Baseballs, Brides, Maple Syrup and Snowstorms
In this issue, we went out on a limb to bring each bride unique ideas to make her wedding perfect. We began by mulling over how a bride could make her special location just right for the wedding. Then we decided to take it to the limit by finding some spots that would offer BIG CHALLENGES. Why? Because each and every wedding/reception offers challenges. Tented, indoor, in a backyard or a huge reception facility or a barn party, each spot means the couple must PLAN AHEAD to make the location their own. In our search, we chose two very different locations - the Fisher Cats stadium and a sap house/farm. We filled them with bridal styling, leaning heavily on our team of trusted wedding pros to TRANSFORM each spot into a wedding wonderland. We dealt with lugging chairs, tables, linens, gowns, flowers and more up and down stairs, over ball fields, down muddy slopes and through the snow to set up perfect wedding scenes (our sap house photo shoot missed a major late winter snowstorm by just one day and we dodged spring showers on the ball field at our Baseball n Brides shoot). While most brides won’t have these extreme issues to deal with when planning a wedding, we wanted to stress that you can indeed have the wedding you want if you plan ahead. Start with a COLOR or FABRIC PATTERN that you love and build on it - your flowers, table linens, invitations and your gown can reflect your favorite location or colors. If we can offer you any advice, it’s plan ahead. Think about colors, locations and how it will work on the big day. Then have fun putting it all together. Enjoy this issue - it is our third annual CAPITOL BRIDE, and it is full of tips and inspiration photos as well as a representation of the best NH wedding professionals. Best wishes!

Getting the Gown
In today’s world, you see bridal gowns everywhere. Between television shows that feature women hunting for their dream dress and web sites full of beautiful gowns and You Tube runway show clips, the world of wedding gowns is instantly accessible. All those media outlets are fun to view, but when you get right down to it, you are still left with the task (although it’s a delightful one!) of visiting bridal shops to find your dream dress for the wedding day. Don’t start trying on gowns until you’ve answered these important questions: What month/season will the wedding take place? Where will you hold the wedding reception? Keep these things in mind when you start to shop for your gown; you want a gown that will feel right for the time of year (ie: heavy satin for a July tented wedding or a light sleeveless chiffon for a winter wedding won’t look and feel right). Shop early, because it takes four to six months to have a dress fitted; sometimes longer for one with intricate handwork. If you start shopping eight to 12 months in advance, you will have plenty of time to get the dress you really want. If you have never shopped with anyone for a wedding gown, there are some things you need to know. This experience is a bit different from entering a chain store to shop for a new pair of pants. It takes time and a willingness to put yourself into the hands of a good bridal shop consultant to get to the dream gown. Each season brings new trends and styles and colors; start by asking the shop personnel what the latest styles are this year. They will show you gowns in different styles, such as mermaid, ball gown, strapless, etc. Fabrics change each year as well as the style of the gowns. This is a good idea; it will give you an undisturbed block of time to convey your tastes and wishes to the shop personnel and to perhaps show them some styles you like from magazines. With this information, the consultant can then start pulling gowns for you to try on. Caitlin at Inspirations Bridal & Formal Wear says, “So far we are seeing that the fit and flare style is going to continue to be popular. Lighter fabrics like silky satins are becoming popular among our brides for their weight and feel, especially for destination weddings. Flowers, ruffles, and lace accents are seen on many dresses. Fun and flirty hair accessories like flowers and feathers or jeweled hair combs are coupled with veils.” A bit more gown shopping advice: Be openminded and flexible. The shop consultant will be able to translate your preferences into a choice of gowns that best suits your size, coloring and shape. If you feel the consultant is not listening to you, speak up politely. While your body shape might not be perfect for a mermaid style, if that is what you have your heart set on, let the consultant know that is your wish. Whatever style you ultimately choose for your wedding gown, begin your search early to allow time for the best selection. And don’t forget to have fun on this extra-special trek!

