83 Million Strong... and Growing h ard for me to believe this is the final issue of Lakeland Boating we’re publishing in 2012. As we ready ourselves to bring you more great boating coverage and content in 2013, I reflect on the year that’s been and realize there’s good news to report: Boating is alive and well, and the number of people boating is on the rise! According to the latest statistics released by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), of the 238 million people living in the United States in 2011 (the most recent data available), nearly 35 percent, or 83 million people, participated in recreational boating. That’s the single greatest proportion of participation since 1997. It’s encouraging to know that despite the economic climate, people continue to get out on the water and enjoy their boats. That love of the water is no more apparent than it is in our Great Lakes. According to the same NMMA stats, the Great Lakes region is home to the greatest number of recreational boaters; approximately two out of 10 people, or 16 million boaters, live within the six Great Lakes states. And that’s not all. Three of the top 10 states for registered boats are in our region (Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin). This is an area where love of boats and boating trumps any economic bumps in the road… and lucky for us that trend seems to be gaining momentum. With winter now upon us, many Great Lakes boaters dream of warmer climes, where we can enjoy our boats year-round. I had the recent pleasure of taking a fabulous charter vacation to the British Virgin Islands with The Moorings, aboard a 39' power cat. The trip was phenomenal, the scenery beautiful and relaxing, and the people among the friendliest I’ve ever encountered. Read all about it on pages 41-51. I guarantee your next call or e-mail will be to The Moorings to book your own charter adventure. Not sure a tropical setting is for you? Then check out Amy

Pemberton’s piece on pages 40-41. In it she talks about how to plan the perfect charter vacation. Mark Corke likewise throws in his two cents on page 54, where he explains how to select a charter destination that’s right for you and what type of charter (crewed, bareboat or flotilla) best suits your needs. Please be sure and turn to page 6 to read Ruth Dailey’s grand-prize winning submission to Lakeland Boating’s “Cruising Destinations” contest. Her story is reprinted under the title “Love for Leland.” Ruth: Thank you for sharing your heart. I was touched by your words, and will not soon forget your story. Congratulations! Finally, since the sinking of the Christmas Tree Ship schooner Rouse Simmons 100 years ago, there have been many incarnations. But Captain Herman E. Schuenemann remains the most colorful of all. This November marks the anniversary of the winter gale that took down the Rouse Simmons in 1912. The holiday season is rapidly approaching. The weather is changing, and according to Lakeland friend and pilot/photographer Marge Beaver, the leaves have already turned in Michigan’s U.P. As this is our last issue until January 2013, all of us at Lakeland Boating wish all of you a warm, healthy and prosperous holiday season and New Year. r

Love for Leland Forty-plus years ago my husband, Carl, and I discovered Leland, Michigan. We had two little kids and a 16-foot wooden outboard boat on a trailer. We found the Glass House with two perfect adjoining rooms and a dock on Lake Leelanau where we could moor the boat. It was so perfect that we returned for many years. Our kids played with the Glass kids. They climbed the Whaleback, slept in the tree house, water-skied behind our boat, found Petoskey stones and fished from the dock. Every morning we took the boat into town to have breakfast at the Riverside and returned later for dinner at the Bluebird and ice cream from Harbor House. Then we walked the docks in the harbor and dreamed about how we would someday have a boat big enough to make the trip from our home in Holland, Michigan to Leland by way of Lake Michigan. Years passed, the kids grew up and the Glasses sold the hotel. With child rearing behind us, Carl and I finally moved up to a 22-foot boat with a cuddy cabin. The first time we made the run from Holland and pulled into Leland Harbor I was near tears at the fulfillment of our dream. We moved on to a bigger boat and took many cruises all around Lake Michigan; but the only mandatory port on each trip was Leland, where we felt as though we had come to our second home, and where Harbormaster Russell and his dock crew were our familiar neighbors. Carl passed away a little over five years ago. His final wish was for his ashes to go into Lake Michigan. On that first Father’s Day after his passing, the kids and I took him 3 miles offshore of Holland, but I knew how special Leland was to him so I saved some of his ashes. In July that year, with many friends around me, we left a little of Carl in Leland Harbor. I still have the boat, but because I now travel alone my cruises are shorter and I mostly visit Leland via M-22. It’s not the same, but it’s still the one place away from home that I have to visit at least once a year. Leland and Carl keep me coming back. —Ruth Dailey, Holland, MI

07/14 Ailing Man Rescued Saginaw Bay, MI USCG medevaced a man experiencing chest pains on an 18-foot recreational vessel in Saginaw Bay. The man’s name and hometown are not being released. A radio watchstander at USCG Station Saginaw River in Essexville was contacted at 11:30 by local emergency dispatch about a passenger aboard an 18-foot recreational boat who was experiencing symptoms of a heart attack in Saginaw Bay near Bay City, Michigan. A rescue boatcrew launched aboard a 41-foot Utility Boat (UTB), while a USCG Air Station Detroit rescue aircrew launched aboard an HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter. The rescue boatcrew arrived on scene and transferred the man and a family member aboard the UTB and began transporting them to Station Saginaw River, where EMS were waiting. On the way to the station the man’s heart stopped, and the rescue boatcrew immediately began administering first aid. Upon arriving at Station Saginaw River, the man was transferred to EMS in stable condition and transported along with the family member to Bay Medical Center in Bay City. His current condition is unknown. case closed
07/22 Three Boaters Rescued Geneva, OH A USCG boatcrew rescued three boaters after their boat became swamped in Lake Erie off the coast of Geneva State Park in Geneva, Ohio. The boaters’ names are not being released. Rescued were: A 61-year-old man; the man’s 34-year-old daughter; and the woman’s 6-year-old son. All three are reportedly from Willoughby, Ohio. The radio watchstander at USCG Station Ashtabula, Ohio was notified at 11:31 by a local 911 dispatcher, who reported a recreational boat taking on water about 1 nautical mile offshore of Geneva State Park. A rescue boatcrew immediately launched aboard a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement (SPC-LE) from Station Ashtabula. Once on scene, the SPC-LE crew found the three boaters in the water near the swamped vessel. All three were wearing life jackets. The SPC-LE crew transported the boaters to the park and transferred them to awaiting EMS in good condition. A commercial salvor was able to dewater the vessel and tow it to the park.
07/26 Man Stays on Stranded Boat Alpena, MI A USCG aircrew rescued three people from a vessel that began taking on water after running aground in Thunder Bay near Alpena, Michigan. The names of the individuals are not being released. A search-and-rescue controller at USCG sector Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan was contacted at 20:33 by boaters aboard a 22-foot pleasure craft who were en route back to shore after a fishing trip in Lake Huron. The four people reported they had been battling severe weather all afternoon and ran out of gas, so they requested assistance from USCG. Sector Sault Ste. Marie immediately began issuing a marine assistance radio broadcast. After several radio broadcasts went unanswered and weather conditions worsened, the boaters reported the boat was grounded and taking on water. A rescue boatcrew from USCG Station Alpena launched but soon found sea conditions were beyond the maximum operating parameters of the boat. In light of increasingly dangerous conditions, USCG directed an aircrew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter from USCG Air Station Traverse City to launch at 23:20 to assist the disabled vessel. The rescue aircrew arrived on scene at 24:21. Three of the four individuals were airlifted aboard the helicopter, while the owner/operator decided to stay onboard with his boat. Despite strong urging by USCG for the owner to leave the vessel, he declined. case closed r

After 5,137 nautical miles and nearly four months of traveling the circumnavigation of the Eastern U.S. commonly referred to as The Great Loop, Beneteau’s Swift Trawler 34 has returned to her home port of Annapolis, Maryland. “Beneteau is most grateful for the warm welcome received and the many marinas we visited, the dedication of The Greatest Loop’s 12 crews throughout her journey, and the unfailing loyalty of her many followers online,” says Maryline O’Shea, marketing director for Beneteau’s North American Powerboats Division. For years, yacht owners around the world have depended on the SEA-SHIELD line of detailing products to protect their vessels from harsh elements they face at sea. Now, those same products are available to consumers with boats of all shapes and sizes in and around the Great Lakes. “Our products are perfect for the conditions that boaters face on the Great Lakes,” says SEA-SHIELD founder Francisco Linares. “We originally created the SEA-SHIELD line to protect megayachts facing the harshest conditions out on the open ocean. You know if they can stand up to those extreme winds and constant UV and salt exposure, they will easily protect your boat here on the lakes.” The full line of products includes the SEA-SHIELD Polishing System, which restores the original finish on a weathered paint job, and the SEA-SHIELD Paint Protection System, which protects the finish of a newly-painted boat. For more information, visit sea-shield.com or call 800-673-8886.
The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) have initiated the first national database of vessel information. Similar to vehicle identification numbers (VIN), this new collection of boat manufacturing data can be used to assist in boat identification, helping to deter and prosecute crimes involving recreational boats. According to NICB, each month more than 500 vessels are stolen in the U.S., costing boat owners and their insurers millions of dollars annually. In turn, boat thieves often sell these stolen vessels to unsuspecting consumers for a large profit. This database will enhance the efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard, law enforcement personnel and the NICB to prevent, detect and report potential marine thefts and insurance fraud and at the same time protect boaters. Encourage the manufacturer of your boat to contribute boat model information for your particular vessel by e-mailing boats@nicb.org. 10 LAKELANDBOATING.COM november/december 2012

Fred Cotey, an icon in the marine industry who helped
develop changes in pontoon design, performance, safety standards and engineering, has died.
“Fred’s vision and work within the industry will be greatly missed, but the standards he set will carry on to future generations of boaters,” says Bob Menne, president of Premier Marine in Wyoming, Minnesota, one of the country’s leading pontoon manufacturers. “He was a true ambassador of boating.” Cotey began his career with Luger Boats, where he designed and developed fiberglass boat kits. He then worked as a production manager for HydroStream, developing and building high-speed performance boats. He spent eight years with Forester Boats before moving to Premier Marine in 1992. At Premier, Cotey spearheaded development of the PTX performance package to accommodate the power and size of sterndrive engines on pontoons. In 1994 Premier introduced the PTX package to the market, setting the standard for performance, handling and ride across the industry. For more information, visit pontoons.com or call 651-462-2880.

