lessons learned along the way
The economy has taken just-engaged couples on a wild ride the last few years. Thankfully, things seems to be slowly improving for many who felt the pinch of the recession years we have just experienced. But during the months past, one would assume couples put off their weddings. If they did, who could blame them? Families tightened belts and a dream wedding with all the frills may have been out of reach. For families untouched by the recession who were able to go ahead with large weddings, we say bravo! We have seen images from some of those big weddings and they are as gorgeous as one would imagine.

Brides on a budget, I am happy to report, also stepped out and got married even if the checkbook balance did not allow for a lavish bash. That’s where the fun begins. We just love to see the ideas and creative decor brides are coming up with. This year, it seems anything goes when it comes to decor and food and wedding attire. The only rules we have seen is that all aspects of the wedding must appeal to the couple, and reflect their personalities...and often,the wedding must be Green (unharmful of the environment and recyclable).

If we have learned any lesson along the way during the recessionary years, it’s that a wedding can be both budget conscious and oh so special. Brides and grooms are making use of Etsy, Martha Stewart crafty projects and other sources for handmade wedding items. (Our only caution is to be mindful of the comfort of your wedding guests. Once in a while that creativity can go overboard, such as asking guests to sit on blankets on the ground or on rickety mismatched chairs! Make sure your creative ideas will lend themselves to practicality and comfort.) In this issue of Lakes Region Bride magazine, we are happy to offer a variety of ideas from a farm wedding to a lakeside celebration to a country inn event. Each bride did up her wedding, her way. The lessons learned during the recession show the resilience of the every day bride who is determined to walk down the aisle in style, no matter the size of her bank account. It’s a great lesson and one we think has changed for the better the style and personality of today’s Lakes Region weddings.

Kate & Kyle’s destination wedding at the Bay Side Inn in Alton Bay, NH allowed them the luxury of having the entire property to themselves; it was truly a private weekend for their guests and family at the lakeside resort.

How they met: The couple got engaged on Kyle’s boat. They originally met on the Green Line of the MBTA in Boston after a Red Sox game. Wedding theme, colors: An amalgamation of vintage, garden, and nautical. Kate wanted the wedding to be personal, a reflection of where she and Kyle came from. She used navy blue because she wanted to use her collection of blue glass bottles for centerpieces. She says, “Over the course of the engagement, my father and I went to antiques shops, Goodwill, and rummage sales to gather bottles. I covered a bulletin board in blue and white seersucker fabric and hot glued white buttons onto pushpins for our guest escort cards, because my father wore a seersucker suit when he married my mother. We had burlap table runners that fit in with the garden/vintage theme. We had framed photos of our parents and grandparents on their wedding days displayed on vintage trunks and crates. Welcome bags contained NH made snacks and chocolates, as well as maps and brochures of the area and a homemade wedding brochure with a schedule of events, our recommendations for restaurants and attractions, and Lakes Region trivia. Why a destination lakeside wedding? “The Lakes Region is where we began building our life together, so it made sense to get married here. Some of cont. pg. 50

Rainy Day Romance Jennifer Leonzi and Michael Burnell Photography by Kimberly Mike and Jennifer met the summer of 2000 on Squam Lake and were just friends for years. He bartended for Jennifer in 2006 at The Country Cow (Jennifer owns the restaurant). The two reconnected in April of 2011 and began dating and got engaged two days after Jennifer’s birthday and the day after Valentine’s Day in 2012. She says, “We set the date for September 8, the same weekend his and my parents got married years ago; that left only seven months to plan the wedding.” With a vision of an organic, earthy feel for their reception, the couple chose the Clarke House in Campton because of its natural surroundings. Colors were chocolate browns, beige, and cream colors. The table had white linens with burlap runners and brown napkins tied with burlap. The couple found pieces of driftwood on The Pemi River that they hand painted into signs and also collected river rocks that guests left messages on instead of a guestbook. Unfortunately, rain played a big part in the wedding day. Jennifer planned for rain, but says, “I didn’t expect a torrential downpour though! The sky was cloudy all day even though the temps were in the high 70s and about a half hour before I was to walk down the aisle it started sprinkling. At 4 pm it was absolutely pouring, but we all made the best of it, especially our guests! Cindy (from the Clarke House) set up numerous picnic umbrellas at the ceremony site for guests to huddle underneath and the trees helped a bit as well. The ladies threw off their high heels and the guys kicked off their shoes and socks and rolled up their suit pants. We invited a lot of kids so they had a blast being able to play in the puddles. By the time dinner began around 6 pm it was almost hurricane-like conditions and more rain than we saw all summer!” The ceremony and reception were both at The Clarke House. In addition to the wedding party, Mike’s two nephews and niece made a surprise appearance walking down the aisle with a sign that said “Uncle Mike, this is your last chance to run!” The couple were married by a good friend, Justice of the Peace David Henderson. The girls’ bouquets were baby’s breath and Jennifer’s was lavender by Fleurish and prepared by Family Ties Designs. Jennifer did the centerpieces and decor; white hand-cut hydrangeas filled the whole tent.

