Editor’s Letter

Find Your Inner Calling Life moves very fast leaving us with barely anytime to pause and look at all the things that happen around us, or take some time alone for inner reflection.

I believe that inner calling comes to each one of us in very subtle ways, but our busy days keep us very distracted to pay any attention or listen carefully. While Ramadan is here, serenity fills the air, and the tempo slows down, giving us more time to ponder on our core values and real life purpose. Ask yourself more questions; think what is it that you want to accomplish in your life? Is there anything you need to change about yourself ? Look at each aspect and think what do you need to focus more on?

Turn down the distractions, meditate and connect more with nature, you will be impressed by the beauty that you had no time to appreciate earlier. Meet new people, listen to inspiring stories, and create a new chapters in your own. Think about the things you used to love but stopped doing in your hectic days.

Journal, journal and again journal! Spill out all your thoughts and emotions on a piece of paper and read them again a year later, you’ll be amazed by how much a person can change in a year. Give back to the community, help those in need, and draw a smile on someone’s face. Reflect on your past experiences; and figure out how these experiences changed you and contributed to the person you are today. Think of your best qualities and think of how you can use them to change things around you.

Allow yourself enough time to dig deep in your soul, think about what really makes you happy, what motivates you, and what elevates your senses. It is only when you silence the buzz happening around you, that you’ll be able to learn more about yourself and pay more attention to your inner calling.

Fashionably Expanding Your Label In Kuwait City

BY GHADIR ALAGABANY Becoming a fashion designer is very possible with talent and education; however, having a fashion label and prospering the business is an entirely different story.

A small group of 12 talented and skillful designers located in Cairo and Alexandria decided to conquer the regional business of fashion by penetrating the Kuwaiti market through showcasing their SS18 capsule Ramadan mini collections to the stylish community of ladies in Kuwait city during April 2018. Chayma & Hagar Ghareeb, Habeiba Soliman, Naglaa & Sara Mostafa, Nahla El Alfy, Heba Abu Ouf, Dina Hamdy, Dalia Beleih & Ingy Yacout, Reham Ezzat & Nivine Hamdy, Mohamed Sami & Moushira Ramadan, Nabiha Ben Zayed, El Azm sisters Kinda, Maha & Nada and Amani Zaki are all established designers with the passion and persistence to go regional.

Kuwaitis are citizens of exquisite taste, elevated living standards with an enormous admiration all the way from high-end brands to new emerging young and talented designers. The population is an estimate of four million with a 70% expat rate. Demographically, the segment targeted were the groups of women between 20 to 50 age bracket, highly educated, internationally exposed, fashion knowledgable and admirers to our local talents. On the other hand, due to its geographical location North-East of the Arabian Peninsula while sharing borders with Iraq and Saudi Arabia, Kuwait society is very diverse and liberal. It has an extremely hot and dry climate in its long summer months; therefore, loose designs, light tones of colors, earth shades,

natural fabrics and smooth textures were extensively selected to satisfy these extreme weather conditions.

Although, the majority of the designers are satisfied with the local Egyptian market and believe the industry is developing well, nevertheless, they all agreed that it’s always smart to also advance one’s own business and explore new markets constantly.

Although, exhibitions might be a short duration to acknowledge a new market, still direct sales, as a marketing tool, in an on-floor trade-exhibition (B2C) allows straight forward one-on-one communication to understand customers’ requirements and fulfill their needs to the best of one’s capabilities.

Nothing Can Nurture Your Hair Like Natural Ingredients

Forget about all commercial products that claim to nurture your hair. There is no way to change the texture of your hair follicles; however, there are many natural ingredients that can reduce breakage and hair loss.

Thinning hair is a common condition among both men and women that is caused by a number of reasons, including natural aging, genetics, poor nutrition, overuse of commercial hair products, and illness. Hence, it is important to solve the underlying problems through natural effective treatments. In this article, we will share with you a range of natural ingredients that will enrich the quality and thickness of your hair.

Protein is one of the best ingredients that promote hair growth, thickness, and strength. To use an egg treatment, whisk two eggs in a bowl and apply on clean dry hair. Leave the mask for half an hour then rinse well with cold water. You can also add one tablespoon of olive oil and two tablespoons of water.

Repeat this procedure a few times a week until you witness change.

Coconut oil is another source of protein that can add strength naturally. To use coconut oil, massage some warm coconut oil into the scalp and cover with a hot towel so that the oil stays heated while penetrating the hair shaft. Leave this recipe for thirty minutes and then wash with a shampoo. Do this twice a week.

Vitamin C, pectin, and acid in oranges can enhance hair’s natural luster, promote thicker hair, and break apart residues left from hair products that act as barrier to hair growth. Simply, peel an orange and put it into a food processor until you have a fine pulp.

