ave Wallace, who, for the past 21 years, has penned our popular column “Above the Waterline,” has decided to call it a day and retire after this issue has gone to press. He will be sorely missed by magazine staff, and by his many fans that began their monthly read at the back of the book where Dave dropped anchor on the last page — a place of honor in the magazine business. There are many sides to Dave. He is best described as a Renaissance Man. He’s a pilot that’s logged thousands of hours in the skies. He’s a longtime boater; he and his family cruised the Great Lakes aboard their Grand Banks trawler, Dragon Lady, about which he has written numerous times in his column. He is an accomplished scuba diver in the Caribbean, where he spent countless hours exploring under water. Dave is the most creative guy I know. In addition to his monthly column in Lakeland Boating, he helped design our “Ports O’ Call Cruising Guides,” which, in my opinion, are the best on the market. He has written and published collections of poetry,
Publisher Walter “Bing” O’Meara
where he reminisces about his adventures and observations over the decades; and he’s written several books that tend toward life’s challenges — challenges that he, personally, has battled and learned from. Dave is an eternal optimist with the ability to take life’s curve balls and turn them into home runs. Dave, we wish you a happy retirement in your new life — one without deadlines! With the holiday season upon us, it’s that time of year folks scramble to get houses decorated, cookies baked and presents wrapped. But if you’re like me, you’ll want to push the “easy” button; get your friends and loved ones that perfect gift without fighting traffic and waiting in long lines. Electrical Clarification I get a lot of boating magazines and enjoy Lakeland immensely. I retired from Sea Ray after 37 years, and part of it was spent in international sales. In those days, the ’90s, we considered Canada “international.” I had the good fortune to travel the Rideau Canal in a 46-foot Sea Ray with our Ottawa dealer, Peter Hurst. I always think of it running from Ottawa to Kingston, since that’s the way I went. We ended the three-day trip with a customer rendezvous in Kingston. Managing those locks became easy, and I have fond memories of the trip. You (Kim Lunman) did a good job on the Rideau story (“Cruising Back in Time,” August 2014, page 43). I want to offer one critique on a paragraph in your August “From the Helm” column (page 4). You said “...the boat was plugged in to a power pedestal… that was supplying more electricity to the boat that it could handle, and the excess juice was being leaked into the water…”

That is misleading in that it implies there was some pressure supply at the pedestal forcing excess electricity thru the power cords and therefore causing an “electricity rupture” from the boat. Electricity is drawn down the lines to ground, and the boat apparently had a fault that allowed electricity to flow to a ground outside the boat. This was all well explained in the electric shock drowning story by Chris Dolan (“The Invisible Danger,” August 2014, page 30). We had such an ESD event here in Tennessee last year, and it is a very high profile problem. Chris did a good job on the article. By the way, that’s my boat in the Great Lakes Boat Top ad on page 49 of the August 2014 issue! The photo was taken on our local Tellico Lake, home of Great Lakes Boat Top. —Roger Giles, Knoxville, TN

Life Jacket Type Code Labels Removed

Phase two of Restoration initiative unveiled
For years, the U.S. Coast Guard has required life jackets to adhere by a type code system — Type I, II, III, IV and V — meant to differentiate life jackets and their specific uses. On October 22, in an effort to become more consumer friendly, USCG finally dropped the labeling system. “The boating safety community believes this move by the Coast Guard will help lead the way towards more comfortable and innovative life jacket designs, help boaters stay on the right side of the law, lower costs, and save lives,” says Chris Edmonton, BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety president and chairman of the National Safe Boating Council. He says removal of the coding system will create less confusion. A complete list of life jacket types and descriptions is available at boatus.oRg/life-jackets.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative hosted a group of Great Lakes mayors and officials back in September to discuss ways of protecting Great Lakes drinking water in lieu of the recent algae bloom that proliferated much of Lake Erie this summer, triggered an August shutdown of the drinking water system in Toledo, Ohio. According to a MichiganRadio.oRg article, the second phase of EPA’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative was unveiled at the summit, which was held at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. Phase Two of the five-year plan will be implemented in Fiscal Years 2014 through 2019 and will include: Cleaning up the 43 Great Lakes areas of concern; preventing and controlling invasive species; reducing nutrient runoff that contributes to harmful algal blooms; and restoring habitat to protect native species. 115-Year-Old Shipwreck Discovered in Lake Superior In 1899, the 199-foot, threemasted schooner, Nelson, sailed head-on into a spring gale, tragically claiming the lives of nine passengers. Recently, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS) located the burial site for Nelson on the bottom of Lake Superior near Grand Marais, Michigan. “This is a shipwreck that we’ve wanted to find for a very long time”, says GLSHS director of marine operations Darryl Ertel. GLSHS found the ship using a combination of historical research and technology, after having mapped areas where ships were reported lost. Nelson currently lies in more than 200 feet of water and is “amazingly intact,” according to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. For more information visit shipwreckmuseum.com.

