What’s On Summer 2016 Abbot Hall Art Gallery Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House Windermere Jetty, Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories

Abbot Hall Art Gallery Discover Kendal’s finest historic house and award-winning art gallery. Exhibitions showcase a variety of works by a wealth of national and international artists. Georgian period rooms allow you to glimpse what life was like in another time and provide views of the River Kent and Kendal Castle. Linger in the Look, Explore, Create gallery, explore the exhibition spaces and come to one of our popular events. Families can learn together with trails and discovery bags, which contain everything needed to investigate the art works. Abbot Hall park and children’s play area are right next door.

Displays Watercolour Gallery Until 5 November Masterpieces on show by JMW Turner, John Constable, Joseph Wright of Derby and John Robert Cozens - artists who all took inspiration from the sublime and picturesque landscapes of the Lake District. London Legacy: Auerbach, Andrews and Freud 25 May - 19 October Lucian Freud was one of Britain’s greatest painters and Lakeland Arts has acquired three new art works from the artist’s collection. Alongside works by Freud’s great friend, Frank Auerbach, and his School of London associate, Michael Andrews, the exhibition includes figurative paintings by artists directly influenced by them, such as RB Kitaj and Tony Bevan.

2

Kurt Schwitters: Creator of MERZ Rehung for 2016 German refugee, Kurt Schwitters, died in Kendal in 1948 and is today recognised as one of the most important and influential artists of the twentieth century. This expanded display showcases works by Schwitters from Lakeland Arts’ small, but wonderfully varied collection of paintings, collages, sculpture and drawings. Paul Jenkins (1923-2012) 27 October - January 2017 Employing an unorthodox approach to paint application, Paul Jenkins is as much identified with the process of controlled paint-pouring and canvas manipulation as with the gem-like veils of transparent and translucent colour which have defined his work since the late 1950s.

Exhibitions Laura Ford: Seen and Unseen 11 March - 25 June Laura Ford is one of Britain’s most original sculptors and is well-known for her portrayals of animals, through which she explores aspects of the human condition. Deploying a nightmarish imagination, she uses humour and acute observation to engage with social and political issues. Abbot Hall’s Georgian galleries provide a perfect foil for Ford’s startling creations which reference art history, popular culture and the artist’s own experiences. This exhibition is a collaboration between Lakeland Arts, Strawberry Hill House and the New Art Centre, Roche Court with support from Arts Council England. Summer Exhibition Winifred Nicholson in Cumberland 8 July - 15 October Immerse yourself in the vibrancy of the paintings Winifred Nicholson made in Cumberland, where she lived for large parts of her life. Many of the artworks have never been publicly exhibited – until now! The exhibition features some of her best-loved paintings, plus previously unseen archival material. A very special exhibition – the highlight of the Lake District’s summer season. Sponsored by

Exhibitions

Chris Keenan: “stuff i live with; stuff i love” 29 July - 4 Sept

Laura Ford: Seen and Unseen 11 March - 25 June (Sculptures outside until 4 September) The down-and-out urban cousins of Beatrix Potter’s best-loved characters, skinny cats, boys in Medieval suits of armour, and a host of Ford’s fabulous creations have taken up residence at Blackwell. Together with Ford’s extended show at Abbot Hall, this exhibition presents a unique opportunity to experience the artist’s startling sculpture, ceramics and works on paper in a thoroughly unique location. Consumers’ Corner: Richard Slee and Carol McNicoll On display until 10 July This display brings together work by two of Britain’s most important contemporary ceramic artists. Carol McNicoll was part of the ‘New Ceramics’ group, and with fellow makers such as Richard Slee, introduced a radical element to ceramics in reaction to the austerity and minimalism of more traditional potters.. Nicola Jarvis Studio presents: The Art of Embroidery Blackwell Tea Room 26 May - 8 September Inspired by the iconic drawings, textile designs and embroideries of William Morris and his daughter May, Jarvis has combined her love of nature and English embroidery to create this collection of intricate drawings, prints and exquisite textiles.

For this installation potter Chris Keenan applies William Morris’ dictum - ‘have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful’ - and presents a selection of his personal “stuff” which, from being looked at, handled and used, makes his domestic life better. Each piece - from a wooden heart to a bashed tin cup - comes with a brief narrative that illuminates its significance for him. Christian Barnes: A Bathymetric Atlas of the Lake District 10 - 17 September This amazing atlas is a giant hand-made book measuring 120 x 120 cm, that reveals the hidden contours of lakes in the English Lake District at a scale of 1:41250. The work will be shown in the beautiful barrel-vaulted Oliver Thompson Gallery and its pristine white pages will be turned daily by trained volunteers during its week-long performance. Spinning the Colours of Lakeland: Annie Garnett’s Spinnery, textiles and garden 24 September - 29 January 2017 Annie Garnett, the Arts and Crafts textile designer and entrepreneur, became a key figure in the revival of hand spinning and weaving in the Lake District. The exhibition includes examples of her designs for silks, embroideries and textiles and explores the inspiration she took from the Lake District.

Chris Keenan: houseplace 29 July - 9 October ‘Blackwell took up residence in my mind over a decade ago when I first exhibited in the house. And, fortunately, it has never moved out. ‘houseplace’ is my response to this extraordinary and mind-consuming house and the man, MH Baillie Scott, behind its creation.’ houseplace is the result of a residency undertaken by potter Chris Keenan at Blackwell in early 2016 organised jointly by the Craft Potters Association and Lakeland Arts, funded by the Headley Trust.
