WHEN DREAMS COME TRUE The pastel dresses were altered and carefully pressed, the wax flowers were twisted into delicate bouquets, the dance had being choreographed, the tickets were on sale and hours of practice would ensure everything ran smoothly. There was nothing left to do for the 15 princesses but to enjoy their ´special day´. Thanks to the initiative the “Quinceañera Program”, hosted by the Gulf Coast Latin Chamber of Commerce, 15 young girls from low income families were about to be given the chance not only to enjoy the party they have dreamt about, but also to receive a full scholarship to keep making their dreams come true.

Abused Men Suffer In Silence

Every 38 seconds somewhere in America a man is battered or raped by his intimate partner. When people think about domestic violence they tend to think of women as the only victims. But they will be surprised to know that an average of 835,000 men in the U. S are victims of domestic violence each year too. They are pushed, shoved, slapped and hit or even worse, they are psychologically and emotionally abused. When it comes to domestic abuse less is known and much less understood about the pattern of abuse that a significant number of men suffer at the hands of their partners.

SARASOTA- Ever since she was a little girl Rosalba had dreamed of marking her 15th birthday with a ´Quinceañera´, the festive “sweet 15” party thrown by many Latino families to commemorate the entrance of a 15-year-old daughter into womanhood.

However, when Rosalba moved from Querétaro, Mexico to U.S.A with all nine members of her family in search of a better life, her dream seemed unlikely to be realized. Her father worked day and night to support them but, even with that, the money was never enough. There was no chance she could make her dream come true. Or, at least that is was what she thought.

But last August 6th, at the Girls Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida Event and Conference Center in Sarasota her luck changed and her dream came true. Rosalba and fourteen other Latina youth girls were the honorees in the program “Quinceañera: 15 years” celebrated by the Gulf Coast Latin Chamber of Commerce for their 15th anniversary.

Cynthia Castro, Nancy Durán, Carolina Espinel, Danielle Herrera, Rosalba Macario, Sonia Martinez, Sofía Paschero, Karyna Salcido, Jacqueline Tapia, Elisa Torres, Britnee Treviño, Nancy Urzua, Ángela Valderrama, María Vargas and María Zamudio had been the winners of the program. They would have the chance to experience the party of their dreams as well as becoming eligible for full scholarships that will allow them to have better opportunities in life.

“By the time the ceremony ended there was not a dry eye in the place” said Ximena Granada, director of the program. ”It was very emotional. There was a lot of crying.

It was a great experience for the audience as well as the girls”.

State College of Florida

Muestra crecimiento sin precedentes

BRADENTON.– De acuerdo a un reciente informe del Departamento de Educación de la Florida, el State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) fue seleccionada como la segunda universidad de más rápido crecimiento en el Florida College System (Sistema de Universidades de la Florida) de 28 miembros para el año académico 2008-09.

El SCF creció en un 14 por ciento sin precedentes con respecto al año anterior, superando de manera espectacular el sistema general con un modesto incremento del 3,9 por ciento. Este objetivo muestra por primera vez que el SCF ha registrado ganancias de inscripción de esta magnitud en un año.

“El progreso tan espectacular de nuestra universidad es una gran noticia no solo para el SCF, sino también para nuestra región, debido a que una fuerza laboral bien educada ayudará a alimentar la base económica de nuestra comunidad”, comentó el doctor Lars A. Hafner presidente del SCF. Visto en términos de número de estudiantes, el panorama es igualmente notable, señalaron los funcionarios del SCF. La universidad aumentó en 2.926 estudiantes más que los registrados en el último año académico, colocándose en quinto lugar en el sistema, muy cerca de las principales universidades del área metropolitana como Miami-Dade, Palm Beach y Valencia.

Hafner atribuyó el histórico crecimiento de la universidad en gran parte al entusiasmo por la ampliación de la universidad y la evolución de su misión.

Reconociendo que la recesión económica ha desempeñado un papel estimulando el crecimiento de inscripciones, Hafner comentó que las universidades históricamente han sido el lugar donde las personas van a cambiar de reorientación según el mercado variante laboral.