Systems in Check Four helpful tips for avoiding warranty woes.
W
hile granddad may have been able to get by with the dealer’s word and a firm handshake on his new boat purchase, sadly those days are long gone — particularly when it comes to service after the sale. Want to make sure you’re covered before Murphy and his law have a chance to climb aboard? Check out these common sense warranty tips every buyer should heed when purchasing a new boat.
Boat warranty defined
TIP #1: Read the warranty before you buy Reviewing the warranty beforehand allows you to verify it actually delivers the service and protection claimed by the dealer and that it does so for the entire warranty period. For example, the 5-year engine warranty offered by manufacturers A and B appear identical, except Manufacturer B uses the term “pro-rated,” while A states its warranty is “non-declining.” It may seem like semantics, but it’s a variation that could cost you big money. Pro-rated means that B can reduce its liability costs for repairs over the life of the warranty; by comparison, Manufacturer A’s non-declining warranty coverage is the same on the last day of your warranty as it is on the first — meaning coverage doesn’t decline based on engine age or use.
A boat warranty is simply a manufacturer’s written promise to stand behind its product after the sale. Although required by law to state the basics (what’s covered, how long it’s covered for, and how it will be corrected should problems arise), boat warranties are different from the terrestrial versions most buyers are familiar with.
TIP #2: Don’t assume your warranty covers everything Unlike your new car, boat warranties are actually comprised of numerous warranties offered by the manufacturers of its various components. The builder, of course, warranties the hull, but buyers can receive separate warranties for most anything else, from engines to icemakers. These individual warranties can vary greatly between manufacturers (both in scope and duration), meaning you’ll want to review each carefully to see what’s covered and for how long. Some manufacturers offer “bow to stern” warranties, a nod to the “bumper to bumper” coverage of the automobile industry. This means the dealer will either cover any issue that arises or coordinate warranty repairs with the various manufacturers during the all-inclusive warranty period they’re offering (typically 5 years). Not all such warranties are created equal, however, so make sure your definition of all-inclusive matches theirs.
Capt. Frank Lanier is an award-winning journalist, boat maintenance guru and owner of Capt. F.K. Lanier & Associates, Marine Surveyors and Consultants (captfklanier.com).
14
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
TIP #3: Understand the claims process Start by asking the who, what, when and where questions regarding your coverage. What’s the process for filing a warranty claim? Are there time limits on claims? Do you return to the original place of purchase for repairs, or can you use any authorized service facility?
|
novembeR / DeCembeR 2014
Explore gray areas or unusual circumstances that may not be clearly addressed. Can you void the warranty by doing your own maintenance? If the boat has to be returned to the builder for repair, who pays the haul-out fees and transportation costs? That massive oil leak at the generator may be covered by the manufacturer, but who foots the bill for cleaning the bilge afterwards? When making a claim, follow the requirements as described in your policy while ensuring the entire process is properly documented. It’s okay to phone your dealer to discuss a problem and how it will be addressed, but always follow up in writing. Paper and/or e-mail trails are crucial, not only to confirm all parties are aware of the issue and in agreement as to how it will be resolved, but also as back-up should a legal dispute arise.
TIP #4: Clarify the rules on “transferable” warranties Builders hype the benefits of transferable warranties (those that can be passed on to second owners) as a valuable selling point; however, some have more loopholes and exclusions than a signed-in-blood contract with the Cloven-hoofed one himself. Make sure you understand the transfer process and documentation requirements, as well as any fees or time limitations, to prevent voiding this part of your warranty. Finally, if you’re considering the purchase of an extended warranty, put on your “let’s make a deal” face before pulling out that wallet. Most manufacturers almost always are hawking some type of incentive when purchasing a new boat: Cash back, free warranty extensions, etc. Planning your purchase around such events can save you money on an extended warranty or even allow you to get it for free. Don’t be afraid to use inclusion of an extended warranty as a bargaining chip to close the sale. LB

Selection Perfection Tips for outfitting your boat with the most effective electronics.
T
ake a leisurely stroll through your local marine supply store or up and down the aisles of your favorite boat show, and the choice of electronic gizmos and gadgets is bewildering. So naturally, this begs the question: How do you choose the right electronics for your particular boat?
cabin. It therefore makes sense, regardless of the type of boating that you do, to have an MFD at the top of your wish list. It can be your primary electronic equipment, which you just use for charts and then connect up additional instruments and increase its functionality as needs — and finances — dictate.
Equipment decisions
Size matters
First things first. I recommend that you sit down and think about the type of boating you do. If your boat is primarily used for fishing, then a good sonar or fishfinder should be high on your list. If you sail, then you’ll most likely require good wind speed and direction instrumentation. Cruisers will be more interested in electronic charting devices. Make two lists: One should contain the things that you absolutely can’t do without, and the other should include features that would be “nice to have, but not necessary.” Not all that long ago, most marine electronics were “stand-alone” items — meaning that there wasn’t any sort of networking among the devices. If you had two helms and needed a depth sounder at both the upper and lower steering stations, there was no alternative but to install two independent, separate systems on board. Thankfully, in the late 1980s, NMEA 0183 networking was finally introduced. This allowed instruments to share data or “talk to each other,” although this communication between devices tended to be proprietary to each manufacturer. In recent years, 0183 has been largely superseded by NMEA 2000, which has the added advantage of allowing the boat owner to mix and match equipment from different manufacturers and, perhaps more importantly, allows the boat owner to easily add extra instrumentation.
Because you’ll use your MFD each time you take the boat out, give consideration to the physical size of the display. Check out the options available and make sure that the MFD you select will fit in the available dash space. Much like a tablet or smartphone, many MFDs are touch screen, which may be fine when you’re perusing the boat show, but not exactly ideal while on a small boat trying to access on-screen menus and bouncing over 3- and 4-footers at 25 knots. Depending on your typical boating conditions, a MFD with more traditional knobs and buttons might be a better choice. There also are combination displays, where data can be inputted and menus accessed via what manufacturers have termed “hybrid technology.” With these types of displays, you have the choice of using either traditional knobs or touching the screen, similar to how you use a smartphone or tablet/handheld device.
MFDs: A jumping-off point When it comes to spending money on electronics for your boat, the sky really is the limit. These days, you can spend upwards of $50,000 to $60,000 on a complete suite of electronics for a large cruising boat, which will give you all the bells and whistles and then some. But almost without exception, the heart of your onboard electronics system will be some sort of GPS. Often, you’ll hear fellow boaters talk about their GPS or chartplotter, but these devices are more accurately called “multifunction displays” (MFDs). Although the primary role of a MFD is to display a nautical chart or other navigational information, they can do oh-so much more: Show radar displays, sonar, engine data… even play videos or allow you to adjust the lighting in the boat’s

Installation
Often, a multifunction display, or MFD for short, can be the one piece of electronic equipment you install on board to handle all your basic navigation/ charting needs. If you’re into DIY projects, feel free to tackle this one on your own; but if you’re adding radar, sounders, etc., it may be best to enlist the help of a professional.
If you’re a fairly competent DIY-er, installing a MFD is fairly straightforward. One word of caution: You must adhere to the installation instructions that come with the unit with regard to correct wire sizing, distance from the main steering compass, and so forth. Generally speaking, however, you can consider this a weekend project. Things get a bit more complicated if you want to install radar, sounders and other hardware, which may involve drilling holes in the bottom of the boat. For this, it may be wise to seek out the services of a competent boatyard or electronics installer. One thing’s for sure: With the right electronics on board, your chances of landing that “big one,” cruising to an idyllic anchorage, or winning the Mackinac race will be that much greater! LB