MOLLY “She’s the only dog I know who has hobbies!” says a fellow boater about our beloved Springer Spaniel, Molly. Her affinity for water started young, when she would sneak over to a neighbor’s pond for a swim on a hot day. It was only natural for her to join us on our boating adventures. An inflatable canoe, a.k.a. “Molly’s Boat,” is tied beside our 378 Four Winns — a handy place for her to watch fish or take a nap. It’s even better if she can convince someone to get the paddles and take her for a ride. Pick up a fishing pole and she’s right at your side, letting you know with a howl when you have a bite. We throw the small ones in a bucket full of water, and she’ll repeatedly thrust her head underwater until she catches one in a move we call “bobbing for bluegill.” Once caught, the fish is proudly paraded up and down the dock for a few minutes until it’s tossed back unharmed. But her favorite hobby is swimming. Drop the boat anchor and she’ll wait impatiently on the swim platform. As soon as the swim ladder hits the water, so does she. With a slow, relaxed dog paddle Molly will spend hours in the water, coming out only rarely to rest. And the best part? She taught herself to climb the swim ladder! We get a lot of surprised looks when people see her climb back aboard by herself. Molly also loves to bodysurf off the beach. Exceptionally social, our Molly quickly makes friends of both the two- and fourlegged variety, so she’s the perfect dog to cruise ports or sit at the dock. Along with her companion, Brynn, they truly are our 2nd Mates (the name of our boat). —Tammy Cohee Simrad Yachting, a world-leader in the design

scuttlebutt Bird droppings can be a boater’s worst nightmare. Excrement can stain surfaces and eventually erode fabric material, costing hundreds if not thousands of dollars in cleaning and replacement costs. Deck-Guard LLC solves this common problem in an environmentally friendly and humane way with the introduction of its Ultrasonic Bird Repeller. The device emits a pet-friendly sound that manages to offend the birds and prevent them from perching. The sound covers an area of 30 feet, making the device ideal for your boat, waterfront home or backyard deck. scuttlebutt The recent seizure of two boats and a personal watercraft belonging to American citizens from the waters of Lake Ontario has U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) calling for clearer rules from the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) on what the organization expects from American boaters in Canadian portions of the lake. According to an article published August 22, 2012 in Government Security News (gsnmagazine.com), Senator Schumer urged CBSA to look into the incident, in which the boats were confiscated at Ontario’s Port Dahlousie. The boats’ owners, Niagara County, New York residents Randy Hook and Gerald Daniel, “were forced to pay $3,000 in fines after attempting to lawfully report their presence” in Canadian waters, Schumer reportedly wrote in a letter to Canadian officials. According to the article, Schumer told officials he wants clearer guidance in terms of the reporting obligations American boaters have in foreign waters. “CBSA must more clearly communicate the duties and expectations of Americans boating near the border, and to provide clear warnings in incidents with first-time offenders in those situations,” Schumer reportedly wrote.

scuttlebutt name game
BY DESIGN My boat’s name has a double meaning: (1) I’m an architect; and (2) Prior to my divorce, the wife had zero interest in a boat, insisting that if I bought a boat she would get the house. We got divorced, then I bought the boat — hence, by design. —Steven S. Sider, Highland Park, IL
CONCUBINE My wife, Laurie, a religious person, named our Bayliner Cierra 2885 after reading the definition of “concubine” in the Bible: A woman held in high esteem of a man, but not his wife. Now, why would she think of that? —Bill Hominick, Park Ridge, IL
FIXIN TO II I grew up in southwest Oklahoma, and although I moved away more than 20 years ago, I never got rid of that southwestern vernacular term “fixin to” when I talk. My wife says I’m always “fixin to” do something, so we decided that was the perfect name for our first express cruiser and continued with our second boat by naming it Fixin To II. We currently keep the boat on Lake Michigan at Reefpoint Marina in Racine, Wisconsin. —Ken & Catherine Thomson, West Dundee, IL

New for the New Year
A sneak peek at the latest electronics for 2013. by rog e r m afe e c
RaymaRine a and e Series multifunction Displays Raymarine, one of the world’s largest marine electronics dealers, has produced its award-winning e Series multifunction display in a new 15.4" wide format. With this new offering, the e Series is now available in four display sizes: 7", 9", 12" and the new 15.4". Raymarine recognizes helm stations are running out of space, so the latest — and largest— e Series design occupies the same footprint as a traditional 14" screen. The new 15.4" display actually replaces the previous 14" model. This display comes on the heels of Raymarine’s new, smaller a Series displays, released in October 2012. The a Series is smaller than the smallest e Series: 5.7" diagonally rather than the comparative 7" version of the smallest e Series. These smaller displays are targeted at smaller boats, where helm size is at a minimum. Two new models in the a Series — the a65 and a67 — are powered by Raymarine’s LightHouse User Interface, which includes Swipe, Touch and Navigate features. A dual core processor brings up graphics clearly and quickly,
and the bonded display provides bright colors and good graphics. A 50-channel, built-in GPS allows quick access to the included Navionics Silver Chart package. The unit also displays the Navionics Gold Chart package, as well as 3D and aerial views. The a67 adds a built-in dual frequency digital sonar capable of reaching down to 3,000 feet (depending on water conditions) and an optional wide beam transom transducer. With addition of the new e165 Raymarine has covered the market, providing displays for boats from trailerables all the way up to megayachts. All units will display output of FLIR night vision cameras. (FLIR is Raymarine’s parent company.) MSRP on the a and e Series Multifunction Displays range from less than $1,000 to $6,250. raymarine . com

Si-Tex maRine eleCTROniCS Thrane & Thrane VHfs Another high-end DSC VHF radio has just become available in the North American marine market. SI-TEX Marine Electronics of Riverhead, New York has taken on the Thrane & Thrane line of high-performance SAILOR 6216 VHF DSC Class D radios. Thrane & Thrane set up in Denmark in the early 1980s and now has offices in Norway, Sweden, China and Singapore, as well as the U.S. The unit, which is sold in commercial and recreational markets, has a built-in loud hailer with talk-back fog horn features. It’s IPX8 and IPX6 water-rated and has a three-year limited warranty. Retail price is $695. si - tex . com
Teleflex maRine Optimus 360 Joystick Control System Joystick controls have become commonplace on many new power installations, particularly on boats with pod drives. Joystick control units have also made their way into sterndrive systems, and onto boats equipped with just a single engine and thrusters. Until recently, however, there have been no joystick controls for twin outboards. Teleflex Marine has stepped into the market, filling the void with a joystick control system that can be retrofitted to mechanically-controlled twin outboards. The engines are not linked
together as they would be in a traditional dual installation, but rather are independently hung and controlled by a built-in computer. I tested the new system in Vancouver, and low and behold the boat can move sideways, spin in a circle, and move diagonally in any direction… depending on control inputs. This new unit will give boaters a chance to upgrade to a modern control technology without having to repower. optimus - 360 . com

Gas Master
Properly inspect and maintain your onboard LPG system. by capt . fran k lan i e r
T
here’s nothing more satisfying than following up a long day on the water with a good meal, be it burgers on the grill or a culinary extravaganza whipped up by the galley wizard. Most marine stoves and grills use LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). LPG is efficient, relatively cheap and widely available; it’s also highly explosive, which makes regular inspections and tests of the system so critical. The goal of any LPG system inspection is to prevent gas leaks — and being ushered into eternity via a fiery explosion of biblical proportions. In this article, we’ll cover basic LPG system installation requirements and inspections; however, always seek professional advice from a certified installer if you’re unsure about any aspect of inspecting or maintaining your LPG system.
Inspection Tips n Check your LPG system weekly for leaks. n Installation of a marine-grade LPG “sniffer” or fume detector is a highly recommended upgrade. If you have one installed, ensure the gas sensor is mounted as low as possible and near the range (where leaking gas is likely to accumulate) and that you test sensor operation on a regular basis. n After cooking, leave one burner ignited and turn off the solenoid or tank valve. When the burner goes out, close the burner valve. This empties the line of gas and prevents leaking should a burner valve fail to seal. n Close the tank valve in addition to the solenoid valve if the system is not in use, particularly if you plan on leaving the vessel for an extended period of time. The solenoid should always be closed when the system is not in use.
Fuel cylinders and storage All LPG cylinders must meet DOT (Department of Transportation) or ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) requirements. Look for a stamp from one of these organizations near the valve. Tanks can be mounted on deck or in a dedicated storage locker; however, in all cases tanks must be properly secured and mounted upright unless specifically designed to be mounted horizontally. Cylinders mounted on deck must be located in a well ventilated area (where leaking gas will flow directly overboard), be readily accessible, and be protected against weather and/or mechanical damage. As per the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC), dedicated LPG storage lockers must be vapor tight to the vessel’s interior, located above the waterline, and be constructed of (or lined with) corrosion resistant materials. Check your locker has a gasketed cover that latches tightly, opens only from the top, and can be quickly opened without tools (so you can easily access the tank shut-off valve during an emergency). LPG lockers must open directly to the outside atmosphere, although they can be located inside a cockpit locker if mounted high enough so that the LPG locker lid can’t be opened without opening the cockpit locker first. LPG lockers must also have a dedicated drain (½-inch minimum) at its bottom that vents directly overboard. A dedicated locker means just that — remove all non-LPG system items from your LPG locker (shackles, cleaning supplies, tools, etc.), as they could damage system components. Next check the locker bottom, sides and seams for damage (corrosion, cracks, holes, etc.) that could allow gas leaks into the vessel interior. Ensure the locker vent hose slopes downward and is
Left: This system fails to meet many of the recommendations regarding LPG system installations, such as an unsecured cylinder, no shut-off valve operable from the vicinity of the LPG appliance, and no pressure gauge to conduct leak tests. Right: One ABYC requirement is that all LPG storage lockers be dedicated (i.e. nothing else can be stored inside) to prevent possible damage to system components. 16 LAKELANDBOATING.COM november/december 2012

