FROM THE HELM by Bing O’Meara

A Time for Remembrance

JULY 2015 | VOLUME LXIX, NO. 7 PUBLISHER Walter “Bing” O’Meara

Celebrating the life of an industry icon and those lost in the SS Eastland tragedy.

C

hicago’s greatest loss of life, an unimaginable tragedy that many people are not even aware of, is the capsizing of the SS Eastland in the Chicago River on July 24, 1915. It took the lives of 844 people. This July marks the 100th anniversary of the tragic event, and Lakeland’s editor-at-large Heather Steinberger has powerfully captured the historical account (pg. 42). The boating industry has experienced another devastating loss, with the passing of Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales’ owner Greg Krueger (pg. 14). He was an industry icon; a tireless advocate for marine education and a close friend to many of our readers, and he will be deeply missed. Being our July issue, the halfway point of summer when temperatures are (fingers crossed) fitting for a proper boating adventure, we have placed emphasis on trailerable boats. The boats we explore in this month’s tests and spotlights allow boaters to highlight new Great Lakes destinations that are perfect for memorable family outings (starts on pg. 26). One specific destination is E.J. Mertaugh Boat Works, a well-known name for those of us with a thing for wooden boats. The company is located in Hessel, Michigan, in the heart of the Les Cheneaux Islands, a place where you can turn back time and simply relax on the water. What a great place to be for the Koster family — they own E.J. Mertaugh — to raise their kids and shepherd a 90-year-old business selling and maintaining boats that make people happy. Frequent Lakeland contributor Craig Ritchie has captured the essence of this community in his profile on the reputable company (pg. 38). Also check out our feature on another Hessel destination, the Les Cheneaux Culinary School and Restaurant (pg. 18), which offers delicious fare with a local, hands-on flare. Lakeland contributor Kim Schneider is our very own tour guide for Lake Winnebago and the surrounding communities in this month’s Port of Call (pg. 46). I’ve been boating and fishing on Lake Winnebago several times over the years, but I had no idea that the lake measurements were as large as they are (28 miles by 10 miles), or that the events and festivals were so numerous (more than 1,000). I hope you will be able to take the magazine aboard this summer and read it on deck; a nice pay back to the winter that would not end. See you on the water,

LUCY Our “princess” King Charles Spaniel, Lucy, cringed and stood shaking on the dock next to our 28-foot boat. She was just two years old and had an aversion to anything that made engine noise. My husband, John, gently lifted her onto the deck of the boat, enticing her with a treat to sniff around and get her sea legs. She eventually stopped shaking, and John revved up the engines while I cast off the lines. As we left the marina to cruise a few of the Lake Erie islands and enjoy the warm air and sunshine, Lucy tiptoed around the deck, distracted by the luscious smell from the fishing net and the night crawler remains from our fishing excursions. I usually sat in the co-pilot’s seat and thought Lucy might be less frightened if I held her on my lap so she could see the horizon and the other boats cruising by. I lost my position as co-pilot from that day forward. Lucy commandeered that seat and focused on the instrument panel, performing her duty beside her beloved captain. I was demoted to swabbing the deck and combing through the tangles she acquired in her coat as the wind swirled past her. —Nancy & John Ensley,Ottawa Lake, MI

Greg Krueger 1948-2015 Visionary leader, enthusiastic proponent of marine education, and dear friend to many, Greg Krueger, 67, of Boyne City, Michigan, passed away suddenly from a rare type of heart attack on April 25. “He was vibrant soul, enthusiastic, honest, loving and passionate,” Krueger’s daughter, Amy L. Krueger Malow says. “His zest for life was unparalleled, and it prevailed no matter what his circumstances were.” Owner and president of Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales (JBYS), Krueger was the longest-serving Michigan Boating Industries Association (MBIA) board member and 2011 Hall of Fame Inductee, who led the way in marine education since co-founding the Recreational Boating Industry Education Foundation (RBIEF) in 1986. RBIEF was created to help provide financial support for education, training and professional development in the recreational marine trades. “Education was paramount to my father,” Malow says. “He often said, ‘You can strip a man of many things but you can never take away his education.’ He was firm in his beliefs about the value of continuous learning and professional development.” Krueger was born in 1948 in Detroit, Michigan, and spent most of his youth working in the marine industry, washing, detailing and running boats, overseeing boat yards, and even captaining the Harsens Island Ferry on the North Channel of St. Clair River. He often told his friends, “The course I charted for my life is simple — boating is not just my business, it’s my life.” As a teenager Krueger was in charge of houseboat rentals for Sunset Marina on Harsens Island, Michigan, and later oversaw outboard motor repairs for Krueger’s Boats and Motors, which was owned and operated

He really is a global industry icon.” Krueger is survived by his wife, Judy; children Amy Lynn Krueger Malow and Erik Gregory Krueger; grandchildren, Alayna Nancy Malow, Wade Victor Malow, Samuel Gregory Krueger and Isabel Nina Hutcheson; mother and step-father, Dorothy and Frank Pryg; and sisters Candice (Rob) Voigt and Lisa Irish. “We are steadfast in keeping JBYS alive and well, and are very much able, to furthur leverage my father’s enthusiasm,” Malow says. “Our team [at JBYS] is exceptional and has demonstrated great commitment over the years. That’s what’s unique about our organization: We are our own sustainable family and our people truly value and respect one another, our manufacturers and most certainly our customers. My father fostered this; this is just who we are without exception.” With six Great Lakes locations, JBYS is the oldest Viking Yachts dealer in the world, oldest Sunseeker dealer in the U.S. and among the oldest Princess dealers in the country. U.S. Coast Guard Releases 2014 Boating Report Ohio civil engineering firm KS Associates is helping the city of Huron revitalize a long-neglected piece of Lake Erie waterfront property. The property was once home to Showboat Restaurant, a popular tourist destination that burned down and was vacant for nearly 40 years. The property will be updated with a 368-foot steel bulkhead along the shoreline to protect the site from storms and a concrete walkway.

The U.S. Coast Guard recently released its 2014 Recreational Boating Statistics, revealing the second-lowest number of yearly boating fatalities on record, shortly behind 2013, totaling 610 deaths. The publication states alcohol use was the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents; it was listed as the leading factor in 21 percent of reported deaths. Operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, excessive speed, and alcohol use ranked as the top five primary contributing factors in boating accidents last year. Where the cause of death was known, 78 percent of fatal boating accident victims drowned; of those drowning victims, 84 percent were not wearing a life jacket. Where boating instruction was known, 77 percent of deaths occurred on vessels where the operator had not received boating safety instructions. SHORELEAVE by Kate Bush

Les Cheneaux Culinary School and Restaurant Farm-to-table school offers hands-on classes and fine dining. he charming, 170-year-old village of Hessel is nestled in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where you can navigate through the historic harbors of the 36 Les Cheneaux Islands that stretch along 12 miles of Lake Huron shoreline. Here you’ll find local ingredients such as leeks and morel mushrooms carpeting the forest floor; see farmers steadily working to grow sustainable crops; and now, you’ll have the opportunity to dine and observe students at the Les Cheneaux Culinary School and Restaurant creating sustainable meals while promoting the area’s finest fare.

Promoting local flavors

The Les Cheneaux Culinary School features an outdoor deck overlooking the water (below). Students prepare a buffalo tartare (middle). Students of an ad hoc-class make glissants (bottom).

The boutique culinary school was modeled after the nearby Great Lakes Boat Building School in Cedarville, which offers hands-on, small-scale classrooms, allowing students to transform a simple tree into a beautifully crafted wooden boat. The Les Cheneaux Culinary School and Restaurant is based on the same concept — small classrooms, local ingredients and hands-on philosophy. “We really are a community project here to help boost the local economy by teaching and helping the farmers out, and teaching the whole community as well,” says program

director and executive chef Zach Schroeder. Schroeder, a St. Ignace-area native, graduated from the Great Lakes Culinary Institute in 2007 and went on to work at numerous Michigan restaurants, including Mackinac Island’s Grand Hotel and Battle Creek’s H20, as its executive chef and general manager. “Hessel is a great location for this school,” Schroeder says. “One, because of the natural and beautiful area; and two, the area around Les Cheneaux and Pickford has a lot of farms that produce amazing products that have gone unseen. We want to get the area more well known for its culinary capabilities.”

Hands-on classrooms The non-profit school first opened September 15, 2014 and welcomed its inaugural class of eight students to learn the simple and proper preparation of local foods. At the culinary school, eight months of education are broken up into three semesters: The first semester is an introduction to methods and techniques; the second semester focuses on specialized methods and techniques; and the third semester teaches food and beverage management. Following the third semester, students complete a four-month, onsite internship, preparing meals for guests in the restaurant opening off of the kitchen. A defining component of the boutique culinary school is that there are no more than 12 students in each class, emphasizing class participation and experiential education. The small size and nature of the school allows each student to hone his or her skills in an intimate setting and work at their own pace. “It’s important to have one-on-ones with teachers,” Schroeder says. “Every student is different. Every student starts at a different place in his or her career. Having a hands-on classroom gives me and my other instructor, Ryan Junglas, a chance to meet the needs of each individual, instead of creating a set curriculum.”

Supporting local farmers The main initiative of the culinary school and restaurant — beyond teaching eager students the art of food preparation — is to support local farmers and businesses. The craft of taking sustainable game, fish and produce from local suppliers, including Harrison Bosley’s Farm, Calvin and Betsey Mill’s Farm and Galloway’s Red Clay Ranch, and transforming them into mouthwatering recipes keeps the local economy

healthy and highlights all that Michigan’s UP has to offer. “The most basic way to explain it is that it keeps the money here — it just keeps the money circulating in the local area,” Schroeder says. “It’s sustainable because the longer you ship food, the more it costs our environment because of the fossil fuels that it takes to transport.”

