circles, freckles and hyper pigmentation.

5. Then powder your face with powder brush.

• Yellow is used for purple, blue, reddish colors and dark circles on light skin.

PS: Avoid the use of lighter foundation tone or powder as it will give an ashy look!

• Pink/Peachy/lavender is used for yellow, dull skin and olive colors.

How to pick the right concealer and apply it After picking the right foundation shade and after knowing your undertone, it’s preferred to pick one or two shades lighter for your concealer. The most flattering way to apply concealer is to draw a triangle with the base under your eye and the point toward your cheek. In case your skin is flawless and you don’t have dark circles this shape instantly creates the illusion that your face is lifted. Think of it as holding a flashlight against your cheek, shining the light right underneath your eye, and drawing the focus upward.

In case you have dark circles or areas that need to be fully concealed, here are some corrective and Camouflage Techniques to use:

The Best

Natural Remedies for your Hair

Coconut oil Benefit: Coconut oil is known for its hair benefits. It stimulates hair follicles and improves scalp health. Coconut oil also moisturizes your hair and protects it against dandruff, in addition to repairing split ends. Method: • Coconut oil treatment needs time when applied, so make sure you have an hour or two before washing it off. • The Amount of oil needed varies depending on your hair length. • Put the oil into a bowl then heat and stir; keep repeating reheating in a microwave and stirring till it’s fully melt. • Wait till it cool down a bit then apply it to your scalp and massage for a while. • Detangle it with a comb, then wrap your hair in a towel and leave it on.

Garlic Juice Benefit: Yes it smells so bad but totally worth it! Garlic juice is known as natural stimulus for blood circulation, so applying it would promote hair growth. It’s been used for ages, so this recipe is guaranteed. Method: • Squeeze out a table spoon of garlic and mix it with olive oil, coconut oil or hot water. • To prevent irritation that pure garlic oil might cause, you could add equal amount of honey. • Apply the mixture to your scalp and leave for 15 to 20 minutes then wash it off. 40 | March 2016

Greek Yogurt Benefit: Greek yogurt has been popular as a very beneficial nutritional component, but what you might not know is that it’s known for its deep hair-moisturizing/ conditioning capabilities. Method: • Simply apply the Greek yogurt and leave for 20 to 30 minutes while covering it with a plastic hat or a shower cap. The amount of yogurt needed depends on the length and thickness of your hair.

Raw Eggs Benefit: You can use egg yolk as a natural hair conditioner/ moisturizer; because it’s rich in vitamin A. Raw eggs are particularly good for dry hair, help treat damaged ends, and reduce dandruff. Method: • To reduce hair loss, you can mix/beat a couple of eggs and apply the mixture to your hair. Massage for several minutes, leave it on for around an hour then wash it off. • You could add honey and olive oil to egg yolks for a better moisturizing mix. Same method of application. • For better hair condoning add avocado to egg yolk. Leave the mixture on for 20 minutes then wash it off.

CREATE A COZY FAMILY HOME By : Souraya Hassan

Seperated living in your living room! I love to design a personal home for a family where they can live together. The living is an important room in a home. If you have space, put the sofa in the middle of the room to create two different corners in one room. Put down a kelim rug in front of the sofa; and all this together creates a personal and cozy space to stay with family and friends.

Go XL with green! I am a big fan of using green in homes, especially palms and cacti. Green gives a room a lively atmosphere and it looks amazing as well. I put this palm in a terracotta pot on my white tv dressoir from Ikea. Growing plants in your home is also a nice acitivy to do with your kids so they learn more about growing and to take care of green. Beside XL plants, I love to work with small cacti and succulents as well to make the styling complete.

44 | March 2016

Mix of coffee tables! Do you want to give your living a playful look? You can mix different coffee tables together. For example, I mixed these wooden tables from Morocco with a design table from Hay. On the tables, I put a mix of candles ( take care with kids!), but green as well. Nice to add a small vase where your child can put their own little flower.

Mix of cushions on the sofa! The best way to create a cozy look in your living is to work with a mix of textiles. On my sofa you can see cushions from Caïro based company Inca&Co, Jamini from Paris, House Doctor from Denmark and my own linen cushions. I love to mix all these different styles together and stick to the colourpalette Ive chosen fort his livingroom. These cushions are available at bintihomeshop. nl.

