About the Gallery and Museum Abbot Hall is in the beautiful historic quarter of Kendal, a market town on the edge of the Lake District. This beautiful Georgian villa houses both an impressive permanent collection of historic and contemporary art, as well as a changing series of exhibitions. Opposite, in what was the original coach house and stable block, is the Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry, giving a wonderful insight into the Lake District and its inhabitants over 300 years. Recreated period rooms, street and displays show how rural people lived, worked and played. Exhibitions Uwe Wittwer: In The Middle Distance Abbot Hall 18 January - 16 March

Abbot Hall Art Gallery’s first exhibition of 2013 showcases the dazzling images of Zurich-based artist Uwe Wittwer (b.1954). His brilliantly executed paintings and large-scale prints explore complex themes through the transformation and distortion of European and British old master paintings by artists such as Hogarth, Gainsborough, Watteau, Constable and de Hooch. Towering over the exhibition will be a dramatic and ambitious full-size version of Abbot Hall’s enormous seventeenthcentury triptych, The Great Picture, along with an elaborate and intriguing multi-part watercolour series based on cult 1960s film, Blow-Up.

Lynn Chadwick, Iron Sculpture, 1953 Supported by
Lynn Chadwick (1914-2003) was one of the most important British sculptors of the twentieth century. Chadwick brought an exciting and innovative approach to the construction of his sculptures, working with welded metal to create dramatic and distinctive forms underpinned by a brilliant sense of design. This exhibition, devised in close collaboration with the Lynn Chadwick Estate and Osborne Samuel Gallery, is showing at Abbot Hall and both inside and on the lawns at Blackwell. It will provide a significant opportunity to experience key works from all phases of Chadwick’s career, from the earliest abstract mobiles and remarkable human/beast/machine hybrid metal constructions of the 1950s and 1960s, through to the imposing, monumental figures of his late period.

Gallery displays Percy Kelly Abbot Hall 18 January - 1 April
Percy Kelly Fellside, Caldbeck, Cumberland 1968
It is said that Percy Kelly (1918-93) could hold a pencil before he could walk. Born in Workington, Cumbria, Kelly began his career as a postman, occasionally drawing on the letters he had to deliver. He drew everyday and on anything he could find - plastic plates, the back of cereal packets and envelopes to name only a few of his outputs. Over his career he amassed a vast body of work and his Norfolk cottage was stuffed with his drawings, Kelly preferring to live in poverty than to sell any of his work. This display brings together his exquisite artwork alongside his distinctive illustrated letters from the Lakeland Arts Trust collection.
Modern Materials: Abbot Hall’s British Sculpture Collection Abbot Hall 4 April - 30 June This display, featuring rarely seen works from the Lakeland Arts Trust’s permanent collection, will show that there is more to sculpture than just bronze and marble. Whether it is the slate obelisk of Ian Hamilton Finlay’s Corday Lux, the polished steel of Richard Wentworth’s humorous Half a mo or the infinite possibilities presented by Li Yuan-Chia’s experimental magnetic sculpture, the variety of materials and approaches in this wonderfully diverse selection demonstrates how inventive British sculpture can be. Picasso’s Tête de Femme Abbot Hall 3 April - 19 October This tiny bronze sculpture is an incredibly rare cast of Picasso’s 1906 copper relief, depicting a strongly-stylised head of a woman, from one of the artist’s most intensely creative periods. The Lakeland Arts Trust is thrilled to have been lent this fascinating sculpture on long term loan, giving visitors the opportunity to glimpse a moment of this modern master’s creative genius as he worked towards his first iconic masterpiece, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon of 1907.

This small bronze will be displayed alongside works from the Lakeland Arts Trust’s modern collection, highlighting the influence that Picasso exerted on his contemporaries.
Museum Display Welcome Aboard: Boating on Windermere Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry Friday 8 February - Sunday 7 July The easily overlooked treasures of museum collections often paint the most vivid pictures. In this display we are bringing boating on Windermere to life, through beautiful dinner services used for fine dining on board, to oil cans used to keep elegant steam launches whisperquiet. Together with historical photographs and costume we are giving you a glimpse of the stories that will be told in the new Windermere Steamboat Museum when it opens in 2015.

How do you form an opinion about Art? It’s not easy. How do you write, or blog about art and let others know? Difficult. We are delighted to welcome art critic Estelle Lovatt to Abbot Hall to let us in to the secret of reviewing art and blogging about it. This will be an entertaining talk about Estelle’s work, but also an industry inside into how the art world ticks. Estelle has the unique experience of both sides of the canvas; having trained as a painter and read art history Estelle is able to judge works of art with expert opinion. Estelle is the art and exhibition reviewer for BBC Radio 2’s flagship arts programme, The Arts Show with Claudia Winkleman, and writes for numerous art magazines and newspapers including Art of England magazine.

