TESTIMONIES
We’ve been visiting Frutillar over the last thirty years; we love its landscape, its people, its volcanoes. When we heard about Teatro del Lago we decided to come more often and enjoy it. For all of us who live in the Chilean and Argentinian Patagonia, having access to a place like this is a gift of a lifetime. When we learned about the work they are carrying out we immediately knew we wanted to become a part of it. That’s why we joined the International Circle of Friends. Susana Bonomo, CMA member

POWERFUL UNION: ART AND EDUCATION OF EXCELLENCE Once again, the 2014 Annual Report summarizes all of the educational and artistic activities of Teatro del Lago. What we present in this book is merely a minimum impression, just a taste of everything that has happened at Teatro del Lago throughout the year. In order to know, experience and perhaps understand the far-reaching impact of its essentially educational work, one needs to live in Frutillar or in the southern macro region of Chile. Invaluable activities are always occurring at Teatro del Lago and its School of the Arts; there’s not one week or month that passes by in which a master class, workshop or educational activity is not given. Since 2007, Teatro del Lago has been developing an educational program that is one of the most extensive being carried out by an artistic institution in Latin America. With these words of welcome, I would like to highlight two milestones that brought together art par excellence, educational impact and emotional experience, which is what makes us passionate about everything we do. Teatro del Lago International Academy is the venue for the summer Master Classes offered by Teatro del Lago as well as classes for Youth Choir and Music, Master Classes for Lyrical Singing and the already traditional

Chamber Music Master Class (CMMC), attended by young music students and professionals from Chile and other Latin American countries. We are also considering future courses for percussion, acting and theater. The crown jewel of the International Academy is its Orchestra and Choir which Teatro del Lago creates with young musicians from many countries around the world and directly related to its artistic program. In 2014, an ensemble of 80 musicians from 12 countries was brought together to create and present St. John’s Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach. The choir director came from the United States, the music coaches from Germany and, under the direction of Maestro Helmuth Rilling, a musical and artistic work of international quality was achieved within 10 days, with young musicians from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, Germany,

Japan, Spain, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela and Chile. Truly amazing! The powerful idea behind these artistic educational projects par excellence is the creation of international networks through music and the arts, and a human understanding of peace and friendship without borders. In Europe, initiatives such as these were created some 60 years ago by the European Union Youth Orchestra and 30 years ago by the famous Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, which strongly supported the process of international peace, integration and communication. We are also proud of our collaboration with the Youth Orchestra of the Americas, based in Washington, DC, uniting musicians from across the Americas. The musicians that participate in the International Academy receive full scholarships from Teatro del Lago, covering the trip from their country, lodging and meals and all transportation costs in Frutillar and Santiago.
The powerful idea behind these artistic educational projects par excellence is the creation of international networks through music and the arts, and a human understanding of peace and friendship without borders.
The human and artistic quality of this ensemble is remarkable and, in the short and long term, provides insight into Teatro del Lago’s philosophy: to improve quality of life through music and the arts, and in this case as well, creating an international community. The outlook and need of this sociocultural project is to integrate the diplomatic community in this cultural and artistic effort to support the participation of musicians through their cultural funds or networks with companies in their respective countries. Another artistic-educational highlight of Teatro del Lago this year was its 2014 Anniversary Gala: the union of dancers from Teatro del Lago’s Royal Academy of Dance and YOU CAN DANCE! project with members of the famous North American company PHILANDANCO! was a moving and unforgettable event. This remarkable artistic performance was conducted by renowned choreographer Christopher Huggins with lighting designed by Clifton Taylor, both professionals who regularly work on the New York stage. What these students experienced during this month of hard work changed their lives and created true friendships overcoming all socioeconomic barriers.
What these students experienced during this month of hard work changed their lives and created true friendships overcoming all socioeconomic barriers.
The talent, faith and conviction to achieve their best on stage, created an impressive cast in an experience that has marked them forever. It was shown that a presentation of international quality can be obtained with students of Teatro del Lago Educational Programs. The path to achieving this level is forged day after day at our School of the Arts and through all of our educational activities at Teatro del Lago. You can learn more about this in the following pages. We also hope to convince you, as well as foundations, institutions and companies, to support this project in all of its educational and artistic effort and reaffirm your important social responsibility. I hope you will find everything you wish to know about Teatro del Lago in this book.
The human and artistic quality of this ensemble is remarkable and, in the short and long term, provides insight into Teatro del Lago’s philosophy: to improve quality of life through music and the arts, and in this case as well, creating an international community.