free of blockages, loops and kinks. The vent discharge outlet must be located below the locker, exit the hull above static waterline, and be at least 20 inches away from any other openings (air intakes, sink or bilge pump discharge hoses, engine exhausts, etc.) that could allow gas to reenter the hull.
Shut-off valves Every LPG system is required to have a readily accessible manual or electrically operated (e.g. solenoid) shut-off valve installed in either the low- or high-pressure line at the cylinder. Solenoid remote controls must be installed near the appliance they serve and be operated without reaching over the top of any open flames (such as stove burners).
Fuel lines Although copper is used throughout the world in LPG installations, flexible LPG hose is probably safer for marine use. Inspect lines for cracks, brittleness, kinks and chafing, ensuring each are protected by grommets at each bulkhead, partition or deck penetration. For copper lines, verify all fittings are long nut flare fittings; short nut fittings (such as those used in refrigeration systems) are less reliable and prone to failure due to vibration. For flexible hose, check the outer jacket for markings that indicate compliance with Underwriters Laboratory UL21 LP Gas Hose. All end fittings must be permanent types, such as a swaged sleeve or sleeve and threaded insert; hose clamp fittings are a big no-no. Finally, each appliance (galley stove, cockpit grill, etc.) needs its own dedicated supply line — one originating from inside the propane locker or tank enclosure at the solenoid valve. Verify this supply line is a continuous run with no breaks, connections, or “T”s (in order to reduce the possibility of leaks).
Pressure regulators and gauges Every LPG system needs a pressure regulator designed for use with LPG. For deck mounted cylinders, verify the regulator’s relief valve outlet discharges overboard
Thrill of the Grill Because grills are located above decks, boaters tend to treat them with a more cavalier attitude when it comes to safety. Bad idea. According to the Insurance Information Institute, barbeques result in more than 2,000 fires, 300-plus grill-related injuries, and at least three deaths annually. Here are some tips on how to avoid becoming a barbeque statistic. n Make sure your grill is mounted solidly and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid using camp-type grills or the like, which typically have no means for proper mounting on a boat. n Burner controls should be two-stage operation when going from “off” to “on” (to prevent accidental opening of the valve during handling or storage) and should be located at the front of the grill, so you can operate them without reaching over the burner. n If your grill uses portable cylinders, they must be DOT-approved 2P/2Q 8-ounce units with rim vent release. Never use portable cylinders larger than 8 ounces and store them on the exterior of the vessel (so any leaking gas can flow overboard).
at least 20 inches from any opening (just like a locker discharge). A pressure gauge is also required and must be installed on the cylinder side of the pressure regulator. This gauge allows you to quickly and easily check for leaks. To test the system, turn on the stove or grill and then close all the burner valves, leaving the solenoid switch on. Note the pressure gauge reading, then close the tank valve; the gauge reading should remain constant for at least three minutes. If the pressure drops, then you have a leak (or leaks) that must be corrected before system use. Use leak detection fluid or a detergent solution to locate leaks. You’ll typically find them at fittings and connections, although they can occur anywhere in the system due to chafe or physical damage to supply lines or other system components. Don’t use solutions containing ammonia (it attacks brass fittings) and never use a flame to check for leaks. r
Left: LPG cylinder storage lockers ventilation can’t be connected with other piping. Here, a siphon vent for the engine exhaust has been “T’d” into the LPG storage locker vent hose. Right: LPG system hoses should always be routed and secured to prevent chafe. 17 LAKELANDBOATING.COM november/december 2012

he newly-launched Barracuda 9 from Beneteau is 29 feet of adaptability designed to satisfy the needs of fishermen, divers and recreational boaters who value versatility and durability. The mission statement behind the design of the Barracuda 9 was to create a boat that could not only provide protection and safety for late season anglers, but also double as a very capable couple’s weekend cruiser. “The inspiration for the Barracuda was to build a fishing/cruising crossover that could easily be customized based on its intended use while providing more protection than ever; we believe that is the real appeal of the range,” says Laurent Fabre, vice president of sales and marketing for Beneteau Powerboats Division. “Whether you’re a recreational fisherman or want a boat you can enjoy on weekends with your family, the Barracuda is your boat.” Modular design allows recreational boaters and fishing enthusiasts to customize the Barracuda 9 to suit their needs, style and budget. The Barracuda 9 can be equipped with twin outboard engines (225 hp apiece) or a single outboard up to 400 hp and is available with or without a flybridge. Options include a Fischer Panda DC 4Kva generator, Cruisair 12,000 BTU A/C, cockpit Bimini, bow sun awning and forward hammock-style sunpad. Beneteau’s patented AirStep® hull design allows the Barracuda 9 to deliver reduced fuel consumption and quicker acceleration while providing greater control and enhanced maneuverability. High side rails and increased freeboard ensure safety even in rough conditions, while the enclosed wheelhouse

provides a welcome haven from the elements. Providing 6'6" of headroom, the wheelhouse features a one-piece translucent glass windscreen, large windows to the sides and rear (for increased visibility), and a sunroof. The port and starboard sliding access doors provide both easy access and improved cross ventilation. Helm layout is on the starboard side and includes a gray-tinted instrument panel (for gauges and electronics), compass, six function 12V electrical panel, and fuel gauge indicator. Both pilot and co-pilot seats are upholstered with padded PVC silver and include swivel and bolster functions and footrests. The flybridge version features a second steering station with co-pilot seat, electric trim tabs and space for additional electronics (a radar mount is also included). Down below, the cabin is equipped with a head that includes a sink, hot and cold water, shower, and of course a marine toilet with a 21-gallon holding tank. “Beneteau is already launching the Barracuda 7 in Europe this fall, and it’s our intention to bring her to the North American market where enclosed center-console boats are starting to gain much traction,” adds Fabre. “She’s the perfect entry-level boat to satisfy many needs, much like her big sister.” r

t is remarkable that venerable Boston Whaler, a virtual institution, continues to surprise with innovative models. They continuously build on Whaler’s legendary unsinkable hull and its solid reputation for turning out some of the most capable and durable tenders and recreational fishing boats for 54 years. Boston Whaler is now venturing into uncharted waters with a new line of Vantage dual console boats. The all-new Boston Whaler 230 Vantage is the first model in what is to become a dual console series. The line will be a more all-around recreational boat without sacrificing the fishability normally associated with Whalers. With its familiar bow you won’t mistake it for any other brand. However, unlike other Whaler models, the Vantage has an open bow with a runabout-style wraparound windshield and a walk-through. It’s designed with a high freeboard that affords a deep cockpit, providing greater protection and comfort. The open bow is larger than a normal bowrider of similar size. Unlike inboard/outboard (I/O) boats, hanging the engine outside the cockpit area allowed Whaler to place the dual consoles slightly further back to make extra room up front, yet still provide a spacious cockpit. The helm is at the starboard console with an upgraded operator’s seat. The port console hides the lockable head that includes a molded-in sink. Port-side seating is comprised of a unique convertible lounge seat that can lay flat for an aft-facing lounger. The forward section of the bench can be raised to form the back of an aftfacing lounge seat or positioned more upright as an
aft-facing bench seat. It can be further adjusted to a forward-facing bench. Behind the helm seat on the starboard side is a refreshment center with a sink and cutting surface. Below is a place for the 36-quart cooler. There’s plenty of storage available throughout the boat. The aft bench folds away nicely when the cockpit is needed to fight fish. The bench also has a back rest that raises up when the bench is deployed, making it a very comfortable place to sit for the long ride in from offshore fishing. The starboard side transom door leads to the swim platform. There are too many options to mention in this small space. However, there are two tower options: One strictly for tow sports with available racks and speakers; and one for all-around sporting with four rod holders and a tow pylon/single light on top. Another notable option is a bow ladder for beaching. For serious fishing and sporting families, the Vantage offers a fishing package with a 14-gallon livewell, fishing station and two extra transom-mounted rod holders. The uniquely ingenious 230 Vantage and the new Vantage line are sure to bring a new breed of devotees to the Boston Whaler family. r

