ABOUT SILA
ABOUT THE AWARDS
The Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA) is a non-profit organization representing the landscape architectural profession in Singapore. It was established in 1985 with the objectives to promote the profession of landscape architecture, support research and education in landscape architecture, as well as create and maintain a high standard of professional qualification.
Under SILA’s key thrust, we welcome initiatives and collaborations with local tertiary institutions, and work closely with them to continuously advance the learning and practice of landscape architecture. SILA believes in continuous learning and innovation. We believe in providing educational support to grow our profession and nurture the future leaders of our profession. The theme ‘Beyond Just Green’ epitomizes the intellectual rigour of the profession, inspiring creative design solutions within parameters determined by research and analysis. It aims to create awareness that landscape architecture goes beyond the ‘green’ norms of designing with plants and gardens.

To aspiring Landscape Architects, The path and rigour of becoming one is tough. That is because there is the highest expectation of a Landscape Architect to not just place-make our environment, but a duty to take leadership in designing for a better future. While relentlessly working on your project beyond godly hours, times when the spirit is beaten and drowning in despair, have in mind the bigger picture that you are honing your craft now. In a pursuit to elevate yourself to serve a higher calling of changing our environment and mindsets for the better. Be inspired by the knowledge that you will be continuing the great work, of predecessors in serving the causes of sustainability for our nature capital, and an equitable environment for our communities. You are being forged to be the prospective leaders in the next wave of the profession, standing up for the values upon which our Landscape Architecture profession is founded.

With skills sharpened by her education background of management, business administration, horticulture, arboriculture, biotechnology and law, Ann is able to apply her knowledge to a wide spectrum that transcends the traditional boundary of Landscape Architecture. Having won numerous awards ranging from SILA excellence awards to Skyrise Greenery Outstanding Awards as well as having a record in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest vertical garden in the world are testaments to her passion and commitment to her beloved career.
Ar. Randy Chan is the Principal of Zarch Collaboratives with a versatile portfolio that spans architecture, landscape urbanism, art installations, curation, galleries and exhibitions. His notable projects include the Warehouse Hotel, Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden Extension, Sustainable Singapore Gallery at Marina Barrage, Windsor Nature Park and No.17 Geylang Lorong 24A Shophouse, having received recognition including the URA Urban Heritage Award, SIA Architectural Design Award (Gold) and AHEAD Asia Hotel of the Year. Randy’s personal interest inhabits the intersection between art, architecture, the performative and community, with projects such as stage design for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, Singapore: Inside Out 2015 travelling exhibition and art installations including Building as a Body, Memory Conduit and Sonic Womb.

Simon has worked across both public and private practice around the globe, undertaking and completing numerous urban, hospitality, environmental, residential, commercial and master-planning projects. With over twenty years’ of Landscape Architectural experience in Australasia, South East Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the United Kingdom, Simon has an extensive knowledge of landscape, urban design and master-planning issues in different climates, regions and environments of the world. His honed design and management skills range from planning and conceptualisation to detailed design and design management roles in construction. Now based in Asia, Simon’s responsibilities and interests have gravitated toward design focussed thinking, about how a uniquely “landscape approach” can combine so many valuable characteristics; environmental, social, cultural, information and technological to develop innovative, sustained and expressive places for people. An award winner in Landscape Architecture himself, Simon continues to advocate for the development of design ideas and applied technologies in his own and others work, to address local and regional challenges of a fast changing world.

With renewed interests in the profession, education and communication he continues to participate in professional development through industry forums, writing, giving seminars, mentoring and continued personal learning about the vast array of information technology that is opening up possibilities for our uniquely twenty-first century professional: landscape architecture. Tay Bee Choo currently holds the Executive Associate (Landscape) position in the Development & Procurement Group in Housing & Development Board (HDB). She provides professional technical advice and resource to both internal and external agencies/parties. She guides the Landscape Architects with Green & Blue Masterplan, Landscape Implementation as well as on the Landscape layers of the Design Guide. Bee Choo also supports her Director at Landscape Reviews. Under her leadership, she helped to transform HDB‘s environment by introducing of condo-style landscaped precinct gardens, now a standard feature in HDB estates; roof gardens with community gardening for all multi-storey carparks and well integrated landscaped social spaces with 3-generation playgrounds, conducive for residents to gather and bond. Amongst her responsibilities, they included formulation of landscape and greenery policies, establishing guidelines for estate, skyrise and streetscape greenery. She was also responsible for setting up procedures and guidelines to ensure conservation of mature trees, and regulatory approval for tree felling & enforcement of re-planting.