SCF aumentó el número de estudiantes 17 por ciento este verano comparado con el del verano anterior que representó 1.000 estudiantes adicionales. Las estimaciones tempranas para el otoño indican un aumento de dos dígitos que llevarán la inscripción a un nuevo máximo de 12.000 o más estudiantes para el semestre.

luncheon, the fifteen were taken by limousine to Sarasota for a photo session to commemorate the day´s festivities.

Meanwhile, at the Girls Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida Event and Conference Center, volunteers and members of the Latin Chamber of Commerce had spend the day decorating the walls with pink and white balloons, white satin ribbons and covering the tables with white and pink tablecloths. It was there where family, friends and supporters mingled, anxiously awaiting the girls’ arrival.

At 7 pm, the fifteen ´quinceañeras´ dressed in pink and white dresses arrived at the center in two stretch limousines. Outside, waiting for them, there were 15 young men serving as their escorts for the evening.

Soon afterwards, as the honorees were getting into the building one by one, the host, Jim Delgado, told the audience about each girl´s expectations for their future education. The crowds were cheering as they arrived.

One by one they all were introduced before the big surprise; the girls entertained the guests with a traditional Latin dance routine, followed by a dance with their escorts. By the time the ceremony ended all the families ran to meet their girls and let them know how proud they were about their achievement. Ángela Valderrama, a confident bubbly young Colombian woman for her age, described the experience as “mind-blowing” including the series of cultural and educational workshops leading up to it. “I will never, ever forget it” she said “It will be something I tell my children about. It is not just the party that was amazing, I loved the classes that led up to it so much. It makes me feel that I could do whatever I want if I put my mind to it”.

Emilse, Ángela´s mother, almost in tears, shared her daughter’s excitement and enthusiasm . “I have no words, I am so proud of what my little girl has achieved with such a young age. It is not just that she has had the party that everybody dreams about, it is that she will be able to become whoever she wants thanks to the scholarship she has been given”.

Quinceañera: A life changing program

While the prospect of a festive party and fancy wedding-like dresses and elaborate hairstyles might have been what was uppermost on the participants’ minds from the outset, Ximena, director of the program ´Quinceañera: 15 years”, the members of the Gulf Coast Latin Chamber of Commerce and a committee of volunteers worked hard to make sure that it was more than a party.

“The ´Quinceañeras: 15 years´ program was launched with the purpose of offering opportunities to girls with no means of support, not just with this special party but also with scholarships to help them get into higher education” said Granada. “These girls were chosen for their achievement. They come from low income families however they have achieved the highest grades, are involved with the community and have showed us how much this program meant to them. There is no doubt they deserved this special day”.

These 15 special girls from Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties were chosen among 25 applications and according to the members of the jury, it was harder that they first thought because of the high level of the contestants. “There was a variety of factors but principally we based our choice on the ability to convey a genuine interest in attaining a college education” continued Ximena By the time the ceremony ended Ximena Granada, a member of the Gulf Coast Latin Chamber of Commerce admitted to be proud of what was achieved that night and said she is already thinking about how to improve upon the event for next year. “I could not be more proud of what we achieved today. We just did a community service and we hope these scholarships help these special girls to make their dreams become a reality”.

The bright lights will keep shining on these lucky young ladies. Being princesses for a day was the first step on the way. Next will be keeping dreaming about their future, now open for them thanks to these scholarships.

They made a wish. Their efforts have made their dreams come true.

Abused Men Suffer In Silence

With nothing more than a rucksack on his back, Mexican Alberto Sandoval, 36, left his house and his two sons behind two years ago in search of help. Only a few months earlier he had been enjoying the American dream: a good job, a seafront home, expensive cars and enough money to send his children to private schools. But after 9 years of relentless psychological and physical abuse from his then-wife, American, Sophie, 30, and mother of his children, he decided enough was enough.

The day had arrived when Alberto was willing to break his silence and to ask for help.