Wedding Story - A Chance Meeting Sarah Emberley & Fritz Moeckel

T
here are two stories of how Sarah Emberley and Fritz Moeckel met; the soon-to-be-a-couple met when they passed on the street and said hello. “We really met when we were having dinner at the Barley House in Concord,” says Sarah. ach was dining separately but aware of one another. “We kept running into each other around town. My mother works in Concord and I would sometimes meet her for lunch. I saw Fritz on one occasion and told my mother while pointing him out
that he was the ‘really nice guy I was telling you about.’ ” Sarah decided to introduce herself to this nice man. “I left my mother’s table and went to say hello to Fritz. He asked me out on a first date at that point!” That first date was a trek to Portsmouth. Something clicked right away for Sarah and Fritz, and from that time on they were always together or trying to find time to be together in spite of their busy schedules. (Fritz is an attorney and Sarah is a student and project manager for UNH.) After dating for eight months, Fritz popped the question, which came as a big surprise to Sarah. He proposed on the way to a New Year’s Eve party in Boston. Sarah recalls, “He had the cab driver pull into a spot on Boston Common.” The weather was freezing and Sarah was confused as to why they were stopping until Fritz proposed in front of the Swan Boat pond! Sarah said yes and from that moment on the wedding plans were underway. The engagement of 1 1/2 years allowed the couple ample time to plan the wedding they wanted. “I didn’t have specific ideas on wedding colors, but I knew I wanted a natural setting,” Sarah explains. “Fritz and I spend a lot of time in the mountains and outdoors. I wanted to incorporate that part of us into the wedding.” Sarah planned the wedding with Fritz’s help; she wanted them to figure out and enjoy each step of the process together. She first heard about the Fells in Newbury from a friend. The friend was a member of the Fells and told Sarah how beautiful the spot was. “One day I went to the Fellls and knew instantly it was the spot for our wedding,” Sarah recalls. It would be a tented wedding and Lakes Region Tent and Event set up a large tent in the Fells rose garden area and also supplied flatware, tableware and linens for the wedding reception. Fritz and Sarah’s Wedding Tips
To alleviate any scheduling conflicts the day of the wedding, we would advise hiring a dayof wedding planner. Be organized: Give each vendor an execution plan for the day, so they are all on the same page, and don’t get too stressed about the small things; the details will come together. Further, we would say enjoy the day. Every moment is so special and it goes by too fast. Also for those trying to decide if they should invite children we say DO! They add so much to what the day and event is about, and are usually just so happy to be included.

cont. from pg. 16 “While I did most of the styling and initial planning, Fritz and I definitely both worked on the details,” Sarah adds. “We looked over many invitations, tuxedos, and finalized the guest list, ceremony details and music. I did not want to do these things without him; I needed his input, as this wasn’t my day. It was our day.” The rehearsal dinner was aboard the MV Mt. Sunapee for a dinner cruise. The boat took the wedding party and family around Lake Sunapee at sunset. Sarah recalls, "The roofdeck of the boat was amazing, and the bottom level had tables. We would highly recommend this for a rehearsal dinner and also Appleseed Catering." (The company that catered the rehearsal dinner.) The list included 128 friends and family members. Catering for the reception was by Theresa’s Catering of Henniker and the menu included hors d’oerves, crudités and shrimp cocktail. The salad was roasted beets with goat cheese and pistachios, and the main courses were Beef with Mango, Ginger Salmon with Wasabi Soy dressing, and a delicious Spinach Crepe for a vegetarian option. The cake was equally delicious. Sarah explains, “I had a four-tier butter cream frosted cake with three different kinds of cake. One layer was chocolate with raspberry filling, one was vanilla with summer strawberries, and the third was Red Velvet, my favorite, also with raspberries. The fourth tier was our anniversary cake, and that was also Red Velvet with raspberries. My cake was done by Foothills Restaurant of Warner, whose owner does amazing tasting and looking cakes.” Sarah also praises her florist, Mary Trombley of Lotus Floral Designs. “Mary was right on time, and delivered above and beyond our expectations.” The wedding dress was an Amsale creation and brought high style to the country, outdoor affair. Photos by Corey Garland show the full-length, form-fitting dress that was just right for Sarah. And speaking of the photography, Sarah adds that Corey Garland was always shooting scenes during the day and the photos were just perfect; the images captured the personality of the couple and every detail of the day. The wedding ceremony began at 4:30 pm at the Fells; at 10:30 am the wedding party gathered at a house Sarah’s mother had rented. Hair and makeup styling began at noon. Corey Garland joined the wedding party at the house and captured the fun of the afternoon. The male members of the wedding party had a similar laid-back, fun day at the nearby Rosewood Inn. “There were so many great moments of the wedding day that it is difficult to choose just one,” Sarah replies when asked what her favorite part of her wedding might be. “Being walked down the aisle by my father and stepfather, looking back at all our friends there supporting us, and kissing my husband rank at the top. Also, my five-piece jazz band, and a friend who sang our first song. (Bill Whiteman of Whitesteeple Productions.) The Fells staff, my florist, my photographer, and friends were amazing in ensuring that I was ready, and the site looked perfect.” The honeymoon was in sunny St. Lucia and offered the couple a break to relax after all the months of planning. With a lot of attention to details, the couple had a wedding that echoed their personalities and brought friends and family together for a perfect outdoor day; all this started from a chance meeting in a restaurant!

