From the Editor True love – that is what this issue of Capitol Bride magazine is
all about. After all, this is a wedding magazine and where there are weddings, there is sure to be lots of love. As we looked at wedding photo after wedding photo this year, one thing stood out and that is the love between the couples that spend months planning their perfect wedding day. And also the love of their families and friends who stuff invitation envelopes, try on countless bridesmaids dresses, attend bridal shows with the bride-to-be and be there throughout the process to lend a helping hand and a word of encouragement. In the world of NH weddings, we see lots of new trends, but also a continuance of such popular things as barn weddings, tented weddings, bouquets embellished with vintage jewelry, burlap in table linen décor, bistro lights, antiques both distressed and polished and a leaning toward the lushness of Victorian and Gatsby-era weddings. We have called on some of the top NH wedding professionals to put together this issue. From a Victorian-era themed wedding at a country inn to some glorious and personalized weddings in a variety of locations, true love has gone into each and every celebration. The good news for today’s couples is that it is now possible to have the wedding you want – you are not likely to be told “you won’t find that style in NH” or “you will not find the chairs or the linens or the décor you want for your wedding.” You can have it all – from antiques to vintage to modern themed weddings, there are few style barriers these days. We bring true love in all its styles and colors and interpretations to you in Capitol Bride. We hope you gather some inspiration in these pages and that you look to the wedding professionals featured in this issue to help plan your perfect, true love wedding day.

Date of Engagement: December 17th, 2012; Date of Wedding: August 24th, 2013 Wedding location: Gould Hill Farm, Hopkinton, NH
“We chose Gould Hill Farm because it was always a place I associated with my childhood having grown up in Hopkinton, NH. I spent many fall days picking apples and enjoying their warm apple cider over the years. Beyond the sentimental reasons, you can’t beat the view!” says Erin of her late summer wedding. “We truly wanted our wedding to be the blending of our two families,” Erin continues. “To achieve that, we had my uncle, Gil Timm, officiate the wedding. Our two brothers, Will Addis and Don Timm, were our readers and both our Matron of Honor (my sister Jill McCabe) and Best Man (Jeff’s other brother, Andrew Addis) were a part of our immediate families. Beyond that, we asked our families to do a little digging to find old wedding pictures of our grandparents as well as our parents that we framed and had displayed on a table to honor the previous generations and to remember those who couldn’t be with us on that day. We also wanted our day to be relaxed and fun! We had lawn games such as horseshoes, washers and corn hole set up during our cocktail hour. I loved our bluegrass band that played during the ceremony and cocktail hour.” continued on page 12

The Wedding Planner: “Amy Piper of Signature Events was our wedding coordinator and she was a tremenous help! She is spectacular at her job, and she helped to make the planning process far less stressful. Beyond that, Jeff and I had a lot of help and support from both our parents. In particular, my mom, Karen Timm, took on a lot of the planning responsibilities since I lived in Philadelphia.”
Favorite Part of the Day: “The whole day! We loved sharing this day with our entire families!” www.capitolbridemagazine.com

ood food, good music, good friends and loving family were the focus of Kirsten and Steve’s outdoor wedding at the beautiful Kimball Jenkins Estate in Concord, NH. The couple met while both were working for Tidewater Catering seven years ago and they know good food. They are friends with the catering crew, which made it easy to communicate the sort of food they wanted for their big day. Tidewater worked with the couple to design a menu that suited their ideas and taste. “My parents and sister helped us to prep the space,” Kirsten says. Kirsten’s friend Lauren Knowles made the wedding cake. The wonderful array of pies were homemade by Steve and Kirsten, and her grandmother and grandmother’s husband. “We had 12 apple pies as the main dessert. Steve and I both don’t really love cake so we decided to go with pie and used my great-grandmother’s recipe. It was a really special touch and a great way to make memories and pass on a family recipe. I’m a pro at making an apple pie now!” Kirsten laughs. “We also had an assortment of delicious miniature pastries made by Victorian Village Bakery (Mont Vernon, NH).” The tent and linen rentals were provided by the pros at Special Events of New England.

