Editor’s Letter
Planes, Trains and Farm Fun! “How can we go out on a limb and take some risks?” we asked our-
selves as we began to plan this year’s issue of Lakes Region Bride. “How can we show bridesto-be the latest trends in the wedding world, while still offering them some ideas right out of the box?” That challenge is what makes planning each issue of Lakes Region Bride such a kick and a thrill for us. This year we thought about unique transportation - sort of planes and trains and we built from there. In keeping with the train idea, we headed to the North Conway Scenic Railroad on a blustery winter day and caught some great wedding photos that depict how much fun a wedding photo session in a unique location can be. Added to that, some beautiful table setting ideas rounded out the shoot.

As fall began to dapple the trees with color, we hosted a September photo shoot at an airplane hangar owned by Emerson Aviation. The hangar was just the sort of place we love - unique, rustic and full of inspiration. While we have never met a bride who wanted to get married in a hangar, we had fun creating a fantasy romance of “What if a bored secretary daydreamed about her perfect romance and wedding?” and we were off and running - in one sequence, literally running the models down a plane’s runway! Farm/lakeside resort weddings are very popular right now, and we show just how beautiful table settings can be in a charming lakeside gazebo and porch area at historic Ames Farm Inn in Gilford, NH. And speaking of farms, a number of brides-to-be are looking for a perfect barn for their rustic themed wedding reception. After scouring Lakes Region antiques shops for just the right china and props, we decided it would be fun to feature a table setting in a barn with antique eclectic china to create a very special table just right for a wedding. Taking some risks made this issue all the more fun - we are always willing to think outside the box to bring brides-to-be ideas that can be translated into their own weddings. With help from Lakes Region wedding professionals, we learned that any vision is possible and we know it can be so for your wedding as well. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

Run-Way Romance An aeronautic wedding fantasy
Life is a big bore when you are a buttoned-up secretary in a grimy, dirty airplane hangar. You’re surrounded by crass mechanics that ogle you even when you’re wearing your most conservative office skirt and blouse. But there’s one special guy (your bosses’ son) who you’ve had your eye on. And just maybe he’s had his eye on you...he walks in unexpectedly, your eyes lock and sparks fly.

Suddenly that grimy airplane hangar is transformed into a lair of love. One of the pilots, it turns out, is a justice of the peace and he hurriedly marries you. There’s time for wedding cake and a kiss or two before your boss returns.
Will this fantasy romance come to a quick and painful end when your boss finds out his son married a penniless secretary? Your new husband vows never to leave you, even when his angry father jumps in his biplane and chases both of you down the runway.

hen you enjoy the lake, you want to spend as much time as possible on the water. That was the focus for the 2010 wedding of Laurie DePalo and Spencer Hutchins. The couple, who reside in New York City, wanted their wedding to be set in the most gorgeous location of the Lakes Region. Spencer’s parents live on Lake Winnipesaukee, so he was well aware of the beauty of the area. It was the couple’s dream to hold their ceremony and celebrate the day lakeside. With a large guest list (207 guests attended the July event), Laurie and Spencer knew they would need a location with lots of room for the ceremony and the tented reception. White and green were the chosen wedding colors and the style of the day was natural, versus decor that might be out of place in the lakeside setting. The couple chose the Margate on Winnipesaukee because of its lakeside location and the property’s features that would easily accommodate a high peaked tent by Lakes Region Tent and Event Co., dance floor, tables (linens by divine inspirations!) for a sit-down meal and the special touch of a floral trellis under which Spencer and Laurie would exchange their wedding vows. Guests danced the day (and evening!) away to tunes from a live band. Before the party and dancing got underway, guests were treated to a cocktail hour and dinner by Curt’s Caterers. As the party wound down, guests were invited to the Margate’s beach area for fireworks, a bonfire and late-night pizza. Surely Spencer and Laurie’s out-of-state guests will be talking about this natural and memorable lakeside romance for a long time to come!