Leave the orange puree for about an hour then wash thoroughly. You can do this treatment twice a week.

Rich in minerals and nutrients, the creamy fruit is a miraculous beautifying ingredient for both your health and your skin. Avocados promote hair growth and add healthy volume and shine. Mash an avocado and mix with a tablespoon of olive oil. Apply on hair and let sit for half an hour and then rinse thoroughly with mild shampoo.

THE EPITOME OF MERCY & COMPASSION

I

magine a world where everyone gives out a helping hand to those in need; where compassion, love, and mercy take over. Though it may sound like a Utopia, there will always be someone who makes us believe that they can change things around us. Coming from her strong belief in the act of giving, Heba Elsewedy, a philanthropist and a humanitarian with a strong vision to reform the healthcare sector in Egypt, founded Ahl Masr with an aim to give back to the community by helping hundreds of burn victims and trying to change how the society treats them. With limitless ambitions and big dreams, Heba knows it in her heart that her life purpose is to fight for this cause and spread acts of kindness not only in Egypt, but also all over the world.

1.FROM LEADING ONE OF EGYPT’S LARGEST ORGANIZATIONS TO EMBARKING ON A HUMANITARIAN PATH, WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN BETWEEN? Upon my graduation I founded my own business, Arabian French Textiles Co., and at some point I decided to take a break from the corporate life to dedicate more time for my 3 kids. Along the way, I had a feeling that my life should have a higher purpose. Not that I wasn’t happy, I’m a very grateful and content person, but I felt the urge of giving more. The whole journey started back during the 25th of January revolution when I began personally help curing the injured people out of a humanitarian aspect not putting in consideration any political background or ideology. Eventually, this opened my eyes on many things, it made me realize that this is my purpose in life; I want to give back to the community, I want to give a helping hand to those in need. I got committed to being there for people who need help, and together we built a unique bond of human compassion. This is when I began to experience the beauty of the act of giving. To me, giving isn’t only about financial support, but rather emotional and psychological support; to share one another’s pains and try helping each other passing through any traumas.

During that time and as I’ve been personally involved and our team members have become known, I’ve received cases of burn victims that weren’t necessarily related to the revolution calling out for help, even including children and it was then I decided to start an entity that supports burn victims.

2.COULD YOU PLEASE TELL US MORE ABOUT AHL MASR AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE BURN VICTIMS IN SPECIFIC? I got introduced to Dr. Amr Mabrook then, and I’ve learnt more about the physical and psychological problems that burn victims undergo. By the beginning of 2013, I founded Ahl Masr, a nongovernmental organization for social development.

We began by supporting and funding the treatment of many medical cases including cardiac surgeries for children, vision loss, and a lot more. Among these cases; burn victims had a noticeably higher rate. I’ve conducted a thorough research and realized that tens of thousands of people in Egypt lose their lives every year because of burn incidents.

In addition, current beds in hospitals around Egypt cannot accommodate the number of burn victims every year. As a team, we decided

it was about time to establish a hospital for burn victims. I then met the Minister of Housing and Urban Development and with great support he helped us bring this project into life. Back to the part of your question of why burn victims in specific; because it is a field that no one has decided to tackle before and bearing in mind also the criticality of these cases. A patient of burn accident may also need to stay in intensive care for several months, needless to mention the numerous operations and surgical procedures required to help save the patients’ organs from damage and to avoid amputations per say. So treating these cases requires a long process and dedication, plus let’s be honest the traumas that these victims face after such incidents definitely require psychological help as well, and we take responsibility of that as well.

Burn victims, unlike any other medical conditions, feel a lot of pressure with the society and many lose their jobs for a fate that they didn’t choose, others may not be able to continue with their education, and it is our duty to help these people find their way back to their normal lives.

3.WHAT WERE THE OBSTACLES YOU’VE FACED TO BRING THIS PROJECT INTO BEING? The main challenge for me was to spread awareness about who we are and what we do, especially that we were still a young foundation among other huge organizations. We wanted to make sure there’s awareness of our cause, and that our voice is heard.

I’m very grateful and blessed to be where we are today, especially that we have integrated ourselves in USA as well. I owe all of this to the brilliant team members who work together as a family, who are believers in the cause and dedicate their time and effort to give back to the society in a genuine heartfelt manner. An amazing team of dedicated and persistent people who work day and night thinking, planning, and executing charity events and marketing campaigns to bring our dream into life.

4.IN YOUR OPINION WHAT DOES OUR SOCIETY LACK THE MOST? Awareness; there are so many epidemics, diseases and accidents’ consequence that can be prevented if

we have enough awareness on prevention and treatment. Additionally, what is really hope to do more, is giving back to the community.