Educating the community Students work in a 5,000-square-foot facility overlooking Hessel’s charming marina with a state-of-the-art kitchen and unique horseshoe demonstration area. During the summer months, students are not the only ones gaining knowledge — guests are invited to see the classroom in action. Patrons get a front-row seat to stunning views of the lake inside a delightful boathouse-themed dining room and deck, as well as a view into the kitchen to watch students prepare their locally-sourced meals. “It’s a teaching facility, so I want all of our patrons to come here with the mentality that everybody is going to be better after the experience; constructive criticism is highly recommended,” Schroeder says. “It’s good for the community to see what we’re doing here and what we’re all about. I would take any criticism anyone has to offer to help us be better. We’re all about getting better every day.” A variety of cooking classes also are offered to the public, where participants are invited to learn the art of Italian pasta making, master the summer cocktail party, and understand how to cure and smoke meats. All the ad-hoc classes are about two to three hours long and cost approximately $50 per person. Throughout the year, the menu will regularly be modified

as seasonal ingredients are phased in and out. The current menu features items such as the charcuterie plate with house-cured duck prosciutto and Michigan-made organic pepperoni, and buffalo tartare seasoned with shallot, garlic and capers, topped with an egg yolk and finished with truffle mist. “My favorite dish on the current menu is the dish that I’ve done for years now — the airline chicken breast,” Schroeder says. “We leave the bone in, and we do that for two reasons: The wing bone holds the skin on and gives the chicken more flavor; and it keeps the meat moist. That dish is served over morel mushrooms with a sage butter sauce and asparagus.” If your mouth isn’t already watering, take a cruise to the serene Northern Michigan islands, tie up and enjoy some seasonal local cuisine prepared with attention to detail. And if you’re feeling adventurous, try your hand at an ad-hoc class, where you’ll get instant gratification as you reap the mighty delicious benefits of your hard work. H

DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier

Tow, Launch, Retrieve Tips and tricks to solve the most common trailerboating conundrums. rom frozen wheel bearings to fish tailing and everything in between, trailering your boat to that pristine spot has the potential to cause more problems than anything that may happen while out on the water. Here’s a look at some of the most common trailerboating issues, as well as some helpful tips on how to keep them from ruining your boating fun.

Horror in the driveway

Capt. Frank Lanier

is an award-winning journalist, boat maintenance guru and owner of Capt. F.K. Lanier & Associates, Marine Surveyors and Consultants (captfklanier.com).

After backing up to the trailer, you grab the trailer jack handle only to have it break off in your hand. If this happens (or the mechanism is rusted solid), use your vehicle jack to help lift the trailer into position. Simply place it beneath a sturdy section of the tongue or frame (as near as possible to the center, behind the trailer jack) and crank away. If it doesn’t have enough reach to lift the trailer tongue to the correct height, use a couple of wood blocks to extend its reach. Once the trailer is connected, you pull out of the driveway and notice the trailer’s left tire is dragging. The likely culprit is a stuck brake, a common issue resulting from corrosion. Unphased, you grab a small mallet and give the offending wheel a few love taps, which dislodges the rust and frees the brake. Another trick is to back up a few feet, brake hard, then pull forward and brake hard. Doing this a couple of times also may get you rollin’ again. Another possible, temporary fix is spraying the rotors with WD-40, which may allow you to limp along until you can find a brake repair shop. While rust is a common cause, there are a number of other problems that can cause a brake to drag — from solenoid trouble to brake cylinder issues. If cylinder problems keep

New to trailerboating and eager to avoid mayhem at the ramp? Practice your launching and retrieval techniques on a quiet day before tackling the weekend boat ramp crowd.

the brake from disengaging, disconnecting the brake line at the receiver/brake cylinder may get you to a repair shop. If no tools are available, another option is to break the brake line. Pick an accessible spot that will be cheap and easy to repair, and make sure you are disconnecting the brakes on both sides of the trailer, not just one. An even better option may be to stop, let the brakes cool, then drive slowly to a repair shop if one is close by. Stop often and let the brakes cool down (so as not to burn out the rotors or drums).

Terror in the streets Once on the open road, you notice the trailer has a tendency to fishtail at highway speeds, particularly when meeting a larger vehicle. Fishtailing is a sideways, seesawing motion typically caused by improper weight distribution — either from equipment loaded in the boat or from a trailer that’s not properly adjusted for the boat/load itself. All conventionally hitched trailers will sway slightly in response to crosswinds or the bow wave caused when meeting that semi. A well-balanced trailer needs little correction by the driver and will quickly re-stabilize; however, a poorly balanced trailer may continue to sway after the force causing the instability has stopped, possibly even increasing in intensity until control is lost. Fishtailing often can be corrected by adjusting weight distribution, so you find a safe place to pull over and reposition your coolers and other gear to improve towing. As part of your stop routine, you touch both hubs and notice the right one is significantly hotter than the left. At first you suspect another dragging brake, but after jacking up the trailer to verify you discover that the wheel spins, but emits a rumbling noise — a common sign of a bad bearing. As a general rule, bearings fail at the worst possible time and location, typically a crowded freeway with 100-plus temps, or at night in some buggy, out-of-the-way area you can hear the strains of banjo music softly wafting through the still night air. The quickest, simplest way to handle this situation is to carry a spare tire with hub and bearings already installed. Short of that, you’ll want to have spare bearings and all of the paraphernalia to both remove the old ones and install the new.

Mayhem at the ramp You make it to the ramp, launch your boat and finally begin to enjoy your day on the water. While heading back to the ramp at day’s end, you wonder what else could possibly go wrong. Well, you’re about to find out. As the ramp finally comes into view, your engine begins to sputter and stall. Thinking quickly, you cleat off a ski rope

F

near the bow and lead it under the railing back to the helm. As you approach the ramp and the engine dies (no surprise there), you toss the ski rope handle to a good Samaritan, who then safely pulls you to the dock. After backing the trailer down the ramp, you begin pulling out the winch strap to help load the boat, but, of course, it breaks — a victim of chafe where it attaches to the rusty hook eyelet. The best way to handle this issue would be to carry a spare strap of the correct size and strength. Lacking that, if the webbing (or cable) is strong and otherwise in good shape, you can tie it to the hook or directly to the bow eye using a bowline or similarly strong knot. If the remainder of the webbing is unusable due to condition or length, a towline, trailer securing strap or length of nylon rope also will work. You reattach the hook with a bowline and winch your boat onto the trailer. But wait; there’s one last obstacle to tackle before the day is done. After hopping into ol’ Blue and throwing her into drive, you hear the whirr of spinning tires and realize you aren’t moving. If the ramp is slick, placing a traction matt or spreading a bucket of coarse sand beneath the tires will help increase traction. If you carry a portable compressor, you also could increase traction by temporarily deflating the rear tires of your tow vehicle to around 15 psi. Another option is adding weight over the drive tires. This is the one advantage of boating with generous-sized folks: Let them sit directly over the rear tires in your truck bed. If you have a tow strap, attach it to the front of your truck and ask that good Samaritan to give you a little tow assist. Like spotting someone while weightlifting, it doesn’t take much assistance to make a big difference. Worst case scenario, you may have to unload the boat from the trailer to get up and out. You should have no issue getting up the ramp once the boat is off the trailer. H

Having dock lines and fenders in position and ready for use prior to heading into the dock is safer and reduces stress. Once loaded, ensure bow hooks and safety chains are in place before pulling your boat up the ramp.

CORKE BOARD by Mark Corke

Flush With Ideas Tips to keep your outboard motor running like clockwork.

O

utboard motors are expensive, so it makes sense to properly care for and look after them. Changing the oil and fuel filters, swapping out spark plugs, servicing the water pump, and changing the gear oil all are considered routine maintenance that should be performed annually at a minimum. Yearly maintenance aside, however, there’s one task that’s almost universally ignored by outboard boat owners: Flushing the engine.

Rush, no flush I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen boat owners turn up back at their marina slip or boat ramp, pull their boats from the water, and seemingly before the propeller has even stopped turning close up shop for the day and head home. It’s a rare occasion that I actually see a boat owner flush his or her engine through with fresh water before calling it quits. While it’s true that Great Lakes boaters don’t face the same issues their saltwater counterparts endure, users of the Sweetwater Seas should still take the time — and every possible precaution — to protect their motors. Mud, silt, sand, weeds and even small bits of shell or other debris take their toll on internal engine parts. These nasty culprits can cause wear in thermostats and water pump impellers. Flushing is probably one of the simplest and cheapest things a boater can do to protect his or her outboard engine(s). It removes contaminates inside that can cause blockages, leading to overheating and possible engine damage. Ideally, engines should be flushed while they’re still hot. Sometimes there’s no alternative than to do it after the engine’s already cooled down, but flushing a warm motor means that the thermostat inside the engine will be open — and any flushing water can get to all the internal parts that it needs to reach.

PHOTOS BY MARK CORKE

Ways to flush You can flush an outboard several ways. One popular method is to use what most folks call “ear muffs,” which are rubber cups attached to a large-leaf spring that clamp around the outside of the lower unit water intakes. One side has a connection for a garden hose, and with the water flowing you can run the engine. If the engine has been allowed to cool prior to flushing, you may have to run it for several minutes before you commence the procedure, allowing the engine to reach the proper operating temperature. A word of caution: Never run the engine without a proper supply of water; you’ll destroy the water pump, not to mention other serious damage that may result. Another way to flush the engine — and the one that I, personally, favor — is to use a large, 50-gallon barrel. Simply lower the engine into it, then run like normal.

