MANAGER'S MESSAGE John Nelson Board of Directors, President For the past two months, the world has been experiencing a health crisis that has crippled our communities and caused many of us to significantly change our daily lives. Human beings by their very nature are social individuals. So being asked to social distance is just not in our vocabulary. At the same time, isolation from our social environment can produce its own health concerns. Over the years, we have all experienced different examples of why Lake Quivira is special. I am always truly amazed at how generous our friends and neighbors are when it is needed most. This past month we

saw 141 families contribute to the Quivira Cares Fund to raise over $43,000 in financial support for our staff members who have been working reduced hours due to our facility closures. Lawns are being mowed and gardens prepared by neighbors so that at risk members are not exposed to potentially dangerous conditions. An Easter Bunny happened to arrive just in time to make a lot of our kids continue to believe. Our members are making grocery runs for what seems to be the whole neighborhood. These acts of kindness are what allow our community to shine in a time of crisis. Over the next month, we will be moving into a new normal at Lake Quivira. Due to the efforts of the Board and many member volunteers, I am confident that we will come out of this for the better. This is Lake Quivira at its best.

Your usage of the clubhouse, from ordering carryout meals to purchasing items from the LQ Pantry, has allowed many members of the Lake Quivira team to continue to provide for their own families. Chef Michael Lamping C.E.C. I hope everyone is safe and well. I’m looking forward to having the opportunity this summer to enjoy some activities and dining here at Lake Quivira. In the meantime, I would like to share with you a piece of the process that goes into selecting some of the items featured on our menu. As I make choices as to what beef to serve, the salmon we purchase, or the tomatoes we slice for the club sandwiches,

due in part to the fact that the designation had become more of a brand and less of a guarantee of quality. I was introduced to E3 Meat Co. this past year and realized that this product was what I wanted to be featuring at Lake Quivira. E3 Meat Company is a small 6-generation ranch outside of Fort Scott, KS. Their focus is on the quality and well being of their herds. They operate as an all-natural farm with no antibiotics, steroids or hormones ever. Their cattle eat an all-natural vegetarian diet with lots of room to roam. In addition, part of their profits go directly to supporting combat warriors and fighting human trafficking.

the first thing I look at is the quality of the product along with the supplier’s story. Is their story local, organic, fresh? I pride

GOLF COURSE

Brad Lackey Grounds Manager & Course Superintendent Dear Members, On the course we have been busy during this unprecedented time. The obvious center of our attention has been trying to keep up with our rough mowing. Once again, springtime in Kansas City has allowed the rough to come out of dormancy, thick and lush and when the weather warmed up it took off on its spring growth spurt. Although it may not seem like it, we are actually getting around the course 2 to 3 times per week in an attempt to keep it in tip top shape. While you may be cursing it this time of year, please remember that it sets us up for a great summer when the rough is healthy during the spring. A growth regulator was applied last week to help slow the vertical growth of the plant down, while allowing it to push its rooting system down into the soil. The greens are healing nicely since our aerification 3 weeks ago. It is now time to start dialing them in for the season with the cultural practices necessary to produce quality putting surfaces. These include venting, verticutting, topdressing, brooming and rolling. The driving range indoor practice facility is progressing nicely. The concrete work

18

around the building, attic insulation, interior electrical fixtures, and painting will all be complete by early next week. The exterior stone work and interior flooring will be the next steps towards the completion of yet another great amenity to our community. We will be installing some in house irrigation, a walking path to the building and cool season sodding around the facility once all the trades are cleared. Another area of focus has been #13 fairway. We are repurposing some of the zoysia at the front of the fairway to utilize around the course in other weak areas. The eastside of the fairway is to have a burm and intercept drain installed at the base of hill in the native grass. Then to recover from the major winter kill that happened the previous winter, we will level out the low lying areas and install around a ½ acre of zoysia sod. The contractor will hopefully be starting on their portion of the prep work at the beginning of May. Weather permitting this project should be wrapped up within a week or two. Finally, this Friday Harbour Construction will begin the milling process of resurfacing the entrance and hill leading up to #1 tee, halfway house and #10 tee. After milling the existing surface down 2 inches, they will be replacing it with a beautiful smooth new drive. Traffic will be diverted accordingly with their work, so watch for signs and cones.

RACQUETS

Graham Battle Racquets Sports Director April has been an interesting month at the courts. With the CoVid-19 outbreak, all organized tennis activities have been postponed until the clear is given.

Although clinics, lessons, and events have been unable to be held, the courts have been busy with play. The nice spring weather has been beneficial for play, with members anxious to get out on the courts after months of poor weather over the winter. With an optimistic outlook we are hoping to get back to normal activity in late May to early June and enjoy the wonderful summer months at LQ! With the hope of

COMMUNITY NEWS

Pet Registration Announcement Regretfully, the Pet Immunization Clinic was cancelled for this year. We were hopeful we might be able to reschedule it, but with the extension of the Stay at Home Orders, we were unable to do so. Because of this, during the April 6th Council Meeting, the Governing Body passed Resolution No. 138 extending the pet registration date by 30 days, from May 1st to June 1st. This allows time, once the orders are lifted, to get immunizations at your vet’s office and register your dog(s). Information about registration and the registration form can be found at www.cityoflakequivira.org under the Resident’s tab in the drop down menu.

Fred Braun Day Fred Braun Day has been postponed. We will reschedule it in the fall along with a large item pick up day. The City and Q-Inc. are working together to re-calendar events to prevent double booking dates. Rescheduled dates will be posted via various outlets including Q-News and the City’s website soon.

Other News from the City of Lake Quivira The yard waste dumpster area was found in disarray recently with limbs and debris all over the ground. The Mayor, along with several resident’s, took time out of their weekend to clean the area up, only to find it a mess again within days. This was very disappointing to say the least. Please remember the dumpsters are a convenience. We all pride ourselves in the beauty of our community. Please be responsible when utilizing the dumpsters. If you take yard waste to the dumpers, please clean up any overflow. If everyone does their part, it will make a big difference for all of us. Lake Quivira has been recognized as a Tree City for the 25th year in a row. In honor of this, we will be planting three new trees in the fall. More information will be provided once we have a date scheduled for the planting. The 1985 GMC Firetruck was sold on April 23rd to an individual out of Topeka. We were sad to see it go, but we know it will live a happy life in its new home situated on a farm in rural Kansas.
