Editor’s letter Mentors For the greatest part of my life, when I read or heard the word mentor, the picture that came to my mind was that of an old wise man with a great deal of knowledge who passed on his experience in life and his valued opinions to others. But one day, all of this changed. It changed due to a sudden realization that anybody can be a mentor. It occurred to me that many people took the role of mentors in my life. Surprisingly enough, that happened without their intention of being my mentors and at the same time without awareness on my part that I was in the middle of a quick or a simple learning process. It struck me to know that a friend of mine, for instance, was a mentor to me when through her actions and her lifestyle, she showed me -involuntarily- how a person can have problems but still be capable of having fun anyway, anytime and anywhere. Others were mentors to me when their love of life made them forget all what they had been through in the past, no matter how difficult it was. They made me see life from a different perspective; a better one. Just with their beautiful genuine smiles, cheerful people gave me a lesson on how sincere smiles -even to people you don’t knowcan work miracles. As for the persistent ones, they taught me how to be a fighter, how to insist on what I want as long as it’s correct, and how not to be afraid to say no when it’s my right to say it. Examples of mentors in my life are endless. Almost all of them don’t even know that I’ve given them the rank of mentors. Try to be a mentor! You’ll never be one by preaching people and lecturing them on what’s right and what’s wrong. Your actions, your reactions, your thoughts and your lifestyle are much more powerful. They can make you a mentor to others or they can deprive you of that title. Whether to be a mentor or not is your choice, exactly as it is your choice whether or not to watch people around you and learn from them. I am and will always be proud to admit that I learn from others and that I consider many people who might be less educated or younger than me my mentors. And to all those mentors, I say thank you! Special thanks to my mentor at Ladybird, Coki Coussa

Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Coco Chanel, so when going for a workout or a casual outing, remember, fashion is all around you. Designers made it easy by creating the sexiest and most creative designs to encourage all women to work out looking fabulous and inspired.

forget accessories when working out. You can always wear a nice headband that will help keep your hair looking great during the whole workout. Don’t forget to wear earrings, they have to be something you are comfortable with, small and light not to hurt you during the workout. Tip: Wearing silver or gold will prevent any skin allergies during a workout.

Hair: Most women have a problem in styling their hair for a workout and end up going with the same look every time. Here are a couple of fabulous ideas for you to try, complete your fashion diva look and work out comfortably. September 2013 | 11

I always want to look perfect even during exercising, and wearing no makeup at all is not an option for me. In this case, what are the suitable makeup options?

It’s always better to look natural in your work outs and at the same time let your skin breathe, but if wearing makeup is a must for you, then at least don’t over do it. If you’re exercising outdoors in the morning, apply a tinted sunscreen or a waterproof sun protection spray under your makeup. Generally, makeup worn during exercise should be oil-free so that your skin can breathe. Oil-based products tend to trap the sweat under your makeup, which can cause it to smear. Skip the heavy foundation and opt for a lightweight, oil-free tinted moisturizer. Use: Banana Boat Sport Performance SPF 30, Clinique Super City Block Oil-Free Daily Face Protector SPF 40, Clarins Sunscreen Care Oil-Free Lotion Spray SPF 15, Bobbi Brown Tinted Moisturizer Oil Free Broad Spectrum SPF 15, or Laura Mercier OilFree Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20. Wear waterproof mascara. Use: Lancôme Hypnôse Waterproof Custom Volume Mascara, Diorshow Waterproof Mascara, or Maybelline Lash Discovery Mini-Brush Waterproof Mascara. To give your cheeks some color (don’t over do it though since your cheeks may turn red from working out), use a powder blush. Many cream blushes contain oil, which can clog pores and result in breakouts. Use: Lancôme Blush Subtil Delicate Oil-Free Powder Blush, Clinique Blushing Blush Powder Blush, or Estée Lauder ‘Pure Color Pure Pop Collection’ Powder Blush. For the lips, go for lip products that have SPF, won’t rub off and aren’t too intense. It’s also recommended to choose light shades. Use: Maybelline New York SuperStay 10HR Stain Gloss, MAC Pro Longwear Lipglass, Labello Glamorous Gloss Pink Sugar, or ‘Pure Sheer’ Lip Treatment SPF 15.

Beauty

Pampered Yourself in Summer? Now, It’s Your Skin’s Turn!

W

hile your skin is a living organ that constantly regenerates itself, the right care can improve its support, elasticity, and shine. That’s why it needs special care especially after summer. To protect itself from the damaging effects of the sun, your skin increases its production of the dark brown pigment called melanin. The extra melanin makes your skin look darker or sun-tanned. In some cases, the sun causes an uneven increase in melanin production, which produces irregular coloring or pigmentation of the skin. The sun can also cause a permanent stretching (dilation) of small blood vessels, giving your skin a mottled, reddish appearance.

By: Nermine Tarek Oriflame Beauty Expert & Makeup artist

Summer Care During summer time we have to use sun protection, the degree of SPF is decided based on the color of your skin. Darker skin gets lower SPF and lighter skin gets higher SPF. The after sun is a necessity to be used after the exposure to the sun as it has calming and hydrating properties and sometimes it helps keeping your tanned color shimmery and glowing.

After Summer Care The skin becomes thirsty for hydration and moisturizing which means you have to go back to your daily skin routine.

Daily Routine 1st Step: Cleanser For the dry skin, the cleanser has to be milky to clean and to keep the skin moist. For the oily skin, the cleanser has to be a foaming gel to eliminate the excess oil from the skin.

2nd Step: Toner It is very important especially for the oily skin as it tightens the skin and stimulates the blood circulation.

3rd Step: Day Cream For the dry skin, the cream has to be oil based as it needs more nourishing and hydration and for the oily skin, the cream has to water based as it has to be oil free and the day cream has to contain SPF.