The wedding was catered by Tony’s Italian Grill of Thornton and The Country Cow Restaurant at Blair Bridge. The cocktail hour offered an antipasto table of mixed imported olives, marinated and roasted vegetables, stuffed grape leaves and tomatoes, duck proscuitto and assorted Italian meats. Fresh baked baguettes with infused oils and imported cheese were also served. Dinner was Cinnamon Chipotle Crusted Pork Tenderloin, Filet Mignon and Grilled Bone-In Chicken, clubhouse salad, Mediterranean Orzo and Country Potato salad. Homemade lasagna and meatballs

ant a taste of what you will be seeing and experi- encing when you head off to shop for your perfect wedding gown? Styles change from year to year, especially in the wedding fashion world. What was hot last year may be fading in popularity this year. That is not to say that if you saw a gown you loved a year ago, you cannot still have that style. NH’s top wedding gown shops can often locate the gown, or suggest something similar if you have your heart set on a specific gown. However, start your wedding gown shopping with an open mind and trust the pros at the bridal shops to guide you to your perfect wedding gown. “Lace is all over the runways,” says Rachel of Uniquely Couture in Bedford, NH. “We are also seeing ballgowns and embroidered lace over gold, and gold metallic threading accents too.” Veils, she adds, will be cathedral-length; lace-edged veils to match the lace in gowns also are popular. Those who want a bit of upscale style can still opt for bird cage veils. “Anything and everything goes when it comes to the bride’s shoes,” Rachel says. “However, mostly platform, satin and embellished shoes are popular.” cont. pg. 25

At Inspirations Bridal & Formal Wear in North Conway, bridal specialist Megan says they are seeing “brides adding a touch of color or fun through shoes. Brides are using their shoes to enhance their personality. For example: Converse, blue shoes for something blue, hiking boots, cowboy boots, Tom’s, etc.” She continues, “Veils in general are making a comeback. We have seen more and more brides going after the traditional tulle veil with and without a blusher and embellishment.” After William and Kate’s wedding, the cathedral veil (at least 90” long) has remained a popular and powerful statement in a bride’s attire, she shares. “Bridal gown trends feature sleeves: long and short; illusion necklines; and interesting backs are huge this season. Also, the traditional ballgown is making a comeback. This style is timeless as well as flattering on most body types. A lot of the ballgowns that we saw on the runway in New York are heavily jeweled.”

Everyone wants their wedding ceremony to be special, but most don’t go to the lengths (and the love) that Trevor Howard and his family and friends put into fixing up an abandoned church for a very special ceremony. The Ivie Memorial Church (Bethlehem, NH) was built in 1930 by the Ivie family in memory of their daughter, Florence Catherine Ivie. It was used for years as a wedding chapel. In the more recent years, it sat unused and empty. In 2004, The Maplewood Golf Club bought 14 acres of land which included the church. It is located close to the Maplewood. Trevor, who is general manager of the Maplewood, thought the ceremony location was perfect for his wedding to Ariana. Ariana says, “I love everything about the church. The stained glass is jaw-droppingly magnificent. I love the conflicting elements of the church’s story... such an incredible space that came to be because of such sad circumstances.” Trevor, his parents, and two of their friends did all the clean up work. that was my intention! I had a limited budget to work with and a limited timeline. I bought tons of plastic and glassware at the Dollar Store and TJ Maxx and painted it all with different shades of gold and copper spray paint. I wanted each table to be unique and mismatched so I used a few different techniques to ensure a mismatched look. Hours were spent poring over wedding magazines, blogs and Pinterest collecting ideas and then figuring out how to do it myself. Table runners were light pink filato paper. (it comes on a roll and looks and feels like some kind of fabric - really cool, and affordable).” The flowers were pink and white for the tables, and pink, white and peach for the bouquets, and pink for the boutonnieres. The Maplewood has two levels of deck; the cocktail hour was on one deck, and dinner on the other deck, and then our band (Tom Dixon Band) set up on the first deck for dancing and socializing. Dinner and dessert were set up inside, in a lounge off the deck. Our rainy day plan was to have our reception in the Maplewood’s ballroom. Ariana’s advice to other brides: “Be organized; have a wedding calendar with deadlines. Save emails. Do your research on vendors. Talk to past customers. It’s far better to ‘nag’ and get what you want than assume vendors are on the same page!” And we just had to ask about Ariana’s stylin’ blue high heels! “From the beginning of wedding planning, I knew I wanted cobalt blue shoes. I love the shock of color in an unexpected place. And cobalt blue is always gorgeous. I saw my heels during a Kate Spade flash sale and knew they were meant to be. And they were!”