Shopping Tips : When you’re going to style your own home try to mix old things with new things. Family pieces with a story are the best way to add some personality into a room and mix this with products you’ve brought from travels. To style your own (family) home is so much fun! Try to go to different shops and places to mix everything together and create your own personal home.

Be Like the Zapp’s! BY: FADY HANNA

O

ne of the myths about traveling is that once you have kids, forget about traveling! Lots of people will actually tell you travel now while you're single because you never know what will life bring to you, but in a way or another, the forces of the universe will stop you from travelling the world and achieving your dream just because of the fact that you have a family right now.

46 | March 2016

Well, looking at the example of the family of Herman Zapp, this myth gets a punch in the face! Herman Zapp is an Argentinean traveler, who is going around the world with his family of six in a 1928 car! They have gone through challenging routes from Argentina to Alaska! Traveling together as family is actually a great fun but the million dollar question is, how? One will say "I used to be single and now I need to multiply everything by at least four, which makes the whole thing unaffordable," and such statement is the reason why this myth needs to be debunked.

Don't Fly or Fly to Somewhere Close First of all, don't pick an expensive far destination; Instead, go somewhere close; whether it’s a resort in Egypt or somewhere in the neighboring countries. This will save you a lot of money so please delay the family trip to Los Angeles until you can really afford it or until

your kids grow up and contribute to the costs. If possible, drive to your destination and don't fly, like the Zapp family!

Don't Stay in Fancy Hotels Secondly, try to avoid fancy hotels that charge huge amount of money per night. Try getting a private room in a hostel or rent a suite or even try ‘Airbnb’ in order to cut accommodation costs. A perfect scenario will be getting invited over at your friend's house.

Spend money on experiences rather than things Another important thing is to be aware of that fact that doing all the shopping you're dreaming about will cost you a lot! My advice is to spend money on experiences rather than things because that is what will make you happy and will make your trip memorable.

Q&A

LADYBIRD’S You Ask, Experts Answer! 1

Dr. Andrew Murphy

Allergy and Immunology

Is it possible to randomly develop cat allergy to some breeds and not others? Doctor’s Answer:

It happens. All cats produce allergens but some may produce more or less allergen that others. In general, males make more allergen than females and neutered animals make less allergen.

2

Dr. Robert Stachler

ENT and Head and Neck Surgery

I have random pain in back of my neck with burning sensation at times. It comes and goes and does not respond to painkillers; what could it be? Doctor’s Answer:

Try ice or rotate it with warm compresses 20 mins every hour. This could be a nerve ping enemy pain. You may want to see your family doctor to make sure it is not muscle pain. You could try a muscle relaxant if it is. You could also get an imaging study to make sure it is not a disc issue.

Dr. Tanya Russo Pediatrics

My Baby boy won’t look anyone in their eyes. Is it true that it is a sign of autism or developmental delay? Doctor’s Answer:

Visual development in infants is stimulated by contrast, so young infants will often look at the edge of your face or head rather than the eyes, but some brief eye contact, particularly when nursing, is expected. Pediatric ophthalmologists can evaluate your baby for vision loss, otherwise careful monitoring by your pediatrician can help early diagnosis of autism.

Dr. Nabil Moufarrej Sleep Medicine

What could be the causes of night sweats? Doctor’s Answer:

Infections, thyroid disease, sleep apnea and hormonal issues are among the causes of night sweats.

Dr. Charles Cattano Gastroenterology I have trouble swallowing saliva. I can swallow water and food; I’m swallowing and clearing my throat all the time. Ideas? Doctor’s Answer: Difficulty swallowing (“dysphasia”) can be distinguished as a “transfer” problem (difficulty moving food from mouth to top of esophagus), “transit” problem (difficulty moving food down the esophagus), “spasm”, gerd (due to sphincter problems), or obstructive (webs, rings, strictures, ulcer, tumor). It’s better to see a gastroenterologist for evaluation & treatment.

Dr. Milroy Samuel

Obstetrics and Gynecology

When my period starts I suffer from high leg pain for two or three hours. For the remaining days, pain is normal, but for these two hours it’s so difficult. Is that normal? Doctor’s Answer:

It’s unusual. It could be endometriosis. Take nsaids in the mean time and see if that helps; if not visit your doctor.