H
eck, I’m no Hannibal Smith, but sometimes it takes coordination and gumption to accept and complete a mission. In this case, the assignment was a sea trial of the new Carver C37 Coupe. The mission: To overnight on her and test out not only the C37’s cruisability, but also her livability. After some coaxing of Lakeland’s editor and a bit of schmoozing with the Carver rep, it was mission accomplished.
“I love it when a plan comes together.” — Hannibal Smith, “The A Team”
She’s got cruisability
I managed to convert a several-hours-long sea trial on the C37 into an overnight cruise to really test out the boat’s living, lounging and relaxing capabilities. Thanks to the husband and wife captains’ team of Donald and Natalie Hannon, they handled most of the driving while I was able to gauge the ride from every location on board. We blazed a course from Miami south to the Ocean Reef Club via Biscayne Bay and several well-marked channels. The added benefit was that the three of us had some frank discussion regarding the boat and its virtues. From behind the wheel, Donald noted the C37’s great visibility. Two large, curved panes make up the front windshield. A center mullion does not impede sight lines and also allows the wipers to park vertically in that dead zone (horizontally parked wipers tend to collect debris). Large side windows have opening panes to allow for fresh air or to converse with those outside. Aft, three large, glass panels offer top-to-bottom viewing; the starboard panel is a swing-out door, while the other two are bi-fold setups. As we departed Miami, Capt. Donald deftly maneuvered the C37 out of a corner slip (next to a very unforgiving concrete seawall, I might add) using the Axius system joystick control. Once clear, he switched to shifter controls for seamless operation of the twin MerCruiser 377 Magnum gasoline engines. Producing 320 horses apiece, it was easy to cruise at 25 knots, or kick into high gear and blast it to over 34 knots — all while having complete and total control. We remarked on the true “trackability” of her hull. Even in a fresh breeze, the C37 stayed her course. While up on plane the C37 ran dry, as evidenced by her clean windshield — and the fact that I could sit on the aft deck seat without getting sprayed.
Impressing the locals
Clearly, the C37 boasts an impressive hull and wake; a school of dolphins played in the wash to port and starboard as we motored underway. Jumping clear out of the water at times, the ever-present school seemed to continually nod in approval of the C37 and the way she rode. Mixing it up, we stopped for lunch at a local watering hole in the Upper Keys. Alabama Jacks is a favorite of locals and tourists alike, from posh Porsche drivers to biker dudes (and ladies) of all ages. The beer is cold, the conch fritters tasty, and the environment colorful, thanks to the eclectic patronage and seasoned servers.

deck seating, open the doors and push the backrest from the aft sofa seat forward. Across to starboard is the galley. It’s centrally located for serving fore and aft. With a Euro Kera two-burner cooktop,
No problem getting the C37 on and off the dock. And with the optional Skyhook Electronic Anchoring system, you can effortlessly hold position to get lines ready/secured or tidy up when leaving. At the Ocean Reef Club the Carver C37 was nestled in among larger yachts, but looked more like a younger sibling than an out-of place relative. With a high freeboard, sheer line extending aft, high railings for safety, and a swept-back house, the C37 stands out, albeit tastefully, thanks to her elegant style. And woven throughout that style is plenty of function — including the aft deck awning that electrically extends from the hardtop, low profile radar arch, and raised combing around the aft seating that blends in with the overall lines. Aft deck accessories include a teak table, vinyl carpeting, icemaker and refrigerator. A large storage compartment is housed in the transom, accessible from the integrated swim platform. This is the ideal place to store lines, dockside power…
under-counter Dometic fridge, Cuisinart microwave, stainless steel sink, and plentiful drawers and cabinets, it’s a piece of cake catering to guests’ culinary delights while also enjoying their company. The TV and stereo are mounted in the starboard corner, easily and conveniently watched and controlled while dining in, or while sipping a nightcap out on the aft deck. In-floor storage is generous for use as a pantry for dry goods and also houses the hot water heater. Forward to port is a twin bench seat and built-in, in-dash chart storage. The helm station, located across to starboard, features twin bolstered helm seats complete with armrests. Tilt steering wheel and engine controls are positioned inboard, so guests can cozy up to the window. The console is large enough for your choice of engine/chart/radar displays. All controls and switches are within easy reach for a pleasantly ergonomic setup. Adding to the livability factor are the two lower staterooms.
whatever you need. Stash fenders in the compartment beneath the corner aft seat. No wasted space here! Access to the engine room is via a hatch in the aft deck floor. Carver installed a mini step ladder to assist in the descent/ascent, as the room is rather deep. You easily can get at the engines, especially the fronts for typical maintenance tasks such as the changing/checking of belts, fluids, strainers, etc. If you need to pop out the powerplants, the entire aft deck was designed for easy removal and to save the expense — and nail-biting stress — of cutting into the boat.
Forward is the master, which features center island full-sized berth, overhead screened hatch, hanging lockers, 20-inch TV, and 6 feet, 5 inches of headroom. A guest stateroom offers side-by-side twin bunks that convert to a queen with filler cushions, locker, and more than 6 feet of headroom. The three of us overnighted on board, which was remarkably comfortable. We shared the single head, complete with shower stall, basin sink, vanity, electric toilet, and storage cabinet and shelves. The next day we made the social rounds on the docks, saying hello to a few captain friends and clicking off a few photos. Then it was full speed ahead (well, almost) as we hightailed it back to Miami. Even in a bit of chop, the C37 performed effortlessly; no pitching or yawing here. Your boat should have the ability to deliver fun, form and safety, and it’s definitely not a “Mission: Impossible” with the Carver C37 Coupe. Check her out for yourself and see. Tell them Hannibal sent you. LB
Come on in
Step inside the C37, and you’ll feel like you’re outside. The salon windows introduce copious amounts of light, as does the overhead glass sunroof. To port is a U-shaped sectional sofa (which I can personally attest is comfy) flanking a hi-lo table that converts to a sleeper. For additional aft