Wondering what flowers will be best for your wedding? In NH, the seasons offer up extreme weather; does that mean you can't have beautiful flowers in a snowstorm or a summer heat wave? Yes, you can say expert florists! Each season brings flowers that are best bets for your wedding. Summer - Summer weddings offer so many wonderful flowers from which to choose, including daffodils, snapdragons and of course all the popular lilies that brides love for their bouquets. Fall - Popular colors for an autumn wedding include the color of leaves at peak season: deep red, bright yellow, lush burgundy, orange and dark brown. Sunflowers, in bloom in late summer and early fall, are a popular choice because of their beautiful and showy yellow color. Other fall wedding flower options include asters, gladiolas and asters; many florists can use fall gourds, pumpkins and mums. Winter - A NH wedding most often means snow. If you choose a winter wedding, you might have made that choice because you love snow and the neutral background it creates for colorful flowers. Many brides choose to decorate with flowers that are deep red, purple and green. Roses and calla lilies, asters and amaryllis are popular flowers for a winter wedding. Spring - Some brides choose spring weddings when they can get the wedding they want at off-season discounted prices for reception sites and other vendor services. Spring flowers are in bloom and offer a number of choices from orchids, tulips, daises and hyacinth. Bridal bling - don't overlook the bling that can really dress up any bouquet! You can trust your wedding floral design to these wedding professionals; here they share a few tips to help you get the perfect flowers for your wedding. Brad Harrington of Harrington Flowers says, "Be creative with your flowers and your budget. It's fun to be creative with your flowers, cake and other decor but it's even more important to be creative with your budget. There are many things you can do and afford, so don't easily eliminate ideas. For example, you might like to have tall arrangements for your reception, but you know it will not fit into your budget. A great solution is to do impact tables; show your florist your reception floor plan and he/she can suggest where these tall arrangements can go and then use something more economical and creative for the other tables that fit your budget and theme. "In a lot of weddings it works well to put money into just a handful of designs instead of trying to spread it out between all the tables. This really gives a better show." Brad continues, "There are lots of examples like this to cut your cost. Don't be afraid to ask for ideas and get creative. It could save you money and make your special day even more beautiful and affordable than you dreamed. "Notice textures....what attracts you to certain bouquets and flowers. When looking at flowers for your wedding, note not only the colors that you like but the textures as well. Everyone is attracted to different textures. Some people like the look of all smooth flowers as in a bouquet of calla lillies. Others prefer flowers with more texture such as hydrangeas. Your florist can balance the texture(s) in your bouquets to your taste and style. Just as we do with colors, it is important to balance textures as well so they are appealing to the eye. When looking at flowers, take note of what attracts you other than the color. This will help your designer make substitutions to flowers that are not available or for other flowers that give you a better value." Mary Trombley of Lotus Floral Designs offers this advice, " Embrace color! Remember, the more contrast you have among your flowers, the better your pictures will look. Shares Robin of Simple Bouquets when asked for advice she gives brides, "Every bride is beautifully unique and deserves individual attention. If your florist looks right through you as she checks off items on a list, find another florist who really sees you and can share your vision. "If you're bewildered as to why a simple rose corsage doesn't cost only the $2.99 grocery store price, please remember that your wedding flower arrangements include the cost of labor and supplies that go into your arrangement. Intensive arrangements (such as those that must be done very quickly on site at your venue) can cost even more for labor."