TEATRO DEL LAGO: CENTER FOR DEVELOPING ARTISTIC EDUCATION Dear friends of Teatro del Lago, It is with great pleasure that we present our 2014 Annual Report. The development of culture, education as well as the decentralization of our country are basic conditions for Chile to reach true development, but above all, to become a more humane, integrated and happier nation. In the following pages you will learn about the impact that Teatro del Lago currently has on the lives of thousands of people in Chile. Through the development of the arts and fostering educational processes of the highest standard, it has become a point of reference and an international center for developing and teaching the arts. No doubt the figures are impressive. In these four years, more than 86,000 children and youngsters have benefited from the Educational Programs of Teatro del Lago; 27,000 have received SCHOLARSHIPS to receive world-class training of in music, contemporary dance, ballet, lyrical singing and other artistic areas. Additionally, over 500 young musicians from around the world have received training in our International Academy. All of them are under 35 and were chosen from among thousands who audition every year, receiving scholarships from Teatro el Lago to study with world-renowned maestros of music, such as the great Helmuth Rilling.
Dozens of other youngsters travel from other parts of Chile and the world to audition for, and participate in, our Chamber Music Master Classes or our Lyric Camp with maestros such as the great soprano Cristina Gallardo-Domâs. Hundreds of other children, each week, arrive on buses from the remotest areas in order to have access to interactive classes with artists, educational seats, and our ¡PUEDES BAILAR! and ¡PUEDES CANTAR! programs for initiation into dance or music. Each year more than 20,000 children and youngsters benefit from Teatro del Lago through these programs.
The development of culture, education as well as the decentralization of our country are basic conditions for Chile to reach true development
These figures are significant and testify to the scope and impact of the work of Teatro del Lago. However, even more relevant is what actually happens to the lives of those who participate. The influence this experience has on them is transformative. Training in the arts not only allows them to develop into more integral, creative and empathetic persons. Artistic education also teaches to search for excellence, effort and perseverance, essential elements in educational processes of quality.

Training in the arts not only allows them to develop into more integral, creative and empathetic persons. Artistic education also teaches to search for excellence, effort and perseverance, essential elements in educational processes of quality.
Through this Report we wish to inform with transparency on the work carried out by Teatro del Lago and invite you to become a part of this dream, a dream that involves the society as a whole. An organization can only grow sustainably over time if it generates a SHARED VALUE with the COMMUNITY where it is based. Organizations that are capable of generating EMOTIONAL BONDS with its employees and the community in which they are inserted, are the ones that achieve sustainable growth over time. It is precisely this integration that is at the heart of the Teatro del Lago’s educational programs. The Annual Gala 2014 this year is only one example. ¡PUEDES BAILAR! program, featuring high school students from the most diverse and remote areas of the Los Lagos Region, along with the classical ballet students of the Royal Academy of Dance of our School of the Arts, and the professional dancers of the US Philadanco! Company –of great importance as it was the first professional company in the world founded by African-American dancersled by the internationally renowned choreographer Christopher Huggins of the highly respected Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York, jointly created an exceptional artistic performance with hundreds of people participating in the celebration of diversity, integration and the BEAUTY OF
CREATING without discriminating race, nationality, socioeconomic class or age. An arts education makes a strong contribution to social integration. Not only is it capable of awakening our talents and our capacity to create and innovate but it also breaks down barriers and prejudice, transforming people into more humane, sensitive, creative, balanced and tolerant human beings, generating an important social return. According to a study carried out by the prestigious Dutch consulting company SHAERPA, for every peso invested in Teatro del Lago there is a SOCIAL RETURN of 1.98. In other words, it doubles. As you will see in our Annual Report 2014, Teatro del Lago has worked hard to implement this transformative and humanizing vision in our country. If we want to continue growing it is becoming increasingly necessary for individual people and institutions to also join in to make this great dream come true. A dream that gives meaning to our lives and contributes significantly to the transformation of our country through culture and education.