“Steve and I both really wanted a wedding that was customizable to our tastes and personality.”
“We chose Kimball Jenkins Estate in Concord because we loved the idea of having a tented wedding in the yard, but also having the unique Victorian era house to use for an after party. It was great because we had the space all day. We literally were able to dance the night away! It felt like a private haven but was still less than five minutes from the hotel where guests were staying and downtown Concord.” The charming flower chains that hung behind the couple as they exchanged vows was a unique touch. “Kimball Jenkins Estate has a beautiful rustic arbor on the property that I knew we wanted to use as our ceremony location; it just needed a little dressing up. I found a picture on Pinterest of a ceremony backdrop with a veil of strung white lilies. I loved the concept, but knew I wanted to do something a little more budget friendly. I showed my florist and she came up with the idea of doing strung carnations. The result was incredibly beautiful and really romantic! Hannah of Sorella Floral completely exceeded my expectations with all of the flowers!” Kirsten says. The theme was rustic chic and incorporated wood, burlap, antique windows, old family photographs, mason jars, fresh flowers, and café lighting which totally transformed the open air sail cloth tent at night. “We wanted to have continued on page 22 www.capitolbridemagazine.com

as many personal touches as we could to really make it our own special day. A lot of the little details were handmade projects. (The chalk board program, the hand painted windows, photo boxes and photos strung on twine, the thin cuts of tree trunks under the centerpieces, etc). Our color scheme was charcoal grey, navy blue, green and ivory with pops of orange.” Steve is a chef so the menu was something that was really important to the couple. They wanted the food to be a focal point and something guests would talk about for days. Cocktail hour featured signature drinks named after traditional family favorites. Crowd favorites were the butternut squash raviolis and petite steaks; the menu as a whole was fall-themed gourmet cuisine. A candy bar as the favor included family favorites. continued on page 25

The significance of the white guitar? Kirsten explains, “Steve and I are HUGE Dave Matthews Band fans. Together we’ve seen more than 50 shows! There is a song for every moment in life and a story in every song. His music is such a big part of our story that we wanted to incorporate it into our wedding day. Our table names were song names with lyrics on the back of each card. Our first dance was to ‘Steady As We Go’ by Dave Matthews. The guitar was a wedding present from Steve. He gave me Dave’s electric guitar that he used in shows and personalized with a really unique drawing. It was signed by the whole band! BEST GIFT EVER! “Rebecca and Mike of Garone Photography really captured the day perfectly. From candids to cornfields we could not be happier with the photos,” says Kirsten. “The best part of the day was our ‘First Look.’ The pictures show that we actually saw each other before the wedding. It was such a special moment for just the two of us. We were able to take all of our photos before the ceremony and spend an hour together, laughing and really enjoying one another before all the excitement began. We were then able to spend the whole cocktail hour with our guests and not miss a single moment of our wedding day! We recommend this for couples looking to go a little less traditional route.”

Her advice for other couples planning weddings: “I would advise other couples who are the ‘do-it-yourself’ types like Steve and me not to underestimate how much work it takes to pull off an outdoor wedding! Time flies ...you think you have plenty of time to get things done but it sneaks up on you at the last minute. Surround yourself with good friends and family who won’t abandon you if you start to go a little nutty in the weeks leading up to the big day! Enjoy every minute because it truly is the best day of your life, but one that goes by in the blink of an eye. Take a few moments throughout the night to just sit and observe everyone having a blast. It definitely makes it all worth it.”

Some weddings glow with color and exude fun. That was the case with Tiffany and Jay’s big day. “We got engaged on July 8, 2012 on the beach in Cape Cod. I started planning the wedding right away,” Tiffany recalls. “I got some wedding magazines for inspiration and then really started applying my ideas and looking for a perfect spot for the ceremony.” The couple was aiming for an August or September wedding and Tiffany’s mother, sisters and best friend and future sister-inlaws helped her plan and make decisions about the wedding. The color pallet for the wedding was unusual: the colors of a peacock feather which are dark purple, deep blue, green and teal. Tiffany was determined to carry the color scheme through her wedding and with the help of seasoned wedding professionals, she pulled it off successfully. “At times it was difficult having my vendors stay within my color theme. You don’t realize how many different shades of one color there are! The final decisions come down to you, so as long as you know what you want and have a vision in your head then your ideas will come to life,” she says. The ceremony and reception were held at the Atkinson Country Club. “The dinner was buffet style or continued on page 33 www.capitolbridemagazine.com

Tiffany adds, “My advice for future brides would be try to enjoy the process of planning your special day. Rainy Day Plan DIY Wedding

hat do you do when bad weather threatens to destroy your long-planned-for wedding day plans? If you have great friends and family and a creative, let’s-make-it-work spirit, you move the event to an alternate site. That’s what this Concord, NH couple did when rain moved in and put a stop to their outdoor wedding.
(above) The bride’s mother, an artist, created the beautiful sign. Special decor touches such as the vintage table and lit candles on the stage (below) added an otherworldly glow to the ceremony.
(above) The space in Pheonix Hall, downtown Concord, NH. The couple and their friends and family transformed the large room in just a few hours. (below) The hall decorated with yards of tulle, crepe paper flowers, vintage furniture and accessories.

