Modern Masters at Abbot Hall Display: Until 26 September Featuring a selection of modern masterpieces from Abbot Hall’s extensive collection, this will be a rare chance to see Paula Rego’s major political work, Triptych, as well as important paintings by Frank Auerbach, LS Lowry and other modern and contemporary masters.
The Aegean Suite by Barbara Hepworth Display: Until 20 June This series of prints was gifted to Lakeland Arts by the Hepworth Estate following Abbot Hall’s successful exhibition, Barbara Hepworth: Within the Landscape, (2014). Inspired by her trip to Greece in 1954 with friend and patron, Margaret Gardiner, Hepworth created The Aegean Suite in 1971 and infused works with references to Greek culture and the Greek landscape.
Face Forward Installation: Until 13 June Abbot Hall Art Gallery has itself been turned into a display. Come and see how the many faces of Kendal have given the gallery a different outlook! Can you spot any familiar faces? This is a partnership project with Kendal College.
Face Value: Portraiture from the Arts Council Collection Exhibition: Until 13 June Showcasing the work of Tracey Emin, Richard Billingham and Sarah Lucas alongside conventional portraits by Mark Gertler, Lucian Freud and Vanessa Bell, this exhibition expands the definition of what a portrait can be. Portraiture is a long established artistic tradition from the familiar head and shoulders image to the contemporary political statement portraits which challenge and provoke. Portraiture has never been about creating a simple likeness. This exhibition shows how portraiture prompts much more than a surface reading of the subject to understand issues around identity, representation and motivation.
Portraits at Abbot Hall Permanent display Abbot Hall’s permanent collection includes a historic portrait collection of major significance, dominated by the works of George Romney (1734-1802), who both spent his early years, and died, in Kendal. After considering the many facets and definitions of portraiture in our Face Value exhibition, why not spend some time admiring the defining works of Romney and his eighteenth-century contemporaries who paved the way for more informal and expressive ways of depicting a likeness.

The Watercolour Gallery Display: From 6 May See JMW Turner’s monumental The Passage of Mount St Gothard, one of the artist’s grandest and most celebrated Alpine views and a jewel in Abbot Hall’s extensive collection of eighteenth and nineteenth-century watercolours. Accompanying Turner will be other masters of the medium, including John Sell Cotman, John Ruskin and Joseph Wright of Derby.
Beyond St Ives Display: 26 June - 3 October Abbot Hall opened in 1962 at a critical time for the evolution of painting in this country. Coinciding with our main summer exhibition, Taking Flight: St Ives in the 1950s, this display will highlight some of the key acquisitions from this period, revealing the next chapter in the careers of artists based in St Ives, including Roger Hilton and Trevor Bell, as well as showing how other painters, such as leading American abstract expressionist, Helen Frankenthaler, were influenced by developments taking place in the south west of England.
Taking Flight: St Ives in the 1950s Exhibition: 26 June - 3 October Our summer exhibition will be a riot of colour, showing how St Ives became home to a group of artists who elevated painting to dizzying new heights of vivid expression. For a short period in the 1950s, this small Cornish fishing town in the far south west of England challenged both Paris and New York for the international modern art crown. The show will concentrate on five key artists – Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron, Terry Frost, Roger Hilton and Bryan Wynter – who used light, space and colour to move away from representational, earthbound subject matter and create dazzling paintings of power and presence. This exhibition will include works from major British collections, such as Tate, British Council Collection and Arts Council Collection, as well as private lenders, and follows significant Abbot Hall shows devoted to significant figures from the previous generation of artists based in St Ives, most notably Ben Nicholson in 2008 and Barbara Hepworth in 2014.

Canaletto’s Architecture: Celebrating Georgian Britain Exhibition: 22 October - 14 February 2016 This magnificent exhibition examines Canaletto’s residency in England from 1746 to 1755. As well as showing works created during that time, the exhibition shows the extreme contrast between Canaletto’s depiction of the Palladian architecture of his native Venice – including renowned views of Palladio’s Redentore and San Giorgio Maggiore – with works he created in England.

Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry Displays and Events Programme highlight: Bakestones and Clapcake: Girdle cakes and flat breads in rural Cumbria 1570-1960 Thursday 21 May 6.30pm

A Taste of Lakeland Display: Until 7 September Find out about the food traditions of the Lake District in this display as we focus on foodrelated items throughout the museum. The typical evening meal of a Lake District farmer would consist of meat or fish, seasonal fruits, vegetables and oat-based clap bread baked over a peat fire. Self-sufficiency was the cornerstone of rural life and sheep’s milk was turned into butter and cheese. As well as modest fare, the display looks at more exotic delicacies such as Grasmere gingerbread, potted charr and damson gin.
Georgian and Victorian Fashion Display: 17 July - 4 January 2016 The second part of a display celebrating Lakeland Arts’ fashion collection looks at our Georgian and Victorian pieces from 1780 to 1900. Admire beautiful dresses and elegant waistcoats, shoes, parasols and other accessories that we have lifted out of the store. It’s not just outerwear – delve into the mysterious world of historic underwear to discover how the fashion for the changing shape of the female silhouette was made possible with crinoline cage frames, bustles and bodices.
The Arthur Ransome Room New Display: Throughout 2015 Arthur Ransome is best known as the children’s author who wrote the Swallows and Amazons series of books. His varied and interesting life as fisherman, sailor, journalist and perhaps even spy is explored in this new and expanded room which includes objects previously held in storage. See the first book that Ransome wrote aged 6, his desk and typewriter, sketchbooks and the famous red Turkish slippers mentioned in the dedication to Swallows and Amazons.

If you have ever wondered how a thibble, a girdle and brandreth, a spittle, a havercake maiden and a bakeboard were used, this could be for you. Ivan Day will display a number of these mystery objects from his own extensive collection. Evelyn De Morgan: Artist of Peace Exhibition: until 13 September As we commemorate the centenary of the First World War, this significant show, comprising major paintings and beautifully-executed drawings from the De Morgan Foundation, will focus on the pacifism of Evelyn De Morgan (1855 - 1919) and her reaction both to this conflict and the Boer War of 1899-1902, with many of the works having been included in the artist’s solo exhibition held in the spring of 1916 in aid of the Red Cross. De Morgan’s remarkable paintings bear the influence of early Italian Renaissance art as well as that of her Pre-Raphaelite contemporaries, yet have a distinctive style that is uniquely her own. Trained at the Slade School of Art, De Morgan was a prolific professional artist who enjoyed significant commercial success with sales of her symbolic paintings, inspired by both literature and contemporary concerns.
Yellow Wallpaper with Emilie Taylor Display: 17 July - 6 September We invite you to view the finished ceramic pieces of a social engagement project inspired by the rooms at Blackwell. Emilie Taylor is a socially minded ceramicist with a background in art therapy. After exhibiting her work at Blackwell, she and Space2Create embarked on a series of creative workshops in the calm and seclusion of this former holiday home. These sessions meant different things to each participant, and the ceramic artworks they produced reflect personal journeys and stories.
Baldwin, Britton and Rena: Traditions of Use Exhibition: until 31 December This exhibition showcases the work of three leading British ceramic artists who all grapple with ideas of form and function within the wider debate of where contemporary craft stands in today’s art world. Breaking with the tradition that in ceramics form is all that matters, Gordon Baldwin creates what he terms ‘vessels’ which challenge the concepts of ‘fine art’ and ‘craft.’ So too does renowned ceramicist, writer and critic, Alison Britton, who looks at the connections and disjunctions with ceramic history, painting and sculpture. Nicholas Rena’s sculptural ceramics engage with ideas of containment and emptiness while alluding ‘to traditions of use that are almost lost.’ House Talks Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House Fridays 2pm Join us for an informal look at the house and collection. Free with admission. Full list of talks are available on the website

We all make it again: ancient landscapes, modern art with Michael Bird Thursday 3 September Abbot Hall Art Gallery Clambering over granite boulders and down mineshafts, cliffhanging, kayaking, glider flying, artists in west Cornwall in the post-war decades explored every means of getting across, inside and above the landscape. They looked at it in close-up, from a distance and through the magic prism of mescaline. Michael Bird, author and art historian, asks how this remote coastal region, with it ancient megaliths and industrial ruins, came to mean so much to a group of ambitious young modern artists. He looks at how, despite certain shared aims, artists such as Frost, Heron, Hilton, Lanyon and Wynter arrived at very different experiences and interpretations of the landscape.