CABO 40 Hardtop Express Improving on perfection. by capt . fran k lan i e r
H
ow do you make the perfect CABO express? Easy; take the best attributes of the express fleet and combine them into one model. That’s exactly what CABO has done with the new 40 Hardtop Express. This newest CABO’s foundation is the very successful 40 platform. Powered by CMD Zeus pod drives, it’s a definitive blue-water hull design that provides the strength, efficiency and maneuverability needed to make the new 40 HTX one of the most nimble, quick and reliable express boats on the market. The capstone of the 40 HTX is inclusion of an integrated hardtop. Introduced this past year with the debut of the 44 HTX, this feature has proven popular with both anglers and cruisers alike. The integrated hardtop eliminates the need for aftermarket hardtops, vinyl windows, zippers and flaps while vastly improving protection and visibility from the helm. Now your time on the water can be spent fighting fish, not the elements. The 40 Hardtop Express is a full-on fishing machine. The helm deck and cockpit total more than 200 square feet and have been designed with maximum offshore angling pursuits in mind. With an overabundance of tackle drawers on the helm deck, searching for places to store tackle is a thing of the past. Mezzanine-style seating provides a comfortable perch while watching the spread. Wide, padded gunnels allow angle-mounted rod holders and provide full foot room underneath. And when the day is done and all the trophy fish are aboard, two huge fishboxes located flush in the sole provide plenty of storage. When it comes to performance, the CABO 40 HTX may be the best-running 40-foot sportfisher on the market today. According to independent, third-party

tests she can reach 36 knots when powered by a pair of 715-hp Caterpillar C12 ACERT diesel engines. When powered by CMD Zeus pod drives, the 40 HTX is one of the nimblest sportfishers on the market. The attention to detail and craftsmanship found inside mirrors that found in CABO’s latest generation of sportfisher. The layout is efficient, yet offers both comfort and aesthetic appeal. Handcrafted woodwork throughout the 40 HTX is on par with that of a fine custom yacht. The cabin showcases comfort, spaciousness and refined elegance that belie the boat’s hard-core exterior. A starboard settee seats six and converts to upper and lower bunks when it’s time to recharge overnight. The master stateroom forward features a large island double berth with ample drawer and locker space. The galley is fully equipped for fine cuisine, or just for feeding a hungry crew. A cedar-lined hanging closet provides additional stowage and, because CABO is all about fishing, lockers located to port and starboard can hold up to 10 rods. An optional layout featuring a second stateroom on the starboard side is available for extra privacy when hosting larger crews. Without a doubt, the CABO 40 HTX is more than the sum of its parts and will please both fisherman and cruiser alike. r

our Winns began more than five decades ago in 1962 as the Safe-T-Mate Boat Company. In the mid-1970s the Winn family purchased the manufacturer and renamed it Four Winns, after the father and three sons who would run the business. Over the years Four Winns has been under new ownership or management several times. Surprisingly, the company has remained in its original hometown of Cadillac, Michigan for more than 40 years and maintains a solid reputation for building quality boats. Horizon bowrider models were first introduced in 1984. The new H260 is a part of the latest generation of Horizons, characterized by high freeboard and custom curved windshields that are designed to emphasize automotive styling cues. The new Four Winns has a lowered swim platform and the addition of an extra-long boarding ladder to make entering from the water easier. An optional hinged sport arch completes the look. Entering the cockpit is simple with an aft transom easy-lift entry system on the starboard side of the large sun pad. The interior of the H260 is all about comfort. Seating is deep and plentiful with an L-shaped bench, comprised of an aft- and port-side lounge. Two bucket seats with bolsters make up the helm and companion seating. Additional bench seating is to starboard behind
the helm seat, or an optional refreshment center with sink and refrigerator is available. Ample storage is cleverly hidden underneath the sun pad and bench seats and in the exceptionally deep ski locker. A large head with vanity and sink is nicely concealed under the port-side console. Both consoles feature hand-stitched upholstered dashboard eyebrows. Instrumentation is set in bezels mounted on a carbon fiber-like surface. The throttle and shift binnacle is well positioned for effortless operation. Four Winns put a lot of thought into the open bow area. The forward-facing twin lounge seats are contoured and have backrests that can raise up to double as head rests. The pop-up arm rests and high sides give a secure feeling when the boat is operating at speed. When resting, the bow area converts to a large sun pad with a backrest that fits into the walk through. All the way forward is a large anchor locker. It’s designed to allow room for the optional bow roller and windlass anchoring system. The Horizon 260, with its innovations and style, is a boat that will help Four Winns regain its momentum as an industry leader in the bowrider market. r

MCY Gemini Series A luxurious twin-hulled sport yacht. by mar k ke llu m
T
he Gemini SuperSport line is named for the Gemini Constellation, the twins Castor and Pollux of Greek mythology. The new Meilahn Custom Yachts (MCY) line is therefore appropriately named, donning twin hulls. At first glance the MCY Gemini 60 does not look like a typical power catamaran, having lines more akin to a European sport yacht. “We designed the Gemini 60 to have a sculptured look,” says David Meilahn, CEO and co-designer of the boat. “Our goal was to provide uninterrupted living space below decks while possessing the look of a true sport yacht, unlike your typical power cat that resembles a sailing cat with its mast removed.” Stepping up the sensuously curved stairway from the aft cockpit to the oval-shaped sun lounge deck, seating wraps around the cockpit from the port side to the starboard side, and finishes with an aft bench on the sun lounge. The sun lounge doubles as a spacious hot tub hidden beneath the pads. Other hidden features include a galley area with a built-in grill, sink, Sub-Zero two-drawer refrigerator/freezer, and Cambria quartz counters built into the gunwhale. A flat panel television pops up from behind the aft-facing bench, and hidden behind the helm is a sink, refrigerator and storage drawers. A seductively shaped hardtop and electronics arch cover
the helm deck. The hardtop has twin opening sunroofs that keep the helm deck bright. The helm is well laid out and has dual fully adjustable helm seats to starboard. To port is a settee that surrounds a quartz table. Below deck benefits from the unique styling of the Gemini 60’s exterior. Descending the wide stairway to the main salon you’re surrounded by more seductive curves with cabinets and walls of exotic anigre wood harvested from African rain forests. The salon and open galley fill the entire 19'3" width, making the below deck entertainment area exceptionally spacious. The well-appointed port-side galley is sufficient to provide any type of meal — from casual to elegant. The owners and VIP staterooms continue the anigre joinery with accent walls and hanging lockers, bureaus and built-in night stands providing ample storage. The queen-size pedestal beds are positioned facing the entertainment center in each of the spaces. The owners’ stateroom has its own private head. A convenient gangway leads from the VIP stateroom to the guest head. The exceptional performance of the Gemini 60 comes from the dual 900-hp Yanmar diesels coupled with Twin Disc Quickshift transmissions with e-troll and Arneson ASD 12 surface drives. More than sufficient power is derived from a Northern Lights 20kW generator. The Gemini 60 is custom built, and MCY will build-out to an owner’s specifications of electronics, entertainment systems, woods, countertops, flooring, and exterior colors. MCY will custom build express cruiser, motoryacht and sportfish lines based on the Gemini twin hull baseline. r

Ranger R-31 Several “firsts” aboard this trailerable trawler. by rog e r m c afe e

T
he new Ranger R-31 comes complete with a number of firsts. It is the first Ranger to have a command bridge, and that bridge is collapsible, making it the first vessel in its market segment to be so equipped. The ability to reduce overall height of the vessel by collapsing the command bridge is useful when towing the boat over a highway system or clearing bridges. Rangers were the first vessels designed from scratch to be towed… and the first to list a trailer as optional equipment. With the new R-31, Ranger has also addressed one of the main problems associated with cockpits of smaller trawlers when they are at anchor or at the dock: There’s really not enough “socializing” room. With just a couple of people on the traditional cockpit seating, simply moving around in (or through) the cockpit is a challenge for anyone else on board. Ranger has developed what it calls “gull wing” seating, a feature that, until now, has not been seen on vessels this small. These flip seats, located to port and starboard, deploy quickly and easily when in place, hanging out and over the sides of the hull. This arrangement, combined with a comfortable transom seat, allows six people to lounge in comfort with plenty of cockpit sole space for others to move through the cockpit. It also allows space for a small table. On the foredeck Ranger has installed another feature that, until now, has been reserved for much larger vessels: A stowable double seat and table. Ranger has, with its new R-31, successfully and dramatically increased outside entertaining space with
a series of simple, elegant and inexpensive design firsts in a vessel of this size. Four overhead hatches and plenty of window glass flood the boat’s interior with plenty of natural light and keep things bright and cheery on a dull, gray day. With the hatches cracked open the vessel ventilates well, even while cooking. The new 31-footer does “boat things” well, too. It responds smartly to the helm, tracks well, and corners at speed like an Olympic gold medal slalom skier. It tops out at about 24 mph at WOT and is even quieter inside than earlier Rangers. This is because the extra length allows the engine to be contained completely under the cockpit sole, rather than having to protrude into the space under the salon as necessitated by shorter vessels. The vessel ghosts along at just more than 6 mph (a good speed, if one is used to sailboats), and burns only 1.1 gallons of diesel per hour. This is excellent mileage for a 31-footer. It has two staterooms, two heads, a great galley and plenty of storage. The R-31 is comfortable and quiet throughout it’s speed range and should be on the “must see” list of anyone looking for a trailerable trawler. r