4th Step: Night Cream The night cream is very important as it is responsible for the renewal of the skin cells which helps the skin to be more glowing and fresh looking in the morning.

Weekly routine Scrub: It eliminates all the dead cells from the top layer of the skin and renews the cells in the skin.

Mask: For dry skin, you need a nourishing mask with antioxidant properties and for oily skin, the mask must contain ingredients that eliminate the excess oil in the skin.

The skin texture differs from age to age, so you have to change and adjust your skin care routine based on the needs of your skin. • In the 20s, you have to focus on hydration and moisturization with light textured creams with SPF. • In the 30s, the early age signs start to appear especially around the eyes so you have to use creams with collagen to replump the wrinkles. • In the 40s, the wrinkles start to get deeper and the dark spots become more visible. You have to use high SPF and special creams that treat wrinkles and dark spots. • Scrubbing in the 30s and the 40s is very important to renew the skin cells. • In the 50s and up, the skin becomes very dry even if it was oily skin in the youth so you have to use heavy creams and provide your skin with deep nourishing and moisturization.

Her mother is a jewellery designer as well and she designs jewellery up to the present day. Nour was born to an Egyptian/Swiss mother and a Sudanese/Lebanese father and she grew up in many cities which exposed her to different cultures, designs, tastes, and styles that are reflected in her fashion choices. Jolandie Rust

First Female Touring Africa On A Motorbike We managed to get hold of Jolandie Rust during her presence in Egypt as part of her circumnavigation tour to the African content. Jolandie Rust is a 29 year old South African female biker whohas ridden about 27,000 kilometers through 20 countries over a period of about 7 months. She started her trip on 7th of April 2012 from Cape Agulhas (the most southern point of Africa). So far she has traveled through Namibia, Angola, Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, Morocco, Spain, France, Italy, Tunisia, Libya, and now she is in Egypt. Jolandie has always wanted to do something big with her life. She never knew what that was until end of 2007 when she finally decided to be the first woman to travel around the entire African continent on her own. Jolandie explains that at first the idea seemed improbable, maybe even insane. But she believes that nothing is impossible. Her philosophy is that one only gets to live this life once, so there’s no holding back. And if you can dream it, you can do it. Before entering the world of motorbikes, Jolandie started out with cycling and she was the first person to cycle around South Africa, solo. After her cycling trip, she decided to do it once again, but this time on a motorbike.

I’ve now made it all the way to the amazing country that is Egypt.

Jolandie Rust

About her trip and her future plans, Jolandie says, “On April 2012, I set out from Cape Town to fulfill my dream of becoming the first woman to ride around the entire African continent on my motorbike, solo. After I have completed my tour around Africa, I aim to become the first African female to compete in the Dakar Rally in 2015.” Jolandie always dreams big and shoots for the stars. She loves the outdoors and she has passion for exploration. Her hobbies include playing the guitar, singing, cooking, trying adventure sports, camping, watching movies, reading, and learning new languages.

I was born a dreamer. I don’t subscribe to society’s rules and have always believed in possibility. If you can dream it you can do it.

Dr. James Henning Anesthesiology

Q1: What are the exercises that improve cardio respiratory fitness? Doctor’s Answer: Aerobic activity and exercises that improve the body’s ability to take in, pump and deliver life-sustaining oxygen throughout the body. Brisk walking, jogging and running, swimming, cycling, plyometric (jumping) movements involving large muscle groups, yoga involving continuous movement and isometric contraction, martial arts... these increase blood flow, intake of oxygen and heart pumping action.

Dr. Jay C. Bradley

Cornea, Cataract and Refractive (Lasik & PRK) Surgery

Q2:Right eye tears up every morning then clears for rest of the day, what could be the cause? Doctor’s answer: This may be nocturnal lagophthalmos which means that the one eye is staying partially open, dries out, and then develops reflex tearing in the morning. Try using overthe-counter ointment.

Dr. Lonna Larsh Family Medicine

Q3: Is there such a thing as eating too much fruit? Doctor’s answer: Yes. People with high blood sugar need to limit their sugars from all sources, even fruits. In addition, eating too much fruit can sometimes cause bloating, gas and diarrhea. Moderation in all things is the key.

Dr. Joseph S. Eastern Dermatology

I stepped on a dirty nail, what should I do? Doctor’s answer: Your absolute top priority is to get a tetanus shot if you haven’t had one in the last 5-10 years. Tetanus is not something you ever want to have. Beyond that, the wound needs to be thoroughly cleaned, then observed in case an infection develops. In short, you need to see a doctor. 36 | September 2013

Ladies, Know the Reasons to See Your Doctor! Most of us call a doctor when we know we’re sick, but we’re not sure if we need to call for particular symptoms. How high of a fever is too high? Should you call about the pain in your chest? Here’s my list of the eight reasons to see your doctor, and how soon you ought to seek help.

1. Fever of more than 38 °C

If you have a fever of more than 38 °C, especially if you have other symptoms, like diarrhea, vomiting, sore throat, or flu-like symptoms, you should definitely phone your doctor. A prolonged high fever means there’s something seriously wrong, something that may need to be treated right away. Don’t ignore it! And don’t wait until office hours - call NOW!

2. Unexpected bleeding If you notice blood in your stool or in your urine, of if you’re experiencing bleeding between your normal periods, you need to make an appointment to see your doctor right away, especially if you’re experiencing pain or difficulty urinating. Blood in your urine can signal a urinary tract infection or kidney stones, and among other things, blood in your stool can mean you have a polyp or hemorrhoids. Bleeding between periods can mean many things, so it’s a good idea to call your doctor if you notice any sort of unusual bleeding.