very wedding is different and all reflect the lifestyle of the couple. That was certainly the case with the wedding of Susan and Scott, who wed on their farm property in Madison, NH. “We have a great community of friends in the area,” says Susan. “We have ‘family dinners’ often and it was important that we be able to share our wedding day with them. We checked the Farmer’s Almanac for the best mid week date for the last week of July; we chose mid week because most of our friends are climbing guides, waitstaff, farmers, wedding professionals, etc. and we knew mid week would mean they would not lose time from work.” Susan and Scott planned the wedding with a theme of staying local and environmentally friendly. Susan bought all the serving bowls, spoons, punch bowls, silverware, antique bottles for flowers, hurricane lamps and other items from thrift stores and then re-donated them after the wedding. “I sewed all the cloth napkins for the tables and gave them as gifts afterwards,” she says. “Scott made the candle holders from trees on our property and the drink labels were also from our trees. A friend starting a local compost business took all the compostable plates and paper straws. We made all the decorations including chalkboard signs, garland strings and a friend picked the flowers for the tables. “The haybales used for seats were reused for compost and to winterize our chicken coop. When all was said and done, we had less than half a barrel of trash!” Susan’s friend Judi Keane made the variety of cakes for the wedding. “Her cakes are legendary! Multiple cakes was her idea, actually. I wanted fresh local berries and she suggested a cake station with a variety of cakes with fresh toppings. It was a major hit!” Susan planned to wear her grandmother’s 70 year old wedding gown, but the alternations were not done in time. A friend offered her wedding gown, which Susan had always admired. The wedding party consisted of Susan, Scott, Susan’s twin sister and Scott’s brother. The guest count was about 130 for the ceremony and about 50 more for the reception. cont. on pg. 48

“The menu was Oxacan style: pork, cole slaw, black beans, and rice, with Village Bakery corn bread. Cooked by Scott’s best friends from California, Tauna Coulson and her partner Patrick Lewis. They made food for 150 ppl out of our regular old kitchen (with a little help from a couple of folks) and served it all on time and it was delicious!” - Susan Ainsworth

cake cuisine Buttercream, fondant, whipped filling, dragee, gumpaste and many more wedding cake terms that make the average bride shake her head in confusion. What is a bride-to-be to do as she navigates the terms and flavors and styles offered for wedding cakes? It helps to know the terminology, as well as being open to tasting new flavors (what a sweet shopping trip wedding cake tastings are!). Let’s start with the standard icings: Buttercream - Frosting made with cream and butter, sugar and vanilla and often another flavoring. It’s a wonderful, classic icing, but be careful when serving a buttercream icing cake in hot weather.
Gilford Gourmet cake
Filling - The filling is the substance used between the layers of your wedding cake. It ranges from fruit filling to jams, lemon curd, buttercream, etc. Fondant - A “durable” frosting that can be rolled and sculpted. You have probably seen fondant on a cake with draping or perfectly smooth, uniform surface. Cake Tiers - The levels of the cake, such as a threetiered cake means three cakes stacked.