iara Yachts’ 5800 Sovran shares a similar countenance along with a superior reputation for quality that the entire Sovran line emotes. From the 3500 Sovran to the flagship 5800, each displays a family resemblance that is unmistakable; the uninterrupted sheer line, stately hardtop, windshield that wraps to the side windows, and large, sociable cockpits. The 5800 Sovran is a study in power and grace. The easy handling of the 5800 Sovran belies its power when confronting challenging blue-water conditions. Its strength comes from triple Volvo Penta 600 IPS drives. Its poise ensues from the hull design, with a sharp bow entry tapering to a 14.5-degree deadrise. Grace is a result of the fine slow-speed maneuvering afforded by Volvo joystick control. Stepping onto the boat via the swim platform you’ll find a large transom locker that provides easy access to fenders and lines. The cockpit features a molded-in aft lounge that wraps around to the port side enveloping a high-gloss table on a hi-lo mount. There is a starboardside wet bar and aft-side storage that can be fitted with optional refrigerator or icemaker. Through sliding double doors is the upper salon. The salon offers a wide-open view in an air conditioned environment. The flat panel LCD TV rises from a credenza that also houses the DVD and stereo system, making the space ideal for watching the game or entertaining friends. When open, the 6-foot-wide sunroof brightens up the salon. Throughout the interior is a remarkable abundance of handcrafted wood cabinets and hardwood flooring. The well arranged helm is no exception. Dual fully adjustable Stidd captain’s chairs provide comfort even on a long day of operation.
A strategically placed port-side galley serves guests in the upper salon or at the lower salon’s dinette. The guest stateroom has a centerline queen-size berth with private entry to the day head. Ample storage is tucked beneath the bed, in the cedar-lined hanging locker and upper hull-side lockers. A flat screen TV, DVD player and stereo provide entertainment. The owner’s stateroom is a full-beam, fully carpeted mid cabin. The private head and linen closet are housed in a foyer at the entrance. The berth is an oversize centerline queen. Large hull-side windows deliver plenty of light. Port and starboard drawers and a hanging locker provide ample storage. “The 5800 makes for a great family cruising boat, even for extended periods of time,” says Justin Bassett, Marketing Director/Sales for Walstrom Marine, which has locations in Harbor Springs, Bay Harbor and Cheboygan, Michigan. “The huge amount of interior storage combined with the large trunk and cavernous lazerrette allowed our family of five to cruise the North Channel for a week with many of those nights on the hook and lots of extra ground tackle, water toys, grill and fishing gear.” Long known as a quality builder of luxury yachts, Tiara’s 5800 Sovran is a crowning achievement of the company’s fleet. r 25 LAKELANDBOATING.COM november/december 2012

t’s easy to see why the World Cat 290DC is one of the most popular boats in the 29-foot range. The big catamaran ride and dual console design make it both family- and fisherman-friendly. The 290DC is designed to meet the expectations of the most experienced boaters while providing the all-weather reliability and smooth ride World Cat is famous for. Built on the same Vectorflo air-cushion system common to all World Cat boats, the 290DC features added buoyancy at the bow to give it more lift and to better accommodate the additional weight of the dual console. Big dual consoles are increasing in popularity, and as catamarans place the deepest parts of their hulls outboard, the 290DC reaps many design benefits, such as a walk-in, stand-up head on the port side complete with electric marine toilet and fresh water sink. “Cats also carry their beams all the way to the bow, so the 290DC offers comfortable seating for six adults in the huge bow seating area,” says Andy Brown, president of the PowerCat Group. Seating improvements are a big part of the new upgrades World Cat made to its popular 290DC model, improving comfort and increasing capacity to 10 people. The twin captain’s chairs were exchanged for twin bench seats with flip-up bolsters, and the forward bow seating provides better lounging. Adding optional
flush-mounted seats in the transom and gunnel allow you to enjoy lounging in the cockpit as well. The 290DC may be the perfect family cruiser, but when the fish are biting the self-bailing aft cockpit is packed with the fishing goodies anglers expect. There’s more than 400 quarts of insulated storage aboard, as well as a 30-gallon livewell/cooler. The gunwales have bulk and tackle storage built in, and the standard hardtop sports six rocket launcher rod holders to match the six holders in the gunwales. A walk-though transom door and a standard sturdy aluminum dive ladder make landing fish or retrieving swimmers a breeze. While the dual console design of the 290DC draws the crowd, it’s the ride and handling in rough conditions that wows them. When the weather pipes up there’s plenty of protection behind the windshield, which closes shut with a wind door, effectively sealing the cockpit area. Full custom curtain enclosures are also available for the colder months. Once safely back at the dock, maneuvering into the slip is a breeze, as the engines (mounted on 58" centers) handle like an inboard in close quarters. r

ruisers Yachts introduced the new 2013 45 Cantius this summer. She is the sister yacht to both the 41 Cantius and 48 Cantius and is the third yacht in the popular Cantius series, which was originally launched in 2010. Jon Viestenz, Cruisers product manager, and I met up at the Cruisers Yachts headquarters in Oconto, Wisconsin and headed down to the marina to do a walk-through and put the new boat through her paces.
Room to enteRtain We approached the 45 from her stern and boarded the enormous swim platform, which measures 93" by 74." A bar attached to the transom has two removable bar stools. Simply lift the bar’s top and a mini garage appears. This nifty storage area is designed to house cleaning supplies, fenders, tables and deck chairs, etc. A port-side module alongside the bar contains the 50-amp cord as well as the water fill. On the starboard side of the bar is a pass-through that brings you into the cockpit. There’s an option of either real or synthetic teak for the entertainment platform as well as the cockpit. Entering the cockpit area/salon to port is a huge L-shaped settee to starboard, and forward are two steps up to the walk-around. In front of the transom seat are removable tables. Forward of the settee and tables are two modules. The starboard module houses the grill and refrigerator; to port
is an ice chest and sink. The standard transom sun lounge must be magic, as it breaks down to a port-side settee and transom bench that reconfigure into a luxurious sun lounge.
BRing the outdooRs in At around noon, we stood on the aft deck, sun directly overhead, and it was about 90 degrees outside. I was uncomfortably hot when Jon hit a button and the sun shade directly over the aft cockpit deployed and saved the day. This option is an absolute must in my book. The second salon/galley is accessed from the cockpit through a swinging stainless steel cabin door, which, when opened along with the window-port of the door, allows the whole boat to open up, creating a seamless flow into the salon/galley. In the galley you’ll find a convection microwave, refrigerator, electric stove and abundant overhead storage. Guests can move around the boat freely, and it appears much larger than it actually is. Should the weather turn hot and humid, close the glass and turn on the A/C. The oversized 13kW generator will more than handle the job. If the weather is perfect, open it up and you have a party platform. Enter the third salon, where attractive cabinetry and sparkling floors are comprised of wenge wood. An elegant dining area is to port, complete with a U-shaped table and supple leather seating. The 32" flat screen TV in the salon can be pulled out and is visible from the
cockpit. At the push of a button, the retractable sunroof allows boaters to open up the boat and enjoy the sun or stars. The helm is well designed and stylish. There’s plenty of room for the electronics of choice, a great looking wheel and a white leather helm seat with 360-degree visibility. There are two staterooms aboard the 45 Cantius, each with private heads, vanities and stall showers. The guest quarters are located midship with two wide, single beds that can be pushed together to become one king-size bed. There’s a pivoting TV for viewing from virtually anywhere in the room and a rather generous 5 feet of headroom. This is a great stateroom, quite large with an ensuite head and vanity. sThe master stateroom is located forward and features a comfortable queen berth, cedar-lined closet, an iPod port with remote, and the convenience of a well-appointed private head. The engine room is located aft under the cockpit floor. With the push of a button, the access hatch can hydraulically lift off to reveal the room’s contents.
Quiet power The 45 Cantius is available in IPS or diesel inboard/outboards. The boat tested had twin 375-hp Volvo Penta diesel 500s with IPS drives. The engine room has plenty of space for routine maintenance and is well laid out. When it came to cruising, well, the 45 Cantius was just plain fun. She handles like a captain’s dream, swift and nimble as Jon and I put her to the test. At 3000 RPM she cruised along at 21.7 mph and achieved a top speed of 31.7 mph at 3600 RPM. Not too shabby for a 45-footer. When we left the dock and headed into Green Bay, my first impression was how quiet the boat ran. Jon and I could easily converse with each other without having to raise our voices. I haven’t used a joystick to dock very often; however, when returning to the dock, Jon told me to take her in. The 10-knot breeze was pushing me as I gently guided the boat home. Piece of cake! Overall, the 45 Cantius is a joy to pilot. If you’re looking for a family-friendly cruiser with real get up and go, this boat is a can’t-miss on your sea trial list. r

ith the arrival of winter we tend to look at our boats from a different angle — namely, below the waterline. That’s what makes it such a great time to tackle projects like bottom painting or installing underwater lights. There have been technological advancements — and corresponding new products — in both those areas and more. Battery maintenance is another hot topic during the cold winter months. OPTIMA has a new battery charger/maintainer that can help keep your marine batteries in great shape while another industry leader, Charles Industries, has introduced a series of chargers to revolutionize your onboard battery system. Aggressive retrofitting projects, including the installation of joystick controls or autopilot systems, are now within reach, as are new and improved items like portable marine toilets and engine room lights. And among the safety and security devices and engine and boat maintenance products are items, like an inflatable stand-up paddleboard, that are just for fun. So whether you’re searching for a winter project or just a neat gift idea for the boater in your life, here’s a look at some new products from around the world of boating.