3. Unexplained weight loss or gain Slight weight fluctuations are normal, and if you’re dieting, or have recently stopped dieting, they’re to be expected. But any weight loss or weight gain that you can’t explain may be a sign of trouble. Call your doctor and schedule an appointment.

4. Dizziness or fainting If you’re suddenly feeling lightheaded or dizzy, or if you’re fainting or blacking out without explanation (like excessive drinking), then you definitely want to schedule an appointment with your doctor. Dizziness can mean something as simple to fix as dehydration, or it can mean something else, like a sudden, dangerous drop in blood pressure or something worse… so call your doctor and describe your symptoms. They may want to see you right away!

A woman’s health is her capital.

5. Thoughts of suicide

7. Changes in, or growth of, moles

There are many prescription anti-depressants and pain killers that have a horrible, sometimes deadly side effect: suicidal thoughts. If you’re having thoughts of suicide, whether you’re taking a prescription drug or not, please seek help immediately. Don’t wait! Call your doctor right away!

If you notice any changes in any of your moles, or any odd places on your skin, then you must call your doctor and schedule an appointment, especially if you’ve ever had bad sunburn. Most skin cancers are very treatable when detected early, so time is of the essence. Again, early detection of a problem can save your life!

6. Discovery of a lump

8. Chest pain

Once a woman reaches puberty, it’s time to start doing a monthly self breast exam the week after their period ends. If, during your exam, you discover a lump, no matter how small, you must report it to your doctor as soon as you can. In fact, a lump can be anywhere, not just on your breast, so if you ever find a lump, call your doctor and have it examined. Don’t feel foolish or embarrassed, it could save your life!

If you’re experiencing chest pain, especially in conjunction with shortness of breath or tingling or numbness in your limbs, or a feeling of pressure on your chest, you must contact a doctor as soon as possible, because you may be having a heart attack. Symptoms vary wildly from patient to patient, but the fact remains the same, that most of these symptoms can mean a heart attack. Get help immediately!

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you ought to seek help from a doctor soon, and immediately if it’s chest pain or a high fever. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

You’d Better Not Be Stressed Out!

tress symptoms may be affecting your health, even though you might not realize it. You may think illness is to blame for that nagging headache, your frequent insomnia or your decreased productivity at work. But stress may actually be the culprit.

Common effects of stress... ... on your body • Headache • Muscle tension or pain • Chest pain • Fatigue • Change in sex drive • Stomach upset • Sleep problems 40 | September 2013

... on your mood •Anxiety •Restlessness •Lack of motivation or focus •Irritability or anger •Sadness or depression

... on your behavior •Overeating or undereating •Angry outbursts •Drug or alcohol abuse •Tobacco use •Social withdrawal

Here’s A Sampling Of The Most Significant Health Problems Related To Stress

Stress Busters In order to cope with their stress, many people look to things that are not only ineffective but also unhealthy. Negative stress-management techniques include drinking alcohol, denying the problem, taking drugs, overeating, smoking cigarettes and angry behavior. Instead of these harmful techniques, why not try one of the following:

• Breathe deeply. Just a few minutes of deep breathing can calm you and tame the physiologic stress response. As you breathe out, you relax a specific muscle group. Start with the muscles in your jaw. On the next breath out, relax your shoulders. Move through the different areas of your body until you're feeling calm. • Focus on the moment. When you're stressed, you're probably living in the future or the past. You're worried about what to do next or regretful about something you've already done. To get some stress relief, instead try focusing on what you're doing right now. For example, if you're eating, focus on the taste and the sensation of the food. • Take a nap. 30 to 40 minutes' downtime will recharge your batteries. • Get a massage. Visit a professional massage therapist or ask a friend or partner.

• Headaches. Stress is considered one of the most common triggers for headaches, not just tension headaches, but migraines as well. • Gastrointestinal problems. Stress doesn't cause ulcers. However, it can make them worse. Stress is also a common factor in many other GI conditions, such as chronic heartburn (GERD) and IBS. • Alzheimer's disease. One animal study found that stress might worsen Alzheimer's disease, causing its brain lesions to form more quickly. Some researchers speculate that reducing stress has the potential to slow down the progression of the disease. • Accelerated aging. There's actually evidence that stress can affect how you age. Researchers found that a particular region of the chromosomes showed the effects of accelerated aging in people who were under high stress. Stress seemed to accelerate aging about 9 to 17 additional years.

Stress is nothing more than a socially acceptable form of mental illness.

Richard Carlson

• Heart disease. Researchers have long suspected that the stressed-out, tense personality has a higher risk of high blood pressure and heart problems. Stress might have a direct effect on the heart and blood vessels. It's also possible that stress is related to other problems - smoking or obesity - that indirectly increase the heart risks. • Asthma. Many studies have shown that stress can worsen asthma. Moreover, one study looked at how parental stress affected the asthma rates of young children who were also exposed to air pollution or whose mothers smoked during pregnancy. The kids with stressed out parents had a substantially higher risk of developing asthma. • Obesity. Excess fat in the belly seems to pose greater health risks than fat on the legs or hips, and unfortunately, that's just where people with high stress seem to store it. • Diabetes. Stress can worsen diabetes in two ways. First, it increases the likelihood of bad behaviors, such as unhealthy eating and excessive drinking. Second, stress seems to raise the glucose levels of people with type 2 diabetes directly.

• Express yourself artistically. Divert your energies into something creative, such as acting, playing an instrument, writing poetry or singing. • Have a laugh. Not only will it make you feel better, it will make you look better too. • Be gentle to yourself. We talk to ourselves all the time, even though we're not aware of it. This ‘self-talk’ determines our attitudes and self-image, so try to change both with a bit of positive chatter. • Reframe the situation. So you're already running late and then find yourself stuck in terrible traffic. Getting worked up is a natural reaction, but it won't help you at all. Rather than swearing and pounding the steering wheel, get a different perspective. Look at that time as an opportunity, a few minutes to yourself where you don't have any other obligations. • Keep your problems in perspective. It might seem pollyannaish, but the next time you're feeling stressed out, think about the things for which you're grateful.