“For 9 years my life was a misery, my wife hit me almost every day, but I did not report it because of the stigma and humiliation attached to it” he assures. “It wasn’t just an incident once a month or once a week even. Sometimes she could hit me or shouted at me dozen times a day. There was no respite, so I did not have any time to reflect and think, ‘This is wrong.’”

-Alberto did not say anything to anyone for years –“I suffered manipulation and control through our children, as well as physical violence. But when you love somebody and they tell you they love you, it’s very difficult to pursue prosecution”.

“I never sought medical help for any of the injuries,” he admits. “I just thought no one would believe me, it sounded so silly. I tried talking to my doctor about my depression and where it was coming from but he just

prescribed me some tablets. So I just put my head down, got on with it and lived for the tiny moments that was ok” Sandoval confesses.

Alberto is just one of the 835,000 male victims of domestic abuse every year in America.

But unlike most of them, he decided to put an end to his suffering. One day Alberto asked for help and found someone who was willing to listen. “I was walking out of a police station one day after another incident with my partner and I saw a leaflet for SPARCC (Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center, Inc) and I didn’t think twice. I did not know what to say, but once I met them they made me understand that I did not deserve a life full of misery” concluded Sandoval.

This battered man found help in SPARCC, a non-profit agency that provides intervention and support services to victims of domestic abuse in Sarasota and De Soto. Victoria Imbriaco, one of its counselors explains “Traditional gender roles confuse the matter.

A ´real man´ is expected to be able to “control” his wife. Aside from the embarrassment over admitting abuse, abused men may feel that they are somehow less of a man for ´allowing´ themselves to be abused. They need to understand that abuse is never the victim’s fault. This is not less true just because the victim happens to be male”.

In fact this expert assures it is very difficult for male victims to come forward. “It is a hard thing to do for them. They have a sense of powerlessness. The stigma is huge.” Imbriaco, as member of SPARCC recommends male

victims call them before calling the police so they can accompany the victim to the police station.

“We know the officers; we can steer the victim through the process”, she concluded.

“It’s such a tremendously difficult step to take that they need the support. Being abused is one thing, but when someone does not believe them, this can be worse than the abuse itself.”

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS FOR BATTERED MEN

While most attention is given to women who are abused by men, men are often overlooked victims of domestic abuse.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics Crime Data Brief, men account for approximately 30% of the victims of reported intimate partner violence (February 2009) Battered men - like Alberto - are more likely to be embarrassed by their abuse, making them less likely to report it, according to the Domestic Abuse Helpline for men web site, which states men often worry, “What will people think if they knew I let a woman beat up on me?” and “I don’t want to be laughed at; no one would believe me.”

Another distinguishing factor is that while women who are abused are more likely to be pushed or shoved, beat up, or threatened with a gun, the women who do the abusing are more likely to throw something, kick or bite, hit with an object, threaten with a knife, or actually use a knife, according to the National Violence Against Women Survey.

And perhaps the most important difference is that women who batter may use the “system” to their advantage. “Systemic abuse can occur when a woman who is abusing her husband or boyfriend threatens that he will never see his children again if he leaves or reports the abuse” says Maureen Ávila, a Family Law attorney.

“A man caught in this situation believes that no matter what his wife or girlfriend does, the court is going to give her custody, and this greatly limits his ability to leave”

violence against men, continues Maureen Avila. As an attorney, the advice I would give to men suffering abuse is to keep a record of all incidents, report violence to the police, get medical help for injuries, take legal advice, never retaliate, and tell families and friends what is happening”.

Regarding men rights she said, “There something everybody needs to know, men are protected by exactly the same laws as women, all statutory services such as the police, housing departments and social services have a duty to provide services to all, whatever their gender is”, concluded Avila

GETTING HELP

There are several not-profit help lines that specialize in supporting men who have been abused. For instance, Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men is one of them. This organization supports and helps in finding resources for men and can be reached from anywhere in the country, 24 hours a day. “We will provide support and help and we will try to make a man understand that the abuse is not his fault and it is not acceptable” says Brown, one of the operators.” We urge anyone whose relationship scares them to call us for help”.