The Amphibian Trailer Boat Series (or “T-Series”) from marine lighting manufacturer OceanLED is a line of underwater LED lights designed for boats that are regularly removed from the water. The Amphibian lights do not include OceanLED’s Tritonium glass lens — which prevents the buildup of marine growth for vessels that remain in the water long term — and are therefore available at a lower price point. The Amphibian T-Series are available in three sizes: The Amphibian T3, recommended for boats up to 25 feet in length and producing 200 lumens of brightness, or the equivalent light output of a 50W halogen bulb ($129); the T6, for boats up to 30 feet and producing 400 lumens, the equivalent of an 80W halogen bulb ($279); and the T12, recommended for boats up to 35 feet and producing 800 lumens, or the equivalent of a 35W xenon bulb ($399). Each light is available in your choice of white, blue or green. The T12 also is available in dual colors for $449. The T3 and T6 require a single 3/8" hole in the hull, while the T12 is mounted and wired through a 1/2" hole, and the lights can be mounted above or below the waterline, on your T-top, or on your trailer or tailgate. Interlux Compass Clear Varnish & Micron CF Antifouling Compass Clear is a highdurability, high-gloss polyurethane varnish from Interlux Yacht Finishes (yachtpaint.com). The company says it achieves ultraviolet protection through a unique combination of UV absorbers, which convert harmful UV rays to heat that’s dissipated through the surface of the coating; hindered amine light stabilizers, which neutralize the production of chemically reactive free radicals that can degrade the coating; and antioxidants, which prevent oxidation of the varnish film that can otherwise cause the varnish to fade or become cloudy. Pricing for Compass Clear is set by retailers and ranges from $35 to $50 per quart. Also available from Interlux is Micron CF, a multi-season antifouling that uses Biolux slime blocking technology to combat slime and Econea to ward off barnacles and zebra mussels. Micron CF helps reduce paint build-up, diminish friction and improve fuel efficiency, according to the company, and is available in black, blue, red, green, and white. Suitable for use on all boats in all waters, Micron CF is available from retailers such as Boat Service & Outfitters in Holland, Michigan. Estimated pricing is $250 per gallon. BOATSE RVICES.COM

Great Lakes artist Mark McMahon takes his talents to the water. story by jodie jacobs artwork by mark m c mahon

arry Sound, Ontario might seem an unusual place to win a watercolor by noted artist Mark McMahon. However, the gorgeous setting on Georgian Bay was the scene of the Great Lakes Grand Banks Association’s Rendezvous July 26-28, 2012. McMahon, a Lake Forest, Illinois artist-reporter who captures events and scenery in sketches and watercolors, was asked to record the occasion in a painting to be raffled. He and wife Carolyn McGregor McMahon, an award-winning sculptor, were invited by Mettawa, Illinois couple John and Sarabess Cahill who have a Grand Banks trawler. Friends for more than 20 years, the Cahills knew of Mark’s talent.
Living with art, art as a living Mark’s art path was in his DNA. His dad, the late renowned artist-reporter Franklin McMahon, recorded United States presidential conventions, the Vatican, NASA milestones, travel destinations and sports highlights with artistic renderings. Mark followed in similar mode for corporations, governments, sports associations and NASA. “I always took it for granted that this was how to make a living,” Mark says. “I remember when I was nine years old I put the bricks in dad’s drawing of Killarney, ON 36 LAKELANDBOATING.COM november/december 2012

Comiskey Park for Sports Illustrated. Dad was at Comiskey on the job. He handed me a pencil and told me get to work. I’ve been working ever since.” John Cahill admires Mark’s technique. “There’s motion in his drawings,” he says. “When the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup he drew the parade and ceremony. You saw the confetti flying all over and the motion of the people. His work is not a still life. It looks like it’s happening.”
Trail to Parry Sound Parry Sound would not be Mark’s first rendezvous or fundraising request. His works for the Field Museum and Chicago Botanic Garden were used to raise funds in 1985. More recently, he did a painting and prints for the Great Lakes Grand Banks Association’s 2010 Sturgeon Bay rendezvous. Requested by the Cahills, the rendezvous raffle raised funds for a Door County food pantry and the Door County Maritime Museum. During a dinner with the McMahons the 2012 raffle idea arose because Carolyn, who didn’t make the

Sturgeon Bay trip, wished she could have been on the rendezvous, according to Sarabess. “John masterminded it. He asked if Mark was willing to help raise funds again,” she says. The problem was the Cahills were spending five weeks on the Annie Doyle, their 42-foot trawler. Even if they weren’t, the trip from their berth in Wisconsin’s Door County Peninsula to Parry Sound would take about 10 days. Not that the McMahons wouldn’t enjoy it. Carolyn grew up on Minnesota’s Lake Minnetonka where she and Mark have a cabin and take their 19-foot Cobalt for a spin, and Mark enjoys canoeing. But they didn’t have time to cruise until after the rendezvous. Instead, the McMahons flew to Toronto and continued by bus to Parry Sound for the Thursday to Saturday rendezvous. Afterward, they planned to go with the Cahills by trawler to Door County, then by car to Chicago’s suburbs. After traveling Thursday, Mark was ready for the boat scene Friday. “Mark drew like crazy,” Sarabess says. “He wanted to have sketches ready for the final dinner raffle Saturday. He would sit on our boat and others to sketch. It was wonderful.” The picture raffled was of the trawlers in Big Sound Marina. Mark would finish it in watercolors in his home studio and mark a trawler as the raffle winner’s boat. It was Castoff, owned by Grand Banks Chesapeake Bay Association members Jim and Judi Watson of Elizabeth City, North Carolina. “We’re really excited,” Judi says. “We are one of those people who never win anything.”

The return trip was scenic and surprising. Collins Inlet was a must. Sarabess explained that of the 17 boats at Parry Sound, 14 followed trail boss Jack Ward from Little Current into Georgian Bay, so the inlet wasn’t a good idea. “We were ‘Mother Goosing,’” she says. On the way back, the Cahills and McMahons traveled in tandem with Door County couple Patti and Fred Foy. “Collins Inlet is very narrow and shallow. We couldn’t go that way with a flotilla, but for sure we wanted to do it. Collins Inlet is one of the most beautiful boating places in the world,” John says. When back home, Mark shook his head as he thought of the inlet. “It was spectacular,” he said. Killarney’s personality also impressed him. “It had a boat-in movie theater on one side of the lodge and there was this really colorful place where you could get fish and chips in an old bus painted in Canada’s colors,” he said. Two aspects of the trip surprised him. “I was amazed

by the isolation of the ports, and I was stunned by how much water is there,” he said. Rough seas ended the McMahons’ boating trip at Michigan’s Harbor Springs-Petoskey area. They were hosting a big dinner in a couple of days so they couldn’t wait for calm weather. Transportation back seemed nonexistent until Carolyn noticed train cars waiting on a track. Fortunately the owners, members of a train-buff group, agreed to take Mark and Carolyn with them to their next stop: Chicago’s Union Station. “I call this (rendezvous trip) my plane, bus, boat, train trip,” Carolyn said. r Check out Mark McMahon's work, or order prints, at mcmahonartgallery.com. Charter
What to look for in a charter company and a charter vessel.
C
hartering a boat can be a fantastic way to travel the world. It allows you the opportunity to explore thriving cities as well as remote anchorages, commune with nature, and enjoy some much needed time with friends and family. Deciding where you want to charter is the obvious first step, but often there are many options to choose from in terms of charter vessels and charter companies. So… how do you decide what vessel or from which company to charter? Several factors go into making the final decision of ensuring your charter boat meets your personal needs and the needs of the local environment.
Determine the experience you’re hoping to have It’s important to decide what you want out of your vacation. Do you want to cover a lot of area in a small amount of time, or would you rather take your time meandering around towns and anchorages? Do you place more importance on space and comfort, or is speed most critical? How well equipped do you want your vessel to be and how sea kindly do you require it? Are you looking for a more self-sufficient experience, like the one a bareboat charter provides, or would you rather be pampered with onboard captains and chefs? Perhaps you’d actually prefer something in between, as is the case with group-guided flotillas. Understanding what you want out of your charter will help you make the most informed decision… and hopefully lead to the best vacation.
do company representatives make you feel? Are they knowledgeable, helpful and passionate about boating? Can they help with itinerary planning? In the event that something does go wrong, do they have a network established to help within the specific geographical region where your itinerary takes you? What is their policy regarding mechanical issues? Like any profession, the more pride people take in their work and their company, the better experience they will be able to provide.
Make sure vessels are well maintained One of the key elements in any successful charter is making sure the boat is well maintained and in good working condition. The age of a boat is not necessarily an indicator of boat quality, but a strong focus and attention on year-round maintenance is key. What is the annual maintenance schedule for the company’s charter boats? Is navigational equipment up to date? Are boat interiors kept clean, modern and fresh looking? How often are boats piloted, painted and engines checked? Does the boat have a full set of charts for the geographical region you’re planning to visit? What is the condition of any special amenities onboard? Are galleys fully stocked? Are there crab pots, dinghies, fishing gear, etc. on board? Is it company policy that everything on the boat works before it goes out on charter? Asking a few
Research charter companies and ask questions The caliber of charter company you’re dealing with is usually a good indication of the quality of the vessel you can expect to charter from said company. Scrutinize a charter company’s reputation before you set sail. What is the company culture? Are the owners and employees boaters themselves? From the first phone call you place seeking more information about the operation, how accommodating and comfortable 40 LAKELANDBOATING.COM november/december 2012

questions regarding maintenance of the charter boat can make the difference between a relaxed, amazing experience and an anxious, unnerved one.
Don’t decide based solely on price You may notice that up until this point, price hasn’t been mentioned. Of course the price of a charter is important; however, it’s equally important to take all of the issues discussed here into consideration.
Realistically, you may need to pay more for the peace of mind that comes with a quality charter boat company, but make sure you look for competitive, fair and consistent pricing. Most importantly, your charter decision should feel right. You should feel safe, comfortable and at ease on your charter boat and with the charter company you’ve decided upon. Spend your time enjoying being out on the water with family and friends — not worrying. Remember: You are chartering a boat for fun! r

The sheltered waters of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) are considered to be some of the finest blue-water cruising grounds in the Caribbean. Life is good here, no matter the time of year. Situated east of Puerto Rico, there are about 60 extraordinarily beautiful islands in the BVI, many of which remain uninhabited. Being there is like stepping back in time, to a pristine land relatively untouched by human hands… except for the fabulous beach-side restaurants, bars and resort accommodations, of course. I left for the islands in September, during the height of hurricane season. Sure, sure, some places were closed; however, on the plus side, there were no crowds. And, more importantly, no hurricanes. Quite often we were the only boat at anchor.