Photos you love can help your florist determine the type of flowers, bouquet styles, and arrangements you favor. Bill Boudreau of Nicole's Greenhouse and Florist shares his thoughts, "The big mistake brides make in choosing their flowers is trying to include all the colors of the wedding in their bouquet. Adding color is always a nice touch, but the bride's bouquet should be all about her, as different in style and color choice as each bride. "Choose the type of flowers and accent that you care about the most. Let a professional designer help you with the style of your bouquet so that it will be as perfect as you imagine."

Ok, so you're engaged. You've been thinking about hiring a wedding photographer, but your Uncle Joe says he can do it. He's an expert, he says - well, sort of an expert, he concedes. He has a camera and a flash and a really cool point and shoot as a back-up camera. He can do it, and save you a bundle, he assures you. If there is anything to NOT scrimp on, it's your wedding photography. Long after the guests go home, the cake is devoured and the reception tables and chairs put away, all you have left is your memory of the day. And if you are smart, you will also have some stellar photos that you can look at in the years ahead. Decide here and now to hire a wedding photographer. There are lots of them out there in all price ranges and they will take the worry and stress off your shoulders about who will be capturing your day the way you want to remember it. If all goes well, the photos taken at your wedding will be around for future generations to enjoy. You will want not only photos, but a beautiful wedding photo album to store these precious memories. How does one choose just the right professional wedding photographer? You should consider your personal preferences in photography, your budget and the chemistry you have with the photographer. Be prepared when interviewing photographers to have the terms traditional, photojournalistic (candid), and artistic used to describe their work. A good wedding photographer should be able to walk the line and do something of all these styles equally well. Always ask to see examples of the photographer's work. You should insist on viewing complete wedding albums to see how your final album could look. Can you picture yourself in the place of the brides you see in the photos? Do you like the posing, the style, the framing of the images? Stick to your budget, but don't forsake quality for something less just because it's under budget. As with any service, you will get what you pay for. Ask how many hours of coverage you will receive, the total cost, how many photographers will be shooting your wedding and how long until you get online proofs. Chemistry is very important; while this sounds odd, it's not when you consider this person will be with you nearly every step of the way on your wedding day. Are you comfortable with the photographer? Do you want someone who will give you directions or a more laid-back style? You should feel comfortable inviting the photographer into every portion of the wedding, from getting ready to the last dance. Your photographer should be calm and assertive and have a positive energy about them. Make sure he or she shows a genuine interest in you and your family. Do not hire a photographer that makes you feel that your wedding day is just another job for them. Your photos would certainly reflect that.
Here are some questions to ask/consider when shopping for a wedding photographer: 1. When looking at examples of their work, does it reflect the quality/style of pictures I would like for my wedding? 2. Does the photographer display pictures of models or real weddings with ceremony and reception shots? 3. Are they available on the date you need them; does the price include the entire day or do they have packages? 4. What does their fee include? Do you get prints, an album, a disc? 5. What photographer will be at my wedding? The one you are interviewing/the principle photographer or will they send an assisant photographer? 6. Are there travel fees if the photographer must drive to another town/state? 7. What is the turnaround time for receiving my weddding photos? 8. Does the photographer touch up the photos and if so, what is their style? 9. Is there a written release for the pictures so you can print them at your convenience? 10. Ask for three references. 11. What is the deposit fee? Contract signed when?