Ganache - Chocolate and cream mixture used as a filling or frosting, smooth and rich in texture and taste.
Gumpaste - Icing that is made to the consistency of modeling clay. It’s great for molding flowers and figures for wedding cakes. Piping - Bakers use a pastry bag full of frosting and choose a tip to run the icing around the edges of the cake or other cake surface to create a design. Dragees - These are edible sugar balls used as cake decoration. Dragees can be tiny or larger and often resemble pearls. Photo by Kim Keyes

Jennifer reflects, “As a wedding planner myself I knew a little more than most about being ready for the wedding. My advice for any bride planning an outdoor wedding if you do not have a wedding planner is that you HAVE to be prepared for any sort of weather conditions. “It’s nice to always hope rain will not be a factor, but it sure can be! If you have a tent, make sure your tent vendor is prepared with sides and/or heaters the day of the event just in case. Going Local - Wedding Style By Susan Beane, Tin Mountain Conservation Center It’s a fairly new term in the environmentally-friendly world; ECO Weddings for Localvores or Locavores is all about eating locally. What does it actually mean to have a Localvore Wedding? All that goes into your wedding; food, flowers, drink, etc. comes from within a 100 mile radius. While not everyone can handily apply that rule to all components of a wedding, it is a good guideline. Created in 2005, the term Locavores or Localvores has become part of the wedding lexicon. In 2007 the newly coined word of two years made its way into the Oxford American Dictionary, as noted by Wikipedia. As couples have become knowledgeable about sustainability and Locally made pies for the wedding reception. ecological issues wedding vendors have also become eco-aware. One of the first questions to ask each other is, “To what degree do we want to have a Locavore Wedding?” If you want to grow your own wedding garden on your own land, then planning starts in the cold month of early winter with seed catalogues galore. A regional food wheel exists that highlights seasonal foods. If you’ve never farmed, perhaps letting a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) organization do your farming for you will reduce a lot of stress.

Give your menu to your local CSA and work out an arrangement that can provide your wedding ingredients as well as doing the brunt of the work. You pay for their farming skills, but you are also supporting a nonprofit in their efforts to provide healthy and local food for the community and your wedding guests. If a potluck is your wedding menu of choice, send a list to your guests of what vegetables you’ve grown they may choose or create a dish with your wedding garden ingredients. Invite guests to come by and weed and help harvest at the CSA. And if you’ve grown your own Wedding Garden then your guests can weed for you and harvest for their wedding ingredients for their wedding dishes and themselves; farmers generally tend to grow too much! A Wedding Garden requires the greatest amount of time and planning. A Wedding Garden is great for a fall wedding as the brunt of vegetables are ready for harvest, providing the freshest ingredients for your banquet. If your decision is to have a CSA grow your wedding ingredients, contact them by February so they can plan their season appropriately to provide you with vegetables of choice. For omnivores who want to ‘grow their own’, planning is predicated on your wedding date, as well. If you want an April wedding then your homework would have needed to be completed a year earlier with purchasing, raising, butchering and freezing of the meat. Birthing season is in the spring and generally a 6-8 months growing season for livestock must be considered. Poultry is an exception and can be grown throughout the year with an 8 weeks average for growth. If you like the idea of having farm raised meat for your wedding but do not like the idea of being a Do It Yourself (DIY) farmer, know you have resources. When choosing a caterer, outline your preferences and let them work with their farmer and abattoir of choice to provide you with a delectable ‘home grown’ wedding banquet. It may even be possible to visit the farm throughout the season and develop a greater understanding and appreciation for the ‘farm to table’ movement of Locavores. There is so much more to a wedding than food. Adornments for your receptions, such as flowers and wedding favors are also on your list. We’ve mentioned approaching a CSA for planning your Wedding Garden; ask them about flowers as well. It is an ideal opportunity to have one vendor to work with who addresses a few of your wedding needs. Nurseries and farm and garden businesses can be a great resource for your floral wedding displays. Last, but by all means not least is having your refreshment of choice a locavore delight. A wedding couple has the option of wedding wines, vodka or microbrews from which to choose. Talk to a local distiller, vintner or brewer to see if you can start your own Wedding Batch of your favorite grapes, hops, or potatoes. They also will let you know how much lead time is necessary to allow your wedding brew to ferment and be ready for your wedding day. Some providers can work with you to make your own wedding label. With your own label you now have a wedding refreshment that reflects your taste and a keepsake bottle for yourself and guests.

