What’s On Lakeland Arts Spring 2016

Welcome to spring at a unique gallery, museum and historic house

Lakeland Arts offers you a warm welcome to Abbot Hall Art Gallery, the Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry in Kendal and Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House, Bowness-onWindermere. We hope you will come and visit us this spring to see the exciting exhibitions and enjoy the events, talks and family activities. Abbot Hall is an award winning Art Gallery and Kendal’s finest historic house. The exhibitions in 2016 include works by European masters, great British artists and artists with strong associations with Cumbria. The Georgian rooms feature works by eighteenth and nineteenth century painters including George Romney, one of the greatest portrait painters of the period. Abbot Hall’s coach house and stables are home to the Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry, or MOLLI, as we affectionately call the Museum. Recreated period rooms and trade workshops show how local people lived, worked and played. Families love the vintage street and the colourful shops. Abbot Hall park and children’s play area is next door. Overlooking Windermere is Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House, one of the best Arts and Crafts houses in the world. We invite you to relax and soak up the atmosphere of the house and magnificent lake view. Come and learn about the people who made Blackwell their home. Leave time to treat yourself to lunch, freshly baked scones and cakes in the Tea Room and to browse the Contemporary Craft Shop to find the perfect gift or something to treasure. We hope you enjoy your visit and return again and again. Gordon Watson Chief Executive

Exhibitions Canaletto: Celebrating Britain Continues until 14 February This will be the final opportunity to see these outstanding paintings and drawings by Canaletto that have been brought together as an overview of the artist’s time in Britain. It features significant works on loan from major collections, including the Royal Collection Trust, the British Museum, Compton Verney and Dulwich Picture Gallery, as well as private lenders. Sponsored by

The National Gallery Masterpiece Tour: Rembrandt, Self Portrait at the Age of 63 19 March - 15 May Thursday 21 April and Thursday 12 May Late night opening until 8pm This work was painted in the final year of Rembrandt’s life and is one of his last pictures. Rembrandt painted more self portraits than any other artist of the seventeenth century. In this late picture, the artist wears a deep red coat and a beret, his hands clasped before him. The viewer is confronted by his steady gaze. Rembrandt painted and etched self portraits throughout his life, but those executed in his final years, in which he presents himself in a reflective mood, are among the most poignant and challenging. ‘This is not like looking at a painting. It is like meeting Rembrandt. You have no idea what to say to him, and fear what he is about to say to you’. Jonathan Jones, Critic, The Guardian. Sponsored by

The Changing Face of Lady Anne Clifford 19 March - 15 May While Rembrandt is on display we are showing works from our own collection of Lady Anne Clifford who was alive at the same time as Rembrandt. Also on display will be the monumental The Great Picture triptych painted in 1646 featuring Lady Anne’s family history and accomplishments. Follow us on twitter: @lakelandarts

Laura Ford: Seen and Unseen 11 March - 25 June Also at Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House: 11 March - 4 September (see page 11) Laura Ford is one of Britain’s most original sculptors and is well-known for her portrayals of animals, through which she explores aspects of the human condition - although, in fact, Ford describes her own work as sculptures dressed as people who are dressed as animals. Deploying a nightmarish imagination she uses humour and acute observation to engage with social and political issues. Abbot Hall’s classically-proportioned Georgian galleries will provide a perfect foil for Ford’s startling creations: works, such as the fur-clad Medieval Cloud Girls skulk in Abbot Hall’s opulent silk-lined saloon, creating a somewhat less jubilant counterpoint to the dancing children in George Romney’s The Gower Family. Ford will be showing a new series of sculptures that explore the dynamics of couples - their strengths, their weaknesses, their glory and their madness. The works are personal and particular but, at the same time, reference the

historical couples represented in the sculpture and painting of ancient Greece and Rome, the Renaissance and the early twentieth century. This exhibition is a collaboration between Lakeland Arts, Strawberry Hill House and the New Art Centre, Roche Court with support from Arts Council England. Watercolour Gallery Permanent display

The Lakeland Arts Trust has a superb collection of late-eighteenth and earlynineteenth century British watercolours comprising masterpieces by artists such as JMW Turner, John Constable, Joseph Wright of Derby and John Robert Cozens. A regularly-changing selection of works on paper from this extensive collection will be on display in the Watercolour Gallery throughout the spring. Check the website for more details. Displays Recreated period rooms and the workshops of lost trades reveal how rural people lived, worked and played Take a walk down our vintage street scene gazing into colourful shop windows and pay a visit to our chemist and toy shop. Explore an eighteenth century farmhouse kitchen, a townhouse parlour and a bedroom full of vernacular furniture and furnishings. Visit our industry galleries to learn about farming and other local trades. Permanent Displays: Stories of the people who have left their mark on the area Arthur Ransome is best known for writing the exciting Swallows & Amazons series of books. You can learn about his varied and interesting life as fisherman, sailor, journalist and perhaps even spy in our Ransome Room. In the Arts and Crafts gallery, learn how the movement flourished in the Lake District with hand crafted furniture by Arthur Simpson and Stanley Webb Davies, exquisite textiles from Annie Garnett’s famous workshop, The Spinnery, and metalwork from the Keswick School of Industrial Arts. Yards of Industry: The Working Life of Kendal’s Yards 13 February - 3 September The yards of Kendal are a unique part of the town’s history, once bustling patches of life and industry they still shape the distinctive feel of the town today. This display looks at the history of these unique spaces. How did they come about, and how did they get their names? Who lived and worked there? We look at the industries that flourished in the yards and bring together dozens of objects to illustrate these stories.