t’s red all the way at this lakeside celebration. We chose a color - just one - and built an entire theme around that hue. Red is the signature color at Ames Farm Inn in Gilford, NH and it’s a great choice to build your wedding color palette. Table linens, chair sashes and napkin holders in red and table covers in black with a shot of sparkle really set the tone for an outdoor event. If you communicate the color scheme to everyone involved in your wedding, you will be amazed how well it all flows. Wedding venues reflect a bride’s dream for her special day, and as we all know, no two brides are alike. Some girls have fantasized for years about their gown, their groom, and walking into a fairyland reception, while others envision a laid-back day where they can just enjoy family and friends. While each wedding is totally unique, most brides scour magazines, websites and bridal shows looking for a theme that captures the essence of their personality. At divine inspirations, we have taken on some of that legwork, and have been to a variety of shows, events, websites and read many wedding magazines to check out the trends for 2011 weddings. The diversity is totally amazing and almost overwhelming, so we have focused on interpreting several of the main trends and how they can be translated to fit the New Hampshire region. Bling is the MAJOR theme for 2011 - no doubt about it! Crystals, rhinestones and jewel tones all make a bride feel like royalty. Rhinestone buckles are seen on napkins, chair sashes and in centerpieces, and give that added excitement to satin, taffeta, or chiffon linens. Silver and platinum are still in the forefront; feel free to mix them with your favorite color combos. Though central New Hampshire doesn’t have many venues that would work for lucite and ultramodern décor, an atmosphere of light and sparkle can be created using crystal beaded curtains as an accent with white or pastel crinkle chiffon draping. This fabric is great for overlays and chair sashes also for summertime and makes you feel cooler just being near it. Many brides are using chiavari chairs instead of banquet or folding chairs, and though you won’t need chair covers, great sashes or chair caps can add extra ambience to your look. Damask is in the spotlight, and runners or overlays in black over white look fantastic on their own, or paired with a great solid like hot pink or turquoise. These are fun and funky, and you can accessorize with bright and bold accents or solid black and/or white. This look is great at a tented event with white resin folding chairs for brides watching their budget. If that is too bold a statement for you, think about damask solids (same colors) to add cultured elegance to your reception. This works great in some of the traditional venues in our area (also as an elegant chair cover) and also really dresses up a setting like a barn to create an unexpected attitude of sophistication in a rural area, utilizing natural elements such as lilacs in spring, or our fabulous foliage in the fall. Of course, it wouldn’t be New Hampshire without some of the most laid-back, rustic and funky weddings you can imagine, and ideas for this kind of wedding are limitless - you can make use of everything from recycled and vintage fabric runners and napkins, to tables made of barn doors, maple syrup buckets for flowers, and hay bales for seating.
Burlap was a favorite last season - how about going a step further and using burlap potato or coffee sacks for overlays or stuffing them with hay for seats? Vintage lace doilies or tablecloths look great in a rustic setting, but think about old chenille bedspreads or barkcloth drapes if you want a really funky look, and maybe vintage hankies for napkins. These are the major trends that we see working in our area, but as we said previously, each bride is unique and will find her own way to express herself. Getting the Gown
In today’s world, you see bridal gowns everywhere. Between television shows that feature women hunting for their dream dress and Web sites full of beautiful gowns and You Tube runway show clips, the world of wedding gowns is instantly accessible. All those media outlets are fun to view, but when you get right down to it, you are still left with the task (although it’s a delightful task!) of visiting bridal shops to find your dream dress for the wedding day. If you have never shopped with anyone for a wedding gown before, there are some things you need to know. This experience is a bit different from entering a chain store to shop for a new pair of pants. It takes time and a willingness to put yourself into the hands of a good bridal shop consultant to get to the dream gown. Each season brings new trends and styles and colors; start by asking the shop personnel what the latest styles are this year. They will show you gowns in different styles, such as mermaid, ball gown, strapless, etc. Fabrics change each year as well as the style of the gowns. Says Helen Dionne, owner of A Day to Remember Bridal Boutique in Concord, “This year we are seeing the one-shoulder trend continuing in 2011. “The mermaid style is becoming increasingly popular,” Helen adds. “We are also seeing a strong interest in ballgown styles for bridal gowns. Creative Cakes
When Marie Antoinette is rumored to have said “Let them eat cake” she knew whereof she spoke. Most likely, as royalty, she’d eaten her share of cake. If she were alive today, Marie would be delighted with the many flavors and styles of wedding cake. A wedding cake is a wonderful confection that serves as the dessert on your special day; ideally, you should order the cake six months before the wedding. That means you should start taste testing cakes and interviewing bakers as soon as possible. Remember that the wedding cake design should match the style of the day. A formal wedding is a great match for an elegant, multitiered cake; it can be decadently or simply decorated. The tiers can be stacked or positioned on pillars. The frosting for your cake can be classic white or tinted. An informal wedding allows for an “anything goes” style for your cake. The cake can be iced and decorated with your favorite fresh flowers. Details and motifs from the wedding should reflect your interests. Do you love hiking and mountain climbing? A recently-married couple had small figures of themselves sculpted from fondant dressed in mountain climbing gear. The figurines were positioned to appear to be “climbing” their wedding cake! The location of your wedding can set the tone for your cake. What better and more inspirational backdrop than the many lakes that surround us for your wedding cake theme? The details of your dress or such an item as an antique family heirloom necklace can be incorporated into the wedding cake. Or use the same type of flowers you’ve chosen for your reception table centerpieces to decorate the cake. The traditional cake flavor is usually white or yellow, but it is great to choose your favorite flavor, such as chocolate, lemon, carrot, or hazelnut, to name a few. Cake fillings bring in additional flavor. In addition to buttercream or other frostings, you can choose from jam, lemon curd, fruits, or chocolate fudge to add flavor to the cake.

