A RELATIONSHIP WHERE THERE IS NO HIS OR HERS, ONLY OURS. Aboard a Gran Turismo, performance and style are not mutually exclusive. He gets the best boat on the water, and she gets reservations at a floating 4-star resort. The latest hull configurations and fuel-efficient engines have been integrated with a truly elegant interior design. The result is a motor yacht where style is as much about speed and seakeeping as performance is about space, comfort and luxury. Everybody wins. After all, isn’t that what strong relationships are built on.

Remembering the Past O
ne of my favorite pastimes is reading. I’m always on the prowl for that “next great book.” For years I have collected volumes on anything to do with the Great Lakes — its history, as well as the major waterways. On a cold, wet day last March, while browsing the stacks at Sandmeyer’s, the bookstore across the street from our office in Chicago’s Printer’s Row, a title caught my attention: “Wicked River: The Mississippi When it Last Ran Wild.” In it, the book’s author, Lee Sandlin, a fellow Chicagoan, portrays life on the Mississippi River pre-Civil War. This was a time in history before the Army Corps of Engineers began its attempt to tame the wild waterway. River life was intense, and area inhabitants — both man and animal — feral. Lakeland Boating editor-at-large Heather Steinberger penned a wonderful profile of the area based on Sandlin’s book (“River of Secrets,” p. 32). I read the book a few months ago, but after reading Heather’s article I began to think again about traveling the Mississippi from the Headwaters up in Minnesota down to the lower Mississippi and into New Orleans. What an adventure that would be! While I haven’t cruised the full length of the Mississippi, I have done the 150-mile stretch between Alton, Illinois to the entrance of the Ohio River. Our last trip downriver began in Chicago aboard our Grand Banks trawler. We ran down the Illinois River, which was pretty docile that fall, down to the convergence and then into the Mississippi. We planned to spend a night in St. Louis, Missouri. We called ahead and landed at the marina. After tying up, I noticed the speedometer read 7 knots with the boat standing still. Strange. The next couple of days were interesting. We had high water and it seemed as though we were racing Redwoods to New Orleans. My 12-knot trawler was, with the help of the current, doing 22 knots!
If I were to do the entire river to the Gulf, I would try for a time when the river was a little more quiet. At least there are no longer pirates on the Mississippi like those that Lee Sandlin describes in his book. Don’t miss this month’s port of call on New Buffalo, Michigan. Lakeland contributor Mira Temkin has written a detailed profile of the area on p. 36. If you’re headed up to the west coast of Michigan, this is the place to tie up for a night, week or even a month. I have fond memories of New Buffalo. I bought my first boat, a wooden Chris-Craft, with my friend, Phil Murtaugh, in New Buffalo. We bought the boat from Jim Haynes, who was at that time the sales manager at Oselka Marina. He later became a good friend. The maiden voyage to Phil’s place in South Haven, Michigan was exciting, as we nearly sank in front of the Coast Guard station in St. Joe, Michigan. We neglected to let the wood swell. Lesson learned. Speaking of old wooden boats… Kim Lunman, owner and publisher of Island Life Magazine based in the Thousand Islands, is back this month with a piece about the rich antique boat heritage of the area in which she lives and works (p. 30). The town of Clayton, New York is synonymous with antique wooden boats, and it’s the perfect home for the Antique Boat Museum (ABM), which is headquartered there. We’ve come a long way from the wooden boats of our past to the marvels of modern design and engineering we see plying our waters today. My final thought: Technology has changed the world and at the same time robbed us of our precious leisure time. A quote from Bill Watterson, of “Calvin and Hobbes” fame, says it best: “There’s never enough time to do all the nothing you want.” See you on the water!

Great lake erie Boat float Who says you can’t turn trash into treasure, then sail off into the sunset? That’s exactly what participants in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s 5th annual Great Lake Erie Boat Float intend to do on September 7. Participants in the Boat Float build plastic boats entirely out of post-consumer recycled materials, then enter them into the competition. The event takes place at 10 a.m. at the Cleveland Metroparks Lakefront Reservation’s Edgewater Beach. Winners will be recognized in four categories: Fastest Boat; Best Use of Recyclable Materials; Most Artistic Style; and Li’l Sailors. Afterwards, all boats will have the option of being recycled by RES Polyflow using their alternative energy process. The deadline to register an entry is August 30. Hobie Mirage Tandem Island
Imagine total relaxation and comfort while in port or offshore—
providing you and your guests with an onboard experience
Back in July, Lakeland Boating art director Christy Tuttle Bauhs and her husband, Mark, rented a brand new Hobie Mirage Tandem Island through Chicago Jet Ski Rentals out of the city’s 31st Harbor and had a blast. Here’s what she had to say about the experience:
“
unlike any other. That is why we engineered the most effective anti-rolling device ever made—the Seakeeper® Gyro. Experience the Seakeeper® Gyro and change your boating experience forever. • Eliminates 60-80% of
While searching for a fun activity to do after work when the kids were away at summer camp, my husband stumbled across a Groupon that advertised a Hobie Mirage Tandem Island rental through Chicago Jet Ski Rentals. The Groupon deal made it a no brainer, so we scheduled a trip! After a short lesson from Chicago Jet Ski owner John Gibbs, we were off and sailing. Neither of us had ever really sailed before, but the sailing kayak was very easy to pilot. Surprisingly, we were pros in about 2 minutes. The sail controls can be operated from either seat, and there were controls for both of us to steer and operate the rudder. The pedals, which use cool Mirage Drive technology, were easy to push — even after 2 hours on the water! We moved pretty fast under pedal-power, even without a breeze. This was seriously the perfect introduction to sailing. The sail was a cinch to bring in and out, and when we caught a good breeze, wow… we were flying! The outriggers made me feel safe, even while crossing bigger boat wakes. Based on our trip, we’d highly recommend this Hobie experience!

Windquest Wins 105th Chicago-to-Mackinac Race For the second time in three years, Windquest was the first boat to cross the finish line of the 105th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, which took place Saturday, July 13 and ran from Chicago, Illinois to Mackinac Island, Michigan. The Max Z86 yacht, owned by Dick and Doug DeVos and based out of Macatawa Bay Yacht Club in Holland, Michigan, arrived at the race’s end on Sunday, July 14. The DeVoses said light winds in the latter half of the race made its completion “very challenging.” Winquest’s 20-person crew completed the race in 49: 57: 52. Thousands of sailors participate in the 333-mile race on Lake Michigan each year. This year’s event was one of the slowest on record due to the light wind conditions.

Pink Boat “Tows For a Cure” When Captain Brian Williams of TowBoatUS Detroit, an on-the-water towing and assistance service for recreational boaters out of Detroit, Michigan, wanted to do something for his mom, he picked up a can of pink paint. The matriarch of the Williams family had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, and after a brave battle she passed away two years later. Capt. Williams decided to do something for his mom and help raise awareness of the disease by painting his formerly red towboat bright pink and changing her name to Hope.
Capt. Williams donates a portion of his towing revenue to breast cancer research. “I call it ‘towing for a cure,’ he says. “It’s our way to say we are here for those suffering from this monster. We want to help rid the world of cancer.” Hope is the only pink towboat in the entire 600-vessel BoatUS fleet. Check out a video of Hope by visiting YouTube and searching for “TowBoat Hope” from BoatUS videos. If you’d like to make a donation to fund breast cancer research, visit karmanos.org/marineone.

NAME GAME MAYFLOWER This is my 18th Mayflower, Mayflower XVIII, a 2007 Sea Ray Sundancer. My first Mayflower was really the very first Sea Ray Sundancer, the 1975 240 Sundancer prototype. I worked at Sea Ray in Phoenix at the time, and the boat had made the rounds of the dealer shows. Being young and single at the time, I was encouraged to name it Mayflower I, in hopeful anticipation and honor of the girls that came across (on the Mayflower). As years went by, the name stuck. And today, we’re up to XVIII! —Roger Giles, Knoxville, TN
SEA KNOT TRA My boat is called Sea Knot Tra. It pays homage to Frank Sinatra, and since I’m a big Frank fan, I thought it would be appropriate. My very good friend, Tony Yannone, who is a bigger fan of Frank Sinatra than I am, came up with the name. Sea Knot Tra graces the waterways of Chicago — specifically, Burnham Harbor. —Mark Mattozzi, Chicago, IL

The Round Barn Winery Savor the flavors of this family-run winery, brewery and distillery in Baroda, Michigan.
I
f your spirit of adventure focuses on, well, spirits, then The Round Barn in Baroda, Michigan is a perfect destination for you. Boasted as Michigan’s largest, this turn-of-the-century, high-beam Amish barn was originally built in 1881 and features a winery, microbrewery and distillery, all rolled into one. Round Barn was one of the first facilities in Michigan to produce all three beverage categories. Founded by the Moersch family, Round Barn celebrates the season with tastings, live music and bottling your own wine come harvest time. No matter what your palate, a visit to The Round Barn will teach you about vintages and set you on the path to becoming an educated spirits connoisseur.