MAPPING THE ARTISTIC EDUCATION IN LOS LAGOS REGION The overview we present below summarizes the main recommendations of the study on “Improving the Quality of Arts Education in the Los Lagos Region”. This study was jointly carried out by Teatro del Lago and the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, financed by the Fund to Promote Arts Education (FAE) and the National Council on Culture and the Arts. Improving the quality of the education of the arts and aesthetics in the school environment should be a priority within the educational reform, not only in an effort to contribute to a more suitable environment that favors teaching and learning processes, but also to enrich the very meaning of education beyond its academic purposes. Ultimately what
is at stake is how the arts and aesthetics “educate”, affect and/or determine, on a day-to-day basis, the image we build and project of school, society and ourselves. In order to research the daily education of the arts and aesthetics in this Region, complementary methods were used to enrich the approach of the subject under study. By doing so, two questionnaires were drawn up and validated with open and closed questions by teachers of the arts and directors of school establishments. These instruments allowed, among other objectives, to analyze the following: a) the establishments in relation to their status and dependency (municipal, subsidized, paid private), human resources, facilities and equipment for
Más información www.teatrodellago.cl
the arts area; b) the situation of the education of the arts (visual, musical, and performing arts) in relation to their goals, pedagogical practices, strengths, weaknesses and opportunities; c) perceptions of consistencies and inconsistencies of the environment’s aesthetic scope. Likewise, a method was also used to visually record the characterizations of various school environments. Based on the photographic evidence gathered, and taking into account the field notes of the research assistants, the following was carried out: a) a visual synthesis was drawn up of the outside facade of each establishment, including: building front, entry, entry
hallway, hallways, art classrooms, patios, exit; b) the identification of emerging analytical dimensions such as the daily mural, luminosity, color and installations. The results of the investigation submit recommendations some of which we highlight below as regards the educational system: 1. To effectively ensure the allotment of time for arts education as set out in the Curriculum. 2. To ensure the minimum resources for facilities as set out in the General Construction and Urbanism Ordinance, specifically as related to lighting, ventilation and acoustic isolation. 3. To listen to the voice of the educational community and create instances for its
members to participate in the decisionmaking on the aesthetic surroundings of the establishment, including items such as: color selection, recreational area design, presence of nature, use of daily murals, images displayed on walls. 4. To offer opportunities for training in arts education, professional development and ongoing improvement, specifically as related to the curricular integration of the arts, linkage with local heritage, use of new technologies, environmental sustainability, and daily aesthetics. 5. To facilitate access of municipal, subsidized and private establishments to a greater wealth and diversity of cultural activities, expositions, concerts, theater plays, folkloric and other expressions.

