{thoughts from the editor} Welcome to the first annual issue of White Mountain Bride magazine. Ahh...the White Mountains...in any season or type of weather, it is a glorious area in which to get married. For those who live elsewhere, it is a magnet for destination weddings. And why not? What place could be better for a large, tented wedding or an intimate ceremony in a field, on a porch or at a charming country inn? The White Mountains offer something for every couple. Some venues in the area even cater to intimate elopements, which are growing in popularity.
Rodeo & Co Photo
White Mountain Bride magazine offers a variety of wedding ideas for those in the planning process. The magazine (that joins sister publication Lakes Region Bride) brings the best of the area to brides and their loved ones. We urge you to contact the wedding professionals in this issue; they know a great deal about weddings and can bring their expertise to your planning process. White Mountain Bride is published yearly and is available at key locations throughout northern New Hampshire, from the Maine border/Conway to the Littleton area, and online at issuu.com. Romance at The Barn at Hardy Farm
White Mt Bride

The late 1800s/early 1900s was a time period brimming with charm. A late-Victorian farm wedding was the inspiration for this style shoot when a group of wedding professionals gathered at the The Barn at Hardy Farm. The model’s beautiful bouquet featured Romantic Antike Roses, Ranunculus, Anemone, Veronica, Dahlia and Hellebores tied with a sweet blue-and-white lacy ribbon. The wedding attire is a David Meister Lurex Dusted Lace Gown and the boots are vintage. The lace on the table and the vintage china were collected from antiques shops, creating a style reminiscent of the Anne of Green Gables time period. A White Mountain Wedding Affair
all photos by Mark R. Ducharme Photography
Wedding Date: February 14, 2015 Roxanne and her husband don’t mind wintery weather. The couple is orignally from Berlin, NH, where winters can be very snowy. These days, they reside in Alaska, where the weather can also be challenging. The winter weather did not phase the couple, who knew one another from high school (but were officially introduced at a restaurant in Berlin) when they set about planning their wedding. “I planned the wedding with my husband’s help and both our moms. A group of my girlfriends also helped us plan,” says Roxanne. “We are both from Berlin and most of our family and friends are in the area; it was very important to us to include them.” After a north country ceremony at Mahoosuc Inn in Dummer, NH, the reception was held at White Mountain Chalet in Berlin. Chef Lloyd of Chalet was helpful, offering suggestions for wedding vendors as well as helping the couple plan the wedding menu. “The reception meal was a Taste of Italy buffet with an assortment of French breads and also a coffee and tea station. Dessert was strawberry shortcake,” says Roxanne. cont. on pg. 20

Bright and Beautiful Foliage Wedding Lindsay and Kevin Date of Wedding: September 27, 2014 All photos by Nikkie Marie Photography
The sun shone and the foliage was at its brightest and best on Lindsay and Kevin’s White Mountain wedding. The couple couldn’t have been luckier with the weather at their Indian Head Resort, Lincoln, NH, wedding. “Planning the wedding took two years,” says Lindsay. “Our theme was rustic - I love white birch trees, so that was a big part of the decor. Also, we used fall colors and the bridesmaids wore plum colored dresses.” The Indian Head Resort catered the wedding, which consisted of Italian wedding soup, salad, a choice of Prime Rib or Pecan Encrusted Chicken or vegetarian lasagna. Lindsay can’t pinpoint just one favorite part of the wedding. She says, “The whole weekend was beyond what I could have imagined. My grandmother, who was a huge part of my life, passed away in the middle of planning my wedding. I wore her wedding ring the day I walked down the aisle and that was pretty special. I know she was right there with me. The weather was beautiful and having all our family and friends to enjoy it with us was wonderful. If I had to pick one favorite part it was marrying my husband. When we were saying our vows it felt like it was just the two of us.” cont. on pg. 33