Unlike the muffs, which use pressure to force water through the engine, running in the barrel requires the water pump to draw water up through the motor. If the pump is not running properly, it will be obvious due to an insufficient stream flowing from the tell-tale. On some engines, there’s a flushing port actually mounted on the motor. Like the muffs, this has the connection for a hose pipe, but the engine does not need to be run; water pressure and gravity do the job. The added advantage of the built-in system is that flushing easily can be done even with the boat in the water at the dock; however, should you want to run the engine with the boat parked on the hard, you’ll have to use the muffs or barrel method.

Flushing your engine regularly with a set of muffs or by using a large barrel could save you big in the long term.

Aids to flushing You can add some proprietary flushing agents to the water while flushing your outboard that are supposed to further clean the engine’s internal waterways more thoroughly than just water alone. I’ve seen a few product demonstrations, most of which have some sort of foaming action, but I’ve no direct experience using these additives myself. In all instances, follow the engine manufacturers’ flushing recommendations. The owner’s manual will have instructions and guidance on the best way(s) to flush the engine and spell out what, if any, chemicals may be used throughout the process. ★

ASK THE EXPERT by Elizabeth Altick

Totally Floored Infinity Luxury Woven Vinyl president Steve Couch espouses the virtues of vinyl floor coverings.

CONTACT Infinity Luxury Woven Vinyl 5211 Mitchell Bridge Rd. Dalton, GA 30721 706-529-2241 INFINITYLWV.COM

LB: While owners want their boats to look great all the time, floor coverings often are the last thing on their minds. Is there a material that keeps its good looks over time and stands up well to a harsh marine environment?

LB: Is it easy to match a boat’s décor?

Couch: Absolutely. The newest and most advanced floor covering available today is Luxury Woven Vinyl (LWV). It offers easy maintenance and long-lasting eye appeal. It’s UV stable and 100-percent recyclable.

LB: Is installing the floor covering a DIY project?

LB: Floor coverings on boats can take a beating, especially in high-trafficked deck and cockpit areas. How does a vinyl covering withstand heavy use?

LB: Most boats have several wide-open spaces. How does one achieve a seamless look?

Couch: It virtually remains like new. These new LWV floor coverings surpass all previous floor materials and look fantastic for years.

Couch: Yes. We currently offer more than 160 colors in 17 collections, all designed to coordinate with today’s boating color schemes. Couch: It can be. LWV floor coverings are easy to cut and do not require any special equipment. Also, most adhesives work with vinyl products.

Couch: It’s called “double row cutting.” Always overlay the two edges and make one cut. The seams meet almost perfectly. Afterwards, use seam sealer to protect your good work.

LB: Don’t floor coverings fade over time?

Couch: Some do, but LWV products will stay colorfast for years. They actually have a 10-year fade warranty, far superior to other flooring products on the market. LB: What prevents a floor covering from becoming moldy?

Couch: We add an antimicrobial agent to our LWV during production. It’s totally safe and non-toxic. The treatment prevents bacteria, eliminating any health concerns as well as mold and odor issues.

Couch: The easiest way is to simply wipe down with a damp cloth or just rinse with plain water. Elizabeth Altick

LB: Generally speaking, boaters try to be environmentally responsible. How does vinyl help further that goal?

Couch: As I mentioned, our products are 100-percent recyclable. Our vinyl is phthalate-free, lead-free, R.E.A.C.H.-certified and meets strict California Prop 65 standards. We always try to be environmentally responsible. We truly believe in it.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

LB: What is the approximate price of vinyl covering and how does it compare to other materials?

Couch: LWV performs better and is much more desirable. The cushion underfoot feels great and is superior to other floor coverings. LWV is less expensive over time than most other floor coverings, but the initial cost is somewhat higher. ★

e all know that Great Lakes weather can change in an instant, which can make it challenging for owners of smaller boats that are generally trailered to and from the dock. Enter Carolina Cat’s new 23SD — a versatile 23-footer that’s easy to tow, but made for big water. The new 23SD is Carolina Cat’s first model in the ski and deck boat market. “The Carolina Cat 23SD combines the best features of powered catamarans in a boat that’s equipped for all the different ways the Great Lakes can be enjoyed,” says Dave Tuchler, vice president of marketing for PowerCat Group. “From fishing to cruising to wakeboarding, the Carolina Cat’s big water composure, deck space and shallow draft give you the versatility to do it all.” Based on the same catamaran hull design that saltwater anglers in the Southeast use to fish up to 50 miles offshore (Carolina Cat is a sister brand to World Cat, Glacier Bay and Livingston, which collectively sell 17 different catamaran models from 9 to 32 feet), the 23SD has the family pedigree

to handle big, open waters. But the cat hull design brings numerous other benefits as well. The massive, wide bow easily seats four adults (or a whole lot of kids) and accommodates a filler cushion to turn this area into one enormous sun pad. The bow deck conceals a retractable boarding ladder, a great feature when you beach the boat for a picnic. And the boat draws just 11 inches of water, allowing it to travel, dock or launch just about anywhere. Since cat hulls are deepest at the gunwale, storage beneath the twin consoles is substantial enough to easily house a walk-in head with standard, electric-flush toilet. Wrap-around lounge seats make a great spot to soak up the sun, or pop in the removable, pedestal-mount fiberglass table to convert this space into a comfortable dining area. A self-draining anchor locker up front is a nice touch. “The massive in-floor storage locker located between the helm and passenger console speaks to this boat’s family-friendly versatility,” says Craig Duchow of CenterPointe Yacht Services, headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. “It’s the ideal spot to store bulky items like skis, and its wide lid is supported by a gas ram, leaving both hands free for stowing or retrieving gear.” The helm is clean and clear, with plenty of room to mount large, multi-function displays. Left of the 15-inch, polished

stainless steel steering wheel (with tilt and hydraulic steering) is the control head for the standard Jenson AM/FM four-speaker stereo. A Ritchie Explorer compass sits atop the console. The flowing, wrap-around, anodized aluminum walk-through windshield gives the DC 235 a clean and fresh profile. Driver and companion ride on plush, upholstered bucket seats with flip-up bolsters. The aft portion of the helm seat base contains a 15-gallon insulated fiberglass bait well, while the port seat features a handy cooler. The large passenger console conceals a spacious head compartment with a 12-volt light. Heading aft, the rear bench seat features a fold-down seat bottom, allowing you to easily stow it for more cockpit space when fishing. The cockpit floor is fiberglass non-skid, which, along with the DC 235’s standard raw water washdown and self-draining cockpit, makes end-of-day cleanups a snap. With a single 250-horsepower outboard, Pursuit’s DC 235 will do 45 mph at WOT (or crusie comfortably all day at 30 mph) and comes in a variety of hull colors. ★

et boats have grown increasingly popular in recent years, especially among younger families who appreciate their lack of an exposed propeller. With all the engine’s mechanicals contained within the boat, there’s no fear of the kid slipping on the swim platform and skinning a shin on the prop. Young families are exactly who Scarab appeals to with its innovative 215. With seating for 10 and a host of standard features, this is a fun and affordable jet boat that’s built for enjoyment. While it follows a familiar bowrider floor plan, with plush, wrap-around bow seating and comfy captain’s chairs for the driver and navigator, the 215’s Versa Lounge stern seating is what really sets it apart. A wide and comfortable U-shaped lounge rings the rear cockpit, but look close and you’ll see that the seat back can be set in three different positions: Forward-facing for a great view while underway; rear-facing for enjoying the boat’s oversized rear swim platform; or fully reclined, making the 215 the only jet boat in its class with a full sun pad.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Further, the oversized rear swim platform is truly spacious for a 21-foot boat and speaks to the 215 being designed for family fun. An available soft step swim platform mat is a popular option among buyers who enjoy watersports. The 215 comes with both a ski tow ring and massive in-floor ski locker as standard equipment. The boat exacts its get-up-and-go from twin BRP Rotax 4-TEC 1503 direct-drive jets, each generating 150 horsepower. Watersports enthusiasts will appreciate the Rotax’s cutting-edge shaft guard, which does a remarkable job of preventing weeds or hanging tow ropes from wrapping around the drive shaft. With the Scarab 215, there’s no need to clean out the ports that you find on other boats. And an available wakeboard tower helps make the most of the 215’s thrill-ride capabilities. Drivers can select from three different operating modes (options on this boat) to suit their needs: Eco mode for the best planing performance; Ski mode for watersports; and Docking mode for optimal handling at idle speeds. ★

uilding on the success of its popular 200CC model, the all-new Striper 200WA is a capable offshore fishing boat that’s easily trailerable, making it a perfect choice for Great Lakes anglers who might want to fish for salmon one day and walleye the next. “With its secure, dry storage and full protection from the elements, Striper’s 200WA is a true three-season boat for Great Lakes anglers,” says Matthew Vetzner, director of marketing for Marquis – Larson Group. “From trolling for ice-out lake trout to late-autumn steelhead, it has all the amenities needed to fish in comfort as long as you have open water.” Built on Striper’s V-Trac hull design, the 200WA is designed for bigger water than its 20-foot length might suggest. Its aggressive sheer line gives the boat plenty of freeboard for offshore security and an exceptionally dry ride. With its standard 91-gallon fuel tank and ability to handle outboards up to 200 horsepower, the 200WA has both the speed and range to reach out in search of big fish. The main cockpit contains other surprises, such as a pair of

12-gallon macerator fish boxes found to port and starboard in the cockpit floor — a rare feature in a 20-foot boat. On the port side, you’ll spy a standard 16-gallon bait well station with cutting-board lid. Below the gunnels you’ll find integrated toe keepers and padded side rails throughout the main cockpit, while built-in port and starboard rod storage keeps your equipment out of the way while running from spot to spot. Three-drawer tackle boxes keep lures securely stowed. The spacious helm accommodates a pair of 10-inch displays and includes a standard, stainless steel steering wheel with turning knob. Add the optional hardtop or Alaskan package for added security and protection from the elements. Bow access is easy thanks to wide, 8-inch walkways on either side of the cabin. Step below through the locking bi-fold cockpit door, and a large v-berth with table awaits. Add the optional galley for even greater convenience on the water. With its standard Shoreland’r galvanized trailer, big-water hull, generous fuel capacity, and economical outboard power, Striper’s 200WA is definitely made to go places. ★

C43 Coupe

I

’ll let you in on a little secret: I like hulls. Yes, I know they are a key part of a boat and should not leak, and you want to keep

that end of your boat pointed down. What I like is to look at them, see the contour, measure the deadrise, count the lifting strakes, and check the hard/soft chines or spray rails. Hulls are the unsung heroes of boats, but one of the most critical components when considering comfort, handling, speed and efficiency.