Walstrom & garmin: a dynamic duo
garmin. The name conjures up an image of “finding your way.” Founded in 1989 by Gary Burrell and Min Kao, Garmin has since grown to become the industry leader in the personal GPS category, having shipped more than 126 million units by Spring 2014.
Walstrom Marine of Harbor Springs, Michigan, has recognized the ease of operation, functionality and robust construction of Garmin’s offerings and now recommend Garmin products for new builds and updates on boats of all sizes. Let’s take a look at a few of the current offerings in Tiara Yachts’ lineup and explore a couple of Garmin’s premier offerings. Standard equipment on the new Tiara 50 Coupe is the advanced Garmin/Volvo Glass Cockpit, featuring two GPSMAP 8215 15-inch displays with GRID armrest remote and Volvo Autopilot with Joystick Driving for the IPS950 pods. This system incorporates an interface that operates like your smartphone. Chartplotters, sonar, radar, video, and engine displays all can be operated directly on the touch screen monitors or while seated at the helm via the GRID armrest remote. The bright, crisp XGA touchscreen comes standard with preloaded BlueChart® g2 maps of the U.S. coast and includes pinch-to-zoom and other touch controls for intuitive operation. Anti-glare and LED
backlighting makes it easy to view in bright sunlight. And autodimming provides outstanding visibility at night. GPSMAP 8215 integrates various sonar technologies, as well as autopilot, connectivity, apps, engine data, and multi-media. User data automatically can be synced for all networked 8000 Series chartplotters across multiple helms. Everything you need is at your fingertips, all on one screen. Note the helm photos (pictured above) of the Tiara 50 Coupe; installation of the Glass Cockpit is so clean, that there are only seven switches necessary to operate wipers and nav lighting! A smaller application is the Garmin GPSMAP 7215 15-inch display installed on Walstrom’s Tiara 39 Coronet. The 7215s offers similar ease of operation on the 39 Coronet (powered by a traditional Cummins inboard diesel drive system) as the Glass Cockpit system does on the IPS-powered 50 Coupe. Within minutes, a new owner can be up to speed with system basics and feeling comfortable with the operation of their new vessel’s electronics. Now’s the time to consider what electronics you’d like to have installed on your next vessel; and Garmin should be your first choice. Contact Walstrom Marine for a demonstration at your convenience. You’ll be glad you did!

great lakes Boat top
The company to call for great canvas
in all likelihood, if you’ve been aboard a boat sometime during the last 60 years, you’ve probably enjoyed weather protection afforded by Great Lakes Boat Top canvas. Founded in 1957, Great Lakes Boat Top is one of the largest and most recognized marine canvas suppliers in the world. As indicated by its namesake, the company got its start in the Great Lakes region designing and manufacturing canvas products for boatbuilders. From Bimini tops to full canvas enclosures, Great Lakes Boat Top delivered builders superior quality products backed by superior caliber customer service. “We have built a successful company by treating customers the way we’d expect to be treated,” says Jim Wilson, president of Great Lakes Boat Top. “We don’t want to just make one sale and be done; we want customers for life. And to achieve that, you must deliver a good-quality product and stand behind it 100 percent.” That practice has paid off for the company, since the vast majority of the world’s top boat brands depend on Great Lakes Boat Top to pattern and manufacture their canvas options year after year. “We’ve worked with some boat companies for decades,” says Wilson. “They trust us with their brand’s reputation. That’s a powerful endorsement of our product and our people.”
The company moved to Vonore, Tennessee in 1984 and operates a second location in Coco Beach, Florida. In addition to providing new canvas options to brands like Sea Ray, Regal, Boston Whaler, Four Winns, Malibu, Grady-White, Bayliner, and dozens more, Great Lakes Boat Top offers replacement canvas to individual boat owners who have late model boats that were originally equipped with Great Lakes Boat Top canvas. “New canvas can instantly make an older boat look like new again,” says Wilson. “And because we have the original patterns for canvas options, our canvas is going to fit the way it fit in the showroom.” Customer Steve Carlsen of Bothell, Washington, agrees. When his canvas arrived in the mail, he described it as “amazing!” “It looks absolutely identical to what’s on the boat now,” he says. “Fifteen years later, you were able to recreate the OEM top. I’m an engineering manager in a manufacturing company, and I know how hard this is. Please pass my many thanks and delight on to your team. Well done!” To find out if Great Lakes Boat Top has patterns for your boat’s canvas, and for a free quote, visit the company’s website, greatlakesboattop.com

Carver yaChts C43 Coupe to deBut at MiaMi show
For More than 60 years, Carver has been building boats that are designed from the inside out to be exceptionally seaworthy; boats that offer real comfort on the water, as well as at the dock. And the new C43 Coupe, which will be unveiled at the 2015 Miami International Boat Show this coming February, is no exception to this rule. Following Carver Yachts’ distinctive design philosophy, the new C43 offers clean, contemporary lines and a distinctive hull shape. Step inside this masterfully designed, two-stateroom yacht, and you’ll immediately notice the best-in-class headroom. What’s more, Carver Yachts designers have gone to great lengths to ensure that 360-degree views from the salon’s large opening windows won’t compromise the yacht’s abundant seating and storage. And that means more comfort for owners, family members and guests. Owners also will enjoy the broad, single-level salon that becomes part of a seamless indoor-outdoor living space when the sliding glass door to the roomy cockpit is open. They’ll
likewise appreciate the large, comfortable berths, well-appointed aft galley, private owners’ head with stall shower, and separate head for day use and overnight guests. And for those perfect summer days, they’ll love the large swim platform, electric glass sunroof, available sun pad, retractable sun shade, and wet bar for the cockpit. But the C43 is more than her accommodations. On the water, experienced boaters will understand the importance of her raised sheer, single-level, walk-around decks with integrated railings, and the interior helm station, which allows the captain to drive while seated, standing, or leaning against a flip-up bolster. Created by designers and engineers who know what it’s like to boat in harsh conditions, the new C43 easily can take a pounding without sacrificing a soft, smooth ride, and get out and back again in unbelievable comfort. Everything in the new C43, down to the last detail, has carefully been planned to provide the best possible boating experience.