6

Dr. Irving Harper Internal Medicine I’ve had a numbness and tingling on the left side of my face and head and every once in a while I get a cold sensation on the same side? Doctor’s Answer:

There are several reasons. Your symptoms suggest possible bell’s palsy presentations, which is temporary to something more ominous like a small stroke, multiple sclerosis, or a brain mass. You should see your primary care doctor right away for the proper evaluation, and if he /she is uncomfortable, they will refer you to a neurologist.

Annie Ladino Celebrity Stylist

Do you have any advice for those looking for a career in the fashion industry? Expert’s Answer:

My very first piece of advice is to reach as big as you want to. Don’t shy away or think something is impossible; never do that. Get internships or apprenticeships with someone that you really admire so that you can learn. Fashion can be hard, and training for it can be very hard, but you have to keep going and be very gracious and polite. I constantly tell people who are in this industry that they’re very lucky to be here, because not many people get to do this.

Zika! • Zika virus was first detected back in 1947, and is named after the Zika Forest in Uganda, where it was first discovered. • Zika virus is transmitted through Aedes Mosquitoes, found mostly in tropical zones; however two species, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, the most aggressive types, have spread to the new world countries, including the US among several other countries. • Aedes are most likely to bite in the day time and usually associated with areas where water is found. • Some studies showed that the virus could be sexually transmitted; but it’s not widely confirmed yet. • The only confirmed method known for transmission is from the Aedes mosquitoes to humans, and from infected humans to other mosquitoes in case they bite them; in this case, the infected mosquito becomes a transmitter. 50 | March 2016

Branzino

Brought India All the Way to Cairo at Dusit Thani Lakeview

D

usit Thani Lakeview Cairo announces the latest addition to its themed nights, the Indian night; where chef Kala, hailing from Dehradun in Northern India, is bringing with him the different tastes of India to Branzino restaurant. Chef Kala prepares extraordinary Indian culinary experience every Sunday for dinner. Branzino is an international cuisine restaurant where it brings the continents to one place. Joining the Egyptian, Lebanese and Italian nights, now great spices of India are available every Sunday at Branzino restaurant in Dusit Thani Lakeview Cairo.

When we heard that Branzino Restaurant is preparing an Indian night, we had a sort of mixed feelings. Okay so we were bored and Indian food is known for being exotic, so maybe it’s exactly what we need to break the routine. Yet, could we really endure all those indian spices? And what about the smell? (Yep, we’re not exactly Indian food experts!). Long story short, we went and now we know that we couldn’t have been more right about the excitement of the experience, but at the same time, we couldn’t be more wrong about the spices part, because Branzino - Dusit Thani Lakeview, managed to keep its luxurious aroma despite the wide range of Indian food and spices that they got displayed. It was a bit peculiar to be honest; we don’t know how to put it into words really.

It was just intriguing to experience the exotic Indian food in such a fine dining luxury; a combination that only Branzino could nail. Now let’s discuss the food, shall we? Honestly not everyone has Indian food on their favorite list, but we have to admit, it was like we had an intensive course in Indian culinary. Branzino had a huge buffet filled with all kinds of ethnic Indian recipes; from the basic spices, dips and soups to the mouth-watering samosa, and tandoori chicken like you’ve never tasted before. And don’t get us started on the dessert station; you got to see for yourself to believe it! Bottom line, if you want to eat Indian, Branzino Restaurant is the place to go!

Also, you should avoid eating right before sleep, or consuming heavy meals at night, because many of acid refluxes occur at night and could even wake you up during sleep. If you like eggs, stick to the egg white and avoid the yolk. Oatmeal and whole-grains are good for acid reflux as well; and try to avoid citrus juices and fruits.

The Vegetarian Dilemma BY: Noura Hassaballa

F

or years you’ve been under the impression that meat, eggs and animal products in general are bad for you, and that you’ll live longer and enjoy your health if you decided to cut out all these nutrient dense foods from your diet. In fact, if you asked the average person on the street whether a vegetarian or vegan diet is healthier than an omnivorous diet, they’d probably say yes. But is this really true?

58 | March 2016

Vegetarian diets can be as unhealthy as omnivores. If you think about it, you can actually become overweight being a vegetarian just from snacking on unhealthy carbs, too much nuts, and legumes because they do contain carbs. Animal proteins are what gives you the feeling of fullness and satiety, they are more complete when it comes to essential amino acids that your body can’t make on its own. For you to be able to get the adequate amounts of protein on a vegetarian diet you need to eat more portions which means more calories, and that will definitely lead to weight gain.