• Meditation, contemplation and relaxation techniques. • Regular exercise September 2013 | 41

Pedal for Better Health

Although almost all of us had ridden bikes when we were little kids, very few of us continued to ride them till we became adults. If you’re among the majority who don’t bike anymore, this article will most probably make you change your mind. And for a lot of reasons!

For more info about biking groups in Egypt, check these facebook groups: • GBI Egypt Team • Wheelers World Discovery • MTB Egypt • Bescletta

Cycling is a low-impact type of exercise, so it’s easier on your joints than running or other high-impact aerobic activities. But it still helps you get into shape. For example, someone who weighs 80kg will burn more than 650 calories with an hour’s riding, and tone their legs and bottom. If you ride up hills or off-road, you’ll also work your upper body. Cycling is also a healthy exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from young children to older adults. It gives your heart, blood vessels and lungs a good workout. It is also fun, cheap and good for the environment. Besides, you will breathe deeper, perspire and experience increased body temperature, which will improve your overall fitness level.

Cycling is SIMPLE It only takes two to four hours a week to achieve a general improvement to your health. Cycling is: • Low impact: it causes less strain and injuries than most other forms of exercise. • Easy: unlike some other sports, cycling does not require high levels of physical skill. Most people know how to ride a bike and, once you learn, you don’t forget. • As intense as you want: cycling can be done at very low intensity to begin with, if recovering from injury or illness, but can be built up to a demanding physical workout. • A fun way to get fit: the adventure of being outdoors means you are more likely to continue to cycle regularly, compared to other physical activities that keep you indoors or require special times or places. 42 | September 2013

Cycling

Why?

Tones you all over Cyclists are notorious for having killer legs. After all, the quads, glutes, and calves are propelling the bike. But working the handlebar sculpts your upper body too, giving you balanced tone, says Erik Moen, a physical therapist who treats elite athletes.

Boosts your energy Feeling sluggish? A study published in the journal Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics found that bike riding improved energy levels by 20% and decreased fatigue by 65%. Why? Cycling triggers your brain to release the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is linked to energy, says lead author Patrick O’Connor, Ph.D., a professor of kinesiology at the University of Georgia at Athens. There’s no need to ride hard to harness the perk. People in the study who pedaled at a low to moderate pace three times a week fought fatigue best.

Good for the heart Cycling is associated with improved cardiovascular fitness, as well as a decrease in the risk of coronary heart disease.

Builds stamina Cycling builds your stamina even without your knowledge as once you start enjoying it you do not realise that you have gone further than original capacity.

Reduces stress Cycling outside is a good way to be one with nature. It helps you to clear your head and makes you feel better.

A good muscle workout Cycling uses all of the major muscle groups as you pedal. Cycling has been shown to get you fitter than walking, as it lifts your heart rate to a more beneficial level.

Improves body co-ordination As you cycle more and more, your body starts synchronising the moves and your arm to leg, and body to eye co-ordination improves.

Melts body fat If you are on the heavier side, cycling can help you reduce weight. You can burn a lot of calories while biking, especially when you cycle faster than a leisurely pace. And cycling has the added benefit of ramping up your metabolism, even after the ride is over.

Plus, it’s environment friendly! Six Point Safety Check Before You Ride: 1. Check your tires. Are they in good shape? Are they the right pressure? 2. Check the wheels. Do they spin freely? 3. Check the lights. Do they work? Are the reflectors secure? 4. Check the brakes. Are they too stiff or too loose? 5. Check the seat and handlebars. Are they properly adjusted? Are they comfortable? 6. Check the fit. Are you comfortable? Have good control? Attention! While riding, always wear a bike helmet. Stay hydrated. Carry a bottle of water with you. Sip a little water at regular intervals.

Fewer Curves from Home

S

ay, hypothetically, that you were not allowed to leave your home anymore. Say that you could not reach your gym (I know‌ what a scary thought, right?) What would you do? I can hear your stomach answer: put on a few pounds. Well no, this is not an option!

No gym, no problem. You can still squat and jump 1. Begin by standing up with your feet hip-width apart, arms by your sides. Remember to keep a safe posture for your back. That is, pull your shoulder blades down and engage your core muscles to brace your spine. 2. You will squat before jumping and this is how the downward phase goes. Shift your hips back and down. This will create a hinge-like movement at your knees. Continue to lower yourself until you feel your heels about to lift off the floor. Try to maintain a flat back by bending forward at the hips. Keep your head directly facing forward and position your arms where they offer the greatest degree of balance support. 3. You will then jump, which is the upward phase. After a brief pause at the bottom of your downward phase, gather all the strength in your lower body, fully extending your hips, knees and ankles. As you jump into the air, try to keep your feet level with each other and parallel with the floor. 4. Gravity will bring you back to earth and this is the landing phase. The most important part of this phase are correct foot position and avoiding excessive forward movement in your lower extremity, which places additional stress on your knees. Tips: try to land softly and quietly on the mid-foot, rolling into the heels. Always push your 46 | September 2013

hips back and down to absorb the impact of landing. Do not lock out your knees on your landing. Also, land with your trunk slightly forward, head aligned with your spine and back rigid or flat. Keep your core muscles engaged, bracing your torso to protect your spine.

