Last Chance Lynn Chadwick: Evolution in Sculpture Abbot Hall Art Gallery & Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House ends 15 June Lynn Chadwick (1913-2003) was one of the most important British sculptors of the twentieth century. He brought an exciting and innovative approach to the construction of his sculptures, working with welded metal to create dramatic and distinctive forms underpinned by a brilliant sense of design. There are 27 sculptures and 17 drawings on display at Abbot Hall with four monumental sculptures in the grounds at Blackwell and a display inside the house exploring the artist’s later works. The sculptures outside, set against the sublime Cumbrian landscape, will remain in place until 29 September, accompanied by a selection of small works on display inside Blackwell putting them in the context of Chadwick’s career as a whole.

The house is a wonderful combination of architecture, craft and the applied arts. In order to bring Blackwell to life and reawaken the interiors, furniture and works of applied arts from the Trust’s collection as well as public and private loans are displayed throughout the house to enhance the beauty of the interiors and interpret the wider Arts & Crafts movement. This summer Blackwell’s exhibitions include external sculpture by Lynn Chadwick and the best of Danish craft with ceramics by Bodil Manz.

Exhibitions Bodil Manz: Exploration of Form Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House 24 May - 1 September Bodil Manz is a world renowned Danish ceramicist. Her work utilises the gentle fragility of eggshell porcelain and dominance of utilitarian white and block colour to create breathtaking vessels. The exhibition traces Manz’s engagement with the cylinder, beginning with her use of colour and pattern to experimentations with the shape and texture on the surface of her pots. The cylinder is a familiar form produced for thousands of years by countless makers. To reinvent it and make it your own is challenging, yet something Manz consistently achieves. The exhibition includes previously unseen new works and most pieces are available to purchase. Sponsored by
Manz has had solo exhibitions in Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam, London and New York and in 2008 was honoured with a major retrospective exhibition at the Kunstindustrimuseet in Copenhagen. In 2007 she was awarded the Grand Prize at the 4th World Ceramic Biennale, South Korea. Works are available to purchase with the ArtFund Own Art Scheme.

Exultant Strangeness: Graham Sutherland Landscapes Abbot Hall Art Gallery 29 June - 15 September Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) was one of the great British landscape painters and, during the 1940s and 50s, one of the most famous artists in this country. Initially inspired by the visionary landscapes of eighteenth and nineteenth-century artists such as William Blake and Samuel Palmer, Sutherland transcended his influences to create a vocabulary that was uniquely his own. This show highlights the brilliant power of Sutherland’s imagination and demonstrates the diverse ways in which he transformed his experience of his environment. The exhibition consists of striking, otherworldly landscapes from throughout Sutherland’s career: early, meticulous etchings which owe a debt to masters such as Rembrandt, Whistler and Palmer, wonderfully fluid drawings and iconic paintings from the 1930s and 40s with their haunting forms, sinuous lines and daring compositions, and mysterious late landscapes, rich in colour and often monumental in scale.

Film Installation Bethan Huws & The Bistritsa Babi: ‘Singing for the Sea’ (1993)
Coffee House exhibitions
Abbot Hall Art Gallery 6 July - 8 September
Abbot Hall
In 1993 Bethan Huws orchestrated a memorable performance called A Work for the North Sea. The work was made in collaboration with a group of Bulgarian grandmothers, The Bistritsa Babi, who, for an hour each evening for three days that summer, stood at high tide and sang to the sea. Huws first researched the music that she had heard in the National Sound Archive in London. It appeared to be a particular form of antiphonal choral singing which was still practised in Bulgaria, based on groups of women singing in the open air – calling out to each other. With the help of a choral expert she found the Bistritsa Babi, whom she invited to perform in Craster on the unspoilt Northumbrian coastline. In this film that documents the performance, their haunting melodies combine with the rumbling of the sea to create a unique polyphony of sound and voice. The project was commissioned and produced by Artangel and is on loan from The Artangel Collection at Tate.
Alan Stones: Lithographs
15 April - 14 July Alan Stones’ images depict nature either as a metaphor for human activity or nature affected by man. In the mid-1990’s, after a three month residency in the Falkland Islands, his prints became minimal in their approach. Since then he has published a great many editions of lithographs from his printmaking studio in the Eden Valley in the heart of Cumbria.
Rebecca Payn: Under the Scree
15 July - 13 October Geology, the passage of time and the changing face of the Cumbrian landscape - these are some of the themes of the Cumbrian poet Norman Nicholson. For painter and printmaker, Rebecca Payn, his words have prompted a remarkable series of prints.

Museum Display Welcome Aboard: Boating on Windermere
Kendal Mint Cake: On Top of the World
Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry Continues until 7 July
Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry 19 July - 21 December
The easily overlooked treasures of the Trust’s museum collections often paint the most vivid pictures. In this display we are bringing boating on Windermere to life, through beautiful dinner services used for fine dining on board, to oil cans used to keep elegant steam launches whisper-quiet. Together with historical photographs and costume we are giving you a glimpse of the stories that will be told in the new Windermere Steamboat Museum when it opens.
From the Arctic to Everest, Kendal Mint Cake has fortified those facing danger and in need of an instant source of energy. The sugary bar has been to the top of the world on many occassions, and formed an essential part of the ration pack on Everest expeditions from the 1920s to the 1970s. Find out how the confectionary is produced and see artefacts from expeditions that have used it, including a replica set of George Mallory’s 1924 expedition gear, as well as items from the 1953 and 1975 expeditions.

Abbot Hall Art Gallery Sunday 11 August 4pm
Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House Saturday 13 July 4pm Architect and trained ceramicist Will Marshall explores the use of ceramics in architecture, design and the environment, shedding new ideas about the way that this often decorative material can be used in a different way. Marshall trained in ceramics and established an international exhibition record in that field with his work in many significant public and private collections. Tickets £9 / £6 ‘Friends’
Join Ian Massey as he discusses Keith Vaughan (1912-1977) a self-taught artist. Rachel Flynn: ‘The exultant strangeness of this place’ Abbot Hall Art Gallery Sunday 28 July 4pm
Amy Concannon: Inspired by Landscapes Abbot Hall Art Gallery Sunday 25 August 4pm
Considered by many to be a bastion of British (or English) national culture, Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) spent much of his career working in the ‘other’ places and spaces of west Wales and the south of France. This talk will consider his response to these landscapes which he celebrated for their ‘exultant strangeness’, revelling in their alien nature while simultaneously feeling that he was completely at home, ‘as much part of the earth as my features were part of me.’
Amy Concannon explores artists inspired by landscapes. Amy is Assistant Curator for art of the period 1790–1850 at Tate Britain. Previously she worked as Assistant Curator and Exhibitions Officer at Dulwich Picture Gallery and prior to this, she spent three years as a member of the curatorial team at the Wordsworth Trust, Grasmere. She has an MA in eighteenth-century drawing from the Courtauld Institute of Art, for which she wrote a dissertation on the watercolours of Richard Westall.