Another helpline is the National Domestic Violence Hotline. “Every call is anonymous.

We have advocates who can answer their questions, and we try to connect callers to resources in their local area” assures Havilah Perkins, Media Relations Coordinator for this Hotline.

“Abusers are good at making them feel isolated and alone, but they’re not,” says Havilah.

“We get calls from all types of people -- doctors, lawyers, laborers, military personnel. The biggest hurdle they face is finding someone who believes them. If they are believed, they can get help, and that’s why we’re here”.

Primer auto eléctrico en serie a escala mundial

La era de los autos con fuentes de energía alternativa va tomando fuerza con la llegada al mercado del i-MiEV, el primer modelo eléctrico que será vendido en serie a nivel mundial. Llegará a Japón este verano y posteriormente estará en Europa y Estados Unidos.

Aunque no es nuevo que se desarrolle un vehículo que funcione con electricidad o un sistema híbrido, para Mitsubishi llegó la hora de presentar una opción a gran escala para hacer frente a las necesidades del sector automotriz: proteger el medio ambiente y ofrecer alternativas rentables para mitigar la actual situación económica.

Este auto funciona con un avanzado equi-

po de almacenamiento de energía eléctrica llamado iones de litio, no tiene dependencia alguna de la gasolina ni produce humo. Sus baterías están ubicadas en el centro y bajo el suelo, y también tiene un propulsor eléctrico magnético permanente.

Tiene dos sistemas de recarga. Uno doméstico, que está adherido a la parte derecha del coche, y funciona con el mismo tipo de enchufe que se conoce en elementos comunes del hogar como el computador o el televisor.

Por esta vía se recarga después de siete horas.

También ofrece una alternativa más rápida, con energía proveniente de postes específicos que se conectan al lado izquierdo del coche, y con el que se logra una recarga del 80 por ciento en 25 minutos.

Seguridad en Internet, un desafío para los niños y jóvenes La familiaridad de los menores con la computadora y la Internet podría hacer más difícil que ellos midan los riesgos o consecuencias de sus acciones. A diferencia de los adultos, los niños y jóvenes son presas fáciles porque su interacción social es limitada y muchos de ellos tienden a confiar en extraños con facilidad.

Por otra parte, en el caso del robo de información personal los jóvenes son los más afectados. Esto se debe en parte a que los criminales abren nuevas líneas de crédito (en lugar de preexistentes) bajo estos nombres, y la mayoría de los jóvenes no se da cuenta del fraude hasta que abren sus propias cuentas y son informados de cuentas preexistentes.

Sin embargo, hay pasos que los padres pueden tomar en casa para mejorar la seguridad de sus hijos al navegar en Internet. El primero es hablar con ellos.

Dígales que no compartan información privada como dirección, edades y números telefónicos. Recomiende que no envíen fotos a extraños ni abran emails de personas desconocidas.

Los niños deben mantener sus contraseñas en secreto y compartirlas con sus padres. Otras

recomendaciones incluyen enseñarles a ser buenos ciudadanos digitales, es decir, que nunca hagan en Internet o con sus celulares lo que no harían en persona.

Asimismo, las mismas normas de cortesía y respeto que se usan en el mundo real, aplican en el mundo virtual.

Si alguien hace comentarios negativos, hirientes o con contenido sexual se lo deben decir a un adulto inmediatamente.

Sus hijos deben de navegar de manera segura. Si están en la primaria, es recomendable colocar filtros para prevenir que tengan acceso a páginas con contenidos inapropiados.

World Species Endangered

by Climate Change

Rapid extinction of arctic and sub-arctic species, as well as other latitudes has created alarm among ecologists.

The Polar Bear, not so long ago the king of arctic plains, is increasingly threatened by the destruction of its habitat. Ice layers becoming narrower and arctic summers getting longer force them to look for food at places populated by humans who shoot them.

Various bears drown after swimming hundreds of kilometers in search of any floating ice layer to settle. A great number of polar bears were found drowned in a desperate attempt to reach the shore at 200 miles (320 kilometers) to the north of Barrow, in the northern coast of Alaska, in 2008.