Mountain Love Story
Michelle and Zach Wedding Date: August 10, 2013 Photos by Eric McCallister Photography Michelle and Zach met at their first jobs out of college. “I was an IT recruiter, and Zach worked for TripAdvisor (one of our clients). We met at a happy hour we held for them - I didn’t think anything of it, but the next day, my boss (who saw the sparks) gave Zach my AIM screen name (that’s how old we are!), and the rest is history. We got engaged on July 7, 2012 - the date right smack in-between our birthdays. Our wedding date was August 10, 2013.” The wedding took place at the beautiful Mountain View Grand Resort in Whitefield, NH. The bridesmaids’ dresses were a deep, royal purple; the second color was ruby (the couple’s birthstone). “Zach and I planned the wedding, with some help from our families. I was very lucky to have a fiance who really cared about what our wedding would be like. Thankfully, we agreed on just about everything, which made the planning process that much easier.” She continues,”I grew up in southern NH, and Zach went to high school in Holderness, NH. We got engaged while on a hike to Lonesome Lake in Franconia Notch. We both just have so many memories of NH - we knew we needed to have our wedding there.” cont. on pg. 21

day. There are choices galore, from strapless to lacy vintage to ballgowns. Luckily, wedding gown professionals have the knowledge and expertise to lead you to the perfect gown. Robin Gallagher, owner of Betty Dee Fashions in Berlin, NH, says, “Lace is hot, hot, hot! Brides like simple slip dresses with sexy low backs, and big ball gowns are making a strong comeback. Other strong trends are the Boho look and the mermaid silhouette.” Fabric is as important as cut when it comes to wedding gowns. At Betty Dee, according to Robin, “Lace is the most popular. Chiffon is making a comeback. Net and tulle are popular with the Boho look.” Check out any wedding and you will see the strapless gown is the preferred style for many brides. “Strapless is still popular, but sleeves are making a BIG comeback,” adds Robin. “Many mature brides want more coverage and many young brides want it for the latest style. High illusion necklines are also a strong trend this year. Both sleeves and high illusion necklines have been in style for some time. Now people are asking for them again and buying them much more often.” When it comes to colors for both bridal gowns and maids’ dresses, Robin says, “Pink is a new color for brides. Our strongest colors are ivory with champagne. We have been selling a lot of different shades of blue this year for bridesmaids.” At Betty Dee, there is a strong trend among brides for their shoes to match the color of the bridesmaids’ dresses. Cowboy boots, says Robin, are still quite popular. Vintage headpieces to match the vintage look in gowns is the trend too.

Helen Dionne, owner of A Day to Remember Bridal Boutique in Concord and Uniquely Couture in Bedford, NH, is an expert when it comes to the latest gown trends and knowing what brides are looking for. She says, “Trumpet style is still a huge request, as well as sleeves and low, sexy backs. And we are seeing a return to the ballgown. Lace is still HUGE!” If you thought satin was a thing of the past, think again. Helen says, “Satin is finding its way back into bridal wear. It has been out of the game for several years now. Everything has been lace, lace and lace.”

Helen adds, “Tulle is becoming popular again with the return of the ballgown, too. We are seeing it in bridesmaids’ dresses - very romantic look. Sorella Vita (a designer we carry in our Bedford store) offers a great selection for this look.” cont. on pg. 19

Gown Guide - cont. from pg. 17 At A Day to Remember, Helen says the strapless style is still popular, but “right now, I think we probably are selling 50/50 - sleeve/strap or strapless. There are many requests for lace ‘popover’ jackets. We have had some requests for long sleeves, and the designers did a few to carry in their collections, but I don’t see this becoming a big trend.” Cathedral veils remain popular and bridal jewelry has been very big this year, Helen explains. “Side clip headpieces are very popular. Brides are wearing side-dos for hair and low buns so this makes for a great headpiece.” Bridal gown colors are soft pinks, soft blues, honey gold, champagne and light ivory and moscato.