The PRESTIGE 420 is the only flybridge model in the 40-foot market segment today with a wide-body central cabin and independent access. Both stairways on board privately serve each of the yacht’s two staterooms. The master stateroom is roomy with plenty of storage space and boasts an independent head with separate shower. The forward cabin features a slightly altered, yet generously sized layout, complete with a head designed for direct day access. This yacht goes further in its promises with its power package: A Volvo Penta IPS (400 or 500) engine, offering exceptional maneuverability. The 420 is the most efficient, economical IPS400 available in the flybridge segment to date; and the IPS500 version is equally impressive, capable of producing a top speed of 34 knots.

Regardless of your favorite activities, the 204LF has everything you need. Whether you’re heading out for a day of fishing or playing, the boat’s features are seamlessly integrated to fit the desired activity. Standard features include a large, center-mounted, lighted livewell under an oversized aft center seat, flanked by additional oversized seating and situated behind a roomy fiberglass cockpit that is protected by a full wrap-around windshield with side vents. Multiple stainless steel rod holders are located aft, with oversized port and starboard swim perches and an outwardfacing, three-step boarding ladder. Additional rod holders line the cockpit walls.
The deep, secure bow works great for creating a safe area for the kids, or it can be converted into an angler’s paradise with the optional fishing package, which includes features like a forward livewell; fishing seat; trolling motor mount; integrated, two-drawer tackle box; and trim panel. An optional rigging station sets up amidships for sorting and attaching lures. The 204LF’s interior is made up of a rich-looking, two-tone latte and white stain-resistant vinyl. The modern earth-tone look continues with the captain and passenger dashes. A deep brown hue sets off driftwood dash panels, gauges with chrome bezels, and other complementary chrome accents. Dashes are capped off with a low-profile brow to increase visibility while underway. When you’re ready to hit the water for some fishing, check out the 204LF. Anglers appreciate both its functionality and versatility, not to mention its sleek, sport boat good looks.

Why Boats Sink at the Dock
Five things you can do to keep your boat from catching fire: 1. Make sure that every piece of electrical equipment on board has a proper fuse of an appropriate size 2. Check if anything is wired directly to the batteries; if it is, add a proper fuse or circuit breaker 3. Change your impeller if you haven’t done so in the past two years 4. Take the electric space heater off your boat 5. Check for burn marks on the shore power plug that indicate arcing and replace it and/or your shore power inlet if you do find any
Five things you can do to keep your boat from sinking: 1. Check your thru-hull fittings and seacocks or valves to be sure they aren’t cracked or corroded 2. Service seacocks or replace valves if they don’t open and close easily, or if the handle has come off or been damaged 3. Check all below-waterline hoses and replace any that are more than 10 years old, or ones that are cracked, bulging or have soft spots 4. SARGO 36 Fly
SARGO 28 Explorer
HaiLing from finLand, SARGO boats (formerly known as Minor Offshore) has been around for 47 years. The Sarin family, who own SARGO, decided that with the boats’ growing international exposure, it was time to change the company name to a more dynamic moniker, especially for the English language buyer/audience. The SARGO line of boats, ranging from 25 to 36 feet in length, is practically custom-built for the Great Lakes region. The conditions in northern Finland, where these boats are manufactured, are almost identical to those of the Great Lakes: Short seasons, unpredictable weather and rough seas. When the weather cooperates, simply open the large sunroof and two sliding pilot house doors, as well as the rear window, to create a feeling of freedom and being close to the elements. SARGO customers in the United States really appreciate the versatility of these rugged, yet elegant yachts. They’re used for commuting, cruising, fishing and exploring. All SARGO boats are built to order, and the family-run boatyard is open to customization to meet the individual owners’ wishes and requirements. “There is indeed something very special about boats made in this part of Finland,” says Thomas Sarin, CEO of Sarin Boats Ltd., which manufactures the SARGO brand. “I guess it’s the Ostrobothnian nature, skill and creativity of the designers and craftsmen that explain the robust toughness of the trustworthy SARGO boat.”

safe around children and pets. We are so pleased with its performance that we ordered some as a gift for my parents’ camper. They are now enjoying it as well. Thanks again for a great product!” Kanberra Gel® enjoys a wide range of uses in the marine industry, including air purifying in various interior areas on board boats, as well as fighting mold and mildew during the winter storage period. valvtect ethanol gasoline treatment as most Boaters know, ethanol blended gasoline can cause problems with your boat’s gasoline engine. While fuel stability and phase separation are well known, corrosion of internal engine components may be the most serious (and expensive to fix) problem caused by ethanol blended gasoline. Water and metal don’t like each other! Since E-10 (10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline) can hold up to 5,000 parts per million of water in suspension compared with only 200 parts per million in pure gasoline, the huge amount of suspended water in E-10 can cause corrosion of certain engine and fuel system components unless protected by a corrosion inhibitor. Ethanol-blended gasoline can absorb moisture that builds up in the fuel system and cause corrosion, especially when the boat is not being used. This problem can be severe in older marine engines, when components were not made for ethanol blends. ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment and ValvTect Marine Gasoline both contain a substantial amount of corrosion inhibitor (in addition to a stabilizer, moisture dispersant and detergent) that have been test-proven to completely prevent corrosion in ethanol blended gasoline as well as non-ethanol gasoline. When tested in E-10 using the petroleum industry’s required test for corrosion, both ValvTect products received perfect A ratings (meaning no rust). To protect your boat’s engine from corrosion and all other ethanol fuelrelated problems, only use a fuel additive proven by petroleum industry tests to prevent corrosion, like ValvTect.

Ensenada, in Mexico’s Baja California, provides Great Lakes boaters with an exotic escape during the cold winter months. by heather steinberger
S
ummer passes quickly in northern climates. All too soon, ice has locked up the Great Lakes, and boats sit in storage buildings and under shrink wrap, waiting for spring. That’s not all bad news, however. The offseason can provide valuable opportunities to travel and discover new boating playgrounds. Many Great Lakes boaters, like their East Coast counterparts, have discovered Mexican Caribbean destinations like Isla Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Cancún. A smaller group heads west, bound for Los Cabos at the
tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. Few will turn their eyes to the scalloped Pacific coast and rolling green hills of northern Baja’s border country, just 78 miles south of San Diego. Earlier this year, I traveled to Ensenada, Baja California, to see what treasures it might hold. I quickly learned what West Coast boaters have known for years. This is more than a city of 280,000 people, more than the first major port south of the U.S. Mexico border, more than the terminus of the venerable, 66-year-old, 125-mile Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race.