According to the British Report, four out of five migratory birds are threatened by problems as drought or desertification.

Global warming has also led to serious consequences for species from other latitudes, hence producing that a third of places where several Caribbean turtles nest would be flooded if sea level increases half a meter.

Shallow waters where the Mediterranean Monk Seals, dolphins, manatees and other marine mammals inhabit may also disappear.

Whales, salmons, cods, penguins, and other species have also been affected by some changes in the distribution and increasing amounts of krill and plankton, which are included in the food chain.

Some Comets Get Through Saturn and Jupiter

It is believed that dinosaurs disappeared as a result of a collision between the Earth and an asteroid 65 million years ago. However, how many asteroid collisions took place and what did they cause?

Astronomers think that Saturn and Jupiter have somehow protected the internal solar system, since gravity axis can launch comets to the interstellar space and even causing them to strike other giant planets. Last month, this theory was confirmed once again, when Jupiter’s surface presented a crack, proving that a comet collision occurred.

However, researchers of the University of Washington, Seattle found in a recent study that “long-term” comets landing in Earth’s orbits may come from regions previously thought unable to produce visible comets. (A long-term comet takes from 200 years to thousands of years to complete a single Sun’s orbit.)

This is why experts do not believe that comets may have produced more than one massive extinction throughout history; over the years, most long-term comets, which move around Jupiter toward the Earth’s trajectories, were believed to have its origins in the external Oort Cloud, a trace of the nebula that formed the solar system 4.5 trillions of years ago.

This cloud begins 93 trillions of miles from the Sun (1,000 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun) and covers almost 3 lightyears (a light-year is nearly 5.9 millions of miles). The Oort Cloud may be composed of trillions of comets; most of them are so small

and far that cannot be seen by the human eye.

Almost 3,200 long-term comets are known.

The most appreciated are Comet Hale-Bopp, visible between 1996 and 1997 and one of the shiniest during the 20th Century; and Halley’s Comet, which shows up every 75 years. This is the best-known, although it has a short-term period. Short-term comets are originated in a different part of the solar system, called the Kuiper Belt.

For the past 25 years, the inner Oort Cloud has been considered a mysterious, unobserved region of the solar system capable of providing bursts of bodies that occasionally wipe out life on Earth.

Three hard collisions happening at the same time, it has been suggested that extinction that took place 40 million years ago resulted from a comet storm. Research conducted by Kaib and Quinn explains that if a less serious extinction was produced by a comet storm, then a more intense comet storm occurred since fossil traces were recorded.

Según la investigación realizada a partir del análisis de imágenes de satélite, la superficie de hielo del glaciar se está reduciendo a un ritmo de 16 metros por año, frente a los cuatro metros que perdía de acuerdo con los estudios

Este proceso ha provocado que, desde 1994, el glaciar haya perdido hasta 90 metros de su grosor, lo que puede tener un impacto significativo en el incremento del nivel de las aguas del océano.

El glaciar de la isla de Pinos es el mayor de los que se extienden hasta el mar en la Antártida, y su estado puede ser un indicio de cambios en curso en la capa de hielo interior.

De que el ajo es bueno para el corazón, no hay duda. Pero respecto a de dónde provienen estos beneficios al sistema cardiovascular y sobre cómo aprovecharlos al máximo, todavía hay más descubrimientos.

Un nuevo estudio desarrollado por científicos en el centro de investigación cardiovascular de la escuela de medicina de la Universidad de Connecticut, descubrió la primera evidencia científica de que el ajo fresco molido tiene mejores efectos para la salud del corazón que el ajo seco.

Esto, a su vez, da fe de que –contrariamente a lo que se piensa— la mayoría de los beneficios a la salud provenientes del ajo no se deben a su amplia gama de antioxidantes; sino que son resultado del sulfuro de hidrógeno, un químico proveniente de la sustancia que se forma luego de que el

ajo es picado o molido, y que relaja los vasos sanguíneos al ser consumido.

