Displays from the Permanent Collection and Spotlight Talks
David Hockney, The Arrival
David Hockney: A Rake’s Progress 1 June - 9 September In A Rake’s Progress (1961-3), David Hockney wittily transposes Hogarth’s famous eighteenth-century depiction of the rise and fall of Tom Rakewell to the swinging sixties, showing a fanciful version of the artist’s own fortunes and trials during his time spent in New York. Hockney’s suite of 16 etchings was a key early acquisition for Abbot Hall, and this display provides a rare opportunity for visitors to see the entire narrative unfold, from The Arrival to Bedlam. Spotlight Talk on David Hockney A Rake’s Progress Friday 13 & 27 July at 2.00pm This talk examines in more detail the story behind the etchings in relation to Hockney’s career and to Hogarth’s originals. Spotlight talks last 20 minutes and are free with gallery admission.

Keith Vaughan, Three Figures, 1960-61
Keith Vaughan: Figures 12 September - 22 December After an early association with NeoRomanticism, Keith Vaughan (1912-77) started to draw on other styles, such as cubism and abstract expressionism, in order to develop his own unique vocabulary centred on the male figure. This year, the Lakeland Arts Trust was awarded two paintings by the Contemporary Art Society from the bequest of Dr Ronald Lande, which, together with the works by Vaughan from the same period already in the Trust’s collection, form a fascinating insight into the artist’s preoccupations at a particular moment in time. This display reappraises this underrated and increasingly important modern artist in the centenary of his birth.
Free admission for children up to 16 and full-time students
The Great Picture Triptych On display throughout 2012 This enormous seventeenth-century triptych was acquired by the Lakeland Arts Trust in 1981. The large central section has been reunited with the side panels, allowing visitors the opportunity to experience the full impact of this magnificent and unique masterpiece.
The Great Books of Lady Anne Clifford 16 May - 2 September Thanks to the generosity of Cumbria Archive Service, we are displaying one volume of the Great Books of Record alongside The Great Picture. Compiled with the close involvement of Lady Anne herself – whose handwritten annotations grace the margins on a number of pages - these extraordinary manuscripts served as an illustrated compendium of all the documents relating to the Clifford family.

Edward Lear, Keswick, 1836
Around the Lakes with Edward Lear 4 July - 22 December Abbot Hall has an exceptional collection of late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century English watercolours, including works by the great Victorian eccentric, artist and nonsense poet, Edward Lear (1812-88). This display, which marks the bicentenary of Lear’s birth, includes four watercolours and drawings by him and beautiful works by the itinerant artists whose explorations of the picturesque Lakeland scenery inspired Lear when he toured Cumberland in 1836.
Spotlight Talk on Bridget Riley Conversation Friday 10 & 24 August at 2.00pm Riley’s shimmering, dynamic painting is one of the most popular works in Abbot Hall’s modern collection. This talk looks at the picture in the context of Riley’s early career as a leading Op Artist and explores how apparently simple forms and colours are arranged with great artistry and precision to create a complex work of enduring appeal. Spotlight talks last 20 minutes and are free with gallery admission.

Displays and Film Installation
Helen Pett’s at the Merzbarn

‘Throw them up and let them sing…’
Kurt Schwitters
15 September - 19 November
Abbot Hall has a wonderful collection of works by Schwitters which will be shown alongside Petts’ poetic and inspirational film, highlighting the power that the German artist still exerts on contemporary artists and musicians.
Helen Petts’ film response to the life and work of artist Kurt Schwitters explores landscape, rhythm, texture, sound, improvisation and walking, using footage shot in locations that were a major inspiration to Schwitters: Norway, where he holidayed and first escaped to as a refugee from Nazi Germany and Loughrigg Fell, Rydal Terrace and the Merzbarn in the Lake District, where he spent the last few years of his life. The film - a gallery installation with surround sound - is shot on a variety of small digital cameras and features musicians improvising with found objects, as well as images of the fells, footpaths, caves and lakes that Schwitters loved and featured in his work. The title is what Schwitters said he did with his ‘merz material’ when making the collages.
15 September - 19 November
Work in Progress 1 August - 22 December Prior to opening its doors for the first time in September 1962, Abbot Hall Art Gallery worked with architect Michael Bunney to restore the rooms downstairs to their former Georgian glory. This selection of fascinating and evocative photographs from the archive will be displayed in the actual locations depicted, allowing viewers to see first-hand the remarkable transformation that took place 50 years ago.