5.IF YOU CAN USE YOUR INFLUENCE TO CHANGE SOMETHING IN THE WORLD OR TO ADD SOMETHING WHAT WOULD IT BE? I would love that Ahl Masr becomes an epitome of humanitarian act all over the globe. I believe that we are not far from being like the UNICEF and other foundations; I want the whole world to believe in our message of compassion.

6.WHEN HAVE YOU FELT MOST SATISFIED AND ACCOMPLISHED IN YOUR LIFE? Never to be honest; I’m content and grateful, yes, but also I’m always looking for more. I dream big, and no matter how far I reach, I believe there’s still a lot more to be accomplished.

7.WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 HUMAN VALUES? Mercy, honesty, and humility.

8.WHO OR WHAT IS YOUR SOURCE OF INSPIRATION? People with special needs, the amount of persistence and strength they push themselves with to go beyond their capabilities is a true inspiration, they don’t believe in the word ‘impossible’. It also goes without saying that my parents are my idols, I look up to them, and they have always inspired me to become the person I am today.

9.WHAT’S YOUR LIFE PHILOSOPHY? Be strong but sweet and kind, let mercy fill your heart. Never allow anything or anyone to break you, have faith in yourself and always believe that you are very special.

Be determined, persistent, and chase your dreams, but also set your priorities in life and remember that family comes first.

Have you ever asked yourself what is the one common goal for humans on earth?

The answer here is one word…” HAPPINESS” Everyone wants to feel happy. Everyone wakes up every morning hoping that he will experience a happy day!

However,the trick comes when we start doubting and questioning whether we are really happy or not in the first place. WHY? Because when circumstances and events are to our liking, we are happy, and when they are not, we feel miserable.

For many people,happiness is like a moving target.

They might think that they will be happy by having a certain amount of possessions or a certain status.

But then they find out that that’s not the case. Or they might feel happy about it, but only for a moment and then comes again the feeling of being indifferent or feeling empty from inside.

But let me tell you the good news!

Happiness is actually available for you now. You don’t need to wait until next year or even tomorrow to have it. It’s already there. The fact is, you already have everything you need to be happy; you don’t need anything else.

Want to know how can we have it?

By simply being content with our lives.

Being content doesn’t mean being stagnant. It doesn’t mean just staying where you are. You must still strive to be the best person that you can be. You must still aim to go to the next level. But you don’t need any of those promotions to be satisfied with your life. Your happiness doesn’t depend on them.

In order to be content with what you already have, you need to become aware of what you already have. Most of us are so focused on the future that we rarely stop to appreciate what’s right in front of our eyes. Instead, be willing to open your mind to the good things that are already happening in your life. One way to create more awareness is to list things you’re grateful for every day.

You need to find and feel inner peace within yourself, and to be fully aware and convinced that no person, or situation can have a say on whether you shall be living happy or not. Of course, these things do matter and can definitely affect your state of mind and behaviors; however, when you are aware that only you can have say to define how your situations can be managed, then you are on the right track to inner peace.

Experience the beauty of patience. Patience is about letting things unfold in their own time. If you allow yourself compassion and patience, you will see that you already have everything you need to be content with your life. Sometimes we rush into things or make impulsive decisions because we’re afraid of missing out. Take the pressure off yourself by giving yourself some breathing room.

Step away from seeking answers and let them come. Sometimes you have to trust the process and believe that you’ll get where you need to be (even if you don’t know how).

Everything you need to be happy is within you. There is just lack of enlightenment and that is why you haven’t noticed.

We are truly powerful human beings. So use your time wisely and don’t let time use you.

MOUTHWATERING RAMADAN RECIPES TO INDULGE IN

SPICED GOAT AND RICE BIRYANI: Yields: 4 dishes INGREDIENTS: • 2 lb. bone-in goat shoulder or beef chuck, cut into 2” cubes • 2 cups basmati rice, soaked in cold water and drained • 2 cups plain yogurt • 1 cup cilantro, roughly chopped • 1/2 cup mint leaves • 1 1/2 cups canola oil • 1⁄4 cup fresh lemon juice • 2 large gold onions, thinly sliced • 5 cloves garlic • 6 dried apricots, quartered • 20 whole black peppercorns • 4 whole garlic cloves • 6 bay leaves • 5 small chilli, stemmed • 1 ginger, peeled and sliced • 2 tbsp. ground coriander • 2 tbsp. turmeric • 2 sticks cinnamon, broken in half • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste DIRECTIONS: • In a food processor, mix cilantro, mint, garlic, chilli, ginger, and ¼ cup water until puree; set 44 | MAY 2018

• In a 12” skillet, heat ½ cup oil over medium heat, and then add one sliced onions. Cook for about 15 minutes or until caramelized. Using a slotted spoon, transfer to paper towels to drain and set aside.