El sulfuro de hidrógeno también se halla presente en los huevos podridos, como los responsables del –casi insoportable—olor que los caracteriza.

Sin embargo, en el cuerpo humano, este químico actúa como un mensajero químico, relajando los vasos sanguíneos y permitiendo que fluya más sangre.

El ajo cocido y procesado, sin embargo, pierde su habilidad de generar sulfuro de hidrógeno.

Un procedimiento que envía energía al corazón a través de un catéter se puede usar para tratar un tipo común de latido irregular, pero poco se sabe sobre los beneficios a largo plazo del tratamiento y los mejores métodos y circunstancias para aplicarlo, según un nuevo reporte financiado por la Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (Agencia de Investigación y Calidad del Cuidado de la Salud—AHRQ) del HHS. El reporte examina el uso de un procedimiento llamado ablación por radiofrecuencia mediante catéter para tratar un tipo de latido irregular conocido como fibrilación auricular.

Obama Discusses Critical Health Issues Affecting Hispanics Today

President Barack Obama, in a meeting in the White House with some journalists, showed himself worried and ensured that the cases of the influenza H1N1, continue appearing in the south of the continent, are being monitored and that with the arrival of winter in the north, the disease may affect more the Latinos who live in the country.

“We think that the possibilities that the Latin community as well as other communities of low incomes, which have no medical insurance, may be more vulnerable to this issue which is serious,” Obama said.

The lack of information and the little medical access may be some of the reasons why the influenza reaches more easily the Hispanic community.

Nevertheless, to prevent and keep informed the community, the government created the webpage www.flu.gov in four languages. Its aim is to keep informed the different communities on the guidelines established by the authorities when the pandemic arrives, how to prevent it and how to monitor it.

“The possibility that a severe influenza kills many people still exists. We have been preparing to keep people informed, we are working in a vaccine, we are making sure that our schools are prepared and not present possible outbreaks,” Obama said.

Obama also took the opportunity to discuss his health reform plans and how they will affect immigrant communities.

And although congressmen went into a summer recess until September, and President Obama did not reached the votes he was waiting for to approve the health reform which will give medical coverage for millions of people, Obama ensured that little by little changes in his mandate have been made.

Nevertheless, these have benefited only the documented immigrants.

At the beginnings of this year the President Obama signed a law named Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009. This law reauthorizes the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) which authorized the United States to receive federal funds to provide health coverage for children in the country. That law also eliminated the five year period of waiting for children and pregnant women, who are legal immigrant, by authorizing the United States to employ the federal funds to give health coverage through the CHIP and Medicaid Programs for these legal immigrants.

“This was a battle and we won. We were there for decades and we made it through,” Obama said.

The president also ensured that when it is talked about the new health reform, the undocumented workers will not receive coverage, “we will try to give insurance for those who are legally here,” said.

In the country, the Latinos are the ethnic group with less medical coverage. The 34 per-

cent do not have insurance. Nevertheless, the fact that more than 12 million undocumented persons stay in the country affects those who may or may not participate in the health reform which will reduce costs and will subsidized some benefits for persons with low income.

The crowd around the bar at Mi Pueblo Mexican Restaurant on University was having a great time, on one recent Saturday night. Munching chips and drinking margaritas and sangrias people did not seem to mind the wait for a table -a half-hour wait- at the overflowing restaurant.

Sitting down to taste a glass of Conquistador margarita I understood why: it´s familiar and charming environment. The casual, relaxed and friendly atmosphere makes you feel at ease, as if you are at home. The drinks continued to flow as the atmosphere grew while our table was prepared.

The first Mi Pueblo Mexican restaurant, located in North Sarasota (Bee Ridge Road) opened ten years ago. Hugo Nuñez, Boni Caro and Michelle Buice, the owners, were willing to make a difference in what Sarasota dinning had to offer. As soon as Mi Pueblo

opened their doors it became one of the few restaurants able to simultaneously offer two of life´s greatest pleasures: exquisite cuisine coupled with familiar and friendly environment.

The words “Mi pueblo” in Spanish mean “my town” which also describes the philosophy the owners and managers have about the restaurant´s atmosphere, food and drinks.