by: NatasciPaolucci Professional Fitness Coach

You can still hold a plank 1. For this exercise, you will be lying on your stomach on the floor with your elbows close to your sides and directly under your shoulders, palms down and fingers facing forward. Engage your core muscles. It should feel like you are tightening a corset around your ribs, waist and lower torso. Contract your thigh muscles to straighten your legs strongly and flex your ankles, (tucking your toes towards your shins). 2. Then you will push yourself upwards. Slowly lift your torso and thighs off the floor or mat. Keep your torso and legs rigid. Do not allow any sagging in your ribcage or low back. Avoid hiking your hips into the air or bending the knees. Keep the shoulders away from the ears (no shrugging). The shoulders should be directly over your elbows with your palms facing down through the entire exercise. Tip: Be sure to continue to breathe, keeping the abdominals strong while holding this position. Try holding this position for 5 seconds (or more). 3. Eventually, you will be landing back on the floor. Keep the torso and legs stiff as you slowly and gently lower your body back towards the floor. If you experience any pain in the low back with this movement, stop the exercise immediately.>> September 2013 | 47

You can still push yourself up 1. This time, you will be starting on your hands and knees (quadruped) on the floor with your hands di rectly under your shoulders; fingers facing forward, or slightly inward and knees under your hips. Engage the abdominals and pull the shoulder blades down your back. 2. Then, you will be lifting your knees off the floor. Reach one leg out and away followed by the other leg, bringing you to the plank position discussed previously. Keep the core engaged to brace the torso. Remember that your head should be aligned with your spine. Your feet are together with your toes tucked under and your heels reaching toward the wall behind you. 3. After you hold the position for a couple of seconds, slowly bend the elbows, lowering your body toward the floor. Keep the torso rigid and the head aligned with your spine. Do not allow your low back or ribcage to sag or your hips to hike upward. Engage your butt (glutes) and thigh (quadriceps) muscles to help maintain stability and a rigid body. Try to lower yourself until your chest or chin touch the mat or floor. Your elbows should stay close to the sides of your body or be allowed to flare outwards slightly. 48 | September 2013

4. Now is when the fun begins and you will be trying to fight gravity. Press upward through your arms, straightening the elbows. Keep the torso rigid and head aligned with your spine. Imagine pushing the floor away from you. Do not allow your low back to sag or your hips to hike upward, as doing so may hurt your back. To add in some cardio workout, try aligning the exercises. Squat, jump, hold plank and then push. Repeatedly. Note that I deliberately detailed the processes so that you would be able to perform the exercises as correctly as possible on your own. The techniques are not particularly involved but a wrong move could easily result in an injury. This is why you should start slow. Try every exercise separately until you master it. Only then you can add on an extra step. Also, have the common sense to stop when something feels wrong. The exercise could be strenuous but it should never become painful. Once it will be again available to you, you will be able to return to the gym, except that you will be fitter, not fatter!

Ladybird tried for you Izumi Sushi Bar

W

e were so excited to know that we were invited over to try out Izumi; the newest restaurant at Dusit Thani Lake View Cairo. Izumu -water spring in Japanese- is a modern elegant sushi bar located on the Mezzanine floor, overlooking the hotel’s lobby. From Izumi, guests can see the whole area of the hotel’s entrance, lobby, and the outdoor view while enjoying their sushi meal. The first thing we tried was the Salmon Salad. We are great fans of salmon, so for us, a Salmon Avocado Salad dish was a dream come true. After that, we were served the Chef ’s signature New Cairo Roll; konafa stuffed with rice and fried shrimps. If we were asked to describe it, we would say, “Unique, special and delicious.” The New Cairo Roll is not raw and it doesn’t contain any seaweed, so it can solve the problem of non-sushi eaters who sometimes find themselves stuck in sushi outings. The Salmon Avocado Salad is another great option for non-sushi eaters. Another menu specialty was the Crazy Spicy Salmon

Roll; maki with chili salmon paste. It’s crazy indeed; very yummy and spicy. A must-try! If you are a spicy lover, you still have to taste the Spicy Tuna Roll with Avocado Crabstick; another flavorful recommendation. We were privileged to have a chitchat about sushi with Sherwin Anib; the celebrity Asian Chef behind Izumi’s delectable sushi creations. Anib explained to us that Nigiri Sushi is the mother of sushi, and that maki rolled in seaweed is considered the original maki while the rest types of maki are the result of introducing some innovations to the original maki. Another valuable piece of information that we got from Anib was that Wasabi is Japanese Horse Radish and has antibacterial properties. It was originally intended to be eaten with Sashimi to kill salmonella. When it was time for dessert, we indulged in Green Tea Panna Cotta and Ogura Ice Cream. The latter is a traditional Japanese dessert; red beans cooked in sugary syrup and eaten with vanilla ice cream. So when you visit Izumi, make sure you leave room for desert.

Safeguard Your Kitchen

A

n unclean kitchen can be a busy factory for germs and bacteria. That’s why; keeping your kitchen clean should be high on your list. Here are some tips to help you out in knowing how to keep your kitchen germ-free.

Knife block: You use a knife to clean a piece of fish, then rinse it and return it wet to the knife block. That can cause mold, which can grow in just 24 to 48 hours. Scrub your knives with dish-washing liquid and hot water, then wipe them thoroughly with a dry cloth before putting them into the knife block. Better yet, keep your knives in a drawer or on a magnet strip.

Faucet filter: You bump the dirty dishrag against the faucet as you’re rinsing it out, or dirty water or food splashes up on it. Bacteria can grow, and so can lime-scale residue if you have hard water. Take out the filter and soak it in white vinegar overnight once a week.

Cutting board: Since a variety of foods touch your cutting board, make sure to use a different board for each type of meat or produce. Rinse and wash the board after putting raw meat on it, which can leave behind traces of salmonella.

Kitchen fabrics: Kitchen towels, cleaning cloths and sponges used after handling raw meat, poultry, and vegetables, should be disinfected, washed in a hot wash (greater than 60 degrees Celsius) or disposed after use. To disinfect a wet sponge, place it in the microwave and zap it on high for two minutes.