I arrived at The Moorings in Tortola late in the afternoon. I flew into Beef Island from San Juan, Puerto Rico (via Chicago) and was met by “Fixit,” my driver who bussed me over to Road Town on Tortola, the capital of the BVI and home to The Moorings charter base. After checking in with the manager, I was taken to the boat for a walk through and briefing. My yacht for the week was a new model, The Moorings 393 PC, a 39' power catamaran featuring a spacious salon and galley, plus three cabins and two heads. The master stateroom and head were located in the starboard hull, while the guest staterooms and head were housed in the port-side hull. The flybridge featured enough seating for six or seven guests including double seating at the captain’s console, which is centrally located and offers excellent visibility. Powered by twin 110-hp Yanmar diesel engines, the boat merely sips fuel. The yacht offers A/C, generator and upgraded electronics, plus everything necessary to make life aboard Puerto Haiti/Dominican Rico Republic comfortable. The boat cruised between 7.5 and 8 knots. You could top out at 9 or 10 knots, depending on the weight, currents, etc., but who’s in a hurry?
welcome aboard The original planVenezuela was for my wife, Linda, and I to do this cruise together; however, at the last minute, we had a scheduling conflict. Linda recommended that I go ahead with the charter and ask The Moorings to help find a captain. You need two people aboard at a minimum to handle lines, pick up the mooring ball, etc. It’s also helpful to have more than one person familiar with running the boat should anything happen to the captain. So I called

The Moorings to make arrangements. A big plus when you do hire a captain or crew is their wealth of local knowledge. After the walk-through and briefing, I stowed the provisions I’d ordered. There was a note on the galley dining table from Capt. Glen Adams stating he would arrive early the next morning. At 8:30 a.m. sharp, I heard a knock on the sliding glass doors. Standing on the aft deck was my captain, wearing a smile that beamed from ear to ear. “My name’s Glen Adams, but everyone calls me Bequia, as I am from the island of Bequia,” he explained. Bequia is a big guy, pleasant with a hearty laugh who clearly knew the BVI like the back of his hand. As the days unfolded, I suggested he consider transitioning to a career in politics, because he knew basically everyone in the BVI. Over the course of five days, Bequia introduced me to what felt like every last soul on the chain of islands. I was curious, so I asked him if he knew Fixit, my bus driver. His response: “Fixit can fix nuttin. Of course I know Fixit.”
Off to explore The BVI consist of four main islands — Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke — and other smaller islands and cays. Only 15 of the islands are inhabited. There was a lot to explore in less than a week’s time. Bequia and I decided our first stop would be Cane Garden Bay, which was my mental image of the ideal tropical anchorage. When we approached and slowly motored into the bay, there were only two other boats moored. The beach was gleaming white sugar sand and where the beach ended, the foliage began — mango bushes and palms. Once moored we dinghied to the dock and walked to Myett’s, an island hotel, bar and restaurant. It was a rustic post-and-beam establishment surrounded by a patch of palm trees, situated 20 feet from water lapping the shoreline. It’s the kind of place you’d like to hole up and write a best seller, eat lobster and drink rum. Bequia told me the owner is a successful Rasta Reggae singer named Karim who lives in Hollywood. Why he wouldn’t want to spend every waking day at this place instead of transplanting thousands of miles away, I’ll never understand. Leaving Cane Garden Bay in our wake, we headed for Jost Van Dyke and a small local restaurant called the Perfect Pineapple. It’s owned by Greg Callwood, the son of Jost Van Dyke’s legendary Foxy, who has run the beach bar and restaurant of the same name (Foxy’s) since the 1960s.
The Perfect Pineapple is located on the south shore of Jost Van Dyke, just off the beach on White Bay, 100 feet behind the well known Soggy Dollar Bar. The Pineapple serves outstanding local fare and you get the opportunity to meet the local people, who are delightful. After our scrumptious lunch, we headed out and toured Great Harbour, home to Foxy’s, and afterwards moved on to Little Harbour, where we planned to spend the night. A quick side note: Docks are few and far between, and expensive. Instead, there are mooring balls one can tie off of that are much cheaper (and I feel preferable). As you move with the wind, the scenery changes and you’re always facing into the breeze. We arrived at Little Harbour at 5:30 p.m. and tied off to a mooring ball. After a couple of drinks and a few hors d’oeuvres we lowered the dinghy and headed over to Sidney’s Peace and Love restaurant, which is run by Strawberry, the late Sidney’s daughter. Strawberry’s husband is a lobster fisherman, assuring fresh lobster during the season.

The bvis are one of nature’s wonders. there’s always a breeze, and the water is a beautiful turquoise.
On this trip we ate like kings, soaking up the local flavors every chance we got. My one regret was the curried goat, which, in all honesty, Bequia cautioned me against. I should have been wise enough to listen! We spent a night at Leverick Bay (Virgin Gorda) where we ate and I spent the afternoon reading and snoozing. I had a kayak on board as well as snorkeling gear; however, cruising, eating, reading, telling stories, and laughing seem to have taken up most of my time. I also spent quite a bit of time walking the beaches. The magnificent North Sound of Virgin Gorda is a unique place with vast anchorages for charterers and excellent resorts. One of the most exclusive resorts in the world, Biras Creek is in the far corner of North Sound near Bitter End Yacht Club. Adjacent to Biras Creek on a private peninsula is Oil Nut Bay. I’ve done many charters over the years, and the questions I always get from readers about my travels revolve around the differences between operating a boat in salt water versus fresh water. Readers are confident piloting boats in the sweetwater seas of our Great Lakes, but seem easily intimidated by the idea of operating in the ocean. When posed with this question, I always respond in similar fashion: If you’re OK running a boat on the Great Lakes, then you’ll be equally comfortable in the waters of the BVI… or anywhere. What would I do if I had more time? I think more of the same… except I’d have Linda with me to enjoy the white sandy beaches, picture-perfect waters and the diversity of the place. Planning Your Charter
Tips on boat and trip selection, charter companies and more. by mar k cor ke
G
etting the best from a charter vacation starts long before you step aboard the boat. It certainly pays to do a little homework before handing over your deposit check. Luckily, the internet makes it easy to research companies, prices and other pertinent information before you commit valuable time or money to your upcoming charter vacation.
Where to go The first thing to consider when contemplating booking a charter is where you want to go. The Caribbean is probably the most popular charter destination for U.S. citizens, as it’s fairly close and served by many airports with an abundance of flights. The Pacific Northwest is another hotspot, and one that most people have on their to-do list. Depending on when you travel, your vacation must take the weather into account. For example, when considering travel to the Caribbean you probably want to avoid a visit during hurricane season. Personally, my favorite charter destination is the British Virgin Islands, or BVI for short. I’m not the only one who adores this locale, as it is without a doubt the world’s busiest single bareboat charter destination. Navigation is easy, trade winds are predictable, and the islands are close to one another with pristine beaches and crystal-clear warm water that make the area ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
Type of boat
MARK CORKE is an accomplished journalist, author and sailor. He’s the creator of the popular blog onboardwithmarkcorke.com, which focuses on various DIY boating projects. 54 LAKELANDBOATING.COM november/december 2012
Wherever you go, you’ll need to decide on the type of boat you’d like to charter. Catamarans are probably best for nervous sailors and older folks, or those unsteady on their sea legs. They don’t heel over like a monohull and offer prodigious amounts of room, which makes them social boats, great for large parties of friends or families. You can expect a charter cat to have a head for every guest cabin. Monohulls are great, too, but they don’t have the room of a comparable cat of the same length, and the room below is likely to be more “cozy” (read: Tighter quarters). When chartering first started making inroads into boating holidays, the boats were almost all sail; but now companies like The Mooring offer a range of power catamarans that are as spacious as their sailing counterparts, with the added advantage that you can cover more ground if time is limited.
Boating experience If contemplating a bareboat charter (where you captain the boat yourself), just about every company will want details about your prior boating experience. If you’re not entirely up to the task you can opt for a crewed charter, where the charter company provides a captain for you at an extra charge. He or she will know the area and may be able to show you local spots that others may not know about. Your captain may also know the best places to eat ashore, or where to see the most fish if you go snorkeling. Another alternative to hiring a captain is to join a flotilla. This is where a lead boat guides the fleet from port to port and is always available should you have any questions or get into difficulties. A flotilla is a good option for those with limited boating experience. It also provides the added benefit of getting together with others at the end of the day if you choose to socialize. When making the decision of captain, bareboat or flotilla, it’s important to consider the other members of your boating party; after all, not everyone may be as keen as you on being the boat’s skipper.
Charter costs The cost of a charter varies depending on when and where you go, the size of the boat, and obviously the length of the charter. One way to ease the burden is to charter a boat with friends who will share the cost of the trip. It’s also worth it to consider cancellation insurance, which you can purchase from the charter company if an unforeseen circumstance prevents you from going at the last minute. With insurance coverage, you won’t be out of pocket to the tune of several thousand dollars. Other added costs can be for additional items like paddleboards, kayaks or windsurfers. All boats in the Caribbean have dinghies with outboards, but I can tell you from experience these are often an optional extra in the Mediterranean, for example. Read the fine print before you sign on the dotted line or research online so you know exactly what you can expect when you arrive. If there’s a problem with the boat or its equipment, speak up immediately; don’t wait until you get home, as it will be too late in many cases for the charter company to do anything to make it right after the fact. If you’ve never experienced a charter vacation, then a I urge you to go. I can almost guarantee you’ll love it and wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. r PHOTO BY MArK COrKE

Thrust is a Must
IMTRA Corporation’s Peter Nolet shares his expertise on the use and benefits of marine thrusters. LB: What is a bow/stern thruster and how does it work? Nolet: Thrusters are propulsion equipment that aid in docking and close-quarter maneuvering. Simply put, they move water from one side to the other, creating thrust to move the boat. LB: What kinds of boats need them? Nolet: Any boat can benefit from the assistance of thrusters. They are especially helpful for less-experienced boaters or those who operate in tight marinas or waterways.