This is a place that avoids the usual tex-mex

fare and instead opts for something more authentic, an example of what an upscale restaurant would be like in Mexico City.

Upon entering the restaurant the customers encounter vibrant walls of yellow and blue adorned with Mexican-style drawings.

Imported stonework, live and artificial plants, water features and soft background music also contribute to the casual ethnic theme.

The colors, the smell and the sound will transport you to Mexico.

Many of the tastes will be familiar to clients with a basic knowledge of Mexican cuisine. There is a whole selection of quesadillas, one of the best is the spinach and cheese version (Enchilada de Espinacas). A Soccer Dream

Sometimes it is hard to find a place to fit into, someplace where there are people like you that share a common interest. That is what Francisco “Chico” Walle is trying to do by putting together a soccer league for young Hispanic kids in the community. Francisco already has a group of adults that play on Sundays and Fridays and is now trying to do the same with the children.

For kids especially, it is difficult to find that place to fit in and that can lead to trouble if there are no programs in place to deter them away from that kind of life. By putting together this soccer organization for the Hispanic youth in the community that is what Chico would be doing. The children would have a place to go after school and have an outlet where to let go.

Other soccer teams in the community have very few Hispanics on them and that can be overwhelming for a young boy looking around and noticing there is no one like himself. Soccer teams cost a family $450 dollars per kid.

Many of the families that Chico’s program would cater to are working families that cannot afford to pay that, especially if they have more than one child.

Raúl Ramos is Chico’s right hand man in this project. He is greatly involved in coaching the kids and would really like to see them have the ability to compete. That is the ultimate goal of the two men to get the team to the point where they will be a real team with the ability to compete with other youth soccer teams. The kids ranging in age from five to

17 agree that they want to compete but most like making friends.

Juan Ramírez age 11 said that he likes the program because “I get to make new friend and I think it is fun to take on new challenges.”

Some of the players like him and his friends Saúl Resendiz and José Casiano have been playing with Chico for about three and a half months while Uriel Alba age 7 has only been playing for two days. All kids are welcome to join and play.

It is not an easy task getting this group together but it is Chico and Raúl’s dream.

There are many obstacles that the men have to overcome first and many if not all are money related. They need to get the team certified and the kids need more soccer balls and some jerseys to practice in. There is a piece of land that encompasses Wauchula, Arcadia and Bradenton that could eventually be made into a soccer complex with all the amenities they would need to get the

ball rolling on a team. The dream complex is put on hold until enough money can be raised but the men have hope that they will be able to achieve their dream eventually; as of now they are just focused on letting the kids play.

Jackson to Be Buried on His Birthday

Michael Jackson’s body will finally be laid to rest on August 29, on what would have been his 51st birthday, the late singer’s father reveals to the New York Daily News.

Joe Jackson told the newspaper that the burial will take place in a private ceremony at 10 a.m. on the date at the Forest Lawn Hills Cemetary in Los Angeles -- more than two months after his death.

The decision to bury him there, according to Joe, was settled within the last few days. Previously, there had been a disagreement over where the burial should be, with some family members wanting it to be done at Neverland and the others opposed.

El Día que cambió la Historia El 8 de agosto de 2009, pasará a la historia de la comunidad hispana en Estados Unidos, ese día Sonia Sotomayor, la hija de Juan y Celina, la misma que naciera en el Bronx en 1954, se convertía en la primera Juez de origen hispano en ocupar un cargo en la Corte Suprema, el máximo organismo de la rama judicial del país.

Sonia Sotomayor emerge como la hispana con el mayor cargo en la nación y se convierte en inspiración de toda una comunidad.

Hoy, podemos decirles a nuestros

hijos que todo es posible, que un presidente de color es nuestro presidente y que una latina es miembro del grupo selecto de 9 magistrados de la Corte Suprema. Sotomayor ha abierto la puerta a miles, a millones de jóvenes hispanos que ven cómo su futuro en esta nación puede ser diferente al de sus padres.