Leftovers: Refrigerate leftovers within two hours of serving food and toss uneaten leftovers after three days.>>

In the childhood memories of every good cook, there’s a large kitchen, a warm stove, a simmering pot and a mom.

Barbara Costikyan

Sink: All the stuff you rinse in the sink -shrimp, the turkey- leave behind bacteria, juices, and blood. Disinfect with bleach and water right after you’ve cooked with raw meat, eggs, or poultry.

The blender: The problem with the blender is that just washing it out in hot water is not enough because it’s hard to reach the area near the blender blades. The rubber gasket that goes under the blender blades is where we can find a lot of germs. To solve this problem, totally disassemble the blade section, wash the components in hot soapy water, and then dry each component separately and completely to prevent trapping moisture where germs can grow.

54 | September 2013

The trash: Garbage typically stinks, and it is usually not just yesterday’s leftovers. When bacteria and mold start to grow, they release odor into the air. So if your trash smells, take it out! Empty your garbage every day if possible, and clean out the can with sudsy water once a month. Use a hose or a utility sink to rinse. Once the can is dry, sprinkle some borax into the bottom of the garbage can to help deodorize and prevent bacteria build-up in the future. In a pinch, try baking soda.

Kitchen surfaces: Clean all kitchen surfaces regularly using soap and hot water; always rinse the surfaces with fresh water and allow them to air dry. To sanitize frequently touched areas like refrigerator shelves, countertops, faucets, door knobs, cupboard handles and the kitchen phone, mix 1 tsp. (5 mL) of unscented bleach with 1 qt./1 L of water in a spray bottle. Vinegar can also be used to sanitize surfaces. Spray it onto the areas to be sanitized and leave it on for 10 minutes before wiping it dry.

Freezing 101

The option of freezing and storing food can sometimes be a life saver. However, if done wrong, it can do more harm than good. This is a beginners’ guide to freezing food that will have you saving time and effort in the kitchen.

Freezing does not kill germs According to Lorna Rowswell, from the hygiene and microbiology team at the Food Standards Agency, it is a common misunderstanding that freezing kills off germs. Most types of bacteria survive freezing, but they do become inactive while the product is frozen. This is because of the low temperature and lack of available water. Frozen food will, therefore, keep indefinitely, although the taste or texture of the food can deteriorate over time due to ice crystal damage. When the food starts defrosting, its core temperature rises and water becomes available, providing the ideal conditions for bacteria to grow. And, as a rule of thumb, the warmer the temperature, the more active bacteria are, which is why we recommend defrosting food slowly and safely, preferably overnight in the refrigerator. This way there is less risk of harmful bacteria growing in the food. Once defrosted, food will spoil in the same way as if it were fresh, so handle defrosted foods in the same way as you would raw.

Wrapping food for the freezer

Keep in mind that when you freeze foods, If you’re freezing food for a short time, plastic bags or you want to accomplish five things: wrap are adequate. Wrap foods airtight to decrease the chance of “freezer burn,” which occurs when air meets 1. Prevent freezer burn. frozen food. Freezer burn is not harmful but adversely 2. Prevent moisture loss. affects the food’s texture and color. For longer periods, 3. Prevent the transfer of smells to and from other foods. use special wrappings such as heavy-duty aluminum foil, 4. Use what freezer space you have wisely. special plastic freezer bags, or freezer wrap. You can also 5. Prevent food poisoning as your food cools. use heavy-duty plastic containers or jars, but never put glass containers in the freezer; the extreme temperatures may cause the glass to break. Remember to leave head space in jars or containers because foods expand during freezing. In all cases, packages should be secure and airtight. Leave as little air as possible in the freezer containers by removing as much air as possible from freezer bags before sealing them and by using freezer safe containers that closely fit the amount of food being frozen. To make sure your food freezes as quickly as possible to discourage bacteria growth, use small containers with a capacity no bigger than 4 quarts. Ideally, the food should be less than 3 inches thick within the container. Finally, label and date freezer bags or containers. Blanching vegetables Blanching (scalding vegetables in boiling water or steam for a short time) is a must for almost all vegetables to be frozen. It stops enzyme actions which can cause loss of flavor, color and texture. Blanching cleanses the surface of dirt and organisms, brightens the color and helps retard loss of vitamins. It also wilts or softens vegetables and makes them easier to pack. Blanching time is crucial and varies with the vegetable and size. Underblanching stimulates the activity of enzymes and is worse than no blanching. Overblanching causes loss of flavor, color, vitamins and minerals.

Freezing fruit When freezing fruit, wash it well, then follow a specific freezing recipe. Sometimes ascorbic acid or another antidarkening agent is called for; these products are readily available in supermarkets and pharmacies. Fruit can be packed in syrup or sugar or be completely unsweetened. Thaw frozen fruit in its freezer container, and use it as soon as it is thawed for best flavor and texture. When fruit is completely thawed, the texture will be a bit mushy, so plan on using frozen fruit in sauces, pies, or other recipes that don’t require perfect texture.

Refreezing Rowswell explains that although freezing keeps food safe, thawed food should not be refrozen. Refrozen food has a higher risk of causing food poisoning because, as explained, when food is thawed, bacteria can multiply rapidly, particularly if at room temperature. So if the product is refrozen these bacteria will survive, and when defrosted again, it is more likely that the bacteria would reach harmful levels and cause food poisoning. However, if you cook defrosted food before refreezing (for example turning defrosted chicken into a chicken curry), any harmful bugs will be killed off, making the food safe before freezing. Any defrosted food can be stored in the fridge for up to two days before it needs to be cooked or thrown away.

