Sunflowers in bloom

his time of year nature puts on its own explosive displays of color. Sunflower fans will have the opportunity again this summer to view and photograph remarkable sunflower displays at Columbia Bottom Conservation Area in Spanish Lake. Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) staff has planted multiple sunflower plots again this year. Showy sunflower fields have been an annual tradition at Columbia Bottom Conservation Area. MDC staff have been planting sunflowers for years as part of their management for mourning doves. The area is known for dove hunting each September. The large flowers supply seeds that entice the birds, and their lofty stalks create cover for MDC photo the hunters who pursue them. Sunflowers also benefit a wide variety of other birds and pollinators. They lure plenty of photographers, too. MDC work crews have planted extra sunflower stands in addition to the regular dove management fields again this year. These viewing fields are close to and easily spotted from the road and intended to provide convenient access for taking photos. MDC crews have also staggered the timing of the plantings to spread their blooming periods out over a longer period. Visitors should be able to see sunflowers in bloom somewhere on the area from early July through the middle of August—depending on weather conditions. Sunflowers usually take about 60 days from planting to flowering. The Columbia Bottom team typically plants about 14 fields throughout the 4,300-acre area in early May as part of the dove management regimen. At the peak of their 10day blooming period they decorate the area with vibrant bursts of gold. The additional plots in the fields intended for viewing are planted later in May so that their blooming is timed to occur through mid-August. The common sunflower (Helianthus annulus) is an extremely large and showy member from the same plant family as daisies. The impressive height and brilliant yellow rays of a single sunflower are a striking sight. Uniform rows of hundreds can be positively mesmerizing. Sunflower fields have always been a popular draw for sight-seers, nature buffs, and 14 VACATION NEWS

photographers. MDC reminds visitors not to pick the sunflowers. Vehicles should park in designated parking lots or on the shoulders and avoid blocking roadways or gates. MDC also reminds visitors to pack out any items they bring with them for the consideration of others. Commercial Photography & Videography Professional photographers should note that MDC has expanded opportunities for commercial photography and filming on conservation areas. Photographers can now utilize MDC areas for commercial use by obtaining a Commercial Photography Permit for $100 annually. A Commercial Videography Permit is now available for all commercial videography on MDC areas with an associated fee of $500 per day. For more information, see https://short.mdc.mo.gov/Zrr. Columbia Bottom Conservation Area is located at 801 Strodtman Road. The area can be reached by taking the Riverview Drive Exit from I-270 and travelling north approximately three miles. Columbia Bottom is open every day from a half hour before sunrise until a half hour past sunset. Those in St. Charles County might also want to see the sunflower plantings on Weldon Spring Conservation Area. MDC staff have planted sunflowers for dove management along the road to the Missouri River boat ramp on the area. These flowers should bloom around late July, depending on growing conditions. Summer hobbies

S

ummer is the season of R&R. When the mercury rises, who can resist a backyard hammock or the sound of waves lapping against a picturesque shoreline? The relaxing nature of summer makes it the perfect season to revisit old hobbies or pick up new ones. Hobbies can run the gamut from the complex to the simple, but when choosing a habit to pick up this summer, individuals may want to look to these somewhat relaxing endeavors that are tailor-made for warm days and nights. • Reading: Individuals who have long wanted to read more should know that they’re not alone. A 2019 survey commissioned by the reading subscription service Scribd and conducted by The Harris Poll found that 35 percent of respondents wished they could read more. Finding time to read more may be difficult during spring, summer and fall, when parents must contend with their own hectic schedules as well as their children’s. Even individuals without children or empty nesters may find it difficult to carve out time to read in a typical day. But people who aspire to read more can take a book to the beach or out on the deck on a warm afternoon or evening. Leave the smartphone inside so you can relax and read distraction-free. • Gardening: Gardening is another hobby that coordinates well with a summertime vibe. Gardening gets people outdoors, giving them a chance to soak up some summer sun and engage in an activity that’s rewarding but not too physically demanding. One of the biggest attractions of gardening is that it can be enjoyed by people of all ages. That makes it an ideal hobby for busy families to enjoy together when their schedules slow down in the summer. It’s also a great way for adults to spend quality time with aging parents. • Photography: Summer seascapes and landscapes are awe-inspiring, making this an ideal time of year to take up photography. Novices can begin by utilizing their smartphone cameras to take snapshots of local landscapes. Once the skill of pointing and clicking has been honed, amateur photogs can graduate to more expensive and precise cameras. • Sailing/boating: Though it might involve a little more physical activity than reading, sailing and/or boating is an ideal summertime activity. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that nearly 40 percent of the United States population lives in a coastal area, making boating and sailing an accessible hobby for a significant percentage of Americans. Even those who live far away from the ocean undoubtedly live close to a river or lake. What better way to enjoy warm summer afternoons than on a boat? The best summertime hobbies are often those that help people take the relaxing nature of summer to the next level. July 29 - August 11, 2022