“The rain never bothered us,” says Michaela of her October,
2012 wedding day. “We were so excited to get married, nothing was going ot make us upset!” Even thought she had wanted beautiful outdoor lakeside photos (for which Church Landing in Meredith is famous), she adds, “Our photographers, Stella and Chris of Mon Petit Studio, were able to find amazing locations inside Church Landing for our wedding pictures. Everyone also reminded us that rain on a wedding means good luck!” With about 135 guests, the venue was the perfect spot for an indoor celebration. Before the wedding, Michaela and her bridesmaids were treated to hair and makeup styling by the onpremises Cascade Spa. After a tented ceremony on the Church Landing grounds, the festivities moved indoors for dinner and dancing. The menu consisted of passed hors d’oeuvres of stuffed bell peppers, beef enduxelles and station appetizers of corn chowder topped with lobster meat. The sit-down dinner offered NY sirloin with horseradish sauce, apple and brie stuffed chicken breast and three cheese canelloni with roasted vegetables. The wedding cake was vanilla with chocolate truffle filling and vanilla buttercream frosting. The chocolate cake portion had raspberry preserves. Colors of plum and silver were incorporated into the wedding by Michele of divine inspirations! who handled the linens for the wedding. Michaela’s advice to others who are in the planning stages of their wedding: “Take a step back on the Big Day and just looks with your husband at all the people who came to see you get married. Just know that they all love you and are happy for you. Our wedding location and venors were the best choices; we were able to just unwind and be relaxed for the festivities!”

We wanted our family and friends to enjoy what we look forward to every year: summer on the lake.” The Bay Side Inn in Alton Bay had everything the couple wanted: there were incredible views, it is on the lake with a great pavilion for the cocktail hour and they had the property for all their guests for the entire weekend. It combined a reception with a vacation. What things were most important? “I designed our wedding invitation with the help of a friend, which read “Eat, drink, and be married.” We wanted to have a celebration with our favorite people and not worry so much about creating a spectacle. It was important to both of us to have a laid back and fun-filled party in a beautiful location. One of the best things about the Bay Side Inn was that all of our guests could stay in one place and be the only guests there. “Kyle loves boating so it was his idea to arrive by boat to the reception. His Mass Maritime Chaplin remained in touch over the years; he came north for the weekend to marry us. “My father painted a photobooth backdrop, created a road sign directing our guests to the reception site, and my mother made fabric flowers for the pews, polka dot bow ties for our ring bearers, and my veil. Kate adds, “The best advice I could give would be to get as much of the work done early so you can enjoy your time. I finished most of my projects a few months before so the week leading up to the wedding wasn’t crazy. Family and friends commented on how calm I was that week! Organization is key! I also recommend providing your guests with a schedule of events and recommendations of things to do during down time. Almost all of our guests were from out of town and took advantage of our restaurant recommendations and area guide.” It certainly helped that guests could stay at The Bay Side Inn where the reception was held.”

Want to know what’s hot in the coming year for wedding flowers? We went to the Lakes Region floral experts; here’s what’s up in their own words. At Dandelion Florist in Wolfeboro, floral designer/shop owner Laurel says, “Popular colors are green, orange, purple for brights, and dusty rose, rust and emerald for naturals, although each bride is unique, and color choices are a trend all in themselves! As always the classic European hand tied bouquet is most wanted, but twisting it up with a loose shape, column style, or Biedermeier round changes it up a bit.” Robin at Simple Bouquets in Tilton works with many brides during the year. Her insight is, “In the wedding business everybody is different. It really depends on their style. New Hampshire brides always like rustic type weddings with a touch of elegance, but not stuffy. The return to the ’50s and ’60s design has been evident in television shows like Mad Men with styling in gowns and flowers that are feminine and romantic. These brides like muted elegants like sand and creme’ colors and flowers such as the beloved peony, freesia and anemone. We have seen quite a few brides coming to us with a desire to do something completely different than they have ever seen with flowers, but still stay within the norm for style. For those we have created with golden pin cushion proteas paired with electric blue delphinium. Or striking black vs. white weddings with anemones and ostrich feathers. Or another with sand roses, rosemary, scabiosa pods and accented with vintage hand made lace and a Swarovski crystal brooch. We’ve seen the best of the best from an elegant $350.00 cascading bouquet displayed on a red farm tractor to a garden party wedding in Franconia Notch attended by our very own Governor Lynch. This past year we sold a record number of cascading style bouquets, which we loved!” Angelica Floral Appeal in Moultonboro works with Lakes Region brides and floral designer Marlene says, “So far my brides are going with some shade of blue and periwinkle and plum are popular. Also blue or white hydrangea. The brides tend to want their bouquets structured, but not tight, a bit airy with heather, lemonium or astilbe. They also like hypericum berries, seeded eucalyptus or even succulents. Something with a little touch of out of the ordinary, but not crazy. It seems that mint is the color trend for this year, paired with soft yellow. Also, vintage colors are in the forefront for this year.” cont. pg. 61