I was fortunate to see the hull of the new Carver Yachts C43 Coupe as she was being gingerly lifted from her resting place on terra firma and rolled to the haul-out bay for the sea trial, courtesy of the team at Sovereign Marine Group in Stuart, Florida. From here, I could “read” the hull and get an idea of how the C43 would run. She has a modified V-hull, which starts with a sharp entry in the bow and is great for slicing waves and head seas. Next is a lifting strake that runs from the point of the bow well aft that actually helps lift the boat as it increases speed. Then there’s the hard chine (one of its jobs is to control rocking) and a knockdown rail that helps keep the sea from running up the side of the boat. At the transom, the hull deadrise is 14 degrees, creating a flatter surface for speed and lift. My first impression of the hull was that the C43 would be fast, controlling and dry. And I wasn’t far off the mark, as I found out during the sea trial.

Feature-packed interior

Interesting also is that the hull really doesn’t taper in as it goes towards the waterline. The C43 has a high freeboard and beamy, 13-foot, 10-inch hull that Carver carries as far forward as possible while remaining esthetically pleasing. The exterior styling is indicative of the volume of interior space that makes the C43 feel like a larger yacht, inside and out. Once the boat was in the water, I climbed aboard wanting to see more. With a new line of yachts from 34 to 43 feet, Carver has retooled its molds — as well as its thinking — in order to deliver a high-value, affordable yacht. From the style side, Carver uses a glass aft bulkhead between the salon and aft deck, which consists of three panels. The left panel is a wide, swing-out door for easy access. For added openness, unlock the middle and right panels, which fold accordion-style to the right side, blending the two areas into one. The aft deck will be a favorite place to gather. A plush, L- shaped settee with backrests flanks a wood table. Enjoy an

al fresco dining experience while taking in the surroundings. Extending the recessed power sun shade allows for coverage on sunny days. Another settee to starboard will keep the crowd localized. Located mid-ship is the galley to port, and it’s a convenient spot for serving guests, inside or out. It has a streamlined style that offers counter space and appliances, but doesn’t “get in the way.” My test ride included an undercounter, side-by-side Nova Kool fridge, twin basin stainless sink with Delta faucet, two-burner Whale flat cooktop with vent, and an under-counter Cuisinart microwave. Flooring consisted of vinyl planking for ease of maintenance and a uniform look. To starboard is the U-shaped upholstered lounge with hi-lo wood table (filler cushions convert this to a berth). It’s generously sized for a large party, or to just stretch out and catch a game on the 32-inch LED TV over the galley. Lighting management is essential, and Carver seems to have nailed this on the C43. Flooding the interior with light is not only achieved via the large glass aft doors, but also through the low-profile galley that doesn’t obstruct the view from stem to stern. Above, you’ll spy the retractable electric sun roof with sun shade for lounging under the stars. The forward twin pane windshields offer superior visibility, and the side helm windows have sliders for fresh air or to take a peek when docking. Another well thought out feature is the “basement.” Through a large hatch in the galley floor, drop down two steps into a cavernous dry storage area. With racks to hold four, 14-gallon tubs plus a few along the side, extra lines, fenders or gear, Carver once again displays its practical use of space. It makes for an excellent storage compartment to house provisions for an extended cruise.

Impressive performance

My mission for this run was to let Capt. Steve Campbell take the C43 out of the slip to open water and turn her over to me. I wanted to feel the steering, throttles, joystick and handling right from the driver’s seat. And she didn’t disappoint.

Capt. Tom Serio at the helm.

Riding on Hull No. 1, the C43 sported twin Cummins 480-hp diesel engines with v-drives, which really responded when put to the test. At WOT, we were cruising at 33 knots, then pulled back to 26 knots at 2600 rpm, then to 19 knots at 2200 rpm. At 2200 rpm, the burn rate is about 21 gallons per hour, and that’s for both engines. Better economy is found at 9.7 knots (1600 rpm), with a rate of 10.8 gallons per hour. Financially speaking, the C43 can be an economical boat to run. Power when you need it, savings when you want it. Impressive when pushing more than 29,000 pounds of heavy yacht. Hard-over wheeling had the C43 leaning well into the turns, but nothing scary. Joystick operation was easy and responsive, thanks to the Cummins Inboard Joystick system that’s coupled with the bow thruster. Not only was I able to safely maneuver around larger yachts with ease, but the directional approach of the joystick eliminates the need to think about which gear goes forward and which goes in reverse when spinning or crawling sideways. Capt. Steve allowed me to dock the C43, trusting me not to hit the boat in front while preventing any scratches on this new ride. Two big pluses here helped me get her in flawlessly. For one, there was instant response on the stick in any direction. Secondly, the joystick is mounted to the left of the starboard helm, which allowed me to stand mid-ship, face aft and comfortably see everywhere while bumping the joystick. A nice setup! At the helm, the Teleflex hydraulic tilt wheel with rubber

grip is mounted on the left side of the dash, more towards center and not up against the side window, resulting in a center line of sight fore and aft. Breakers and switches are mounted in the dash, along with the Bennett Trim Tab controls and electronic throttle controls. A raised console houses the electronics, such as a multi-function display, SmartCraft Vessel View monitor, VHF radio, and depth and temp gauges. All of the important gear is located near the helm, including the AC and DC breaker panels, housed in separate cabinets below the helm seats.

Sleeping beauty

I’ve stayed overnight on several Carver models, and by the looks of the accommodations of the C43, this should, indeed, be a “home away from home” experience. Forward is the master with queen island berth, end tables and cabinets. Natural light pours in from rectangle side windows and an overhead hatch that doubles as an egress. An ensuite head includes a Raritan electric toilet, vessel sink, fiberglass shower stall and hull-side window with port. A guest stateroom is located to starboard and nestled under the helm, with twin berths that have a filler cushion to convert them to a full-size bed. A hull-side window has an opening port with screen. Guests use a day head with handheld shower, Raritan toilet and side window. Mini skylights in each head stream light in and are mounted inside, just below the windshields. Access around the deck is easy. Molded-in steps, grab rails and the high railing add to the boat’s comfort and safety. The large forward deck is ideal for laying out or propping up a few chairs to catch a sunset at anchor. Below, the engine room is easily workable, with access to systems that need checking or changing, like filters, sea strainers, batteries, the 11kW Kohler generator, etc. Along with style, space, seaworthiness and comfort, the C43 Coupe also is an exceptionally quiet boat. Carver has yet another winner here. And trust me on that hull thing. ★

GLASTRON GT 200 A real water roadster. BY ALAN WENDT

J

ust the initials “GT” sounded fun. Old enough to remember the Beach Boys and still dreaming of owning the GTO Pontiac Muscle car popular with every adolescent jock of that era, I was geared up for a test ride on the Glastron GT 200. Finding one proved to be a challenge. Even though this is the third production year, dealers can’t keep them in stock, and we finally tracked one down, five hours from my home port. “It’s like a Corvette on the water,” Top Notch Marine’s Steve Moores says, gesturing to the retro-looking, deep-set gauges and pull switches comprising the helm. The theme is reminiscent of a 1960s roadster, right down to the four analog instrument bezels, with white faces and black numerals. A custom shaped vinyl sunshade protrudes over the top of the instrument panel and is color coordinated with each helm and hull. LAKELANDBOATING.COM