• Heat remaining oil in a saucepan over mediumhigh heat. Add the remaining sliced onion and cook until golden brown. Season goat with salt and pepper; add to the pan. Cook until browned, about 10 minutes. Add reserved paste, ground coriander, half each of the peppercorns, cloves, bay, and cinnamon. Cook until paste is caramelized.

• Reduce heat to medium, add yogurt and leave for about 1½ hours or until tender. Add apricots and cook until tender for anther 10 minutes. Stir in lemon juice seasoned with salt and pepper.

• In a small saucepan, heat remaining peppercorns, cloves, bay, and cinnamon over medium-high heat until fragrant. Add rice, salt, turmeric, and 4 cups water; bring to a boil.

• Reduce heat to low; cook rice until al dente. Drain rice, and set aside.

• In a pot, spoon half of the rice followed by half the curry and repeat again with the remaining halves. Sprinkle with half the fried onions and cook for another 8-10 minutes.

EGGPLANT TOPPED WITH GARLIC YOGURT: Yields: 8 Pieces INGREDIENTS: • 4 eggplants • ¼ cup oil • 1 Maggi Chicken Bouillon, dissolved • ½ cup Yogurt • 3 tbsp. milk • 4 garlic cloves, minced • 1 onion, cut into small cubes and fried • ¼ pomegranate • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

KNAFEH WITH CHEESE: Yields: 10 pieces INGREDIENTS: • 1 lb. Kataif, crumbled • 1 lb. whole-milk ricotta • 2 cups unsalted butter, melted • ¼ cup minced pistachios • ½ cup of whole-cream milk • 1 cup sugar • 3 tbsp. semolina • 2 tsp. lemon juice DIRECTIONS: • In a saucepan, boil ½ cup of water and sugar for two minutes to make a syrup. Stir in juice; set syrup aside.

DIRECTIONS: • On a kitchen board, cut four large eggplants length-wise into wedges. Pat dry.

• In a frying pan, heat oil then deep fry the eggplant wedges until golden brown. Drain any excess oil.

• In an oven tray, arrange eggplant and season with salt and pepper. Pour dissolved Maggi Chicken Bouillon over them.

• Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 15-20 minutes and remove from oven.

• Meanwhile, mix ½-cup yogurt, three tablespoon milk, and four cloves minced garlic in a bowl, then sprinkle all over the eggplant.

• Garnish with fried onions and pomegranate.

• In a saucepan, boil milk and semolina; whisk until slightly thickened or for 2 minutes. Whisk in ricotta; set mixture aside.

• Heat oven to 350°. Lightly grease a 9” x 13” baking dish. Toss kataif and butter in a bowl until absorbed. Spread half into the bottom of the dish.

Pour ricotta mixture evenly over kataif and then top with remaining kataif. Press firmly.

• Bake until crisp and golden for about 1 - 1 1⁄2 hours. Let cool to room temperature. Transfer cake to a serving platter. Spoon syrup over the top and sprinkle with pistachios or any preferred type of nuts.

In the Egyptian culture, people have several constraints on seeking professional help and making the choice to go to couples counseling can feel like a very big step. It involves admitting that things are not perfect in your relationship, which is often tough to do and scary to admit. And if you are not particularly familiar with what therapy is all about, it can feel 46 | MAY 2018

mysterious and confusing. Our culture has always been highlighting the “happily ever after” bright side of marriage, but are couples really equipped with the right tools to manage the challenges and conflicts of their relationships?

Marriage counseling is a positive indication that marital problems that were once concealed and contained behind closed doors and endured in silence, mainly by women, are no longer accepted, nor viewed as shameful taboos, as once believed to be. Also marriage counselors act independently with

no biased solutions, which mostly put the blame, responsibility and the burden to salvage the marriage on the shoulders of women.

At what point should you consider marriage counseling? Here are 10 trigger points and behaviors that are signs you may need help: 1. YOU’RE BARELY SPEAKING. Many relationship challenges are simply challenges in communication. A counselor can help facilitate new ways to communicate with each other in the right direction.

2. YOU QUARREL CONSTANTLY. Negative communication includes anything that leaves one partner feeling judged, shamed, disregarded, insecure or wanting to withdraw from the conversation.

3. AFFECTION IS WITHHELD AS PUNISHMENT. Getting angry over small things and then withholding affection and giving the silent treatment. If one partner starts to act as a “parent” or “punisher,” starving the other of actual love as a weapon, there is a lack of balance in the relationship.

4. YOU START KEEPING SECRETS. Each person in a relationship has a right to privacy, but when you keep secrets from each other, something isn’t right.

5. YOU’RE HAVING AN AFFAIR. Being in an affair is a sign that you desire something different from what you currently have.

While it is possible for a relationship to survive after one partner has had an affair, it’s crucial to get some help before that happens.