56 LAKELANDBOATING.COM november/december 2012
LB: Are there different types of thrusters? Nolet: There are many. The most common are tunnel thrusters, but there are also retractable and external thrusters. They are available in different sizes to provide the performance desired. Some brands, like Side-Power, offer a full range, while others focus on niche applications. LB: Don’t boats need both bow and stern thrusters, or can one or the other be used? Nolet: Since boats steer from the stern, a bow thruster provides more benefit, as you can actually “steer” the bow like a car at slow speeds. A bow and stern thruster combo provides total control of a boat. LB: Do thrusters slow down a boat? Nolet: If installed properly, most thrusters should not create any drag. On tunnel thrusters, it is important to finish the ends so that water is directed past the tunnel opening. This is especially important on higher speed boats. LB: What kind of maintenance do thrusters require? Are they subject to fouling? Nolet: Most thrusters require little maintenance, with general care of the motor or powering system and annual change of anodes. Some brands use a seal with lifetime lubrication. Others use an oil-fill gear leg that requires oil changes every three years depending on use. Below-water components should be treated similarly to the boat’s hull with antifouling paint.
LB: How are they mounted? Can they be retrofitted? Nolet: Tunnel thrusters have the lower unit with prop(s) mounted in the tunnel and the motor and drive connection inside the boat. Retractable thrusters are entirely inside and deploy the tunnel/lower unit when operating. External thrusters are mounted outside the boat. Thrusters can be refit to most boats. LB: How are thrusters powered? Nolet: Thrusters are available in DC, AC and hydraulic power. Some brands, like Side-Power, offer products in all power configurations. DC thrusters are the most common for boats under 70 feet. LB: Are thrusters noisy? Nolet: Some brands have developed products to reduce the noise. Cavitation caused by sharp edges on tunnel ends increase noise by almost 45 percent, so finishing tunnel ends with a radius is important. Sharp edges can also reduce performance by up to 25 percent. On-off controlled thrusters are also noisier than proportionally controlled thrusters. LB: How much should an owner expect to pay for one? Nolet: Prices vary by brand, product, size, and type of thruster. I would suggest getting quotes from more than one reputable installer to compare. A thruster is a product that increases the overall enjoyment of your boat and will increase its resale value. Most thrusters are not DYI projects. The overall cost for a thruster refit has come down over the years, with more experienced installers and better product. LB: How do boaters go about choosing a thruster? Nolet: It can be confusing with the many brands available. Some have unique features, especially on the safety side. Others offer product that complements the styling of the boat. I would first look at the performance desired. Where do you operate your boat, and what do you want the thruster to do? Then look at brands and compare. Lastly, who can do the install? And get some quotes to compare. Labor is a big part of a thruster refit, and rates vary dramatically. Ultimately you want a product that provides a good value and you can be confident will receive support over its lifetime. r PHOTO COURTESY OF IMTRA

ocated on the northern side of Lake Erie, directly across from Ashtabula and Fairport Harbor, Ohio, and about 30 minutes south of London, Ontario, Kettle Creek Marina offers a high level of hospitality and the personal service to match, welcoming individuals from all over the Great Lakes and beyond. Started by the husband and wife team of John Jackson and Fiona Nisbet in 1986, the Kettle Creek Marina has a prime spot smack dab in the middle of Port Stanley, a charming fishing village. “Everything is a one-minute walk from the marina,” Nisbet says. “Port Stanley is a wonderful little town, with lots of little boutiques, good bistros, beach bars, and small country inns.” The marina is technically situated on Kettle Creek, which feeds into Lake Erie. Access to the big lake is quick and easy, as it’s just a hop, skip and a jump away on the other side of a lift bridge. Over the years, Nisbet and Jackson have transformed the marina. This year new restrooms and showers opened. The couple takes pride in keeping their facilities among the cleanest on Lake Erie.
“We also have beautifully landscaped grounds with picnic areas, shady areas, grass and flowers,” Nisbet says. “It’s not all concrete.” It’s a personal place, Nisbet says, likening the marina to a charming bed and breakfast. “We live onsite,” she says. “We always say it’s like having friends stay in our backyard.” Other perks on site include three propane grills, lawn chairs, two pop-up sun tents, a campfire, and complimentary use of two paddleboats perfect for exploring Kettle Creek. “It’s a very personalized experience,” Nisbet adds. “And you really can’t see the marina from the road. It is very private.” There are a total of 30 slips, which can accommodate boats up to 50 feet. Water depth is about 6 feet. Typically eight to 10 slips are available for transient boaters, and reservations are strongly recommended. There’s also plenty to do in the area, including visiting two beaches less than 10 minutes away. Says Nisbet, “We look forward to seeing you next summer!” r PHOTOS COURTESY OF KETTLE CREEK MARINA

estled into a private cove in northern Lake Charlevoix, the home dubbed Castle Cove lives up to its name. Located on more than four acres, it boasts 8,300 square feet, a whopping six bedrooms, and features so unique it’s clear no expense was spared. But perhaps what most sets the house apart is its location. You’d never know it’s less than 3 miles from downtown Charlevoix. “From this property, you can’t see any other property,” says Todd Anson, who, along with wife Terri, owns the home. “From our screened-in porch we look at a couple miles of shoreline and don’t see a single rooftop.” The home, which the Ansons built in 2007, is a blend of three styles: An Adirondack cottage in upstate New York, the Awanhee Hotel in Yosemite, and a Craftsman home. The home’s central floor plan takes advantage of the incredible views. From the front door you can see straight through the great room out to the lake. The master suite is on the main floor; upstairs are two bedrooms and a reading loft. The lower walkout level boasts two additional bedrooms, a bar, kitchen, wine cellar, and two basements. All windows and doors in the house have striking black walnut trim, and the flooring is also black walnut.
Two screened-in porches and one open-air deck help make the most of the home’s incredible surroundings. Above the attached three-car garage, which features radiant in-floor heating, is a guest suite complete with a bedroom, bath, laundry and kitchen. There’s a second three-car garage located on the property as well. Then there are the eccentric touches that truly set the home apart, including the use of extremely rare clinker bricks (essentially mistakes in the brick-making process that today are considered architectural treasures) to construct the home. “The bricks on this house are from this brick factory in Missouri,” Anson says. “Only four buildings have been made out of them.” The landscaping is incredible, with a pond, streams, intricate irrigation, and several types of trees including white birch, river birch, weeping beech, weeping willows, blue spruce — even a couple of redwoods. The home, with more than 300 feet of gorgeous sand beach, is less than 3 miles from Lake Michigan, which also means easy access to explore waterways near and far. There’s a 200-foot portable dock on the property, as well as a spot to park two jet skis. r PHOTOs COURTEsY OF PAT O’BRIEN

Obsession is a Lobster Boat My lifelong dream of owning this utilitarian, no-frills vessel. by dave wallace
I
DAVE WALLACE
has been boating in the Great Lakes for more than 35 years. He’s written for Lakeland Boating since 1993 and helped develop the first edition of Lakeland Boating’s Ports o’ Call cruising guides. 72 LAKELANDBOATING.COM november/december 2012
’m willing to wager a season’s slip fees that in spite of whatever sort of boat you own now, somewhere deep down inside your secret psyche is the obsession to own (or at least try) something completely different. For male skippers, this could involve either massive horsepower and awesome speed, or a luxury yacht with all the amenities. Perhaps even a classic woodie to wow the channel crowd. My fantasy always involved comfort. A boat with all the amenities of home, including air conditioning and TV. When we finally achieved this comfort goal with our trawler Dragon Lady, I felt sure my fantasy had become real at last. We spent season after season of joyful cruising without obsession. Then it happened: We pulled into Leland Harbor and came bow to stern with an honest-to-gosh, saltwater lobster boat! That first look stunned all the logic neurons in my brain and sent me right back to Fantasyland. If you’re not familiar with these boats, it’s because they’re a rarity on the Great Lakes. Designed for the sole purpose of harvesting lobster traps, they have nothing to do with recreational comfort. They run in the 30- to 40-foot range and have a very definite profile in the same way that the original Volkswagen Beetle stood out from all the other look-alike autos. The hull is flat sided ending in a properly pointed bow, free of a protruding pulpit. What little cabin there is sits as far forward as possible to make room for a workspace that looks more like the bed of a pickup truck than the cockpit of a boat. It certainly fails the comfort test as a full-time liveaboard, so you probably wonder why I’d become so obsessed with the idea of a lobster boat. Probably for the same reason that pioneers obsessed over their Conestoga Wagons: They get the job done with a minimum amount of frills or upkeep. At the very least, the lobster boat shows the world that its skipper is independent, self confident and stands apart from the crowd. As I looked down at this salty stranger, I felt a sudden rush of desire. There was no logic involved; no rationality. It was one of those attacks that seem increasingly common among senior men. Some older men get this same feeling when they see a pretty young lady. Others get it when
faced with imported roadsters. My moment just happened to involve a lobster boat. The sparse simplicity of the design seemed to connect with the inner pioneering spirit that still burns bright in the far reaches of the genes we inherited from our founding forefathers. What I saw that day was a rough and ready vessel that could take me to the farthest reaches of our Great Lakes system, where every moment is lived as adventure. My lifestyle would be akin to that of the early fur traders. I could live off the land and trade beaver pelts for flour and fuel. I would grow a beard and sleep under the stars in that great open cockpit. Only when the early ice began to form around my waterline would I work my way back to civilization and reunite with my family. This hypnotic obsession finally burned away with the reality of the August sun. I made my way to our air conditioned stern cabin and soon fell asleep in the comfort of my double width bunk. When I finally awoke for dinner, the lobster boat was gone. The fantasy still lingered. Maybe some day… r ILLusTrATION BY MIKE hArrIs