She’s called the “Cinderella of the Pacific,” and she’s a city worthy of the title. Great Lakes visitors likely will arrive in Ensenada by air or land. You can book a flight to Tijuana or San Diego, then rent a car, hop on public transportation, or investigate shuttle options with your hotel (Ensenada has more than 3,500 rooms, from one- to five-star). For example, Hotel Coral & Marina guests who fly into San Diego can meet a hotel shuttle at the airport or at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, which is an easy trolley ride from downtown. At San Ysidro, U.S. Interstate Highway 5 crosses into Tijuana, and from there the shuttle takes you along magnificent México 1; past Fox’s Baja Studios at Rosarito, where Titanic was filmed; and right to the hotel’s front door. If you decide to drive across the border (see sidebar to get information about required documentation and Mexican insurance), you may be surprised to discover that it’s a complete nonevent. It’s absolutely effortless from the U.S. side. This is the busiest land border crossing in the world, with roughly 50,000 vehicles and 25,000 people on foot crossing each day. Historically, lines have been quite long on the Mexico side as vehicles and pedestrians, including countless daily commuters, wait to cross into the United States. Since I had a flight home out of San Diego, I was told to allot plenty of extra time. It took nearly two hours. Those monstrous wait times could be a thing of the past, however. At press time, San Diego news outlets reported that, after years of construction and lane closures, U.S. border authorities have opened all 25 lanes to northbound traffic. Waits are now measured in minutes rather than hours.

Her face toward the sea Ensenada, one of the Californias’ earliest settlements, has always turned her face to the sea. The native Yuman Indians would travel to the waterfront for seafood (the Pai-Pai, Kumeyaay, Cucapá and Kiliwa nations continue to live in the area today). Early settlers relied on the sea as their lifeline for food, supplies and communications. Today, residents and visitors alike stroll the waterfront malecon, watch the cruise ships come in, and check out the fresh catch at the outdoor market. And they take advantage of the city’s world-class boating facilities so they can cruise, dive, paddle, and fish the impossibly blue Pacific waters. For trailerboaters, there are launch ramps at the three Ensenada marinas — Hotel Coral & Marina, Baja Naval and Ensenada Cruiseport Village — as well as at the Estero Beach Resort, for a fee if you’re not a guest. You also can use the cement launch ramp at Punta Banda Rincon, and if you have a kayak, canoe or dinghy, there are beach launch facilities at Campo La Jolla. If you’ve arrived in Ensenada by air, or by car minus a trailerable boat, don’t worry. This city offers plenty of opportunities to get out on the water. The marinas are overflowing with local charter boats and captains who are willing to take passengers on half- or full-day trips to enjoy fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, whale-watching, and even surfing. At Isla Todos Santos, just 12 miles offshore, wave faces can reach 60 feet at a famous site called “Killers.” Professionals flock here, and this past June, the iconic breaks from Salsipuedes to Killers was designated the sixth World Surfing Reserve. During my stay, I took advantage of a sunset cruise in Bahía de Todos Santos and along the Ensenada waterfront aboard the 47-foot Bertram Papa Loco. Our captain, Miguel, worked as a professional fisherman on a tuna seiner for many years. These days, he offers his expertise to sportfishing enthusiasts. Boating is the obvious highlight, but if you’re looking for

land-based adventure, Ensenada is a good base from which to try horseback-riding, hiking, mountain biking, and ATV excursions. The national parks at Sierra de Juarez and San Pedro Mártir aren’t too far away, either.
The Ruta del Vino You’ll definitely want to visit Baja California’s Ruta del Vino, the renowned Valle de Guadalupe wine country. Major hotels like the Hotel Coral offer shuttle service so you can tour the Vine and Wine Museum, which opened in 2012 and remains the only such facility in Mexico; savor a meal at one of the many diverse wine-country restaurants, such as the new farm-to-table, open-air Malva Cocina de Baja California; and sample the various wines in the valley, which is now home to more than 60 wineries. The oldest, Bodegas de Santo Tomás, opened in 1888. At the five-year-old Hacienda La Lomita winery, you can taste signature Baja California wines such as the leggy, full-flavored 2011 Pagano (in its über-cool square bottle); the bright, polished 2011 Tinto de la Hacienda; and the smooth, buttery 2013 Espacio Blanco while cleansing your palate with locally made artisanal breads, and marmalade and fresh Paloma cheese made by the owner’s mother. “Winemaking is getting to be a very big business,” says Fernando Pérez Castro, 37, Hacienda La Lomita’s proprietor. “It’s about 20 percent of our economy, and it’s growing 0.5 percent annually. “It’s an exciting time,” he continues. “There are five or six new wineries being built right now, and several new places to eat. I’ve lived on the border all my life, and I can honestly say that the 2008 economic crisis was great for this area. The spring-break and party places closed, and they’re now art galleries. There’s amazing mescal, street food, craft beers. And you’re going to meet owners, chefs, all kinds of people who are passionate about their community and about what they’re doing.”

Bodegas de Santo Tomas
Five years ago, Ensenada first emerged on the radar in Mexico as one of the most important places to eat. Part of that, Castro says, is the wine produced in the valley. The other part is “how careful we are with our food.” “It’s mind-blowing what’s happening in gastronomy here,” he comments. “‘Baja Med’ is a big movement that’s giving Mexican cuisine a new name, and because it’s a mixture of southern California and northern Baja, it unites us all. It’s like there’s no border.” Indeed, this is a rapidly transforming economy, thanks in part to the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California. Not only was UABC ranked the second-best public university in the country in a national 2008 survey, it’s home to Mexico’s only enology school and offers degrees in gastronomy as well. “A lot of young people are working in the new ‘Baja Med’ culture,” says Roberto Alcocer, chef at Malva Cocina de Baja California, located at the Mina Penélope vineyard. Just 30 years old, Alcocer earned a bachelor’s degree in gastronomy; studied for a year in Bordeaux, France; completed additional coursework in Belgium; and practiced his craft in France before returning home. Malva is one of the newer restaurants, and as Alcocer executes his own unique farm-to-table vision, he draws inspiration from local indigenous cultures. On the menu during my visit, in fact, was a salad with locally harvested fruits and wild mustard, fennel, arugula, rosemary and malva, the restaurant’s namesake. From there, I tucked into a masterfully prepared escolar with a jicama puree, lemon puree, and more local greens. Between the resurgence of interest in the region’s traditional indigenous cultures and burgeoning economic opportunities presented by the wineries and restaurants, there’s great hope for the future of Mexico’s border region. Castro perhaps says it best. “We’re writing our own history right now, all of us together,” he says. “This is our spring.”