Marion Kuit has recently exhibited at Mall Gallery in London, Open up North, Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and Grizedale Forest. These reduction lino prints, made on a nineteenth-century Columbian press, show the life cycle of sheep over 12 months: December ewes have all been ‘tupped’ and the future is sealed; January is a battle with the elements; July brings shearing and once again the animals lose individuality. The restricted colours help to avoid sentimentalising a clichéd subject. To achieve these elusive moods, each print consists of several overprints of transparent inks. Joseph Hardman (1893 - 1972): Winter in the Lake District 2 October 22 December Free admission Joseph Hardman was born in Radcliffe near Manchester. He started work in a factory when he was a child, but moved to Kendal in 1911. After joining the local photographic society, his interest in photography grew, and for the last 30 years of his life he travelled to every part of the Lake District by taxi as a freelance photographer. His images were widely printed in the local press and have recorded a way of life that was fast disappearing by the mid-twentieth century.

Blackwell The Arts & Crafts House
Baillie Scott armchair (one of a pair)
Blackwell was designed by Arts & Crafts architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott (18651945) as a holiday home for Sir Edward Holt. The house itself is a wonderful combination of architecture and craft. These elements, together with the restored garden terraces and its setting in one of the Lake District’s most spectacular positions, create one of the most beautiful and exciting exhibition venues in the country. In order to bring Blackwell to life and reawaken the interiors, furniture and applied arts have been purchased and borrowed from several large collections. Currently on display are a recently acquired and rare pair of armchairs designed by MH Baillie Scott. The chairs, made in oak with inlaid decoration of harebells, are in wonderful condition and retain their original leather seats. The simplicity of their design, as with much of Baillie Scott’s furniture, is deceptively modern and exemplifies the Arts & Crafts principle that good design is timeless.

From Rossetti to Voysey: Arts & Crafts Stamped Cloth Book Cover Design
Light Structures: New Work by Halima Cassell
10 May - 15 July This exhibition, the first of its kind in the UK, brings together books with case-bound cloth covers by well-known artists and designers, published between 1866 and 1911 and issued by commercial publishers. The featured designers read like a roll-call of the leading names of the day, including: DG Rossetti, William Morris, Philip Webb, Charles Ricketts, Walter Crane, Laurence Housman and Gleeson White.
Halima Cassell is one of the UK’s most exciting ceramic artists. This solo exhibition presents new work created in response to Blackwell. Working in stone, porcelain and glass as well as her signature clay bodies, Halima has created a body of work to include relief wall panels, sculptural forms and the bowl-like vessels for which she is best known. The show will also feature new relief wallpaper developed to Halima’s designs by Graham & Brown.
The covers have been selected on the grounds of their style and for the proximity of their designers to the core of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Most of the designers included had work shown at the Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society; four were Masters of the Art Workers Guild.
Halima’s work is informed by geometry and organic forms which reflect many of the decorative elements at Blackwell. Her work is characterised by high-relief carving, and the play of light and shadow on the forms she creates reflects the way in which natural light dramatises and animates the house.