Shore AVA (American Viticultural Area). Interestingly, the lake effect climate parallels the same micro-climate as the Alsace and Burgundy regions of France, making the area conducive to fertile grape growing. You could say winemaker Matt Moersch grew up in the business, picking grapes as a boy with his brother, Christian. Their father, Richard Moersch, founded The Round Barn in 1992, bringing more than 25 years of winemaking experience to production. After apprenticing with his father, Matt sharpened his fermenting, brewing and distilling skills through extensive training in France, Germany, Hungary and California and became The Round Barn’s winemaker and distiller in 2002. The Round Barn Winery, a member of The Lake Michigan Shore Wine Country, is known for its diversity of wines from Sauvignon Blanc to Merlot to Chardonnay. “We try to change the varieties of grapes we grow,” says Matt. “Our newest creation, Black Walnut Cream Wine, took more than four years to develop and has quickly become one of our most popular.” The Round Barn Winery, Brewery & Distillery 10983 Hills Rd., Baroda, MI 49101 800-716-WINE RoundBaRnWIneRy.com

With more than 30 years of fermentation experience and an award-winning reputation, The Round Barn’s line of hand-crafted brews delivers satisfyingly bold taste. Brew master Christian Moersch describes his brews as “lighter in style and easy to drink,” with 20 different varieties such as Amber Ale, Cocoa Stout, Kölsch Style, and many more.
Throughout the summer and fall, The Round Barn hosts a variety of free events. Every Saturday (3-6 p.m. ET) and Sunday (2-5 p.m. ET) from May through October, enjoy Jammin’ in the Vineyard, featuring musicians from around the Midwest on an open air live music stage. Sip world-class wines and grab a picnic lunch or dinner from The Round Barn Café. Celebrate the 21st Annual Harvest Party on Saturday and Sunday, August 24-25, with live music, dancing, hand-crafted wine, micro-brews, DiVine cocktails, hayrides, a bounce house, and grape stomping, too. The Round Barn is known for its weekend winemaking program, which allows people to experience the winemaking process and literally enjoy the fruits of their labor. “People love an opportunity to make their own wine, and some couples have been coming for 10 years,” says Matt. “It’s a total immersion experience, which includes everything from hand-picking the grapes to dumping the grapes into the crushing machine to creating your own blend. Everyone who participates gets a case of 24 bottles for their efforts.” Dates for this year’s White Winemaking Experience are Saturday, September 28, at a cost of $475 per couple. The Red Winemaking Experience takes place Saturday, October 12 or Sunday, October 13. Cost is $525 per couple. Bottling events are scheduled for Spring 2014. And the most challenging part of winemaking? Matt Moersch claims it’s the natural elements. “From the amount of rain to picking and pruning by hand, we’re always at the mercy of Mother Nature and hoping for a good crop,” he says. LB
A “DiVine” distillery The Round Barn also produces bourbon, rum and vodka under the DiVine Spirits label. “Our DiVine Bourbon is made of corn, malted barley and just a touch of rye to give it a nice spicy kick on the finish,” says Matt. “We only produce a handful of barrels each year.” The family’s winter travels south contributed to the production of a light, tropical silver rum. “This smooth, flavorful rum is distilled twice and aged in stainless steel at a cool temperature to give it a fresh fruit character,” Matt adds. Perhaps the crème de la crème is their DiVine Vodka, the Midwest’s first ultra-premium estate vodka, only one of four vodkas in the world made from grapes. “DiVine Vodka was born out of our passion to create a domestic ultra-premium vodka from grapes, instead of grains or potatoes,” Matt explains. “The result is an award-winning, refreshingly crisp, yet remarkably smooth vodka.” There are two locations in the area to taste all of The Round Barn products: The Baroda Tasting Room & Estate and Union Pier Tasting Room. Check The Round Barn’s website, rounDBArnwinery.com, for specific hours.

Down Time Winterizing your boat’s engine and fuel systems.
N
ow that boating season is winding down, it’s time to make plans to prep your boat for that long winter’s nap. A big part of those plans will involve properly laying up your vessel’s engine and fuel system. Let’s take a look at some basic tips designed to ensure both of these important systems make it safely through the coming winter months.
Systems checklist While winterizing your engine and fuel system is well within the ability of most basic DIYers, mistakes now can mean costly repairs come spring. The simplest way to eliminate layup mistakes is by making a checklist. Start by reviewing the engine manual and other such relevant material to
generate step-by-step instructions so that all manufacturerrecommended steps are completed correctly. Compiling a list of tools and supplies needed to complete each step (antifreeze, cleaners, lubricants, etc.) will make each task easier and quicker to accomplish. There may be parts of the winterizing process you prefer to leave to the pros, but even so the ones you can do will not only save you money, but also provide a familiarity that will almost surely come in handy should engine or fuel problems arise while you’re out on the water. Here’s a list representative of a typical inboard cruiser that you can build on while developing your own engine and fuel system layup checklist:
❏ Engine winterization Integral oil changing pumps make engine oil changes a breeze.
An example of a deteriorated cooling system hose — something you should look for while winterizing.

1. An important part of any engine winterizing list is changing the oil and filter. Doing this as part of your fall layup (rather than spring commissioning) will prevent dirty oil laden with grime and potentially corrosive combustion byproducts from resting in the crankcase all winter. Run your engine up to operating temperature beforehand (warm oil is easier to change and will have more contaminates in suspension), then run it 5 minutes or so afterward to distribute clean oil throughout the engine. 2. Check the transmission fluid level and change that, too, if recommended by the manufacturer. 3. Clean the engine exterior of oil and grime using a suitable cleaner or degreaser, avoiding those that require a freshwater rinse afterwards. 4. Inspect the engine for corrosion, loose hardware, leaks and other such issues, all of which should be corrected now rather than in the spring. 5. Flush the cooling system. If you have an open system, drain completely (paying particular attention to low spots or other areas where water could be trapped). For closed systems, drain the open (raw water) side completely or fill with antifreeze, then check the strength and level of antifreeze in the reservoir. Keep in mind it isn’t the antifreeze properties, but rather the rust inhibiting qualities of the coolant, that break down and require renewal. When in doubt about the age of your coolant, play it safe and replace it. 6. Check internal engine zincs and replace as needed. Zincs are normally replaced during the season

don’t hesitate to renovate
when worn 50 percent or more, but installing new ones when winterizing means one less thing to worry about during the spring. 7. Pull rubber pump impellors, both for inspection and to prevent setting of the vanes over the winter. Many owners simply pull them and install new ones in the spring as cheap insurance against failure (used ones in good condition can be kept as emergency spares). 8. Inspect all hoses for looseness, leaks or signs of deterioration (softening, crackling sounds when squeezed, swelling at hose clamps, etc.) and replace if questionable. 9. Clean all water intake strainers, then drain or add antifreeze (depending on the system they serve). 10. Block exhaust outlets and air inlets to prevent unwanted critters (rodents, insects, etc.) from moving aboard.
❏ Fuel system layup 1. Change primary and secondary engine fuel filters and clear bowls of water and sediment. 2. Top off fuel tanks to avoid condensation and in the case of E-10 gasoline (gasoline containing 10 percent ethanol), to reduce phase separation. Some
experts suggest completely draining the tank if E-10 is used, then refilling with fresh gasoline in the spring. Unfortunately, draining a built-in fuel tank is rarely easy or particularly safe. A more practical recommendation for gasoline-powered vessels is to fill tanks 95 percent full (allowing 5 percent for expansion). This both reduces condensation and minimizes explosive vapors. The worst storagerelated E-10 problems occur with fuel tanks that are only ¼- or ½-full when winterized. 3. Add appropriate fuel stabilizers in the recommended quantities. In addition to stabilizers, diesel fuel should also be treated with a biocide additive to inhibit algae growth. E-10 gasoline requires additional additives and precautions to prevent phase separation due to water absorption (ethanol absorbs water like a sponge). 4. When filling gasoline tanks in preparation for storage, use the highest octane gas available to help compensate for octane loss over the winter months. 5. Once you’ve topped off the tanks and treated your fuel, run the engine for 15 to 30 minutes to disperse the treated fuel throughout the entire fuel system. This is also a good time to apply fogging oil (if appropriate) to protect the engine. LB

