A piece of the Netherlands

Day Trippin’ possibilities in St. Louis are endless. It would be unfair to narrow down to the top four or five favorites. The whole town is full of history.

Bevo Mill is another great historical neigh borhood with immigrant origins. After falling into relative extinction for a number of years, the neighborhood in south St. Louis was revitalized in the early 1990s by a group of Bosnian and Croatian war refugees. Gravois Road and Gra vois Creek play a big part in this neighborhood, showing evidence of French influence.

But Bevo Mill’s greatest attraction after which the neighborhood was named, was built by August Busch, the original owner of Anheuser-Busch. Bevo Mill Hall, adorned with a windmill, was created by Busch after Prohibition to promote a future in America of German-style beer halls,

which leaned toward the lesser potent drinks of beer and light wine.

The definition of the word Bevo is a non-alcoholic malt beverage, or near beer, brewed by Anheuser-Busch in the early 20th Century. The Deutsche Wirtschaft or beer hall at Gravois and Morganford Roads is built with stone from his Grant’s Farm south of St. Louis. He told the newspapers in 1916 that there would be no bar in the establishment -- it would be a high-class café with all drinks served at tables.

Although Busch only spent $200,000 to build Bevo Mill, he followed with a $3 million plant to produce the “temper ance” drink that would be served at his drinking hall. Bevo, the beverage, was marketed as a “soft drink” which comes from the Slavic word for beer. The near beer turned into a big hit for the Busch family in the early 1920s when Bevo

Bevo Mill is a Dutch neighborhood located in south St. Louis. A 60-foot windmill and local beer are the highlights of this stop. Das Bevo on Facebook
12 VACATION NEWS September 23 - October 6, 2022 DAY TRIP

DAY TRIP

was produced at the rate of more than five mil lion cases per year. The motorized windmill of the establishment ran regard less of wind or weather welcoming “light drink ers” in the city with a setting described as a “country club,” with full orches tra playing in the background and a large open garden in the back of the hall for dining and dancing. The menu was elegant, full of beef and seafood. German fare was pep pered to be served in the ornate, great halls of the establishment.

Today, Bevo Mill has been turned into “Das Bevo,” and the original 60-foot-tall windmill can still be viewed which August Busch, Jr., had constructed by experts from the Netherlands. In 1959, the wooden blades were deemed a hazard and replaced by aluminum ones. A $1.5 million renovation by the new owners, Pat and Carol Schuchards brought the great halls back to life for another generation to enjoy. Das Bevo is primarily an event venue these days, but the owners have not forgotten its history.

Das Bevo still focuses on the beer. They have a public beer garden open nightly, and Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cultural diversity is what the Bevo Mill neighborhood is known for. The Bosnian and Croation refugee influx in the 1990s made sure of that. The culture can be found in the food of Bevo Mill, particularly the Bosnian influence. Bakers and coffee shops showcase food that has the world calling the area “Little Bosnia.” J’s Pitaria is a good place to start. Hand-pulled fresh every morning, pitas, baklava, and spit roasted kebabs line the old-world menu.

Sana Bakery is another food lover’s stop, but make sure to go early. The rich Bosnian bread usually sells out by noon.

Golden Grains Bakery includes a market, and these specialties are stuffed with fresh specialty beef which is prepared down the street at Mesnica Pehlan, the Bosnian Butcher.

It’s an exciting feeling being a foreigner in the midst of St. Louis. Fall into one of the dive bar coffee shops for some thick, strong Bosnian coffee. You will be welcomed, but you will still feel you are in another country.

6 ways to improve your putting skills

Golfrequires mastery of a wide array of skills. Many novice players focus on improving skills related to their swings. Yet they shouldn’t overlook the impor tance of improving their short games as well.

In golf, short game refers to the golf shots golfers must make when they’re near or on the green. According to Golf Distillery, a golf play information and tips site, shots like bunker shots, chips and putts are part of the short game. Im proving these skills can go a long way toward bettering one’s game.

1. Learn “green-reading” techniques. According to a Golf Magazine-sponsored study through Pinehurst Golf Academy, 65 percent of golfers under-read the break on a typical putt. Incorrect reads can add to many lost strokes. Reading the green involves determining the correct slope and distance. Golfers who take depth-perception tests and continually practice their skills at reading both the distance and the slope can improve their putts.

2. Change perspective. Different putts require different perspectives in order to assess both distance and slope, ac cording to Todd Sones Impact Golf Schools. If the putt is downhill, Sones suggests reading it from behind the hole. If the putt is uphill, read it from behind the ball.

3. Practice consistent putter travel distance. While the total length of a putt stroke depends on the length of the putt, many golf instructors recommend consistency with the distance the putter head travels. Keep the same distance on the back stroke as on the foward stroke. This will help cre ate a nice, even roll. Most beginners tend to short their back strokes and increase their forward strokes, resulting in less ball control.

4. Focus on an imaginary channel. When putting, imagine a three- or four-inch channel from the ball to the hole. Rather than staring at the ball, golfers can track their eyes down that imaginary line, suggests the experts at Golf Digest. Keeping a simpler focus rather than overthinking things can improve putting.

5. Keep a steady head. Instead of following the ball with one’s eyes, a golfer should hold the focus on the start of the putt to foster a more steady head.

6. Change ball placement. Try moving to position the ball just forward of the center of the stance. This helps the putter make contact at the right moment to achieve the slight lift needed for a successful putt.

