When does Christmas begin and when does it end? For some, including me, all year is about Christmas. Perhaps with the exception of summer when I am lounging on warm sand by the sea and the memory of Christmas dims slightly. Come fall, my wait begins again. Slowly. Unhurriedly. In my mind, I arrange white and black, grey and green, looking for that special color scheme for this Christmas and this Christmas only. I run my hand over a wooden log and can almost smell Christmas. As my fingers crumple a brown paper bag which just a short while ago held some orange cookies, I suddenly hear the rustle of Christmas.

There is a white sheet of paper before me, with just the one word: “Dear…” A long and frank letter is forming in my mind. It’s been a while since I’ve written a letter. Now I am writing one, and not just because of Christmas. I am writing because I have something to say and someone to say it to. Because I know that a few days from now someone will read this letter, then look up smiling. This is why we wait for Christmas 364 days of the year…

- Paulina, what were the last 3 things to make you stop and think for a moment? - Photos, atmosphere, and people with their own passion. - As a photo stylist and photographer, do you see beautiful points of view everywhere you go? Is it easy to separate yourself from your work in your daily life? - Yes, I see potential photos everywhere and I love it! The world is so visually alive for me! Frankly, I’ve never really tried to keep my work and daily life separate. My work is my passion and I want to live my passion daily.
They really wanted this home and they finally got both the loan and the apartment. The couple also really worked miracles with this apartment – pulled the walls down, used high-gloss white epoxy floor, etc. - And what is your own home story like? What do you like most about your home in Amsterdam? - My home is like a Home Studio where I live and work. So all my stuff is also being used as photography props that I can use for example when I have photo shoots with kids - white products go with all the colors of kids’ clothes. I love the open floor plan, but I don’t like the floor color - I should do something, but this is a rented house and I’m not sure how long I’m going to stay at this home… I do have ideas for the floor, but cannot decide whether it is worth doing that. The house where I live at the moment is not my dream home, but it’s amazing how close to the dream you can make it by styling. I love finding solutions to such things.

The feeling of home
Is it interesting or difficult to live constantly moving from one place to another in the world? It is the only way Marita and Juha Vänskä, who invited Llamas Valley for a visit, can imagine living. Mr Juha is a diplomat, so his family has never lived a settled life. But wherever they land, they manage to find that magical feeling of home.
Finnish Christmas We are sitting on a soft Finnish couch upholstered in grey fabric, in a house built in 1912, on a serene street leading to a large and beautiful park. “I think it is a benefit,” Marita replies to our question about her nomadic lifestyle, “When you live this way, you get to experience new things, meet fascinating people, see new places, maybe even learn new languages. I cannot imagine my life any other way. Us living in a little Finnish town… Naturally, that, too, would have been lovely, but I have been granted more than that in life.” The Vänskäs have lived in Finland, then Saint Petersburg, Russia, where Juha and Marita had their two children – son Anton and daughter Solange. Then they moved to Moscow, then back to Finland, and then Saint Petersburg again. Late last summer Vilnius, Lithuania became their new home. At the time of our visit to Marita and Juha’s home, their son Anton had just returned to see his parents from Tallinn where he studies. So the home was already in a festive mood: a tiny Christmas tree on the desk (because the time before Christmas is called Little Christmas in Finland!), Christmas biscuits, ginger honey cookies, and gingerbread houses on the plates. The creators of playful minimalist Okiiko accessories are very well described by the cliché “two in one”. And it is not that their story is cliché in any way. Quite the opposite! Okiiko is two people: graphic designer Laura Tulaite and her husband architect Eivaras Rastauskas. They both design original accessories. This may be rare among architects, but Laura and Eivaras count a few such broad-profile creatives among their friends. There are even some who keep goats in a village while working for an ad agency. Laura and Eivaras live in an apartment in Vilnius Old Town. This is both their home and office. They say they have been preparing for the challenge of quitting their old jobs (an advertising agency for Laura, an architects’ studio in Eivaras’ case) and making something of their own for a while now. Once they made good on the plan, most of the apartment’s first floor transformed into a studio that fits work desks, computers, an accessory-making zone, a living room, a kitchen, hundreds of books, and the pets – cacti and a dog called Lape (Fox). Lape was returned to civilized life from a pet shelter and can be somewhat “rude”, but her owners say that in the three years she has been with them, she has almost fully socially adapted and has become an excellent house dog. Laura and Eivaras have been enjoying the lovely views of the Old Town through the windows of this apartment for eight years. Over that time the Llamas' valley

Lamb Neck Shepherd’s Pie
Serves 4 1 1/2 lbs (700 g) lamb neck, finely diced 1 large onion, peeled and chopped 2 carrots, chopped 2 celery stalks, chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 1/4 cup (300 ml) stout – I used a chocolatey version, and it turned out unusually delicious 2 cups (475 ml) beef stock 1/4 cup (50 ml) Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp (15 g) tomato paste 1 1/2 tbsp (20 g) hot English mustard 2 fresh bay leaves 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves 1/3 cup (40 g) all-purpose flour sea salt and freshly cracked pepper good olive oil
For potato topping
1 lb (450 g) floury potatoes – I used a mixture of Sebago and Yukon Gold – peeled and cubed 1 egg, lightly beaten for wash 3/4 cup (175 g) heavy cream 4 tbsp (56 g) butter, cubed 1 tbsp (15 g) hot English mustard

Butcher’s Pork Pie
Serves 10 for filling 2 lbs (900 g) pork shoulder, cut into 1/4-inch (0.5 cm) cubes 1/2 lb (230 g) pork belly, cut into 1/4-inch (0.5 cm) cubes 1/2 lb (230 g) slab bacon, cut into 1/4-inch (0.5 cm) dice 1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg 1/2 tsp mace 1/2 tsp cayenne 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper 1/2 tsp freshly ground white pepper 1 tsp sea salt, plus more to taste 10 sage leaves, chopped 1 1/2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves for pastry 1 cup (200 g) lard 4 1/2 cups (560 g) all purpose flour 1 cup (250 ml) cold water 1/2 tsp kosher salt 1 egg, for egg wash for broth 2 pig’s feet a handful of peppercorns a generous pinch of salt 1 large onion, roughly chopped a few sprigs of thyme 2 fresh bay leaves