Sculptural Installation
Arts & Crafts Enamel: Lydia Cooke 19 October 31 December
Lydia Cooke
An exhibition of Arts & Crafts jewellery, enamel-work plaques, and designs by Lydia Cooke, a Birmingham-based craftswoman whose work embodied beautiful design and exquisite workmanship. The Arts & Crafts period saw a revival in enamelling techniques, and enamel became one of the defining features of Arts & Crafts jewellery and metalwork. From 1906, Cooke attended the Municipal School for Jewellers and Silversmiths, a branch of the Birmingham School of Art, where she excelled; her talent was reflected by the prizes she was awarded. She went on to exhibit internationally, participating in the international exhibitions at Ghent in 1913, Paris in 1914 and the British Empire Exhibition in 1924. Examples of her work were acquired by the Victoria & Albert Museum. This collection has rarely been exhibited, and presents an opportunity to see a body of work by a designer-maker now virtually unknown, but widely appreciated in her own day. The exhibition also includes pieces made by a selection of today’s enamel specialists, showing how new and exciting ways of working with this magical medium have evolved.

Laura Ellen Bacon’s Exposed
Exposed: A Sculptural Installation by Laura Ellen Bacon On display until 30 September Laura Ellen Bacon has created an installation of two large-scale works in red willow. These pieces have been developed in direct response to Laura’s knowledge and experience of Blackwell, its landscape and environment. These dramatic, curvaceous structures appear bonded to the building and the retaining wall of one of the garden terraces. The form of these two ‘clinging’ structures, which span two floors of the external elevation, emphasises their fragility against the permanence of the house. Laura Ellen Bacon was selected as a Jerwood Contemporary Maker 2010. Her work is site-specific and ecologically sound; she creates large scale ‘morphing’ structures, most often woven in willow or other coppiced materials.

FREE with admission Book-covers Roadshow with Malcolm Haslam Friday 15 June 2.00-4.00pm
Malcolm will be back at Blackwell for this unusual event. Have you ever wondered who was behind the design of your old book-covers? If they are from between 1870 and 1914, bring your books (up to five only please!) to Blackwell and he will give you his expert opinion. Please note: Malcolm will not be providing valuations.
Paul Atterbury specialises in the art, architecture, design and decorative arts of the nineteenth and twentieth-centuries. He is the author of over 30 books and a member of the Antiques Roadshow team of experts. From the 1870s, the design and production of decorative pottery in Britain was radically changed by the impact of the Arts & Crafts movement, with its emphasis on individual creativity and handcraft techniques. Influenced initially by major names such as Minton and Doulton, along with famous names such as William de Morgan and Christopher Dresser, small art potteries sprang up all over Britain, making the most of a new generation of male and female artists and designers. Abbot Hall at Blackwell 19 October - 31 December The fiftieth anniversary of Abbot Hall Art Gallery has presented us with the perfect excuse for unearthing many of the littleseen treasures from the Lakeland Arts Trust stores. When Blackwell was restored in 1999-2001, a number of the former bedrooms were redesigned as gallery rooms; these retain the character of domestic spaces, with architectural features such as fireplaces and windows providing a unique gallery setting. For this display, the intimate, semi-domestic Arts & Crafts interiors of Blackwell offer the perfect environment for viewing a selection of late-Victorian and Edwardian works from the Abbot Hall collection, including paintings and works on paper by artists such as Alfred Heaton Cooper, WG Collingwood, James Hamilton Hay and John Ruskin.

After 6 miles arrive at a T junction at the bottom of a hill, turn left on to the A5074 (Lyth Valley Road). Follow the blue RAC signs and after 1/2 mile fork right on to the B5360. Blackwell is 100 metres on the right.
From the North: Leave the M6 at junction 39 and follow the A6 signed ‘Kendal’. Once in Kendal follow signs for ‘M6 Junction 36’ and ‘A65’. Keep right, following the river, until the road comes to a junction. Still keeping in the right hand lane cross the bridge and take a sharp right, signed ‘Town Centre’. Stay in the right hand lane. Pass the parish church, on your right, then take the first right into the public car park signed ‘Abbot Hall’. Pass through the gate into the Abbot Hall car park.