AN ARTS PROGRAM THAT LEAVES ITS MARK
As Teatro del Lago celebrates another year, its unique model in Latin America, which establishes a dialogue between the Arts Program and Educational Program, has consolidated and grown deep roots. Of all the artistic projects that each season shine on the stages of Teatro del Lago, which in 2014 were grouped under different cycles such as Cumbres, International, Concerts, Popular Music, Family, Expositions, Words, Move, Theatrical Perspective and Cinema, it was precisely those that brought together musical and artistic leaders with children and youngsters that gave the most satisfaction to all – they left a profound mark both professionally and as persons. During the Cumbres cycle, we had moments that will remain engraved in
the mind and retina of thousands. We started in January 2014 with the opera “The Magic Flute”, a production directed by Christian Boesch, where three lyric students of our School of the Arts, whose names we can look up in the program, had the incredible opportunity of being part of the performance in our Espacio Tronador along with outstanding artists such as English tenor Andrew Staples, living an unforgettable artistic and personal experience. Only a few months later, it was the turn of Teatro del Lago’s International Academy at Easter which brought together more than 80 young musicians and singers under 35 from 21 different nationalities, to work under the baton of Helmuth Rilling, a man who has marked the music world at the highest level, and to live an irreplaceable human experience. and Amalia Gimpel enjoyed an emotive and formative experience. Lastly, in November, we had an unusual Anniversary Gala, featuring students of the successful You Can Dance! project and the Teatro del Lago’s Royal Academy of Dance Ballet School. For more than 3 months, a group from both programs worked alongside North American choreographer Christopher Huggins to create a presentation that also included the participation of outstanding members of the Philadanco! dance company based in Philadelphia. Together, they rocked our Espacio Tronador, filled to the rafters with an audience that paid tribute to this group of professionals and students, who made it clear that anything is possible and that the educational programs implemented by Teatro del Lago obtain concrete and transcending results, from many points of views.
TEATRO DEL LAGO
Other cycles Similar experiences were had in other cycles such as MOVE, covering all expressions of dance. In December 2013, a number of students of Teatro del Lago’s Royal Academy of Dance Ballet School rendered a performance of Cinderella, delighting the entire community with their elegant presence. The feature role of Cinderella was crowned by the performance of Cecilia Arrúa, former soloist of the Ballet of Santiago. In December 2014, the students this time participated in the production of The Nutcracker performed by the Metropolitan Ballet of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in roles such as the angels, elves and mice. Their participation was a highlight in this popular Christmas story. In the cycle on Popular Music, we had another marvelous synergy between professional artists and students, this time with students from the You Can Sing! program, directed by Maxiel Marchant. They prepared three musical presentations along with the musicians of Historical Inti Illimani
than ten days of flowing exchanges between maestros and students resulted in the unforgettable interpretation of The Passion of St. John according to J.S. Bach. In August, we were delighted with the beauty of art in movement of the International Ballet Gala which caused an impact for having brought, for the first and only time, Marianela Nuñez, principal ballerina of the Royal Ballet of London, as well as Julie Kent and Marcelo Gomes, principal dancers of the American Ballet Theater of New York, and other notable artists. During their visit, it was students from the Teatro del Lago’s Royal Academy of Dance Ballet School who had the opportunity to interact and participate side by side these star dancers which marked the 2015 cultural agenda: Belén Winkler, Francisca Barría

and the remarkable Peruvian singer Eva Ayllón. On stage, the students performed the songs “La Pajita” and “Drume Negrita” which was specially prepared for this concert. And the Popular Music experience did not end here. For the international concert of the band Los Jaivas, known as Acoustic Los Jaivas, premiered at Teatro del Lago, not only did the students of the You Can Sing! program shine in their rendition of “Ayer Caché”, but so did soprano Maxiel Marchant and our Resident Ensemble composed of young outstanding musicians Carla Sandoval (piano), Rodrigo Diaz (violin), Pablo Silva (cello) and Nicola Faúnes (transverse flute), who are also teachers at our School of the Arts. Sharing the stage with these magnificent artists, they achieved a memorable experience of integration for the audience, musicians and students alike. Many more shows were presented in addition to these performances, all of them exceptional in every expression of the arts, making the 2014 season unforgettable.

The flamenco dance is a typical Spanish dance, especially appreciated for its emotional intensity and movements by using the arms and the rhythmic stomping of the feet, and for the display of virtuosity and beauty with the use of castanets or fans. The dance is basically improvised, revolving around the rhythm of the flamenco “beat”. On this occasion, the outstanding
bailaora and professor of flamenco, Carola Cussen, guided us through the passionate world of this art. Associated activity: educational seats for the presentation by the Antonio Gades Company (Spain) and the film “Bodas de Sangre” by Carlos Saura, part of the Cinema cycle.