Quizá la principal razón de muchos para venir a Estados Unidos es la de ofrecerles una mejor oportunidad a nuestros hijos. Muchos sacrifican sus vidas literalmente para alcanzar ese sueño de vivir

en este país, una tierra de libertad donde todo es posible, y eso fue lo que demostró el Senado con su votación del jueves 6 de agosto, 68 a 31, para ratificar la selección que hiciera el presidente Barack Obama de una mujer intachable con una historia admirable, orgullo de Puerto Rico, de Nueva York y de toda la comunidad hispana que reside en este país.

Sotomayor será el principio de los logros que alcanzarán las nuevas generaciones de hispanos, porque sus hijos como los míos, hoy tienen

un futuro mejor. Un día estaremos recordando este momento, el día en que digamos que un hispano fue elegido como presidente de esta nación. No está lejos, quizá ya nació el primer presidente hispano, por eso y para que ese sueño se haga realidad tenemos que lograr que más hispanos se conviertan en ciudadanos, se registren y voten, solo así podremos lograr los cambios que nuestra comunidad necesita.

President Obama on Latinos and health care

RALEIGH, N.C. - Once again, President Barack Obama is taking his show on the road. As legislators on Capitol Hill grapple with how to come up with a health-care reform bill that will please all sides, Obama is taking his arguments in favor of a major and expensive overhaul of the health-care system directly to the voters.

People are worried and want answers. Reports indicate that every 30 seconds, someone files for bankruptcy resulting from health problems.

Even worse, some 20,000 people die each year because they did not have health insurance; of those, 13,000 would otherwise have lived for decades. In a town-hall meeting at Broughton High School in Raleigh, Obama warned the American people of the dangers of doing nothing.

I sat down with the president for an exclusive interview shortly after the event, and we began by talking about the most controversial aspect of the proposed health-care overhaul.

I asked him who would pay for it, if not the taxpayer. “It would cost a trillion dollars over 10 years, but that’s a hundred billion dollars a year, and about two-thirds of those costs we could actually take out of money that’s currently being spent

MARÍA ELENA SALINAS in the system − it’s just not being spent wisely. It is going to insurance companies and drug companies. We can take that money, help people, and overall the majority of this can pay for itself over a 10-year period,” he said.

The president recognizes that Latinos, by far, are the group most likely to not have health insurance.

In fact, of the 45 million Americans without health insurance, more than one-third are Latinos, a disproportionate amount when you consider that we make up 17 percent of the population. Among children without insurance, 40 percent are Latino. On the other hand, health-care costs attributed to Hispanics are disproportionately lower than other groups, and more than half of uninsured Latinos pay out of pocket for their health-care expenses.

The National Council of La Raza

believes there cannot be true healthcare reform that does not include undocumented immigrants, legal residents and immigrant children.

I asked the president how this issue is addressed in his proposal. “One of the achievements that I am most proud of in the first six months is not only expanding the children’s healthinsurance bill, but also making sure that legal immigrant children were able to access that. That meant that there were millions of children who otherwise wouldn’t be qualified who are now getting health insurance,” he told me.

“When it comes to legal residents, we want to find ways that they can access the preventive services and the wellness services, getting regular treatments,” the president said; however, undocumented immigrants would not qualify for any health benefits. “Undocumented workers who are here illegally, we want to create comprehensive immigration reform so they can get on a pathway to citizenship, but until they do, we can’t be rewarding them with some of the benefits that, frankly, cost significant money, and there’d be a lot of resistance when people who are U.S. citizens and legal residents aren’t getting these services, to also

provide them to undocumented workers.”

It is understandable that it would be politically risky to include undocumented immigrants in any healthcare reform program. We have seen, in the past few years, the type of divisive debates that surround the issue of undocumented workers.

However, if one of the main goals is to drive down the high cost of health care by providing better preventive medical services, then not including them will be counterproductive.

Half of uninsured Latinos are undocumented immigrants; if they get sick and can’t be treated, they end up in emergency rooms that cannot deny them service, and that is much more expensive than a doctor’s visit.