Winding Down for Winter Prepping your vessel for end-of-season storage.
—>
Give the boat a ub good scr before to heading ine! storag
R
egular readers of my column will probably accuse me of sounding like a broken record, but there’s more to laying up a boat for winter than switching off the batteries, locking the cabin and walking away. Any boat that is correctly “put to bed” at the end of a season will suffer less in the off season, maintenance costs will be reduced, and the boat will better maintain its appearance — the end result being that the boat’s residual value is enhanced to some degree.
Engine care and general repairs Winter layup preparation should start with a checklist. Detail anything that needs fixing on the boat during the winter months so you can get these items and systems repaired in good time. It’s a good plan to service the engine and other mechanical parts before the boat is laid up. That way, time will be saved in the new year, and, more importantly, the engine will have fresh oil. Fresh oil will better protect the inner workings of the engine. Oil that’s been sitting around can contain sulphur and other potentially harmful chemicals that can damage the engine’s interior working parts.
Air quality and ventilation A light bleach solution wiped on the interior of the cupboards and cabinets will remove any mold that may have accumulated during the season and leave the boat smelling fresh. Some folks swear by dryer sheets and leave these in strategic places on board. Personally, I prefer open trays of baking soda, which are both environmentally friendly and cheap. Or, opt for products like Kanberra Gel. You can also wipe a little lemon oil onto the inside of drawers and cupboards for an added boost of freshness. Adequate ventilation is essential. Open drawers and lockers and prop open refrigerator and deep freezer lids and doors. If the boat is being stored indoors or under shrink wrap, crack open hatches and doors to allow air to circulate freely.

Exterior and bilge care It’s a good idea to give the outside of the boat a good washdown using plenty of clean water and boat soap.
|
sEPtEmbER 2013
Waxing the hull and deck also goes a long way towards protecting your investment. It should go without saying that the boat must be completely dry before it’s stored. Bilge pumps do a good job getting most of the water out of a boat, but they rarely (if ever) remove all the water. To ensure you remove all traces of water, use a sponge and get as much out as possible; water left in the boat during the off season will promote the growth and spread of mold and mildew. If your boat is equipped with a bilge drain plug, remove it once the boat is out of the water. If the plug is pulled out for winter — and provided that the boat is left in a bow-up configuration — any water finding its way below to the bilge will simply drain out. I like to tape the plug to the steering column so that it’s not forgotten or misplaced come spring in the excitement to relaunch the boat.
Rodes, lines and sails Anchor rodes and mooring lines get encrusted with dirt, which make them stiff to handle — and the embedded dirt actually causes them to wear out faster. Wash rodes and lines with a mild detergent in a bucket of water, then rinse well before hanging out to dry. Coil them loosely and store in a dark place away from direct sunlight. If you happen to own a sailboat, remove all sails and get these to the sail loft for service, cleaning and any necessary repairs. Most lofts will service sails and store them until you need them next year. Boaters tend to forget about their sails, but that’s a dangerous prospect; they are the main “engine” that drives the boat, so they should receive as much care and attention as an inboard engine.
Peace of mind Preparing your boat for winter doesn’t have to be overwhelming if you approach the process methodically. As you lay the boat up for winter, make a step-by-step checklist of what you did so that you’ll have it handy next year, adding to or amending it as required. That way, when spring finally rolls around and you’re itching to get back out on the water, you can whip out the list and work through it in reverse order. If, however, you plan on hiring a boat yard to do your decommissioning tasks, reach out to them early; don’t wait until there’s just a couple weeks left before the season starts up again. Being organized and planning ahead will allow you to head out in your boat knowing that you’ve covered all the bases. But double check you put that drain plug back in! LB

ICoM | IC-M400BB VHF transceiver With more, smaller boats coming into the market, helm space is at a premium; yet boaters still need the safety and convenience of a good VHF marine radio on board. ICOM, one of the world’s most respected marine radio manufacturers, tackled the problem head on with the M400BB, a two-part VHF radio. One part ICOM calls the Black Box Transceiver (the guts of the radio), and the other is dubbed COMMANDMIC, the handheld microphone.
The Black Box can be mounted out of sight underneath the dash or inside a center console. COMMANDMIC is simply plugged into a cable system that leads from the Black Box to a fitting on the dash. All function controls, including the DSC (Digital Selective Calling) operation, can be activated from COMMANDMIC. Other features include active noise cancelling, a 10-watt amplifier powering a foghorn, and a public address system. Prices vary, so contact your local ICOM dealer for more information. Floscan | Fuel Management system Fuel management has become increasingly important, particularly given the current price of fuel. It has likewise become critical to those seeking faster results in the Bermuda Challenge, a race against time starting on the East Coast of the United States. The route crosses 760 miles of open ocean to Bermuda. The only real rule of the challenge? Refueling is not permitted. The most recent challenger, Chris Fertig, who first tried the Challenge unsuccessfully in 2011, set out again from New York on August 5, 2012 — but this time he had a FloScan fuel management system on board. The system gave him sufficient, accurate, real-time fuel information, allowing him to complete the Challenge and set a new world record of 21 hours 39 minutes. Fertig credits FloScan with making the Challenge successful. He says he and teammate Tyson Garvin hit some 6- to 8-foot seas in the Gulf Stream, which slowed them down and increased fuel consumption When the boat left New York, it had 686 gallons of fuel on board and the boat was getting about 1.2 nautical miles per gallon — not good enough to make the crossing. However, by the halfway mark — the point of no return — the FloScan showed mileage had increased to 1.6 nautical miles per gallons, which was enough to make it the rest of the way. The FloScan Fuel Management System costs about $700 per engine and might even be a good refit project for some DIY boaters. FlosCan.CoM LB

ask the expert | by Elizabeth Altick
Fuel 101 Blake Rampy, national sales manager for Biobor, explains how to choose the right fuel additives for your engine. LB: Why do boaters need fuel additives? Rampy: The marine environment and operating conditions, coupled with today’s evolving fuels, introduce numerous issues unique to boaters. Additives play an integral role in preventing a host of problems, including phase separation and corrosion that are a growing concern with ethanolblended gasoline. Maintaining a clean engine and fuel system allows for optimum performance and protection in both gas and diesel engines.
CONTACT Biobor Fuel Additives 910 Rankin Rd. Houston, TX 77073 281-820-5674
LB: What percentage of boaters use additives? Rampy: I don’t know if I can put an accurate number on this, but it’s growing substantially. The mindset is shifting from only using an additive during layup periods, to an “every fill-up” approach. Ethanol-blended gasoline and ultra-low-sulphur diesel (ULSD) warrant the use of a comprehensive additive year-round. Many mechanics and repair shops report up to 70 percent of gasoline engine malfunctions are fuel-related, and diesel engine manufacturers refer to microbial growth as the most common cause of engine shut down. With the correct additive, a few pennies per gallon can prevent potential damage.
BIoBor.com
LB: What damage can occur without additives? Rampy: Both gasoline and diesel fuels present a unique set of potential problems. Ethanol-blended gasoline can hold substantially higher amounts of water, causing phase separation, internal corrosion and possible catastrophic engine failure. Rapid deposit formation can rob engines of efficiency and performance, while degradation can render fuel unusable. Fuel quality is what ultimately decides the performance of your engine, and a comprehensive fuel additive, such as Biobor EB, will combat all of these common issues.
LB: Does diesel fuel have its own set of issues? Rampy: Microbial growth (or diesel bacteria) can quickly contaminate a fuel tank leading to corrosion, plugged filters and ultimately fuel starvation to the engine. Additionally, today’s ULSD lacks much of the lubricity recommended by manufacturers to protect injectors and fuel pumps. An OEM-recommended biocide and lubricity additive such as Biobor JF can provide protection for minimal cost.
Elizabeth Altick specializes in recreational marine, cultural and humaninterest subjects. She was formerly executive editor of a recreational boating magazine.