How to defrost food safely? Never thaw food at room temperature. Instead use: • The fridge use food within 3 days once thawed. • A microwave then cook it right away. • Cold water fill the sink and change the water every 45 minutes.

Defrosting is a must! An icy freezer is an inefficient one, so make sure you defrost your freezer if ice builds up. Don’t worry about the food; most things will remain frozen in the fridge for a couple of hours while the freezer defrosts.

Love & Relationships

Are you getting on each other’s nerves? W e often hear people say, “He drives me crazy!” or “She stresses me out.” Although a long-term relationship can be extremely rewarding it can also be very challenging and in some cases it becomes a source of stress that can drain our reserves. Even though it is very common to have problems in a relationship, we often misunderstand what causes them to occur. Much of the time they come from hidden conversations and action patterns within us and not from the behaviour or attitude of others. The problem is that we often don’t notice the role that we play. In addition, most people are confused about what it takes to create happy, successful, long-term interpersonal relationships and this confusion becomes a hidden cause of stress.

Destructive Patterns Many of us assume that human beings are naturally loving, caring, and committed individuals who only need to find the right kind of partner to live happily ever after. However, the reality is often quite the opposite. Most of us fail in our interpersonal relationships, because we follow our automatic tendencies and we end up destroying any union that matters to us. 60 | September 2013

To succeed in our relationships, therefore, we must learn to recognize and deal with the hidden relationship destroying patterns within us. Not only must we know how to deal with these patterns in ourselves, but we must also know how to deal with similar patterns in other people as well. We need to understand that it is not other people who stress us out. It is our reactions to them.

There are four key patterns that are very destructive to our relationships. If you learn to recognize and deal with these four patterns, you will be able to prevent or eliminate much of the relationship stress you experience.

1. The constant blaming Of all the relationship destroying patterns that affect both men and women, the most damaging is our tendency to blame someone or something other than ourselves when difficulties in a relationship occur. When we blame either our partner or our “relationship” as the source of our dissatisfaction, we not only fail to acknowledge how we may have contributed to the problem, but we also fail to see that we often have the power to successfully resolve them. The blaming also causes problems in our relationships with our children. Parents are often frustrated and perplexed by behavioural or emotional problems in their kids. They may even take one of their children to therapy because they believe the child is one to blame for the problem. In order for therapy with children to be successful parents must often be helped to stop playing the blame game and adopt a “self-reflective” perspective. This can enable them to identify their own role in causing their children’s problems to occur or persist, and by modifying their own behaviour as parents the behaviour of their children will often improve as well.

2. The urge to change Another destroying pattern is based upon the principle that opposites attract. Most of us become attracted to other people not because they are similar to us, but because they possess certain talents, skills, and qualities we lack. When we “fall in love” with someone, we often hope that their strengths and talents will become available to us, and that we can contribute our strengths and abilities in return. When we find someone who can fill this valuable role, we tend to marry them to keep them around. But slowly an unconscious pattern begins to emerge. It is the pattern whereby you try to change or mould your partner into someone who thinks, feels, and acts just like you. Instead of respecting and appreciating your partner’s differences, you begin to judge them negatively for being the way they are. Instead of keeping yourself open to what their differences have to offer you, you embark upon a foolish and futile project to change them to be the way you like.

3. The need to be right all the time Another destroying pattern is invalidating others opinions and point of view. This pattern stems from our basic tendency to “want to be right” most of the time. We want to be right about our thoughts and ideas. We want to be right about our feelings, opinions, and ways of acting in life. We want to be right about our theories, values, and moral standards. In short, we want to be right about almost everything, and when we actively pursue this goal, we can destroy our relationships in the process. You see, in order for you to be right, you must view other people’s thoughts, feelings, and opinions as wrong or invalid, especially when they differ from yours. While proving yourself right may allow you to feel temporarily satisfied, your partner often ends up feeling hurt and resentful. These small conflicts are not easily forgotten, and they will often come back to you in subtle - and not so subtle - ways.

4. The lack of experience Most people assume they know what it takes to succeed in interpersonal relationships. They think that if they just find the right partner, or if they feel strongly “in love” with another person, their relationship will succeed and they will live happily ever after. This common fallacy is another hidden cause of stress because we fail to admit that we don’t really know how to succeed in a particular area of life. Instead of finding out what it really takes to succeed, we act like we already know and there is no further need for us to study the matter. Although love is a powerful impetus for husbands and wives to help and support each other making each other happy, being a family, it does not in itself create the substance of the relationship. To know what it takes to have happy, successful relationships, wait for our next issue.

Choosing the Right Sport for your Child

62 | September 2013

S

ports can do more for your child than just increase their physical fitness. They are great for building teamwork, confidence and improving body image. They are also a wonderful opportunity for children to grow and mature into healthy, successful adults, and parents are the perfect person to guide them. Finding the right sport for your child can be challenging, and often you’ll need to stop and start a few along the way.

The best sport for a child is one that the child finds fun and interesting. To encourage a healthy and active lifestyle, you might casually expose your child to a variety of physical activities and let the child’s desires and abilities act as a guide to further commitment. Allow your child the freedom to try different sports. If your child is interested in a particular sport, check out the programs available at school or clubs.

Benefits of team sports Ideally children should try some form of team sport at some stage of their childhood. Playing a team sport builds resilience and teaches many skills that are invaluable throughout life, such as working as part of a team.

Benefits of solo sports A solo sport can teach persistence, dedication and build a child’s self-esteem. Even though a sport may be played on their own, there are normally still a lot of opportunities for socialization and competing with others so the benefits of team sport also apply.

Trying it out Most sports will allow your child to try out a session or two without the need to buy a proper uniform or commit to a term or season. Usually your child can go along in a plain shorts and t-shirt combination to see how they like the sport.

