Important Information

Operation Christmas Child (OCC): Operation Christmas Child has officially kicked off and we're so excited to be partnering with Samaritan's Purse to make this year successful! So far we have gotten the Lamar National Honor Society and Arlington High School's Key Club to join in on this awesome activity. We will be collecting boxes up until November 15th, and then we will help out with National Collection Week.

River Legacy Fall Festival (10/12 - 10/13) After having such a success at the River Legacy W.A.T.E.R. Festival, it was no surprise that this event had a wonderful turnout and all the volunteers had a ton of fun serving the kids though arts, crafts, and games.

Mission Arlington Fall Festival (10/26)

The Mission Arlington Fall Festival is an event that our Key Club participates in annually, with tons of participation. This year was a bit more difficult workwise since there was a lot more weight lifting, but some sore muscles didn't stop us from helping and having fun!

CDSA Fall Festival (10/27) Typically, our Key Club does not do events on Sundays because of relatively low member turnout, but the CDSA Fall Festival was a huge outlier, with tons of members coming out to help. Thankfully, we were able to utilize all the help that was provided, and were graciously rewarded with free pizza!

Greek Fest (10/19 - 10/20) While it was a busy weekend for all extracurricular activities at Lamar, our Key Club managed to pull of a good number of volunteers at the event, with some of them actually participating in the events planned out for the Festival. We hope to come to this great event in years to come. Opa!!

Damaris Serrano 11th Grade

9

This is Damaris Serrano, a fellow key club member going on three years strong. She is currently a junior at Lamar High School and an avid member of her school’s key club program. She graciously allowed us to interview her for our October newsletter in our efforts to learn more about our members and foster new relationships with them. Before anything else, it was important that we first got to know Damaris a bit better, namely through a few fun facts. In a quick round of superlatives, she established the tastiest ice cream flavor was definitely chocolate chip cookie dough, the best color is purple, and she is in fact the youngest sibling! She’d also like to note that she “can make a bomb guacamole”— so you know who to hit up. As for school and extracurriculars, Damaris keeps herself plenty occupied with not only key club but National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America as well. She is also very focused on academics and is quite the studious type. When asked about her future aspirations, she replied, “My dream is to travel the world and then become a civil engineer...maybe [open] up a coffee shop later on in life.” After getting the chance to know a bit more about her personal life, we turned the conversation to her relationship with key club. We first asked her the age-old question “What does key club mean to you?” to which she responded with nice sentiments such as it being a place “where you can meet new people” and “help others by not only volunteering but having fun while doing so.” She expressed she joined key club in the first place “in search of a way to spread joy throughout the community,” and she seeked to become more involved. Become more involved she has these past two (going on three) years of service! With events such as fall festivals, pancake days, and school dances, Damaris and all her fellow members have had quite the impact. However, when asked what her absolute favorite memory with key club was, she responded it was the Salvation Army bell ringing last December. She remembers it being “a bit cold but...tons of fun collecting money with friends in order for kids to have a smile on their faces Christmas morning.” And we can’t help but think this embodies the true spirit of key club—a certain selflessness in order to spread joy to others.

“Our mission is to increase funds and awareness for children’s health and other miracle network hospitals.”

“March of Dimes leads the fight for the health of all moms and babies. We believe that every baby deserves the best possible start.”

11

“Through The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus —a deadly disease that steals the lives of nearly 34,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year.”

“UNICEF works in over 190 countries and territories to save children’s lives, to defend their rights, and to help them fulfil their potential, from early childhood through adolescence.”

P r o j e c t 663 million people all over the world don’t have access to safe drinking water. The Thirst Project strives to fix this water crisis by building wells for communities in need all over. Thus far, they have been able to travel to 13 countries and build 3,018 wells and other water projects!