additive will include corrosion inhibitors, stabilizers to prevent oxidation, a form of fuel system cleaner, and water control. Biocides, such as Biobor JF, are EPA-registered pesticides with chemicals designed to prevent and kill bacteria and fungi that feed on hydrocarbons.
LB: How does a boater decide which brand to use? How do they differ? Rampy: Educate yourself on fuel issues and the additives available to make the best possible decision. Choose a reputable company that conducts industry-standard testing to back product claims and engine OEM recommendations. Many companies make undocumented and false claims. Our company stands out because we have been treating fuel in some of the most fuel-stringent industries in the world, such as commercial and military aviation, since 1965. When you treat fuel at 30,000 feet you have to be confident your products live up to their claims!
LB: If manufacturers make recommendations, what do they base them on? Rampy: Typically, engine manufacturers shy away from recommending specific additives in maintenance and operations manuals. However, most acknowledge the general need for a fuel stabilizer in gasoline and a biocide when microbial growth is present in diesel fuel. Biobor JF is one of the only additives recommended by name in diesel engine and boat manufacturer OEM manuals due to its proven effectiveness and long-term compatibility with so many fuel systems. LB

Grady-White Freedom 375 Dual Console I
t’s a cruel joke that my editor only gave me one page to tell you about the new Grady-White Freedom 375 Dual Console, the latest and largest model from the Greenville, North Carolina-based builder. There’s so much to this boat that I may not be able to do it justice. But I’ll certainly try. This is a great looking boat, from her exciting lines to the blending of materials, colors, accents and piping. And with so much functionality built in, it’s got something for everybody. At the pointy end, it’s a classic bowrider setup — but with panache. Full cushioned seating lines the bow and converts to sun pads for lounging. Two storable tables drop into floor mounts on either side for dining, leaving the centerline clear for access. Side wells house speakers, cup holders and storage. The boat’s clever design incorporates two console cabins. Step down into the well-appointed port cabin with bench seat, wall-mounted table, 19-inch LCD TV with entertainment system, full-length sliding berth, and aft berth. Cherry and holly flooring, wood cabinet, skylight, and cedar closet add a touch of home. Inside the helm console is a VacuFlush head (10 gallon), shower, sink and microwave. These cabins offer privacy, comfort, protection and dry storage as needed.

Grady-White’s exclusive “Air View Squared” hardtop includes overhead rod storage, built-in speakers and lights, storage net, electric sunroof, side curtains, retractable sunshade, and, my personal favorite, a drop down 19-inch LCD TV. Woo-hoo! Wait… there’s more. To port is a large curved settee with table. Chill with the family or stretch out and watch the telly. Across is the well-appointed helm with two-person seat, a dash large enough for multiple display screens and components, and optional Yamaha Helm Master control system. Behind the helm seat is a kitchen/wet bar fitted with a fridge, grill, sink and storage. And did I mention the 8kW diesel generator? “In developing the Freedom 375, we listened to dealer input and to our customer families — including members of our growing Grady-White Clubs — who are the inspiration for each and every one of our boats, and the result is this ultimate multifunction boat,” says Shelley Tubaugh, Grady-White vice president of marketing. There’s much more to the Freedom 375, but I’m afraid I’ve run out of room. Check it out for yourself and see why the Freedom 375 gives you the freedom to boat however you like. LB

rom a fine boatbuilder in Finland to the shores of our Great Lakes, the Minor Offshore 28 lets you get the most out of boating. Founded and run by the Sarin family at their production facility in Kokkola, Finland, Minor Offshore vessels are touted as “the all season boat.” With a stout design including high freeboard forward, walk-around access, safety rails and enclosed house, the 28 can handle the not-so-nice days with aplomb. Powering the Offshore 28 with the standard single or optional twin Volvo Penta diesel inboards up to 370 hp, you can easily attain speeds up to 40 knots. At 25 knots, fuel burn is about 8 gallons an hour. Not bad. Two double cabins sleep two persons each. An enclosed head includes sink and shower. The compact galley has a two-burner stove, hot/cold water sink and a fridge. Get away with the kids for a weekend or invite adult guests for some extended cruising. Large windows provide great visibility for navigation and docking, as well as taking in the scenic vistas. Open

The starboard side helm is well appointed, with room for chartplotter display, radios, ancillary controls and more. Roomy enough for twin helm seats, there’s also a U-shaped settee aft with foldout table for dining. Externally, you know the Offshore 28 was styled for enjoyment and safety. A wide, single-level deck makes access easy. It’s also great when fishing and battling the “big one” that drags you around the boat. Relax on the forward deck seat or on the bench seats in the aft cockpit. For a cool dip or to enjoy water toys, there’s a large swim platform with ladder. High gunnels, railings and grab rails keeps a hand on the boat from any location. Originally from Sweden, Carl Skarne, owner of Skarne Marine in Milford, Connecticut, is the exclusive U.S. importer for the Minor Offshore line. “Minor Offshore boats are built for tough northern Scandinavian conditions, which are very similar to the Great Lakes conditions,” Skarne says, adding that the Offshore 28 is “highly versatile and can be used for cruising, fishing, commuting or simply enjoying a day on the water.” Take advantage of the rich boating heritage from the northern corner of the world with the Minor Offshore 28. orthy of the crown jewels and equally rightful on the high throne, the Princess V57, hailing from England, is as royal as the ruling family. With stylish good looks and sumptuous accommodations fit for a king (or queen), Princess Yachts has again set the bar not only for itself, but for the rest of the world. From the outside, it’s a wonder that Princess can get so much into 57 feet of hull and deck. But upon closer scrutiny, it becomes apparent that with the hull’s generous freeboard and associated high sheer line, there must be something special to this yacht. And there is. Boarding dockside is easy thanks to the large swim platform, nicely appointed in teak. Up three steps on either side to the aft deck, and it’s easy to see why the V57 attracts

attention. A U-shaped settee to port offers comfort with well-padded cushions and a center split teak table that flips open. Feed the masses from the aft deck starboard wetbar center. Adorned with white counters and black cabinetry, the gas hinged top opens to reveal a slightly recessed electric grill and sink. Any spills or wetness are neatly contained in the area and do not spill onto the teak decking. An under-counter storage cabinet and drop-in fridge fit out the space. Along with a starboard aft gate that’s recessed into the side structure and out of the way when not in use, Princess also includes an area for stowage of a canister life raft. Cruising comfort Style and design take a step up (if that’s possible) as one steps into the salon. High-gloss cherry wood cabinetry is dramatic against the dark wood flooring and dark leather inlays and trim. The end cabinets house a fridge, ice maker and shelves for storage. To center, this cabinet has several pull-out drawers for storing crystal and cocktail glassware. The drawers’ and doors’ backsides are finished to the same perfect level as the cabinets. The Royals would be proud. Relax on the port side U-shaped settee, which is up a step and offers a view from any position, thanks to large side windows and a triple-paned glass aft door. Optional is a table to accompany the settee, but that could potentially interfere with viewing the 32-inch LED TV housed across the way, in the rear of the cabinets. Also, it’s easier to navigate the settee without having to slide around the table for a seat. Visibility is key from the helm, and there’s plenty to look at sitting in the twin helm seats. The dash is simple, esthetically pleasing with a Volvo Penta engine monitor, Simrad electronics, analog/digital gauges, and a radio. A Simrad chartplotter display is in front of the second helm (also called the navigator’s seat). Throttle and tab controls are located on an armrest to the right, along with a Xenta joystick control. The Xenta system is a plug-and-play option with many Princess yachts. The V57 can get up to 36 knots wide open, thanks to the dual Volvo Penta D13 900 hp engines. These are big blocks and take a fair amount of space in the engine room. Separ fuel filters are mounted ahead of the engines on the forward bulkhead. Access is a bit cozy, so change them when the engine is cold. Oh, and this is a straight drive setup. No pods or IPS here. When cruising the inland waterways, the V57 glided effortlessly, with little noise and no jerky motion when put in/out of gear. Mentioned earlier was the high freeboard and sheer, letting the eye tell the brain that most of this yacht sits high. But with its sleek style, you might think that there’s no head room and the staterooms are made for