The problem with vegetarian diets

Heme Iron There are two types of iron, heme and non-heme. The first one is found in meat, fish, and poultry, and it’s easier for your body to absorb. The second one comes from plants and it is not easily absorbed. Because vegetarian diets only contain non-heme iron, one should be aware of foods that are high in iron and techniques that can promote iron absorption, like adding vitamin C sources to the food to increase absorption. Recommendations for iron for vegetarians may be as much as 1.8 times higher than for nonvegetarians.

Omega 3 DHA

While being a vegetarian can put you at a lower risk of high cholesterol, blood pressure, and decrease your chances of having a heart disease, though it will increase your risk of certain nutritional deficiencies. Unless you are on a well-balanced vegetarian diet that provides you with an adequate intake of micronutrients, you will end up categorized as “malnourished”.

An essential fatty acid found in fish and seaweed. One of the vital things that omega 3 fatty acids do is reduce blood clotting which protects against heart attacks. It’s also important for normal cognitive and behavioral function, because it’s highly concentrated in the brain. Symptoms of omega-3 fatty acid deficiency include fatigue, poor memory, dry skin, heart problems, mood swings or depression, and poor circulation.

Vitamin B12

What happens when your diet is legume-based?

The energy vitamin found in meat, fish, dairy products, and eggs. Vitamin b12 is very important for blood formation, energy production, DNA synthesis, reproductive health, and it helps keep nerve cells and red blood cells healthy. Low levels of vitamin B12 can cause fatigue, weakness, memory loss, and other problems with the nervous system.

Creatine You know that pre-workout powder that gym-freaks take to boost their energy and build more muscle? Yup, that’s it; Creatine. It’s an amino acid found in animal foods and it’s important for muscle energy, proper function of your central nervous system, and brain health. It may not be essential in the diet because the liver produces it anyways, but why have lower levels of something that your body needs. Don’t tell me that you can take creatine supplements to prevent deficiency, because you can’t live your whole life on a powder form of an essential nutrient, on top of that you will be exhausting your kidneys and liver.

1. Legumes are hard to digest, and can result in sever digestion stress, also making you bloated. 2. Some contain estrogen mimics, which will disturb your hormonal system. 3. Can cause leaky gut, chronic inflammation, and allergic reaction because they contain protease inhibitors which keep proteins from being appropriately broken down and absorbed; therefore causing the body to secrete more enzymes resulting in the problems mentioned above. 4. Contain phytates which inhibit minerals from being absorbed. In my opinion you shouldn’t jump into any type of diet 100% from the get-go. You can decrease certain foods and introduce new foods to your system, but eliminating foods completely put you at a high risk of allergies and food sensitivity as well.

Love & Relationships

Loving “Noses” Know Boundaries

Family Intervention in the Realm of Your Lasting Love Life BY: LAUREN K. CLARK

W

We all know the old saying that relationships take work. Lots of work. Involving the efforts of a couple, and what they are willing to contribute in the development of their relationship. It’s not always easy. And those ultraromantic movies that show you this “perfect romance,” where problems don’t exist, are proof of the lies we have been told. Relationships can be complicated. 62 | March 2016

The different phases of going through the “likes” and “dislikes” of your partner are reminders of how human you are. At the same time, relationships don’t have to be a 24-hour challenge. Do you remember that little fraction of a statement of “what they are willing to contribute in the development of their relationship.” Now did you catch that? They and their. Which means that this is a 2-person relationship. And yet with the involvement of family members, a couple is soon to feel a relationship strain. A burden, where this romance is not even about them anymore. So you are in a relationship. The two of you are madly in love. But everyone seems to have an opinion about your relationship. Mom is always interjecting her “two-sense,” every time you and hubby, or boyfriend, or lover get into an argument. And on many occasions, she takes your side. Could it possibly be because you continue to tell her your problems, or run to her every time the two of your get into an argument?

