ABOUT SILA
The Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA) is a non-profit organization representing the landscape architectural profession in Singapore. It was established in 1985 with the objectives to promote the profession of landscape architecture, support research and education in landscape architecture, as well as create and maintain a high standard of professional qualification.
ABOUT THE AWARDS
Under SILA’s key thrust, we welcome initiatives and collaborations with local tertiary institutions, and work closely with them to continuously advance the learning and practice of landscape architecture. SILA believes in continuous learning and innovation. We believe in providing educational support to grow our profession and nurture the future leaders of our profession. The theme ‘Beyond Just Green’ epitomizes the intellectual rigour of the profession, inspiring creative design solutions within parameters determined by research and analysis. It aims to create awareness that landscape architecture goes beyond the ‘green’ norms of designing with plants and gardens.
The Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects held the 2017 Student Design Awards Ceremony on 10 November 2017 at the Singapore EXPO Convention and Exhibition Center, Hall 3.
NTUC ASSISTANT SECRETARY-GENERAL’S FOREWORD Congratulations to all winners of the Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA) Student Design Awards 2017! The impressive landscape architectural design works by the students and educational institutions from Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region have indeed set new benchmarks for future participants. Singapore’s ‘City in a Garden’ is an enduring international trademark of our nation. We have set high standards in urban greenery through our policies, encouragement of design innovation and a strong partnership with research institutions. These are crystalised by our landscape architects, who shape the very environments we live in. It is hence important to affirm the work that our landscape architects do and create an environment conducive for our young people to join the industry. The Labour Movement is doing its part to raise awareness of the landscape architecture profession and encouraging more youths to consider a career in the landscape industry. In 2016, SILA and NTUC U Associate collaborated to launch Landscape Architects (LA) Future – a platform for students and young talents in the industry to network and learn from fellow professionals. Stemming from this, ground-up initiatives such as the LA Friday saw volunteers from the landscape architecture ecosystem and environmental conservation field sharing on how our youths can prepare themselves to be future-ready and work-ready. A year on, in September 2017, SILA achieved its next milestone for LA Future with the inaugural LA Week, organised together with the Labour Movement and the Landscape Industry Association of Singapore (LIAS). Participants were exposed to activities ranging from biodiversity and bird-friendly city masterclasses, financial and legal talks, to learning journeys to the Marine Cove Destination Park and Gardens by the Bay. I am encouraged to note that these events were well-subscribed and helped to initiate open dialogues with leading industry players for the progression of landscape architects. I commend the efforts by SILA in undertaking the important role of nurturing students and young professionals. We also hope more industry professionals and organisations will step forward to contribute to the practice through internship and mentorship opportunities. I would like to congratulate SILA, all students and educators involved in the SILA Student Design Awards for a job well done. Best Regards, Mr Zainal Bin Sapari Assistant Secretary-General, National Trades Union Congress Executive Secretary, Building Construction and Timber Industries Employees’ Union Supervising Lead for NTUC Building and Facility Management Services Cluster 3
SILA PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD
The Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA) Student Design Awards 2017 has grown larger in scale by the years and this year we synergise with the International Skyrise Greenery Conference and GreenUrbanScape Trade Show. The event provides an excellent platform for the students works to be appreciated by a larger professional audience and potentially give exciting future opportunities for the young professionals. We are privileged to bring the landscape design training closer to the landscape design practice and its implementation aspects. This is of utmost importance to ensure relevance from design to construction and to maintain the spirit of lifelong learning. The SILA Student Design Awards (SDA) is the only tertiary-level student design competition for the landscape architecture students in Singapore. SILA values this as an important educational platform for the professional organisations to network with the participating landscape architecture education institutes whereby future generations of Landscape Architects are nurtured. In its 8th edition, SDA received a total of 65 entries from 4 countries including Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand. We are delighted to see the growing numbers and increasing quality of student submissions, it is a good sign to see the future of our profession being well trained for the challenges ahead. We look forward to SDA’s growth and participation in years to come, as a regional endeavour for landscape architecture education knowledge exchange. We would like to thank our distinguished sponsors STX Landscape Architects, COEN Design International, Grant Associates, Ong & Ong for their generous support for SILA Student Design Awards 2017, as leaders in nurturing the profession’s future. Also, our gratitude to the jury panel members Mr. Mason Tan, Assoc. Prof. Fung John-Chye, Mr. Mike Wood, Ms Xu Jingyi, Mr Jordan Bates and Dr Ervine Lin for contributing their valuable time from their busy schedules for the intensive judging sessions over two evenings.