Player Pointers Teach your child to: • Enjoy the game. • Respect teammates, as well as opponents, whether they are winning or losing. • Remember that the outcome is never as important as the lasting impression of warmth, understanding and pure enjoyment of playing. • Remember that scoring is most thrilling when it rewards a true achievement. • Recognize that playing to win is an essential component of competition, but seeking victory at

any cost defeats the true meaning of competition. • Show respect for the referees, umpires and judges at all times, and accept their decisions in a dignified manner. • Lose gracefully, as well as win gracefully. • Try their best.

Parent Pointers Some things for parents to keep in mind: • Attend practices and games if your schedule allows. • Avoid material rewards. Stress the joy of the sport. • Listen. Make your child feel important and encourage contribution to a team effort. • Understand that your child will make mistakes. Be positive and do not criticize. If your child is not performing correctly or improving, suggest an alternate technique with the coach’s guidance, such as, “That’s pretty good, now how about trying it this way?” • Teach your child that involvement means certain responsibilities are required-for one’s self and towards other participants. • Encourage your child to give activities the best effort possible, to be responsible and to respect team mates, coaches and opponents-valuable lessons in sports as well as in life. • You should avoid pushing too hard, overprotecting or academically delaying a child for competitive reasons. • Be graceful (and not boastful) when your child’s team wins. • Be positive and provide encouragement when your child’s team loses or your child fails to place. • Do not disagree with the coach or referees on the field or in front of your child. Questions, input and positive suggestions should be discussed privately and calmly.

The only way to prove that you’re a good sport is to lose. Ernie Banks

Sole Secrets What your shoes say about your personality

Y

our shoes give away more than you might think about your personality. “You can get an amazing amount of information from a person in just a fraction of a second,” said Christian Crandall, a professor of social psychology at the University of Kansas and lead author of a study published in the Journal of Research in Personality. The study showed that your shoes communicate at least something about your character.

High-Heeled Shoes: Uncomfortable looking shoes are worn by calm personalities. Practical shoes: Functional footwear generally belongs to agreeable people. Ankle Boots: This style tends to fit with more aggressive personalities. High-Tops: People who wear high-tops tend to be standoffish and introverted. They’re also less likely to be agreeable and conscientious. Snazzy Sneaks: People who wear bright, colorful, brand name sneakers tend to be more emotionally stable. Stilettos: People who love to wear stilettos are confident and have a great taste in fashion. They always love being the center of attention. Wedges: Style and comfort, all in one. Those who love wearing wedges are practical and have down-to-earth personality. Flat Shoes: If you’re a flats-lover, you are productive and outspoken. For you, style is as important as comfort. Loafers: If you love loafers, you are creative and sometimes you prefer doing everything by yourself. Boots: People who have addiction to boots are sociable and love travelling. They’re also fearless and have a great sex appeal.

Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world. Marilyn Monroe

Virgo

August 22 - September 22

Element: Earth Positive traits: Analytical, observant, helpful, reliable, meticulous and modest. Negative traits: : Skeptical, fussy, overcritical, inflexible, cold, fastidious, judgmental and interfering Compatible with: Capricorn, Taurus, Cancer and Scorpio Incompatible with: Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Aries, Gemini and Leo Likes: Taking center stage, rudeness and asking for help Dislikes: Strangers, and revealing of personal life Famous Virgo: Scott Speedman, Blake Lively, Pink, Tom Hardy, Chris Pine, Colin Firth and Evan Rachel Wood

HELPFUL RELIABLE& ANALYTICAL

If you’re involved in art or craft projects, this placement will give you an eye for detail and the patience to work painstakingly. Others will find you charming and attractive. Personal relationships will make you feel good. Getting organized will be your key to success. Career matters will be important. You’ll put a lot of energy into getting ahead. You might be shy about promoting yourself, however. Virgo in a Nutshell Virgos have a very strong sense of good and bad, which makes them highly discriminating. They are cleanliness freaks, which may seem irrational to others. They may not exactly be extroverts, but are good at making new contacts. Their keen sense of responsibility can often lead to heavy stress. Virgos can be emotional, but they rarely make their emotions public, preferring to keep them to themselves, which, at times, can add to the stress. They tend to be over-critical most of the time, which can rub their near and dear ones the wrong way. Virgo in Love Virgo is devoted, gentle, dutiful and loyal. Most Virgos love to take care of their loved ones, creating the perfect havens for them. They hate being dependent on their partners, and may opt to work at all stages of life and relationship. Being one of the most health conscious zodiac sign, Virgo infuses its natives with a dogged determination to remain fit, active and healthy. Most Virgos want similar partners, or they may drive their mates mad over the same thing. Their vigilant, fretting self doesn’t miss anything; they may become overly critical of their partner’s flaws. Jealousy and competitiveness too may ruin their relationships. Virgo and Business Virgos are very intelligent, they have an excellent memory and a highly analytical mind. This makes them good investigators and researchers. They also have the ability to probe into a person’s emotions and they can often see into people and detect what their motives are. This makes them great policemen or interrogators. Virgos are very good at problem solving, this is what they do best. They are confronted with a problem, they will pick apart the pieces and put it together in the proper order. They are rational thinkers and are good at settling other people’s disputes and putting them on the right track for reconciliation. Any position that requires the above features, which is a very long list, is perfect for the Virgo. They keep the world in order. Virgo and Friendship People look up to Virgo for friends because they are straight thinkers and solve problems logically. They are truthful, loyal and determined. Some people might find them cold or emotionally detached because they live in their minds, not in their emotions and feelings. Virgo might try to analyze and control a friend’s life but only with the idea that they will improve their life, not purely for the sake of controlling. Be patient with your Virgo friend and understand that their recommendations are only to make your life better. 72 | September 2013