Having lived as a recluse for almost 40 years few people could believe what was discovered when the contents of the house were finally revealed. Despite his apparent seclusion Joash had painted and drawn throughout his life, filling the rooms of the normal suburban semi with over 700 paintings, 3000 drawings and hundreds and hundreds of books. Join Small Things to discover an extraordinary story inspired by one man’s unstoppable drive to create and the equally unstoppable support of his family that made his artistic life a reality.

Windermere Steamboat Museum We are in the middle of a major redevelopment project at Windermere Steamboat Museum, with Heritage Lottery Fund support. About Blackwell Blackwell was designed by Arts & Crafts architect M H Baillie Scott as a holiday home for Sir Edward Holt. The house is a wonderful combination of architecture, craft and the applied arts. These elements, together with the garden terraces and its setting in one of the Lake District’s most spectacular positions, create a beautiful and exciting exhibition venue. Exhibitions New Glass - Ancient Skill, Contemporary Artform Blackwell 31 January - 12 May The Lakeland Arts Trust and Contemporary Glass Society have worked in partnership to create this vibrant exhibition exploring the skill of the contemporary glassmaker. Held in the unique setting of Blackwell, this exhibition gives makers the opportunity to showcase the best of their skills and artistic vision. Our retrospective of the celebrated British sculptor, Lynn Chadwick, is spread across two Lakeland Arts Trust sites, with early and mid-career works being shown at Abbot Hall and a selection of his late, monumental sculptures installed on the lawns at Blackwell. These impressive and imposing figures will be viewed against the dramatic backdrop of the Lake District fells, their towering, majestic forms interacting with the surrounding landscape. Inside at Blackwell will be an exhibition of domestic-scaled sculpture by Chadwick, completing what promises to be a spectacular journey through the career of this brilliant and innovative artist.

Exhibitions Bodil Manz Blackwell 24 May - 1 September Bodil Manz’s work utilises the gentle fragility of egg shell porcelain and dominance of utilitarian white and block colour to create breathtaking ceramic vessels. Her near paper thin cast porcelain cylinders are so translucent that you can often discern the light and shadow passing through both walls of a pot, blending interior with exterior.

Displays Edwardian Elegance Blackwell 31 January - 21 March Blackwell, the Holt family’s country retreat, was a place of rest and relaxation where the family could enjoy a leisured life. This display marks an era of extravagant living, cut short by the First World War, with a display of elegant costume and accessories from 1900-10.
New to Blackwell in 2013 There are changes afoot. Blackwell will reopen with a new quilt on display in the Jocelyn Morton room kindly loaned from the Gawthorpe Textile Collection. Dating from 1911, this vibrant red patchwork quilt contains a ‘fan’ design enclosing many different striped and floral prints. Downstairs, in the dining room, we welcome some new Baillie Scott furniture. An exquisite sideboard and chairs will refresh the room adding to our collection of Baillie Scott furniture at Blackwell.

Exhibiting artist Heather Gillespie is one of the small handful. Heather talks about the special nature of using this technique in her contemporary practice, and shows you her wheel in action (she may even let you have a go).

If you have a passion to create beautiful objects in an equally stunning building, then we might have the workshop here for you. All workshops include entry to the house, materials for the workshop and a full day workshop with an artist. Eric Knowles is one of those rare individuals who is able to share his extensive knowledge of the world of antiques in a manner that is easily understood. With over 20 years working on the BBC’s flagship programme The Antiques Roadshow under his belt, Eric has become the friendly face of what for many years proved to be a business shrouded with no small element of mystery. In Antique Antics, the lad from Lancashire takes the wraps off a business in which he has been immersed for over 30 years. The first part of the evening is given over to what are quite often irreverent anecdotal reminiscences, ably supported by excellent images. The second part of the evening is devoted to the audience’s ‘treasures’, 25 of which have been selected by Eric during the initial meeting and greeting session and welcome party. Eric is keen to assure all those bringing heirlooms that he for one will be drinking only Adam’s Ale until all are safely returned!

Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House Windermere Steamboat Museum By Car: Blackwell is situated just off the A5074 on the B5360 and is signposted with blue RAC direction signs. The Windermere Steamboat Museum is situated on the A592, between Bowness-on-Windermere and the A591.
Abbot Hall Art Gallery Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry By Car: Abbot Hall and the Museum is situated on the one way system in the south of the town centre, just past the parish church. By Public Transport: Oxenholme is the nearest main-line railway station and a connecting train will bring you into Kendal (less than 1 mile away from Abbot Hall) with a level walk along the river.