Exhibitions Laura Ford: Sculpture and Drawings 11 March - 4 September Also at Abbot Hall Art Gallery: 11 March - 25 June (see page 6) Ford’s work sits particularly well in domestic interiors. Blackwell’s warm, richly-carved Arts & Crafts rooms provide a perfect foil for Ford’s startling creations: works, such as Armour Boys, lie crumpled in Blackwell’s baronial Main Hall and a shaggy bronze beast, Old Nick, plays a devilish tune by the fireplace in the Dining Room. Outside, a series of recent bronze sculptures, Days of Judgement pace the south lawn at Blackwell in various states of deep thought, these cats appear like a group of existential poets gripped by their own inner anxieties The cats, prowling in the grounds against the spectacular backdrop of the Coniston fells, generate an atmosphere of courtliness but their featureless faces convey an uncanny blankness onto which we are able to project our own concerns. Elsewhere, it might appear that Beatrix Potter’s much-loved Lakeland characters have fallen on hard times, with a Mrs Tiggy-Winkle-like hedgehog transformed into a bronze bag lady, and a badger who has resorted to foraging in dustbins.

Consumers’ Corner: Richard Slee and Carol McNicoll On display throughout Spring Select work by two of Britain’s most important contemporary ceramic artists are on display at Blackwell this spring. Carol McNicoll was part of the ‘New Ceramics’ group, along with fellow makers such as Richard Slee, introduced a radical element to ceramics in reaction to the austerity and minimalism of more traditional potters such as Bernard Leach. Slee makes the functional unusable, and imbues his brilliantly-crafted objects with a surreal and subversive British humour. His exuberant ceramics take the rich, sometimes garish, hues of children’s toys and plastic goods as the inspiration for their lustrous glaze. McNicoll’s work is subversive yet, unlike Slee, often remains functional. Her use of recycled materials can be read as a reaction to, and critique of, our throwaway consumerist culture. Side by side they are a colourful contrast to the Fifty Shades of White ceramics on display at the beginning of the year.

The exhibition also highlights other aspects of Laura Ford’s practice such as her ceramic works, including Bear, In Remembrance and Needy Greedy, along with new ceramics made in direct response to Blackwell which fit brilliantly with Lakeland Arts’ collection of historic and contemporary pottery. This association is taken a step further through the artist’s series of prints inspired by the most celebrated of the Arts & Crafts ceramicists, William De Morgan, whose lustrous tiles adorn many of Blackwell’s fireplaces. The show also presents other graphic works, in which Ford not only explores ideas and variations relating to her sculpture but also allows her imagination to run free, creating delicate line drawings and vivid watercolours that exist as finished artworks in their own right.

Displays Fifty Shades of White On display until 28 February From the winter snows cloaking the Lakeland Fells to the elegant simplicity of Blackwell’s whitewashed exterior and the meditative calm of the White Drawing Room, white will challenge your senses. Fifty Shades of White brings together a selection of vessels and ceramics from Lakeland Arts’ collections. It includes makers from around the world, such as Taiwanese potter Chun Liao, Danish ceramicists Bodil Manz and Inger Rokkjaer, London-based Japanese maker Nao Matsunaga, and master potter Edmund de Waal. John Harden: Artist of Leisure On display until March John Harden was an accomplished amateur artist who lived in the Lake District for over 40 years. The brilliantly executed drawings in this display provide a uniquely fascinating and entertaining insight into the everyday lives of the Hardens and their acquaintances on the shores of Windermere and inside their homes in Ambleside and Edinburgh. The Baillie Scott Folio: House for an Art Lover On display until March In the December 1900 issue of an influential German publication, Journal of Interior Decoration, a competition was announced to encourage new thinking in modern design; competitors were to design a large country house for an art lover. Baillie Scott’s entry included many designs which had proved highly successful in his ambitious recent commission, Blackwell. This is an opportunity to see Baillie Scott’s entry which was awarded the highest prize, praised for the ‘surpassing artistic quality of the interior arrangement’.