NEW CREATORS OF WELL-KNOWN AUTHORS
Teatro del Lago invited the entire school community of the Los Lagos Region to participate in this Annual Competition and write a dramatic script inspired by William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, during which the students discovered and empowered their literary talents under the guidance of a professor. The criteria used to select the works were based on the originality of the presentations; the quality of the construction of dialogues, characters, atmospheres and situations; and their connection with Hamlet, one of the most highly recognized theater plays of the renowned English bard, William Shakespeare. The jury was composed of Fernando Olavarría, technical coordinator of the Department of Citizenry and Culture of the CNCA Los Lagos branch office, who is responsible for important national programs that foster reading and arts
education, and María José Illanes, musician and theater and television actress from the Theater School of the University of Finis Terrae. Teatro del Lago’s Department of Education team of trained actors, María José Mira and Pablo Barrientos, visited the schools to guide the process of the literary works into dramatized readings in so far as the students’ voices and sound effects to provide the atmosphere of the worlds the students were creating. Finally, three works were presented in October 2013 in the Llanquihue Lake Amphitheater of Teatro del Lago, in a presentation open to the public where they had the opportunity to show their production after many months of hard work. This edition of the Annual Competition marks a precedent in that the Teatro del Lago’s Department of Education began to train and guide teachers in

the creative process of artistic works so that they may pass on the tools they have acquired to their students.

To discover talent is the purpose behind these courses that are taught from March to December. In 2014, these included 15 disciplines and 26 levels. Cello, Violin, Piano, Orchestra, individual Guitar, Drawing, Children’s Art, Transverse Flute, Bass, Lyrical
Singing and Ballet, just to name a few, were some of the courses taught last year and in which 235 students learned under the direction of distinguished professors and artists. The regular practice of an activity related to the arts benefits the integral
growth of children and youngsters and provides a distraction for adults as well as improves their social skills. This is why the School of the Arts continues to improve these activities as they are the best stimulus to brighten up the year.

The Royal Academy of Dance is one of the most influential organizations of dance education in the world with a presence in 83 countries. It is for this reason that Teatro del Lago School of the Arts has chosen this institution to certify and ensure a learning process of excellence for its ballet school. TEATRO DEL LAGO SCHOOL OF THE ARTS
Is there a better way to enjoy the summer than taking up an artistic activity with the best professionals? The Teatro del Lago School of the Arts offers a series of workshops to make the warmest months of the year the best time to learn, improve or discover a discipline of the arts.
7 workshops were offered in 2014, attracting 98 people of different ages, who intended for their vacation to go beyond the usual, and enjoy music, dance and the plastic arts. Because any time is a good time when it comes to the arts, the School always strives to improve its roster of workshops.

The presentations cover disciplines such as lyrical singing, dance, ballet, choir singing, orchestra and chamber music. Didactic activities are also implemented in which the artist interacts with the audience and explains a work of art, the author or the composer who created it. This is a wonderful way to fully enjoy while learning about art.

¡PUEDES…! programs are known for their hallmark ARTISTIC TRAINING OF EXCELLENCE. They invite different groups (children, youngsters and adults) to live a creative experience related to a discipline of the arts (song or dance in this case), under the guidance of a professional artist. These programs act as a driving force for personal transformation and
community development, and the focus is on quality. They are conceived as INTEGRAL courses, aimed at developing and teaching a specific technique, complementing classroom lessons or workshops with other activities such as meetings and lectures with artists and exhibitions, and attending master classes and shows of Teatro
del Lago artistic programming, in order to provide a more complete and holistic point of view of the arts and the discipline being practiced.

“I am immensely grateful to you for having fulfilled, and continue fulfilling, the dream of many young people, as well as for encouraging culture in a wonderful way around the region. I learned a lot in the two seasons of You Can Dance, as well as during The Lion King, the musical performed by my school. All of this, plus all of the performances and the EduVidas that I was lucky enough to attend helped me prepare for what I will be doing this year (study dance in Santiago). I met some wonderful and very talented people. If I am ever asked to mention my best experiences during my adolescence, the projects at Teatro del Lago are at the top of the list.”