DAY TRIP by Vicki Wood

Warsaw Wine Country I The Benton County Wine Trail is becoming popular and is only 30 miles from the Lake.

s the heat getting you down this summer? A day trip to an inside destination is in order, and a wine trail visit is the way to go to keep cool! The Benton County Wine Trail is becoming pretty well known as Missouri Wine Trails go. Warsaw is only located about 30 miles from Lake of the Ozarks, traveling the backroads from US 7 at Greeview to Warsaw. Each April the Benton County Community Foundation hosts a wine stroll since the area has become so popular to wine lovers. The annual event benefits community projects and non-profits and has been combined in recent years with an art walk that includes local wine businesses. First visiting Benton Ridge Winery and Campground, it’s a place that you can fully relax in the backwoods and have lodging if you choose to stay. An impressive undertaking for retired firefighter Gene Gould, he’s not resting during his post work careeer. Benton Ridge Winery serves Missouri made wines like St. James and Adam Puchta. They also offer all the accompanying favorites such as cheese and meat trays, and oven fired pizza in the bistro. Wine can be enjoyed by the bottle or glass. In this hot weather, a wine slushy or frozen might be more desirable, however. Two large nearby ponds with adjoining nature trails make a great place to relax when the sun goes down and the day’s heat melts away. Benton Ridge Winery and Campground is located at: 25518 Fitzpatrick Ave, Warsaw. While in town at Warsaw, the best choice for eats is found downtown at The Yellow Deli. This funky café features fresh, farm to table food with a few unexpected treats. First, it’s a stellar stop for cold drinks. Artisan tea blends over ice is offered with many choices. But the smooth, cold banana milk is a refreshing pick me up. The chilled salmon salad sandwich is served on ciabatta bread made by the deli daily. The salmon is trucked in fresh from their family business in Alaska. Its worth a visit to The Yellow Deli just to view the furnishings. Tin ceilings and rustic booth design offer a place to huddle down on a hot summer afternoon. Located in the former Osage Hotel, this historic stop is a gem when traveling to Warsaw. The Yellow Deli is located at 145 W Main Street, Warsaw. Strangely enough, they are open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. Only closed Friday at 4 p.m. through Sunday at noon. So don’t hesitate with a midnight snack craving, The Yellow Deli is open. Outside of town

Escape the highways to a backroad that runs between Cole Camp and Sedalia on the route to Warsaw. From Lake of the Ozarks, Highway 135 N takes travelers through Stover. Venture up Highway 135 N just west of Stover to Wildlife Ridge Winery. 40 VACATION NEWS

DAY TRIP The elegant gate hints at what lies just past the adjoining cattle fields. A quaint little lake is nestled up to the wooden building that houses Wildlife Ridge Winery. A Missouri grown winery, the wine is produced at Les Bougois Winery in Rocheport, but the owners of Wildlife Ridge subcontract the press rooms to create their own wine for Wildlife Ridge. Primitive Olde Crow and Winery

Jump across Hwy 65 to Clinton and discover a winery a bit off of the official Benton County Wine Trail in Henry County. Primitive Olde Crow & Winery was opened in 2018. You can find a wide array of vintage antiques, home decor, upscale resale clothing, accessories, freshly ground coffee, and jarred goods in their retail section. Brick oven pizzas, ice cream, and homemade fudge are also made at Primitive Olde Crow Winery at Clinton. In addition to Primitive Old Crow Wine, they are a guest outlet for an outstanding wine from Hermann well known throughout the state, the award winning Adam Puchta vintages. With the boutique in house, you can sip and shop to your hearts content with every visit. It’s a great girls day out trip! They host a vintage junk market in the spring and fall and a bluegrass festival in October.

Primitive Olde Crow Winery on Facebook The Primitive Olde Crow Winery in Clinton is hosting Winestock Aug. 20 from 5:30-11:30 p.m. A variety of artists will be playing music. Cost is $10 at the door. The venue hosts a number of special events all year. Coming up is: Fall Junkfest, Sept. 10; Barn Jam Rock N Roll, Sept. 18; Fall Car and Truck Show, Sept. 24.