Simply walk through downtown Ensenada, and you’ll see the positive changes afoot in the city. Yes, this is still an important cruise-ship port, particularly for Pacific Princess and Carnival, and it has its requisite shopping district for day-tripping passengers. But there’s so much more. Visit the 1930 Hotel Riviera del Pacífico, which flourished as a destination for U.S. glitterati for a few short years — until the U.S. repeal of the Volstead Act ended Prohibition in 1933 and Mexico outlawed gambling in 1938. “The hotel was inspired by Monaco and the French Riviera,” says Rafael González Bartrina of the Seminario de Historia de Baja California, who moved to Ensenada as a child in 1948. “It’s our pride and joy.” Today, the genteel, confectionlike property is home to a regional history museum, a cultural center, a collection of valuable 1929 Alfredo Ramos Martínez murals, and popular
legends about Al Capone and the mafia. Take a tour, and stop at the bar for a margarita, which allegedly was invented here. Across the street, where sand dunes tumbled to the shore in Bartrina’s boyhood days, you’ll find a science museum and a new aquarium facility that is currently underway. In the meantime, you can view the art exhibits at the nearby Centro Estatal de Las Artes and pick up a coffee at Cafe Tomas, which Gabriel Shimomoto of Ensenada’s state tourism office insisted is the city’s best. Tour the city’s many other art galleries, visit the original history museum (once the Mexican army’s headquarters and a municipal jail), stroll the sweeping waterfront malecon, and watch waves roll across the Bahía de Todos Santos from the large public beach. If you’re thirsty, consider a stop at the famous 1892 cantina Hussong’s, or pop into Wendlandt’s Cerveceria, an intimate pub where you can get an impressive sample board of hand-crafted beers.

“Craft beer is the latest thing in Ensenada,” Shimomoto says. “We had more than 4,000 people come to our fifth annual Ensenada Beerfest in March, which included 40 beer makers from northern Baja, mainland Mexico and Southern California.” When you’re ready to refuel, expatriates recommend the Belio and Ophelia restaurants, as well as the variety of ethnic street foods — from Armenian to Argentinian — available at the Callejón Colectivo Culinario and Región Gastronómico. And, since Ensenada was the birthplace of the fish taco, add that to your must-eat list while you’re in the city. The fish

couldn’t be any fresher; look no farther than the sprawling, energetic seafood market at the waterfront. If you’d like to explore farther afield, visit La Bufadora on the Punta Banda peninsula, approximately 20 miles south of Ensenada. This marine geyser is one of North America’s largest blowholes, and it’s been known to shoot seawater more than 100 feet into the air. Then there’s Ojos Negros in the San Rafael valley south of the city, where you can experience the region’s artisanal cheesemaking, and the Las Cañadas Campamento, which includes ziplines, canopy tours and a popular waterpark.

The Real Mexico Let’s face it, Mexico has a PR problem. Blaring headlines in the U.S. media have left the American populace feeling as if the entire country must be a veritable war zone, unsafe for travel unless you’re headed for a gated, high-security, all-inclusive resort in Los Cabos or Cancún. Yet if you speak with Mexicans and resident Americans in Baja California, they are frustrated and saddened by the portrayal the state, and the country, have received. “The idea that it’s so dangerous here, it’s a misconception,” says Fernando Pérez Castro, 37, proprietor of the upscale Hacienda La Lomita winery on Ensenada’s Ruta del Vino. “We have to fight traditional notions about Baja, and about Mexico being dangerous.” “It’s just constant,” says Edgar Sanchez Estrada, manager of the marina store at the Hotel Coral & Marina, just north of downtown

Ensenada’s busy commercial port. “Anything negative gets overhyped.” Marina Coral guest Wes Price nodded at this. Price, a powerboater from San Clemente, California, has been boating in Baja California for seven years, and he has cruised as far south as San Quintín. “I feel safer here than I do in many places at home,” he says. Retired U.S. Navy Commander Terry L. Sparks agreed. Sparks lives aboard his center-cockpit, sloop-rigged, Irwin 43 Mark III Sunnyside with his wife, Pat, at the Marina Coral. When asked if he feels safe traveling and cruising in Mexico, he said, “Look, if you’re out drinking in certain areas at 2 a.m., you’re probably going to have trouble. That’s true anywhere in the world, in any big cities like Washington D.C., Los Angeles, New York, or Chicago. The media is really beating up Mexico. It’s totally safe, and there are so many amazing places you can go.” Sparks did have one word of warning for boaters who are planning to drive, trailer-boat, or cruise in Mexico: Make sure your paperwork is up to date, and that you have all appropriate documentation on hand. If you don’t, you can’t blame Mexican law enforcement when you suffer the consequences. “You’re in a different country,” Sparks observes. “Follow the rules. For too long, it was a matter of, ‘I don’t have to, because they won’t check.’ We’re our own worst enemies. It’s not, ‘Oh, Mexico is picking on us again.’” Sparks and his wife have cruised the length of the Baja Peninsula. From La Paz, Baja California Sur, they explored the Sea of Cortez and Mexico’s Pacific coast; favorite spots included Puerto San Carlos and Mazatlán. In the end, however, they returned to Ensenada. “Ensenada was always No. 1,” Sparks says. “The weather is great here. It’s warmer than San Diego in winter and cooler in summer.” Hacienda La Lomita’s Castro is hopeful that the pleasant climate, the exploding Baja Med wineand-food scene, and the vibrant borderland culture will bring Americans to northern Baja in increasing numbers. “The bond between us and America needs to be redone,” he notes. “Each visit is a cultural exchange. When you come to Baja, you’ll find that it’s warm and friendly; it’s a nice place to visit, a place to fully experience life. And you’ll go home with many new friends.” — H.S.