short people. Nay, nay. Princess collaborated with famed naval architect Bernard Olesinski to work with the internal team and designed the interior to sit deeper in the hull, maximizing usage of space below the deck while making living accommodations as roomy as possible. Down from the salon is a U-shaped galley to port. The open interior design allows ambient light to flood in from the large windshield and sunroof skylights. Here, meal preparation is accomplished thanks to the Sharp convection microwave oven, Siemens four-burner cooktop, large stainless sink with cutting board insert, Avonite counters, and half-height Waeco fridge freezer (full-sized fridge is optional, but steals counter space).
Royal accommodations Princess maximizes storage space effectively throughout. The outer counter of the galley is a cabinet, with individual spaces for all the china. Next to the galley is a door that leads to the master kingdom, I mean stateroom. I’ve seen many staterooms in my day, but this one beckons that you come in, sit down and relax. It’s full beam, and although designed under the salon, there’s great headroom. Being so low in the hull, the floor features multi-level plateaus instead of steps that conform to the taper of the hull. Gracing the stateroom are hull-side windows with a loveseat to port and a chest of drawers to starboard. While underway, lounging on the loveseat gives a sea-level view of the world outside. And with these windows being so large, they add to the overall non-claustrophobic feel of the vessel. Princess uses a combination of high-gloss wood, light materials on the panels and carpets, and metallic trim to accentuate the volume and details. Large closet, 32-inch LED flat screen TV and vanity table finish the stateroom off nicely. Classy in her own right, the master head has a Perrin & Rowe basin sink, Dometic head and separate shower stall. In the forepeak is the VIP stateroom. The center island berth is full; no cut corners here. The use of high-gloss
wood and light-colored materials blends with the overall décor. Side curtains close out the opening portholes. Or, open them and the overhead hatch for fresh air. An ensuite head uses the same types of fixtures as the master and also has a stall shower. The magic continues with a third stateroom, designed as upper/lower berths and perfect for kids. Don’t be dismayed at the lack of a dining table in the salon. Princess built in a dinette/ lounge on the lower deck between the fore and third staterooms. It’s a perfect place to grab a bite from the galley or to keep the kids occupied while the adults party like Prince Harry above. Exterior access is effortless and convenient. Three steps up from the aft deck is the side deck, plenty wide with grab rails on the house and high railing all the way to the peak.
A real head-turner Often times during a sea trial, there’s just the operator and me. This day, James Nobel, vice president and marketing director of Viking Sport Cruisers was on the controls, so that gave me the opportunity to handle lines, tend to fenders and act as guest. In order for me to properly portray the yacht at hand, I need to “operate” her like anyone would do, which is more than just getting some wheel time. I was comfortable with the yacht’s safety features, crossing over the forward sun pad and thankful for the nonskid surfaces. What a surprise when I turned around and Noble had opened the sunroof. WOW! It’s huge. And with three skylights built in, light flows when open or closed. Princess Yachts and Viking Yachts of New Gretna, New Jersey, have enjoyed a relationship for nearly two decades. The Healey family, Viking’s founders, felt strongly that the workmanship, focus and philosophy of Princess closely mirrored its own and formed a partnership to bring the Princess line of luxury cruising yachts to the U.S. Fast forward to today, and although Princess markets its own brand, it’s still Viking Sport Cruisers that holds the sole distributorship for the U.S., Canada, Central America and the Caribbean. When asked about the demographics of his market, Nobel explained that this is a great owner/operator yacht. “It’s an express boat, but with plenty of living space,” he says. “We’re thinking for the baby boomer or couples.” Using a resin infusion process for hull and parts layup, Princess Yachts finds that this offers the best opportunity to eliminate air voids in the glass. Solid glass is found below the waterline, while PVC coring is present above. Want to bring toys on board? There’s ample storage in the lazarette and room for an 11-foot tender in the garage. Mounts for a Jetski or other personal watercraft can be added to the swim platform. Impressed by the comfort, surprised by her versatility and enamored by her style, the Princess V57 is definitely worth the look. If you pass up this opportunity, well then, off with your head. LB

Carved out of Wood The charming Upstate New York town of Clayton is home to North America’s largest and most impressive collection of antique and classic boats. by Kim Lunman
T
he St. Lawrence River town of Clayton, New York overlooking the Thousand Islands has a claim to fame other than being a world-famous tourism destination known as a summer playground for the rich and famous more than a century ago. Today, Clayton is considered North America’s capital of classic wooden boats. Wealthy business barons came here during the Gilded Age and built castles for cottages while gliding along these very waters aboard lavish steam yachts. In modern times, tour boats cruise along storied stretches of this archipelago with names like Millionaire’s Row. While steam yachts are no longer a common sight in the Thousand Islands, antique wooden boats still grace the river as idyllic icons of the region’s floating history. That’s largely due to Clayton’s Antique Boat Museum (abm.org), which boasts an astonishing 320 boats in its collection. That includes everything from St. Lawrence skiffs to the world’s largest runabout, Pardon Me, a 48-foot mahogany vessel with a 1800 horsepower engine that can hit 70 miles an hour. Many of the vessels have whimsical names like Snail, Miss Behave and Gadfly. Snail, owned by Life Saver candy scion Edward J. Nobel, was anything but slow. The millionaire offered to pay anyone $1,000 if they could beat the Gar Wood speedster in a race. The boat was worth $10,000 when it was built in 1927. It was considered a fortune in those days and had a WWII aircraft engine that could reach speeds of 50 miles per hour.

“Every classic wooden boat has a story,” says Fritz Hager, ABM executive director. “People preserve them, love them and are addicted to them.” The not-so-slow Snail is just one of these boats with a story to tell — one that is beautifully preserved at ABM. The exhibits include restored Chris-Crafts, Hackers, Hutchinsons, Gar Woods and Lymans, as well as canoes and skiffs. “We unabashedly call ourselves the ‘Premier Freshwater Nautical Museum in North America,’” says Hager.
Preserving history International tourists visiting the Thousand Islands aboard tour boats learn about the region’s classic wooden boats at the museum, along with seasoned antique boat enthusiasts who make ABM’s annual boat show and auction an annual summer pilgrimage. “We see people coming here from all over the world,” Hager says. Waldorf Astoria hotel owner George C. Boldt’s opulent 110-foot houseboat is also on display at the museum. Boldt famously built Boldt Castle on Heart Island in the Thousand Islands, but halted construction when his wife, Louise, died in 1904. The long-vacant castle was restored by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority and is now the region’s most popular tourist attraction. La Duchesse is a castle of a houseboat. room, this is a floating palace — and a popular exhibit at the museum. Boldt had an impressive fleet including three steam yachts and racing boats called P.D.Q.s (which stands for Pretty Damn Quick). La Duchesse was donated to the museum by the late Andrew McNally of Chicago. Classic boat lovers can put ABM’s 50th annual Antique Boat Show & Auction on their calendars for next summer, August 1-10, 2014. It will be an extra-long event jampacked with festivities to commemorate the show’s Golden Anniversary. The boat show originally started in 1967, when the outfit was known as the Antique Boat Auxiliary of the 1000 Islands Museum. It was officially renamed the Antique Boat Museum in 1971. Exhibits at ABM are eclectic and make all things on the water engaging and informative. Where else can you step off a millionaire’s houseboat and take in an exhibit about historic and epic paddling expeditions? “This is the beginning of recreational boating in the Western world,” says museum curator Emmett Smith.
Classic boat HQ The Antique Boat Museum is the Town of Clayton’s major tourist attraction. Visitors can row a skiff for free and “Ride the River” aboard some of the facility’s fleet of classic wooden boats including Teal, Zipper and Miss Thousand Islands for a fee. It’s an incredible way to see the Thousand Islands up close and experience the vintage vessels the way they were made to be experienced: On the water. Clayton truly is home to antique boat lovers. The international headquarters for The Antique and Classic Boat Society (ACBS), the largest society in the world dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of antique and classic boats, is based here. Its offices are located just up the street from ABM. Cornwall Brothers Museum in nearby Alexandria Bay, New York also features exhibits on classic boats of the Thousand Islands. Alexandria Bay was home to legendary Hutchinson boatbuilders and also had the nation’s largest Gar Wood dealership at one time. “This is the hot spot for wooden boats,” says Peter Mellon, president of Antique Boat America/Antique Boat Canada, the largest international broker of classic antique boats with a showroom based in Clayton. It’s no accident that the business, which brokers boats from around the world, calls Clayton home. The showroom features one of the largest collections of antique boats in the U.S., says Mellon, with more than 100 of the vintage vessels on display. Mellon, a summer resident of the Thousand Islands on Wellesley Island, makes Ottawa his home in the winter. His company brokers classic wooden boats internationally online (antiqueboatamerica.com and antiqueboatcanada.com) and ships boats around the globe. He also charters classic wooden boat rides aboard a custom-built, 42-foot triple cockpit
mahogany Hacker-Craft named Pardon Me Too, which takes visitors on tours and is used for weddings on Singer Castle on Dark Island, Heart Island’s Boldt Castle and elsewhere. Clayton’s charming downtown on the aptly-named River Drive overlooks the waterfront and the islands, including Calumet Island, which was originally built and owned by American tobacco tycoon Charles Emery as one of the first “castles” in the region. Though it burned down, the water tower can be seen from restaurant patios that also overlook passing ships in the channel. Merchants cater to the town’s river theme. Bella’s restaurant even serves sandwiches named after the islands and area boathouses The landmark shop Corbin’s River Heritage offers up the region’s ripe history with books and historic photographs, while Michael Ringer’s St. Lawrence Gallery sells paintings by Ringer of the islands and tranquil scenes of classic wooden boats that visitors will get to see or experience for themselves off the shores of Clayton: A floating world. ts velvety nights seethed with pirates. Its waterfront districts were a colorful riot of lawlessness, from the teeming brothels,
dance halls and saloons to the professional thieves and con men prowling unfriendly alleys. It saw gunfire, siege and starvation during wartime, and its muddy belly still holds the sad remains of countless ships sunk in its often treacherous waters.
One of America’s seaboards? One of its Great Lakes, perhaps? Try the Mississippi River, before and during the Civil War. The fourth-longest river in the world at 2,530 miles, this legendary waterway once separated the settled eastern half of the fledgling United States from the western frontier. Its watershed still drains all or parts of 31 states between the Rocky and Appalachian mountains as the river makes its way from its source in the Minnesota northwoods to its massive delta, which spills into the Gulf of Mexico. Most Americans associate the Mighty Mississippi with the literary works of Mark Twain, which endure more than a century after the writer’s death. Our fascination with life in the river valley largely stems from childhood readings of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” and we assume that Twain captured what late 19th century life was like when he wrote the books in 1876 and 1884, respectively. In doing so, we make the same mistake as Twain’s contemporaries. When “Huckleberry Finn” was published, a book critic for The Harvard Courant said the book had a freshness about it — that Twain “had given us a portrait of a people, of a geographical region, of a life that is new in the world.”