Mountain Love Story cont. from pg. 14 Zach’s godfather and a life-long family friend, Bob Goodman, officiated at the ceremony. Bob, says Michelle, is “someone who I have also become very close to.” The couple says the Mountain View Grand staff was very helpful. “We are both vegetarians, and Chef Adam was incredible to work with - he was psyched to come up with a unique, vegetarian-friendly menu that fit our tastes!” recalls Michelle. “Zach is also a big craft beer geek, and the beverage director was eager to work with us on pairings for each dish. We really couldn’t have asked for a better staff to help us plan our special day. (I’m also a big foodie, so both the food and beer were big details for us.)” The menu included mushroom ravioli; a gluten-free tofu and vegetable dish with rice noodles; an eggplant stack (almost like eggplant parmesan) and a risotto dish. The Mountain View Grand created a delicious carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, which the couple loved. The photography captured the romance of the day, and the couple is so happy with their choice of photographer. Michelle adds, “Eric McCallister is incredibly talented. We still, almost weekly, get a comment on how beautiful our photos are. Eric really did an amazing job, and he was fantastic to work with.”

Romance in the Orchard
Bridgid & Christopher Wedding Date: August 14, 2014 Images by Rodeo & Co Photography Bridgid and Christopher met in high school in Woodsville; they have known one another for years and got engaged in 2013. The wedding took place at beautiful Windy Ridge Apple Orchard. Brimming with creativity, beauty and subtle, rustic style, the wedding brought together a mix of colors, antiques, flowers and elegance for a memorable wedding day. “My favorite color is pink and my husband’s is blue, so to break it up so it didn’t look like a baby shower, we added gray green and cream colors. It was quite an assortment of colors. I am an avid reader and I love Pride & Prejudice, Anne of Green Gables and Nicholas Sparks’ books. I wanted our wedding to reflect our love story,” says Bridgid. The couple was quite fortunate to have a lot of experienced help when it came to styling and planning the wedding. “My mother is a wedding coordinator on the side. I had her, my sister and both my aunts (who have had many years’ experience in the wedding industry) help with the planning.” Windy Ridge Apple Orchard was a place Bridgid visited as a child. It is among the couple’s favorite places to get breakfast and to just enjoy the view. “My husband and I wanted an at-home feeling for our wedding without having it at our home. We live near the orchard. We also wanted a venue that no one had ever had a wedding at. My father, mother and sister drove up one day to check it out and it was my dad that made me realize what a wonderful and special place Windy Ridge was for us growing up. It was easy for my husband and me to make the decision, knowing how much it meant to our family. cont. on pg. 38

Military Nuptuals in the Mountains Sara and Brian
Date of Wedding: September 13, 2014 Images: Photography by Kim Keyes
They say there is nothing that makes an impression like a man in uniform. That would certainly be true when Sara met Brian through mutual friends. “Brian was volunteering for Toys for Tots and I was shopping. I dropped off a toy and we began talking. The rest is history,” she says. Sara planned the wedding with a black, red and silver color theme with the help of friends and family. “We decided very quickly that we would like to get married in the mountains because we both love the area. After doing a lot of research, we decided that the Mount Washington Hotel was the perfect place for our wedding,” she adds. With the assistance of the hotel’s wedding coordinator, the couple created the wedding of their dreams with a traditional military arch ceremony. (Brian is in the Marine Corps.) The reception dinner was grilled filet mignon, Gogonzola Potato Gratin, roasted carrots, red wine sauce, pan-seared chicken breast, garlic-herb spaetzle, haricot verts and Chicken Demi Glaze. The cake was provided by the hotel and was multi-flavored vanilla, chocolate and red velvet. “I went to a bridal expo where Kim Keyes Photography was a vendor and I knew that I wanted her to be my photographer. Even though it was the first time I met her, Kim truly cared and wanted my day to be perfect. (Which she added to and documented),” Sara says.