I was fortunate to have along for the ride one of the dealer’s best mechanics. These are the trained individuals who work on many models, different engines and get to peer behind “the curtain,” so to speak. Excellent sources of information, they recognize a well-built boat — one that’s easy to maintain — and Glastron’s GT 200 fits the bill. Now mind you, I just got out of a five-hour car ride, so my sea legs and joints were stiff. Some boat cockpits are so crammed with features and esthetic design hyperbole that even a water ballerina would find navigation from the swim platform to the bow exercise. Glastron made seating uncomplicated with generous passageways on purpose. The captain and observer both get individual swivel bucket seats. Backs are plenty high for support, and those with long legs will certainly appreciate the extra inches of space between the seat and the forward bow division. Adjacent to both chairs and mounted into the side walls are expandable pocket storage areas for things like paper charts, suntan lotion and, who knows, maybe even a paperback novel. I’d recommend keeping your smartphone in the lockable stereo box on the passenger’s dash. That Sony stereo can rock a boat this size without the need for expensive amplifiers and overhead speaker arrays so common on wakeboard boats. This model is rated for 2200 pounds, or 9 passengers. Two obviously can ride in the forward bow. My observation is that adults may find a long ride in the bow somewhat cozy, but for kids and teens, it’s just right. The fight will probably be over the portside lounger. The aft bench seat pulls out to form a relaxing chaise lounge. Every one of the seats, forward and aft, lifts up to reveal a variety of storage, and a center deck ski locker holds the bigger toys. One thing Glastron has nicely designed on this boat is the pocket swim platform that hugs the outboard. Instead of a narrow sliver of reboarding real estate, the twin platforms are wide (3 feet, 3 inches by 2 feet), include a fold down swim ladder, and ample room for posteriors of all sizes to gracefully

slide in and out of the lake. Glastron offers three GTS 20-foot models, including a sterndrive version and a jet-powered model. While our test boat was powered with the fuel-sipping 150 E-TEC, I’d splurge for the 200-hp upgrade, especially if you expect to tow a bunch of people at once. Glastron’s single, four-alarm gauge monitoring critical functions is probably one of those overlooked, unheralded features. For the inexperienced new boater, I can’t think of a better option. We all work hard to afford some fun and relaxation on the water. No one needs the day to end in disappointment or repair ticket shock. Throughout the boat you’ll find the usual collection of conveniently placed cup holders adjacent to seats and slender hand holds scattered about the deck and near the swim platform. Popup cleats, solid stainless hinges and hardware show the thought behind mission critical features. Glastron is a price-conscious builder but performance is not an area for compromise. This boat has a higher than normal freeboard forward and an average cockpit depth in excess of 30 inches for a feeling of passenger safety and maintaining a drier ride. Great for lakes, yet on calmer days, fine in big bodies of water. Like a roadster, you’ll get ample adrenaline rushes of

Alan Wendt at the helm.

speed with this model. A 200-hp engine and modestly loaded boat can hit between 48 and 51 mph. Evinrude, Mercury and Yamaha outboard power in a variety of horsepower ranges are available. Most buyers are unlikely to spend much time studying the hull; however, Glastron incorporates a 7-inch reverse chine that is carried significantly forward, which adds stability at rest and knocks down spray. Tracking in turns is solid and steering felt responsive. Attention getting exterior color hulls, modern graphics and corresponding interior colors combine to make this boat an attractive consideration. H

a Heritage

O

ne of the most endearing things about boating is how it brings generations together. Nowhere is that more evident than in Hessel, Michigan, where E. J. Mertaugh Boat Works has kept families on the water for more than 90 years. Bridging the past with the present is everyday business at E. J. Mertaugh, where owners Brad and Shelley Koster lead a uniquely skilled and dedicated group of employees devoted to preserving the Great Lakes’ boating heritage. While the company sells both new and used boats, along with Evinrude and Yamaha outboards, it’s best known for its spectacular restoration work on classic runabouts, cruisers and launches. With an unmatched attention to detail, E. J. Mertaugh has built a stellar reputation for its showroom restorations of classic Chris-Craft, Gar Wood, Hacker, Century, Lyman, Thompson and similar vintage watercraft, bringing tired boats back to factory-fresh condition.

The birth of a boatyard

E. J. Mertaugh Boat Works first opened in 1925, when its namesake owner built a boathouse out of scrap lumber and signed on to become the world’s first Chris-Craft dealer. With 1920s roads being what they were, many of those original boats were Clockwise from top left: E. J. Mertaugh Boat Works became Chris-Craft’s first dealer shortly after the doors opened in 1925. Although the building’s façade has changed, many of the boats exiting its restoration shop and tied to its docks remain in 1920s showroom condition.

delivered to the boatyard via Lake Huron, from the company’s Algonac, Michigan factory, using only a compass for navigation. Business proved brisk, and a handful of those old mahogany Chris-Crafts can still be seen plying the straits today, in many cases owned and enjoyed by the original families. The Kosters fell in love with northern Michigan many years ago; they started to visit after Shelley’s parents, Bruce and Nancy Glupker, acquired E. J. Mertaugh Boat Works in the late 1980s. After operating the boatyard for a dozen years, they passed the torch to Shelley and Brad in 2000. “We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to buy the business from my father,” says Shelley. “We’re boaters ourselves, and we just love the area. It’s quiet and peaceful, and really just the perfect place to raise our kids and give them a unique quality of life. It was a big decision, obviously, but we had spent so much time up here already that we knew a lot of the people and it felt like the right thing to do.”

Stewards of the brand

Making the move from Grand Rapids to Hessel was one thing; transitioning from careers in retail and real estate development to operating a boat yard proved quite another for the young family. “Operating a heritage business like E. J. Mertaugh Boat Works is more than just a job,” Brad says. “We feel that our role is that of stewards, who have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to care for this enterprise for a period of time. There are families that have come here, literally, for generations. They bring their kids and their grandkids, and they share their own memories of summers here in the Les Cheneaux Islands. They come into our showroom and enjoy how so much of it has remained unchanged over the years. So we feel a strong sense of responsibility to respect those traditions and contribute to the boatyard’s place in our time.” Respecting that legacy while keeping the business firmly in 2015 requires a careful sense of balance. Modern equipment, including a 60-ton Travelift and a 60-ton hydraulic trailer, shares the yard with skilled artisans who work largely by hand, experts in old-world varnishing techniques, wood and fiberglass construction, and the finicky quirks of classic engines from another era.

Keeping history afloat

The unique expertise of E. J. Mertaugh’s accomplished craftsmen has led to the yard developing a growing reputation for performing major renovations to unique or historically significant vessels. One recent project was a substantial rebuild of the 1970-built, 60-foot cruiser Artania II, the last wooden vessel built by the Matthews Boat Company. Mertaugh technicians replaced the vast majority of the vessel’s hull with new planking, replaced the entire wooden deck and completely refinished the superstructure. The scope of the project extended beyond returning Artania II to showroom condition, however; it also included a significant modernization, as evidenced by the installation of a custom wooden dash to accommodate a new, state-of-the-art navigation system centered around two large, multi-function LED displays. E. J. Mertaugh’s legendary restoration work is seen in the beautifully restored Artania II, the last wooden vessel built by the Matthews Boat Company. Most of its planking was replaced and the helm rebuilt to incorporate the latest in digital navigation aids.

It ’s Showtime!

Love classic boats? Then plan to be in Hessel, Michigan on the second Saturday in August for the Les Cheneaux Antique Wooden Boat Show, hosted at E. J. Mertaugh Boat Works on the Hessel waterfront. For 38 years, the popular event has attracted wooden boat owners and enthusiasts from all over and serves as a perfect excuse to visit one of the most unique marine operations on the Great Lakes. — C.R.

Another recent project involved a complete rebuild of the late 1950s Sparkman & Stephens-designed sailboat Annelise. That work included an entirely new bottom (removing, fabricating and installing a new keel) as well as new decks, a new cockpit, new galley, new Vacuflush system, complete rewiring, new sails, and new hardware. Now operating as a popular charter vessel from the nearby community of Cedarville, Annelise frequently is spotted cruising the local waters every summer. “We do a lot of restoration work on classic wooden launches, which have always been extremely popular in this area,” Brad explains. “And we do a lot of work on classic fiberglass, which is a bit more unusual. We have onsite fiberglass techs who do everything from touching up scratches to complete rebuilds of classic fiberglass cruisers and runabouts.” “In a way we serve two different customer groups,” observes Shelley. “We work very hard to maintain our strong relationship with customers in the local area. But because our staff has such tremendous knowledge, we’ve come to serve owners of classic boats from across the Great Lakes. We have unique capabilities and expertise that allows us to custom-fabricate components and perform restoration work on a level that just doesn’t exist anywhere else.”

Full speed ahead

As a full-service, on-water marine business, E. J. Mertaugh Boat Works offers dockage, operates a chandlery and provides a full range of marine services. Always evolving, the company even has launched a new snack and confectionary business inside the showroom called North Coast Company, which celebrates the boating season with the area’s best ice cream, fudge, coffee and soda. They also sell new Stanley aluminum boats and PowerCat fiberglass catamarans, as well as both fully restored classic vessels and interesting restoration candidates. A walk along the docks always is an enlightening experience, since you can browse brand-new boats and classics older than you are, side-by-side. Do so with a youngster — ice cream in hand — and you’ll fully appreciate that magical sense of stewardship expressed by Shelley and Brad Koster. E. J. Mertaugh Boat Works celebrates its 90-year heritage by focusing on where it’s going rather than reflecting on where it’s been. H The 1950s-built sailboat Annelise received a complete rebuild at E. J. Mertaugh, including a new bottom, keel, decks, cockpit, galley, sails and hardware — plus a healthy dose of modern upgrades. The handsome vessel now serves as a popular charter boat.

Remember the 844

This July, Chicago, Illinois and Michigan City, Indiana will commemorate the 100th anniversary of an unimaginable tragedy — the capsizing of the SS Eastland.

entle hands remove the rope from her small body. Her fair hair cascades forward, dripping, revealing a pale, fragile neck. Her fine dress is ruined, and her little stockinged legs are crumpled beneath her. This could be anyone’s daughter, dressed in her best for an eagerly anticipated day of picnicking with her working-class family. Instead, her hopes, dreams and very life vanished in the murky, cold Chicago River on one anguished summer morning. She died on the SS Eastland, along with 843 others,

when the steamer suddenly rolled over on July 24, 1915. It was the worst maritime disaster in Great Lakes history. Yet many people haven’t heard of the Eastland. Perhaps it’s because the sinking of the RMS Lusitania had captured the nation’s attention that spring, or perhaps the dawn of World War I doomed the accident to obscurity. “I had lived in Chicago for years,” says author Michael McCarthy, whose acclaimed book, “Ashes Under Water,” tells the story of the Eastland, and of the legal drama that

shook the Midwest after she capsized. “One day I was having lunch on the river, and a friend mentioned that a ship had sunk there. So many people died, and I wondered, how could I never have heard of this?” Ted Wachholz, executive director of the not-for-profit Eastland Disaster Historical Society, grew up in the Chicago suburb of Elgin and also was not familiar with what happened on that drizzly July morning in the heart of the city. “I married into it, because my wife’s grandmother was an Eastland survivor,” Wachholz says. “In 25 years, I’d never heard of the Eastland. I wasn’t alone. I found it bizarre that people didn’t even recognize the ship’s name — not even lifelong Chicago residents.”