Bee Choo is competent in PUB’s ABC-Water designs, collaborating with PUB to design & implement them in precincts and new towns. These projects serve as a guide to designers, contractors, engineers etc. With her active encouragement of HDB’s consultants, more than 30 projects have received the ABC-Waters Certificate. 5

Audrey is current working as an in-house landscape architect with the Building & Research Institute of HDB. She is in charge of the design and development of parks and public space in housing estates, as well as management of urban greenery related research with tertiary institutes such as the HDB Biophilic Town Framework. Previously, she has held landscape design development positions with Mandai Pte Ltd and the National Parks Board. She is a council member of the Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects.

Mr. Kenya Endo is a landscape architect and educator at National University of Singapore, Department of Architecture. He is interested in designs interrelated with landscape infrastructure and urban hydrology, and his works have been featured in a number of international awards, including OnePrize Stormproof 2013, Holcim Award for Sustainable Development 2014. During his 6 years of practice in Singapore, Kenya has worked on several inter-disciplinary projects in South-East Asia, with the focus on creating livable spaces that integrates infrastructural, ecological and social values. In addition, he has been invited as guest lecturer, workshop facilitator at several Universities in Tokyo and Jakarta, to share his experiences and challenges to envision resilient future.

Kenya obtained his Master’s in Environmental Studies from the University of Tokyo, Japan, and Master’s in Landscape Architecture from Harvard University, US. He is an accredited landscape architect in Singapore, and council member of Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects.

Trained in both architecture and landscape architecture, Huei Lyn graduated from the University of Miami (Bachelor of Architecture) and Harvard University (Master in Landscape Architecture). Her interests are geared towards urban planning and open space design. While based in the United States, she worked on a diverse range of projects; masterplanning to detailed design and construction implementation in North America, China and the Middle East. Since moving back to Singapore she has been instrumental in completing several public projects that have a holistic approach towards landscape architecture and stormwater management. Currently she is part of the ABC Waters masterplanning and implementation team at PUB, working on creating sustainable, bluegreen public spaces for Singapore.

TAI O: A SUSTAINABLE PLAN FOR LIVING WITH WATER
Located in the west of Hong Kong, Tai O is one of the earliest in habitation villages with “living on water” tradition. Since the Song Dynasty (AD 1000s), villages already rely on fishing to make a living. However, located in a flood prone area with the challenges from extreme climate, villagers are facing more frequent risk of flash flood and rising sea level. Challenging living environment also hinder the continuity of this ancient Hong Kong community. This project is going to increase capacity for long term sustainable living in Tai O, in environmental, social and economical aspects.

CONSERVATION The island of Aliabet is a part of the river Narmada’s FOR ISLAND OF estuary which has formed connections with the mainland due to the depositions afflicted by the anthropogenic ALIABET activities. Opposing to a saline wasteland presently

PRODUCTIVE LANDSCAPE A FRAMEWORK FOR WOMEN EMPOWERMENT LIXIA BAO National University of Singapore
The discrimination and crime against women in Indian society make them afraid to go outdoors. I hope that my landscape planning strategies can make use of the existing community spaces to create safer community space for women, by providing new employment opportunities for housewives, rebuilding social network as well as providing re-education opportunities. On the one hand, it involves transforming more than 200 vacant lots adjacent to the house into productive land for housewives; on the other hand, it involves transforming more than 20 vacant lots along the street into women-only places for social contact and reeducation. Replicating this framework on an urban scale and implementing it as a women’s rights strategy could promote gender equity in India as a whole.
JURY CITATION: A commendable design proposal that is lauded for its ambition to employ landscape planning strategies to alleviate discrimination and crime against women in Indian society.

Nowadays, Environment has caused the ecosystem to adapt due to global warming. The Libong island area is habitat to many diversity ecological systems and the sediment flows from the mouth of the Trang river from the Nakhon Si Thammarat mountain range, which makes the sea grass variety attract the last group of dugong in Thailand and the largest bird migration area in Andaman coast of water birds and water birds from Siberia peninsula. The cause of a project established was to find solutions to help the ecosystem as well as being an education centre for human adaptation to be sustainable with nature.