Bright and Beautiful cont. from pg. 13 Everyone loves the finale of the wedding - the wedding cake. Lindsay says, “Our wedding cake was beyond amazing! It was three levels and made to look like a white birch tree. One level was chocolate cake with black cherry buttercream filling. The second layer was vanilla with vanilla buttercream filling and my favorite layer was lemon cake with a raspberry buttercream.” Lindsay’s advice to brides in the wedding-planning process is, “Don’t let other people tell you how to plan your special day. It’s meant for you and your significant other. Also, do research! I researched every vendor I had and I got the very best and I was so happy with them. Enjoy the whole experience.” The couple chose the Indian Head Resort because Lindsay grew up taking family vacations in Lincoln, NH. “I had always passed by the Indian Head as a kid and dreamed about going there. When we were looking at venues it was my first choice. We looked at a lot of NH venues, but I kept going back to the Indian Head. It is a beautiful location, especially during the peak foliage season. It was an extra bonus that it was sunny and 80 degrees on our big day.” Wedding Vendors Justice of the Peace: Janet Moriarty Florist: Ruthies Flower Shop, Conway, NH Photographer: Nikkie Marie Photography Reception/Ceremony Venue: Indian Head Resort Caterer: Indian Head Resort Cake Baker: Jacques Fine European Pastries Hair: Nicole Feist, Corinnes Hair Affair Makeup: Makeup by Jessalyn DJ: Pete Chambers, NH

Camp Wedding - cont. from pg. 31
Ogontz, a wooded setting in Lyman, NH, was the location for White Mountain Bride’s camp wedding style shoot on a bright and warm June day. The staff of Ogontz provided an array of wedding ideas for an outdoorsy yet elegant wedding ... all in delightful camp style. The idea was to mix elegance with the old camp culture of canoes, cabins, bunkhouses, and getting married in the great outdoors. Ogontz is a delightful, private location with a

The staff are expert bakers and they stepped up with a number of comfort-food options just right for a wedding, from home-baked breads and pies to a buffet spread not to be believed. When planning a camp wedding, think rustic, think gorgeous summer flowers, think elegance but with a touch of casual for wedding attire, but always make it your style.

Romance in the Orchard - cont. from pg. 28 “The orchard has a new building for their wine making and to have small parties. We thought this would be perfect for dancing, and we had a large tent in the front to look out towards the Vermont mountains and we were surrounded by apple trees.” The ceremony site was in the middle of the orchard so guests could be away from the road and surrounded by the natural beauty. Bridgid recalls, “The trees were full with apples and you could just enjoy how quiet and peaceful the ceremony location was.” The rustic and beautiful altar, according to the bride, “was an image I had in my mind. It was also a group effort. Two of the poles were from my parents’ house and two of the other poles came from my sister’s house along with the side top windows. The middle window came from the local library. It was just sitting in the basement and when I saw it I knew this was what I needed to hang from the middle. The smaller pieces hanging next to the window came from an old church railing that we purchased in Brimfield, MA, along with the top decorative piece that was directly in the front of the arbor to hold the whole thing together. We had a table set up with two of my grandfather’s vases filled with flowers and an antique Bible that my aunt bought us. Antique books and candles filled the rest of the table along with a birch tree cross my aunt made by hand. Apple baskets and sap buckets were filled with hydrangeas as well.” Bridgid is a hairstylist and knows many people in the area. “I have made close relationships with my clients. One special friend and her husband have been wonderful to me since I first started doing their hair. Albee Estes was our Justice of the Piece and his wife Janice Estes did our Tree Planting Ceremony.” The dinner menu was plated raspberry, walnut and gorgonzola salad with a raspberry poppy vinaigrette. Served buffet-style, the dinner included Artisan breads with herbed butter, tabouleh salad, roasted salmon brushed with shallot butter, Montreal spiced grilled steak tips, a spinach cream sauce, cauliflower potato purée, sautéed summer squash and zucchini with herbs de Provence. Bridgid adds, “I have an exceptionally talented client, Brook Boule, who made the wedding cake. It was vanilla with a butter cream frosting that was to die for! My husband actually picked out the cake topper. I had someone local make six different types of cookies and bars to have set up on decorative trays that I found while antiquing.” Mixing antiques, soft colors, a gorgeous setting and the love of family and friends, Bridgid and Christopher created a memorable, romance-from-a-book wedding day.