A cranky ship turns deadly

Built in 1903, the 265-foot Eastland was the first and only passenger ship built by the Port Huron, Michigan-based Jenks Shipbuilding Company, which specialized in bulk freighters. With a 38-foot beam, four Scotch boilers and two triple-expansion steam engines, she was built for speed.

Unfortunately, this slender steel steamer also had a high superstructure, and with a capacity of more than 2,700 passengers, she was prone to listing. “The Eastland went through several owners over a 12-year timeline, and you start to see a pattern,” says Jim Retseck, co-president of the Michigan City Historical Society in Indiana. “She quickly got a reputation for being a tender ship, a little squirrelly. There were problems from the beginning.” In July 1904, the Eastland nearly capsized off South Haven, Michigan, badly frightening passengers. In the years to follow, she would have so many near misses that her reputation suffered. Her owners took out a newspaper advertisement, offering $5,000 to anyone who could prove she was unsafe. No one did. “She left Lake Erie and came back to Lake Michigan, and then there were problems here, out of St. Joe,” Retseck says. “She had all kinds of run-ins with docks, props and sandbars. Other boats did, too, but with her listing problems, it became scary.” New problems piled atop existing problems. After the Titanic sank in April 1912, maritime law required that

An Unprecedented Discovery For the better part of two decades, the Eastland Disaster Historical Society pursued myriad reports of possible 1915 film footage of the SS Eastland tragedy. All leads proved to be dead ends — until a February post from EDHS Facebook follower Jeff Nichols, a doctoral student at the University of Illinois at Chicago. While researching World War I via europeana1914-1918.eu, a website that collects personal memorabilia, Nichols came across two significant film clips from EYE Film Instituut Nederland. There, buried in the grainy, century-old footage of soldiers and civilians in Europe, was the Eastland. These two short video clips comprise the first

lost their lives in the Great Lakes’ deadliest maritime disaster, the capsized Eastland comes to life, along with those who were affected by her — survivors, victims, first responders, rescuers and salvagers. The first clip (55 seconds) shows first responders and rescuers pulling survivors and victims through a gangway; it begins at the 1:10 mark. The second shows the efforts to right the Eastland weeks later. This footage begins at the 9:10 mark. Interested viewers can access both clips at known archived film footage of the disaster. It’s an unprecedented discovery, all the more eerie for its timing. Now, 100 years after 844 people

ships carry additional lifeboats and life rafts. This made the Eastland even more top-heavy, and then the owners added 2 inches of concrete to replace aging wooden decks. “The ship went from tender to cranky to deadly,” Retseck says.

Commemorate the 100th Anniversary This summer, Great Lakes residents and visitors will have the opportunity to join descendants of those affected by the Eastland disaster as they commemorate the 100th anniversary of the tragedy. The Arlington Heights, Illinois-based Eastland Disaster Historical Society has arranged a full roster of special events in Chicago, while the Michigan City Historical Society is hosting a memorial event in the Indiana city where 2,501 happy picnickers should have disembarked for a day of fun, laughter and revelry 100 years ago.

“They never could control the ship,” McCarthy adds. “They couldn’t for 11 years, but they were lucky. Until their luck ran out.” On July 24, 1915, five excursion steamers were poised to carry thousands of Western Electric Company workers from Chicago to Michigan City for their annual company picnic. At 7:28 a.m., with 2,501 people aboard, the Eastland rolled onto her port side and came to rest on the river bottom. Hundreds were trapped belowdecks. Others were crushed by falling debris, or drowned in their waterlogged picnic clothes.

The Eastland legacy

Together with his wife and his sister-in-law, Wachholz formed the Eastland Disaster Historical Society in 1998 to gather and preserve Eastland testimonies — about the 844 who were lost, the 1,657 who survived, and the tens of thousands who had some peripheral involvement. “There were rescue workers, bystanders, store owners, surviving family and friends,” he explains. “These people were all directly affected by this disaster, and four generations later, there are countless people alive today with some connection to the tragedy. We exist to capture personal family information, and to connect people with each other.” Those stories bring the disaster to life. One family from Peoria, Illinois, shared a personal testimony that describes the horror of trying to find loved ones in a makeshift morgue at the Second Regiment Armory (today’s Harpo Studios in Chicago). The armory was overflowing with more than 800 victims, with 85 bodies per line. The descendants of survivor J.V. Brown provided a nightmarish description of being on a lower deck on the Eastland’s river side when the ship capsized. He fought his way under water, searching for an air pocket as frantic people grabbed his arms and legs. “He said, ‘No man is a hero under water,’” Wachholz relates. “That really says it all.” In his testimony, survivor Charles Kelly attempted to describe the indescribable: “You might close your eyes and try to imagine the scene, but you could not stretch your imagination far enough to cover it as it really was; to be in it is the only way one can realize the enormity of it.” Kelly’s wife, son and daughter survived. His daughter had been sitting on a bench, holding hands with another little girl. Her friend did not survive. The testimonies of these families, Wachholz says, must be preserved. They are the Eastland’s legacy. “These people weren’t rich and famous, like those on the Titanic,” he observes. “They were 100-percent working-class people, looking forward to their day off. They were immigrants. They’re Chicago, then and now. “In the end, remembering the Eastland isn’t about the ship,” he continues. “It’s about the people. It’s about remembering the 844. You don’t have to be rich or famous to be remembered.”

Bearing witness

For McCarthy, bearing witness is critical for another reason. Although he was initially exonerated along with the ship’s owners, chief engineer Joseph M. Erickson took all the blame for the accident when the case was reopened in the early 1930s. Yet, McCarthy discovered the Norwegian immigrant likely was one of the Eastland’s true heroes, taking steps to prevent a boiler explosion, staying at his post until he nearly drowned, and saving several lives. He took the fall, posthumously, despite powerful evidence of guilt among the owners — as attorney Clarence Darrow marked in his notes during the 1915 trial, they had known about the Eastland’s serious problems. The ship didn’t capsize because Erickson filled the ballast tanks incorrectly. She capsized because she was a fundamentally unstable ship, and they knew it. “It’s important to expose how calamities can result when corporations put profit before safety,” McCarthy explains. “I wanted to correct the historical record, put the evidence out there, and let readers draw their own conclusions. I also wanted to lay the myths and urban legends to rest. “Thousands of descendants deserve to know the true story of how their family members perished, and they perished horribly,” he continues. “This tragedy changed the architecture of entire family trees; it’s a large event in American history that has more or less disappeared. It’s worth it to come back and bear witness through documentary evidence.” It took 12 years to research and write “Ashes Under Water.” McCarthy says those lost on the Eastland helped him stay on course… one child, in particular. “That little girl in the photo,” he says softly. “Based on what I know now, she didn’t have to die. This didn’t have to happen. That prompted me many times. I was doing it for her.” ★

Learn More about the Eastland Disaster Unless you’re a boatnerd, or a Chicagoan with family ties to the disaster, you may not have heard of the SS Eastland. Or, your knowledge might be limited to the odd chapter in Great Lakes shipwreck tomes. Many excellent resources shine a light on the Eastland’s story and share the many personal testimonies that might otherwise have been lost, if not for the dedication of those like Ted Wachholz, executive director of the not-for-profit Eastland Disaster Michael McCarthy (above) stands before Historical Society and longtime the site in modern-day journalist Michael McCarthy. Author Ted McCarthy devoted 12 years of his Wachholz (right). life to researching and writing his acclaimed book, “Ashes Under Water.” “There, near the Clark Street Bridge, within the shallows of the Chicago River, stirring perhaps even still, the last cries and breaths of multitudes churned… in one vast drowning,” McCarthy writes in his book’s introduction. “It is for these, these lost voices of the river, that we must speak.” — H.S. ’m plopped cross-legged in the center of Appleton, Wisconsin’s Houdini Plaza, thumping an inverted paint bucket with a pair of wooden drumsticks. It’s a blue sky day pretty enough to make anyone sing, or, in our case, pound out some increasingly complicated rhythms — this unlikely band of toddlers in sundresses, teens in baseball caps, business people on a lunch break, fellow boaters, and me. We’re taking a free drumming class. And it’s just one of dozens of activity options on the docket of the four-day Mile of Music Festival, where the music is original and you can’t really sit on the sidelines when surrounded by such a creative culture. In one direction, a giant Cat in the Hat sits perched atop the Trout Museum of Art, the community-created art project broadcasting a Dr. Seuss exhibit within. To another, a stained glass tower blends the work of photographers and artists over the years, and from all directions waft the sometimes-competing sounds of singer/songwriters. Some 200 bands are in town, playing 600 or so all-free concerts inside taverns, restaurants, brew pubs, chapels, pizza parlors, auditoriums and parks. Whether Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago is what inspires creative fun like this is up for debate, but it’s surely no coincidence that port towns lining the lake throw well over a

thousand festivals each year, on top of weekly outdoor concerts, markets and film fests under the stars. Nature’s art is the focus along the east side, the section most notable for rocky cliffs and striking viewscapes. And there’s a soundtrack here to suit most any trip’s desire: Original singer/songwriter tunes that form the focus of this festival, at which Norah Jones once appeared, others devoted to rock, country and contemporary Christian tunes, or perhaps just the iPod on your boat as you sail or motor across the nation’s second largest inland freshwater lake.