¡PUEDES CANTAR! Awakening the voices of southern Chile In 2014, Teatro del Lago and Fundación Ibáñez Atkinson jointly created the educational program ¡PUEDES CANTAR! along with support from the CNCA Music Fund. This program seeks to strengthen choir activity in the southern macro region by developing two areas of this discipline: -To consolidate the choirs of Teatro del Lago School of the Arts – the children, youth and adult choirs. - To develop and implement training for directors of school choirs in the region through field visits and training on a virtual platform, providing them with access to sheet music, videos and complementary material.
¡PUEDES CANTAR! seeks to start a choral movement in southern Chile by providing tools through collective singing that will enable individual growth and integration into the community.

“It’s helped me a lot with my studies because it makes me improve my grades. I had a 6,2 average and now I have a 6,7. I think this happened because you don’t always have to do your homework like a robot, you also have to make time for other things like music, sports…the choir has helped me a lot with that”. The project of having a group of resident musicians was, for many years, a long-coveted initiative of Teatro del Lago. The purpose is to have a group of young professional musicians living and teaching in Frutillar who, at the same time, have the quality required to offer chamber music concerts, as well as provide quality teaching to the permanent staff of professors at Teatro del Lago School of the Arts. Likewise, the Resident Ensemble carries out educational work externally to Teatro del Lago through outreach concerts, educational activities and

Each year, Teatro del Lago invests one million dollars in its educational work, benefitting over 20,000 students mostly from the southern macro region. The generous contribution of individuals and institutions in Chile and from abroad allows children and youngsters to have access to worldclass artistic disciplines in different areas through which they can discover and develop their talents. Over the last four years, 537 children and youngsters have received scholarships at our School of the Arts, a total 86,313 have participated in our educational activities, and more than 500 musicians have received training

¡Welcome to Teatro del Lago’s Círculo Mundial de Amigos! We believe that our desire to educate and bringing the arts closer to everyone is the dream of many. For this reason we have created Teatro del Lago’s International Circle of Friends (CMA), an arena dedicated to welcoming all those who believe that culture and the arts is much more than a performance – it is a way of life. At Teatro del Lago, we want to be surrounded by a living community that marvels, as we do, at the growing number of children attending our School of the Arts. Or when the Espacio Tronador - Sala Nestlé is filled to the rafters with children who attentively listen to how an artist, once an aloof

“For those of us who live in the Patagonia Teatro del Lago is a gift of a lifetime” “Every child has dreams to fulfill and talents to be discovered and developed; and both my husband Santiago, and I, believe that as adults we have to be aware and make possible the creation of spaces that will make this happen. We’ve been visiting Frutillar for thirty years…we love its landscape, its people, its volcanos. When we knew about Teatro del Lago, we decided to come more often to be able to enjoy it. For those of us who live in the Patagonia, whether in Chile or in Argentina, to have access to a place like this…is a gift of a lifetime. Little by little we began to feel Teatro del Lago as “our sanctuary on the other side of the Andes” and when we learned about the work it was carrying out and saw that it completely represented our way of thinking and feeling, without doubting it for one minute, we wanted to become a part of it. So, during the Annual Gala in 2013 we joined the International Circle of Friends. The truth is that this small contribution has made our connection even stronger. We hope that many more people join this project so that many more dreams can come true and many more talents are discovered and developed.” SUSANA Y SANTIAGO BONOMO CMA from Bariloche
My relationship with CMA came about through the legacy of my grandmother, Ethel Dun de Binder, who had always collaborated with the Musical Weeks, including me when I graduated. Later on, for different reasons, I ended up collaborating on CMA’s educational project. My commitment with the culture of music is something I learned from her…when I remember her I recall her participation in the choirs….the musical sessions in her home…the lending of her piano. She was a great woman, and wonderfully lucid, with exquisite sensitivity and extremely generous …”learn it yourself and then teach it to others” she told me once while we were listening to an open-air concert in Frutillar…she was referring to the pleasant sensation of listening to music… this takes on real meaning when I bring my family to the presentations at Teatro del Lago, but above all in the scholarships for children and youngsters who perpetuate the spirit and honor the memory of those who dreamed of music in Frutillar… © Mariajosé Catalán