The wedding day, in Karina’s words... Original location and plan for the wedding...
“The wedding was supposed to be on the front porch of our Victorian home with a long walkway and the reception under a tent in the backyard on Memorial Day weekend. In years past late May is temperate, but on our wedding day it was cold, drizzly, and calling for sleet – everything in the tent was wet and windblown. A good friend, wedding guest, and landlord, Mark Ciborowski, called us at 10 o’clock the morning of the wedding and asked if we wanted to move our entire wedding to Phenix Hall, which is a historic theatre in downtown Concord (currently vacant). At first I said Are you nuts? Move my wedding the day of! But as the weather progressed, I thought better of it, called him back, and it was on!”
How long did you have to switch the location and how many people did it take to move the wedding?
“We had from 11 am to 5 pm to move everything, alert guests and vendors, and be ready to go! We put a message on Facebook to let everyone know the wedding was moving – and if anyone could help us it would be much appreciated! The new venue was less than a mile from our home, so people flooded in to help; we had about 20 people in less than an hour. They moved chairs, tables, decorations, including a claw foot bathtub up three stories!”
How did you come up with the theatre decor idea of the flowers, tulle, etc?
“When we first entered the space, it had been used temporarily as a yoga studio, so there was lots of ‘yoga inspired décor’ and instead of removing it all, I thought, let’s cover it! I bought a few hundred yards of tulle and muslin and we strung it up across the room. I had previously made tissue paper poofs, and had mostly cream and gold decorations – so everything was in muted whites and beige. We used the stage as the focal point; we were in good company, since Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln had both spoken on the Phenix Hall Stage. A friend tied back curtains, added flowers, and an antique print of a church, and candles as a backdrop. We strung white lights around which added a muted romantic atmosphere – there were no overhead lights – so we had just table lamps that also contributed to this feeling.”
How long did it take to decorate the room?
“At a certain point I had to leave to get my hair and makeup done; I left the décor in the capable hands of my now husband Ben and our friends – it took probably 3-4 hours to actually decorate – hang the fabric, the stage, and center pieces.” continued on page 37

How did you let your guests know about the change of wedding ceremony and reception location? “We had about 90 guests – we started an Excel document from our invitation list and while I was getting my hair done I was on the phone calling key people who I then asked to call another group of people – like a phone chain. We also posted it to Facebook and hung signs with directions to the new location at our home – the old venue. Only three people went to the wrong location first but quickly realized and made it to Phenix Hall.”
Was it difficult for your caterer to move all the food and dishes to an indoor spot?
“The caterer was actually thrilled that they didn’t have to be outside in the tent, with 45 degrees and wind! There was no kitchen but there was running water in the space, so they adapted very quickly.”
You seem to be a dog lover - how did you incorporate dogs into the wedding?
“We had a very non-traditional wedding and very much made it personal. We didn’t do traditional bridal parties or have the father walk the bride down the aisle, but after my sister, and Ben’s brother walked down the aisle our best friend, Jay walked Peewee, our late Great Dane (seven years old at the time) down the aisle to ‘Islands’ by the XX. Peewee was as much a part of our family as anyone and we couldn’t imagine getting married without her, so we thought it was only appropriate that she be there for our big day. She anxiously waited through the ceremony and as we walked back down and through the crowd – she jumped up on Ben (almost his height at 6’4’’ and gave him a lick) – that was one of the most memorable parts of the evening. She died just a few months later and I still tear up when I see the photos of her there.”

What should brides know if planning a DIY wedding?
“Roll with it – I spent a year planning my wedding and EVERYTHING changed just hours before the wedding – and I think it was more beautiful than I could have planned. I heard from so many people that it was the BEST wedding they had ever been to – it was so genuine – don’t get caught up in what you should do.” What was your favorite part of the day? “My favorite part was when the ceremony was over and we walked out – we stopped behind a curtain of tulle in the back and just had a moment to ourselves. Amazingly the photographer caught it and I have a photo of it!”

Luna Eclipse DJ Services: “Chris was also available to me ALL THE TIME. I was a very...well, controlling bride and a little bit OCD about things and Chris just laughed and rolled with my punches which made my life that much easier.” “Chris was a true professional. Creativity, thoughtfulness, and flexibility are his strong suits. The wedding reception was perfect thanks to Chris.”