Steamboats revolutionized travel on the Mississippi in the early 19th century. Thanks to modern cruise lines on the river, contemporary travelers can experience a taste of steamboating’s golden age.
But according to author Lee Sandlin, that critic, his readers and the generations to come would get Twain backward. “The last thing he was trying to do was describe the life of the Mississippi River Valley as something ‘new in the world,’” Sandlin writes in “Wicked River: The Mississippi When It Last Ran Wild,” published in October 2011. “His fascination — obsession, really — was with the Mississippi as it had been in the past. “His Mississippi books are works of memory, even of archaeology,” he continues. “They’re about the world of the river valley as it had been a generation earlier, before the Civil War. That was… the great age of the Mississippi River culture. It had been a strange and fascinating time. From somewhere in the 1810s until the Civil War, a new society had rapidly sprouted and come to a fantastic height in the river valley: A world of its own, growing on and around the sprawling length of the Mississippi, with its own culture and its own language and its own unspoken rules.”
That has “ haunted me, how people were more callous about life and death, and how little care they took with other people. Their lives were so hard. You couldn’t even get invested in your own children, because you could lose them so easily.
Wild origins The Mississippi River of the first half of the 19th century was a wild, weird, dangerous place, a tortured waterscape of ice floes, submerged hazards, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, plagues and fire. Every imaginable form of boat plied its sprawling length, and it was home to every form of human habitation, from wilderness outposts to gracious Southern cities, and from tent revival “camp meetings” to Mardi Gras bacchanalia. Although the 21st century river is now a tamed network of dams, levees and dredged channels, its earlier incarnation still runs wild through Sandlin’s gripping “Wicked River.” The author says he was drawn to the Mississippi as a child, and he has been in its grip ever since. “If you grow up in the Midwest, you’re always aware of the Mississippi as a presence,” says Sandlin, who still makes his home in the Chicago area. “For me, it was an abstract idea. That’s what happened with Mark Twain; when he started writing, he hadn’t been on the river in decades. So it also was abstract for him.”

As Sandlin began his research, he learned that there had been a veritable library of books written about the Mississippi that dated back to the early 1800s. Many titles already were lost by the time Twain wrote his 1883 memoir, “Life on the Mississippi.” Fortunately, Sandlin was able to find quite a few; as he followed in Twain’s footsteps, he quickly realized that he had resources the Victorian writer did not. “Google Books,” Sandlin enthuses with a laugh. “They’ve been archiving books that are in the public domain, and they’re accessible, although you do have to develop a certain skill set to find things. Most of the memoirs that became my source material for ‘Wicked River’ haven’t been reprinted in 150 years.” Sandlin spent a year reading the source material and researching details, then he devoted approximately a year and a half to writing the manuscript. He says he didn’t operate with any preconceived framework in mind. “I just wanted to immerse myself in the material,” he explains. “The book grew out of the research.” The book focuses on the river’s middle and southern stretches, from St. Louis to Memphis to Natchez to New Orleans. Readers will meet pirates, priests, lumbermen, and genteel travelers on the grand American tour. They’ll learn about the “Great Shakes” — the catastrophic 1811-12 New Madrid earthquakes that liquified the earth, created temporary waterfalls and caused the river to flow backward for several hours. They’ll explore remnants of the vanished Mound Builder culture. They’ll read about the 1863 siege of Vicksburg during the Civil War. They’ll discover the Sultana, a paddlewheel steamboat that exploded in 1865, killing more than 1,500 people; it remains the worst maritime disaster in U.S. history. Why was the northern stretch of river not equally represented? Sandlin says he had to use the available source material. “The northern river area was sparsely settled,” he explains. “It was mostly mines and lumber camps; travelers generally didn’t go up that far. I got a few fascinating glimpses, but I had to follow the material. I found that 1810 to the Civil War was the richest period, although there are a lot of interesting things on either side that had to be left out, like the birth of the blues.”
A history unaccounted for Sandlin says he wrote the book with the reader in mind. “I would ask myself, ‘What would I want to read about?’” he explains. “Although the book does have an underlying shape, I wanted it to feel like the river feels — you’re on a journey, and you don’t know what’s coming next.” While some stories are interesting, surprising and even cool, he notes, others are deeply disturbing. One example is

”
the rumored slave uprising that led to a violent rash of lynchings throughout the Deep South. “There are terrible things, but you just can’t look away,” he says. “Twain made it seem like life on the Mississippi was an Eden, which was true in a way; but it also was true that it was unbelievably brutal. That has haunted me, how people were more callous about life and death, and how little care they took with other people. Their lives were so hard. You couldn’t even get invested in your own children, because you could lose them so easily.” Certain details will stand out in readers’ minds, particularly if U.S. history books and classes have not previously brought them to light. Sandlin says that many people have expressed surprise at the reports of the orgiastic camp meetings and at the vagaries of the slave trade, including the active market for “fancy girls.” These beautiful, light-skinned girls and women were bought and sold as sex slaves. “You won’t find the fancy girls in the standard histories at all,” Sandlin observes. “Nor do many people know about the Mound Builder culture. I’m amazed at how much of our history is dropping off the map.” He noted that there is a prevailing sense that nothing happens in the Midwest, and that even from a historical perspective, all the action was elsewhere. Nothing could be further from the truth. “As I worked on the book, my feeling about the river got much deeper, and I was amazed at how rich the history of the Midwest really is,” Sandlin says. “The depth of our history is extraordinary, and people just aren’t aware of it.” In the epilogue of “Wicked River,” a sense of longing creeps into the text. The Mighty Mississippi is undoubtedly forever changed; it is “shabby, over-regulated, tamed.” Waterfront communities languish, lonely vessels ply long, empty stretches once thronging with watercraft, and the great world-traveling Mississippi panoramas are missing or destroyed. Sandlin writes that perhaps, one day, “an ancient wall might be knocked down, and a scrap of painted canvas might come to light: A glimpse of wide water, a burning steamboat, a lone human figure posed on a distant bluff

