MANAGER'S MESSAGE Dean Lytton COO / General Manager

Dear Members, Another eventful month and never a dull moment in our community. We hosted several successful events in August, including the LQ Masters and the Pontoon Crawl, as well as outside events, including St. James Academy and Catholic Charities Golf Tournaments. I enjoyed making my way around the course for the LQ Masters and helping our staff with the Pontoon Crawl. It’s exciting in a year that is far from normal to see our members enjoying traditional events despite some required changes. Unfortunately, due to a positive COVID test, we paused clubhouse dining service the last week of August. I had many of you reach out to me asking about our protocols regarding COVID and how we handle instances like these. I am always happy to reach out personally when questions arise, but this is also a good time to remind members of the protocols we have in place for our staff: Temperature checks take place prior to every shift for all staff members. All staff are required to wear masks indoors and when not able to socially distance outdoors. Sanitizer is provided and staff members are encouraged to wash hands frequently. If staff members have any symptoms such as fever, chills, runny nose, sore throat, headache, or the loss of sense of taste/smell – we ask that they notify department head immediately. Cleaning and disinfecting work areas take place daily. For anyone who is potentially exposed to COVID, once we are notified, we implement contact tracing and work with Health Department officials on protocols for possible quarantine. As schools and universities start regionally, the challenges we face in managing LQCC in the face of COVID will not get any easier. Regardless, we will continue to do everything we can to keep our staff and members safe and provide updates in a timely manner should any further pause in operations be needed. Thank you for choosing Lake Quivira Country Club! Dean Lytton, CONTINUED... Finally, I would like to take this time to thank John Nelson for his work and dedication to the Lake Quivira Community over the past few years. I was only able to work with John a short time before his resignation, but I am fully aware of his knowledge and contributions to this community. The reasons for John’s resignation are unfortunate, but I am committed as COO/General Manager to help create a culture whereby our Members, Board of Directors, Committees, and Q, Inc. staff can work through our successes and challenges in a constructive and positive manner. We will miss John’s knowledge and leadership but wish John and Larie nothing but success in their next adventure. 5

MEMBERSHIP Julie Deane, Fitness & Social Member Julie lives in western Shawnee with her son Ben and daughter Ella. Originally from New Mexico, she graduated from the University of Missouri and relocated to the Kansas City area after college. She wanted to find a lake experience close to home and she is excited to join Lake Quivira for all the various ways to meet new people – activities, clubs, and events. She is excited about the new community center and feels LQ has everything she was seeking for herself and kids. She heads the human resources department at Kansas City University Medical School and has been in that field for 20 years. Son, Ben is 13 and plays football, likes to ride his bike and play video games. Daughter, Ella is 11 and enjoys volleyball, going to the pool, hanging with friends, and baking. The family has spent a lot of time over the years at the Lake of the Ozarks where Julie’s parents and brother have homes and the kids spend time boating and riding jet skis with their cousins. Their dog Bogey joins in the fun. Julies likes pickleball and wants to learn tennis. She also enjoys happy hours, good food and taking friends out for meals. When she relaxes with the kids they play air hockey and Pop-A-Shot. Welcome to the Lake, Julie, Ben and Ella! Article written by: Aline Zimmer

MEMBERSHIP Aaron & Lauren Fouts, Jr. Country Club Members Lauren learned to golf early in life – her dad was the assistant pro at LQ years ago, and her grandparents were LQ members. So when the Fouts family began looking for a country club where she could golf, it was logical to look at LQ. Aaron loves to boat and fish and the lake/golf course combination was hard to resist. Their kids Harper, 5, and Sammy, 2, have grown up with a pool in the backyard and love to swim. The family’s golden retriever, Ellie, is also a huge swimmer. She spends six or seven hours over the course of a weekend in the pool and will be excited to swim off the boat at the lake. Lauren is an account executive at Locton and is currently working remotely. Aaron is responsible for quality control and technical sales at Holliday Sand and Gravel. He travels to sand and rock quarries over a wide territory. Their very social kids have no playmates in their neighborhood and are excited to now socialize on the beach and plan to enroll in Junior Golf. Lauren, who played golf at Kansas State University, is delighted to be out on the golf course. The family likes to travel, root for the Royals, and spend time with friends. Their favorite game is Old Maid because Harper giggles when she gets the old maid card and won’t let anyone pick it from her hand – a guaranteed loss for her and a win for the rest of the family, although Harper views it differently. Welcome to the Lake, Aaron, Lauren, Harper and Sammy! Article written by: Aline Zimmer 7

KITCHEN

Michael Lamping Executive Chef, CEC It's been a pleasure... As most of you know, after 7 great years as your executive chef, I decided it is time for a new life experience. Lake Quivira has been my home for the better part of the decade. I can only say thank you for all the memories, friendships and personal growth. As with most careers, as we all grow, we look for the next challenge. That is where I am at this point in my life. When I started as a young apprentice I quickly knew I wanted to be an executive chef of a country club. I worked hard, moved up the ranks, and finally in 2013 my opportunity was presented. Lake Quivira had an opening. At the time I was an excellent cook and was groomed for the position. The only thing I didn't have was the title and a kitchen of my own. When I was hired, the GM at the time wanted a young eager individual who had the passion and the creativity. Mr. John Miller wasn't too concerned about operations experience. He knew if he hired right, with guidance, it would all fall into place. Fast forward 7 years and here I am. My hope is that you as the membership, felt the pieces fit as well as I did; of course not without some missteps along the way! I have been apart of so many weddings, Holiday Bazaars and countless golf events. I have competed in the Culinary Olympics, cooked for some amazing chefs, and most importantly I served the membership of Lake Quivira. These experiences shaped the Chef I am today. As I have progressed over the years I have learned I always need to be challenged. It is that drive that leads me to my next chapter. Words can not describe how grateful and what an honor is has been to be part of an amazing, unquestionably special place a lot of you call home. I wish nothing but the best, I will forever be grateful for my time at LQ. Respectfully Chef Michael P. Lamping C.E.C 11