City of festivals Ensenada also is a city of festivals. Some commemorate sporting events such as the world-renowned Baja 1000 off-road race, the Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race, and the Rosarito-Ensenada Bike Ride, while others revolve around the city’s exploding “Baja Med” scene. These include the Festival de las Conchas y el Vino Nuevo Ensenada in April, Ensenada de Todos festival in May, and the Fiestas de la Vendimia (Wine Harvest Festival) in August, which also includes a paella contest. Outdoor concerts in Ensenada and at the various wineries throughout the Valle de Guadalupe are major events on the region’s annual calendar as well, as is Carnaval. In Ensenada, this six-day wintertime celebration draws roughly 300,000 visitors. With the region’s pleasant Mediterranean-like climate, Ensenada will hold great appeal to visitors from northern climates throughout the winter and spring months. Shimomoto says he’d like to see more Americans make the trip. “Our winemakers are traveling all over the world for contests, and they’re winning awards,” he notes. “The word’s getting out.” “If you want adventure and new experiences, come to Baja,” Castro insists. “It’s something to savor. It’s a state of mind.” LB

he Great Lakes states are known for more than just sparkling freshwater, gorgeous harbors and heavenly beaches — they also take pride in their widely beloved sports teams with loyal fan bases, including the Lions, Tigers and Bears (oh, my!). What better way to watch the Lions’ big plays than while taking in beautiful waterfront views of Lake Charlevoix in this 4,740-square-foot home on the banks of Loeb Bay. The 4-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home lies on 143 stunning feet of water frontage. “It is a great property,” says realtor John Murray. “One, because of location being just one or 2 miles outside of downtown Charlevoix; and two, it’s right on a pure sand beach.” The home features granite counter tops, tiled floors, a four-car heated, attached garage, 40- by 80-foot pole barn to store all your toys, plus a bonus room. And talk about a bonus room — this addition is a “man cave” in its purest form, including a pool table, bar, surround sound stereo system, beer/wine cooler, large screen TVs, and even a juke box. “It’s the ultimate entertainment home, that’s for sure,”

Murray says. “Every Sunday, the current homeowner hosts huge sports events where he cooks steaks and has a big group over to watch games.” Originally built in 1996, the home is pristine. The current owners completed major additions and renovations, including adding the garage and bonus room in 2006 and remodeling the kitchen. Out front, the home is equipped with upper and lower decks overlooking spectacular views of the lake. The open floor plan features a large kitchen with six-burner stove that opens up to a seating room and dining room, as well as a spacious living room. The master bedroom is located on the ground floor, and the bonus area is situated above the attached garage. It all sits on 6.8 acres including a private beachfront — just minutes from downtown Charlevoix. “The home is great for boaters,” Murray says. “It’s right on Lake Charlevoix and close to Round Lake and Lake Michigan. It’s tucked right in the calm Loeb Bay, so it’s a perfect location for anyone that wants to waterski or kneeboard. You have all the activities you’d want in a waterfront home.” LB

above the waterline | by Dave Wallace
Beyond the Waterline Our longest-running columnist completes the final leg of his journey.
T
he whimsical dialogue that is “Above the Waterline” began in the early summer of 1993. From my viewpoint, it was an act of fate. For the previous 20 years, I had been writing a humor column for our local Grand Rapids Press Sunday magazine. For economic reasons, the Press suddenly canceled production of this publication, and it left me with no outlet for the work I’d been trained to do (and enjoyed doing) for so long. I felt creatively abandoned. During this same period, a friend of mine, who was in the marine accessories business, asked me to join him at the Chicago Boat Show. It was there that I met Lakeland publisher Bing O’Meara, who was cruising through the booths fishing for advertisers. When he asked me what I thought of the magazine, I told him it was well done, but seemed to take boating very seriously. When he inquired about how I’d remedy the situation, I suggested a humor column. He called my bluff and took me on. The first six issues had no heading or identity, other than the title of the topic. It was all text and no illustration. In retrospect, it looked rather drab. At that point, Bing and I agreed we needed a proper identity. After a fair amount of trial and error, with nothing special to show for it, I found myself reading an article about Bill Gore, creator of Gore-Tex. His management philosophy was based on the concept that once a company grew beyond 100 employees, it began to lose the creative potential of personal interaction. So he founded his company on the “campus” concept — a family of related, but independent companies, all with an employee count of 100 or less. He encouraged his employees to interact freely and to take ownership of new ideas for product improvement or efficiency. Gore illustrated the limitations of this new power in terms of all his employees being aboard a vessel he appropriately dubbed Gore-Tex, where everyone was equally free to make changes or improvements to their work. He equated this freedom with the ability to drill holes in the hull, if necessary. He said that employees could drill all the holes they needed in their work, as long as they stayed above the waterline. Below the waterline — where Gore worked and the economic decisions were made — would be off limits. As I read this, I saw Bing as publisher of the magazine, working below the waterline, with me as a contributor allowed the freedom to pick my own topics from above.
After 21 wonderful years, Dave Wallace is retiring his keyboard and cruising off into the sunset!
Dave Wallace has been boating in the Great Lakes for more than 35 years. He’s written for Lakeland Boating since 1993 and helped develop Lakeland Boating’s Ports o’ Call cruising guides.

After 5 years, I had pretty much found my groove, but wasn’t happy with the stark look of the text-heavy page. At the time, I was running an advertising agency in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and I had an artist on staff who also was a gifted cartoonist. Bing agreed to add him to the team, so for the next 7 years we included his colorful, eye-appealing illustrations to the column. When I finally lost my column partner and talented illustrator to lung cancer, I felt lost; but not for long. I met my current illustrator, Mike Harris, when we both worked for a continuing education program at our local college. I was teaching creative thinking, and he was teaching cartooning. When he came on board with illustrating the column, his off-the-wall imagination and free-wheeling technique took “Waterline” to a whole new level. Now, after all these years of sharing boating stories with you, I’ve finally reached a point of no return. Mike will follow me into the Editorial Haul-Out, feeling grateful for your positive reaction to our 21 years of cruising above the waterline, together. LB