Weekly farmer’s markets, most featuring live music and listed as among the nation’s best, merge the region’s traditional dairy and farming pursuits with a growing arts community and influx of southeast Asian immigrants, evidenced by the popularity of the markets’ fresh egg rolls and other Asian food treats. In the surrounding countryside, a growing number of farms like Givens Farm near Appleton are offering farm-to-table cuisine at special dinners and cafés, and new microbreweries serve up creative brews with equally creative names. A favorite: Appleton’s Stone Arch Brew Pub’s Vanishing Vanilla Stout’s ode to one-time resident Harry Houdini. And part of the fun is the element of surprise that all this resides within a predominately rural area originally known best for its churches and supper clubs (see sidebar). A popular blogger had apparently not visited in a while (or ever) when he last year named pretty Neenah, perched on the northwestern shoreline, the seventh most boring city in Lake Winnebago kite wing Wisconsin, noted Chris Haese, the community development director. “If you think going 80 miles per hour on Lake Winnebago, 6 miles off the ice on a windboat is boring, fine, or if boring is struggling with a 120-pound sturgeon. I don’t think so.” The lake itself, at 28 miles long and 10 miles wide, is the area’s activity centerpiece. It’s large enough that it is occasionally mistaken for one of the Great Lakes, particularly when even a light fog obscures the view to the other side. And the geology that led to the towering rock cliffs on eastern shorelines make for great scenic overlooks, at High Cliff State Park in Sherwood, alongside 1,000-year-old effigy mounds in shapes like buffalos and panthers. The unusual landforms also lend themselves to world-class boating, particularly for vessels reliant upon the wind, says Craig Molitor, president of the Fond du Lac Convention and Visitors Bureau. RETURN OF THE CLUB There’s a renaissance underway at Wisconsin clubs, and it’s fair to say that Calumet County, which wraps along the north and east sides of Lake Winnebago, is at its steak-and-cocktail center. They wouldn’t think of replacing the quintessential décor, that dark wood and trademark fish tank behind the bar. Service still starts with nibbles from the relish tray or classic shrimp cocktail and usually a Brandy Old Appleton Farmers Market

Fashioned (Wisconsin’s unofficial state cocktail). Menus likely include a juicy rib eye, old-school frog legs, a German staple like jaegersnitzel, and lingering over multiple courses remains part of the experience. But clubs are being newly cool, says Mary Bergin, author of a soon-to-be-released cookbook “Wisconsin Supper Club Cookbook: Iconic Fare and Nostalgia from Landmark Eateries,” thanks both to influences like the hit AMC series Mad Men and to a new appreciation for their value to the state’s history and culture. The historicallyfocused documentary, “Old Fashioned: The Story of the Wisconsin Club” is on the film fest circuit, and Calumet County has gone so far as to get a patent on the moniker “Club Capital of the Midwest” as a way to capitalize on the tourism draw.

FARMER’S MARKET PHOTO COURTESY OF FOX CITIES CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU; ICE FISHING PHOTO BY BOB RASHID

In the course of her research, Bergin says she learned that club tours are increasingly popular with young people who’ll dress up in 1940s-era clothing and make a progressive dinner or weekend out of club stops. Even new restaurants are opening with a club theme and updated takes on food and cocktail classics. “It’s piqued the interest of younger generations, the retro dining, the thick steaks, Ice fishing huts

strong drinks, that whole era during which things moved at a slower pace,” Bergin says. In the middle of the last century, clubs were the working class and farm family’s

Escarpment — stretching from Niagara Falls to the rocky ledges of Lake Winnebago — making for consistently great ice boating come winter, and kitesurfing and sailing the rest of the year. (The WindPower Windsurfing and Kiting Center offers lessons and rentals).

The dish on fish

Another activity hallmark comes from what lies within: The fish. Walleye star in the largest lower lake festival of the year, June’s walleye festival, which includes what its Kiwanis Club organizers claim is the world’s largest fish fry. Oshkosh is home to some of the country’s largest bass and ice fishing festivals. But it’s the massive and prehistoriclooking lake sturgeon that have really put the lake on the map, as innovative conservation efforts helped build a population decimated by the caviar market and poaching to become the largest, self-sustaining sturgeon population in the world. The sturgeon themselves, reaching more than 200 pounds, are the stuff of ancient — and not-so ancient — legends. One historian writes of 18th century sightings of a

answer to the country club; a place you could go for an evening out, never a quick meal. Some historians say the club evolved from taverns as a way to make women feel as comfortable as men, adding over-the-top décor, romantic booths, and specialty ice cream drinks like the Brandy Alexander. An area on Lake Winnebago’s east side known as the “holy land” for its many Catholic churches is one club hotbed. Many churches have closed, but the clubs have remained. There are so many that Calumet County now publishes a club map listing 32 — some, like Jim and Linda’s, offering boat docking, while others, like 15-slip Stockbridge Harbor County Park, offer a shuttle to Gobblers Knob Club — and encouraging stops at each (TRAVELCALUMET.COM). Menus, for the most part, still boast specialties like the Bavarian scotch egg you’ll find at Mark’s East Side, a hardboiled egg wrapped in German pork sausage, battered in German beer, fried and served with German mustard; or Altona Restaurant and Banquet’s famous Bloody Mary. When Bergin sought recipes for the book, she was given three for liver pate, but also ended up with treats like Hungarian mushroom soup and a schaum torte — a meringue shell filled with vanilla ice cream, topped with strawberry sauce and found on many club menus. “I felt like I was inviting everybody to potluck and didn’t know what they were going to bring — or come,” Bergin says. “But like good potluck, there were all kinds of good things, every course covered.” — K.S.

The story of the Lake Winnebago sturgeon is part environmental success story, part cultural spectacle almost too strange to be true. Picture thousands of shanties pitched on the frozen lake, fishermen inside waiting with spears to, in that most ancient of fishing means, capture ancient fish sometimes taller, older (up to 100 years) and heavier (at up to 200 pounds) than the humans catching them. Bill Casper, now 84, first went out with his uncle at age 8 and, when they caught a 104-pounder, was “hooked,” and luckily so for the sturgeon population. Over the years, the longtime farmer with property on Lake Winnebago’s east side became increasingly concerned about the declining population and frequent poaching of the ancient fish that a taste for caviar nearly rendered extinct. He learned of a Dartmouth professor who’d studied a Russian method of raising sturgeon in a hatchery and connected the professor with the state Department of Natural Resources, which put the method into practice. He also stayed involved, founding Sturgeon for Tomorrow, a group that has raised $600,000 in the last 30 years — mainly through an annual banquet so popular it has a waiting list — to help with research and management projects. And over those years, the population swelled, from 11,000 in the lake in the early 1950s, he says, to well above 45,000 today. The population, the largest in the world, now supports a 16-day spearing season in mid-February. And come along, he says to most anyone. You won’t see anything like it, anywhere. “We put a shanty on the lake, pull it out maybe 3 miles with your truck, and you lay out a hole in the ice about as big as your kitchen table,” Casper says. “We take a chainsaw now. We used to cut it by hand, and saw this hole. They have long poles called pike poles. You push the big block down and shove it under the ice, then you slide the shanty over that hole and you bank the shanty with snow to keep the wind out. Then you get your stove going and you sit. And you watch. You have your spear hanging in the shanty. You have a gaff hook. You have a radio and listen to polka music or something. We would have a radio station that broadcasts who’s getting sturgeon. They call in right away. Whoever gets the first sturgeon wins a steak dinner somewhere. We all have our radios on and can hear who caught one first, doggone it. So and so got a fish and he won whatever prize. It’s another way to pass the winter in Wisconsin.” — K.S.

creature sometimes thought to be an alligator, later assumed to be a sturgeon, inhabiting the lake’s waters. During an expedition to the lake in 1767, a British Army captain alluded to a water spirit talked about by the tribal people who then inhabited the shores; one so large it could devour a deer as it swam in the lake. “One day,” the captain wrote in his journals, “its body was found with horns protruding from its side; evidently, one meal was too great for it to engulf.” While the sturgeon story is an ancient one, the region’s relatively more modern history is told entertainingly and hands-on in spots like Appleton’s Paper Discovery Center. Here, the focus is on the way the Fox River helped usher in thriving industries like papermaking by offering an easy way to transport logs from northern woods. Or head to Appleton’s History Museum at the Castle and perform your own magic show with Houdini secrets so cool that they come with a spoiler alert. Worth planning a trip around is the exhibit of period costumes from the hit PBS series Downton Abbey, “Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times.” That premieres at the famed Biltmore Estate in North Carolina before heading this summer for a June 20-September 20 showing at Oshkosh’s Paine Art Center and Gardens. Downtown Oshkosh also is where you’ll want to be. A just-opened riverwalk, connected to the larger Wiowash Trail system, has fast become the heart of Oshkosh, a city surrounded by water, says Wendy Hielsberg, executive director of the Oshkosh Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It’s literally enticing visitors,” she says. “New restaurants have opened along it. A few blocks in, the town offers a thriving farmer’s market, boutiques, the historic Retlaw Plaza Hotel and the Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts, which is currently displaying an original sculptural piece crafted — perhaps fittingly in the nation’s “Dairy State” — from Cheetos. A bit outside of town, a must-visit is the Kelly County Creamery, offering the self-proclaimed “best ice cream in the middle of nowhere” at a spot Good Morning America proclaimed is one of the country’s top three ice cream parlors. More agri-tourism fun is offered at LeClare Farms, with its award-winning cheese and cute goats in equal measure. Flyways are a tourist draw, too, but not in the form of experimental airplanes; rather, the Canada geese that flock to nearby Horicon Marsh by the tens of thousands at migration time. We can see the boats going by to the municipal marina, coming in off of Lake Michigan.” Walk out to the home’s lower level, and you’ll experience an outdoor oasis, complete with pergola-covered patio, 173 feet of lake frontage, sandy, hard-bottom beach, and a deep water floating dock that can accommodate up to a 50-foot boat. “This home is good for boaters because it’s 5 minutes out to Lake Michigan,” Hughes says. “You could go as far north or south as you like to explore other ports.” If you’re in the mood for traversing the area, the home is a mere 3 miles from the land conservancy (which features 3 miles of hiking and biking trails), 2 miles from Arcadia Bluffs Golf Course, 12 miles from Little River Casino Resort, and 20 miles from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. “We’ve spent a lot of Christmases and holidays at this home, we’ve made a lot of friends in the area, and we’ve spent wonderful times exploring,” Hughes says. “You can walk to Lake Michigan, so it’s been great to share with friends and relatives. Arcadia is a little known secret, and the town is a gem.” ★

Spring Lake, Michigan Luxury Dutch colonial is the ideal property for avid boaters.