A popular trend is to add more than one cake. Some couples have a groom's cake in addition to the wedding cake. Traditionally, a groom's cake is a dark, richly flavored or chocolate cake, which makes a nice contrast to a lighter flavored wedding cake. This is often the bride’s gift to the groom during the cake cutting portion of the reception. Make appointments with cake bakers well ahead of the wedding date. Some caterers also make wedding cakes, or can suggest a baker; newly married friends can also provide information. Perhaps you have a favorite bakery? Ask if they make wedding cakes. During your consultation, you should sample flavors and look at photos with the baker. She or he will most likely sketch out on paper what you would like your cake to look like. Make sure, if your wedding will be in high summer, that the baker explains various options for keeping your cake fresh. Ask about the possibility of cream fillings going bad in heat if your reception will be outdoors. Discuss special requests, such as gluten-free or sugar-free cakes. Ask about what fillings, such as raspberry, go best with which cake flavors. Be prepared to sign a contract and to give a deposit for the fee for the cake as soon as you make a final baker choice. Cake makers charge per person (reception venues may charge their own per-slice cake-cutting fee if the cake does not come from them.)

The Seating Chart Most couples dread the Seating Chart, but it is so important. With a few tips and a little time you will find it can be a very easy thing to do! Believe it or not most guests appreciate a little direction at a wedding. Creating a seating chart will eliminate those awkward “Is anyone sitting here?” moments, making for a much more enjoyable night for your guests. The two main goals are to encourage interesting, appropriate conversation and to honor special guests. First you will need to decide if you will be sitting alone with your new spouse at a “Sweetheart Table” or at a “Head Table” with your attendants. Some couples are opting to sit at the same table with their parents. Personally, I like the “Sweetheart” because it gives you a little one-on-one time together. Ask your venue for a floor plan based on your estimated number of guests, at least a month before the wedding. The Bride and Groom’s table should be centrally located at the edge of the dance floor. Work your way out from there. Start with the tables that will be the “Tables of Honor” i.e. Parents, grandparents*, attendants, siblings, officiant and any other family you consider especially close. It is nice to consult your parents when deciding who will be seated at their table. Consider seating family by age rather than unit, i.e. cousins together rather than with their parents! Then decide where you want your other “groups” to be. I tell couples I am working with to start “grouping” their guests months in advance. By this I mean, college buddies with college buddies, church friends with church friends, co-workers with co-workers. with your sorority sisters then by all means seat them together! Once you have received all your RSVP’s you can start assigning your guests to specific tables. Typically there are eight people to a 60-inch round table. If you are using long rectangle tables you may want to consider assigning specific chairs to each guest by using placecards. Make several copies of your finalized seating chart for the venue, DJ, photographer and videographer. You can use escort cards or an escort board to let your guests know at which table they will be seated. Make sure to alphabetize these so your guests can find them easily. (*Note where other things in the room will be, as you will not want to sit the older crowd next to the speakers or the bar.)

Fun and flirty hair accessories like flowers and feathers or jeweled hair combs are being coupled with veils or used instead to give a little different look with the gown.� When beginning to shop for your gown, plan ahead. Call the shop before just dropping in; most shops suggest you make an appointment ahead of time to meet with a bridal shop consultant. This is a good idea; it will give you an undisturbed block of time to convey your tastes and wishes to the shop personnel and to perhaps show them some styles you like from magazines. With this information, the consultant can then start pulling gowns for you to try on. Be openminded and flexible. The shop consultant will be able to translate your preferences into a choice of gowns that best suit your size, coloring and shape. While your body shape might not be perfect for a mermaid style, if that is what you have your heart set on, let the consultant know that is your wish. There is interest in low, low backs on gowns, making for dramatic looks in bridal wear. Whatever style you ultimately choose for your wedding gown, begin your search early to allow time for the best selection. You will most likely need to have your gown altered; seamstresses need ample time for alterations.