Practicing at home or with a golf instructor is a good way to improve putting skills. A strong short game can be the key to improving your overall game.

Giving back to those who served for our freedom is the theme behind Quilts of Valor. The recipients come from nominations submitted to and by the guild mem bers.

Quilts of Valor is a national organization with a mission “to c over service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.” The quilts need t o meet certain requirements and are registered with the organization. The guild started presenting these labors of love in 2017 and has been presenting about eight quilts per year in a ceremony held in November (except in 2020 due to COVID).

The 25 members of the Ozark Hills Quilt Guild prepare these bri lliant quilts for Quilts of Valor and for other charities including making quilts for families with new Habitat for Humanity homes.

At the show, purchase a raffle ticket to be entered to win a qu ilt. Tickets are $1/each or six for $5. Browse the gift boutique and quilters corner for bargains on merchandise a nd materials.

Outside the box

Thinkoutside the box are words urg ing people to see problems with fresh, bright eyes. For Julia Jameson Barton, artist in residence at Artful-Elements, her own Laurie studio, those words are just a starting point. She believes in living outside the box so that she can bring her artistic visions to life.

Where All is Resident Barton’s studio in Laurie is Artful-Elements. A tour proves she is an artist living outside the box. While some artists work exclusively in one medium or another, Barton prefers to embrace all the possibilities of canvas, acrylic, resins, glass, beads, jewelry, clay, and wood. Thus, when asked what her favorite me dium is, she answers “all” She has even added 21stcentury materials as well. Using a 3D printer, she trans forms her own sketches and

photographs into textured, intricate sculptures.

A studio tour also reveals Baron’s primary inspiration: nature. One piece celebrates Missouri’s state bird and tree. On wood fencing, she cap tured a bluebird on a flow ering dogwood branch for art celebrating her Missouri home. “My Slice of the Lake” is a resin sculpture showing the water’s color, rock, and branches. This piece inspired a commission for the Big Spring’s clean-up on the Cur rent River. She will produce a comparable piece to com memorate that annual event held in the fall.

See a Need. Fill a Need. Sometimes Barton’s artis tic vision requires materials unavailable to her so she develops them. Her motto is “see a need, fill a need.”

Two in the trademark pipe line are Fusion Film and Jazzy Glass. The first, Fusion Film,

My Slice of the Lake by Julia Jameson Barton.

THE ARTS

adds texture and depth to everyday objects such as jewelry, ink pens, butterflies, and flowers. Fusion Film catches the light like the finest opals do and transforms ordinary pieces into extraordinary ones.

Jazzy Glass is another of her innovations. It is safety glass in the colors of nature and has used it to create geodes, Christmas trees, and ocean waves, each for The Juliart, an Artful-Elements series on YouTube where viewers can watch as projects move step-by-step from raw materials to com pleted art. Her tips and suggestions are easy to follow. She also provides ideas to personalize each piece.

Sneak-a-Peek Events

For those reluctant to shop or even search online, Sneak-a-Peek events is an idea that grew from an observation and letter Barton created as a teen. At the age of 17 Barton was fond of a television program titled “Aleene’s Creative Living.” The program showed viewers how to use new products for crafts and art, but those products were not sold in local stores. Thinking outside the box and re fusing to accept limits, she wrote directly to Aleene’s, asking the company to con sider the heart of heartlands — places with smaller populations often overlooked in favor of bigger markets. She let Aleene’s know how far local artists and crafters travel to procure the products featured and assured the company if her peers had access to those products, they would deliver honest reviews Aleene’s could use.

Someone at Aleene’s was convinced. Soon after penning the letter, Barton received cartons of product to test and share. Now a couple of decades later, many suppliers send her new and innovative products not available locally. She shares these with Sneak-a-Peek participants who have re served a spot.

Art All Around the Lake

Barton is a founding member of the Lake of the Ozarks Visual Arts Organization. Members of this new 501c3 hope to install art all around the Lake area. Members know how many lanes and roads lead not just to the water’s edge, but also to artists working with fiber, paint, wood, and metal. The organi zation would like to “build awareness for the arts,” awareness of all the talent right here at home.

One idea is to collaborate with municipalities and the Missouri’s Department of Transportation to install sculpture around the Lake. Another is an annual Best Dam En Plein Air

Art Festival featuring area artists painting in the open air for their own delight and the delight of on lookers. The 2021 Best Dam plein air festival was a great success; the second is set for August 2022.

Giving Back

Barton’s family showed her the joy found in giving back, and she continues to give, notably to children who deserve opportu nities to create. She also believes in supporting U. S. troops who have sacrificed for us all. She dedicates time and art to The Healing Box Project, a non-profit that pro vides guitars and lessons to veterans. In past years, she has donated a larger-than-life guitar for the annual June fundraiser at Fish and Company where Healing Box Project found Dave Dunklee performs.

A Place for Art

Artful-Elements is a place for Sneak-a-Peeks, for lessons, and for projects. It is most often the place where Barton cre ates. It is well-stocked with Jazzy Glass, fusion film, paints, res ins, glues, stones, and branches — whatever could be used to bring a design to life. However, if Barton sees a need for ma terials not in stock or even in existence, she will try to fill that need with a few of her many talents. Her goal is for the arts to thrive through her, with her, and for the community.