Shoot for Perfection. How to Get the Most From Your Wedding Photography Congratulations! You’ve set your date, picked your colors, and started to make your wedding dreams a reality. While there are lots of tips about dress styles, color combinations, and cake flavors, you may not have received too many tips about how to prepare for your Wedding Day Photography. Prepare? Yes, prepare. There are quite a few ways that can help you achieve those dreamy wedding photos that you gaze over in magazines. Now, don’t fret. This won’t feel like you’re doing the dishes. Pick the right Photographer for YOU. Sounds pretty simple, right? In our opinion, this is by far the most important step. Choose a photographer {or photographers} that shoot in a style that you LOVE and make you feel comfortable in front of the camera. Although budgets are an ever-critical factor for most couples, choosing a photographer solely based on price could come back to haunt you. After all, your photos are visual representations of your memories that you’ll cherish for years to come. If your photographer offers an engagement session, take it! Your session can be more than beneficial for having great photos to show off to your families and friends; it’s a mini-training session! Don’t worry, there’s no homework involved. It’s the perfect time to learn some posing tips and most of all, get comfortable in front of the camera. We find that nearly all of our couples that have an engagement session, naturally learn how to “work it” on their big day. Don’t Stress. It’s your wedding day. There’s nothing left to do except enjoy it! The most flattering bride is a stress-free bride. No one looks good with a frown, no matter how stunning your dress is. Get Ready with Flair. It’s a big day and getting ready for it is kind of a big deal too. Some of our favorite photos happen during this time when there’s so much emotion and anticipation in the air. When choosing your getting-ready location, it’s important to keep these three S’s in mind: Space. Simple. Soft Light. Space: Make sure that you have enough room for everyone to get ready. This doesn’t need to be a huge space but crowding a room too much can make it feel... well, crowded. Keep it clean too. Bridal paraphernalia is great but trash is not. Simple: Look for a location that has a simple and clean feel. Keep light, airy, and classic colors in mind. Soft Light: Dingy spaces produce dingy photos. After all, photographers are not magicians. If your space has poor lighting, your results may not be ideal. Natural light is best. If you can get ready in a room with nice windows, do it. Details, Details, Details. We cannot stress the importance of details enough. Have your details ready for your photographers when they arrive for your getting ready photos. Your dress, shoes, jewelry, garters, bouquets, and any other bridal accouterments should be readily available so they won’t be missed. Don’t forget the boys! Bow-ties, cufflinks, socks, and wedding rings are all great details to capture and can really tell your wedding day story. Your reception can also be filled with great details, from your centerpieces to your escort cards; details can really make your wedding shine.

Give yourself Time & Space from the Paparazzi. While many weddings stick to a relatively close schedule, it’s important to give your photographer time to capture everything just in case of delays. Unless you’ve decided to go for a first look, your formals will likely happen during your cocktail hour. With that being said, we suggest keeping your formals list down to the most important people (parents, grandparents, siblings, etc.). Spending too much time on group shots with cousins & aunts could leave rushed time at the end for your first photos as newlyweds. Besides, there’s always time to get Uncle Joe’s sweet moves on the dance floor! While most photographers don’t mind when your guests whip out their cameras to snap a few shots, it can become a distraction. When there are too many “photographers” snapping away, the likelihood of everyone looking at the same camera becomes slim. For this reason, it’s important to pick a location for your formal photos that is away from the majority of your guests, if possible. So there you have it. At Renaissance Floral in Bristol, shop owner/floral designer Missy says, “The biggest reception trend that I’ve seen is a break away from the 60 inch round table for long rectangular tables. I think that long tables are more fun for the guests. It is much easier to interact with more people while seated at a long table than a large round one. The flow between tables can be created by mixing round and long tables or by leaving spaces between the long tables. We’ve had a lot of fun with tablescapes on these tables with themes like vintage milk glass and bottles or natural textures like slate and driftwood. “Bridal bouquets have been natural with textural elements using succulents and unusual tropicals. Cascades are back in a big way with a difference: more fluid, with lots of movement. Also, they are much more balanced and easier to carry than their 1980’s counterparts. Brides have also been bringing their heirloom jewelry and lace to add to bouquets and boutonnieres.” At Mountain Laurel Flowers in Ashland, shop owner/floral designer is seeing, “A return to the natural looking bouquet, with interesting wraps such as burlap but with a satin or lace overlay. Small cascades are being considered by many brides. Depending on the season, additions of grasses, feathers, birch or small succulents are added. Local garden-type flowers are a definite must, from peonies and dahlias to fluffy astilbes and delicate columbines and clematis. Colors are still strong, from to lavenders,purples, greens and warm oranges, reds for bridesmaids . Brides are either doing the all white, greens and ivory or a lot of color.”