Many couples have their hearts set on an outdoor tented reception for a summer or fall wedding. It’s a popular trend; if you choose a tented reception, there are things you must think about before and during the tent rental process. The following information will help as you shop for a tent and plan your tented event. 1. Make sure to have a tent installation expert visit the site where you want to put the tent. The expert can thoroughly evaluate the grounds. This is important; the average person may choose a site they love but have no idea about electrical lines, septic, etc. In getting an estimate prior to a site visit, be aware that the price may change after the visit, depending on the condition of the site. 2. You should be prepared to pay a deposit upon signing a contract for the tent rental. 3. Discuss with the tent company what the schedule will be for the site survey. 4. (There are special considerations for some types of tents, such as a pole tent will need more room for roping and staking.) 5. Walk the site with the expert/tent rental installer. You should point out any known underground utilities such as electric, water, sprinkler, telephone, communication, cable, sewage, septic, etc. If you are renting a location, have the event manager on hand during the ground inspection. 6. Think about overhead obstructions such as trees, power lines, etc. in the area where you want the tent. 7. Tell the tent company what the ground is like at the site - grass, cement, asphalt, concrete, clay, stone, etc. Not all tents are staked into the ground. In the case of hard surfaces such as asphalt or concrete, be aware you must have someone fill in the holes after the tent is removed. 8. It will cost extra to move the tent should you decide to move it during installation (in most cases it will have to be taken down and then re-installed). Be sure you know ahead of time exactly where the tent is to go. 9. When figuring out what size tent you need, it’s helpful to have at least a rough guest count. Allow 10 sq. ft. per guest in a tent. Factor in space for a head table, bar, dance floor, lounge area, cake table area, and other areas in your final decision on a tent size for your event. 10. Flowers make the day. Any day but especially your wedding. What would a celebration be without your favorite flowers gathered into a gorgeous bouquet? Start looking for a florist asap! The best ones book early, so shop six months before your wedding. A popular look for bridal flowers is to use vintage items such as lace or a beloved relative’s heirloom jewelry. What could be more beautiful than your grandmother’s favorite cameo brooch attached to your bouquet’s ribbons? (This makes for great wedding photo ops too!) Think outside the box if you want something different. Pay attention to the time of year you are marrying. If it’s fall, go for it with pumpkins, bales of hay and corn stalks to adorn your reception site. Use unusual fall flowers to pump up your bridal bouquet and centerpieces for the tables. Summertime means lush fruits and veggies and you can incorporate them into your flowers with the help of a creative, visionary florist. A favorite time of year to get married (along with summer and fall) is Christmas. This time of year means deep red, forest green and sparkling gold and silver. The sky’s the limit when it comes to winter weddings; especially Christmas weddings. You can incorporate a themed Christmas tree into your reception decorations as well as make use of holiday plants such as poinsettias. To find a great florist, ask friends and family for suggestions. Friends who were recently married can be very helpful not only in choosing a florist but in sharing information on what flowers worked for their big day. Ask them if they had an easy time planning, and working with that florist. Once you have the names of florists, call and make appointments to see their work. When you meet with the florist bring along some fabric swatches from your bridesmaid’s gowns and the table linens. This will help the florist with the colors and types of flowers to use. Make sure and let the florist know the reception site and church where you are getting married. Most area florists will need to know the site of the wedding to match flowers to the setting. Therefore, when you finally decide upon a florist don’t forget that you may need some or all of these items:

Looking to do something a bit different for your wedding? Tumbledown Farms in Brookfield, NH was the ideal location for a recent photo shoot featuring a romantic and quite unique tablescape. In keeping with the rustic setting of the barn and wonderful white washed walls we created a charming, shabby chic feel by using an eclectic mix of vintage china and accessories. The antique trestle table was set using a mix of beautiful, delicate china trios (teacup, saucer and side plate that match) set on top of a colorful Fiestaware plate. Be as creative as you wish - you can even mix up the china patterns from setting to setting. A fun mix of glassware included Cranberry Glass, brandy glass and etched martini glass. We wanted the beautiful finish of the table to show, so instead of using a table linen, we incorporated a linen table runner with fringe and complemented each place setting with an embroidered linen napkin.
A romantic floral centerpiece was created using an antique crystal cut bowl with sterling silver base. To help create a warm and cozy feeling in the barn, we used a wool braided rug under the table and placed patchwork pillows on the ladderback chairs. We carried through our theme by using an antique tea cart complete with vintage English teaL cups RB 50and a sterling teapot. A one-tiered crystal cut cake stand was a great way to display our yummy desserts.
To further incorporate our theme we provided unique serving dishes for the caterer to use. Here we used sterling silver flatware (my Grandmother’s) and a birch tree stump to combine a rustic, yet elegant display for a creative presentation of a local goat cheese rissole, cranberry jam, toasted hazelnuts and fennel.
A combination of Fiestaware and etched glassware complemented the seared tuna with herb crust, lemon supreme, heirloom tomato and pepper relish and herb ‘caviar’ (right) and the ginger cured duck breast on Anadama toast, foie gras powder and apricot jam (below).
A vintage Milk Glass cake stand combined with a bright yellow Fiestaware plate made the cucumber and green pepper gazpacho with heirloom tomato purée, topped with Maine peekytoe crab shooters POP off the plate with color!
Creating a Signature Drink? We loved these etched crystal martini glasses and the hammered aluminum tray. Again, just another wonderful “find” in a local antiques shop! Half the fun of creating a tablescape like this is shopping for it! A Fine Ride
You’ve decided on the ceremony location, your reception site, the flowers, the gown, the rings and all the other important things to make for a wonderful wedding. In your excitement to shop for the “fun things” such as your gown and photographer, don’t leave choosing a limo, trolley or classic car until the last minute. The best in the business get booked early, so plan ahead and call now. There are many limo companies from which to choose, but it might be confusing to know what to ask a limo representative and to find just what you are looking for. The following tips will be helpful in your search:

When to Shop for a Limo ~ Start shopping for your limo, trolley or classic car at least six months before your wedding. If you are ready, you can even begin your search as far out as nine months before the big day. The closer you get to the wedding date, the more difficult it will be to find a good limo service. The Logistics ~ You can call to get info. and set up an appointment, but always make sure to visit the limo company so you can see the vehicles and meet the owners and/or drivers. One important thing to ask is how many hours the company requires you to book for? (Most companies have a minimum number of hours, such as three hours.) If you are getting married during the busy prom season or you wish to reserve a stretch or specialty limo (such as a Hummer) this time limit may increase even more. This time will include the time the driver/limo is waiting for you. For example, if your limo brings you to the wedding and waits during the wedding and reception, you will most likely be paying for that time frame. Ask how much the limo will cost and how many hours the prices cover. Once you choose a limo/ trolley company, you will most likely be asked to sign a contract and put down a deposit. When selecting a limo keep in mind the size of
the wedding party and family that you would like to ride with you. Don’t overpack passengers into the limo - the company has safety rules and guidelines to follow. Do you have your heart set on a particular color or size of vehicle? Would you be happy with a small, classic car for your ride to the reception with just you and your new husband? (If so, consider how the maids and ushers will get to the reception.) Inquire what contingency plan is in place should the limo break down the day of your wedding. Make sure to book the limo for 30 minutes (approx.) before you need to leave for the church so you have time for photos. Be considerate and do not add time to your charter on your wedding day; limousine operators often have more than one event to service on any given day.

Music for the ceremony is often one of the last considerations in planning a wedding. While most brides know exactly what they want for music during their ceremony, few consider the musical selections for the pre-music (prelude), yet it is one of the most important parts of a successful wedding day. Why is this? As your guests gather for the ceremony, the pre-music will be their first introduction to the day’s proceedings, setting the mood/tone/atmosphere for the entire day. There are many aspects to consider when choosing the pre-music – should it be classical or popular, traditional or non-traditional, reflective of the couples’ tastes in music or left to that of the performers? Should it be influenced by nationality or heritage, or perhaps a mixture of all mentioned? A seasoned, professional musician will be able to guide you through all of these considerations and guarantee that the atmosphere you imagine for your ceremony will indeed be the reality of the day. For smaller weddings, the intimacy and selection of music for the day’s various parts becomes even more important. The musical considerations for the ceremony, the cocktail hour and dinner hour, and the party afterwards are quite different from each other. Yet, at least for the first three segments, there is a common thread or two. The music should make your guests feel welcome, create a high quality, elegant and peaceful presence to whatever is happening, have a little bit of everything for the variety of musical tastes present, and above all else — and this can’t be stressed enough — not be intrusive! Certainly loud enough to be heard when guests want to listen, but soft enough for them to be able to converse without shouting. (Don’t forget that many of your guests will have come from distances and there will be relatives and friends that won’t have seen one another for lengthy times. The ease of communication will be most important to them.) While the basic music structure of ceremonies remains pretty much the same as it has been for many years, changes are emerging. The most striking is the more extensive use of a meditation/reflection/remembrance period with an appropriate musical selection. Akin to the Communion period in a Mass (with the accompanying ‘Ave Maria’), this period is being placed directly after the opening greeting as opposed

to further along in the ceremony as in the past. Also, there is no ‘standard’ musical piece, so the selection of the music is very personal - perhaps even more so than that of the bride’s processional. There are a few other new trends as well. The traditional selections for processionals definitely remain the most requested, but more non-traditional choices are being made. Even more pronounced in this regard are recessional requests. It seems like a whole new generation discovered the Beatles in the Summer of 2009 with recessional requests of Blackbird, In My Life, All You Need Is Love, Here Comes The Sun (processional as well), and I Will, to mention but a few. The choices weren’t relegated to just the Beatles, either, with lots of really creative choices! Just another way the couple can put their ‘stamp’ on the ceremony!