The Battle of Vicksburg Forever Stamp (left) was issued in May 2013 and is a reproduction of an 1863 lithograph by Currier & Ives titled “Admiral Porter’s Fleet Running the Rebel Blockade of the Mississippi at Vicksburg, April 16th, 1863.” — an authentic souvenir of the wicked river, the way it had been in the old times.” Sandlin says he shares readers’ feeling of sadness and loss when considering the vanished wild river and its distinctive, vibrant culture. Although the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has done studies on restoring the Mississippi to its natural state, the author says the idea is impractical. As F. Scott Fitzgerald’s narrator Nick Carraway told the implacable Jay Gatsby, “You can’t repeat the past.” “You can’t go back,” Sandlin says. ‘The more vivid history is, the more poignantly aware I am that it’s out of reach.” LB
About the author Lee Sandlin also is the author of “The Distancers: An American Memoir,” a 150-year history of a family and small house in Edwardsville, Illinois; “Saving His Life,” an account of the extraordinary life and bewildering illness of his father-in-law, Russian immigrant Nick Cherniavsky; and “Storm Kings: The Untold History of America’s First Tornado Chasers,” published earlier this year. elcome to the first port in southwest Michigan: New Buffalo, featuring the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail, fabulous farm-to-fork cuisine, cultural treasures and a world-class casino. Add in a combination of watersports, hiking and golf, among other fun recreational activities, and you’ve discovered the perfect summer/fall beach town for all your boating pleasures! This is Harbor Country, eight great towns centered around one great lake, which runs about 15 miles north along Lake Michigan and 6 miles inland. Often called the “Gold Coast” because of its breathtaking sunsets, New Buffalo is one of those rare beach towns that really make you feel like you’re a part of the community — even if you’re just visiting. Captain Wessel Whittaker of Buffalo, New York ran his ship aground on the Lake Michigan coastline in 1834. He fell in love with the landscape, describing it as “a natural harbor surrounded by dunes and tall trees, where a river flowed from the surrounding woodlands.” Whittaker knew a good harbor when he saw one. He returned a year later, founding the town and calling it “New Buffalo.” What really makes New Buffalo special for boaters is the convenience; you can literally dock and walk. Almost everything is close by the marina. Even the Amtrak Station that can take you to Union Station in Chicago or Michigan City, Indiana is but a few steps away.

Hit the beach or the town? Beach vs. town: That all depends on your appetite. If you’re looking for boating or beach gear, Sweetwater Boating Supplies has it all. From rope, bottom paint and cleaners to suits, flip-flops and more, they’ll even blow up your inflatables. Headquartered at Oselka Marina is Basas Marine. In business for 40 years, their main facility is a full-service dealership in Bolingbrook, Illinois. Complete with ship’s store and parts department for all major brands, Basas offers everything for your boating needs. If you’re thinking of selling or are in the market for a new boat, check out their inventory at BasasMariNe.coM. Stop for sandwiches at David’s Deli and be sure to try the specialty of the house, one of three Reuben sandwiches; there’s even a fourth for breakfast. Take advantage of the free WIFI while you’re sipping a cup of Intelligentsia coffee. Everything is made from scratch, so it’s all fresh and delicious. “Many people make New Buffalo their docking home,” commented David’s Deli co-owner Emma Brewster. “And every year, that population keeps on growing.” Another wonderful place is the Grateful Diner. Stop for breakfast and lunch as well fresh and fresh-frozen meals, home-baked muffins, cookies and cupcakes. Recommended is their Banana Custard French Toast with house-made French bread, bananas, toasted coconut, hazelnuts and maple syrup. Their egg scrambles are equally outstanding. What makes Grateful Diner unique is that everything is locally sourced and cooked by Chef Sam Luna, formerly of Mesa Luna in Three Oaks. With its funky Grateful Dead décor and outstanding menu, this is a place you’ll want to visit repeatedly, so you can become acquainted with all of its delightful culinary creations.

One of the most popular restaurants and watering holes in New Buffalo is The Stray Dog. This waterfront restaurant continues to pay homage to its friend Jack, who was once a stray dog himself. The Jack Fund donates proceeds to various animal charities from the sale of t-shirts. For casual, upscale dining with spectacular waterfront views, head to Bentwood Tavern inside the Marina Grand Resort. Boaters and locals alike enjoy what local celebrity Chef Jenny Drilon calls “artisan comfort cuisine.” The menu boasts wood-fired pizza, fresh fish, steaks and more, sourced from farm to table (whenever possible). After dinner, relax over a glass of wine on the rooftop deck and watch the fabulous sunsets.
Drier’s Meat Market
Country accommodations The charming Lake Country Inn resembles a southern plantation but was really built in 2005, so it boasts all the contemporary amenities such as cable TV, free WIFI, HD internet TV and high-speed internet. Of course, continental breakfast is served every morning. It’s also located right in the middle of downtown, so it’s the perfect place to stay. Lake Country Inn owner and avid boater Dr. Mark Traill feels that New Buffalo is the best part of Lake Michigan. “The water is better here because it’s lower and warmer,” he says. “From New Buffalo, with smooth, calm water, you can be at Chicago’s Monroe Harbor in an hour.”

Four Winds Casino is one of those places that just keeps getting bigger and better, with outstanding entertainment venues, a new Hard Rock Café and 4-star hotel, and, of course, all kinds of gaming. Complimentary shuttle service meets every incoming train at the Amtrak Station (half a block from the marina). For those of you ready to hit the links, head over to Whittaker Woods Golf Club. It offers an 18-hole championship public course with a par of 72 described as a “great, playable golf course for everyone.” Squeak in some more exercise by climbing the dunes at Warren Dunes State Park, which rise some 240 feet above the shoreline. It’s worth the challenge, because on a clear day you can see the Chicago skyline from the top of Tower Hill. Harbor Country also offers myriad hiking trails and guided nature walks in the Harbert Road Nature Preserve and Warren Woods. Michigan blueberries are the absolute best! Come pick your own at Big Head Farm in New Buffalo or Blueberry Patch in Sawyer.
SUPing revolution The newest recreation on the Great Lakes is stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). “This is really an ancient art, which gained popularity in Hawaii in the 60s,” says Third Coast Surf Shop owner Ryan Gerard. Unlike surfing, a stand-up paddler doesn’t need to ride a wave. All that’s required is to paddle on open waters — in harbors, lakes or rivers. “We rent stand-up paddleboards on the beach and at the Galien River and teach you how to do it,” Gerard says. “With virtually no current, a good paddler can fly. “For the beginner, the flat water is perfect for learning,” he explains. “Many of our boaters learn the sport, love it and then buy a paddleboard to keep on the boat. “Stand-up paddling lets you see both the lake and the coastline from a new perspective… and it’s a blast!” Gerard maintains. The shop also rents kayaks, offers lessons and guided tours, and sells an extensive line of apparel and accessories. Interestingly, the shop’s name came from the 17th century French explorers who dubbed the Great Lakes “The Third Coast.”
Three Oaks: A hidden gem Roughly 8 miles from New Buffalo is a little community that’s big on heart: Three Oaks. Within a few short blocks you’ll find Drier’s Meat Market, Vicker’s Theater, Journeyman Distillery and Acorn Theater. Celebrating its 100th year, Drier’s Meat Market is on the National Register of Historic Places. Walk inside and you’ll think you’ve stepped back in time. With all of the original