The project is concentrated on how time in solitude could create a level of selfawareness & balance to the mind with notions of extra-sensory perception and renewal through the lens of spirituality. Aimed to help high-conflicting people, the design consists of distinctive spaces that evoke a personal narration and cultivates healing by using both built and natural elements ultimately creating a holistic and alternative approach to psychotherapy. This project was inspired by the conflicting conditions of urbanized (Singapore) communities of today that are often ignored and how these commotions affect our well-being, senses and the emotions generated in our society. Commotions such as family feuds, fights or extreme ones such as slashings, drug abuse etc. The design intends to assist high-conflicting people towards renewal and self-awareness as these are the minorities in our society that are in constant motion with conflict, which disrupts the balance of their mind and body. The site selection for this project is important as it must be a space which resonates with them and has qualities that could contribute to their journey of healing. Istana Woodneuk is the chosen site due to its history of conflicting events and the existing surrounding of the vast wilderness that are both important factors needed for healing/renewal.
JURY CITATION: Superbly well-sequenced, this design showcase is visually compelling and noteworthy. Through the excellent use of photo-imaging, the presentation is striking and evocative.

THE BREATHEABLE TRANSIT: HARMONISING LIFE WITHIN A FLOOD RESILIENCE CREEK CARISSA CHIN University of Melbourne
The ‘Breathable Transit’ is a public introduction that re-activates the creek as a recreational refuge for the public to engaged in while coping with the issues of storm water fluctuations. With the common perception of the existing creek isolated as a utilitarian function, the infrastructure of the concrete channel limits the opportunities of what is supposed to be as a public realm. The intent is to revitalise the creek into an active community-oriented open space, naturalising the concrete channel by reorganising the singularity of the creek through shifting and widening of the water profile, transforming it to a flood-resilience creek.

The “Blue Green Acupuncture” is a concept for using nature and natural systems as a primary tool for climate adaptation and resiliency in Matilda Bay, inspired by the fragility nature of the site as flood protection, as well as spots for restoring and recovery. Matilda Bay is so many things to so many different people – it is a place of beauty, serenity, ecology, recreation, economy, and identity. With careful analysis and consideration to the site. A set of design principles and concept has been made to design. This design proposes not to separate the aesthetic idea of landscape, but rather to integrate them into the school itself. Shaping a vibrant and living framework for adaptation in the face of climate change and sea level rise, where nature improves the resiliency of the bay, our social fabric, and our collective health and well-being. The design strives to rejuvenate the natural habitat within and surrounding the campus. By preserving and protecting existing trees and woodlands, creating a stronger flora and fauna connection. In addition, aiming to enhance students well-being by providing a safe and flexible community that promote cultural diversity and social interaction within the bay. Bringing about a resilience and holistic space for all.

Site shall be addressedd as an experimental ground where through a spatial experience, mind and nature would meet. Experiencing the continuity of the forest through series of gestures wherein, one pauses, wonders and introspects the surrounding dimensions. An idea of re-connecting to the memory of forest that prevails in each one of us and address the question: Can forest spaces narrate stories to the viewer?

Wondering about the disappearance of a waterway (i.e. canal, river, etc.) from the map, I started researching about the waterway which used to meander through the main stem of Singapore. Paved over Stamford canal is one of the evidences of unlinked or lost memory of Singapore. Rapid urbanization allowed us to achieve better quality of life whereas it took away the small and narrow stream to underground. Now, concrete covers the entire and disturbs the natural hydrologic cycle. The effort to control water brought about consequence for frequent flooding issue. We lost not only visual and close connection to the water but also natural management of flood, and furthermore, its related biodiversity. I hereby reclaim the small waterway to ground surface. Restoration of natural process of treating storm water will provide us a resilient urban space which liaise between human with restored natural wilderness.
JURY CITATION: The Jury is impressed with the level of thought and consideration given to *SCAPE and its surrounding areas, especially with the wider analysis of topography and hydrology. The proposal is well researched with highlights of the historical timeline and problems of Stamford Canal (Orchard Road), that emphasises and promotes water treatment and discharge within *SCAPE, while extending the existing open spaces for flexible uses. While the spatial representation of the proposal could have been further developed to address relationship between the urban development and WSUD features, the Jury appreciates the thorough research that translates to the proposal.

The proposed master plan aims to provide user interaction among active spaces while integrating learn and play, promote a sustainable living, healthy lifestyle and to enhance the precinct’s identity. The design focuses on creating a smart and sustainable landscape for play, recreational and fitness. With the idea is to create a unique design that moves away from a typical functional space, it feature green exercise equipment used to generate power for the lighting fixtures around the park. It a softscape selection focused on the natural benefits and services provided by the enhanced biodiversity and planting structure and density.