So, as opposed to working out your problems, you pretend to be a 5-year old boy or girl, who has to run to Mommy because so-and-so “did it again,” “said it again,” or “is getting on your nerves.” And once Mom knows, then brother, sister, uncle, auntie, grandmothers, and cousins are all blowing up your phone (or his phone) trying to figure out how to make things better (or straighten him out). Is that pretty accurate? Oh, don’t worry! It’s probably the same ordeal with his family! The fact of the matter is that boundaries must be set when it comes to family and your relationship. Of course, there are those emergency cases where you may be in an abusive relationship, and desperately need to be in the comforts and protection of your family. Research has shown that a major sign of an abusive relationship, is when the partner weeds the victim from his or her closest friends or family members. In such circumstances, yes it is a must for family intervention.

Consistently needing family intervention, every time you and your mate get into an argument, or when he/she says something that you didn’t like places a huge question mark, as to whether you are ready for a committed relationship to begin with. And let’s be honest for a minute. . .making room of more than two in your relationship should make you analyze the rational for your family (or certain family members) feeling the “need” to have to make your business the highlight of their day. Not all family advice is good advice. It is very important to even question the motives for certain family members. Why do you figure that particular group of the family, spending more time wondering how you and “so and so are doing” than their own lives?

Lastly, there are the minor cases, when you need healthy counseling from a family member. There is a problem that the two of you simply have no solution for, and are seeking healthy wisdom as a last solution. Anywhere from pregnancy, infidelity, betrayal, or whatever ugly weed has creeped its way into the relationship. That is fine.

Many are very aware of that old saying that blood is thicker than water. Reality Check: Not always. Sometimes blood faces a case of anemia. The hemoglobin is low, a reduction of iron and oxygen does not make it to the red, blood cells. You get the jist? Jealousy and envy can play a major role into why certain family members choose to stick their nosey noses into the business of your love life. There are those sad souls who simply get a natural high in feeling that you are not happy in your relationship, simply because they aren’t in theirs; or even more harsh... don’t have one! So, they continue to pretend that they are concerned about your well-being, while secretly hoping that it will die out. They may even start drama by speaking negatively about your partner, hoping to implant that same perception into your mind. For all you know, they may even be angered that he is actually a good man/good woman. The one that they wish they could have. Possibly even secretly plotting how to get some alone time with your man/woman. Shady isn’t it?

Now DON’T hold your breath. . .because you are going to need it! Unless you are experiencing those described reasons for family members getting involved into personal and private matters of your relationship, there is absolutely no reason for them to stick their noses between you and your romantic partner. At 18 (at least in certain countries), you are considered an adult. That means that you should be working on handling relationship matters in the way of an...adult.

Moving on... No mathematical formulae or prescription is needed for this rather simple solution! Unless your relationship is one of despair, deconstruction, or causing unnatural separations between you and your family. . .keep family and private matters in your relationship SEPARATE. If you are truly happy (and that is a question you have to ask yourself) with your husband, boyfriend, or lover, problems should be solved on the basis of the two of you wanting it to last!

Those other extreme circumstances, such as the verge of a breakdown, break-up, or divorce could also benefit from a dose of family support, or intervention; especially, if they feel that the two of you are a good fit. Truly loving each other and not together solely for the purpose of political gain, or economic advancement would ignite families to get involved for the sake of saving the marriage or union (especially if there are children).

Mother & Child

Simple Sentimental Ways to

Show Your Mom that you Love Her 64 | March 2016

Just say it! When is the last time you told your mom that you love her? And please don’t say “she already knows I do!” Or “It’s better to actually show it” or any of the other clichés. When is the last time you actually explicitly said those simple four words: I Love You Mom! Probably not recently enough right? It’s not shameful or anything; seriously it’s shocking how we often forget to say those simple words. Of course we know that actions speak louder than words, and you might be the most generous daughter/son, who swamps their mother with gifts every other day; nevertheless, don’t you think she wants to hear those simple words every once in awhile? Of course she does! So for heaven’s sake just say it… Let her rest Just because you manage to bring your mom a gift every mother’s day doesn’t mean you make her cook you dinner or wash your clothes afterwards; it’s like you give with one hand and take away with the other! You’re not bribing your mom to do you a service. The least you can do on mother’s day is to let her rest; give your mom a break from all the chores. Gather and Toast Every mother needs recognition for all her support; you ought to give her some credit for the times she put up with your nonsense. And no, a “thank you” card won’t do. Just like your name pops up in almost every conversation she has with friends and family, why don’t you do something similar? This Mother’s day, gather your close friends and hers for a celebration in her honor. Prepare a toast, or if you are a tech-savvy, try to put a short video together to pay tribute to all the good memories she brought to your life. Write Something.. Don’t type or text; hold a real pen and write something nice on a piece of paper, like a letter or something for her to frame. No matter how bad your hand-writing is, just the fact that you took the time would make her day; and she probably missed reading your cacography..