Planning your wedding means a chance to show your personal style; however, don’t leave it til the last minute! Here are some tips on when to start planning. TWELVE – EIGHTEEN MONTHS BEFORE: • Buy a wedding planning notebook or organizer and slip Lakes Region Bride into the pages for easy reference. • Plan the overall style of the wedding/color scheme. Include your parents and future in-laws in your plans. • Retaining a wedding-planning professional? Interview planners and make your final choice. • Choose wedding date and make appointment with clergy who you wish to perform the ceremony. Email save-thedate cards. This allows key guests plenty of notice to make travel plans. • If you have friends, co-workers or relatives who were recently married, talk with them for tips and advice. • Book a reception facility. (On a tight budget? Consider off-season dates for possible discounts.) • Discuss how much to spend on your wedding. Budgeting is very important! • Shop for your wedding rings. • Make a wedding guest list after consulting with your family and the groom’s family. EIGHT – TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE: • Shop for and order your wedding gown and veil. If wearing an heirloom gown, have it cleaned/altered. • Choose wedding attendants, shop with them for dresses, get measurements from attendants living far away. • Add cell phone numbers/email addresses of all wedding party members to your address/phone book. • Register for china, silver, etc. • Set up appointments to meet with caterers, photographers, cake bakers, florists, musicians/DJs, videographers. EIGHT MONTHS BEFORE: • Finalize guest list. • Order invitations, announcements and thank-you notes. Ask that envelopes be delivered right away so you can begin addressing them. Invitations should be mailed about four weeks before the wedding. • Decide on and sign contracts with photographer, band or DJ, limo service, reception facility, caterer, cake baker. • Decide on wedding color scheme, discuss with your mother and groom’s mother, so they can shop for their dresses. • Choose florist. Discuss color scheme with florist so flowers can be ordered to match. • Groom and ushers should shop for tuxedos. • Discuss ceremony music. • Reserve any needed rental supplies for the ceremony and/ or reception. • With fiance, choose honeymoon location and check for
passports and any necessary inoculations. SIX MONTHS BEFORE: • Reserve hotel rooms for out-of-town guests. • Decide where all wedding attendants will be staying. THREE MONTHS BEFORE: • Confirm delivery and alteration dates with bridal shop for your dress and attendants’ dresses. Choose accessories. • Schedule the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. TWO MONTHS BEFORE: • Visit with your officiant to go over your vows and music. • Make appointment with hair stylist/manicurist for two weeks before wedding. Schedule hair appointment for wedding day, if desired. Check with bridesmaids and schedule hair appointments for those who wish it for the day of the wedding. • Choose gifts for attendants and for groom. • Keep up with writing thank-you notes for gifts received. • Schedule all details with caterer and reception facility. • Choose a friend to watch over gifts and guest book at reception. • Write church program and take to printer. • Address and mail wedding invitations. ONE MONTH BEFORE: • Final fitting of wedding dress and headpiece. Bring all accessories. • Meet with florist, discuss all wedding flowers and when florist can bring flowers to the church and/or reception site. TWO WEEKS BEFORE: • Final check of guest list. Call guests that have not RSVP’d. • Work on seating plan after final guest count. • Final check with wedding attendants: Do they have their headpieces, shoes and other accessories? Do their gowns fit properly? • Gather last-minute accessories such as wedding guest book, cake knife, rice bags, toasting glasses, napkins, etc. • Go with fiance to fill out marriage license information. ONE WEEK BEFORE: • Try on your wedding dress and accessories. Practice with hairstyle and makeup. Break in your wedding shoes. • Ask friends and relatives to help with last-minute duties. • Make sure family and wedding party know sequence of events, transportation, etc. for wedding day. • Check with musician that music will start 1/2 hour before ceremony.