S

ettled on a protected Spring Lake bay and propped atop a gently sloping hill, this aptly titled home, “Bayhill,” celebrates West Michigan’s Dutch Country architecture and boasts luxurious modern amenities. “One thing I love about the house is that we have retained the whole feel of it; we just beautified it a little bit,” says homeowner Penny Morse, who, along with her husband, Peter, and local builder Mike Schaap, completely renovated this 1920s home in 2009. “Since it was a historical Dutch Colonial Revival, I wanted to pay tribute to the original house, so we took it down to the studs and built it back up.” The 5-bedroom, 6.5-bathroom home is outfitted with a main floor master suite that includes a 230-square-foot closet, lower level home gym, two-story library, two laundry rooms, lower level movie theatre, massage area, red-light sauna, and a rec room, complete with a bar and juke box. The home also features an art studio and office with den, which could be converted into two additional bedrooms. The large kitchen features high-end appliances including a Sub-Zero refrigerator,

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Miele dishwasher, Wolf range, butler’s pantry and three sinks. But Morse’s favorite room in the house, she says, is the sunroom with fireplace, which is secluded on the far end of the home. It isn’t just the interior of the home that’s impressive; the exterior, sitting on one acre, features exquisite landscaping, a pool with pool house, three outdoor patios, fenced-in backyard, and lower level walkout with outdoor shower. On the water, the Morses installed a remarkable lift system and canopied dock that would be the envy of any boat owner. “Our lift system and dock are quite unique,” Morse says. “We have a connected double-dock that has five lifts: Three electric remote lifts, one of which is a 20,000-pound lift, and the other is 10,000-pounds; then we have two manual lifts for a sailboat and a dinghy.” The home is conveniently located on Spring Lake, right where the Grand River channel connects, making it a quick trip to Lake Michigan or Grand Haven. “This home is the best of both worlds; you have your own inland lake to play in, and you easily can access Lake Michigan,” Morse says. ★

Gorgeous Boulanger Island Potagannissing Bay’s hidden gem. The remote and serene Boulanger island is located approximately one mile from the shores of Drummond Island in Northern Michigan. With 42.8 acres of wooded paradise and a mile of shoreline meeting crystal clear waters, this desirable fourbedroom, three-bath main house is complemented by a one-bedroom, onebath guest cottage. Both houses feature crafted fieldstone fireplaces. Includes a private marina, 30 x 50 partially-heated pole building, sauna, hot tub, composite decks and much more. $1,200,000

Park Place Boat Club & Marina First-class dockage at a renovated marina on South Bass Island.

M

uch like the highly desirable property in the board game Monopoly, Park Place Boat Club and Marina is an impressive, full-service marina located on the quaint island getaway of Put-in-Bay, Ohio. Park Place recently underwent a $2 million renovation and expansion, developing the former Fox’s Dock and Put-in-Bay marinas into a stately, 60-slip harbor that offers twice the amount of docking space, with 30- and 50-amp power, water, cable TV, Wi-Fi, and a convenient gift shop. The marina’s renovation, designed and engineered by John S. Matricardi of KS Associates Inc., involved replacing deteriorated steel cribs and fixed docks with new floating docks. The project also equipped the marina with a new, 10-foot-wide, double sheet pile breakwater that extends 266 feet northeast of the harbor to better protect the docks. “We ripped everything out and then we scraped the bottom, so we now have about a 6-foot depth at the shallowest end up to 18-feet on the north end,” says president Eric Booker. “It’s all brand new — there’s nothing old left; it was all ripped out.”

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Now open for its first full boating season, Park Place Boat Club and Marina offers public docking spaces and also is home to the private Park Place Boat Club, with more than 300 members. The marina can accommodate boats up to 50 feet in length and offers amenities including restaurants, private showers, golf cart rentals, mooring buoys, and water taxi service. Members of the Park Place Boat Club receive discounts on golf cart rentals, 30 cents off fuel and 10 percent food and beverage deals at the nearby Hooligans Irish Pub, The Boardwalk, The UPPER Deck, and The Keys Complex. Neighboring the marina and boat club is the popular restaurant The Keys, which aptly mimics the mood of Key West, Florida, offering a Caribbean and South Floridainspired menu overlooking the harbor. “Put-in-Bay is a destination, and this marina lends a hand to convenient, safe, first-class dockage for the island,” Booker says. “And it certainly is a first-class marina; the docks are well-built and protected from all directions, and we also have an extremely friendly and courteous staff.” ★

Sailboat Runs Aground, Two Rescued 1

16 Stranded on Little Presque Isle

Charleston, SC — May 7 Watchstanders at U.S. Coast Guard Sector Charleston received a report around 9:50 a.m. from the captain of the 36-foot sailing vessel Sunshine, stating foul weather had pushed his boat up on the rocks of the Charleston jetties and had punctured the hull. A small boat crew and an aircrew were launched to assist the male and female passengers. Due to water depth, the boat crew couldn’t get close enough to directly rescue the passengers. Since both passengers had life jackets on, the crew threw them a line and pulled them to the boat. No injuries were reported. Report by dvidshub.net; photo courtesy of USCG

Marquette, MI — April 12 First responders from the U.S. Coast Guard, Marquette County Rescue and Marquette Township Fire Department rescued 16 people from Little Presque Isle after a large area of ice that the people used to get onto the island broke away. One victim called 911. Within 10 minutes, the ice rescue team launched a 25-foot response boat and arrived on scene within 45 minutes. The crew then inflated a 15-foot ice rescue craft, and rescue personnel used the craft to safely transport 14 adults, two children and three dogs back to shore. No injuries were reported and no one ever entered the water. Report by usCGneWs.COM; photo courtesy of USCG

Bodega Bay Accident Leaves Four Dead 2 Sonoma County, CA —April 17 Four fishermen were reported missing on April 17 after their 21-foot pleasure craft didn’t return from an all-day outing. U.S. Coast Guard crew did not receive a distress signal from the vessel. A search was conducted near the Bodega bay coastline. The overturned boat was located in the rocks near Tomales Point in Marin County, according to sheriff’s officials, and two of the passengers’ bodies were discovered. On April 22, the body of another missing boater was found, and on May 10, the fourth and final body was located by a helicopter crew from Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. The boat is believed to have broken up near McClures Beach. The cause of the accident is under investigation. Report by usCGneWs.COM ; photo courtesy of KGO-TV

Mobile, AL — April 25 On April 25, U.S. Coast Guard received a report that a sailing regatta in Mobile Bay was struck by severe weather, causing multiple vessels to capsize and leaving many people in the water. USCG said that 200 people were on 119 boats during the 57th annual Dauphin Island Race. Winds were reportedly in excess of 70 mph. Good Samaritans and local authorities rescued more than 40 sailors from the water. USCG continued to search for five missing boaters, but the number was reduced to four after a survivor was located at his home. A good Samaritan located one body on April 28, and on April 30 two more bodies were recovered in the vicinity of Dauphin Island. USCG and Alabama Law Enforcement Agencies continued to search for the fourth and final missing sailor, but suspended their search April 30. Response crews searched for more than 180 hours and covered more than 9,527 square miles of water and 164 miles of shoreline. Report by usCGneWs.COM ; photo courtesy of Joshua Edwards

Man Killed in Lake Michigan Crash 5 Port Sheldon Township, MI — May 16 A 24-year old Michigan man is dead and three others injured following a crash near Port Sheldon Township on May 16. The boat was reportedly traveling south on Lake Michigan when it hit the outside wall of Pigeon Lake North Pier. Officials say there were four people on the boat. One was pronounced dead on scene, and the others were taken to Grand Rapids area hospitals. The U.S. Coast Guard, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit and Road Patrol, Port Sheldon Fire & Rescue, and several ambulance agencies assisted at the scene. Family members say that the 24-year-old bought the boat two weeks prior to the accident and was excited to take it out. Officials are still investigating the cause of the crash, but did say that conditions were foggy at the time of the accident. Report by MLive.COM; photo courtesy of Fox 17 News

Parents Killed in Louisiana Accident 6 Bush, Louisiana — March 28 Three children were rescued March 28 on the Pearl River Canal after the 14-foot boat they were riding in with their parents overturned. Officials say a 16-year-old boy, who was fishing in the area immediately jumped in and saved two of the children that had gone overboard. He then grabbed the shirt of the woman, who was holding the third child, before both were taken away by a current. The child was found alive underneath the overturned boat a short time later. The father was found the next morning. The mother’s body was recovered from the Bogue Chitto River, less than a mile from the scene of the accident, on April 1. Authorities believe the aluminum boat flipped over a lock after the operator was unable to start the engine. Report by nOLA.COM; photo courtesy of St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office