GOLF COURSE

Brad Lackey Grounds Manager & Course Superintendent September is the time that reminds us of football, shorter days and greens aerification. Greens aerification is planned for the first step in our aerification process to top dress with sand to the greens prior to aerification to protect the putting surface from the weight of the equipment used and to greatly speed up the healing process to allow for a quicker re-open time. The goals of the process are to open up the turf for better oxygen exchange, loosen compaction, promote better root growth, smooth out any surface irregularities and to provide channels for water movement and better nutrient uptake. This is an industry standard process that while it greatly disrupts the putting surfaces for a short term, the benefits outweigh the short term disruption. We apply another top dressing of sand, drag it into the open holes, blow off any excess and then apply a starter fertilizer and micronutrients that are watered in for the plant to uptake and start the recovery process. September also brings us to starting to prepare all zoysia for the fall and winter months. An application of fungicide and potassium are applied to combat large patch and to prepare the plant for the hard winter months. Drainage additions throughout the course will be the next focus on the addenda after aerification. The Quivira grounds maintenance team is ready for the day time high temps to start to fall and see summer come to an end!

Chris Mabry Head Golf Professional Happy September LQ Members! The LQ Golf Genius app will continue to be updated and notifications will be sent via text / email regarding all events and activities happening on the Golf Course. With the amount of everyday play, we would like everyone to PLEASE continue to practice the following Golf Cart Policies‌ If there is a RED flag up in front of the Golf Shop and on the 1st & 10th tees, this means that all carts are restricted to the path that day. If there are no RED flags up, you may enter thru the enter posts, staying only in the fairway, and exit thru the exit posts. Please do not drive your golf cart past the exit posts. Carts are NOT to be driven in the rough unless you hit your tee shot into an adjacent fairway, you may then drive 90 degrees to and from your ball. DO NOT leave Golf Carts in the parking lot by the old driving range. Please park them in front of the Golf Shop after your round. GOLF September Practice Facility Hours and Proper Divot Patterns on Teeing Area Monday : Closed Tuesday & Thursday : 7:30 AM – 6:30 PM Wednesday : 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM Friday & Saturday : 7:00 AM – 6:30 PM Sunday : 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM To maximize the use of grass at the Practice Facility, all Members and Guests are asked to please place your ball at the grassy back edge of your previous divot removing just the necessary portion of grass with each swing. The middle example in the image below (linear divot pattern) is how your pattern should look after 30 swings. A scattered divot pattern removes the most amount of turf because a full divot is removed with every swing. Scattering divots result in the most turf loss and uses up the largest area of a tee stall. As a result, the hitting bays need to be rotated more frequently and often results in an inefficient use of the tee. The linear divot pattern involves placing each shot directly behind the previous divot. In doing so, a linear pattern is created and only a small amount of turf is removed with each swing. This can usually be done for 15 to 20 shots before moving sideways to create a new line of divots. So long as a minimum of 4 inches of live turf is preserved between strips of divots, the turf will recover quickly. Because this divot pattern removes the least amount of turf and promotes quick recovery, it is the preferred method. A concentrated divot pattern removes all turf in a given area. While this approach does not necessarily result in a full-sized divot removed with every swing, by creating a large void in the turf canopy there is little opportunity for timely turf recovery. 20

Board of Directors Recognition and Farewell to John Nelson By: Steve Sestak

Having worked closely with John over the past four years, I wanted to highlight some of the major projects / accomplishments during his term on the Board of Directors. Besides attending virtually every board, committee and City Council meeting, John has devoted countless hours to making Lake Quivira better. Seldom a day went by when you would not see him driving around the lake, parked at a dock site, or at the Quivira, Inc. office working on an issue. It is fair to say that nobody has spent more time over the past four years for the benefit of Lake Quivira. While some of us focused on the “fun things” in the community, John took a particular interest in the less exciting, but equally important; much which had been ignored for many years: Infrastructure Study – back in 2017, he led the project to inventory and prioritize every road and culvert in the community. This was a key part of the Strategic Plan to identify, plan and estimate each area that needs repair / replacement Dock Site Improvements – established more rigorous inspection practices resulting in significant improvement and safety to the shoreline / dock sites Community Cleanup – spent countless hours working with the team to reorganize and clean-up the maintenance yard. Worked with staff to physically clean up and reorganize the area behind the tennis courts and golf maintenance Storm Watcher – the ultimate storm watcher, he was always the guy in the middle of the night opening the spillway. In addition, he led the efforts to install a solar operated monitoring system on the south side of the lake Duck Cove Project – for years, this area struggled with managing the increased volume of storm water leaving many neighbors with water in their basements. John personally led the charge to solve this problem. He secured SMAC funding covering 75% of the cost and oversaw planning and completion of this major storm water improvement project. In this and every project he took on, he put the interests of Quivira, Inc. first CLICK HERE to read the full article. 29