Surprise Surprise! Again, we don’t mean the usual surprise gifts. If you’re living abroad, why don’t plan ahead and take a couple of days off for a surprise visit. Even if you’re still living in the same house, you can take a day off and surprise her with a breakfast at bed. Put Her First for a change Okay so this one goes for all the married sons out there: Do Not forget your first love. Every mother would love it if she remains her son’s first love, but unfortunately many sons after getting married tend to put their wives first. So here is a little tip – no matter how kind-hearted and generous you mom is, she would never be fine with the fact that she lost you to another woman. Don’t make her feel that she has been downgraded to second place. On this mother’s day, spend some quality time with her. Take her to dinner at any nice place; just you and her..

DECODING EGYPT.... BY: Haidy Zakaria

Love Your Mom… She Made You a Person It is no secret that any family primarily revolves around the mother; she cooks for you, helps you and generally tries to make sure that she’s sending a normal human being out to the world. Whether she succeeds in the last one is debatable sometimes. But, wonderful as all mothers might be, the Egyptian mother particularly has a special place in our hearts. Let me break it down to you.. When we’re toddlers, anything that is mushed counts as food; mushed potatoes, rice, pees…mushed biscuits sometimes even. If it can be smashed and swallowed, they’re smashing it and feeding it to you. The educational system, according to moms, includes the books, the desk you’re sitting on and her slippers. Those slippers are a vital part of your educational process. If you complain, slipper, if you don’t finish, slipper, if you get bad grades, you guessed it, you get the slipper. Of course, the slipper is not stationary; it is in no way a static object, the slipper has a lot of superpowers like flying across the room and hitting you as you run…and, as if they were all trained by snipers before going into motherhood, they…never…miss. As we grow older, we start to notice that they have a certain vocabulary, like your sweatpants are “bantalon el bejamaa ely beto5rog beeh” , your phone is “El beta3 da” and your music is “El dawsha de.” N.B: “El beta3 da” also applies to your computer, Ipad, TV, and any other technological device you would be holding at the time. Waking you up is a SWAT raid on a drug cartel. She opens the door, turns on all the lights and calls out your name ten thousand times, all the while telling you that you’re already an hour late. (LIEESSS… they’re all lies) But you know, if you look around in one of their drawers, you’ll find that they kept each and every one of your small failed drawings that promised no future artist in any way. You’ll find pictures of you smiling up at her while covered in mud and you will find the macaroni cards you made them for mother’s day. If you go up to her and tell her that you’ve committed murder, she’ll probably sit you down and discuss with you how you and her can fix it. You’ll also find one day that she basically mentioned you in every topic she ever talked about. Your name manages to pop in every sitting with her friends and family, and that is why you’ll find that some people like you or respect you without ever having met you. So get your mom some flowers and take her out to a nice dinner, or stay in and cook of her (if you don’t know how to cook, don’t put her through the misery), but do something nice for your mom…she made you a person after all. 66 | March 2016

Mommy’s Heart By: Noha Maher

I had a job in a fancy place I've always wanted my own special space Where position is met with much dignity and grace And everyone has to meet me with a smile on their face My bosses think I'm sweet just like honey I've been working hard making them money So they treat me well when their days are sunny Then it suddenly hit me, do you know what's funny!? I've always had that place in the heart for my Mommy An endless unconditional love, tenderness and care She is a good person so nice and fair But can you hurt me within her sight! You wouldn't dare Cause then claws will grow and your guts she'll tear

She stands beside me despite the pain she'll endure Taking me in her arms, little was I or mature. And it's only then that I feel safe and secure Her beating heart pumps in my veins love so pure Untarnished by my actions regardless the dirt I throw That heart for me is forever as white as snow She gave up her freedom and youth just to watch me grow Mommy you are my jewel, now I finally know That no matter how hard I try or how much I do I'll never be able to pay you your rightful due