Resources equipment, some of which is still in use today, it’s certainly something to show the kids. There’s even a script from the series “Dallas,” signed by star Larry Hagman, who played infamous oil tycoon J.R. Ewing, as part of the memorabilia. Now comes the tough part: What to bring back? Choose from steaks, smoked meats, hot dogs, sausages, bacon, cheeses and relishes. But no worries; whatever you decide, they’ll be happy to freezer-pack it for you before you head back to the boat. Right down the street is Vicker’s Theatre, also celebrating more than 100 years in business. Here you can see a movie and talk about it afterwards, making it a cultural experience that will “open your minds, enrich your lives and entertain your spirit,” says owner Judy Scully. Just down the road is Journeyman Distillery, which offers tours of the distillery and a chance to sample some of the handcrafted organic whiskey and spirits being produced. Right next door, Acorn Theatre has revitalized the area with a diverse range of live entertainment, musical Sunday brunch, open mic opportunities, traditional theater series, and more. “We get talent from New York to Hollywood,” says co-owner David Fink. “Performers like this venue because it affords them a very intimate space with the audience,” adds Kim Clark, who also co-owns the theater with Fink. Be sure to peruse the wine shop inside the theater.
Heard it through the grapevine Considered the “Napa Valley of the Midwest,” the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail is like bottles of bubbly waiting to be uncorked. There are more than a dozen wineries and tasting rooms in the area, providing sampling, cooking classes and vintage celebrations. This quadrant of Michigan is known for its grapes, with soil and water conditions mimicking the great Loire Valley in France. Many of the Michigan winemakers studied in Europe and brought back these secrets to their own vineyards One of the most fun (and safe) ways to sample the wines is to tour with companies that whisk you from one winery to another. Fruitful Vines will pick you up at the Amtrak Station and take you around to four wineries either by Vino Coach or Wine Wagon. Gravity, in Baroda, is one of the newest wineries on the trail, and certainly one of the most contemporary. Their approach to wine tasting is a little different; with their flights, each wine is paired with a gourmet chocolate or cheese. The oldest winery in the area is Lemon Creek in Berrien Springs. They’ve been producing wines since 1855 and are known for producing the first Cabernet Sauvignon in the state. Experience it first hand at Lemon Creek’s annual Harvest Festival Saturday, September 7.

Domaine Berrien Cellars, also in Berrien Springs, focuses on handcrafted, estate-grown and bottled wine, best known for its dry reds and Rhone varietals. “We were the first winery in Michigan to grow and vinify Syrah,” says master winemaker Wally Mauer. “Our winemaking philosophy is very minimalist and old-world — we let the grapes express themselves in a varietally-correct manner. “There’s a real sense of community among the wineries,” Mauer adds. “We work together to support each other and everyone benefits.”

ituated in a prime spot on beautiful Bay Harbor Lake, this magnificent home complete with attached boathouse enjoys easy access to Little Traverse Bay and beyond. “This spot is centrally located,” says listing agent Dannielle Coursey Ottimer, with Harbor Sotheby’s International Realty. “It’s an ideal location to experience all that Lake Michigan has to offer.” Built in 2005, the home is nestled in a gated community within Bay Harbor and boasts some 6,500 square feet, five bedrooms and five-and-a-half baths — plus a built-in boathouse. The boathouse can accommodate a 50-foot boat or several smaller boats, making it perfect for a collector. “It has many windows, allowing natural light to pour in, and also for viewing of the boats from the inside rooms,” says Coursey Ottimer. “There’s also a gentleman’s area for sitting and reading, relaxing with friends or having a cigar.” A custom dock outside can easily accommodate an 80-foot boat, and there’s a large deck nearby, perfect for dining alfresco.

Plenty of bells and whistles can be found inside, too, from the marble and granite found throughout, to the elevator that runs between the main level and upper level, to the guest apartment with separate entrance above the five-vehicle garage (four cars and one GEM car). The gourmet kitchen boasts three dishwashers, a butler’s pantry and a wine bar. The master retreat is a true oasis, with a private deck, fireplace, white marble bath with steam shower, Jacuzzi tub and its own washer and dryer. Outside, the traditional cottage-style home features professionally landscaped grounds that are easy to maintain. And it’s all found within the master planned community of Bay Harbor, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2014. “There’s boutique shopping, fabulous dining, golf, tennis, a yacht club, a hotel and swimming pools,” she says. “It encompasses all that living directly on the water has to offer: Beautiful sunsets, enjoying family and friends, and being able to hop in your boat and go.” LB

ucked into a protected harbor in Michigan’s Les Cheneaux Islands, the Upper Peninsula’s Hessel Marina is a welcoming spot for boaters from near and far. “My wife, Pam, and I have enjoyed staying at Hessel Marina for the past several years,” says Dan Corbat of Midland, Michigan. “The major reason we keep coming back is the quality of the crew. They are simply outstanding.” “Our marina staff is very knowledgeable, courteous and friendly,” says longtime harbormaster Gail Dreisbach. “I’ll give people my car to tour around.” Located between St. Ignace and Drummond Island, and just 11 miles northeast of Mackinac Island, the marina — the only public marina in the Les Cheneaux area — is in a great spot for exploring the area by boat. When Hessel Marina opened in 1970, all that existed was the large seawall. Over the years, the non-power dock and courtesy dock were added, as were 24 slips. Slips are available for transient boaters, but reservations are recommended. While Hessel Marina doesn’t offer gas or repair services

onsite, these things are readily available at E.J. Mertaugh Boat Works, located in the same harbor. There’s plenty to do in the area, too. Downtown Hessel, just steps away, boasts a few eateries, while the larger Cedarville, about 4 miles east, offers even more. There are two golf courses in the area, plus a casino and two museums. Hessel Beach, complete with picnic tables and a swimming area, is just a short walk away. “People love to be here for the birds and wildlife,” says Dreisbach, noting that it’s not uncommon to see bald eagles, hawks, loons, blue herons, mink, muskrat, river otter and more. There are events going on constantly in the summer months. The marina plays host to the Antique Wooden Boat Show each year in August — one of the largest in-water antique boat shows in the country.“We plan on having 150 antique wooden boats in our harbor every year,” Dreisbach says. Ultimately, though, it all comes back to that top-notch service. “We’re very proud of our marina,” she says. “We say, ‘There’s no hassle at Hessel.’” LB

Introducing the cPhone A marine-specific twist on Apple’s iPhone (sort-of).
W
e’ve become a world addicted to the rapid evolution of cell phones. What began as an actual telephone handset secured atop a 5-pound battery pack and requiring a tall whip antenna slowly began shrinking down into something smaller, but still requiring a permanent installation in a car, boat or wherever. Our trawler had a full-sized handset mounted on a bulkhead inside the v-berth. It required an external antenna up on the flybridge to gain limited ship-to-shore coverage. Fast-forward to present day, and I don’t have to tell you what’s happened to the cell phone market. The latest phones are flat, powerful computers that use touch screens to surf the internet, tweet, make movies, view movies, and, oh yes, even make phone calls! A popular feature of Apple iPhone models was the introduction of Siri. She was a computerized voice, always on duty inside the phone, ready to do your bidding with a sound that’s intelligently soothing. (I’ve since heard rumors that Siri has been retired, but as I was writing this, she was still alive and well, around to inspire this clever idea of mine.) I was almost seduced into buying an iPhone — until I realized that for all its features, it offered nothing special for Great Lakes boaters. Sure, it could connect you to other phones; but you still had to do all the talking in order to get your message or quest handled. That’s why I’m introducing the radical new cPhone — that’s “C,” as if to sound like “sea.” In addition to all the established and expected cell phone features, my cPhone will be totally marinized. This process will include floatation and waterproofing to a depth of 300 feet, just in case the phone goes down with the ship, and impact testing to survive a drop from a flybridge to the deck below — or, in the case of a sailboat, from the spreaders to the deck. Its only impact limitation would be if used as a docking fender. The cPhone would cover the full range of marine frequencies in addition to regular cell phone functions. Goodbye to fixed installations, external antennae and marine handhelds; the cPhone does it all… and does it well! Nautical range would be estimated at approximately 50 miles. Its range of frequencies would include GPS navigation capability, eliminating the need for separate instrumentation, and a sharp focus camera range of 18 miles, which is the generally accepted distance to the horizon. The cPhone would be capable of photographing identifiable buoy numbers within that range. And last, but far from least, my phone features would

No discerning boater should be without a cPhone!
include a marine upgrade from the Siri concept known as “Nepi,” in honor of the God Neptune, legendary king of the seas. To put all these features into perspective, imagine yourself anchored offshore, sipping a cool one while out tubing. Nepi is there with you as you enter the day’s activities into your digital log. You’ve been amusing yourself with a game of Warfare. After tweeting a few thoughts for the day, you ask Nepi for the estimated cruising time to your next port of call. Nepi is then told to reserve a slip at your destination marina — preferably with a portside tie — followed by confirming a table for four at the leading restaurant in town. Task completed, you raise your crew on the cPhone permanently mounted in your nav station and have them haul your tube back to the swim platform, ready to raise anchor for the next phase of your cruise. This miracle instrument will be available sometime in the near future… as soon as I finish working out a few bugs in the design and, more importantly, settle my lawsuit with Apple! LB