JURY CITATION: The Jury commends the designer for the interesting programming of spaces, creating an attractive place for visitors. The proposal demonstrates clarity in its good presentation of different spaces across ‘Vitality Park’. Interlink creates seamless organic connections between people and nature, emphasising inclusivity, communalism and multi-generational. Going ‘beyond just green’, Interlink’s design goes beyond just being a park, it weaves themes from Fort Canning’s rich history into various zones across the park. These numerous, interconnected activity zones allow people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to experience oneness with nature in a safe, engaging and communal environment. In parallel, the colour and foliage choices of the park’s flora follow a seamless gradient as visitors move from one zone to another, creating an optical phenomenon that heightens their mood and sense of well-being over time.

The planting proposal is sensitive and appropriate to the context and concept that the design intent. ‘STITCHED’ brings people of various culture and generations together through the history of Paya Lebar Air Base. The creative symbiosis of nature and ecological services within landscape spaces serve as the main catalyst for vibrancy within the community. Aiming to integrate sustainability with innovation inspired by history, the spaces will be stitched seamlessly to provide a full and consistent experience throughout the area while showcasing the individuality and uniqueness of the different spaces. It encourages users to utilize public spaces and form connections with each other using the history of Paya Lebar Air Base.
JURY CITATION: The proposal has considered the relationship of planting to spaces and has responded with the appropriate species, presenting a convincing and holistic planting design. The use of aquatic plants to soften the water edge are evident to effect the feeling the designer intends to achieve. Similarly, for the choice of larger trees species for wider roads shows the thought process of proportion and scale. The Jury is impressed with the clear and attractive presentation.

With the idea is to create a unique design that moves away from a typical functional space, it feature green exercise equipment used to generate power for the lighting fixtures around the park. It a softscape selection focused on the natural benefits and services provided by the enhanced biodiversity and planting structure and density.

JURY CITATION: The Jury was of the opinion that the planting concept was well composed and were chosen to certain spatial theming. The planting species chosen are in line with the design concept of sustainability with the use of native and low maintenance plants. Kallang airport, known to be the first airport in Singapore that combines civil-international transportation and an airbase during WWII, as one of its memorable history. Using these series of events as an inspiration, it represents different programmatic timelines such as past, present and future which acts as a media to convey its history. This project envisions to harmonize and link two different worlds of Humans civilization & Kallang Airport’s memorable history. Users will experience different atmospheres as they travel the space, starting from the Old Gate to the Control Tower. Achieved by using selective materials, light shadow patterns, and viewports.
JURY CITATION: The Jury applauds the clear conceptual presentation with the aid of effective and accurate 3D perspectives, montages with lighting effect. The Jury commends the use of mixed media renderings – hand techniques with computer-generated software. The choice of the technique is also consistent with the design concept of using history as the narrative.

Wondering about the disappearance of a waterway (i.e. canal, river, etc.) from the map, I started researching about the waterway which used to meander through the main stem of Singapore. Paved over Stamford canal is one of the evidences of unlinked or lost memory of Singapore. Rapid urbanization allowed us to achieve better quality of life whereas it took away the small and narrow stream to underground. Now, concrete covers the entire and disturbs the natural hydrologic cycle. The effort to control water brought about consequence for frequent flooding issue. We lost not only visual and close connection to the water but also natural management of flood, and furthermore, its related biodiversity. I hereby reclaim the small waterway to ground surface. Restoration of natural process of treating storm water will provide us a resilient urban space which liaise between human with restored natural wilderness.
JURY CITATION: This is a comprehensive proposal that demonstrates the clear representation of the site and its surroundings. It makes optimal and appropriate use of space showing a fair amount of information including topography and hydrology. The Jury praises the clarity of analysis to design decisions. A focused and more accurate spatial representation is preferred to get a sense of scale for the spaces.

The starting point of the Eupnea is the issue that due to the urbanization and the prevalence of high technological devices, people in city life are getting used to the fast-paced life that created by the narrower and narrower distance between people on public spaces, and usually, ignore their surrounding environment. Therefore, this project is aimed at creating a space for people to escape from daily life stress, to have a space to take a breath. Obviously, the group of people that are affected most are office workers. For office workers, the places they stay for the most in daily life are working space and home, which makes the in-between space, the commuting space, also called threshold zone, become very important for them.
JURY CITATION: The proposal demonstrates clarity in its minimalistic presentation technique, resulting in a simple, clean and elegant presentation that tells the story of the design. The Jury praises the designer’s ability to encompass a large amount of information in a clear and organised fashion that is made easy for comprehension.
